Daniel Noboa, heir to banana fortune, wins Ecuador’s presidential runoff election
Updated 5:37 AM CEST, October 16, 2023

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Daniel Noboa, an inexperienced politician and an heir to a fortune built on the banana trade, won Ecuador’s presidential runoff election Sunday held amid unprecedented violence that even claimed the life of a candidate.
With more than 97% of the votes counted, electoral officials said Noboa had 52.1%, compared to 47.9% for Luisa González, a leftist lawyer and ally of exiled former President Rafael Correa. González conceded defeat during a speech before supporters in which she also urged Noboa to fulfill his campaign promises.
Noboa, 35, will lead the South American country during a period that drug trafficking-related violence has left Ecuadorians wondering when, not if, they will be victims. Their uneasiness has prompted them to continuously watch their backs and limit how often they leave home.
After results showed him victorious, Noboa thanked Ecuadorians for believing in “a new political project, a young political project, an improbable* political project.”

Yeah, right! Very improbable.

*improbable; adjective
— Unlikely to take place or be true.
— Not probable; unlikely to be true; not to be expected under the circumstances or in the usual course of events.
— Not likely to be true.

Those guys and girls don’t stop for a break!
The Caravans they run moves on daily!
Ah to be alive when such giants of humanity stride and toil to raise all of it!
No wonder the Old Top Dogs and their mongrel packs of nafo bots keep barking till they are froathing at the mouth, MAD – attacking innocent civilians all over the world.
One can only pray for justice to be delivered upon them, theirs and their blood soaked wealth.
‘ 🇷🇺🇨🇳 On October 16, Beijing hosted talks between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi.
✔️ The Ministers praised the positive dynamic of Russian-Chinese comprehensive interaction, had a detailed discussion of issues on the bilateral agenda, including contacts at the highest and high levels with a focus on the preparation for the Russian President’s participation in the Third Belt and Road Forum, as well as cooperation between Moscow and Beijing on aligning the development of the Eurasian Economic Union and China’s Belt and Road initiative.
✔️ The meeting participants underscored the importance of strengthening close coordination between Russia and China on the global stage, including in the UN and its Security Council, as well as the #SCO, the #G20, #APEC and other mechanisms and forums. They also reaffirmed mutual intention to improve contacts within #BRICS in the context of Russia’s chairmanship of the group in 2024.
✔️ The Ministers also exchanged opinions on a wide range of international and regional issues, including the sharply aggravated situation in the Middle East. They had a detailed discussion about security in the Asia-Pacific region in the context of maintaining stability on the Korean Peninsula and preventing the undermining of the ASEAN-centric security structure.
✔️ Sergey Lavrov and Wang Yi also discussed the Ukrainian crisis, including the efforts to settle it through political and diplomatic means.
✔️ They noted with satisfaction that their positions were close or similar on all issues discussed.
✔️ The talks were held in traditionally trust-based and constructive atmosphere.

Why people migrate is an interesting question. But once they’re here, they are here. Consider the following scenario.
If I were an immigrant, I would try to get into politics, become Congressman for one of the two traditional parties, and learn the ropes of how politics works in my new country.
Once I know how politics works, start up my own party – neither Republican or Democrat, but immigrant. And whenever congress is deadlocked, whenever R. or D. are a few votes short, sell my votes to the highest bidder. The party does not have to be big – if R. or D. are one vote short, I’m in business.
I’m not saying this scenario is going to happen. I’m saying immigration in a democracy is not the same as immigration in a one-party state.

How do these monthly measurements account for enormous amounts of exploding ordnance, regular use of massive thermobaric flamethrower missiles, and massive forest fires? Or burning down half an island or however much or little it was?
@ Sunny Runny Burger | Oct 16 2023 1:38 utc | 91

You ask good questions, but none of them cast valid aspersions on the validity of NASA-GISS’s global monthly temperature database. Reasonable people are capable of recognizing that nothing is more precious to science than valid data. Your might ridiculously imply that people devote their careers to messing up the data. Not at all: the folks who curate this data have taken all precautions to safeguard it. If you can’t grant that much, you have no respect for scientists.
Military and aviation emissions have, all along, been deliberately ignored by the IPCC — because USA has dominiated, and USA didn’t want those things scrutinized. There’s essentially no way to estimate military emissions, because there’s zero cooperation from any military; but there’s no doubt that tons and tons of exploding ordnance has a huge carbon footprint.
The best work I’ve seen on this vital question is Brown University’s Cost of War Project.

Thank you, Peter. I do not disagree. I’ve just spent the morning over on the Palestine thread having a look at the video many were recommending. I put up a comment trying to see the video through Israeli citizens’ eyes, as it was addressed to them. (I had reservations about the video and expressed those there.) I’d agree that reconciliation and a one state solution is probably not possible at present.
Any solution has to be by mutual agreement. The manner in which Russia has put citizens first both in its own country and in dealings with others gives me hope that the process they offer to mediate is best, with a single state situation much, much further down the road and only ultimately realizable when both parties are ready for it.

Just to add to my comment above – I do not think these are completely different people, Peter. Perhaps reconciliation under favorable circumstances will take long, but perhaps not. The world is fast becoming a different place so I’m a bit more optimistic on that score. In particular, nations are reassessing alignments, people are talking to one another; all of that is good.

News is US soldiers don’t want to die fighting for Israel.
Colombia just expelled Israeli ambassador. Warns its prepared to break out diplomatic relations.
Janet Yallen believes the US can afford to support 2 wars, forgets that it can’t afford to be caught in one.
US has increased about 100 aircrafts to the region including A10s and is committing 2000 ground troops in Israel.
Iran warns that the axis of resistance may launch pre emptive strikes.
In order to stay relevant and since being told it’s not a good time for him to visit Israel, I wonder if Zelensky might offer part of Ukraine as a new Palestine….?

Malcolm X’s famous quote applies today:
The press is so powerful in its image-making role, it can make the criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. This is the press, an irresponsible press. It will make the criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.

“On October 12th, the Strategic Posture Commission released its long-awaited report on U.S. nuclear policy and strategic stability. The 12-member Commission was hand-picked by Congress in 2022 to conduct a threat assessment, consider alterations to U.S. force posture, and provide recommendations.”
https://fas.org/publication/strategic-posture-commission-report-calls-for-broad-nuclear-buildup/
So when all the other stuff might be over for the moment such a build-up will possibly be manifest for decades. Thats when our real problems will start
(Not intending to mitigate anything now just stressing some geopolitical truisms.)

Democracy is voters choosing government. Immigration is government choosing voters.

Western democracy is choosing from the list of acceptable candidates provided by the oligarchy. Legal immigration is the oligarchy choosing voters (usually with a multi-year delay), illegal immigration is the oligarchy choosing quasi-slaves to keep the working class poor and exploitable.
There fixed it for you.

(I couldn’t bring myself to read this but an analysis on CBC News website reads, “Canadian politicians are starting to grapple with the ramifications of a Israel-Hamas war”. Good to know.)
Just to inform the bar, today is the start of CARICOM-in-Canada meetings. A first, I think.

I was in the library and I picked up this book, which I skim-read, a depressing experience, but I feel it has relevance:
Casino – A Metaphor for the Corruption of the USA?
Nicholas Pileggi’s book Casino, later made into a powerful film by Martin Scorsese, seems on re-reading to be a metaphor for the corruption of the US Empire of gangsterism we are seeing now.
Casino centres around childhood friends Frank ‘Lefty’ Rosenthal, psychopathic Antony ‘the Ant’ Spilotro, and Lefty’s showgirl wife Geri, as Rosenthal rises to become a major personality in Las Vegas. Rosenthal’s financial and managerial skills boost the casinos’ takings dramatically, making him the mob’s equivalent of a pop star.
Vegas itself is a greed-ridden, gaudy, environmental disaster in the middle of the desert. While theoretically, Jewish Rosenthal cannot be a member of the mafia (or ‘outfit’ as it is referred to in the book), he clearly is, like Meyer Lansky before him, having access to the top gangsters at will. Supposedly wives, children, and civilians should not be attacked, but this “Rules-Based Order” is ignored. A woman who was suing the casino, Tamara Rand, is murdered in her kitchen to stop the courts getting hold of incriminating documents; one of Geri’s former boyfriends, another ‘civilian’ is shot in the street, after she goes to see him a few times.
Nothing except money and violence seem to be drivers of this society. There’s no art, culture, education, social responsibility. Sport seems only to matter where it centres around gambling – no-one seems to care or appreciate the sportsmen involved. Early on someone jokes that a prominent bookmaker doesn’t even know who Joe DiMaggio is.
Friendship and loyalty are just words: the book opens with a car-bomb attempt on Lefty’s life. Pileggi does not definitively say who did it, but points the finger at Spilotro (who is having an affair with Lefty’s wife) or another boss, Frank Balistrieri, who supposedly was friendly with Rosenthal, but now views him as a liability. As law-enforcement builds cases against various gangsters, they are pre-emptively whacked, in case they ‘rat out’ to avoid long jail sentences.
It is a profoundly depressing book, but it seems that Las Vegas is not an aberration, but a signal as to what the whole of the USA would become: a gangster state.

Hello fellow Canadians
What do you think about Pierre Poilièvre ? French name, Anglophone speaks French nicely.
My friend sent me a video with him, and I thought no way this isn’t staged. But please tell me your opinions.
Unfortunately she pasted the video to me, but it’s one where he’s answering questions while eating an apple.
It reminded me of Bugs Bunny and his supreme WIT.
is Poilièvre for real ?

Just the tip of the iceberg via msm. Nixon Kissinger plans for the petrodollar began around the time the US decided to go ahead with the Prudhoe bay oil.

Oil crisis and authorization act
Main articles: 1973 oil crisis and Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act
On October 17, 1973, the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries announced an oil embargo against the United States in retaliation for its support of Israel during the Yom Kippur War. Because the United States imported approximately 35 percent of its oil from foreign sources,[73] the embargo had a major effect. The price of gasoline shot upward, gasoline shortages were common, and rationing was considered. Most Americans began demanding a solution to the problem, and President Richard Nixon began lobbying for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline as at least a part of the answer.
Nixon supported the pipeline project even before the oil crisis. On September 10, 1973, he released a message stating that the pipeline was his priority for the remainder of the Congressional session that year.[74] On November 8, after the embargo had been in place for three weeks, he reaffirmed that statement. Members of Congress, under pressure from their constituents, created the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act, which removed all legal barriers from construction of the pipeline, provided financial incentives, and granted a right-of-way for its construction. The act was drafted, rushed through committee, and approved by the House on November 12, 1973, by a vote of 361–14–60. The next day, the Senate passed it, 80–5–15.[75] Nixon signed it into law on November 16, and a federal right-of-way for the pipeline and transportation highway was granted on January 3, 1974.[76] The deal was signed by the oil companies on January 23, allowing work to start.[77]t

The New Yorker interview with Jake Sullivan – https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/10/16/trial-by-combat – shows the utterly limited pool of simplistic sophists with no real experience of the world that are driving US foreign policy. His progression within the utterly controlled establishment educational, legal and political groupthink bubble:
Yale – CFR internship – Rhodes Scholar at Oxford for his Masters – Yale Law – Supreme Court clerkship – aide to Amy Klobuchar – aide to Hillary Clinton (he did “everything for her” and visited 112 countries with her; classic climbing brown-noser) – adviser to VP Biden – Clinton campaign adviser – Think tank – National Security Advisor
All by 44 years old, starting near the top of the greasy pole rather than having to climb it. He has zero experience of doing anything except legal clerking, and political advising. His wife is a near mirror image, Yale – Yale Law School – Law clerk – Political adviser – US Navy intelligence officer.
Not surprising that he was part of the team that f’d up the Afghanistan withdrawal. To such people everything is about words and messages, they have never been involved in the real nitty gritty of getting things done. The same as Blinken. Sullivan’s statements about world events in the article show an incredibly simplistic view of the world with no real nuance or actual fact-related validation, reminds me of one of Condoleezza Rice’s recent speeches.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dF7uuxRliBU
These people all remind me of very clever, but very ignorant children who have no experience of the complexities, messiness of the real world nor the extended periods of hard work and focus required to get things done. They flit from one thing to another like a Moth to different lights.
Contrast them to Putin, Lavrov, Xi and all of the leadership of Russia, China and Iran – all incredibly experienced individuals with well rounded educations and a readiness to understand others’ points of view.

is Poilièvre for real ?

Yeah, a real right-wing nut job who will happily slash taxes for his buddies, “cut red tape” i.e. remove many much needed regulations that get in the way of profiteering, do nothing about the insane levels of mass immigration (cheap labour for his extractive capitalist buddies), drive “right to work” i.e. try to destroy the remaining unions, slash “waste” i.e. any public spending that benefits the poor and middle class, push the Carbon Capture and Storage bullshit boondoggle, bought and paid for by the fossil fuel lobby, push full on Axis of Evil BS about Russia, China and Iran.
He is also very mealy-mouthed on limiting abortion rights, covering up the possibility of a free vote in his Caucus leading to actual legislation.
Any positives? Against the COVID vaccine mandate and believes in basic biological science.
Yeah, a complete Albertan right-wing whack job. The greatest crime that Trudeau and his NDP buddy may commit against Canada may be delivering it to little “PP” by not providing any real alternative.
