Wasn’t Hezbollah’s main reasons to exist initially (and still) to (1) defend the interests of the downtrodden Shia Lebenese and (2) to defend southern Lebanon from Israeli incursion and theft of resources. And they have admirably succeeded in these roles over the past few decades?
They are not set up to be an expeditionary force, attacking outside their area. It seems very unfair and unrealistic to rely on them therefore to be anything other than a northern check against Israeli expansion. Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, and the Saudis need to be the actual armies that react to an attempted ethnic cleansing of fellow Sunni Moslems and not a rocket-based, defensive organization.

Gareth Porter at Consortium News on the genocide we are watching:
“.. this Israeli campaign now poses the even graver issue of genocide of Palestinians as a nation. The utter devastation of Gaza and the vast numbers of civilians facing death from bombardment and from deliberately engineered starvation and sickness already presents the world with a spectacle of mass murder of unspeakable proportions.
“The Israelis should face accountability for its crimes.
“A panel of nine distinguished independent experts on human rights who investigated the Gaza emergency for the United Nations’ Human Rights Council has just warned that the Israeli campaign of destruction of Gaza poses “a risk of genocide against the Palestinian people.”
And there is a long history of genocidal thinking and action behind this “genocidal moment”. It should be recalled that during the previous Gaza crisis in 2014, an equally extremist Israeli government openly threatened genocide against the Palestinians.
“Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked declared on Facebook that “the entire Palestinian people is the enemy” and said:
“All of them are enemy fighters and all of them are bleeding from the head. Now it also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow in the footsteps of their sons, there is nothing fair about that. They have to go, and so does the physical house where they raised the snake. Otherwise, more small snakes will grow there.”
“That same year, the Likud deputy speaker of the Israeli Knesset, Moshe Feiglin said:
“Gaza is part of our Land and we will remain there forever. Subsequent to the elimination of terror from Gaza, it will become part of sovereign Israel and will be populated by Jews. This will also serve to ease the housing crisis in Israel.”
“The present Israeli government — whose the extremist right-wing politics resemble those of the 2014 government — has made no effort to hide its political genocidal contempt for the 2.3 million Palestinians living in Gaza. ..”

Thank you for your praise of Caliman’s contribution. I omitted to do it myself: what you say is right. And Caliman’s argument very valuable.

When Winston Churchill’s father, Lord Randolph Churchill, died in 1895 with a 61,000 pound debt (about $12 million in current dollars) to Nathan Rothschild . Rothschild wrote off the loan.
In 1921 Churchill was appointed Secretary of State for the Colonies so he was responsible for Palestine.
Churchill travelled to Mandatory Palestine where, as a supporter of Zionism, he refused an Arab Palestinian petition to prohibit Jewish migration to Palestine.[216] He did allow some temporary restrictions following the 1921 Jaffa riots.[217]
That’s how Churchill repaid his father ‘s debt.

Happy to share my BALFOUR’S BETRAYAL – just send an Email. It is a real eye-opener to actually read these words! As Doreen said, the SEEDS OF CONFLICT! HUGE SEEDS, indeed.
BALFOUR’S BETRAYAL
A TWO-ACT PLAY (WITH PROLOGUE) FOR STAGE & RADIO
Dramatised by Geraint ap Iorwerth
Based on official Government documents, memoranda and letters of those in power both in Whitehall and Palestine 1917-1922. Published in 1972 as ‘Palestine Papers: Seeds of Conflict’ by Doreen Ingrams.
The play is an edited and dramatized account of this book.
Every word is historically accurate.
A taster: 172. SAMUEL In Palestine we do not propose even to go through the process of consulting the wishes of the present inhabitants. The Great Powers are committed to Zionism. Zionism, be it right or wrong, good or bad, is rooted in age-long traditions of far greater importance than the desires and prejudices of the three-quarters-of-a-million Arabs who now inhabit that ancient land. In my opinion, and that of Mr Balfour, this is right and proper. Zionism will not hurt the Arabs, but they will never admit they want it. If Zionism is to influence the Jewish problems worldwide then Palestine must be made available for the largest possible number of Jewish immigrants

So apparently leaked documents today show the plan is to depopulate entire Gaza. Allegedly 2m will be moved in the Sinai desert.

This is how without any kind of official authority granted by either Zionist or British leaders, the Commission in practice laid the foundations for what would eventually become the autonomous institutions of the pre-state Jewish community in Palestine, the Assembly of Representatives and subsequently the Knesset. General Allenby didn’t exactly like these moves, which in fact comprised the establishment of a parallel administration to the British military one.
Obviously, the complicated wording of the Balfour Declaration and the Mandate put Britain in an impossible position. It had to advance the building of a national home for Jews in Palestine without harming the rights of the Arab population, whose positions were increasingly nationalistic.

Long indeed, and thank you. I find the first paragraph above interesting because it well describes how the Jews created for themselves – usually by confidential, high-level negotiations – an exceptional jurisdictional status, seemingly their quasi-genetic forte. There is no State of Israel, technically speaking, yet there is. The Palestinians, many (though not all) of whom have been there for a long time, do not belong because Israelis say so and, curiously, in over a century have failed to constitute themselves as a sovereign state.
I think Britain’s ‘impossible position’ was that it knew it was agreeing to something that was both morally wrong and situationally doomed. The Brits take a lot of criticism these days but they had considerable experience managing multi-ethnic jurisdictions (along with a few glaring failures).
The aspect I find most surprising about the whole sorry business is how little it seems to have changed in the past century, including the steady erosion of Palestinian territory and basic rights.

Doesn’t change that much.
Even if Napoleon won Borodino and temporarily occupied Moscow it was indeed a Pyrric win.
Posted by: Mario | Oct 29 2023 17:15 utc | 90
Napoleon’s army was still in good shape after Borodino; Pyrrhus lost so many men and materiel as well knowing the Romans could reinforce their army as it was their home turf- it is different.
After beating the Russians at Borodino Napoleon could have withdrawn to Smolensk , winter there and conquered the Russians in the summer of 1813.
However, it was Napoleon’s hubris , not the victory at Borodino that befell him. He imagined that the Moscow populace, like the how Warsaw populace met his when entered that city, would welcome as a ‘liberator’.

Much hubris in the believers of US stealth invincibility.
Posted by: Peter AU1 | Oct 29 2023 17:21 utc | 95
Well, the russians and the chinese have incorporated it in their J-20/SU-57 etc. so they must believe it has at least some effectiviness, wouldn’t they?
As for the russian air base in Syria the US has more and can definitely bring way more planes to the theater than Russia can. Though the scale of the war may well exceed what american forces can accomplish.
The 2003 marches found reflection in Corbynism, Die Linke, Podemos, Syriza and a significant shifting of opinion in Europe. They also confirmed the idea that governments pay no attention to the people, which is in itself an important development.

The anglo (loaded word i know) establishment went through Corbynism like a hot knife through butter, the local populists in my neck of wood have turned out to be a bunch of opportunist know nothings, dunno what the others are up to.
At the end of the day everyone at the top in the West that matters now marches in a lockstep with almost perfect discipline, shared goals/ideology and wielding the most powerful propaganda apparatus in human history. Which is not everything but still a lot.

The term ‘ground offensive’ was replaced by ‘ground incursion(s)’ & dubbed “the next phase”.
Raeffirms my early thesis that Bibi wants *limited* intervention in Gaza, to which Hezbollah responds with *limited* attacks. Both are united (of sorts) by the desire to prevent total escalation.
Will it work out?

Yes, one seems to recall a time when the US bombed Syria because it said Syria used nerve agents. Now it is preparing to use them itself. What a difference 10 years makes when you have friends like Israel, the only democracy in the region.

“Yesterday I read an article about an IDF soldier that had been stationed at an outpost overlooking Gaza.
For weeks she had observed very unusual activity inside Gaza near the fence. Her warnings to her superiors were rebuffed.
I can no longer find this article. In searching for it I am getting the impression that history
is being rewritten and excuses and cover stories created.
I know I am not giving much useful data, but does anyone know how to find/link to this article again.

*** What could be a possible solution would be to evacuate the Palestinians out of Gaza and put them in the West Bank. To make the move politically tenable, exile a large part of the Jewish population in the West Bank to leave for Israel, and oblige Israel to essentially pay for the Gaza Strip. That is, pony up money for the gain in territory.***
And what about the very valuable offshore resources that would thus have been permanently stolen from the present population of Gaza?

What fantasy land are you living? Some video gamers imaginary land?
You seem to have some vision of WWII style dogfights, planes going toe to toe with missiles.
Any Russian aircraft will be working withing integrated air defense that includes very long range capability. The Aircraft themselves will carry missiles with twice the range of US air to air missiles.
So called stealth simply provides a smaller radar return. Main stealth is only if the aircraft is facing directly at the radar. Paint is supposed to absorb targeting frequency radar. Perhaps US can only target in that narrow frequency range. There is nothing to say Russian tech is capable of targeting outside that range.
Right through the cold way, the US was never able to build and aircraft that could beat Soviet radar and missile tech though it always tried. F-22 and F-35 are just another Wiley E Coyote ACME box of tricks that will achieve a similar result to Wiley’s escapades.

Of course there are questions to come. What was the profound reason for Rothschild to want a Zionist land? One which he would probably never live in, as he was doing very well, thank you, where he was.
Montagu, and others managed to integrate themselves and rise to influential positions. (much as Averoes and others were happy to be where they were until the Uber-Catholic suppression arrived.) This is the present state of affairs in the US, and much of Europe, so why do they now want to spoil it by being too greedy?
Do the post Kazars have fond memories of past glories to revive or is inbuilt insatisfaction driving territorial expansion?

Edmund James de Rothschildt may have envisioned a different kind of Jewish homeland. As Wikipedia says: “Rothschild recognised that the overriding interest of the Jews of Palestine was the confidence and the friendship of their Arab neighbours. The interests of the Arab cultivators of the land he bought were never overlooked, but by development he made this land capable of maintaining a population ten times its former size.”
Maybe assholes like Netanyahu ended up stealing the Rothschildt legacy.
I cannot believe I am defending the Rothchildts.

1. He took Occidental’s Oil
2. He used oil revenues to build a socialist welfare state
3. He used oil revenues to build the world’s largest fresh water system, which was called the “Great Man Made River” and was one of the first items bombed to smithereens by NATO
4. He used oil revenues to buy gold, then used the gold to back a Gold Based Dinar, which he proposed as a pan african currency.
5. He bankrolled Sarcozy’s last election campaign, thus compromising Sarcozy.
He probably did more, much more than that against NATO’s wishes, but the above were enough to put a bullseye on his back.

“It’s infuriating,” she told Kan of the intelligence failure. “We saw what was happening, we told them about it, and we were the ones who were murdered.”
The Hamas terrorists would train at the border fence nonstop, Desiatnik told Kan. At first, it was once a week, then once a day, and then nearly constantly.
In addition to passing on information about the frequency of the training going on at the fence, the surveillance soldier said she collected evidence of the content of the training, which included how to drive a tank and how to cross into Israel via a tunnel. As the activity on the border increased, she realized that “it was just a matter of time” until something happened.
Former tatzpitaniyot Amit Yerushalmi and Noa Melman corroborated the accounts of the two survivors in an interview published by Channel 12 on Thursday morning.
Yerushalmi had finished her mandatory service a month prior to October 7, and had observed the increased activity on the Gaza border in the months leading up to her release.
“We sat on shifts and saw the convoy of vans. We saw the training, people shooting and rolling, practicing taking over a tank. The training went from once a week to twice a week, from every day to several times a day,” she told Channel 12.

If the reputation of Israel’s military is broken, then the perception that peace with Israel is a good bet is broken. One makes peace with one’s enemy when one believes the enemy to be strong.

Are we starting to see the start of a climb down from Isreal/U.S.? Sputnik is reporting that the Isreali’s opened a water pipeline to Gaza strip, and that they will now allow 100 aid trucks/day to enter. Still not enough, but it beats the 15-20 they were allowing.
Additionally, “Israel bears responsibility under international humanitarian law for protecting the civilian population in the Gaza Strip in both air strikes and ground assaults, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Sunday.”

Remember the heady days when ‘Progressives’ spoke of high ideals? The betterment of mankind? Which became ‘people kind’ as progressives mustn’t be gender biased.
So, where o where are the Progressives now? Where is their political voice in their chosen political parties? Are they even still clinging to party affiliation now? Valid question.
I see doxxing of even Harvard students who dare speak out and Wall St. billionaires condemning them for taking a stand against inhumanity.
