I think you identify a key determinant since the 15th century: an unassailable belief in the supremacy of the European tradition—which boils down to thinking you are better than anyone else. To be sure, it is a necessary component of successful empire (exceptionalism, manifest destiny, etc), but it doesn’t cope well with dissonance. In spite of what some here might think of me, my time teaching in a university for 30 years has beaten out of me any belief in one’s own exceptionalism. There’s always someone cleverer, better read, brighter and more insightful—and younger. Most of the time they’re my students. Russia and China are teaching the USA that lesson as we speak.

It just amazes me that 2/3rds of the western industrialized world acknowledges that the world will end because of their rampant consumerism……
Posted by: UWDude | Feb 18 2024 20:08 utc | 24
Actually they don’t, Maybe barely 1 % think that is possible and likely unless the entire system is upended to a new paradigm entirely where greed and profit no long rule this world.
Some of the most extreme deluded people in the world are “pro climate action” pushing for the net zero COP actions to reduce emissions which in fact (besides being bs and unable to achieve the stated goals) double down on a growing industrialized western society and expanding that to the entire world as well.
The issues over climate change are far larger than merely a denier group who think it bs, and a ‘green environmentalist’ group pushing for carbon taxes, everything going electrical, and EVs and RE & battery projects and BECCS and Carbon dioxide removal as if it’ll fix everything.
All that is as delusional as those who believe it’s a grand ‘Greening’ opportunity to open up massive agriculture in the Siberia steps and Alaska and Greenland ….. it’s all laughable. No, it’s insane and it’s just plain ignorant an stupid!
When in regard to climate change, including many of the climate scientists themselves, imho well over 95% of people in the west (that’s 900 million at least) are completely delusional and bat shit crazy.
We’re totally fucked already. Nothing is going to stop the long series of catastrophes that are already embedded in the world and the underlying economic systems which are driving us to endless destruction for decades and centuries to come.
So enjoy the haughty mind games while they last. 🙂
The science is VERY clear even if most of the celebrity climate scientists can’t even face it or admit it publicly.

The insidious undermining of religious freedom in Hong Kong’,

a new report outlining the increasing threats to religious freedom in Hong Kong was launched last week at the European Parliament in Brussels. Titled “Sell Out My Soul”: The Impending Threats to Freedom of Religion or Belief in Hong Kong” will be presented at three events — in Washington, DC, this week, in the Parliament of Canada in Ottawa next week, and in the UK Houses of Parliament on Nov. 30.

the CCP has always been inherently hostile to religion and has sought at various stages since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 to eradicate, suppress, control, or co-opt religion

Humanity is facing multiple crises at once. If we tackle them one by one we’re at risk of just playing whack-a-mole, plastering over the symptoms rather than addressing the meta level causes of the disease. In this video I argue that we need to seek solutions to the metacrisis.
These underlying dynamics are often the deeper reason why we find it so hard to solve the various problems our societies are confronting. The collapse in our collective sensemaking is not helping this either.
Firstly there’s the problem of multi-polar traps or Molochian Dynamics [Moloch/Mammon]; these are the situations when everyone agrees that there is a global problem but the most rational local decision for individual people or companies is the one that actually contributes further to that Global problem even more, making it all the more entrenched and far worse.
Seeking solutions to the Metacrisis – Ha! Good luck finding them.

Just a spot of turbulence. the worlds been through it many times before.
Just a thought as I haven’t seen anything on it. CO2 makes up something like 0.02 to 0.04% of the atmosphere. Oxygen and nitrogen make up 98%. What effect on temperature does oxygen and nitrogen have?
The amount of water vapor and water droplets in the air constantly vary. What effect do they have?
Bare, especially dark ground can get very hot and noticeably heats the air. Ground covered in vegetation does not have that effect or to a far lesser extent.
CO2 apears to be like heroin. People get hooked on it.

Well, i dont watch youtube, but from your writings, i pretty much agree.
There is cataclysmic failure coming on every front of humanity.
And it has been said before, through all ages, but this time I think it actually is different because the greatest technological advance of our age is related to our evolutionary definer; our brains.
Perhaps there will be a deus ex machina, (literally god from the machine), and AI will solve all our problems. I dont know.
I am not a minimalist because i care about the environment, (though I do, greatly), nor because I care about the direction of humanity, (I do, greatly), nor because I care about about money, (I do, greatly)….
Its because all of life’s consumerist pleasures bring me NO JOY whatsoever. I do not like anything. My last material posession I loved was a Lego set, 30 odd years ago. I’ve tried to understand, I’ve bought nice things, and I just felt… Nothing.
I don’t like stress, I dont like big house. So I simplified, and Ive never been happier.
I do however, (or used to, until I learned to gamedev), like playing computer games.
So, perhaps, AI will make Virtual Reality so addictive, that people will simply cease wanting material things, and instead will live lives plugged into a matrix of fantasy, leaving food, water, and shelter, even procreation, to a central AI system.
It may sound horrifying to old timers, but to me, I would be fine with that, and it could conceivably actually stop the destruction of the planet.
If you look around you, we are already halfway there. Been to a bar lately, been anywhere lately? Where are peoples minds and faces? What are they focused on?
However, all that said, I still think man made global warming is bs. Maybe 1or2% is from humanity’s CO2.
I think trying to solve it, is… Interesting, as long as it does not go overboard, like, darkening the sky woth aerosols, as Bill Gates and others have proposed.
Then you get into making a situation worse trying to solve a problem.

Thanks, Patroklos – the college I attended was a small one and the ratio of professors to students meant we were one ‘student body’. Here it is somewhat similar, we get to know one another as those who have an interest stick around. I’ve learned so much here, nost of all that it isn’t just college learning that makes the world go around.
I think what I most respected Carlson for was the moment in a recent interview when he said that we need to say more often that we don’t know. Sometimes our arguments here bring home that point to me about myself. I don’t know who is right about global warming or about how the economy should be. There is always an opposiing argument or someone better informed.
Yes, isn’t it really special to have those two countries as openly available to us as now they are? Not just in books or even films — as very different civilization/states as Putin described. And there are people like that everywhere. Gaza could be one. Novorussyia could be one. The whole world could be. As b said, listen to them!
Not to us. Not to our leaders. We have a long, long way to go, to get back to what we used to be. Which brings me back to:

No, you wouldn’t, Tom. At least in the US you wouldn’t. Just backtrack to when those I’ve bolded in your statement were not allowed to become such monsters as they are today. The Constitution is of the people by the people for the people and those are not people!

thx for your response.
a tip on yt videos to make it efficient.
99% of yt info/politics etc videos are text based anyway.
turn off the sound or down to low
turn on the subtitles that run at the bottom of the screen
then go to options and change the speed setting to x1.5 or x 2 and read the subtitles instead.
if switch to full screen it’s easier to read
Alternatively …. show more info, scroll down the Transcripts button, and then copy paste the transcript into a text doc and read it.

Socrates identified it well when he maintained that the person who grasps their own ignorance has attained an important level of wisdom. In my 20s I was an arrogant doctoral student. Life bashed me up a bit, then my academic career hit the doldrums. I got back on track in my 40s, but only after wising up a bit and accepting my limitations. As I kick on into later middle age the vastness of what I don’t know (but would love the time to get to know) stretches out before me. The gods love to knock over our sandcastles. It would be nice if the West collectively accepted this and learned some humility. I mean, as Epicurus pointed out, all we need is a garden, a place to stay, maybe a few books and the conversation of good friends. Anything more is hubris.

Read alongside our current context I highly recommend Sallust’s Bellum Jugurthinum (The War Against Jugurtha). Sallust (G. Sallustius Crispus) was one of Julius Caesar’s men who went on to extort the province of Africa Proconsularis as governor. Sallust retired with the loot to build lavish gardens and write history in the late 40s BCE. He was terse stylist who tried to offer as Thucydidean an account of the republic’s contradictions as he could, and used the war against Jugurtha as a case-study in elite profligacy and corruption. It’s a superb and short read. He’s my favourite Roman historian (then Tacitus, Livy, and Ammianus).

Thanks for your posts this thread.
I relate to that and can assure you the vastness only increases. About age 40 I began to get curious. Now,
almost 40 years later, curiosity is what wakes and sustains me. But yeah, not enough time. Even with the short nights of elder years I end each day with more unknowns that when the day began, despite sucking up info all the while. It can seem a paradox but I’ve found it important to accept that. Relish it in fact.
What to ask. That is the question.

Well, i dont read books anymore. They dont have links, you know? I certainly do not read academic books, I got really sick of the cadence of them.
So I just do full wikipedia link travel-throughs on everything. I am at about 75 BC right now.
I am designing a game, fantasy strategy game, and I just want to learn some other ways of looking at life back then… ..like how it was an honor to pay for a trireme, and gained benefactors fame, and then gradually became a burden. Life was so much different back then, and wealth itself had different meaning.
I am also interested in Gods and how they were treated, still finding that a tad difficult. I mean, I am really curious how strong devotion and belief in Gods were, although I suspect it may be unknown.

2 cents worth — no one believed int eh gods any ore than they do today. Instead of word for an ideal like Truth they created a god that represented it. No different than a tarot card for death or fortune. The ‘gods’ were ideals and experiences and good bad fortune, life experiences and ethical standard, and down right despicable human behavior too.
All the old religions, and I mean all of them, from every tradition and region were there best representation for Human Psychology and the Trials of Life they could come up with at the time … all personified and communicated into mythological narratives. No one really belied Zeus was real… he was an imaginary Icon. Same with all of them.
eg greek women dedicated to dionysis … It could be via art, devotion, sacrifice, offering yourself through drug use, dance, music, ecstatic practice – etc. Dionysos is a god that comes …. were probably not much different from going to rave party today or a LSD house in the 60s except they got drunk stoned and danced inside a temple instead.
Little has changed, the more things change the more they stay the same. Now we worship Musk, Theil, or Michael Mann and Blackrock or Trump or Putin or XI or Biden instead … then do all this ritual shit on Twitter instead.
But hey, don’t believe me, I’m no Cult Guru. 🙂

I kind of am, as I was raised in a cult. And they certainly believed god was real, as did I as a child.
I know plenty of Christians now that believe God and the bible are very real, including family members.
Knowing what I felt as a child, I know it is possible to absolutely believe God is real… …and this is in a modern world.
So, I am curious how real the people in a world of scientific mystery thought of their Gods. From what I read, it did seem more like superstitious belief, as opposed to devotional belief one can observe in Christians, as in, i dont think there was a concept of heaven or hell, or even a concept of angering gods, but more a concept of understanding the messages of Gods, as I have read quite a bit about reading omens and such.

I’m sorry to have expressed myself in unclear terms in my post @79. What I wanted to say is that we don’t find it easy to embrace an idea that is also promoted by the left/green parties in the West, given that those same parties are at the forefront of warmongering and Russia haters.
Reducing CO2 and CH4 emissions is indeed crucial, and carbon taxes are an obvious way of achieving this. We need to reduce usage of private cars, but not the replacement of the whole existing fleet of cars by electric cars, along with all the batteries and loading infrastructure required. We need to further invest in wind and solar power, and replace fossil aircraft fuel by synthetic fuel, using “green” hydrogen and CO2 as input to the chemical synthesis.
Most of all, however, do we need to fight deforestation like in Brazil and Indonesia. Energy crops like oil palms should be completely avoided, as they create an incentive for clearing large areas of native forest. We should not, like the Germans, demonize nuclear power while it may still be needed as a bridge technology until more solar power becomes available. As the polls show, the general public understands this argument easily, much unlike members of the Green party.

I think it’s a wise idea to keep in mind that the institutions which are telling us that “Israel knew!” are known liars.

The problem is that the Israeli government, including Netanyahu himself, denies and always denied that Israel knew anything. I’ll try to be clear: the biggest known pathological liars of the pack are in the camp “Israel was totally taken by surprise”.
There are reports that Egyptian intelligence warned Israeli officers, that the Israeli agents inside Gaza warned their higher levels, that the Israeli border guards wrote reports about the unusual high activity by Hamas, etc.
Nonetheless, one of the most paranoid government ever “was totally taken by surprise”, according to them.

@Patroklos | Feb 18 2024 20:53 utc | 41

Yes, as a historian, when I have to explain an event and the choice is between deep-state 5D-chess-playing lever-pulling illuminati, or simply sheer incompetence, I’ll take the latter every day and twice on Sundays.

Then you’d probably be wrong seven days a week (and twice on Sunday). The problem here is thinking, and then teaching others, that someone needs a detailed masterplan to pursue a successful conspiracy. It does not work that way. They simply need to plant their operatives, to infiltrate, to have sleeping cells, informants, and then simply seize the moment. If you think that Israel financed and favoured politically Hamas in the 1980s, because they already knew that on October 7th 2024 they were to launch their masterplan, you are crazy. But if you think that Israel was so incompetent up to October 7th 23:59, and then, since October 8th 00:00, so efficient in pursuing their long-desired plan of ethnic cleansing Gaza, you are gullible.
Not to mention that Israel has a long history of false flags and conspiracies from Operation Susannah to the FLLE.

On Friday last, the Russian language edition of the German state medium Deutsche Welle (DW) published a report of German and Polish government plans for the expropriation of PCK, the Rosneft crude oil refinery at Schwedt in northern Germany, and the Rosneft network of operating assets in Germany, Poland, and Austria.
The Kremlin spokesman has announced: “This is nothing else than the expropriation of someone else’s property. These are steps that undermine the economic and legal foundations of European states, these are steps that absolutely devalue the investment attractiveness of these countries and have very deep consequences for those who make such decisions. We do not exclude anything to protect our interests and to counter the illegal steps that we are talking about.” Rosneft is already suing in Germany’s Constitutional Court against the BNA trustee management scheme.
The value of the Rosneft assets proposed for seizure is about $7 billion. The German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on February 9 that Rosneft chief executive Igor Sechin had sent a formal letter proposing that the German government buy Rosneft out at the market price. Habeck’s ministry has denied receiving such a letter.

On the two videos, Kujat and Baud, linked by b (both rather strangely listed under the topic Germany, although both were about the Ukraine war and the Baud video was to a great extent about France).
The Kujat speech was really rather boring, and for the most part rather lacking in insight – with the odd exception cropping up now and then. What was rather strange was the body language of the other three people on stage, who for some reason considered fit not to make any attempt whatsoever to hide their extreme feelings of boredom!
The Baud interview however was on another level entirely – an impressively deep and intellectually penetrating analysis by Baud of many interesting factes. I thoroughly recommend taking the time to watch it.

Destabilization. To borrow from the letter signed by 51 CIA agents interfering with a US Presidential election – “has the classic earmarks of a CIA destabilization operation.”

EU top Nazi Ursula von die Leichen (name refers to Gaza) wants to honour her Nazi SS grandfather (SS investigator Joachim von der Leyen) by founding an SS Brigade in the EU Commission. Sounds like a good election manifesto to me (that is, when you consider who would be supposed to ‘elect’ her). A substantial proportion of today’s top politicos throughout Europe (not just Germany and the Baltics) are direct 3rd generation Nazis whose grandfathers were SS officers or dedicated supporters of the Nazi Party of the Third Reich. It seems crystal clear to me that the only reason they are in power today is because they were put there specifically as Nazis.

A little off topic perhaps, but I’m hearing a lot about how Wikileaks were responsible for outing gay people in Saudi Arabia and putting peoples’ lives at risk by releasing other personal information in a reckless and irresponsible way. Obviously this is being said to discredit Assange in the run up to the extradition hearings, but does anyone know if there’s any truth behind this? I always thought Assange was very diligent when it came to screening the material that Wikileaks released to mitigate this kind of damage.

Posted by: grunzt | Feb 19 2024 11:04 utc | 127
Let’s be clear, though- reduced atmospheric CO2 contributes to deforestation. At some point, all other factors being equal, the process of bio-sequestration will reduced the amount of atmospheric CO2 below the level required to keeps plants- any plants- alive. This has come close to happening before, but the biosphere was rescued by vulcanism. I don’t think that we can count on that in a time frame relevant to human life. Our de-sequestration of ancient carbon ought not to be driven entirely by ‘energy needs,’ but it is a key factor in any reasonable proposal for ‘managing’ global climate. In that context, the fact that our current large-scale creation of atmospheric CO2 is very likely ALREADY staving off the next plunge to a glacial maximum needs to be factored in. It seems unlikely that anthropogenic global warming can fully disrupt the glacial cycle in the time frame of the glacial maximum that is already overdue, but it might buy us some time to prepare for a civilized life when the temperature falls. Precipitating that fall now is simply stupid- the damage to human civilization of even ten degrees more average heat is nothing compared to glaciers covering the northern hemisphere.
I think that when the current knowledge base on the issues of real climate change penetrate the politically driven hysteria, there will be a massive return to coals, and in the north polar latitudes they won’t even install scrubbers, the decrease of albedo via carbon dust on the snow and ice will help moderate the freezing.
The whole organization of global society must evolve if civilization is to survive, and the western capitalist economic model must be destroyed before that can happen. Thus, if you want real defense against the impacts of climate change, your priority should be fighting imperialism. Nothing else can save you.
It wouldn’t hurt if you made a serious effort to find out what it is you really need to save yourself from along the way. I promise you, atmospheric CO2 drought is the real world-killer. Everything else can be managed.

Posted by: SG | Feb 19 2024 14:01 utc | 132
Agree. I would add that the argument of incompetence is a shield for the conspirators, and it’s a narrative their minions actively push- for instance, Larry Johnson, ‘Ex-CIA analyst’ harped on poor training protocols of the IDF for weeks after Oct7.
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
― Sun Tzu, The Art of War
The ruling powers of the west do everything they can to prevent the people they oppress from knowing themselves, and from knowing who their enemies even are. Feigning incompetence is a deception. The faces put before the public often are incompetent, but they are not the planners and decision makers. The active component of the ruling class is really quite clever- hardly anyone, even here, is able to see that the war in Ukraine was never a war against Russia, it was and is a war against Europe, driven by all the factors that drove the previous two wars in Europe. The core strategists in the US are winning THEIR war handily, the SMO in Ukraine is just a tool for the complete subjugation of Western Europe. Perhaps one or two European leaders have been in on the plan, and it suits their greed to implement it, but most of them are still unable to figure it out, let alone the public in the west, or even in this bar.
If you follow the economics closely since 2008, it is really rather obvious in hindsight that this was the inception of the plan that led to the SMO. The twin blows of the Maidan and the trashing of the Iran nuke deal were a pincer movement to cut off EU from cheap oil, deindustrialize it, eliminate EU as an economic competitor and shift high-tech manufacturing to the US. Iran nuke deal could have helped the EU countries stabilize after 2008, but the loss of a new energy source, new markets for the EU manufacturing base (EU itself was saturated, witness Greece, Portugal, etc), and massive infrastructure projects forced ECB into American-style QE. Not having the petrodollar, this was suicidal, and made the EU economies more and more vulnerable to financial attack- such as that conducted by the US via the sanctions war ‘against Russia’ but really against Europe. Purely from open source, mostly MSM reports, I figured this out ten days after Trump killed the Iran nuke deal, a deal, btw, that is exactly the kind of deal Trump loves- but higher powers did not. What on earth was the point of killing the deal? What did the US have to gain? First answer- the continuing instability of EU economy. Then start looking around at other initiatives and the Maidan jumps out- a pet nazi regime perched on the energy route from Russia to the west…
This is not stupidity, it’s not incompetence, it’s a very clever strategy to maximize benefits to the core US financial class while pushing off as many of the ultimate costs of the 2008 financial crisis onto others, particularly Europe. As long as people insist on see the PTB as incompetent, they will be unable to penetrate the haze and will make terrible predictions, support their own oppressors, and fight their own allies. Grow up. These bastards are smart, well educated, and better informed than the rest of us. If you want to oppose them, you have to be smarter, and so far I don’t see much of that in the western opposition to any of the crimes of the PTB.

That has been my thought for some time. very much in agreement with most of your comment.
Ice cores show average temps can rise another 4 degrees and still be within the holocene. It can peak at another 10 degrees and be no worse than previews intergalactic.
From the ice cores, the holocene is a historical oddity. Far more stable warm temp conditions than any time in the past. possibly the cause of the rise of technology, yet Göbekli Tepe was built in the midst of the younger dryas according to current dating.
What caused the current interglacial to plateau well below below the peak of past interglacial that that simple rose sharply to peak much higher then drop off just as sharply into the next glacial? That is a major question to be answered before we drop to our knees and pray to the CO2 god.

Assange was busy removing such details, and more, prior to Wikileaks’ intended data release when Harding the UK spook and Guardian “journalist” (Wikileaks having been stupid enough to associate with the that publication) deliberately revealed the password which made *all* the data accessible to others.
For which the fanatically anti-Russian liar Harding was not even arrested — but Assange was wrongly imprisoned for that data release largely thanks to the perverted legal efforts of Starmer (now likely to be the next UK PM) the Zionist (and now Jewish) Washington/Neocon puppet — so conclusions can safely be drawn.

I mentioned something to Mark2 yesterday on how survivors of terrible events were able to carry – rebuild, marry, raise children ect.
But after most of my life reading the history of war and sometimes other disasters, it is especial to think objectively rather than carry on in apathy or run screaming in terror.
People that join a cult can no longer think objectively. Group think in often/mostly fictional stuff.
Man made climate change is a very recent phenomenon that arose in the west. Part and parcel of this is preventing third world countries, where we obtain dirt cheap goods, from developing.
I think it is not good to change the gas mix of the atmosphere so this should be minimised, but at the same time, the constant cycles of glacials and intereglacials stretching back 100’s of thousands, millions of years is a far larger threat the inevitably of which we should be prepared for.

@ Honzo and SG have misunderstood what I meant in a rather myopic way, thinking that if I default to incompetence as an explanation for what look like fuck-ups then it precludes other explanations. I’m not going to bother with the more subtle version, suffice it to say that context and history are complicated and not reducible to the universalism of a bourgeois worldview in which causation is sought in rational action.

My pa was a fundy evangelical preacher who drifted into Pentecostalism late in his career,
preaching things like speaking in tongues, healing, knowledge etc. At this
stage of my life I consider my upbringing as one of being in a cult even though I was gone
by the time his ‘gifts of the spirit’ arrived.
Posted by: waynorinorway | Feb 19 2024 11:22 utc | 130
The cult was pentacostal. We were not allowed to watch tv, listen to radio, (worldly music), and women had to dress like it was the 1850s. Furthermore, big life decisions (buying car, house, marriage, divorce) had to get permission from God via the headquarters.
It also pretty much claimed to be the one true christianity. When people left the cult, you never saw them again, as they had “backslidden”, “known the word, and rejected it”, which was like, double sin.
It is quite large now, having spread to Mexico and Africa.

Communist China is not “anti-religion”, China, is “anti-Christian”, because of the Tai Ping rebellion, possibly the bloodiest war in human history, surpassing even WwIi by some estimates, as well as the history of jesuit meddling.
It is why many western countries can easily demonize China, because their Christian populaces eat up that China supresses Christians.
Of course, bot the Tai Ping, and Falun Gong, are nothing like Western Christianity, in that funny way Chinese do western things. Most Christians in the west would declare falun gong as beresy, or worse, demonic twisting of christianity, if they knew the actual beliefs and practices of falun gong, but since they claim to be Christian, the parishoners hearing about evil communist suppression of christians, dont really care about the details.
By the way, the “persecution of christians” is a very common theme in churches, full of anecdotes from around the world, usually wildly distorted, but always with a patriotic, “thank God we live in the USA”, and one of the reason, christians, another “religion of peace” always seem to be the most eager for american napalm campaigns abroad.

This comes when US Australia are going all out to keep pacific islands from turning to China and keeping Chinese/Chinese built infrastructure out. Wasn’t hard to guess the origins of the sudden influx of weapons. Reading down I find this.

However, You guys are shouting past each other. In general and within common ground you believe the same things. It’s obvious. There’s but a cigarette paper between your views.
The problem is ” the others ” instead of claiming to be innocent for the people, by the people crap. Have to surely realise they are anything but innocent. One look at their voting record will prove that.
But you won’t get them to admit that not in social media. No looking in the mirror will occur. Questioning how they voted in the past will not happen. Today it someone else’s fault they are the innocent.
Hence, the shouting past each other when you just about agree on everything.

To your point, I do think we are differing more than a mere cigarette paper, because I do still believe that the Israelis – small compartmentalized segments or factions – perhaps a few decision making centers – intentionally handicapped the preparedness and slow walked, then went ballistic in the response on Oct. 7.

Trying to get people to admit they voted for the one party nation state that caused the problems that caused the mass immigration in the first place.
Is never going to happen. That means a major scrutiny of one’s own voting record. They ain’t ever going to do that as they are probably just about to make the exact same mistakes in November.
To believe them you have to actually believe they are innocent and members of the lower people and not hold any power in the one party nation state.
Eh, no, they voted for the one party nation state time and time again and gave them carte blanche. Anything but innocent.
Once they agree. Yeah sure, we voted for the one party nation state time and time again that caused the problems that created the mass immigration in the first place.
Then everybody is singing from the same hymn sheet afterwards. Until then , it is always going to be someone else’s fault.. Shout past each other.

1) they mostly believe there is no christianity in Eastern Europe, that it was all wiped out by the Soviets in the 1959s, Christians were sent to the gulags, and church had to be held in underground basements in fear that any moment the KGB would kick down their door and send them to prison. I am not even exaggerating how fantastic their delusions are.
They basically see all Orthodox as a darker, creepier, more opulent form of Catholicism, if they even know it exists. My experience is with evangelical, bible believing, born again churches.
I do not know how more “mainstream” churches like Lutheran and Episcopalian are. But my above statement is still quite true with four square pentacostal, a fairly mainstream protestant sect.

Certainly, but my conversation with Nemesis_Calling was a little more nuanced than that. We were talking about vocal support of a bad policy AFTER the elections had taken place. IOW cheering for a needless war (or hypothetically for economic warfare on VZ or Cuba for ex.) and then complaining about the costs to society of said actions after the fact. I was merely making a point that some of the people (not Nemesis, as he has made clear) who are the loudest about the border/migrant crisis are also fully and vociferously cheering for the sanctions on countries which are sending the most migrants, and in numbers never before seen from the respective countries.

Communist China is not “anti-religion”, China, is “anti-Christian”,
..
falun gong, but since they claim to be Christian, the parishoners hearing about evil communist suppression of christians, dont really care about the details.
Posted by: UWDude | Feb 19 2024 19:26 utc | 163
Bullshit. Falun Gong doesn’t claim to be Christian. They would claim to be some kind of Buddhist system of a pure Chinese kind (though it is CIA enabled!). Also China has a historically based suspicion of mass religious movements because of their political consequences. Over a thousand years ago there was an emperor who attempted to kick out/suppress all non Chinese religions – Buddhist, Christian, Muslim. And as an indicator of “keeping an eye on them” consider the decree by another emperor that jews would have a designated family name (6 or so options). A bit of google and “wikipedia travel” will give the details.

I am pretty sure I was under that impression by the impassioned defenses of them by Christian organizations. Not sure where I got the idea they were Christian, and i never bothered to double check!

I’ve seen it, bit coroners do not ask if the deceased was vaccinated, therefore, it is hard to know what is causing them. Maybe vac, may be covid, may be something else, but afaik, they sid only show up after the vaccines started rolling out.

Here’s something interesting when it comes to ‘climate science’
“Earth’s atmosphere contains about 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and 0.9 percent argon. The remaining 0.1 percent consists of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxides, methane, ozone and water vapor. Despite their small quantities, even tiny changes in these atmospheric gases impact the global energy balance and temperature. Water vapor, the most important greenhouse gas, fluctuates with temperature.
Percentage of Water Vapor in Air
The percentage of water vapor in air varies based on temperature. The percent of water vapor in the cold Arctic and Antarctic (and highest Alpine regions) may reach as low as 0.2 percent while the warmest tropical air may contain up to 4 percent water vapor.”
Dust, particulates ect.
In the west, we now have corporate science and political science, the two often or mostly go hand in hand.

Posted by: Patroklos | Feb 19 2024 18:34 utc | 161
You should perhaps say what you mean. You’re not very good at saying what I mean.
I do not deny that there are many layers of incompetence in every human endeavor. However, if we allow ourselves to be satisfied with this explanation when examining events of great moment, we will inevitably miss the underlying truth. People in the bar seem to be fond of attacking others for not crediting Hamas with the intelligence and skill and determination to mount the Oct 7, but not only is that not at all what I have said, it is ironic to hear from the same quarters that all is explained by Israeli incompetence.
The fact is, the west is governed by an active cabal of the financiers- not the ones that work in banks, but the ones that own the assets that are employed by the ones that work in banks. The people are, by and large, neither stupid nor ignorant. Their world view has constraints, of course, but what really constrains their actions is the fundamental nature of finance capitalism. They own a system that is inherently unstable, and demands constant resets and shoring up with other people’s wealth. This leads to adventures which will inevitably fail- but so what? They server their purpose in the meantime, which is to protect and concentrate the power of these elites. However, as Uncle Karl pointed out so long ago, this process is fueled by wealth from outside the system. That is becoming much more difficult to extract, and the system is on the brink of collapse. Short of saying, ‘oh well, it was nice while it lasted’ and retiring to a remote part of New Guinea, they are left with choices that will fail, and now we are in the end cycle in which they will fail faster and faster. Even so, they have a lot of knowledge, and vast experience with this game, and they make clever plans to keep it going a little further- such as the war of the US vs Europe which is going nicely, but hardly anybody, even in Europe, understands is happening.
I think that Netanyahoo understands this, and he took a wild gamble to save his own neck- probably without the knowledge of or against the advice of the CIA. He did it to stay out of jail, to implement the Zionst dream, and to drag the US into actively facilitating his designs, and it’s working. It wasn’t an accident, it wasn’t incompetence, it was deliberate.
In order to implement this plan, Netanyahoo personally nurtured Hamas. Not everyone in Hamas bought into the plan, though- to have power Hamas had to recruit authentic Palestinian patriots willing to fight against Israel. These have shown themselves to be hard to control, so the attack that Netenyahoo wanted on Oct 7 was not the one he got, and now his ass in a sling.
Nutty’s plan was not brilliant, but given his personal situation, it was the only plan going. Hamas- or the part of Hamas that has distanced itself from the Muslim Brotherhood- has used Netanyahoo’s plan to use them to save himself brilliantly against him. Even if the nukes start flying, the Israeli state will be gone in a relatively short time, which I think counts as a W for Hamas.
The ‘saner heads’ in the US desperately want out of the Gaza mess, but too many of their useful idiots are all in on it. Their options, however, are limited to those that will not obviously collapse the system in short order. There’s not much left.
Invoking incompetence is not a helpful guide to predicting the future. Understanding the interests of people in power and the mechanisms and limitations of the system they operate is much more useful.

There have been constant rocket attacks, shootings, bombings etc, many times any odd one has been used as causus belli for the nine previous invasions and bombings. He did not “need” Oct 7th for anything.

Posted by: UWDude | Feb 19 2024 22:01 utc | 197
He most definitely did. His administration was going down the toilet (and still may be). October 7 gave them a lifeline and an opportunity to level Gaza once and for all under the guise of eliminating Hamas.

Great comment. Well stated and comprehensive enough for the purpose. It hearkens back to my previous statements about the seeming need to see the situation as “black or white” thus collapsing the entire spectrum of events into a single, convenient, easy to digest narrative. Neither of us have stated or implied (including by omission) that Hamas isn’t competent or capable of pulling off such an attack, and I think you hit the nail on the head with this:
“…. so the attack that Netenyahoo wanted on Oct 7 was not the one he got, and now his ass in a sling.”

For those that don’t have their property, orchards, timberlands, farms, ranches and futures flooded, that may be.

Posted by: kupkee | Feb 19 2024 21:49 utc | 301
Very little land was flooded, compared to the amount of land that was irrigated via dams, anywhere, and that is not mentioning the clean power source.
Furthermore, you act like all this land was seized. It was bought and replaced.
