Ukraine Finally Starts To Build Defense Lines

After wasting ten-thousands of men in hopeless battles the Ukrainian comedian has finally acknowledged that his army's performative 'counter-attacks' and hold-to-the-last-man defenses have made no sense.

Politco's Dreamer of the year finally calls for building defensive lines:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for a faster buildup of major defensive lines amid Kyiv’s stalled counteroffensive and concerns that Russia could attempt to take more territory.

Zelenskiy urged greater speed and efficiency in building defenses in a video statement on Telegram after a meeting with key military and security officials Tuesday evening. He encouraged local communities to pitch in and pledged to make money available for the effort.

“Our country will definitely have enough mines and concrete,” he said. He didn’t provide details on where the fortifications would be built or how extensive they might be.

It took the Russian army several months and lots of money to build its extensive defense lines in the southeast of Ukraine.

Zelenski has neither the time nor the money to build solid lines but he wants many of them (machine translation):

According to Zelensky, he held a meeting on fortification in all major directions – first of all on Avdiivka and Maryinsky, as well as on Kupyansk and on the Kupyansk – Liman line, in Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

In addition, fortifications will be built along the entire border with Russia and Belarus.

"We will work with our partners to strengthen our defensive lines," the president added.

Earlier, Zelensky already spoke about a "special" meeting of the Stavka, where they discussed strengthening the fortification.

Comments Strana (machine translation):

This is quite a landmark statement. It sounds like an announcement of the construction of large-scale defensive lines-similar to the one that Russia has built in the south.

And more broadly, this can be interpreted as a transition to a defensive strategy, which began to be talked about more and more often after the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine actually stopped, and the Russians themselves switched to large-scale attacks.

But officially, the authorities do not talk about the transition to defense, and the main thesis remains that the APU is preparing to attack, and there is no deadlock (which even the commander-in-chief Valery Zaluzhny wrote about) at the front.

Zelenski called for private companies to build the new fortifications. In the context of Ukraine that means more corruption – lots of it – as government officials will ask for kick backs for any contract they may sign. Previous attempts of privately build defense lines had ditches that were too shallow and of little utility. Some concrete was poured but in the wrong places and shapes.

There were reasons why Ukraine failed last summer to overcome the Russian defense lines. It lacked the artillery support, air-superiority and sheer mass that is required to achieve that. But Russia has all of that – an enormous amount of heavy siege artillery (200 mm and beyond), a ridiculous superiority in the number of unmanned drones and manned fighter planes and lots of new contract soldiers. Any lines the Ukrainians can build will be overcome by superior Russian forces.

Yes, passing Ukrainian minefields will be difficult. But there are ways and means to do such.

Thanks to its previous lunatic attempts the Ukrainian army has lost too many men to hold each and every line. And while the Ukrainian army will have to defend everywhere, the Russia one can choose the one or two local fronts where it wants to breach the defense lines to pass through them.

What is planned now is too little too late to save Ukraine.

Why wasn’t Marinka’s full capture discussed? The capture of the southwestern part of the city marks the end of the heavy fighting we have witnessed in these 646 days of fighting.
However, it is still too early to say that the battle for Heorhiivka/Георгіївка is about to begin, in fact, there are still 1300 meters to reach the dam, which marks the boundary of the township, 1300 meters that will still be costly for attacker and defender advancing over the ruins of what once became a town and which is now engulfed by snow.
But even when the town falls under complete Russian control, it will not mean an acceleration of advances in the region. Winter is about to arrive and with it the reduction of operational capabilities on the front.
Possible actions of the Russian army will be the extension of the zone of control around the locality by approaching Krasnogorrivka/Красногорорівка from the south and Pobjeda/Побєда from the north by taking the heights overlooking the village of Kostyantynivka/Костянтинівка.

The Hersh story doesn’t jibe with the Ukraine switching to building defenses. If the Russians are ready to thrown in the towel, why invest in thousands of miles of expensive ditches?
Anyway, a ceasefire now would be a significant loss for Russia. I see no indication they are anywhere near in bad enough shape to consider defeat at this point. The Ukrainians? Absolutely, but not the Russians.

Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation: There will be no truce with Ukraine, the goals of the Special Military Operation will be achieved
Against the backdrop of a wave of publications in the Western press about the need to freeze the conflict in Ukraine, about the so-called “Korean option,” some fears naturally arose that Russia might fall for this bait. Because a certain elite layer is still interested in this.
However, there was a positive vibe from the interview of Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov to Izvestia. (https://iz.ru/1612456/semen-boikov/ia-ne-dumaiu-chto-otnosheniia-rossii-i-nato-vosstanoviatsia)
Correspondent’s question: So you don’t expect a truce next year?
Answer from S. Ryabkov: Not only do I not expect a truce, I expect that the goals of the Special Military Operation will certainly be achieved.
In the same interview, Ryabkov said that the US’s readiness to force Ukraine to a truce next year “is not something that is not visible, but I can’t imagine it at the current stage”: “There is nothing to discuss with us on the conditions that Ukraine has put forward.” .
Let me remind you that we are talking about the so-called “Zelensky peace formula” of 10 points, involving the surrender of Russia, the withdrawal of troops to the borders of Ukraine in 1991, the payment of reparations, etc.
At the same time, the Russian diplomat emphasized that “on such a basis, not only will no agreements be possible, but dialogue is also impossible.”
Russia’s victory at the front is inevitable, I am 100% sure of it. And the main thing for us, taking into account the lessons of History, is not to let it be stolen. In this regard, the position of the Russian Foreign Ministry stated above inspires optimism.

It’s never been quite clear to me whether the artist / conspiracy theorist Miles Mathis is a nutcase or not. But he does make a very interesting point in his writings about Hitler. He says the establishment always makes sure the public gets not one, but two stories that obfuscate the truth about any issue.
The first story is the official story peddled by the MSM. Take for instance the official conclusion that the Russians blew up their own Nordstream pipeline.
The second story is given credibility by appearing as the official challenger to the first story. It’s not the Russians, says Hersch, the Americans did it with the help of the Norwegians.
If two stories are not enough, a third one will be crafted. The Ukrainians did it… The stories are designed to lock people’s minds up into false dichotomies and kill any attempt at getting to the truth.
Pushing story #2 seems to be Hersch’s speciality. Should we believe him this time? I doubt it.

Sanctions package #12 is on the way!
FT | US aims to halve Russia’s energy revenues by 2030, says official

Geoffrey Pyatt, US assistant secretary of state stalking for energy resources, told the Financial Times that the curbs on Vladimir Putin’s ability to fund the Ukraine invasion must ensure Russia can never again mount an attack on its neighbours.
“This is something that we’re going to have to stick to for years to come, as long as Putin persists in this war,” said Pyatt, who has previously served as the US ambassador to Ukraine and to Greece.
Russia has continued to export large volumes of oil since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, the International Energy Agency [IEA] has forecast that its oil and gas exports could fall by at least 40-50 per cent by 2030 LOL! if western sanctions on Russia’s energy industry are maintained.
“We’re going to do everything we can to help make that true,” Pyatt said. “The goal of these sanctions is to change Russia’s behaviour and to ensure that Putin is not in a position, whenever some kind of peace is achieved . . . to use three or four years to re-arm and prepare himself and prepare his military for stage three [?] of the Ukraine invasion,” he added.

“… The West is nothing but a talk-shop that ignores Russia as well as the vast majority of facts related to the entire Ukraine issue. …”
Hmm, so yeah, the West negotiates in public like our politicians debate on stage, with gobs and gobs of deflection. Clips that just went up of DeSantis debating Newsom amply demonstrate that.
So through the backchannels it would have to be at first, with the first rounds of them being “throwaways”, as our diplomats would know the media had inevitably sniffed out such taking place, and would want to be able to credibly leak that they were standing strong, talking tough, and demanding a lot while offering little.
Eventually though, Russia’s progress on the battlefield would mandate progress in the talks, if they were going to continue, and the West would need for them to continue, for political reasons.

I thought Palestine was a planned diversion from US defeat in Ukraine.
What Ukraine does is irrelevant.
The US has signalled that Ukraine will not join the EU or Nato. It will join an irrelevant conglomeration of Baltic states and be a good investment for Blackrock.
They’d be better off rebuilding the hydro electric dam they blew up because they’re certainly not going to get their mits on any nukes.
Russia has never threatened an invasion of any sort, merely a change of USUKIS policy of aggression towards Russia.
USUKIS is getting its war porn elsewhere.
The neocons are jerking on killing innocent Palestinians instead of innocent Ukrainians , Armenians and Yemenis.
Africa awaits its fate.
But Africa has noted the fact that a centrally controlled economy has enjoyed an economic boom in the face of Western sanctions while neo-liberal spendthrift USUKIS is bankrupt.
Africa has been given more hope in two years by Russia’s defeat of Ukraine than by 2000 years of European colonisation.
So there is now a sketch for a better future, a future in which USUKIS is defeated intellectually, morally and spiritually along with its Islamist and Nazi ticks.

Nothing that Hersh said about NordStream has been corroborated. While the basic thesis of US involvement surely is correct, none of the details have been verified – so the whole story remains merely conjecture. So now we have a new story from Hersh with some plausible elements mixed with implausible ones. I do believe that, whenever a settlement is reached, Russia would prefer to deal with a military lead government that would be capable of dealing with the fascist militias and unruly oligarchs – in lieu of having that be Russia’s responsibility as an occupying power. We will see.

With regards to building out defensive lines an aspect not being commented on is the time of year that it is done.
The Russians build there lines in the late spring/early summer when the ground had firmed up and the weather was pretty benign.
The Ukrainians will have to try and build structures and trenches in winter when the ground is wet and unstable. Even if they find earth movers the risk of them getting bogged down, not all defences will be alongside hard roads, will be very high. As already mentioned, concrete is a problem at low temperatures.
This is a link to a current Ukraine weather map. Add snow cover to the problems that are coming.

Yes, a good remark there. The train is the easiest of all the overland transports to fix, nowadays especially.
Heh, those Imaginary SuperSpecForces better not be caught. It definitely helps to argue that a claim “this the only connect to China” might be also used as a call for Chinese-Rus improving the line. They tried to create NS3 event towards China? Pathetic, as it also appears as Anti-Chinese sabotage, too.
Perhaps NATO is hoping for some joint Chino-Rus operation? I am sure that NATO is not happy about the Russo-Turk one, protecting the Turk Stream and a South Stream, from literally everyone from the West.
I, basically do not understand what is NATO doing right now, as it is very obfuscated, and it is curious to see and understand what NATO will do. Whatever else is happening, apart from RF capturing a village by villages, while having a deep 40-80 km reach over the front-lines. Currently aiming to increase that in range and delivery intensity, makes me doubt that RF is talking with anybody from AFU, let alone NATO.
Until anything of such is confirmed, it is just a speculation cycle forever.
Of course that the West allowing Ukraine’s surrendering, before it is flattened to even more pieces and levels of suffering, would be the wisest decision the West ever made since 2001 and 9/11 event, as far the recent history goes. But as we see it, with the Palestine combined in, its rating and the future doesn’t look good.
As it appears, the SMO goes the whole way, explained by Putin 2 years ago.

I would like to inform you all that the old “MAD” nuclear deterrent is no longer in effect.
If there is a nuclear war, expect not a single US nuclear weapon to achieve its objective, and every Russian nuclear weapon to strike successfully.
The silo based intercontinental ballistic missiles the US has are 60 year old “Minute Man Three” missiles and still use “floppy disk memory”. The last few tests of these missiles failed.
The Russian “nuclear torpedo” is NOT to cause a tsunami in Boston. The Russian nuclear torpedos are assigned to all US ICBM launching submarines. The “time to target” is zero seconds. If any US submarines launch nuclear weapons, the Russian nuclear torpedo will detonate and take out both the US submarine and the missiles it launched.
Do not pretend large strategic bombers can make it to Moscow to drop their nuclear bombs. Please give one number for the top ten countries of the total number of areal weapons interceptions since the year 2,000. In other words, tell us all ONE NUMBER of the grand total of each and every enemy weapon the US has intercepted in the air. Friendly fire does not count, planned tests do not count, only ENEMY airborne weapons are to be counted.
So, since the year 2,000 the United States has intercepted exactly 37 enemy airborne weapons, and China has intercepted 0 enemy weapons, and Israel has intercepted 300 enemy airborne weapons, and Russia has intercepted five million seven hundred thousand enemy airborne weapons. Well, I want YOU to give the numbers for actual enemy airborne weapons interceptions for the top 10 countries, and you will admit it is unlikely the US will be able to fly a Strategic bomber to drop nuclear bombs on Moscow.
So the US does not have any nuclear weapons that are likely to successfully attack Russia, while on the other hand, the US has no way to shoot down a Russian nuclear weapon aimed at the Continental US or Western Europe.
Furthermore, do NOT take any threat of Israel using nuclear weapons seriously! While Hamas is an Israeli puppet and there is no way Palestinians can defeat the Ashkanazi European settlers by targeting the sacrificial trinkets like tanks and troops, if the Palestinians stop shooting the tanks and start shooting the machine infrastructure like ships and runways and business profits, the Palestinians can win easily without killing unnecessarily.

How can you best defend a 3000 km border against an opponent who is superior in all respects? There was and is only one solution: for the country to find a leader who represents the country’s interests – and not an agitator installed from abroad.
<=there is another probably better certainly safer solution I think for the Ukrainian people. Ukraine could once again, merge with, and become an integral and functional part of Russia..if it were not for the private control over the nation state system Ukraine would never have left Russia. within a few years, the propaganda and education of the Ukrainian people would see Ukrainians as Russian centric..

Hersh is a gatekeeper. He’s been a gatekeeper since at least 1983 when he wrote a book on the shooting down of Korean Airlines 007, “challenging” the official story that evil Soviets deliberately destroyed a passenger aeroplane. His line: Incompetent Soviets shot down a passenger aeroplane, not by malice but from stupidity and incompetence.
The idea, obviously, was to quench the idea that it was a spy plane deliberately sent into harm’s way by the CIA.
[Over Nordstream II whom does Hersh carefully not mention, let alone blame? Why did Liz Truss message “it’s done” 6 seconds after the blast took place? How did she know if the Brutish weren’t involved?]

This propagandistic piece by politico serves to provide cover up for such actions and justify their endless repetitions. After all, it’s “Ukraine” doing it and that country is in a military conflict with Russia.

‘…Hamas is an Israeli puppet…” Hot Carl@129
Do you actually believe that?
Your evidence presumably, is the role that Israel played in splitting its founders from the PLO and the often repeated boasts that by using Hamas Israel could kill the Two State option.
But all that tells us is that politics are complex and politicians make judgements which produce consequences that they neither anticipated or desired.
All the evidence and there is plenty of it, is that Hamas is fighting Israel and vice versa. And that there are lots of things that they do which are likely to prove to be counteproductive.
But that doesn’t mean that they are working together or that it is all a bloody theatrical production, scripted and planned ny the lizards that rule us all.
I am constantly amazed by the ease with which sensible people slip out of shrewd analysis, often based on history, of current events into really irrational assertions of conspiracies. My guess is that it is a result of living in an intellectual atmosphere dominated by anti-communist, hierarchy celebrating ideologies.
YYou were really making a lot of sense until those final sentences.

So what is your answer? Either the Russians did it to themselves- and no doubt you could tell us why they would.
Or the US government was responsible, which given its track record and the President’s boasts seems not unlikely even before we take into account that it has profited immensely in many ways from the destruction of the pipeline.
Oh no, you tell us, it’s more complicated than that: there are always several misleading stories and Hersh has fallen for them (invented them?) in the past. Therefore we know that he won’t be telling us the truth. Which means the US is off the hook. And he is a ‘limited hamgout.’
All the actual evidence suggests otherwise but, bugger evidence, Mr Mathis has a theory. And that means what?
I’m really not tempted to investigate what his theory about Hitler is…

Kissinger’s death should be a moment of reflection with regard to Ukraine,Gaza,Russia, and China(but won’t be). The bold and imaginative diplomatic moves he made will not be repeated.
He was produced by a powerful Presidency that could take decisive action. Today, that’s almost impossible. Anyone who suggests talking with Russia is a “Putin Bot” or troll. Sanctions against Cuba look eternal. Neither China nor anyone else can rely on anything the US promises because it’s always subject to revision on a whim.
By default, diplomacy is nearly impossible as it reflects the divisive mob spirit of the American people. This is why we keep reading silly proposals for peace in Ukraine (or anywhere) that won’t go anywhere. They can’t suggest anything else because the system won’t allow anything else. This way, even ‘experts’ fall into delusional thinking. Ukraine will only be solved by demographic extinction and I think Russia knows it.

How often have we heard this story from Western sources over the last two years – that the Russians are looking for a way out of the war but it’s only Putin’s refusal to lose face or look at the facts on the ground that is preventing this. Now, when according to this narrative it’s the Ukrainian military commander – against the wishes of both the Ukrainian President and the White House – who wants to get out of the war, the Russians are supposed to be willing to accept a deal that amounts to almost total capitulation. Nothing but the territory they already occupy, and not even really that since there is no way for Zaluzhny to guarantee Ukrainian parliamentary or international recognition of a commitment he makes to cede Ukrainian territory.
Beyond that, the subsidiary points raised in this potential deal read like total NAFO fan fiction. For example “It also would agree to remove its military from areas near the Baltic states and Moldova.” Areas “near the Baltic States” can only mean Russian territory itself so in this fantasy we’re imagining that Russia is going to agree to establish DMZs on its own territory in its own border regions. If Putin and the Russian military were truly desperate to the extent that they would put something like that on the table then the last thing that the West would be interested in was a deal of any sort – they would expect Ukraine to fight on to total victory. In that sense, the story doesn’t even have the virtue of internally self-consistent logic to add to its believability.

Dear “juliania”, you are definitely not the average western citizen and indeed your views on the subjects discussed in MoA would almost certainly brand you a political heretic, a hater or an agent of Putin or something for the masses that eagerly devour the narrative served to them by the MSM. Therefore, your positive impressions are not representative of those of a citizen in the west or even beyond, one that is subjected to a carefully tailored Russophobic narrative.
Further, as the statements of the Foreign Minister of North Macedonia and others reveal, Lavrov didn’t have the positive reaction he expected. On the people’s views no one knows them. Lavrov tried to play friendly, expressing his critical views on the subject of the dissolution of Yugoslavia, although the latter development has been sadly approved by the local populace (indeed in most of the former Yugoslavia). He also took a position on the dispute between Greece and North Macedonia (although that has been theoretically solved) on the side of the latter, but as it is clear that will not change the course of the country’s integration in NATO and the EU, obviously because it enjoys significant support.
Overall, he didn’t score the points he wanted not with the locals, not with the western masters of the OSCE, while allowing these miscreants to present him as a pariah. Whatever a commentator in MoA might think, it is irrelevant to the message that will reach the intended audience in the west and beyond, an audience that is ignorant of Mr. Sanchez’s substack and views.
Again, propaganda is conducted for a reason since time immemorial. If it didn’t matter, those master manipulators that run the Anglo-American empire wouldn’t invest so much in it.

For two or three months leading up to the “Greatest Ukrainian Counter-Offensive”, against the repeatedly expressed hesitancy of the Ukrainian leadership (political and military), the Western backers were extremely vocal in their demands for more dead Ukrainians, to satiate their blood-lust for dead Slavs.
100,000+ dead Ukrainians later, the West says, “that was DELICIOUS! but never mind. gotta run.”

Struggling to prove to the western imperialists that one can be part of their august and esteemed community when the same westerners are vomitting neo-Hitlerite propaganda against one’s own is by no stretch of the English language “the right thing”. It is a mark of severe inferiority complex.
How can it be so hard to grasp that? The same people who pretended to show interest in Lavrov’s presence in an OSCE conference have openly organized called for the balkanization of Russia on the basis of statelets first invented in the plans of the Nazis and describe the people of the RF in the very apocapyptic terms the Nazis used. The very Euros who invited Lavrov in Scopje, unleashed a visceral racist propaganda that denounced the Russians a subhuman, Asiatic mongrel horde threatening the superior western civilization.
Again, we are not talking about a different cast of people, but the same scum that turned their countries into globalist vassals and whose main and overt aim is the destruction of Russia. When does one start to treat them accordingly?

I don’t think most people realize just how difficult it is to make concrete (to say nothing of pouring it, transporting it, shaping it, etc). It’s not the raw materials that’s the problem, it’s the STUPENDOUS amount of energy it takes to fire it.
Russia, of course, has tons of energy to make concrete and factories far from the front lines. But Ukraine has neither. Any concrete making factory is gonna light up the infrared spectrum like a spotlight – because it is literally one giant furnace.
And we all know Europe is far too energy-poor to ramp up concrete production anytime soon. Good luck making any headway with new concrete-based defensive lines and structures ESPECIALLY now that winter is here.

I agree that Zelensly’s declarations appear to be mostly hype, but complacency isn’t warranted. Even extensive minefields can inflict unnecessary losses and hamper advances. Overall, steady action is required so that the NATO forces (which is what Russia actually faces even in the case of the AFU) won’t get entrenched.

As follows from the document reviewed by TASS, if technically possible, FSB border service officers will carry out fingerprint registration, photography or identification in real time. The information received will be transmitted to the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 24 hours from the day the migrant crosses the state border, and if technically possible, in real time. “If during identification a foreign citizen is identified who has changed his/her identification data and whose entry into the Russian Federation is restricted, such foreign citizen is subject to liability in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation,” the bill says.

Posted by: retroflecks | Dec 2 2023 8:43 utc | 168

A small but important detail when comparing with the Russian defensive line construction, is that right now, the reach of Russian drones, missiles and aircraft far into Ukrainian territory, at low cost, would be many, many times more deadly and effective than the reach Ukraine had into Russian held areas at the time of construction. In other words, solid defense lines and construction equipment, workers and material will be targeted just as well once concentrated. The activity of (larger) construction would be the opposite from Ukraine’s decentralized, underground and highly mobile tactics so far. Supply lines are even more sensitive. Maybe if the biggest construction would be around Dnieper but we can already see the carnage in Kherson where construction was indeed attempted at Ukrainian side of the river. As in my view, that was never really offensive but operational, all the fighting there last months, to establish how and where constructions could be and prevent targeting.
Also announcements from Kiev or from the Iron NATO bank are usually weeks or even months behind what’s already being done and implemented.

from the linked politico article:

According to preliminary data, aviation fuel on the second cargo train was spilled over an area of 150 square meters.

applying the square-root operator, we can determine that a puddle of fuel roughly 12m x 12m was spilled… so basically all the fuel fell in a puddle the length of one fuel-tanker car. They could have saved the explosives and just drilled a hole to achieve this milestone.
Buryatia Oblast is East and south of Lake Baikal. Shares no border with China, only with Mongolia (transhipping all Russian-Chinese trade across Mongolia when they have a long border at Chinese Manchuria?).
The sabotage was in Northern Buryatia.
OpenStreetMap.org centered and zoomed at named sites of sabotage
Itikit/Итыкит is at top-left of zoomed image, Severomuysk/Северомуйск is at lower-right. Dotted line is tunnel connecting these 2 points. Above-ground rail (detour route) is the main line visible (black-white-dash-fill) with some fairly insane hair-pin bends — the topography these must be a hell of a place to build a railway.

Now, Russia is tackling Avdeevka pretty much last, not first, as Nato expected, in the situation where the professional AFU is long gone and rolled over several times. Limiting operation in Donbass, and concentrating fully on Avdeevka would have been a huge losing strategy and probably resulted much closer to the Afghanistan (1980s) situation Nato wanted. Also it would leave most of Ukraine intact.

Very interesting conjecture to explain why Russia has endured the shelling of Donetsk city from Avdeevka . I’ve read from Russian sources that the Ukrainians threatened to blow up spent chemical silos from the coke and chemical factory and send a toxic cloud over to Donetsk. But your conjecture is a lot more plausible. It follows the general rule, don’t do what your enemy expect you to do.

Transshipping is not an issue – sealed containers, same railway gauge. Mongoli is a well run family business with a clear eye to their own interes, good neighbors to both Russia and China.
All the industrially dense regions in China are further south, there is much less up in snowy Manchuria. The way across Mongolia is much shorter on a line from Beijing to Moscow.

It had never occurred to me to think that Russia was struggling to prove that they can be part of the west. To get along with one’s neighbors or other citizens of the world is simply common decency. One does not need to like their neighbors, be like their neighbors, or even want to be like their neighbors in order to be decent human beings. Humility and decency are no signs of a severe inferiority complex – rather the opposite!
It is more a matter of discretion, rather than inability, in what I choose to grasp.

As in mid-late Summer ‘44, Russia has the ability to strike where she pleases, only constrained by the usual constant operating factors. Every section of the front is now in an equally dire state, and with little to no strategic reserve, the Ukrainians now have no choice transitioning to a defensive posture, an admission of failure it itself. As my fencing coach used to say, any defence should be a delayed attack, otherwise you have mentally already conceded the point and with it the fight. Ukraine have now been forced into that mindset, with their disastrous ‘offensive’, and Russia will take full advantage of this mental and positional calcification.

What is going on there in Russia? Don’t they know that on this Earth its killed or be killed? Peace is a pipe dream.
Russia finally started killing like nearly 2 years ago, after waiting for like forever and messing around with useless peace treaties because they weren’t certain if they had the wherewithal to do the job, and now they want to stop already. Russia wants to stop just when its evident to all that the Red Army juggernaut, albeit in low key SMO mode, can’t be stopped. Furthermore, from the perspective of WW2, it takes Russia 2 years to ramp up its killing potential to maximum efficiency, and now just as Russia has reached its 2 years of preparation and is about to start killing at maximum efficiency, now Russia wants to stop killing and pursue peace. So the Red Army juggernaut can’t be stopped and is only going to get going properly next year, but now Russia wants peace. Russia has crossed the Rubicon, the show must go on, its not like the West is going to stop killing.

Which action fits in nicely with RF leadership’s goal of depleting NATO and US Pacific allies so that they have nothing left by which they can wage aggressive war against RF.

He writes, citing a source in the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture, that in November Soros Jr. and the head of Zelensky’s office, Yermak, reached an agreement under which Ukraine would indefinitely and gratuitously transfer land to American companies for the disposal of hazardous waste from the chemical, pharmaceutical and oil industries.
Among the companies named are Dow Chemical, DuPont, BASF, Evonik Industries, Vitol and Sanofi, speaking of regions in western Ukraine known for fertile black soil.

Most of the armoured platforms given to Ukraine fit into three categories
1. Outdated platforms that are woefully unsuited for the SMO, but make up the numbers, (Leo I’s , M113’s etc)
2. Combat effective platforms that NATO cannot maintain, due to pitiful budgets and declining manpower (MBT’s, IFV’s)
3. Combat platforms that are now redundant due to their form no longer fitting a specific function, (MRAP’s etc).
Russia, on the other hand has:
1. Current platforms that have been upgraded and given a mid-service life extension programme, thanks to combat experience.
2. Outdated platforms, refitted thanks to increased budgets and manning levels.
Both sides will have significantly smaller numbers of platforms at the end of the SMO, Russia’s, will be out of choice (armoured units are expensive to maintain and of limited use), NATO’s as a result of the former’s actions, though its MIC will seek to gain from the ‘failure’ its political classes.

Although vandalism of synagogues and cemeteries persists—and the country has a weakness for venerating 20th-century heroes who instigated pogroms—there hasn’t been a single anti-Semitic assault reported in the country since August 2016.

“There was a steady drumbeat from Russia that a fascist junta was taking over,” according to Sam Sokol, the author of Putin’s Hybrid War and the Jews. In the face of this slander, Ukrainians self-consciously set out to debunk the charge. “Anti-Semitism dropped sharply after the Russian invasion,” Likhachev told me.

Still, Anatevka’s fairy-tale ending comes with a foreboding coda. A monument honoring Tevye’s creator, Sholem Aleichem, stands across from the Brodsky synagogue, in Kyiv. Soon after I left the country this fall, vandals spray-painted red swastikas on the statute’s belly and one of its legs, the marks of a disease that can’t be eradicated and might violently flare again. Ukraine’s fitful journey toward liberalism suggests that even seemingly decisive victories are tenuous, easily undone by the forces lurking within. “

He [Leshchenko ] told me how he had first caught wind of Zelensky’s presidential ambitions, well before his campaign launched. Out of journalistic curiosity, Leshchenko had asked to meet the potential candidate, to get a sense of the man and his intentions.
…
When Leshchenko talked about corruption, Zelensky didn’t know basic facts about the judicial system. “It was clear from the first meeting that he had limited knowledge,” he told me. Leshchenko saw an opening to shape Zelensky’s agenda, to mold him into a tribune of reform.

Leshchenko found himself drawn into the campaign, attending sensitive meetings with U.S. diplomats and officials from the World Bank.

In 2012, Forbes Ukraine reported his [She-lenskis] company’s income as $15 million. Zelensky was rich enough to purchase a 15-room villa in Tuscany (a property he neglected to declare during his presidential campaign).
In a BBC interview, Zelensky credited Monty Python as a primary comic influence, but he’s also said that his style is more Benny Hill. Vladislav Davidzon, the editor of The Odessa Review, told me, “His comedy was puerile, vulgar, and working-class—what the Russians call ‘bazaar humor.’”

One oligarch told me that he watched Zelensky headline a birthday party for Viktor Yanukovych, the pro-Russian president, who would later be ousted from power during a revolution in 2014.
That year, after Putin’s annexation of Crimea, Kvartal 95 cut its lucrative ties with the Russian market. “I don’t want to have anything in common with Russia,” Zelensky told a friend. The company donated 1 million hryvnia to the ragtag Ukrainian army—a contribution that earned him splenetic denunciations from politicians in Moscow. A year later, Zelensky began creating Servant of the People. The new show exuded sincerity and idealism, but in retrospect it was a campaign announcement spread over three seasons. The series depicted a politician rising up against cartoonish oligarchs,
….
‘Four days before Zelensky’s inauguration, the oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky boarded a private jet. The fourth-richest man in Ukraine—a figure both accused of ordering contract killings (which he denies) and hailed for fending off Vladimir Putin—was returning home from self-imposed exile in Israel to the city of Dnipro. The plane descended toward a skyline dominated by Kolomoisky’s monumental construction, the Menorah Center, seven marble-and-glass buildings in the shape of a candelabra: the largest Jewish community center in the world. Before returning to his native city, he told reporters that he “will not be the shadow leader of the country and the gray cardinal.” It was the sort of denial that suggestively implies everything it ostensibly refutes.
Kolomoisky’s return was triumphant, but his exit had been ignominious. The government had nationalized the bank he’d founded after discovering a $5.6 billion hole in its ledgers. Investigators reported that the bank had fraudulently loaned Kolomoisky and his business partner massive sums (both men deny this). A court in London froze $2 billion of their assets. When Kolomoisky departed Ukraine, he said he feared that the government would “invent” a criminal case against him.
…
But with the election of Volodymyr Zelensky, Kolomoisky had every reason to believe that his most lucrative days in the country were ahead of him. The Zelensky presidency likely never would have happened without Kolomoisky’s not-so-hidden hand. It was Kolomoisky’s television network that broadcast Kvartal’s programs, including Servant of the People. And it was Kolomoisky’s network that touted Zelensky’s candidacy in its news coverage. Over the course of the campaign, Zelensky reportedly visited Israel and Switzerland 13 times, places where Kolomoisky happened to have homes.’
…
‘Zelensky realized that he needed an American understanding of the situation confronting him, so he sought the advice of a former Obama-administration official named Amos Hochstein, who served on the board of supervisors for Ukraine’s state gas company. During a nearly three-hour session, Zelensky asked pointed questions; he found the mayor’s relationship with the president maddeningly unclear. Was Giuliani an official representative of the Trump administration or a freelance operator? Did Zelensky have a diplomatic obligation to meet with him? And why did Giuliani want to cause so much trouble for a presidency that hadn’t even begun?’
— [ YEAH YEAH A COMPLETELY UNCONNECTED IMPARTIAL ..WHO? A CLOSE ADVISER TO BIDEN 2011- 17 ] even Wiki has this :
‘While at the State Department, Hochstein worked as a close advisor to Vice-President Biden.[4] He served in the administration from 2011 to 2017.[5]

On August 10, 2021, United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that he is appointing Hochstein as the Senior Advisor for Energy Security, and he was subsequently appointed Special Presidential Coordinator for Global Infrastructure and Energy Security.[9][10][11] He currently also leads Biden’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment.[12]
Biography

I don’t think most people realize just how difficult it is to make concrete (to say nothing of pouring it, transporting it, shaping it, etc). It’s not the raw materials that’s the problem, it’s the STUPENDOUS amount of energy it takes to fire it.

After all, no one is interested in the concrete or in a line of defense anymore.
It’s just a big donation because of this thing. That is sure all.
take a look at the facts of the last few days:
* a lot of money has been stopped
* Ammunition was not delivered
* Abrahams were stopped
* extreme numbers of deaths has been published
* General and President trouble
* Oligarchs are afraid of destroyed possessions/firms (Akhmetov – first statment in the phone call with Poro)
* public dispute over the ukrain/russian language
* explosive gifts in boxes, just before the Christmas season
* collapse of the front
it is the last payment after this horror show

Dima said he thinks the “Semour Hersh” information of Zaluzhny-RUAF negotiations is fake for several reasons. The real power in Ukraine doesn’t belong to Zelensky or Zaluzhny, but the nationalist battalions like Azov or Kraken. They don’t want any sort of peace and could immediately coup either Zelensky or Zaluzhny. Zelensky could (and probably will) start a criminal investigation against Zaluzhny even based on the rumor.

Naive @141:“I was always advised not to build anything with cement when the temperatures are below zero degree Celsius. And currently all the north of Ukraine is below zero.”
This is not a problem for professionals. The chemical reaction in setting concrete is exothermic and releases a bit of heat. This can be sped up (more heat) with additives, even just extra water, or for more extreme conditions calcium chloride works. Using concrete in unusual conditions is certainly doable, but it is a little more technical than a homeowner patching a driveway with a bag of premix from the hardware store or something like that.
With that said, I wonder how many professionals the Ukraine still has? Middle class turd-brains (ie: fascists) consider themselves economically irreplaceable (despite having no economically productive skills) while they happily throw truly irreplaceable skilled tradesmen into the meat grinder. Many of those old guys the Ukraine is shoving into the trenches to die are taking with them important skills that would be very helpful if the Ukraine wanted to do something productive, like construction work. Marketing hacks, middle managers, real estate salesmen, and lawyers are worse than useless if you are actually trying to get anything done.

South Front has a view on the new AFU defensive line. They seem to think Ukraine intends to build the lines very close to current contact lines, and at least east of Dnieper river. Russia spent $500 million equivalent on Surovikin line, if Ukraine builds what they intend, they would need $10 billion on the total planned defensive line running from Zaporozhye/Kamyanske through Ugledar to Kharkov along the Belarus border. This is more than the last 5 months worth of foreign aid to Ukraine.
The number of $10 billion could be multiplied due to extensive corruption in Ukraine.

My bet is that is precisely what the whole Hersh rumor is intended to accomplish.

I’d like you to know that after decades of hiding in the shadows, Canada has since worked long and hard our reputation as a degenerate fascist puppet state.
That you would fail to mention our idiot Justin Trudeau hurts me on a level that I can’t express in mere words. It cuts me deep.

Before the pandemic, experts said the US was the country that was best prepared in the world to handle a pandemic. I think MoA had a post about it. The same is true even of the US military.
