Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

And Then Biden Blew It … Again

In June U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was on a long desired trip to China. Just 24 hours after a somewhat positive statement of the meeting came out Biden blew it by calling Xi Jinping a 'dictator'.

The Chinese government was not amused:

China's foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning called Mr Biden's remarks "extremely absurd and irresponsible". Speaking at a regularly scheduled press conference on Wednesday, she said that the comments were "an open political provocation" that violated diplomatic etiquette.

Yesterday President Xi Jinping of China met U.S. President Joe Biden near San Francisco.

The Chinese spokesperson had set out the agenda:

Hua Chunying 华春莹 @SpokespersonCHN – 11:25 UTC · Nov 16, 2023

President Xi Jinping noted that there are two options for China and the U.S. in the era of global transformations unseen in a century: One is to enhance solidarity and cooperation and join hands to meet global challenges and promote global security and prosperity; …
… and the other is to cling to the zero-sum mentality, provoke rivalry and confrontation, and drive the world toward turmoil and division. The two choices point to two different directions that will decide the future of humanity and Planet Earth.

Xi wanted to chose the first path. But shortly after their meeting Biden walked on the second.

He again blew it:

Remarks by President Biden in a Press Conference | Woodside, CA – Nov 16, 2023 – White House

Q And, Mr. President, after today, would you still refer to President Xi as a “dictator”? This is a term that you used earlier this year.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, look, he is. I mean, he’s a dictator in the sense that he — he is a guy who runs a country that — it’s a communist country that is based on a form of government totally different than ours.

Anyway, we made progress.

The Chinese view certainly differs.

The Democracy Perception Index (pdf) is the world’s largest annual study on how people perceive democracy. In the U.S. 76% believe that 'democracy is important' but only 54% answer yes when asked if their country is democratic. In China the agreeing percentages for the same questions are 88% and 73%.

Antonym, mentioning that Xi would take a Chinese citizen’s “social credit” indicates an understanding of China through the lens of Western propaganda.
This video, by a popular channel that is not known to be friendly to China, should be enlightening on the social credit system.

Don’t trouble yourself educating antonym. He is an RSS fascist troll with a hatred of China that exceeds even his contempt for muslims and those of lower caste-such as ourselves.
Unlike the $10 an hour trolls employed by the National Endowment for Democracy (believe it or not!) he is motivated only by violent and implacable hatred.

“…The country wasn’t born evil. Like individuals it had it’s healthy youth and now it’s an authoritarian corpse as personified by it’s president….” Ahenobarbus@192
The loyalist ‘Tories’, including the Six Nations Iroquois confederacy would differ from you. And they would not be entirely wrong: the powerful forces behind the Independence movement were motivated not by a desire for liberty but by an impatience with the Royal Proclamation of 1763 which was an attempt to restrict the invasion of lands beyond the Alleghenies, and represented a major threat to kland speculators including one G Washington.
Washington would also have been suspicious of British intentions towards slavery, following Lord Mansfield’s Summerset judgement.
Essentially the US ruling class- wealthy and powerful- was determined to maintain its traditional right to legislate for itself, a right which included its refusal to give up its property in stolen land or purchased labour.
That wasn’t the end of it, of course, it was enough to win allies among Britain’s enemies such as France, but far from sufficient to motivate even the most idiotic poor farmer or propertyless American to risk his life in a struggle against British armies-badly led though they tended to be. It became necessary to broaden the aims of the ‘revolution’ into what Paine called Common Sense.
Still, when the dust had settled, the Republic established and independent history begun it was immediately apparent that the interests of the working people were directly opposed to those of their new rulers.

Those who cannot distinguish between the Chinese people and the CPC are blinded by their own “communism”. The Chinese people lived millenia without that Club.
Even inside the CPC many are not happy at all with ‘savior’ Xi Jinping. His habit of throttling Chinese (and foreign) businesses and businessmen who get too independent is killing the Golden Goose that was pulling the ~half the population into middle-class life (without pensions but mortgage on a half build = useless apartment).

Sorry to break it to you b and others but Xi Jinping IS the quintessential “dictator”. He is all about his own position to stay the ultimate boss in the Party, nation and beyond. He treats the Chinese population as a bunch of suspicious pawns. . .

Yes, Blinken sitting next to Biden was protocol but there was a notable nurse/handler with doddering old geezer quality to the image. What it really reminded me of was Grima Wormtongue and King Theoden in the Lord Of The Rings.
Last time Biden called Xi a dictator I figured a set up question like with Stephanopolous when Biden called Putin a killer, intentional attempt to sour a meeting. Biden is not intact but not as broke down as he seems, he could have his own agenda, be his own clique of one, or the last gasp of the neocon clique that includes him, trying to undermine any rapprochement with China. Maybe Biden himself is the one striving for full spectrum war?

“Dictator” and “autocratic” are code words used by the Neocons to denote countries and their leadership that resist US financial colonization. The Chinese fully understand that “dictator” is in all cases a derogatory term and that our diplomacy is clumsy and amateurish. They also understand that any agreements are at best short term and that the US sees China not as a peer, but a country to conquer.

Unless you are a Western media zombie, which there are a lot, you know that the US is currently the face of the Casino House for the global financial world and that the House always wins.
As other commenters as well as me have written, its all about China maintaining sovereign control of finance and not becoming partly pregnant (oxymoron) with current private finance structures more than they must until the new Reserve Currency of the multipolar world is instantiated.
And the China/Russia axis leadership look better and better in comparison every day……its not just the hypocritical projections like dictator but the litany of obvious/provable lies is attempting to be overwhelming but causing more to say, Western leadership is crazy and the folks pulling their strings need to be neutered , even if it causes human extinction.

Keeping the capitalists under control and not letting them suck the blood of the People is not something invented by Xi.
“The present-day capitalist economy in China is a capitalist economy which for the most part is under the control of the People’s Government and which is linked with the state-owned socialist economy in various forms and supervised by the workers. It is not an ordinary but a particular kind of capitalist economy, namely, a state-capitalist economy of a new type. It exists not chiefly to make profits for the capitalists but to meet the needs of the people and the state. True, a share of the profits produced by the workers goes to the capitalists, but that is only a small part, about one quarter, of the total. The remaining three quarters are produced for the workers (in the form of the welfare fund), for the state (in the form of income tax) and for expanding productive capacity (a small part of which produces profits for the capitalists). Therefore, this state-capitalist economy of a new type takes on a socialist character to a very great extent and benefits the workers and the state.”
“The national bourgeoisie at the present stage is of great importance. Imperialism, a most ferocious enemy, is still standing alongside us. China’s modern industry still forms a very small proportion of the national economy. No reliable statistics are available, but it is estimated, on the basis of certain data, that before the War of Resistance Against Japan the value of output of modern industry constituted only about 10 per cent of the total value of output of the national economy. To counter imperialist oppression and to raise her backward economy to a higher level, China must utilize all the factors of urban and rural capitalism that are beneficial and not harmful to the national economy and the people’s livelihood; and we must unite with the national bourgeoisie in common struggle. Our present policy is to regulate capitalism, not to destroy it. But the national bourgeoisie cannot be the leader of the revolution, nor should it have the chief role in state power. The reason it cannot be the leader of the revolution and should not have the chief role in state power is that the social and economic position of the national bourgeoisie determines its weakness; it lacks foresight and sufficient courage and many of its members are afraid of the masses.”

The USA is oligarchic, not democratic, has been that way since 1790.
Mr, Xi cane to power in a regular, constitutional way, which is not what is usually meant by “dictator”.
Mr. Biden is a senile fool who has no manners. But whoever follows him will continue starting new wars, making more ordinary Americans homeless, etc. No matter which political party you vote for, nothing will change. A Mexican-style revolution is more likely than voting in the USA making a difference. 🙁

“ In deference to this persistence, the Chinese came and the meeting turned out a bit of a damp squib anyway. “
He was coming anyway and he was only coming to SF not DC – this was not going to be a traditional State Visit – this was the face off – the look in the eyeballs type – final warning.
It has been long signalled.
Did you read the dinner speech?

He named each of the villains fronts including the cfr.
he referred to ww2 when the Americans bombed Tokyo and then ditched their bombers in China ‘250,000 civilian Chinese were killed by Japanese aggressors in retaliation‘. He says there is plenty of payback available. He didn’t mention Korea or China or Vietnam or the rest of the elephants crowding the room.
The 5 steps, I see them as red lines, starting the first one with the old capo Kissingers who’s visit he took first to tell him to his face, because the Chinese still have respect for the elders, even ones who have been their duplicitous enemies from day one.
“I have respectively met in Beijing with Dr. Henry Kissinger, Mr. Bill Gates, Senator Chuck Schumer and his Senate colleagues, and Governor Gavin Newsom.”
Starting with a face down across the table and then the dinner speech – that is the meat.
Urge all to read it – several times it will be one of the greatest speeches in history, remembered forever. Certainly not a damp squib, It wasn’t written on the fly and he definitely didn’t to turn up in deference. Totally the opposite.

Don’t buy the idea that this was a blunder by Biden.
The meeting was too important.
Perhaps this was a “performance” for both USA and China’s respective domestic audiences.

1. Xi was there for the APEC leader’s summit. Biden went there to meet Xi (okay maybe Biden was there for APEC too…).
Referencing Scorpion:

“[…] the President of the United States flew across his country to meet President Xi, not the other way around.

Yeah sort of 🙂
2. Biden was done with his press conference and on his way out to leave when he stops.
Sputnik describes it from video:

“After Biden stated he would take no more questions he started walking towards the exit but then stopped and announced that he would take another question, “Who can holler the loudest?” the President asked the crowd of supporters.
The reporter, whose name and outlet were not clearly audible in the video, first asked if Biden could share the evidence he had that Hamas hid a headquarters in Al-Shifa hospital, something Biden said was a “fact” earlier in the press conference.
Biden said he was confident in the evidence he saw, but declined to provide it. “No, I can’t tell you. I won’t tell you.”
The same reporter then asked if Biden still calls Xi a “dictator” as he did earlier in the year. Biden confirmed that he still does.
“Well look, he is. I mean he is a dictator in the sense that he is a guy who runs a country that is a communist country that is based on a form of government that is totally different from ours,” Biden stated before leaving the press room.”

3. Lol so I say someone hacked Genocide Joe (a cracker crack!). That’s why he suddenly stopped to take one additional question and answered two only to spew nonsense and an insult.
My admittedly fanciful explanation makes as much or more sense than anything else being said 🙂
“Genocide Joe” got the “remote controlled cockroach” treatment! “Cruise missiles” Trump would be no different.

Unlike you I am specific in my criticism: Xi Jinping and Muhammed are/were the most powerful tools of negative forces. Joe Biden is a class below.
The Chinese and Muslims the biggest victims of the two despots above, the Joe Sixpacks have to bear with Joe B., bad but a lesser evil.

I plead ignorance as regards both China and Russia. Both are very large and old civilization states, with China being much older and larger population-wise. Indeed, I find even the notion of 1.4 billion people being in one country impossible to imagine. I did spend a few months there but came away only with specific, local impressions having essentially gone to just one small town in one province and saw little more than the inside of a hotel room in Beijing along the way.
I think their perspective as a nation and People of 1.4 billion is valuable because it is where the world is headed. China is a few hundred years ahead in many ways (though not, perhaps, ahead in all). Xi touched on this in his after-dinner speech kindly linked by Arch.

We are committed to striving in unity to achieve modernization for all Chinese. A large population is a fundamental aspect of China’s reality. Our achievements, however great, would be very small when divided by 1.4 billion. But a problem, however small, would be huge when multiplied by 1.4 billion. This is a unique challenge for a country of our size. In the meantime, big also means strength. The leadership of the CPC, the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and the endorsement and support of the people are our greatest strengths. China is both a super-large economy and a super-large market. Not long ago the sixth China International Import Expo was held, attracting over 3,400 business exhibitors from 128 countries including the United States. The exhibition area of American companies has been the largest for six consecutive years at the Expo. Modernization for 1.4 billion Chinese is a huge opportunity that China provides to the world.
We are committed to prosperity for all to deliver a better life for each and every Chinese. To eliminate poverty is the millennia-old dream of the Chinese nation, and prosperity for all is the longing of all Chinese. Before I turned 16, I was in a village in northern Shaanxi Province, where I lived and farmed with villagers, and I knew about their worries and needs. Now half a century on, I always feel confident and strong when staying with the people. Serving the people
selflessly and living up to their expectations is my lifelong commitment. When I became General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of the People’s Republic of China, 100 million people were still living below the poverty line set by the United Nations. Thanks to eight years of tenacious efforts, we lifted them all out of poverty. We realized the poverty reduction goal of the U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 10 years ahead of schedule. In the process, over 1,800 CPC members lost their lives in the line of duty.
Our goal is not to have just a few wealthy people, but to realize common prosperity for all. Employment, education, medical services, child care, elderly care, housing, the environment and the like are real issues important to people’s daily life and close to their heart. They are being steadily integrated into our top-level plans for national development, thus ever increasing the sense of fulfillment, happiness and security of our people. We will continue to promote high-quality development and deliver the benefits of modernization to all. This is the CPC’s founding mission and the pledge we have made to the people. It will surely be realized with the support of the people.

Of course just like individuals, every country has its dark side. The Tongs are still around. Major fraud no doubt abounds both in public and private sectors. But his explanation – brief as it is – of the exigencies involved with being so large a population, was very well put in common sense language. And his aspirations, boiler-plate though some might call them (I often do myself) are worthy.
For certain, all major powers learning to get along without getting into zero sum and plundering approaches is a consummation devoutly to be wished.

It should be noted that creepy Blinken has double access to creepy old coot, Biden because Blinken’s wife, Evan Ryan, is White House Cabinet Secretary.
Note that her different surname throws the incurious off track.
She’s basically a babysitter.
More than that, she knows what’s up and no doubt, shares what she knows with Blink.
So Blink is the stepson of Rbt. Maxwell’s atty and trusted friend, Sam Pisar, until death do they part.
R Maxwell’s daughter is the infamous Ghislaine. Other daughter, Isabel developed (stole from MIT grad students) Chiliad software and sold it to the FBI which gave it rave reviews. Collates, gathers and streamlines data, etc.
Sam Pisar was a member of the JFK admin.! Daughter, Leah Pisar was a minder of Bill Clinton in that era.
Weird Shite. These Jewish minders and their history.
And I didn’t mention Epstein until just now.

Thank you for those apposite quotations.
The notion that there was a sudden reversal of course after Mao’s death has been very convenient for capitalists as a justification for ending their mindless and suicidal boycott of Chinese resources, human and otherwise. It allowed them to nourish the wishful thinking that a closer acquaintance with the imperialist world would endear the Peoples Republic’s leadership to the Occident.
Or, in other words, that they could bribe them into becoming willing compradors in another century of humiliation for the masses.
In fat Deng Xiao Ping, like that other darling of the ever optimistic capitalist class, Chou was a lifelong communist and one of the argumentative and inventive marxists who, together with Mao and many others collectively directed the state through the stormiest weather of its voyage towards socialism- a voyage still under weigh which began inthe 1920s.
The nonsense that Xi is a dictator is no more than a projection by fools who cannot remember more than one Chinese name at a time. They have the same problem with Russians.

The lie that the Chinese people are oppressed by evil commies is easily dispelled by entering China as a tourist since China is now open to international tourism.
I live in China and China is the best place for decent people living wanting to live a safe life. I’d renounce My own citizenship if not for the simple fact that 1.4 billion reasons objecting to granting citizenship to large number of foreigners.
Factually.

That’s the same “democracy perception index” where Ukrainians, living in a dictatorship that glorifies Nazis, after a CIAp backed coup, and outlawing most of the opposition parties that represented the majority in the South and East, say that they perceive their country to be democratic…
When we open the PDF, we immediately see the face of Rasmussen, ex-Denmark 1Minister and ex-NATO spokesperson. Do I need to say more? This kind of ranking is just nonsense.
If 54% in USA believe USA is a democracy, that means that 54% are brainwashed by the regime’s propaganda. That’s all. In the same way as happens in the current and temporary UkraNazi regime.
It’s also funny to see people in EUropean countries believing to live in Democracy, when they are in fact vassals of USA, and their governments need to ask permission to the non-elected corrupts in the EU, ECB, and in some cases the IMF too.
That being said. The perception of the Chinese people in this ranking is very interesting. I don’t know if otnisncorrect or not, but I understand b’s point of view.

IMO, China/Chinese know well from the pain of experience that seeking Harmony and once attaining it to maintain it is the primary chore of the polity, that it’s not easy to attain and requires hard work and discipline. Look at all of Xi’s proposals over the past ten years and you’ll see several commonalities that all relate to attaining Harmony. The analysis that the Outlaw US Empire seeks the exact opposite–Chaos–is very well founded. How to reconcile these two opposites must now be seen as impossible with the only way to avoid a clash being the demise of the Chaos Seeker, as it’s not just China that seeks harmony but an additional 6 Billion humans. And there lies the Big Picture Conflict.

@6 robinthehood “Xi is a dictator within the CPC. This is not even disputed in China.”
The Chinese vigorously dispute that characterization.
After all, what is the definition of “dictator”? One thing it certainly is not is the leader of a foreign country “that is based on a form of government totally different than ours”.
That’s just…. bizarre. If we take that definition then the Chinese would be equally entitled to accuse Joe Biden of being a dictator.
So, what is a “dictator”?
To my mind it is a leader who is unincumbered by any other restraints on their exercise of power other than their own self-restraint.
By that definition Xi is nowhere near a “dictator”. Not even close, and he probably has MORE restrainsts on what he can do than Joe Biden does, being as he is surrounded by a bunch of neocon crazies who don’t care a hoot what the American people want or say.
It is just so easy to be trite about these things, but what world leaders say about each other is important. It does matter. And what Biden has now said twice is an appalling breach of diplomatic etiquette from a senile old fool.

Bottom line. The structure of China’s government is not set up for the leader to be a dictator. Biden was stupid to say it, and it causes Biden’s credibility to drop hugely, since it is clearly not true. A committee of leaders rule China with Xi more like a chairman.
Xi is competent. Sadly, our leader Biden is not. A big mistake was made with this remark, as it obviously was made intending to hurt China.

I value prof Mearsheimer for his very disciplined thinking. However it’s annoying to me hear him refer to the West as liberal democracy. He even admits that the politicians in those ”liberal democracies” lie more to their constituencies than in what he calls authoritarian systems and are addicted to war. Maybe in the past, before the collapse of the Soviet Union, Western Europe and the US were sort of liberal in the traditional sense and democratic, but certainly not today. He says that Russia is authoritarian even though they have elections. His theories are pretty tight but I guess liberal democracy vs autocracy dichotomy is an axiom.

Xi didn’t go to the US to talk with Biden and Blinken, but with the real rulers of the US; the Billionaires, the Corporations and the Bankers. Who gave him a standing ovation.

If those Billionaires and co are the real rulers of the US and such Sinophiles to be giving Xi a standing ovation, then they are spectacularly and utterly incompetent to be steering the US into war with China when they actually want friendly relations.
I suspect the Billionaires you mention are merely henchmen for the real power center behind the scenes, who are hostile to China and intent on subjugating it. Xi was there to woo those Billionaires, indirectly dealing a blow to their masters (you don’t have ‘power’ if nobody is willing to do your bidding).
From the looks of it Xi won a decisive battle.

America is not a democracy and never has been. It is a republic. The people elect representatives in their state to the state legislature as well as representatives to the House of Representatives. Those representatives are supposed to then pass laws on behalf of the people. Even the president is not elected by popular vote but by electors (or representatives) from each state based upon the votes in that state.
The best thing about the comment section here is how angry some of the commenters get, descending into name calling whenever someone expresses a different opinion even if its just over something like how economies work. Its comforting to know that human nature will never change and people will always be angry, confrontational and prone to violence. Whether its a unipolar world or a multipolar world, the idea that all humans will live in harmony is counter to the entirety of world history and this blog is a nice microcosm of that reality.
President Putin and President Xi seem to genuinely love their countries and want to do what’s best for their people. But they’re not going to live forever. And the oligarchs will always be there to bribe a president or a party to do what’s best for the oligarchs and not for the people. Right now they control the US. When its profitable for them, they’ll find people in Russia and China to take the money and betray their people too. They probably own many of them already.
Ironically, some of the commenters here eagerly awaiting the harmony of the multipolar world would love to genocide all of the people in Israel, Europe and the US right now. Others want to genocide the Palestinians and all arabs and muslims. Once the bad group is gone then there will be some other group that needs to be removed for the betterment of humanity or maybe just the betterment of another group of people. There’s always someone to blame and hate for whatever problems arise. Its just the way it has always been and its how people are easily manipulated.
The funny part is that the oligarchs who rule the world now just love watching us fight amongst ourselves over things such as religion, race, economics or political systems. As long as we remain at each other’s throats we won’t stop them raping and plundering the world.

Anyone watching the shitshow developing in Myanmar right now?
Coordinated attack on the government military forces by multiple rebel groups.
How co-incidental …

So, what is a “dictator”?

A ruler that has come to power by illegitimate means, serving interests other than his his supposed electorate?

Biden, even if he wanted to, and even if he were mentally stable enough to do so, would not have the courage to change the anti-China trajectory of US foreign policy. If he did, he would be replaced. Calling foreigners with non-white complexions abusive names is standard operating procedure in what passes for US diplomacy.
Nobody seriously expected anything to come of this, and nothing has come of it. Just China calling the US bloff for the nth time and then saying to the rest of the world “Well, we tried, didn’t we, and look what those round-eyes did in return!”

There has to be some sort of a change that caused Xi to go to US to speak directly with whoever runs the US show or their spokesman…..

Noob here.
Saw elsewhere Xi seen at private dinner with, IIRC, principals of Black Rock, Pfizer, and Blackstone (or some such). Some of the heaviest hitters out there on the Western Front, those that control trillions in capital and, perhaps more importantly, narratives of the MSM.

Lol . Don’t forget the other current ‘family’ of the blood responsible for the millions dead and suffering – the Kagans.
It ain’t a conspiracy when it’s a caught red handed fact.
It is definitely not AS because they are not semites but shapeshifters.
Hey it’s early morning I slept well on Xi’s speech , so here a real Conspiracy Theory for breakfast.
Code name Maxwell was Hoch I believe, why he needed to change his name and what he did in the war he never explained. But he was given a state funeral in the Apartheid illegal state wasn’t he ? More?
Nah I think that’s enough CT and off topic enough now for this thread, though I find most topics are connected by the dots of history – might post something on the open topic later.
Have fine day wherever you are barflies. I’m going to start with pot of tea and read Xi’s speech again. Lost most of what I wrote last night by hitting wrong button falling asleep doh, hope others have covered it here.
I particularly enjoyed the line about ‘we been over that wide pacific for 5000 years straight, and here in SF Chinatown for at least 180 years while you lot are just Johnny come lately bit.’ Hmm need to work in a Chinatown reference somehow.

Missing Blackrock, Vanguard, and Cargill, as the corporate representatives.
Dividing up the spoils before the war is finished, (or is it “trying to skin the bear before he is dead?”, or even “trying to get the Panda as a cuddly toy?”)

I don’t think Biden is entirely compos mentis, and having an apparently amicable meeting with Xi and then insulting him is predictable. Biden may even have forgotten the meeting.
