Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
October 27, 2023
Two Middle East Outlooks

Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor and dimwit, had written a laudation of his own and his bosses foreign policy for the November print edition of Foreign Affairs. The piece was finalized before the war in Palestine had begun.

The Sources of American Power
A Foreign Policy for a Changed World

Excerpts:

Indeed, although the Middle East remains beset with perennial challenges, the region is quieter than it has been for decades.

The progress is fragile, to be sure. But it is also not an accident.

[The president's] approach returns discipline to U.S. policy. It emphasizes deterring aggression, de-escalating conflicts, and integrating the region through joint infrastructure projects and new partnerships, including between Israel and its Arab neighbors. And it is bearing fruit.

This disciplined approach frees up resources for other global priorities, reduces the risk of new Middle Eastern conflicts, and ensures that U.S. interests are protected on a far more sustainable basis. Challenges remain. The Israeli-Palestinian situation is tense, particularly in the West Bank, but in the face of serious frictions, we have de-escalated crises in Gaza and restored direct diplomacy between the parties after years of its absence.

Alastair Crooke, who has personally negotiated prisoner exchanges between Hamas and Israel, has published a rather bleak outlook.

Escalations Cannot Be Stopped – The White House Is Rattled; Escalations Might All Fuse Into ‘One’
The reality of the necessity of war is permeating widely the consciousness of the Arabic and Islamic world.

It is no coincidence that Netanyahu flourished a map of Israel during his General Assembly address last month in which Israel dominated from the River to the Sea – and Palestine (indeed any Palestinian territory) was non-existent.

Tom Friedman in his NYT reflections may fear that just as NATO’s impaired performance in Ukraine has ruptured ‘the NATO myth’, so too the 7 October Israeli military and intelligence collapse and what happens in its wake in Gaza ‘might explode the entire pro-American alliance structure’ in the Middle East.

The confluence of two such humiliations might break the spine of western primacy. This seems to be the gist to Friedman’s analysis. (He likely is correct).

Hamas has succeeded in smashing the Israel deterrence paradigm: They were not afraid, the IDF proved far from invincible, and the Arab street mobilised as never before (confounding western cynics who laugh at the very notion of there being an ‘Arab Street’).

Well, that is where we are – and the White House is rattled.

This is what worries the White House Team. They are deeply unconfident that an Israeli invasion of Gaza will put ‘Humpty’ together again. Rather, they fear that events may go badly for the IDF, and further, that the images relayed across the Middle East of Israel using overwhelming force in a civilian urban setting will revolt the Islamic sphere.

In spite of western scepticism, there are signs that this insurrection in the Arab sphere is different, and resembles more the 1916 Arab Revolt that overthrew the Ottoman Empire. It is taking on a distinct ‘edge’ as both Shi’a and Sunni religious authorities state the duty of Muslims to stand with Palestinians. In other words, as the Israeli polity becomes plainly ‘Prophetical’, so the Islamic mood is turning eschatological, in its turn.

That the White House should be floating kites about ‘moderate’ Arab leaders pressing ‘moderate’ Palestinians to form an Israeli-friendly government in Gaza that would displace Hamas and impose security and order shows just how severed is the West from reality. Recall that Mahmoud Abbas, General Sisi and the King of Jordan (some of the region’s most pliable leaders) pointedly refused even to meet with Biden after the latter’s Israel trip.

The anger across the region is real and threatens ‘moderate’ Arab leaders, whose room for manoeuvre is now circumscribed.

So hotspots are proliferating, as are attacks on U.S. deployments around the region. Some in Washington claim to perceive an Iranian hand, and are hoping to expand a window for war with Iran.

Should Israel enter Gaza (and Israel may decide it has no choice but to launch a ground operation, given the domestic political dynamics and public sentiment), it is likely that Hizbullah will incrementally be drawn further in, leaving the U.S. with the binary option of seeing Israel defeated, or launching a major war in which all the hotspots become fused ‘as one’.

In a sense, the Israeli-Islamic conflict now may only be resolved in this kinetic way. All efforts since 1947 have seen the divide only deepen. The reality of the necessity of war is permeating widely the consciousness of the Arabic and Islamic world.

Appreciate the suggestion, will check them out. On preliminary search, I will say that I am not totally put off by the fact that they’re Trotskyists, but I wouldn’t be too ecstatic if they worked any of the kookier shit into the program.
I’ve really liked the Monthly Review folks for contemporary education. Lots of the stuff they put out is must-read imo.

Problem with U.S. direct involvement is despite the powers that be – political, corporate media, financial – that support Israel’s tactics, there is clearly widespread opposition. It would be hard to estimate the numbers but it’s clearly sufficient for unrest within the empire. Even opinion polls show that it would be far larger right off the bat than the numbers that initially rose up against the Iraq War.

Posted by: sln2002 | Oct 28 2023 2:09 utc | 306

I’ve always been disdainful of the concept of res ipsa loquitur as employed in the legal world as it is a bogus appeal to a dead requisite for judicial economy, and it seems I feel the same about the phrase used in almost any other context. The fate of humankind lies in how we treat one another and grow as a unified entity. I don’t think it’s wildly far flung to imply that if large swaths of humankind remain powerless to stop another iteration in a long list of historical holocausts, then we might as well not have developed enough at all to save ourselves from any kind of dire threat.

You might check out some of the Communist or Socialist Parties. They are generally good at offering classes on the basics of Marxism. You need a good foundation in the Basics, some Philosophy and economics also help, but you don’t need a degree in Marxism to learn about Marxism.
Even if you had one what the hell would you do with it? Your Marxist degree and 10 bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Star Bucks’. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, there is no demand for Marxist educators unless you are a phony like Slavoj Žižek, who corrupts Marxism for the ruling class.
Here is the best plan, go to a Socialist or Communist Party, see what they have to offer in the way of Marxist training, get to know the instructors, and let one or more be your mentor. In a few years, if you are serious, you will be teaching newbies Marxist yourself.

The cause of all the problem we have between us is We: Homo sapiens. All the religions try to make the human conscious about the spirit, the life that is our self-identity. God makes their thoughts to be free, that is we are Free: if God makes us necesarios, He had make us determinados, but are contingentes, possible: It’s a good paradox: God wants to be Free all His creatures because it is bad mood to thing they are not free God

look, if there’s natural gas off the coast of Gaza, Israel doesn’t need Gaza or to make war to access that. To suggest that’s a benefit of this fight is delusional. Gaza doesn’t control it’s waters, Israel does. It’s beachfront property, ethnic cleansing they want, as punishment/first step of the final solution.

@14:
All the instances you cite were prior to the introduction of the Wireless Internet SmartPhone (WISP). One of the unforeseen effects of the WISP is *resonance*. Even a slight ripple of dissent is amplified by the resonant nature of the WISP. For the first time,EVER, the youth in Gaza know the whole world is watching, and they are watching back. Now, extend that from the youth in Gaza to youth throughout the Muslim world; they know the US lost in A-stan, they see it losing in Ukraine, they see Israel surprised and humiliated by Hamas, and they see it in *realtime*, not a day later in a newscast or a week later in a magazine.
Do you not understand how this makes the entire fight more involving to those youth thousands of miles away? They are participating in it, and they are getting caught up in it. That is why the chance of the powderkeg exploding is worse than ever.

Acco 20 and others from previous thread; THERE IS NO TWO STATE SOLUTION; NONE. It’s a Western Delusion. Palestinians, Muslims are done with the idea, Israel has encroached too much for there to be a Palestinian state; only one state with equal rights for all. Ironically, a one state with fully property rights might well see Palestinians sell their homes to rabid Zionists and take their proceeds and move to Europe or the US. But try to take the land, they dig in and fight. That’s the tragedy, the Zionists lust for the land has made them lose all sense of justice and fairness; they just want to take. Ironically that’s cost much more than buying them out, an road never taken.

High time the zionist worshipping Modi regime was taught that its craven love affair for the racist apartheid colonial zionist settler entity in Occupied Palestine comes with costs.
India has a long history of using “ex” military personnel as spies and saboteurs.  One of them, also an “ex” naval officer, Kulbhushan Jadhav, is right now on death row as a spy and saboteur in Pakistan.
Death is far too easy for these vermin, however. Far better to sentence them to hard labour on Qatari construction projects for life, with solitary confinement in cells without fans or air conditioning when they are not actually labouring.

Lebanon is a bigger version of Gaza.
Just boiling at lower temperature.
With some anesthetic in the water.
The “border fences” are economic.
Their ports are already wrecked.
Soon like Gaza their airports too.
A government mined with subversives.
American influence exploiting every ethno-religious crack.
Their Army a Gelded, Gilded horse good for nothing more than decoration.
Their refugee camps overflowing with angry young men who would take any side, embrace any ideology for some relief from the hell they live in.
The only thing good remaining in Lebanon ios Hezbollah and the Shiite community and their allies.
As for the rest?
Pull it!
Goodness knows if they don’t do it themselves the Americans will eventually.
Might as well light the fuse themselves …

They would literally bulk-erase entire populations for the minor convenience of not having you spoil the view.
That, judging by history, is “benefit” enough.

An example of critical thinking…
Little do the IDF generals or Bibi realize that in the event of an IDF full blown invasion of Gaza, and the 25,000 dead Palestinian civilians that this will entail, that all bets are off, the law of cascading events will then take place and the US carriers deterrence will not and can deter an entire Arab Revolt like 1916.
– No one can predict what events that IDF invasion action will trigger…….is it…..heavy attacks on US bases in Iraq and the illegal bases in Syria; US counter attacks on Syrian bases and joint Syrian – Russian bases; Turkish and Egyptian attacks on Israel in support of the Palestinians; Iranian attacks on IDF and US bases; US attacks on Iranian oil fields; Chinese Navy attacks on US carrier based aircraft attacking Iran; Russian, Syrian and Iranian targeting of the US carriers; Iranian use of ballistic missiles to attack Tel Aviv and Haifa…..the list goes on and on…and I did not even mention the Hezbollah intervention with missile forces and infantry………unintended consequences of the mini-world war brought to you by the failure to implement UN resolutions 181 and 242, and IDF blood lust and US blunders……..
May you live in interesting times……but not this interesting……..

To which I add the following….
I am of the opinion, based upon HAMAS use of Kornet ATGMs to immobilize the IDF today, that this operation was coordinated between HAMAS, Hezbollah, Iran, Russia, and China.
The trigger of course, was Israeli storming of the Aqsa Mosque, and Netanhu’s map showing obliteration of the Palestinian state.
The timing was dictated by the level of war munition stocks in the hands of NATO/Israel, currently very low..
As mentioned numerous times by Big Serge, Simplicius, and Schryver, NATO is a one shot military…
That is, it has sufficient munitions for a short term, engagement after which it’s basically out of ammo. apparently, this also goes for Israel, currently….
Because…
The US took ~300,000 155mm shells from Israel to send to Ukraine to keep the Ukrainian offensive going… ammo now not available to support a ground invasion of Gaza..
Bombs aplenty they still have… an estimated 30 days worth… after which they are out…
All the posturing… is for the purpose of buying time to scrounge up bombs and shells…
For 4 fronts…. Ukraine… Israel…. Korea… Taiwan…
With Ukraine alone needing more than all of NATO can produce… and.. everything it had/has…
SO….
Taiwan has just been told that promised gear will not be forth coming…
Korea has been stripped to keep Ukraine going..
Israel likely has been told the cupboard is bare..
Ukraine has been cut off.. The Russians keep blowing up their ammo dumps…
Evergreen cancelled shipments to Israel…
LNG tankers are transiting the area empty to avoid paying War Insurance Surcharges… including the Suez Canal… Which means LNG ships will not travel to the EU via the Red Sea/Suez route going forward…
Chevron shut down the offshore gas field supplying 70% of Israel’s electricity.
Tourism and Diamond cutting are 40% of Israel’s forex trade exports..
This means long term > 30 days… Israel will be out of power, lose a big chunk of it’s export earnings, and mostly be out of ammo…
If KSA/GCC/Qatar deny NATO use of their bases, copying Iraq/Syria/Pakistan/Jordan/Egypt… The USN will be down to what it’s accompanying supply ships have brought…
This does not a long war against Iran permit…

With each passing hour it becomes more apparent that Hezbollah hates the Sunnis of Gaza more than it hates Israel.
Posted by: malenkov | Oct 28 2023 1:01 utc | 290
How so? They’ve killed at least 17 Zionist occupiers already, taken out a whole range of surveillance and monitoring equipment, forced colonists out of the border settlements.
That alone is more than anyone the world over has done.
I see a clear stealth approach to “blinding” isreal’s monitoring at the edges …
The crude analogy is a man throwing pebbles to keep a tiger away while reaching for a rock …
Gotta keep an eye on those carrier groups …

One of the tactics of Hezbollah is to make sure their positions are never known.
They have a system of moving into positions undetected, laying down automated rocket and missile launchers and moving to concealed, randomized positions to avoid detection.
It’s a stealth strategy evolved to deal with an enemy that has superior monitoring capabilities.
It takes them time to prepare their positions on this basis, but once they’re up and running, all hell breaks loose. What they absolutely will not do is fire from obvious, visible positions that can be easily predicted or inferred.
That’s the lesson of 2006 and the skirmishes that followed later.

The Communist Manifesto A Graphic Novel, drawn by englander cartoonist Martin Rowson where he boils Marx’s and Engel’s thoughts down to bare essentials is a good place for someone wishing to learn more about marxist thought and tactics to start.
There is a copy in .CBR format right here
A free .CBR app Called Comic Rack may be found here
Of some interest to fellow barflies is the part of Rowson’s introduction which says:
“Marx often propped up the bar of The Pindar of Wakefield in King’s Cross. Later barflies in the same pub now renamed The Water Rats, have included Lenin, Bob Dylan, The Pogues and Oasis the last three of whom all played their first London gigs there.”

Hezbollah and Hamas are both playing the long game, it’s not showy and doesn’t make a great Hollywood movie, because the entire tactic is a slow grinding war of attrition that plays out over several months or even years. Israel simply doesn’t have the military resources to compete a mass extermination and expulsion of the Gaza population before world opinion solidifies against Israel and other Middle Eastern countries go to war with Israel to protect the Palestinians, which would effectively trigger World War 3.

Long War favors ?
George,
Your analysis is correct. NATO and the IDF are set up for a short and very intense battle using staggering amounts of ordnance in a few days.
Hence the calls for ceasefire.
The trick will be for Hamas et.al. to keep up the fighting without refusing the ceasefire.

Dr. George @331–
Yes, it’s a logistics war, as they all tend to become, but this one has begun in that manner, happenstance or not. I’ve already written about the huge financial/economic costs Occupied Palestine and its allies will incur. Hubris is no substitute for ammo as many are learning. What’s vitally important now is for the Resistance not to get smug and act rashly. As in Ukraine, let the Nazis kill themselves off trying to advance in the killing fields they devised. Because the Zionists and allies lack the industrial plant required for such wars, there’s a siege being applied that doesn’t require the force of arm, thus revealing the spectacular inability of the Neocons to plan.

Another potential reason for Hezbollah delaying an all out “Hollywood Blockbuster” attack on isreal:
It’s possible they may have been counseled to wait for all the UN attempts to achieve a ceasefire to conclude before taking the risk of waging war against the combined forces of Zionism and it’s American Military backers.
Seems quite reasonable given the context.

Thanks again, surferket for posting at | Oct 28 2023 2:28 utc | 308 the UN General Assembly vote on Jordan’s ceasefire resolution, which passed. Heres’s a bit more from Consortium News:

Reporting from the U.N. News website:
The [Jordanian] resolution calls for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce”, and demands all parties comply with international humanitarian law and “continuous, sufficient and unhindered” provision of essential supplies and services into the Gaza Strip.
It also calls for the “immediate and unconditional release” of all civilians held captive as well as demanding their safety, well-being and humane treatment in compliance with international law. The resolution does not mention Hamas or the events of Oct.

This was followed by a speech from the Israeli Ambassador to the UN. Al Jazeera has reported intense night bombardment around the main hospital in Gaza.

If it goes on for long, it will depend a lot on who else comes in and how.
Otherwise I agree with Exile & Karlof1.

Some will call it a rant; some will call it brilliant; some will not bother reading it. “Is Hamas a Radical Palestinian Group?” invokes some of the motifs I’ve employed over the last 48 hours. Some will say I’m preaching to the choir. Click the link, read the short editorial and decide for yourselves where it belongs. Of course, I would like people–particularly those within the Outlaw US Empire–to say Yeah, you’re right; I’m going to share this with my friends and family and explain to them why. Younger generations will probably be ignorant of the comparisons; but that’s not their fault nor mine.

October 7 testimonies reveal Israel’s military ‘shelling’ Israeli citizens with tanks, missiles

Israel’s military received orders to shell Israeli homes and even their own bases as they were overwhelmed by Hamas militants on October 7. How many Israeli citizens said to have been “burned alive” were actually killed by friendly fire?
Several new testimonies by Israeli witnesses to the October 7 Hamas surprise attack on southern Israel adds to growing evidence that the Israeli military killed its own citizens as they fought to neutralize Palestinian gunmen.
Tuval Escapa, a member of the security team for Kibbutz Be’eri, set up a hotline to coordinate between kibbutz residents and the Israeli army. He told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that as desperation began to set in, “the commanders in the field made difficult decisions – including shelling houses on their occupants in order to eliminate the terrorists along with the hostages.”
A separate report published in Haaretz noted that the Israeli military was “compelled to request an aerial strike” against its own facility inside the Erez Crossing to Gaza “in order to repulse the terrorists” who had seized control. That base was filled with Israeli Civil Administration officers and soldiers at the time.
These reports indicate that orders came down from the military’s high command to attack homes and and other areas inside Israel, even at the cost of many Israeli lives.

Israeli Tanks Exchange Fire With Hamas Inside Gaza, Small Arms Clashes Heard, As Offensive Expands
the quote

Update(1605ET): It has become clear that the IDF has entered its next phase of battle operations, meaning a full ground assault, as heavy aerial bombardment continues. But Israeli officials in the last hours have dubbed this another “expanded” raid. The Biden White House is now making a show of wanting a more ‘humanitarian’ approach and has asked Israel to ensure only “surgical” strikes, and to allow the Strip access to aid.
There’s emerging evidence of tank fire and small arms fire at the border, after the IDF confirmed that ground forces are entering the next phase of their operations. The Times Of Israel in a breaking update is reporting, “Palestinians claim Israeli tanks exchanging fire with gunmen inside Gaza.” Separately, other regional analysts reporting, “Anti-tank missiles have been fired at Israeli forces that entered Gaza.”
Hamas leadership has responded with a “call to arms” for Gaza and the West Bank. There have since been reports of large overnight protests by Palestinians in the territories. The fate of the over 220 Israeli and foreign hostages hangs in the balance, and reports suggest the US is still seeking to keep the negotiating process going even as Israel invades.

Peter AU, the Academic Left are NOT anywhere close to elites. And, the way to kill finance is with progressive income taxes; not sure if you understand it, and I’m sure you think that’s problematic, but that’s what changed in 1981; the Reagan/Thatcher ending of the progressive era, that lead to off-shoring of production, and turning US/UK into financial economies rather than Capital intensive economies. The alternative to progressive income taxes (which encourage reinvestment to avoid that progressive tax threshold) is sales and property taxes which tax reinvestment and capital intensive (industry and manufacturing) production. The execs before 1981 couldn’t pay themselves anymore without paying 70% tax rates or higher; and any benefits had to be given to the rest of the work force; this is where health insurance, retraining, company cars and other benefits came from. I’m 100% correct and am happy to further explain it to anyone who doesn’t understand

Debsisdead@334….so, over at Kings Cross (talk about bloody imagery) Lenin hung out there, Marx hung out there, if memory serves he’s buried there also……and the Russians wonder how they got so fucked by the Brits. Steady as she goes.

Oriental Voice 174; dude, Bethlehem is a Palestinian city, your calls to bomb it are confused. I’m working through this from behind. I agree with what Finklestein said, Israel is scared to invade; the US is there to “hold them back” like a guy “wanting” to fight, but his friends block him. It’s a show like with Lebanon, the invade, take pictures of their might, and get out; then declare victory the next morning. I think China’s rejection of the UN vote was big. I think the US is scared too. I think this all goes back in the bottle, but the fault lines have shifted, and the world will never be the same. China doesn’t want confrontation, and the US can’t afford to project power without compromising their real core security posture. Ukraine is stable, Russia doesn’t want to take Western Ukraine, they’re not that stupid/ambitious. The world is gonna weigh in on the peace process and the US will be forced to take a seat along side the rest of the world. Israel overplayed it’s hand.
Despite being a Texan, I’m a rugby player, I played Flyhalf for nearly a dozen years. I’d have outside centers who’d squawk and beg for the ball, I could see they had the center and wing crashing on him and skipping him would be the better play; but a flyhalf knows, the best way to shut up a whining center is to give him the ball; let him get leveled; and then you skip him. Israel just got the “buddy pass” now they’re gonna get skipped.

Here is a comment posted at the Telegram channel of Sputnik International, to a report stating “Israel rejects the call for a ceasefire from the UN General Assembly and intends to destroy Hamas, the Israeli foreign ministry said.”
———–
The UNGA must revisit and annul Resolution 181 that created Israel (on two-thirds of historic Palestine) because the stated rights of Palestinians have not and can never be expected to be met as long as Palestine is occupied by a satanic force. Resolution 181 was passed in a postwar state of confusion and in light of the carefully manufactured lie of the Holocaust (see codoh.com for proof). Other populations have been transferred peacefully after wars. After the military defeat of Israel the Jews except for those that are deemed by Palestine to be outside the ideology of satanism should be taken back to wherever they came from or any place of their choice that is willing to take them.
Russia under Putin has taken steps to propagate the Holocaust lie for reasons of state, for example sealing again the details of Auschwitz deaths that had been released under Yeltsin. Russian sacrifices against Germany in WW2 have been deliberately used by Putin as a prop for national solidarity. For this the untruthful picture of Germany and Hitler as maximally evil was deemed necessary. The Russian spirit can do better without this lie. The coming post-Judaic order needs a clean space, free from the machinations of the People of the Lie.
