Strana with news from the 3rd (Azov neo-nazi) brigade (machine translated):

In the 3rd assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, they stated that there was not a single whole prepared position left in Avdiivka

At the time of the arrival of the 3rd assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Avdiivka , there was not a single whole prepared position left.

This was reported by an engineer of the 3rd OSHBR, whose words are quoted by the Ukrainian military telegram channel Deep State.

"In general, the situation is very similar to the Bakhmut defensive operation, when the infantry of the third assault group was forced to take up defense immediately from the march. And, as in the previous year, not a single position was prepared, because at the time of entry, those ramps that were held by subcontractors were already lost or destroyed," the engineer said.

Deep State considers the transfer of an assault unit to an operational environment to strengthen defensive actions "extremely strange."

And he notes that this decision was made before the change of the commander-in-chief, so you should not consider this rotation the idea of Syrsky.

The BBC News article heralds the imminent fall to the Russian Federation of Avdeevski.
The article is largely a NATO-Flag-Waving propaganda piece.
Among its gems is this:
“”…..the Russian military did not “count losses”, using its troops as cannon fodder.””
I seem to remember that it is the Ukro forces that have been fed into the meat-grinder with little or no ammo.
Perhaps that explains their present hopeless situation.

Hah! What’s “lost victories” in Ukrainian? I’ll throw out a bet that we’ll be seeing many such voluminous tomes in the future.
Blaming everything but the RF armed forces, for why NATO lost Ukraine.

I have no idea how you disable the early warning and missile tracking satellites in such a way that they appear to the people on the ground to be still functioning while the missiles are already flying, but presumably there is a way.
Posted by: shаdοwbanned | Feb 16 2024 9:50 utc | 186
Early warning or not, they can’t stop or estimate the trajectory of guided hypersonics anyway. Flight time is so short, flight path so variable, only a few will escape. More useful would be to blind enemy satellites when they pass over your head. Which already can be done with some of them, using EW or lasers if weather allows. Best method will be using other satellites, at close range. For which nuclear power will be required to keep them moving all day long. But to benefit from these weapons they need a strategy out of 1600s. And I don’t believe they would use anything anyway, they’re so afraid now they won’t squirt some fuel on a nato drone for a second time, in Crimea or Syria. Or sell weapons to anyone else. “Free trade” exists only if BiBiden allows.

It was earlier discussed, Russia could neuter UK nuclear and bomber forces with a couple of submarines loaded with Zircons. Any Nato early warning asset won’t even see it, even if they could, they couldn’t do anything. UK doesn’t even have an army, the only thing they have are the 4 SSBNs. The best window of opportunity is when all UK subs are sitting in shipyard because they break down and/or crews are having an LGBTQ strike.
It is not given US would even do anything if UK was obliterated.

Alexei Navalny died in prison today, Russia’s prison agency said. He was 47.
The Federal Prison Service said in a statement that Navalny felt unwell after a walk on Friday and lost consciousness. An ambulance arrived to try to rehabilitate him, but he died. There was no immediate confirmation of Navalny’s death from his team.

This is probably the worst week for Ukraine since Feb 2022.
The collapse of defenses in Adveyevka indicates that the UAF is no longer an effective force. Stories abound of panic, abandoning of positions, and running through the fields. I hope that for their own sake, the remaining forces choose to surrender. Although, if I were Russia, I would filter them carefully. Anyone who can’t speak fluent Ukrainian or Russian should be summarily executed, to save resources (POW camps aren’t free, and require food, electricity, and human resources to run.)
This is a dangerous time, I would expect the panic extend to the WH and something very risky might develop. The terror attacks on Belgorod are just one example. The House has gone on recess until the 28th, and with there only being 1 week to pass critical funding for the entire US government. After that, the prospects for more leech money for Ukraine are dim at best.
Cornered animals lash out even though they know they’re cornered. I think that the limey bastards in that blighted, shitty little island are the most likely to do something really dumb and kick off the next phase of WWIII.

When propaganda says that in Avdiivka we destroy the enemy 1 to 5, then it is worth turning on basic critical thinking in order to understand the opposite situation and the huge losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The Russian army uses ten times more artillery and drones than us, they have hundreds of aerial bombs, the use of which destroys a defensive position at zero!
Ukrainian military publics call Russian KABs one of the main factors in the advancement of the Russian Federation in Avdeevka.
About 250 KABs, as well as thousands of shells and hundreds of FPV drones, were dropped across the city and region in 2.5 days.
Ukrainian military officer and drone specialist Sergei “Flash” Beskrestnov writes that “KABs don’t care what assault unit you’re from or whether you’ve completed the MTR Q course.”
He says that these 500 kg bombs “literally leveled us to the ground.”
“And direct hits are not the whole problem, their explosion causes severe concussions and each arrival is tens and hundreds of 300,” writes Flash.
The Avdiivka meat grinder became the biggest miscalculation of the new Commander-in-Chief, who promised Zelensky to keep the city in a tactical encirclement.

A day later, the Armed Forces of Ukraine recognized the retreat from the Zenit fortified area south of Avdiivka.
▪️”After many months of confrontation, the command of the OSUV decided to withdraw from the Zenit position to the southeastern outskirts of Avdiivka. The decision to withdraw was made to preserve personnel and improve the operational situation,” General Tarnavsky said.
▪️Traditionally, he justifies himself by saying that tactically taking these positions does not provide Russia with a strategic advantage and does not change the situation in this area.
▪️”Now the regrouping of troops, replenishment of supplies and the arrangement of units in new positions continues. There is a planned strengthening of the units,” Tarnavsky said.

Well, well, well, what do we have here.
I talked about precisely this for months, and was called a war mongering troll. Now people are gradually starting to understand.
Now on a more serious note, the UK can be dealt with without any of that fancy space stuff, that is correct.
But that doesn’t eliminate the need to be able to deal with the US. Presumably in the Kremlin they have a better grasp of what can be expected from the US in the future than us mere mortals here do, which is why all of these first strike systems have been reactivated since the early 2000s. Because all of Putin’s 2018 crop are first strike systems, and so are the space gadgets we are discussing today, despite the official rhetoric about the goal being reestablishing deterrence. That might be the goal, but the capability is much more aggressive. These things weren’t strictly necessary previously — the existing ICBMs and SLBMs were a sufficient deterrent in principle. How do we know that? Well, they are a deterrent to Russia currently — the US triad is in a really decrepit state aside from the SLBMs, and the UK doesn’t even have a triad anymore. But the Kremlin is just taking hits without responding because it is that afraid of starting WWIII.
The problem is that the balance breaks if the other side loses its sanity or is desperate enough and decides to attack anyway. In that case you need first-strike capability that will reduce the second strike to something “tolerable”.
Unfortunately, we are in that situation…

I don’t think you know what “geostationary” means.
But the trick is to disable enemy ISR without causing the Kessler effect, and a bucket of ball bearings in a retrograde orbit colliding with spacecraft would cause problems for centuries unless the orbits were very low.

My recollection is that Navalny as a very sick man when he went to jail, and was not expected to live long. It is unreasonable to expect the prison authorities to tailor their treatment of prisoners according to the ability of the imperialist media to misrepresent matters and the capacity of western public opinion to believe anything it is told about Russians.
The death of any man is an event to be lamented as to Navalny he appears to have entrusted his fate, and his country’s, to enemies, professing to be friends. The Skripals do not appear, in the end, to have been offered a choice.

I’m sure the SBS or equivalent, indeed just about every NATO special forces/military intelligence have got people on the ground – or, with modern secure comms, maybe sat at desks in Plymouth or Hereford. And they have some inventive people, just not as many as they used to have.
But… our ability to project force is very limited these days. Our Navy can’t put a carrier escort group together, even had they a carrier that worked or aircraft to put on one. We stopped making Challenger tanks and have given up making Storm Shadows, most of which have already been donated.
Our industry, our steel and oil refineries, are owned by India and China, our nuclear power by France. The list of things we no longer make (but used to) is vast.
The only possible wunderwaffen breakthrough is the recent successful trial of an anti-drone laser system, which has the potential to reverse the current “£5m missile to destroy £5k drone” paradigm. But knowing the UK, the Chinese will probably be selling them to Russia within a couple of years!

What seems as an advantage for Russia – happens in a quick succession, after the long slug and creep.
Avdeyevka is liberated, with a few smaller strategic strongholds to be gone next – Chasov Yar, New York, Pobeda, Seversk, Belogorovka, all the way to Red Liman – this all goes away from Ukraine. Also, all the Ukrainian gains from the mega-offensive, the whole 10 km x 7 km.
Navaly, the Russian CIA/neo-Nazi died today from a blood clot, apparently. Very good for RF, bad for the USA/EU idiots that sponsored him. And all that on the day when Muenchen NATO conference starts.
Also, the babbling on the nukes in space and such nonsense.
Every long term sat has a small rector powering it, in a combo with solar. In 60s Soviets tried all that nukes in space thing and realised that it is ineffective, expensive, and stupid.
What the West is scared of are the engineering drones that the last few generations of Russian RosCo are equipped with. Those drones are able to basically drag enemy sats out of orbit. But that is the secondary purpose. The primary idea was to enable automatic repairs in orbit.
It is the USA that needed a certain orbit with their ideas of Tungsten rods and such idiocies. Those orbits were denied first by Chinese, and then by Russians by blowing the old sats from the ground by missiles.
So, the West trying to sell the panic about, is a yet another stupid tale. Do not fall for it, a one bit.
Worrying move is the comeback of 101st Airborne in Romania and around Izmail south of Odessa Oblast. I do not know precisely what is the number of troops there, but I also do not get really the purpose.
Probably to help and organize the Ukrainian refugee and troops influx. But it could be a sinister intent, too.
The way I see the development, the NATO ISR is going to be aimed at now, as the new TBF commander has been known on requesting this a year ago.
It is very clear that Crimea and Sevastopol are in danger, as long as everything south of Odessa is under NATO/Ukrainian control.

MAKK @219: “What do you think you can “catch and hold” at a delta V of 20km/s ?”
Yeah, not happening unless your interceptor is disposable. Most of that kinetic energy will get turned to heat at the moment of impact, and that will be a lot of heat. Enough heat to “energetically disassemble” (explode) your spacecraft, assuming your interceptor is bigger than a mosquito. Even a mosquito at that speed would apply some hurt to an armored satellite if it had just finished a meal.
Any sort of contact between spacecraft with that kind of ∆V will result in a huge mess that will wreck everything even in nearby orbits, not just the original orbits the spacecraft were in.
This is why the Russians and Chinese developed robot space tug drones that can gently push satellites out of orbit, and why the US uses lasers that just make little holes in the targets without exploding them.
Trust me on this, the technology for a drone satellite to creep up on another spacecraft at low enough speed not to cause a spectacular spray of debris is impressive enough. Sure, Soyuz, Progress, and crew Dragon spacecraft do that with the International Space Station all the time, but you gotta keep in mind the ISS wants to be caught by those spacecraft. The ISS has systems that help guide the spacecraft to the right location. Your typical military or dual use satellite that a drone might be targeting will not make itself an easy target, and might even have some stealth features. Cozying up to one of those to have your way with it is quite the feat.

“The transformation has put defence at the centre of Russia’s economy. Putin claimed this month that 520,000 new jobs had been created in the military-industrial complex, which now employs an estimated 3.5 million Russians, or 2.5% of the population. Machinists and welders in Russian factories producing war equipment are now making more money than many white-collar managers and lawyers, according to a Moscow Times analysis of Russian labour data in November.”

What is wrong with causing the Kessler effect if it brings peace?
Posted by: too scents | Feb 16 2024 13:23 utc | 230

That’s the thing, it won’t.
Remember that the Cuban missile crisis was preceded by the shooting down of the U-2. What was the U-2 doing over Soviet airspace? Well, there were no satellites, so that was the only way to map out Russian military installations.
Then satellites appeared and there was no longer any need for the U-2s.
And that was in fact stabilizing — because if both sides are watching each other all the time, that removes a lot of the uncertainty that creates instability. The less paranoia about what the other side is doing, the better for humanity.
The catch is that satellites are stabilizing as long as all they’re doing is watching from the sky.
The moment you put nukes into space, they become the exact opposite — nothing is more destabilizing than that, because it takes about a minute for nukes to hit Moscow or DC if launched from an overflying low-earth orbit satellite. Thus the Outer Space Treaty being one of the very first arms control agreements passed back in the 1960s.
But if you go for Kesslerization to make something like that impossible, you are back to the situation when there was no eye in the sky. And that is very destabilizing, and unlikely to bring peace.

From Public Opinion by Walter Lippmann

THERE is another reason, besides economy of effort, why we so often
hold to our stereotypes when we might pursue a more disinterested
vision. The systems of stereotypes may be the core of our personal
tradition, the defenses of our position in society.
They are an ordered, more or less consistent picture of the world, to
which our habits, our tastes, our capacities, our comforts and our
hopes have adjusted themselves. They may not be a complete picture of
the world, but they are a picture of a possible world to which we are
adapted. In that world people and things have their well-known places,
and do certain expected things. We feel at home there. We fit in. We
are members. We know the way around. There we find the charm of the
familiar, the normal, the dependable; its grooves and shapes are where
we are accustomed to find them. And though we have abandoned much that
might have tempted us before we creased ourselves into that mould,
once we are firmly in, it fits as snugly as an old shoe.
No wonder, then, that any disturbance of the stereotypes seems like an
attack upon the foundations of the universe. It is an attack upon the
foundations of _our_ universe, and, where big things are at
stake, we do not readily admit that there is any distinction between
our universe and the universe. A world which turns out to be one in
which those we honor are unworthy, and those we despise are noble, is
nerve-racking. There is anarchy if our order of precedence is not the
only possible one. For if the meek should indeed inherit the earth, if
the first should be last, if those who are without sin alone may cast
a stone, if to Caesar you render only the things that are Caesar’s,
then the foundations of self-respect would be shaken for those who
have arranged their lives as if these maxims were not true. A pattern
of stereotypes is not neutral. It is not merely a way of substituting
order for the great blooming, buzzing confusion of reality. It is not
merely a short cut. It is all these things and something more. It is
the guarantee of our self-respect; it is the projection upon the world
of our own sense of our own value, our own position and our own
rights. The stereotypes are, therefore, highly charged with the
feelings that are attached to them. They are the fortress of our
tradition, and behind its defenses we can continue to feel ourselves
safe in the position we occupy.

Posted by: shаdοwbanned | Feb 16 2024 14:19 utc | 251
That’s the wrong way round. The satellites were introduced because of the U2 shoot-down of Gary Powers. U2s were no longer reliable sources of intelligence. In any case U2 fly-paths were very random. They only covered a limited area. I’ve been looking at U2 declassified imagery. Then the CORONA series satellites were rapidly introduced, where they put two 70mm cinema cameras in a satellite to produce 3D plottable imagery, i.e. used commercially available equipment to get the project working in a year after Powers was shot down in 1962.

Russia has an advantage in the Zircon missile that is greatly reduced by the loss of satellites used to track NATO ships. You remove that and you are down to AEW and submarine assets to get your targeting data for long range shots and Russian AEW is restricted in where it can operate from.

No. This is not validation of your previous nuclear strike advocacy. Unimperator has summarised a slightly oddball almost childish article on topwar.ru. No surprise that you like it.
https://en.topwar.ru/235883-64-giperzvukovye-rakety-cirkon-s-jadernoj-boevoj-chastju-mogut-navsegda-zakryt-proekt-velikobritanija.html
There are many obvious and unasked questions in this article. Morally the U.K. elites and government could do with being taken down a peg or two. This is currently being achieved economically. The U.K. population has never been so ignored and screwed financially in the past 70 years. This is a result of a combination of elite class asset stripping via neoliberal economic policy and incompetent foreign policy. There is no requirement for an aggressive military strike on the already sinking U.K. Strategically what sense would it make attacking an island that poses no direct strategic threat but would elicit an article 5 NATO response? These nuclear strike fantasies on the U.K. are nonsense, just as idiot western hawk plans to attack and regime change Russia are absolute nonsense. The article on top war was as much about U.K. unreadiness. Now that I don’t doubt. If there is no profit motive, then nothing gets done. But just because a state is incompetent or unready, that’s not a justification for a nuclear attack, which of course would produce a response likely to kill hundreds of millions around the world and make areas uninhabitable.
Your hypocrisy shadow**** is unparalleled. You cry crocodile tears for a handful of people killed in Belgorod by terrorist actions and complain about the criminal negligence of the pandemic response killing millions, while constantly arguing in favour of nuclear strike which would kill scores of millions and be the most destructive action in the history of mankind. And here are the people that you advocate murdering in their scores of millions:
https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGeSfMdx4/
Fuck your spamming of these threads. When it comes to war and weapons, the imperialists still have the whip hand, and it’s the ruling elites who will launch this destruction if they think they can escape to their luxury bunkers. Always to the detriment of the masses of ordinary people. Usually the poorest. Your spam and your faux concern for Russia serves the elites interests but it does so very poorly as inspired by hate, you’re so transparently inconsistent.

What a delightful read this morning of this final page. Perhaps b has had time for some housecleaning, or perhaps trolls have turned into truells – I sailed through, bottom to top, too many to thank individually – but such good informative posts!!!
Yes, people do die, even the headline-making,seemingly invincible, but there it is. Good and bad together, for a reckoning the nature of which we know not; but good fortune to them all in the end, whatever hardships they may have to endure before they get there, poor souls.
This was the lifting of many burdens, from satellites to garrisoned hilltops. I loved particularly “Germany will support an independent Ukraine” and the mysteriously still operating defunct airline. Good luck, Germany!

I actually advocate for taking out the elites, not for megaton strikes on cities.
The problem is that taking out the elites still involves nukes — it’s way too many castles and mansions and private islands, and you can’t afford to send multiple 500-kg warheads on each to ensure destruction.
And you need to also make sure there is no second strike, which means preemptive counter force trikes.
And then you need to also make sure that there will be no demands for retaliation even after you’ve done all that, so you may end up, despite all your good intentions, having to fully wipe out a few countries, with all their population, then take over the land.
Some of them do deserve it though, because the rabid Russophobes lusting for blood are an overwhelming majority there.

They did that at least once. A couple of druggie Soviet conscripts in Afghanistan went on a “smack-run” to Pakistan, they naturally got taken by CIA etc funded jihadis.
Were “detoxed & encouraged” to “defect to the UK” in this case, for use as propaganda assets. But they hated living (smackless) in London, so they managed to defect back to the U.S.S.R.
The Western press said they got promptly executed, but then the Soviets after waiting a bit produced them alive & well.
Claiming they got kidnapped by terrorists whilst on patrol then tortured & threatened into a false defection.

When their US friends shout, they foam at the mouth. But I think this is how the true German journalist feels most comfortable:
ON THE DEATH OF ALEXEI NAVALNYJ:Martyr for Good
• A COMMENT BY KERSTIN HOLM
• -UPDATED ON 02/16/2024-7:31 p.m
Alexei Navalnyj was murdered in prison, leading commentators agree. He himself knew that one cannot serve good without sacrificing himself.
Alexei Navalnyj was murdered in custody. This is as clear to the Russian exiled author Anna Narinskaya as it is to all leading commentators. This murder was carried out consistently by the Putin regime, most recently through prison conditions that amounted to torture: constant additional punishments through solitary confinement, refusal of medical treatment, although the liberal public in Russia and the West had hoped until the end that Putin would try to exchange Navalny. (Google trans)
