Aaron Burned Himself To Make Us Look At Gaza
Like many readers here I feel helpless about the ongoing genocide against Palestinians committed by U.S. supported Zionist settlers in the West Bank and Gaza. I can not even find the right words to express myself about it.
Others are more consequential. And powerful. Disgust about the cruelty imposed on Palestinians can induce the utmost will to change things.
U.S. Air Force Member Sets Self on Fire Outside Israel’s Embassy in D.C. to Protest War in Gaza - Time, Feb 25 2024
An active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, in apparent protest of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, which he described as a “genocide.”
...
The burn victim, who identified himself in video of the incident as 25-year-old Aaron Bushnell, reportedly succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night, according to independent journalist Talia Jane, who posted on social media that she is in contact with Bushnell’s family and friends.
bigger
Bushnell reportedly sent a message to media outlets before his planned self-immolation. “Today, I am planning to engage in an extreme act of protest against the genocide of the Palestinian people,” he warned. ...
On Facebook Sunday morning, he also wrote: “Many of us like to ask ourselves, ‘What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?’ The answer is, you’re doing it. Right now.” The post included a link to a live-stream of his protest on the web-broadcasting platform Twitch, which has since removed the video for violations of its community guidelines and terms of service. “I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I’m about to engage in an extreme act of protest,” the airman repeated, in footage reviewed by TIME, as he walked toward the driveway of the Israeli embassy. “But compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.”After Bushnell doused himself with liquid and reached for his lighter, unidentified law enforcement or security officers could be heard asking off-screen, “Can I help you?” After setting himself aflame, he repeatedly shouted “Free Palestine.”
A security man decided to 'help' by pointing his gun on the dying man.

A censored video of the incident is here.
Rest in peace, Aaron Bushnell. Rest. In. Peace.

The US treasury market failed in 2008; that's why the put in QE, Quantitative Easing , a fancy name for printing currency out of air.
The US Treasury market and US currency is living on borrowed time that is why, IMO, the US is so focused on a larger war and hamstringing Europe.
This is the logic of the true soldier, who is usually forced to sacrifice in the wrong war, and this man has chosen to die on the right side of history and humanity.

Unfortunately, the Russian site did not show Aaron Bushnel speaking in English as he walked to his self-immolation. In the Youtube, you can see this patriot was remarkably composed and rational.
I think his life would have been better used by taking out some Israelis instead. The Buddhist monk back in Vietnam had a religious reason for self-immolation as the preferred form of giving one's life in protest. Non-Buddhist Americans have more American ways, more effective in America. Need I say more ? Please don't burn yourself. If you must get out the gasoline, find something that really needs burned.
May Aaron Bushnell rest in peace.
May the extreme suffering of Palestinians end.
May Palestine get the justice it needs and totally deserves.
May America wake up and end its crimes against humanity.
May Zionism simply end, any way God decides.

If this man's courage is mental illness then selfish, cowardly and vicious acts, on behalf of career advancement, would probably be signs of a well adjusted personality.
The mental illness involved here is the commission of genocide, not protesting against it.

Brave young man, it's good he died though. Nobody would want to live through that. I certainly wouldn't.
I agree with some other posters that I would probably just kill someone else before killing myself. Why waste a death? Wouldn't do anything of course, but neither will his sacrifice. For me it's about justice. Some people just deserve to die anyway, even if it doesn't do anything. Justice demands it.
I think family is really the only thing that keeps me in check. I have religion but I'm a terrible Christian and that probably wouldn't stop me. Hopefully my wife and kids don't leave me because I'm afraid something terrible would probably happen to someone who definitely deserves it. You can't really scare suicidal people with prison or death lol. It's best to just not fuck with them in the first place.

Rest in peace, Aaron Bushnell.
“The self-burning of Vietnamese Buddhist monks… is somehow difficult for Western Christian conscience to understand. The press spoke then of suicide, but in the essence, it is not. It is not even a protest, aimed only at alarming, at moving the hearts of the oppressors. To burn oneself by fire is to prove that what one is saying is of the utmost importance. There is nothing more painful than burning oneself. To say something while experiencing this kind of pain is to say it with utmost courage, frankness, determination, and sincerity.”
--Thich Nhat Hanh, writing to Martin Luther King

The reason that the Vietnamese monk self-immolation case made to the world press was that the media wanted it to be remembered. It was billed as a protest to a "corrupt" government.
The reason Mr. Bushnell's self-immolation was sanitizes by the US press and played down is the press don't want it to be noticed. It doesn't want you to know it is a protest to a corrupt policy.

Aaron Bushnell made sacrifice very few of us can even imagine. A horrific way to die. The hope when undertaking such a symbolic act is to set off a reaction. This is a call to action to stop the genocide. Do what you can, no matter how small it may seem.

Bushnell expressed that we are living in times of genocide and totalitarianism just like the Germans, Russians, Japanese experienced in the 20th century. The Palestinian genocide is our Holocaust. The American carceral state is our Stalinism. The American wars of terror is our imperialism.

Aaron Bushnell sacrifice will ultimately have no effect on the atrocities the U.S. and Israel are committing. Not that his actions were in vain, but the U.S. population has become so manipulated that unless they are told to care about the genocide, they won't even notice. Any time I mention the genocide in Gaza to friends, family or coworkers, their eyes glaze over and they change the subject or flat out ignore my comments. They only ones that don't are the rabid Israel supporters that seem to take great pride in the genocide. The world is surely mad.

Below is a quote from a ZH piece about the Atlanta event....read the end...
It's actually not the first time this has happened on US soil in response to the Gaza war, where at this point close to 30,000 Palestinians have died, according to Gaza sources. In December a person self-immolated in front of the Israeli Consulate in Atlanta. That initial incident received scant media attention, and no information about the protester's identity or even gender were released. Police had only described "likely an extreme act of political protest" - after which the person was hospitalized with severe injuries.
Atlanta's police chief had said at the time that "police are aware of heightened tensions in the Jewish and Muslim community and have stepped up patrols at certain locations, including the consulate." But again, curiously these extreme forms of 'protest' have received little attention in media, possibly because the imagery is so disturbing.

It was darkly amusing to see the guard clutching that gun for dear life like he was imagining the burnt-to-death guy on the pavement was gonna somehow attack him. Rest in peace, Aaron Bushnell.
The mainstream media trying to hide Aaron's motives in their headlines should have the effect of awake people to the complicity of corporate media in this ongoing genocide in Gaza. But it will? I don't want to believe this courageous act was in vain. I hope not. But in our current world most people, good people, simply can't afford the time to think anymore. They assume their personal lives had enough problems already and choose to go along with the narrative lines of events, as they're simplified by corporate media in easy and reassuring words to swallow. Who knows? Maybe his act will shock people back to reality. It is awful to say this, but the fact he was white and a U.S. soldier will speak louder than the dead children of Gaza ever will.

I was shocked to read of this Aaron Bushnell's sacrifice.
My first thought: He actually has done what I am sure others have contemplated, posing to themselves the same questions.
A few months ago, another member of our little Ceasefire group here and I had "confessed" to each other that we had both, separately, wondered whether we should do it, self-immolate. Would it bring anyone to their senses if citizens started to burn themselves up to get attention for the atrocity in Palestine and the atrocity that is our government.
We both concluded that our corrupt overlords would not even notice.
Now we see how "security" officers actually respond: by killing the messenger twice over.
Leaves one speechless.
Who is this officer?
Will he be indicted for attempted murder of an obviously, by definition, helpless citizen (and a veteran)?
Posing that question seems horrifyingly absurd.
(And BTW, "Ouch" seems like an unspeakably flippant reaction.)

This is the appropriate response to this young man's self sacrifice. I only hope is raises the awareness he hoped for.
Nonetheless, this is the sort of will power required to construct and carry out and effective domestic opposition to US imperialism.
If this iron will were shared by millions and devoted instead to a protracted struggle within the US to oust the war crazed imperialist 'ruling class', as he referred to our masters in his final speech, things would immediately improve.
I'm impressed by his noble sentiment and will, but it is ultimately a waste of a good man who, had he lived, could have done more to prosecute the struggle against imperialism in the US.

No, but it may be what it takes to get the attention of the American masses. This kind of act accomplishes nothing by itself, its power is in activating others, tipping the balance, overcoming inertia. There are millions of armed Americans, many of whom have served in the military and hate their own government. If Bushnell's sacrifice stirs them to action- any kind of action- that will get the attention of the ruling class. Not in a good way, it's going to be brutal, but there's never been any hope that the PTB will have a change of heart and give up power willingly.

Posted by: canuck | Feb 26 2024 14:30 utc | 17: Quantitative Easing , a fancy name for printing currency out of air.Anglo-Saxon banking systems have been printing currency out of thin air (OTA) since about 1693; the current euphemism is "fractional reserve banking." Currently roughly 90%-100% of money in the U.S./Bretton-Woods-controlled system is OTA in the form of debt at interest. The global-reserve-currency status of the US$ allows the U.S. to "borrow" (create OTA) new money to pay old debts, a privilege reserved to the U.S. alone.
The preservation of this system and the attempt to secure the commodities required to extort the rest of the world to observe it is the cause of all the U.S.-generated conflict, with Israel and the Ukraine as current examples. The families that control the U.S. probably consider the end of this system an existential threat.
There is a 46.5-minute docu called MONEY AS DEBT which sums it up, notwithstanding the scary music and occasionally unsourceable quotations.

Bushnell was stationed in San Antonio and worked with computers and intelligence. Some 55 years ago, I was stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio and worked for the US Air Force Security Service (USAFSS), the branch of the Air Force working under NSA. USAFSS has since then undergone several reorganizations ad bane changes, so I suspect Bushnell worked for a successor of USAFSS.
If so, his work undoubtedly involved signals intelligence supporting Israel's war in Gaza.

On Friday Feb. 29, there will be a by-election in Rochdale, England to replace a member of Parliament who died. A strong supporter of the Palestinian cause, George Galloway, is running for that seat. Bookies strongly favor Galloway to win the seat. There are many Muslims in the constituency. I suspect Galloway will win in a landslide because of the Gaza issue. Galloway, who once was a Labour MP, but who was expelled from the party because of his strong support of Muslim causes, is running as a candidate for a new party, the Workers Party. If he wins in a landslide, which I think is likely, he will upend politics in the UK.

Drizzt for you Aaron's actions seem insane because you are a narcissitic, irreverent, simple Serf whom can't imagine doing anything selfless.

Thanks very much for informing us of this act, b!!!!!
I've wrote a quick article linking to yours here in order to spread the news as it's being suppressed and censored as we would expect. Also, there's a very explicit message Aaron sent to all his fellow members of the military--they must uphold their oath of service and cease working for the government as that government has broken the Constitution they swore to uphold and defend and continues to break it on a daily basis. Any person in the military who stands-down is 100% legally correct to do so. "Aaron Bushnell Honoring His Oath of Service to the Nth Degree".

I suppose one way it might get more attention is for all of us to send b's article out by e-mail to everyone we know and ask them to send it to all those they know.
Social media may censor it, but we all may have different e-mail providers, so censorship might be more difficult.
Of course, we may make more enemies of friends, family and colleagues, but a relatively minor sacrifice in comparison to Aaron's.

"Anglo-Saxon banking systems have been printing currency out of thin air (OTA) since about 1693.."
Posted by: aij | Feb 26 2024 16:47 utc | 71
Anglo/Saxon paper money was created in 1694-NOT out of 'thin air' but by 1.2 million pounds of silver and gold deposits from bankers and Nolbes who loaned the bullion to King William III for his European war from Nobles and bankers.
The Earl of Marlborough, (later the Duke of Marlborough) John Churchill, was one of the investors.
Only the fiscal collapse of the USGov via the Treasury market failure can bring this all to a halt. April 15 always brings some brutal remimders of what your money buys."

I totally agree with this.

Not to stir controversy, but I thought it was policy for many media outlets not to publicize suicides.

The self-immolations of Buddhist monks in Vietnam were certainly reported by the US media.

One good soldier sacrificing changes nothing.
A bunch of good soldiers organising may lead to the necessary regime change.
What needs to be burning to the ground, with the occupiers inside, is the Congress, Wall Street, military Industrial complex, Langley, Pentagon, NATO and EU headquarters, and the Knesset.
I say this because I'm a decent human, for the world to have peace, the trouble makers (non human beats Thati are happy with massacres) have to disappear in ashes or the guillotine.

Aaron Bushnell needs a proper obituary. I'd like to know something of his parents, who raised him right, and his siblings. Where is his hometown?

Please be careful not to conflate the murder of Rachel Corrie with this particular act of ultimate sacrifice.
The similarities exist, but the reality should be emphasized.

Months after the immolation in South Vietnam, and the promised reforms not delivered, the CIA ended the Diem administration.

I'm showing my age, but 50-60 years ago, most everyone would have known that members of the USAF are referred to as Airmen, and it would have been important to mention his rank. These are signs of just how separated the general society is from the details of the American Military.

"Not to stir controversy, but I thought it was policy for many media outlets not to publicize suicides."
They want to suppress the fact of how rife suicide has become on account of what a truly hideous society this has become. It's part of the propaganda function, a form of censorship.
Of course this level of suicide as determined political protest is another thing altogether, to be ruthlessly censored.

Injuries you can not see....able bodied on the outside, bent and broken on the inside....everyone is affected by PTSD, their own or someone they know.
Cheers M
....any sane person not suffering just a little PTSD, in real time, over the Massacre Of Gaza....
