Thanks Peter AU1 – I was under the impression that the Torah was composed of the first 5 books of the Bible (Genesis to Deuteronomy) so Samuel (1 & 2) are the 9th and 10th in the Bible so fall outside of the Torah. Judaism may hold Old Testament Prophets in high regard, but if that is the case I would have expected him to use Judaic references to make his point if he was talking to “his people”. the fact that he uses Biblical references would seem to indicate (at least to my mind) that his target audience is outside of Israel.
Just a thought.

50 years ago I spent a year of education under a cultural anthropologist and I have never looked at the world and our species the same since.

Thanks psychohistorian but I will backtrack a little on my original post. What threw me was the thought that he, as a Jew, was using a Christian source to make his point. If that was the case then I would suspect that the target audience was outside of Israel.
It seems that he was actually using a Judaic source and so I think the rightful target audience was fellow Jews within Israel. in making his point he is telling them that he is going to wipe-out everything inside of Gaza, as they are all (in his mind) collectively guilty. He is in essence giving his audience a heads up of the terrors to come and warning them not to feel too sympathetic when they see images of dead women and children as this is what they had to do previously when they were attacked. Also in the message was the reminder that this is not genocidal behaviour but behaviour guided and sanctioned by “the lord of Hosts”.
Of course, as well as the target audience, outside of them you’ll have everyone else including the US Evangelicals. I am pretty sure they will not only hear his message and understand it but they will also view it as divine and so agree to it.
