I took on considerable personal risk and responsibility to end the wars in Vietnam and Central America. One justificacion for not taking Aaron’s and Norman’s path was that I had to do more by staying alive. My 20s and 30s were spent in this pursuit.

But similar enough (I believe) for Rachel and Aaron to be honored together. Both were honorable American citizens.
Rachel fearlessly faced down a bulldozer that was cruising toward a Palestinian home in Rafah, to demolish it.

The reason that the Vietnamese monk self-immolation case made to the world press was that the media wanted it to be remembered. It was billed as a protest to a “corrupt” government.
The reason Mr. Bushnell’s self-immolation was sanitizes by the US press and played down is the press don’t want it to be noticed. It doesn’t want you to know it is a protest to a corrupt policy.

In the 1960s, the media wasn’t a wholly owned adjunct of the corporate class. Its footwork and analytical skills during that era have been subsequently destroyed since the 1990s, and was already on the way out in the 1980s. Newspapers doomed themselves when they tried to follow TV “news” practices to gain attention and readership. This is the sole reason why we have USA Today. It didn’t work, and now newspapers and journalism in general is almost gone. Real journalism is kept alive only by small independents and single blogger/reporters. Like this site!

What did he achieve? He is now missing on the front line for change.
If all people with empathy kill themselves, it won’t do these people any good.

I disagree-he did more to the cause (PR wise, reality wise) by immolating himself that he could never do as a mere soldier in the US army; as well he didn’t want to ‘soil his soul’ participating in a genocide; his soul was worth more to him than his life.

It’s a strange type of bravery; suicide strikes me as far too solipsistic, bordering on narcissism.
The kid would have better served the Axis of Resistance if he had detonated a “suicide vest” inside an IOF camp, or driven a “truck bomb” into same. He would have wound up just as dead, but with at leastsome chance that his death had concrete ramifications on the enemy’s force disposition.
Notice that neither Hamas nor Hezbollah undertakes “suicide operations” these days: they no longer need to resort to such “desperate” measures, the nature of 4G war having changed with the advent of low-cost FPV drones and such.
The aim of all asymmetric action should be to degrade the enemy’s combat effectiveness: it’s not clear to me that giving IOF soldiers material to masturbate over, achieves that.
Maybe he was hoping that the sickos of the IOF would wank themselves blind.

This shocked me. That someone would burn themselves alive to highlight a wrong is hard to contemplate. Particularly as we armchair warriors think a sarcastic post or a dig at the hegemon is actually doing anything of any significance. The narrative encouraged by the pro-Zionist media commenterati is that all the protests and pressure on politicians etc are from immigrant Muslims “terrorist sympathizers and islamists” who are pressuring politicians by threatening violence, despite the fact that the police have not reported any complaints from any politicians of threats. I have heard this narrative from both Americans and British friends.
This narrative is especially promoted in the UK, where the success of the albeit amended ceasefire resolution in the Commons has been attributed to threats against politicians, despite police reporting no complaints.
Today a Tory MP working as a commentator on conservative media fear mongered about “Islamists” encouraged by the Muslim Mayor of London were controlling London and the Labour Party. This was no doubt in response to the success of the ceasefire vote and like Suella Braverman before him was seeking to pander to the Zionist donor constituency.
This is no doubt aimed at those in denial about non-immigrants and non-muslims supporting a ceasefire in Gaza. This is similar to the conservative narrative about Obama’s election in the US, where those refusing to believe white people voted for Obama comforted themselves with the lie that “millions of illegal immigrants” voted him into the White House. Similarly, Biden is said to be under pressure from voters, but it is implied only voters from a certain community are exerting that pressure.
The tragic protest by the young Air Force raised my curiosity. How widespread is interest in the events of Gaza in your area? Is it confined to certain communities, and if so, which ones and what do they support? Or is demands for a ceasefire widespread and transcending communities?
