Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

Two Middle East Outlooks

Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor and dimwit, had written a laudation of his own and his bosses foreign policy for the November print edition of Foreign Affairs. The piece was finalized before the war in Palestine had begun.

The Sources of American Power
A Foreign Policy for a Changed World

Excerpts:

Indeed, although the Middle East remains beset with perennial challenges, the region is quieter than it has been for decades.

The progress is fragile, to be sure. But it is also not an accident.

[The president's] approach returns discipline to U.S. policy. It emphasizes deterring aggression, de-escalating conflicts, and integrating the region through joint infrastructure projects and new partnerships, including between Israel and its Arab neighbors. And it is bearing fruit.

This disciplined approach frees up resources for other global priorities, reduces the risk of new Middle Eastern conflicts, and ensures that U.S. interests are protected on a far more sustainable basis. Challenges remain. The Israeli-Palestinian situation is tense, particularly in the West Bank, but in the face of serious frictions, we have de-escalated crises in Gaza and restored direct diplomacy between the parties after years of its absence.

Alastair Crooke, who has personally negotiated prisoner exchanges between Hamas and Israel, has published a rather bleak outlook.

Escalations Cannot Be Stopped – The White House Is Rattled; Escalations Might All Fuse Into ‘One’
The reality of the necessity of war is permeating widely the consciousness of the Arabic and Islamic world.

It is no coincidence that Netanyahu flourished a map of Israel during his General Assembly address last month in which Israel dominated from the River to the Sea – and Palestine (indeed any Palestinian territory) was non-existent.

Tom Friedman in his NYT reflections may fear that just as NATO’s impaired performance in Ukraine has ruptured ‘the NATO myth’, so too the 7 October Israeli military and intelligence collapse and what happens in its wake in Gaza ‘might explode the entire pro-American alliance structure’ in the Middle East.

The confluence of two such humiliations might break the spine of western primacy. This seems to be the gist to Friedman’s analysis. (He likely is correct).

Hamas has succeeded in smashing the Israel deterrence paradigm: They were not afraid, the IDF proved far from invincible, and the Arab street mobilised as never before (confounding western cynics who laugh at the very notion of there being an ‘Arab Street’).

Well, that is where we are – and the White House is rattled.

This is what worries the White House Team. They are deeply unconfident that an Israeli invasion of Gaza will put ‘Humpty’ together again. Rather, they fear that events may go badly for the IDF, and further, that the images relayed across the Middle East of Israel using overwhelming force in a civilian urban setting will revolt the Islamic sphere.

In spite of western scepticism, there are signs that this insurrection in the Arab sphere is different, and resembles more the 1916 Arab Revolt that overthrew the Ottoman Empire. It is taking on a distinct ‘edge’ as both Shi’a and Sunni religious authorities state the duty of Muslims to stand with Palestinians. In other words, as the Israeli polity becomes plainly ‘Prophetical’, so the Islamic mood is turning eschatological, in its turn.

That the White House should be floating kites about ‘moderate’ Arab leaders pressing ‘moderate’ Palestinians to form an Israeli-friendly government in Gaza that would displace Hamas and impose security and order shows just how severed is the West from reality. Recall that Mahmoud Abbas, General Sisi and the King of Jordan (some of the region’s most pliable leaders) pointedly refused even to meet with Biden after the latter’s Israel trip.

The anger across the region is real and threatens ‘moderate’ Arab leaders, whose room for manoeuvre is now circumscribed.

So hotspots are proliferating, as are attacks on U.S. deployments around the region. Some in Washington claim to perceive an Iranian hand, and are hoping to expand a window for war with Iran.

Should Israel enter Gaza (and Israel may decide it has no choice but to launch a ground operation, given the domestic political dynamics and public sentiment), it is likely that Hizbullah will incrementally be drawn further in, leaving the U.S. with the binary option of seeing Israel defeated, or launching a major war in which all the hotspots become fused ‘as one’.

In a sense, the Israeli-Islamic conflict now may only be resolved in this kinetic way. All efforts since 1947 have seen the divide only deepen. The reality of the necessity of war is permeating widely the consciousness of the Arabic and Islamic world.

What could bring the Arab street into the street, and their leaders to take action? The thought they could win.
If idf invades Gaza and that turns disastrous…
Or, of Hizbullah attacks with success…
Or Russia is forced to respond and sinks a carrier…
Or Iran is attacked and gives attackers a bloody nose…
Too early. We haven’t even seen enough Gaza bombing to really motivate the street at all, much less the leaders.
Things are happening in the us street. Oddly, it’s the war monger dems that are most upset by genocide in apartheidStan.

Only the polytheist mindset that thinks that Christ pbuh is a Mitya, an eternal deity existing independent from God, could conceive that a Zionist Messiah story could re-happen.
Why would Jews want to kill a second Messiah in the form of a child in Palestine unless they still believe in re-incarnation?
The Jews of Jesus pbuh time asked him who he was, a re-incarnation of Elijah, or the Messiah pbuh or the last prophet Muhammad saw.
Sp there we have it. Actual proof of why the Chosen people got unchosen.
They tried to kill the first.Messiah pbuh and now believe they have to kill his re-incarnation?
With all due respect brother whatever you’re on, it ain’t dopamine..

@scottindallas; #351:
My bad, I meant to say Jerusalem but ended up saying Bethlehem. My point being as IDF is pounding Gaza, large Israeli cities can be fair game too for the other side. Let them target Haifa, how’s that?
Your point regarding pro-Palestinian demos in France, I haven’t seen any in US MSM.

Just prior to reading your post, I was thinking: “Well, markets are fairly calm – they don’t expect a major escalation.”
One percent stocks down, gold up? You call that ‘big moves’?
If speculators really saw a US-Iran war as imminent, charts would look very different.
(…which doesn’t mean it can’t still happen. Market foresight wrt political events is notoriously bad.)
In the long run that may be right, but the US is definitely not bankrupt yet…
ChrisB | Oct 28 2023 0:36 utc | 272
You haven’t been paying attention, it seems. 😉
US has been (de facto) bankrupt since September 2019. There’s no market for them – if China refuses to buy UST, it’s game over.
The recent high-level talks must have included the issue. Seems that one condition set by BJ is for the US to gtfo of Ukraine.
Wang Yi is currently in Washington – my educated (I hope;-) guess is that once he leaves, we’ll see clear signs US won’t intervene in Near East.
For the rest, I generally agree with you:
IDF (using ‘Israel’ as shorthand is misleading imo, since its political elites are divided) will make ‘minor incursions’ without risking a full ground offensive, while Hezbollah will likewise limit its attacks. An immediate attack by Hezbollah would’ve been extremely risky, not knowing how Tel Aviv would react. Just like Russia, the axis of resistance wants only controlled, manageable escalation imo.

Musk intervention in Gaza via his spy satellites will set a terrible precedence. Surely he will enjoy the thought of it as it will mark another of his favourite experiments. What we see now in Gaza is the ‘future-lab’ – for the evil forces on the planet to carry out their utopian dreams. Not in favour of it by any means.

Here is a comment posted at the Telegram channel of Sputnik International, to a report stating “Israel rejects the call for a ceasefire from the UN General Assembly and intends to destroy Hamas, the Israeli foreign ministry said.”

If this is true, then the Likud is making a mistake. Hamas et.al. need a long battle of attrition. Israel can not afford a 6-24 month hot war.
it’s been my guess from the beginning that both Hamas and Hezbollah have prepared for a very long Leningrad style siege. Hamas and Hezbollah prevail if they continue mount pinprick raids against the IDF for 6-24 months.

“The notion that October 7 was a LIHOP scenario seems now put to rest, as there hasn’t been a consistent or sustained “plan” by either Israel or U.S.”
I think they did let it happen on purpose, and planned to annihilate Gaza as a consequence. It’s just that it didn’t go as planned, Hamas was way more effective that estimated, the dismantling of the “false flag” elements like 40 babies much more effective than thought, and the condemnation of the preparatory bombardments of Gaza must more overbearing that they had expected.
This is similar to how Russia was supposed to have folded under the “sanctions from hell”, but it just didn’t happen, and how the Ukraine military was supposed to tear another hole in the Russian attacks, with lots of aces up their sleeves (biological warfare, nuclear false flags) that were rapidly disabled in the initial phase of the SMO.
The planning was devious and brutal, but reality played out differently.

One thing is certain, the death cultists in Israel’s government did not want the hostages released and saying they had been treated well.
Negociations were on the way all day yesterday until the black out. Or Qatar played again its vicious role in lurring Hamas there would be no attack as the nego was ongoing.
If Qatar was not the pawn of the imperialists it would simply force the departure of the US military from its soil.
The Europeans are muted in a coward and accomplice silence.

In my scanning of media documentaries over the past 20 days I have seen many analyses of the affects of isreal’s bombing of Gazan children.
They ramble on about various effects on emotional development of the child, physical developmental issues, pre-natal trauma, deformity of the child’s mental development over time.
Psychologists come, followed by pseudopsychologists,
Psychiatrists come, followed by neurologists,
Doctors come, followed by councillors …
Each with theories that could conclude what a common farm labourer could conclude.
But I have only one prediction and conclusion that is certain, and only one that the world need heed:

The Palestinian child you bomb today will grow to be the one who bombs you tomorrow …

So when we’re all posting away 20 years from now on ‘b’s blessed blog, and some tower in New York comes tumbling down, remember the seeds that were sown so long ago.

Max Blumenthal called this his most important piece in a while. It does show that “it is complicated”. Israel kills Israelis as a kind of “collateral damage” (ostensibly) to kill terrorists and then shows the scorched bodies to prove Hamas did it. It reminds of the Kasztner case (or whatever the name was of the Nazi collaborator who got promoted to the Israeli cabinet). Not to mention the “collaboration” with the Ukrainian Nazis at the moment.

Indeed, Max Blumenthal‘a article is shocking . The list of eye witness testimony boggles the mind:
IDF Helicopter gunships firing into groups of Israelis
IDF Tanks shelling Israelis hunkered down in their homes
IDF Infantry machine gunning groups of Israelis
It appears that the IDF simply went into spray and pray mode.

The idea of a (nuke-free?) ‘Middle East OSCE’ has been discussed for decades, but never made headway for obvious reasons. China picked it up some years ago iirc (not 100% sure, better double-check that), and if it’s a publicly stated policy goal, we can be sure Beijing is serious about it – not achieving it would mean losing face.
And it may become realistic now: Tel Aviv will soon be facing a dead end – bombarding Gaza is barbarian & turns Israel into Pariah state, while militarily, it achieves nothing. But ‘going in’ would be suicidal. Tel Aviv will need outside intervention to get out of this hole, and the West can’t help. China & Russia can, and they might just be willing to offer Israel security – but that’ll come at a price. Not sure how long it’ll take, but things are in motion.

To this day all western governments ignore the reason for the Hamas’ attack!

Addressing the Islamic world, Erdogan called on Muslims to be active in defending Al-Aqsa. “When Israeli soldiers carelessly pollute the grounds of Al-Aqsa with their combat boots by using simple issues as a pretext and then easily spill blood there, the reason [they are able to do that] is we [Muslims] have not done enough to stake our claim over Jerusalem,” he said;

Hi Susan. Very good post. But please, when you say “our country,” specify which country you are referring to. Please don’t assume that everyone else is either in or from the USA. I think you’d agree that the attitude on the part of Foederatans that the entire world is their country and shares their beliefs and prejudices is part of the problem.

Hi Susan. Very good post. But please, when you say “our country,” specify which country you are referring to. Please don’t assume that everyone else is either in or from the USA. I think you’d agree that the attitude on the part of Foederatans that the entire world is their country and shares their beliefs and prejudices is part of the problem.

Robert Kagan wrote an article in 2014 which is similar to what Jake Sullivan wrote in the article above:

Indeed, Max Blumenthal‘a article is shocking. The list of eye witness testimony boggles the mind:
IDF Helicopter gunships firing into groups of Israelis…

Exile | Oct 28 2023 7:04 utc | 366
I have massive difficulties believing this, and would urge everyone to be cautious.
Such sensational (and falsifiable) claims can serve to discredit any and all questioning of the ‘official version’ of October 7th, including the Kibbuz eye witness (apparently) interviewed on the radio.
Remember: Just because Israel commits war crimes doesn’t mean any accusation is automatically true!

Goooooood morning Palestine.
Effin xmas must have come early- so many new socks !
Of the puppet variety , cough , cough. Marxism as the fallback position? That’s some fall. Lol. Almost as deep as that First Fall they sold for a dozen or so centuries until human populations existence outside of slavery just exploded the chains we were constrained by – like that green monster who expands and bursts his pants.

Well a bucket load of ale mostly, though a little help from my friends does help induce further brain chemistry whilst watching us just barely scrape past the Argies. Who went ahead and only a fortuitous charge down and an equally fortuitous penalty kick miss let England scrape through for a 3rd place win. We took it, but this team is done. Back to the drawing board time. Argies were better team. Extra time would have proved it.
Rumination’s in my comment are based on keeping a frequent eye on various feeds on various platforms in an attempt to judge how close to the wind of the fabled Armageddon we are sailing.
I didn’t start the eschatological meandering b’s O/P did , which has brought a few bugs out of the woodpile, but for sure I can’t resist putting on my sciencey Boots and get Walking, ya know what I mean? Squish squash.

Meanwhile some hundreds thousands of shia in Lebanon and in Syria are helping 2,2 million sunnies in Gaza attcking Israel and trying to relieve pression and threat Israel, but the sunni “militias” in Idlib (Al Nusra and many others) are attacking right now Hezbollah and the syrian troops, meanwhile the jets and the AD of Egypt are protecting the air space of Israel from incoming missiles and drones from Yemen.
What kind of people live in the arab sunni countries?

The vast majority of Muslims are Sunni Muslim, something like 90% of Muslims are Sunni Muslim. You have Egypt sitting there with a population of like 100 million Sunni who will do next to nothing to assist the Palestinians. You have Turkey sitting there with a population of like 80 million Sunni who will do next to nothing to assist the Palestinians. Then you have Saudi Arabia (Sunni) sitting there with all the money in the world, who won’t lift a finger to help the Palestinians (Sunni). Saudi Arabia can buy like 10 times the weapons Israel possesses to supply to Egypt to go and help the Palestinians, but that will never happen. The only Muslims who seriously resist the Israelis for decades now are the Iranians (Shia Muslim), Syria (leadership is some type of Shia Muslim) and Hezbollah (Shia Muslim).
They say that if the Shia Muslims go and free the Palestinians today, and give them back their country of Palestine tomorrow, then the very next day thereafter the Palestinians (Hamas- Sunni) will go to Saudi Arabia to thank the House of Saud for liberating them.
God helps those who help themselves. The Palestinians (Hamas) have to prove themselves worthy of God’s help.

For you Marx wallahs – he was drawn from his Euro education and brought to England to put together the new credo, because Religion couldn’t stand anymore under the strain of uncontrollable Scientific thought , running through society because of the ubiquity of the printing press and self education via libraries.
Marxism was developed in England as much as the Zionism that would be used to win Russia and EurAsia finally after many centuries. The East desired by the West ever since the schism of the post Roman Empire …I know, blah blah, blah .

Marx , overseen by Engels (the producer/director of that production ) the Anti capitalist/ controlled market leg of the ragged trousers that slavery were forced to put on when control from the pulpit was slipping fast.
Btw the Guardian was funded and produced by the industrialists of the Dark Satanic mills owners of Manchester. Where the Peterloo riot and massacre happened. Where they supported the slavery of the US and created the bloody ‘Liberal’ sheepskin to cover their wolf nature.
Anyway back to cultural propagandas – yup the modern icons , if successful they are ALL CREATED.
Don’t forget Mr Zimmerman has gone through various reinventions , including playing a Cowboy role as Billy the Kid with others bred in Hollywood. He ended up with a Nobel prize. I’m sure Marx would have been equally appreciated by the MIC industrialists as Obama was !
Ps. Also used to run into pogues front man McGowan at the barbershop now and then with a posse of youngsters that he was obviously mentoring. – the way he switched from his cut glass public school english to ‘authentic’ Oirish was very impressive.
Almost all popular western cultural iconography is manufactured to the same end and has been for centuries. Usually by choosing them when young and moulding them into lighting conduits to the populace that will be subtly and sometimes not as subtly told what to believe, who to hate and kill and die for.
Very few exceptions exist due to their mass popularity and ability to bypass the controlled channels of dissemination of propaganda.

From Blumenthal’s article:
Among the most gruesome videos of the aftermath of October 7, also published on the Telegram account of South Responders, shows a car full of charred corpses (below) at the entrance of Kibbutz Be’eri. The Israeli government has portrayed these casualties as Israeli victims of sadistic Hamas violence. However, the melted steel body and collapsed roof of the car, and the comprehensively scorched corpses inside, evidence a direct hit from a Hellfire missile.

Well, the ball is in Hezbollah’s court. We will see if they attack Israel in the next few days for crossing their “red line” by entering Gaza. I suppose now, people will be trying to see what has happened afte the smoke clears.
Hamas is saying they succeeded in giving Israel a bloody nose. Israel claims they have not had any casualties. One thing is for sure, someone will have to put up or shut up.

Time for a little game of “cui bono”..
Hamas: need to provoke Israel into atrocities so bad that the world can no longer look away.Has to stay relevant in the media war and not be crowded out by Ukraine.
Palaestinians: deeply divided, not even the West Bank inhabitants revolt for the sake of their own people. Probably afraid to lose the West Bank entirely and without means.
Zionists: seizing the moment with the last chance to profit from US support and before BRICS become a protective power. Emboldened by 70 years of western complicity and Russian strategic weakness. Need to sustain their influence through Netanyahu who needs them to support his power.
Iran: has to a avoid a wider war and tread softly as the US neocons are gunning for a war.
As any current power proxies are the name of the game. Surrounded by US and US proxies and in a deeply defensive position. All possible moves carry heavy consequences.
Lebanon, Jordan, Syria: client states of Iran – if Iran goes, so do they as they lose their weapons supplier. I presume this is what the US counts on when moving against Iran.
No one there likes the Palestinians much, they will be watching the balance of power. No offensive moves to be expected, don’t wait for Steiner to fix things for Gaza. These can move if either Iran is attacked or if IDF screws up bad enough to attract vultures.
Hezbollah: can’t open a second front as they have no way to occupy/hold ground. Golan heights maybe but even that could not be held for long. As a protector of the Shia muslims they would be wise not to get involved too deeply. I would expect them to take opportunistic targets only.
Israel: no civilian movement in sight and lots of repression. Don’t expect anything here on a scale of years. Everybody was in the resistance and against the Nazis. Rumors are the US Jews are turning away in disgust, stopping support and remittances already.
IDF: I expect them to not be able to sustain any longer campaign. The country has no strategic depth, Hamas can not be eradicated ever, support is waning. Led by arrogant irrational psychopaths, they have it coming. Already lost 10% of the Merkavas, low morale and no economy to sustain the manpower. There is no plan other than siege and starve – this can be pulled off for a few weeks. If they screw up enough they can attract vultures on the northern front.
Egypt: similar to Iran in a defensive position. Can’t accept two million refugees so they will hold their border. No reported troop movements interestingly, a little too quiet. Maybe relying on the desert to hold off refugees. They must be in secret conversation with Israel. Client state of the US but fed by Russia. Closing Suez would incur US/EU retaliation and probably Chinese as well. Limited freedom of action here.
EU: toothless and deep in the US rectum, working on their own insignificance. Laughable set of politicians pleading fealty to a dying empire. Will be busy holding off refugees and bribing Turkey to keep their borders closed. Will rely on the US once oil and LNG deliveries dry up, long term US will require the goods for themselves and leave EU and Germany in the lurch.
Turkey: playing all sides and not commiting either way. Trying to establish as a “soft power” Geneva type of place.
Russia: has to juggle security demands but will be happy to arm anyone willing to fight US led powers and trade resources with Iran. A little too busy to open another front but surely watching Syria and Tartus base. Probably fairly happy about the Armenian stupidity, they probably can deal with Azerbaijan better without those fools, also Armenia may be leaning to the US side but it’s defanged.
US: trying to profit from all sides, disunity is the goal as it both protects against muslim unification, Iranian, Russian and Chinese influence. Can’t be seen as morally wrong so will quietly retreat at some point and leave the allies (in this case Israel and Egypt) with the losses while trying to take the pot. Losing the carriers is unlikely as that is too escalatory for the other parties. Cutting oil and LNG deliveries to EU is a welcome side effect. Strategically US is surprisingly weak, all the bases are just indefensible dots in hostile country. If rockets fly, the airlifted AD systems will be overwhelmed quickly. Hard to supply dozens of bases if the roads are littered with IEDs and rockets and drones keep piling in. This will not be sustainable once Iran starts spreading Kornets and Lancets. Imagine the Ukraine drone videos over US barracks.
UN: Apart from Guterres just a paper tiger – why are we even discussing their resolutions. That western rule book has been burnt and defiled like a Swedish Quran.
Tucker Carlson: expect that guy to run as the next Isolationist president. He has conservative support, surprisingly taks sense now and is deeply connected with the Zeitgeist. Once elected, watch him wage wars.
Conclusion:
I don’t expect much movement, as the collective West can’t depose Netanyahu and all calls to tone it down won’t work, most of Gaza will be destroyed. Action is only required once the borders are broken, waiting for the straw that breaks the camel’s back morally is futile. The only dominoes I can see falling is if Iran gets taken out as that would remove the power structure of all client states. Maybe Israel will be pressured to tone it down if oil and LNG stop, that’s a language the west understands. Long term trend is decolonization over something like 50 years, probably through Israel becoming a failed state with all sane ones leaving and no more good options, say goodbye to youthful vibrant rave Israel, say hello to fascist militarist orthodox hellhole for as long time.

Regarding Nato and its one-shot-army status.
We know munitions costs have gone up massively in the west, to the point Stoltenberg and Bauer and other Nato honchos are complaining of wanting more stuff, not increased prices.
Nato is done, in conjunction with decreased LNG supply to Europe, more so. Their ability to support any war is declining like the tail of a cow. Israel will end up very badly, after their Iron Dome becomes soon ineffective and lacks ammo.

NYU law student Ryna Workman was ousted as president of the school’s Student Bar Association and lost a job offer after they wrote a newsletter expressing solidarity with Palestinians. Workman says others are now “afraid to speak up in fear that they might become the next me.”

What is more important than that? Certainly not a fairytale of a resurrected immortality.

My personal take is also that the Abrahamic religions are inaccurate and steer us onto paths to nowhere, however there are kernels of truth within them all. That of course is an opinion many would vehemently disagree with. In the end none of the actors can prove nor disprove religions, we are all free to believe as we choose. Still a false belief system for various reasons is better than atheism.
Even your dream of colonizing the stars, based on some esoteric beliefs will never happen, but why bore you with a philosophy you would be unlikely to embrace. We all find where we need be at the appropriate time and when our minds are appropriately open.

Great insights. “War is a continuation of policy by other means and the means must always include the object in our conception”-Clausiwtz.
The goal of the alliance is to replace the old hegemonic order at least cost. Hence, the brilliant strategy of attrition -Ukraines’s military power destroyed, Nato badly depleted, Ukraine’s economy an albatross for EU. More actions pending.
Turn to the ME-work in progress-US/Israel military power depleting, Abrahamic alliances destroyed, Israel’s economy an albatross for the US. In the meantime, the Muslim bloc and the global south (exception India) coalesce in their condemnation of unmanly behaviour- if the problem is Hamas why not confront them man to man instead of bombing women and children? Sentiments harden, UN GA passes resolution for immediate cessation of hostilites, new opportunities arise and even Turkey as the inheritor of the Ottoman mantle and protector of Muslims looks like joining the Jihad with an assist from the alliance.
Expect sometime soon an aid flotilla with much needed supplies for Gaza – Who would dare stop it? Power is now with the allaince. No wonder the other side is getting hysterical. Major geopolitical victory in the offing and practical demonstration of the new order at work. What not to like?
