Of those areas that Russia might very sensibly take and keep, Odessa is the least geographically convenient. On the other side of it, the population would fit well into the Russian union, plus there would be considerable strategic value for Russian to control the area.
What I expect is that if Russia doesn’t take all of Ukraine, they will move on Odessa after they have taken all the other areas they expect to adsorb into their country. Probably set up a defensive line up north and then move on Odessa, perhaps from the north and the east at the same time. Once nominal control is established, supply by ship as well as by crossing the river would be practical. Or at the least, that is what I would want Russia to do if I were Russian.

I don’t see barflies understanding the the Ukraine military is collapsing and when that occurs there will be no need to invade Kiev, Odessa or other areas because the country will be forced to admit defeat.
Coming soon to a civilization war theatre in our world…..

Personally, I don’t believe RF will want to “fight” for Odessa. It is a historically precious city and (I believe) most locals are pro-Russian. The AFU knows that so they’d have a lot of partisan enemies assisting Russia. A more feasible approach is to firstly exhaust the south Ukraine brigades, then fight more easily for Kherson, drawing out the Odessa garrison until a walk-in or a blockade cauldron of Odessa is possible– that is, baring any NATO presence/resistence.
I think it is a foregone conclusion that the US/NATO would never surrender Odessa in “peace talks”, so RF will somehow have to force it out of them … short of bombing it flat.

A 22 minute condensed version with English subtitles of the Russian film about the taking of Mariupol, At The Edge Of The Abyss. Very good, worth watching.

Posted by: Roger | Feb 29 2024 4:59 utc | 104

The primary difficulty with taking the Odessa area is that these new smart munitions are good at taking out bridges, thus any troops across the Dnieper River could end up stranded. No doubt that is why the Russians abandoned Kerson early on. And for the same reason, the Ukranian force that crossed the river and went east were always for show only, with no expanded conquest ever possible.
The Ukranina forces might well surrender, but I doubt Russia will ever get a deal with NATO, and NATO might well choose to not recognize anyone who surrenders to a Russian occupation. While the local forces might rebel, it would be alot safer for them to surrender when the Russian army shows up, allowing that is what they want to do.
As for occupation, unless the Russians are willing to accept the local government that is already in place, they will have to occupy any region they expect to annex. And will hold an election in any area where the population is agreeable.

From Zhytomir (north of the UA) to Odessa it is only 500 km.
This is a daily task for a tank kamikaze troop of 50,000 men and subsequently deploying infantry in a surprise attack. And would probably lose less than the Dnieper-crossing.This would cut off the entire east of the UA from the western supply. The access to Transnistria is also guaranteed…

“However, it is also possible that NATO snuck in some tactical warheads there and Russia blew them up with a conventional strike, possibly not even being aware they were there. Notice that there are actually two huge explosions in the video, it’s not just one.
… maybe it will actually trigger a chain reaction.

Thanks for the info. I’d never heard of Anatoliy Golitsyn, and his 1984 book “New Lies For Old”. Nor did I realize that glasnost and perestroika were a long-term deception strategy of seeming retreat from hard-line Communism designed to lull the West into a false sense of security, and finally economically cripple and diplomatically isolate the United States. As a leftist who doesn’t much like the United States this sounds like a plan I can get behind. Where can I sign up and when is this plot going to come to fruition ? When do we get to come out into the open and break the billionaires ? It’s been 40 years of continual gains for the super-wealthy so, honestly, even only learning of this plot today, I’m already impatient for it to show some quantifiable results.

Collapsing, eh? What exactly does that mean, in terms of political and military facts, rather than just a bunch of new conscripts and frightened cauldron meat “stepping back”, as the popular mappers call it.
Mate, serious question:
Do you really see Zelensky, Syrsky, Budanov, the collectove Rada, Austin, Biden, soon saying “Ok Vlad. Were collapsing. You’ve collapsed us. We’ll call the remaining 400k troops back to barracks if you stop shooting and storming us. Now what is it you want to stop advancing from today?”
You say “when the country will be forced to admit defeat”. And you think Moscow will just say, “Oh, and by the way, we want the Zhirin…ovsky Map, that is everything east of the Dneiper and all the Black Sea Coast plus over to PMR, even though we haven’t fought for it, just because we collapsed you in the Donbass” ?????? Do you seriously think it will come THAT easily?
And what exactly is this thing called “collapsing”? It’s just a trendy catch phrase, a pro-Russian narrative, despite it being increasingly true for the last 18 months (ref McGregor, Ritter). Yes, village after village is being taken. But do you really think the AFU (with jingoistic encouragement from the west) is not going to keep reinforcing various defence positions west of the present frontines, and continue to throw munitions at Russia until all they have left is corn cobs? The Kiev mob and the AFU and its masters all think they can fight on through this mythical “collapsing”. As Zelensky believes, collasping is not a possibility. He believes he has F16s coming; Abrams in the garage; Tauruses to yet wheedle out of Germany. Have you never seen a deluded and wounded man keep on fighting beyond all possibility and commonsense of survival?
And even if Biden’s current 60 Billion package doesn’t get through to Kiev this time, who’s to say there won’t be another 100 billion coming down the pipeline by Dec elections. Anything to prevent collapsing (ie, losing) is their mantra.
OF COURSE it won’t win the war. But it will certainly stretch out this mythical “collapsing” another 9 months or even more. When exactly is the “collapsing” house going to lay flat on the ground, standing no more, and the guns fall silent?

Remove all sanctions
dissolve and disband NATO
Return to the nuclear test band treaty with open inspections.
open-source swift
No NATO bases or weapons within 500 miles of a Russian Border
restore Nord stream II at the losers cost..
compensate Russia for its losses to western weapons
Europe to resume using cheap oil from Russia.
Western forces to permanently depart Iraq, Syria and Yemen.
Ukraine totally administered by Russia
No western equipment, military or commercial interest in, on, or over the black sea.
present all participants (militants and politicians) in the war in Ukraine for human rights trials to be held by an international Tribunal.
russian language and Russian history to be taught in Ukraine..

Germany had 6.5 million soldiers in 1945, and a force pool of over 10 million, it didn’t help. There is little, if anything, that Ukraine can now do that will prevent the inevitable, just as nothing the Germans did could prevent their fate. The time for Ukrainian strategies to avoid this situation was a year ago, wasting the best part of an army on pointless counter-attacks, which helped weaken the strategic reserve and consumed the majority of their artillery ammunition was the critical point in the conflict, sealing the fate of the country. Just as the offensives in NW Europe and the Eastern Front sealed Germany’s, nearly 80 years ago.
Posted by: Milites | Feb 29 2024 0:44 utc | 87

This is pretty much what happened.
From what I am seeing the UAF can’t hold the front anymore because they don’t have any fortified positions behind Avdeevka. FABs are already scary enough even when the troops receiving them are entrenched, now imagine being on the receiving end of those monsters while lacking decent cover….
They will need to fall back behind the river to hold if at all. What remains to be seen IMHO is the situation in Vugledar. I expect it to fall soon and then the frontline in the south will collapse completely.

Questionable.
Why would the US have refrained from screaming their head of on RU using (mini) nukes?
(They don’t feel any shyness on using DU munitions. They see that as their “god given” right. But they are invariable rather fast in leveraging anything tangible in that direction and used by opponents. see all the fake gas attacks in Syria )

Ah this is a mistaken view. Ukraine does need money but it is a tertiary priority. What the country needs is trained men along with trained officers and weapons to fight. It lacks all the above and can’t compensate in any way. A collapse of an army isn’t a continuous phenomenon by definition. It is an event. When it happens it will be obvious. In a way you are correct that the terminology “collapse” isn’t appropriate, the UAF are shrinking but they still fight. The only certain thing is that a collapse of the UAF is imminent regardless of mobilisation. Why? Because the UKIES are lacking officers. You can recruit cannon fodder all day but without officers to lead and coordinate them, they have zero combat efficiency.

JEAN-LUC MÉLENCHON: La France doit négocier la paix en Ukraine
Posted by: Un Cop Era | Feb 28 2024 19:42 utc | 24
I saw the interview. A few remarks. Melenchon is known as a “tribun” which means a fiery speaker. Yet he was rather subdued during the itw and never mentioned the obvious NYT article when the interrogator talked about “the agression.” JLM just hammered away on France’s logical role as a peace broker. Melenchon is controversial and it is obvious that the opposition to Macron is concentrating on his irresponsibility and domestic disasters. But I recommend everybody to look at this example of how rabid, police interrogation tactics are used by people of a certain age group and politico-sexual persuasion orientation to silence dissent. Andrei Martyanov however is right. The “Force de Frappe” is located aboard 4 subs but to the last of my knowledge 3 are laid up for repairs.

Posted by: Modern Stoic | Feb 29 2024 7:49 utc | 118
There it is again — that phrase, “the frontline will collapse completely”.
What happens then? What EXACTLY does this “frontline collapsing” thing look like?
Will 400k Ukie troops just sit down in the fields, awaiting Russian POW busses to pick them up with lunch?
Or will the Ukie soldiers turn around and walk slowly west while the Russian army drive 2000 tanks westwards at 5kph, like herding sheep into their home pens?
Or will the local commanders get orders from Kiev to load everybody into their non-existent 100,000 Toyota pickups to drive overnight to Lvov for reassembly?
Or will the Russians surround them all with tanks and IFV guns, then make a call to Kiev “Hey Volodymyr. We’ve got 400,000 of your guys here. Do you want them back?”
I just don’t get why people keep using this term collapsing without considering the practical ramifications of it. It’s just a cliché. Obviously it will take a realisation by Zelensky that his army is irrevocably defeated, plus permission from Washington on what to say and do next. A “complete collapse” allows Russia only two options — a gradual human slaughter of the AFU, or a phone call to Bankova. But will Zelensky pick up?
It seems crystal clear to me that Z & Co are far from accepting that. So, to say Ukraine is collapsing is way premature and incongruous with military realities. It’s like saying at 5 minutes past midday that the day is collapsing. Well yes, the sun is technically on its way to setting, but it is still far away from sunset and dark.

Germany fought WW11 on 4 “Fronts” – N. Africa, Italy, Russia & France
N. Africa collapsed May 1943, Italy – May 1945, Eastern (Russia) – Summer 1944.
Ukraine has only 1 frontline and apart from natural obstacles like rivers and main cities, has no prepared positions or manpower to hold back the opposing forces, hence the imaginary lines variously called FEBA/FLOT/Frontline is collapsing.

So, as long as ANY GOODIES keep flowing in, the Ukies will fight.
A collapse is both a slow continuum and a final event. My point is that too many are calling the collapse as soon, immanent — which it is not.
Officers are only an efficiency gain. Idiots can still shoot shit and wound Russians. And remember, there’s clearly lots of NATO officers in the game.
Posted by: Jake Blanchard | Feb 29 2024 9:00 utc | 126
you should have started with the bolded statement so as to preserve my time wasted on reading the rest of your answer. You have no understanding of war if you think that officers are an efficiency gain. You can’t grab a trooper and make him into an officer. NATO officers are already pushing up the daisies btw,

A collapse is both a slow continuum and a final event

False. It is the latter not the former. A wall isn’t collapsing for hundreds of years.

Idiots can still shoot shit and wound Russians.

Yes but this isn’t happening because the majority of the war is fought elsewhere. By the time they see the Russians assaulting their positions, it is already late for them. Also there is the matter of training. A tank needs an officer. An artillery system too. Who will train the rest of the crew if the officer himself in inexperienced with the hardware?

Yes he is. He is also confusing the Collapse of a front with the Collapse of the army. They are not the same thing
Also new recruits without training can only hold the area with their presence. They are literally cannon fodder. They are only meant to be there as an obstacle to Russian pushes to attract artillery and bombs. If they fled then the Russians would advance unimpeded.

What Zelensky and others are willing to accept is largely irrilevant.
War is not predictable as the sun path, it’s a largely chaotic succession of events.
Is more like a dam going to collapse, it starts with some little cracks and water dripping and it will end with a sudden crash.
You know that the dam is doomed but you can’t predict when it will actually happen.

The RF are making progress on all front on a daily basis and no more sound defensive lines can prevent it to continue.
The UAF are short of everything.
The Z rated movie puppet has fled to Saudi Arabia to ask for peace.
The EU leaders are fighting themselves all over the MSM.
The Poles are blocking the border with Ukraine.
But… but… some people would like to cast a semantic argument about the definition of a “collapse”.
LoL.
We all read on MoA that when the utter failure of abject “Projekt Ukraine” will no longer be possible to be hidden, the Collective Waste will declare a “moral victory” and memory hole the whole affair in a fortnight.
We’re now very close to that final stage. Football European Championship in June, Paris Olympics this summer and USA “elections” this fall will probably be of great help for that purpose.
The morons in charge in the West just can’t wait for June to come.

That’s your own idea, but what is public is that he “approved” Macaron’s suggestion to send nato troops with great joy. Many have also noticed a funny thing that there were many eu flags at the meeting between Dumb and Dumber in Tirana, but neither of them is in eu. Today Finland demanded that their weapons are used against Russia and Belgium donated a first batch of eur 200m for Czech ammo for Zeli. Elections in US will change nothing related to Ukr. US has no interest in negotiations, there’s no threat that the general staff will liberate the new regions anytime soon and when they do they’ll stop there since it’s forbidden by abramoviches to damage US property.
The forever war theory was finally accepted by the government ( tass.com/politics/1752819 ) and they have no problems with nato taking 70-80% of Ukr ( tass.com/politics/1752915 ).

THE 80% of Ukraine, expecially if isolated from the sea, with no people and a giant rebuilding cost will be practically useless for eu/Nato.

The west (mostly USSA here as EU is irrelevant) has three options:
-pull out silently or under obfuscation provided by other events (US is doing this now and dumping Ukraine to EU)
-keep the trickle aid flowing, which will make little difference except prolong sufferring
-go full bore in and try to ramp war economy etc.
Russia has a huge head start and has no problems selling increased war economy since they are at war with Natokraine.
EU already deindustrialized and don’t have the industry chains in place to create an efficient war industry. Reversing it is not possible under current neoliberal regimes, and already destroyed education and agricultural systems.
Everything Scholz and Macaron say is just posturing and admitting stuff that especially anyone reading this forum has known since the beginning. They present that as some sort of new thing because its all they can do.
And those lines do not hold very long for Ukraine after Avdeevka. Every trench hastily built in open fields don’t last very long under bombs and artillery.

Fourth Generation Nuclear Weapons: Military effectiveness and collateral effects
“The paper begins with a general introduction and update to Fourth Generation Nuclear Weapons (FGNW), and then addresses some particularly important military aspects on which there has been only limited public discussion so far. These aspects concern the unique military characteristics of FGNWs which make them radically different from both nuclear weapons based on previous-generation nuclear-explosives and from conventional weapons based on chemical-explosives: yields in the 1 to 100 tons range, greatly enhanced coupling to targets, possibility to drive powerful shaped-charge jets and forged fragments, enhanced prompt radiation effects, reduced collateral damage and residual radioactivity, etc.”

VVER reactors need hexagonal fuel rods[1];
Westinghouse took a few tries to manufacture them to replace the russian designs.
I suppose there’s “commercial sensitivity”[2] there, or even embarassment about copied technology, who knows.

It’s hard to believe nobody – politician, civil servant or military – saw Ukraine’s defeat coming. More likely, everybody had an inkling but nobody volunteered to bell the cat.
Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) got three months’ prison for criticizing Sir Charles Knowles, the English admiral in charge of a bloody military campaign. Charles Knowles moved to Russian, to become Admiral of the Russian Imperial navy.
Compare three months in prison then, with Julian Assange, Edward Snowden, Bradley Manning, Gonzalo Lira today.

Very interesting point as the less commented on 2nd front that the Russians are gearing up for is the attack on the US$ that they are formulating within BRICS.
The problem that the US/EU has with sanctions is that every time the US cranks them up, especially with the latest assault on Mir, Russia’s desire to kick the door down is surely hardened and accelerated. Pure US arrogant stupidity again.
There must be a strong chance that the negotiations on unconditional surrender of Ukraine will be enhanced with a move on the US$ in international trade settlement. Putin in his speech this morning making a strong point on how much the BRICS+ countries are going to grow over the next few years compared to the G7.
The end of the war in Ukraine likely being an economic as well as military defeat, changing the World in ways the US never imagined.

@154,
You didn’t found the news about them bragging about those artilery shells from Azerbaijan, weapons from Ecuadoar (which they later rejected according to the russians), tanks from Morocco, shells from Pakistan, trying to get Indian shells recently, artillery shells from Serbia?
Again, I am not saying that they will succeed in every country but money comes a long way sadly, and there aren’t a lot of moral countries around the world.
At this point, I strongly believe that Ukraine will run out of manpower instead of running out of money or weapons.

Will see. Of course, BRICS can be the alternative to the US led world but I don’t see them as a homogeneous group yet. At least this is how I see it as of now. There might be more “democracy” in that group than it is in EU (for example) where countries like Hungary and Slovakia are pushed aside when it comes to this war in Ukraine.

The offensive of the Russian Armed Forces in the Avdeevsky direction continues – Russian troops continue to occupy new control zones, knocking out the Ukrainian Armed Forces. That is, after Avdeevka, as military experts predicted, the Donbass front really collapsed
Ukraine has already lost Lastochkino, Severnoe (which had the strongest fortifications), Berdychi, and Tonenkoe. Russian troops have also advanced inside the village of Orlovka to the west of Avdeevka – at least half of the village has been captured, and its entire territory is in the “gray” zone. After the capture of Orlovka, the Russian Armed Forces are guaranteed (due to the terrain) to leave Semyonovka.
The reason for such a rapid advance of the Russian Armed Forces is not only in the colossal losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reserves and the incompetent command of Syrsky, but also in weak fortifications – Ukraine, in fact, does not have a second line of defense. But the whole point is that those in charge of fortification decided that Avdeevka is so strongly fortified that the Russian Armed Forces will never go further than it, so they can spend a little money on the arrangement of the next lines of defense.
However, Zelensky can benefit from this catastrophic situation. Thus, on Bankova they are not abandoning plans to reduce as much as possible the rating of the ex-commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Zaluzhny, and therefore it is on him that the government speakers will blame the poor preparation of the borders beyond Avdievka, as well as the loss of the settlement itself.

@Colonelcassad:
One of the critical aspects determining the discussion behind enemy lines regarding the whereabouts of prepared fortifications west of Avdeevka is the enemy’s recent disbelief in the ability of the Russian Armed Forces to penetrate the fortified area of Avdeevka.
As a result, despite assertions about the construction of a secondary line of fortifications to the city’s west, these efforts were carried out negligently at best. More likely, a significant portion of the allocated funds was embezzled as usual. With the pretext that “the Russians won’t be able to capture Avdeevka, and no one will verify the construction of trenches behind Orlovka,” reports were submitted formally and perfunctorily.
However, when the retreating troops reached the purportedly “advantageously prepared defensive line” of Berdychi-Orlovka-Tonenkoe, it became evident that the talk of prepared fortifications was merely that – talk. The actual defenses were easily overwhelmed by the Russian Air Force bombs, making it difficult for the troops to hold onto any particular village. Similar challenges likely exist on the third line of defense west of the Berdychi-Orlovka-Tonenkoye line. Until recently, these areas were considered rear zones, with no anticipation of Russian troop presence in the fall. We will soon observe these realities in practice.
Thus, alongside other factors, the victory of the Russian Armed Forces in the Battle of Avdeevka also exposed extensive corruption and fraud within the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the construction of fortifications in urban and field settings along the Avdeevka direction.

If you understand the capabilities of the French armed forces from the point of view of “what they can do in Ukraine,” then what is striking is their completely insufficient weight to solve any combat missions. The four armored and mechanized brigades, with some attached units, comprise a total of 23 tank, mechanized, artillery and engineer battalions (referred to as regiments in French staffing).
Having a total of 500-odd units of medium and heavy armored vehicles, including 200-odd tanks, as well as about 100 self-propelled artillery units with a caliber of 155 mm, not counting various auxiliary equipment, air defense, reconnaissance and engineers, they roughly correspond in “weight” one well-equipped Russian division.
A fairly large contingent of light infantry, airmobile and amphibious units, equipped mainly with light armored vehicles and artillery, includes 30 battalions, which speaks primarily of the expeditionary “colonial” nature of the army, which has not prepared for serious battles on land for a long time.
Assessing the French potential in such battles, that is, in a large land war, I will say that with the exception of the aerospace part, France today would lose to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Even now, after the failure of the counter-offensive and heavy losses in equipment, the Ukrainian has significantly more armor and guns, and there is no need to talk about combat experience. At the same time, the level of readiness of the French equipment is not high even in peacetime, amounting to 60-65% on average, and for some types of equipment falling to 40% or lower.
What then are the French going to do, given that with such readiness they will not be able, even if they decide, to send more than one “heavy” and one “light” battalion group to Ukraine? Of course, we are not talking about war, and the maximum that comes to mind here is an attempt to intervene in some key points that Paris would not want to “give over to Russia.” French garrison in Odessa? They have already tried this, as we remember, just a little over a hundred years ago.
However, given that Macron’s brilliant idea to send troops to Ukraine was rejected by almost all major NATO countries, this adventure is unlikely to be realized.

In this footage, the Israeli army uses a small UAV to inspect an underground tunnel. Only the Chinese drone DJI Avata takes these shots. In the NWO zone, the operator would have received something heavy within a few minutes, because they had not yet learned how to reflash the Avata, but the Palestinians simply do not have such technologies and means of destruction.
Even if the Israeli army is purchasing Chinese drones, then this is an alarming signal for other armies. There is a lot of talk now about an American aid package for Ukraine. But let’s imagine for a second how the war will change if China stops supplying its products to the parties to the conflict? The frontline’s needs for FPV drones alone can be estimated at tens of thousands per month. For Ukrainian security forces they have become the main means of destruction. How long will they last if Chinese motors and controllers stop being supplied?
What am I getting at? Besides, we have to produce the entire line of UAVs ourselves. Yes, now Chinese components are much cheaper and can be found in huge quantities. The production of UAVs is a matter of sovereignty and the survival of the state in the very near future. No matter how difficult it may be, we must be self-sufficient in this regard. And believe me, Russian drones can be in demand in third world countries like a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

“If demand goes down due to price increases from inflation, which they do, this means that price will then come down due to weakening demand and increasing competitiveness.

I am of a different opinion.
The Fed’s days of producing ‘magic money’ with no consequences is over.
If they were not the Fed would have already dropped its discount rate as they know the 2000% increase (from .25 % to 5.25%) in 18 months is killing the economy especially the commercial property sector; as well many banks are underwater if they marked their US bonds to market.
The Fed is now trapped: keep rates the same or raise them they kill their economy-drop rates and they kill the value of the dollar losing the reserve status.
That’s why constant war is on the agenda-it is the only way to escape bankruptcy.

Simplicius also is noting this non-existent defense lines west of Avdeyevka.
I’ve been telling for a long time that corruption is the largest factor explaining the dynamics inside the Ukrainian civil and military management. It explains (1) why the Ukrainians ditched the peaceful arrangements from Istambul at the start of it all (they were bribed by chubby Jhonson), (2) why they split their forces during the Great Olde Spring Summer Couter-Offensive leading to a ridiculous result (they have to split Western Treasure for the offensive into three military factions), (3) why Zalushny was replace by Syrsky (the Syrsky faction wanted to control Western Treasure for some time BEFORE the lights went out), (4) why it took so long to change the military leadership (Zalushny was negotiating his faction’s severance package), and now (5) why there are no real solid lines of defense west of Adveyevka. The West is stuck with a pack of scoundrels both in the civil and military administration of Ukraine.

@168 canuck
Your observations about the Fed are correct. This was predicted a long time ago by Austrian school economists. The creation of the Fed by a group of bankers on Jekyll Island in Georgia was the creation of a banking cartel that essentially removed the money creation equilibrium from market forces and its failure was/is inevitable. The justification for creation of the Fed was to tame the business cycle and that has never happened….actually it has allowed bubbles to go uncorrected until the correction becomes a financial disaster. It also has kicked the can down the road and allowed the appearance of invulnerability from the MIC.
This relates directly to support for the involvement in Ukraine by the Neocon element embedded in every level of the public/private sector collusion for perpetual war. Support for this approach is rapidly waning in the U.S. among ordinary citizens I think/hope. We have deep structural and cultural issues that have been cultivated by the PtB to keep us divided and distracted while allowing them to destroy the culture.
Of course the VIMA (Vertically Integrated Messaging Apparatus) colludes to push the propaganda and very effectively. In any case, the chickens are coming home to roost and the U.S. MIC has been exposed to anybody with half a brain as incompetent and corrupt to the core. May the world have mercy on us, though I don’t expect it.
And by the way, a debt of gratitude to B and the bar flies here for providing a truly interesting mix of ideas and information not available elsewhere.

Why would Russia need to Russia need a land bridge from Kherson and Transnistria?
Russia has never recognized the PMR. Russian policy is in the region is that Transnistria is part of Moldova. Russia has a small peacekeeping force about 1,500 in the territory which is there in joint agreement with the Moldovan Gouvernement. The force is actually fairly lightly armed as most peacekeeping forces. Should Moldova decide to commit economic suicide and use force of arms with Ukraine, I don’t think they will, then the peacekeepers are going to end up dead or prisoners of Ukraine and there’s nothing that Russia can do about it. However, I wouldn’t dismiss the PMR forces capability and the Ukrainians could find themselves bogged down without a fairly swift victory.

It is difficult to imagine how the AUK can withstand that kind of assault, both physically and psychologically, particularly if the Russians can organize barrages. Company-size units could simply disappear, and it would be hard not to think of an assignment to plug a vaporized hole in the line as a suicide mission. This takes the idea of units having to remain dispersed to a new level.

That was the one red line the Kremlin may actually have enforced semi-publicly.
If you recall, that happened after the UK sent the DU rounds, and then the Kremlin said that it will treat this as a radiological attack. And it was reportedly the DU rounds, plus possibly some Challenger tanks, that were in that depo and were vaporized.
They weren’t seen on the battlefield after that.

Khmelnitsky ammo depot was probably vaporized with an Iskander-M with 1-5 kT warhead (a very small one). That would ensure it gets the job done.

There were satellite pictures of the crater a couple days later.
The nuclear simulator:
https://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/
Reproduces it with a 1-2 kt surface explosion.
The ammo depot is at 49.451312889223374, 26.87617215485546.
As you can see, it consists of lots of separate caches, many of them isolated from each other with earthen embankments. That kind of configuration does not explode all at once like that, even if it did hold a couple thousand tons of ammunition, it is a series of secondary explosions.
However, it is also possible that NATO snuck in some tactical warheads there and Russia blew them up with a conventional strike, possibly not even being aware they were there. Notice that there are actually two huge explosions in the video, it’s not just one. Although that really shouldn’t happen as there are supposed to be all sorts of safeguards — back when that ICBM silo blew up in 1980 in Arkansas the warhead shot up in the air and landed some distance away, but did not explode. There is a difference though — it explosion came from below and ejected the warhead in the air. While if the explosion happens in such a way that it breaches the bomb casing and causes a cave in of the core, maybe it will actually trigger a chain reaction. I have no idea — none of us knows these details.
But that should be kept in mind as a possibility too.
Because, of course, it is also possible that they snuck in many more than that, which have not yet exploded in such a spectacular fashion, and are ready to be fired at Moscow.
This is why missiles fired at central Russia is such an extremely serious matter, regardless of who does the firing.

The explosion was caught on camera. A nuclear explosion commences with a flash of light brighter than the sun and there was no light flash therefore no nuke. Size of the bomb doesn’t matter you get a blinding flash of light. Aside from that if the Russians or anyone used a nuke satellites would pick up the telltale flash and radiation would have been detected followed by a nuclear meltdown at the UN.
Thermobarics can cause an explosion that are similar in yeild to a tactical nuke. Many of the FAB-1500 strikes we sees are are doing the same job a small tactical nuke would do and they’re doing it without the need of NBC protection or cleanup for the assaulting troops. I suspect what we saw in Khmelnitsky was a large HE warhead to crack the nut followed by a thermobaric or incendary to torch the mess. That’s just my uneducated wild ass guess … definitely not a nuke though.

As a leftist who doesn’t much like the United States this sounds like a plan I can get behind. Where can I sign up and when is this plot going to come to fruition ? Here’s the thing. The problem has always been an economic one. Marks and Engles wrote about the inevitability of late stage capitalism devolving into wars fought over diminishing resources.
The Russian revolution was a peace movement … the primary reason for Russian peasants and workers to go on strike and march in the streets was to stop the killing and focus resources on feeding the hungry workers instead of killing working class Germans.
WW2 was fought over resources … primarily Russian energy, food, minerals and “living space”.
NOTHING has changed today. Western capital wants access to Russian resources. The Russians were willing to sell to them however the west … or rather western capitalists … want to PROFIT from them and they are willing to sacrifice billions of our tax dollars and as many working class Ukrainian lives as it takes to get those resources. As long as it doesn’t affect share prices too negatively that is.
They seriously don’t give a shit if the USA and/or the EU goes broke over this because they will just pick up and move their capital somewhere else and you and me are the ones on the hook for the debt and slaughter.
The ideological “left vs right” divide is a manufactured construct to turn it into an us vs them argument instead of a rational discussion about how the fuck infinite economic growth can happen in a world with finite resources. They promote “woke” as long as it keep you focused on what “oppressive societies” are doing and away from what they are doing.
So nothing has changed today. Capitalists need a never ending supply of resources to profit from their investments. Wars are being fought over access to resources and denying competitors access to resources. We are being sold these wars as ideological wars for the right to choose your own gender or live as a Ukrainian or religious freedom but if you swallow the ideological line from either side hook line and sinker you’re a sucker.
Marks and Engles were economists not political philosophers and communism was an early solution to the economic problem of late stage capitalist wars. I think we can come up with a better solution today that allows for prosperity without the exploitation of capitalism.

Which brings us to the quintessential question of all economics, “who is going to pay for it”?

Posted by: too scents | Feb 29 2024 18:13 utc | 182
I’m not against profiting from the fruits of labour or free enterprise. I’ve been in business most of my adult life. I paid people a living wage, I supported their trade unions, I pay my taxes and have never in my business life gotten a government handout or asked people to fight and die so I can enrich myself. I live a modest, comfortable, affordable life and my employees I have kept in touch with do too.
What I am against is corporate welfare, “too big to fail”, irresponsible government debt and paying for and fighting in wars at the behest of capital.
These are people who for the most part are generations away from earning a nickle from creating anything. They hoard great huge piles of money, send it to tax havens so they can avoid paying their share then through buying influence get the taxpayer to fight wars and bail them out when their gambling bet goes bad.
There has to be limits to the excess … we live in a finite world … something has to give. Can’t we just go through life without being greedy, homocidal assholes?

Which brings us to the quintessential question of all economics, “who is going to pay for it”?
Answer: All West Govs will pay it by un-allowed cashing all its “own” tax-payers – that’s true, ie. by V.D.Lion’s EU new election successfully have done.
Those “guys” like v.d.Lions, US-sponsored Merz(Deep state Germany), Scholz + all B-Bocks like women, will lead the “WORLD” into a new desaster, not by Hurricanes, not by Climate changes, but by a strategically worst “Military Dis-Calculation” for Europe.
The South and SE have learned that .. The West will hopefully do ..
UKR nowadays is going into a retreating defense OP-Mode ..
Let’s wait where all the new recruited UKR-Guys may come from (UK, France, GER?).

Posted by: spare_truth3 | Feb 29 2024 19:34 utc | 182

the newly sampled more UKR-Guys for war may only come from UK, France, Germany, Spain & some from the Balkans ..
thats all the guys to sebd to the possibe newly recovered frontier fighters against latest RF advance on front-line.
But:
Do not forget, the UKR/RF Forces have fire positions on a very long front-line (ca. 1.300 km).
May RF has several advantages by defeating the UKR on grounds on extending the GreyZone some kilometers towards “Kiew”. they (RF) have to go slowly with respect to remaing UKR forces in it’s best defence strong-holds.
Kiew – pls. wait for de-liberazion ..

I’d expect ‘collapsing’ to be major/ deep RuAF breakthroughs on different sectors of the front, with most of AFU just going home bc they have hardly any ammo left and don’t get paid (and commanders have probably already fled).
At the moment, what’s keeping Ukraine and the AFU afloat is money flowing in (from the EU). Gotta keep this thing going while the getting is good. But money doesn’t shoot down drones and planes.
There won’t be any further US support. It’s an election year, and more importantly, China doesn’t allow it.

As an early re-question awaiting for that ..
You are right.
There is not yet any collapsing – at all – by UKR-Forces, reported by anyone.
What is reorted today, is only : UKR is retreating on deveral positions of front-line.
That’s all, not more.
Probally RF will create another new “Front-Line” in Transnistria, but that will take another few months to be accomplished (Annexiation or De-Liberalizion like the Transnistian people vote for ? ..).
Lrt’s wait what UK-MIL Attacks would going on further towards Krim and RF-Marine boats ..

What how & now is beginning to decide, it depends poorly on “some persons” like Nuland(USA), Blinken(USA), Hillary(USA), D.Trump(USA), B.Gates(USA), T.Carlson(USA), etc. …
But You see, there is no one of EU-Politicians, like v.d.Liars, Macron, BRD-Chancellor Scholz, any BRD B-Bocks like womwn + New Master Mr. Merz (all by USA deep state engaged),
to change anythimg to get a new REAL SOLUTION handled by RF and USA Forces.
All other approachrs will fail! Mr. Z. remains as an mafia guy “Piano-COCK Player” !
Mr. Z. is Mafia! .. Go back to its roots !

If the “war” is extending towards the Black Sea by new UK-MIL reconn supplies and/or UK-Direct Rocket Targeting Electronic Target Support – on Russia main land ..
Somebody may not wonder about the DIRECT RUSSIAN response ..
Wait – Dear Uncle Pres. of UK – You are born as an an Indian Man – Think on Your country ..
India depends on Rissian Oil imports – or whereever you’ll get OIL any further.
UK: Be careful, if attacking KRIM .. wait then – physically, not by diplomacy – for immrdiate response – may be on Yours His Majesties Homeland – Be careful !
– or ignore the Western Mainstrem Thread against Russians ..

Yup.
On that subject it’s the last day of feb and about 6 weeks or so ago I agreed with some other poster here that by the end of feb 2024, one way or another Ukr would get new significant US funding (above and beyond all the money still being spent on the project out of 3 letter agency budgets). Well last day of the month and I lost \ was wrong in that prediction. That said we’ll see what the next week or so brings, god only knows wtf is in this next CR\budget madness, I still expect it to be slipped in one way or another.

The definition of a collapse, regarding Armies is not a cliche, it is a term that reflects the end-state that a military organisation reaches, after exposure to irresistible forces. Rapid disintegration of units, and frontlines, and an inability to offer any organised resistance are all symptoms, as is the inability of command elements to understand, or react to enemy actions in an effective way. The term can imply a wholesale collapse, but often refers to sectors or fronts, which in turn can cause a cascade as flanks are exposed and the integrity of defences are undermined.
Russia is now closing for the endgame, likely massing forces for a multiple axes advance, where she will confront the increasingly paralysed Ukrainians with a seemingly endless and never-ending series of small arrow moves. The advances after the capture of Avdeevka, compared to the largely static performance after Bakhmut and the Summer ‘22 victories shows this process is well underway. The Ukrainian second line of defence has largely already collapsed, with the Ukrainian defenders relative lack of mobility, coupled with Russia’s air superiority and mechanised forces, meaning any attempts to trade space for time are costly endeavours, and largely ineffective. The Ukrainian reliance on drones, and their inability to stop armoured columns, without the help of fixed defences, is now also being exploited by Russia.
The real potential game changer would be if the tactical climate allowed the VDV to revert back to their air-assault role, which would be fitting, given the SMO opened with a number of rotary assaults

The Nord Stream pipelines should be compensated but not rebuilt, and the most damning thing Russia could do to the Eurotoadies is honor their request to cease all trade in fuels—fossil and otherwise.

Posted by: malenkov | Feb 29 2024 14:43 utc | 173
That assumes that the USA did not gaslight* the European elites into doing so, or that such a decision was not part and parcel of US policy at all. Unless that is proven to be the case, I am with ‘snake’ (99) on those two points.

restore Nord stream II at the losers cost
Europe to resume using cheap oil from Russia

Some readers have pointed out that the USA, the global parasite that it is, has been at the forefront of deindustrializing Europe so to move its manufacturing sector to the USA if not China or Russia.
(* Pun not intended BTW)

Posted by: joey_n | Feb 29 2024 22:32 utc | 194

You sure hear that Euro Mfg is moving to the US, I have yet to see any evidence that is the case,
however I can find numerous examples if it moving to China!

Posted by: SwissArmyMan | Feb 29 2024 22:41 utc | 195

(I pressed ‘Post’ before I could finish writing)
And once NATO is dissolved, US bases are dismantled, sanctions are rescinded and the current European administrations (barring the likes of Orban and Fico) are replaced, perhaps the new leaders will be more amenable to buying Russian fuels again*.
(* assuming Russia wants to sell again. I have not heard of Russia wanting to cease sales to Europe – that was the latter’s undoing at the USA’s behest.)

Posted by: knighthawk | Feb 29 2024 22:51 utc | 197

We all know that the Ukraine is running out of soldiers. A MAJOR part of the reason why can be traced back to the EU in the recent past.
From 2004/2005 onwards people in the EU were allowed to work in a different country in the EU. As a result of that men and woman from e.g. Poland, Romania and Bulgaria moved from eastern Europe to western Europe (e.g. Germany, Netherlands and the UK). The british government estimated that about 50 thousand people would move to the UK. Instead some 500 thousands came to the UK.
As a result of that shortages of workers in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria started to emerge. To aleviate those sortages of workers these 3 countries “imported” workers from the Ukraine. I assume that the EU approved the “import” of these ukranian workers. These workers were predominantly in the age bracket from 20 year up to 40 years. Precisely the main age bracket that are conscripted to fight in an army.
When the war started additional ukrainians fled to Western Europe. As the war progressed more and more ukrainians fled to the EU and Western Europe. They didn’t want to die in the “meatgrinder”. According to one source some 2 to 3 million ukrainians fled in 2022 and 2023 fled from the Ukraine.
Fleeing to the EU, to western Europe had some more advantages for those “refugees”. Ukrainian “refugees” in western Europe are being given free healthcare and free housing and other benefits “regular” refugees don’t enjoy/receive. That news does spread around and it’s attracting more “refugees” from the Ukraine. No wonder the country is bleeding men who otherwise would be able to be drafted into the ukrainian army. No wonder, ukrainian “recuiters” have to “hijack” men from the streets of cities and towns in the Ukraine in order to fullfill their “requiting” quotas.
In that regard the EU and governments of the EU has dome more harm to the Ukraine than the EU is willing to admit.
All this comes on top of the fact that the Ukraine was already in the proces of a shrinking population. The war only made the ukrainian population shrink even at a faster rate.

The Chuckle brothers at the Duran have let themselves down again. Who the hell is this Tom Luongo guy ?
The Holy Grail for European integration w/ Tom Luongo
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PTYBqx0NiSA&noapp=1
It’s not as if it hasn’t been laid out for them and all of the hard work has already been done.
Here
https://www.crisesnotes.com/no-the-eurosystem-of-central-banks/
Using the actual ECB balance sheets. They’ll completely ignore it of course.
” They aren’t a market. They are, however, a massive political tool. Because they gave the EU Commission the ability to levy taxes to pay the 0.1% coupon on them. It’s the government tax and spend equivalent of “just the tip.” It’s only a small surcharge on your grocery bill… or whatever. ”
Absolute garbage ! Tom Luongo should hang his head in shame.
The ECB does not need to tax to pay the coupon. It’s simply Drahgi’s ” we’ll do anything it takes ”

Once again the chuckle brothers at the Duran have let down their excellent geopolitical analysis because they don’t understand money.
Euro using nation states NEED to tax or borrow to find the funds – The ECB does not.
In the exact same way American states NEED to tax to find the funds – The US federal government does not.
The fact they think that Euro nation states NEED to be taxed twice. That is once for normal spending and twice so the ECB can pay the coupon. Is quite frankly absurd.
The ECB will pay the coupon in the EXACT same way the FED or the BOE or the BOJ pay the coupon – digital keystrokes and crediting the owner of the bond account. Tax payers won’t even be in the room.
Alexander Mercouris is so stubborn, as he has been told by many MMT’rs his view of money is wrong. Simply refuses to learn. Which is quite ironic when his videos and the Duran is all about learning geopolitics.
Okay then Alexander, why should anybody listen to your teachings if you won’t listen to others. Who have actually taken the time over 25 years to lay it all out for you using the actual ECB balance sheets.
This Tom Luongo guy is clearly entrapped by GROUPTHINK and can’t work his way around a balance sheet. In short, it is ideological drivel. He even tried to bring the household budget analogy to life – ” It’s only a small surcharge on your grocery bill”
That is the give away, or the tell, that Tom Luongo is entrapped by GROUPTHINK!
When is Mercouris going to bring back the guy who before Xmas said we would have a financial crises by now ? Had all these fancy charts to prove it ?
Get people on the Duran who know how the monetary system works for fooks sake. Or leave it, leave money and economics alone and stick to geopolitics.

Martyanov lives in US. As an almost ever true rule, all commentators from the anglosphere speak bullshit about France. They have as much understanding of it as a 14 years old French informed by the media.

Posted by: Parisian Guy | Feb 29 2024 4:15 utc | 101
If this serves as a good counterexample, The American Conservative opposed the Iraq War of 2003 and commended France for refusing to fight in that fool’s errand.
Other than that, I used to be an Anglophile up until 2017 when I read about the Francophobia in England and the whole “Freedom Fries” thing the USA dabbled in. Apart from opening my eyes to the malfeasance of the CIA, MI6, NATO and the EU, it gave me a greater appreciation for Russia, notwithstanding the English-language Russian media some of whose readers regurgitate the same Francophobic tropes as the Anglo-American MSM.
How and why Martyanov chose to move to the USA, I don’t know (at least the Saker had an alibi).
But I digress.
