Palestine Open Thread 2023-240

Only for news & views directly related to war on Gaza.

The current open thread for other issues is here.

To read:

> The siege of Gaza’s 2.3 million Palestinians, imposed by Israel in 2007 following the election of Hamas to rule the enclave, allowed for all sorts of experiments.

How could the population best be contained? What restrictions could be placed on their diet and lifestyle? How were networks of informers and collaborators to be recruited from afar? What effect did the population’s entrapment and repeated bombardment have on social and political relations?

And ultimately how were Gaza’s inhabitants to be kept subjugated and an uprising prevented? <

Please stick to the topic. Contribute facts. Do not attack other commentators.

An Israeli woman who survived the Hamas assault on settlements near the Gaza boundary on 7 October says Israeli civilians were “undoubtedly” killed by their own security forces.
It happened when Israeli forces engaged in fierce gun battles with Palestinian fighters in Kibbutz Be’eri and fired indiscriminately at both the fighters and their Israeli prisoners.
“They eliminated everyone, including the hostages,” she told Israeli radio. “There was very, very heavy crossfire” and even tank shelling.
The woman, 44-year-old mother of three Yasmin Porat, said that prior to that, she and other civilians had been held by the Palestinians for several hours and treated “humanely.” She had fled the nearby “Nova” rave.

Gaza concentration camp as much the symbol of genocidal zionism as it is a symbol of european barbaric colonialism. Jonathan cook makes a few lucid remarks.
“Six years later, Ayelet Shaked, who would soon be appointed a senior Israeli minister, declared all Palestinians in Gaza to be “the enemy”, and included “its elderly and its women, its cities and its villages, its property and its infrastructure”.
She called on Israel to kill the mothers of Palestinian fighters resisting the occupation so they could not give birth to more “little snakes” – Palestinian children.
During the 2019 general election, Benny Gantz, then leader of the opposition and soon-to-be defence minister, campaigned with a video celebrating his time as head of the Israeli military, when “parts of Gaza were sent back to the Stone Age”.
In 2016, another general, Yair Golan, who at the time was the Israeli military’s second in command, described developments in Israel as echoing the period in Germany leading up to the Holocaust.”

In case anyone missed it, this was posted to the “Arnaud Bertrand – How Israel Stepped Into A Trap” thread yesterday:

It is very much worth watching, imho. About 18 minutes. A monologue.
The speaker is Shahid Bolsen. For reference, this is his website:

Anyway, I’d be interested in people’s views on the substance/content of his argument.

This is Josh Hammer, Jewish, on the Dailywire website from 2019——
It is long past time for the Israeli government to commence a full-on, comprehensive land/air invasion to hunt down and permanently root out every last one of the Hamas leadership there. Israel surely has no interest in formally re-annexing Gaza — calamitous as Sharon’s withdrawal was, the Israeli government could not be any less interested in now re-absorbing the radicalized Arab populace there. And while the Israel Defense Forces would no doubt suffer high and tragic casualties as a result of a prolonged land invasion, one is forced to consider the tradeoff of inaction — the continuance of the status quo. And that status quo is truly terrible for all parties involved.
Yes, the world would howl and shriek. The Jew-hating ignoramuses of the “international community” — best embodied by that wretched hive of Western values-hating scum and anti-Semitic villainy known as the United Nations — would cry out in agony against Israel’s “militarism.”

Hannibal Protocol (or Directive) according to the Times of Israel

The protocol has existed in the Israel Defense Forces for decades, as a response to the often incredibly lopsided prisoner exchanges between Israel and terrorist groups who kidnap IDF soldiers. It again rose to prominence 10 years ago following the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit.
The directive allows soldiers to use potentially massive amounts of force to prevent a soldier from falling into the hands of the enemy. This includes the possibility of endangering the life of the soldier in question in order to prevent his capture.
Some officers, however, understand the order to mean that soldiers ought to deliberately kill their comrade in order to stop him from being taken prisoner, not that they may accidentally injure or kill him in their attempt.

YouTube has banned Eva Bartlett’s account (October 14, 2023):

After 13 years of having a Youtube account (which had just under 50,000 subscribers), now, while Israel is genociding Palestinians, Youtube has suddenly closed my account completely.
This is not coincidental. I had many videos which I took in Gaza, under Israel’s bombs in 2009 & 2012. Videos & testimonies which counter the Zionist narrative & lies.
I had also, just yesterday, done a thread on Twitter wherein I had uploaded a number of videos from 2009 under Israeli bombs, to show that Palestinian ambulances were carrying Palestinian victims of Israeli bombing/sniping, and NOT weapons.
That’s how it works, censorship of that which counters the Zionist, or NATO, propaganda…censorship to whitewash Israel’s slaughter of Palestinian civilians.
I did back everything up on Odysee.
I’m not *surprised* by this, indeed anticipated it (hence backing up on Odysee & downloading to hard drive my videos).
But, I’m still going to protest blatant censorship–blatant whitewashing of Israel’s crimes against Palestinians.
*NOTE: I also had years of uploads & reports from Syria & dozens of uploads & reports from the Donbass.

So it seems like you, and others, are not interested in discussing, critiquing or attempting to refute or debunk the content and substance of the 18-minute monologue, “Message to the Israeli People”. The reluctance to getting into discussion of the arguments is quite interesting in itself…
And by the way, are you not aware that some people’s accents change significantly if they live outside of their home country or region for a long time. It’s not everyone, or even a majority. But a decent chunk of people end up with very different–and sometimes unusual–accents.

OK, thanks for your reply (before my second reply, which is a bit ironic). Clearly Mr. Bolsen is a controversial figure, but I had never heard of him prior to watching this video.
It seems to me that the argument is too well thought out and presented to be dismissed.
I think the reason why a lot of people are taking notice is because he has set out in very clear, succinct and easily understood terms what is going on. And what has been going on since Truman in 1948, and particularly since 1967. He has voiced what we subconsciously knew but couldn’t articulate.
And, he makes a suggestion regarding what he views as the only possible long-term solution–a one-state solution with equal rights for everyone. Yes, it’s overly simplistic because of the 75 years of bitterness that has accumulated. But I think he is right, and I think that gradually the saner parts of the world will come to more or less agree with him. And maybe more Israelis will too? Who knows. The Israelis with any sense and sense of humanity will have to fight the crazies too.

Ethnic Cleansing
No one doubts that Netanyahu and his ultra right wing political allies have long wanted to ethnically cleanse the Palestinians.
But how to get the Israeli people to accept a massive war crime?
They needed moral outrage, they needed an event horrible enough that it would invoke the worst instincts of humans.
They needed an Israeli 9/11.
Over months Netanyahu tightened the screws on the Palestinian population.
Then, repeated warnings were received by Israel that something BIG was imminent.
Israel’s response was to remove 3/4 of the troops from the Gaza border, so
as to enable a manufactured “security failure”.
Not only were the troops thinned out but at just the right moment communications, we are told,
between Israeli units went down. The claim is that Hamas commandos took down the communication,
BUT whose claim is this?. The claim comes from the same people that manufactured the
“security failure”, the IDF.
The IDF would rather have the charge that “mistakes were made” rather than that the
security failure was by design.
On any other occassion the IDF would never confirm to Hamas
that their technique of attacking a communication center is a workable, successful tactic, it is
ridiculous to believe that the IDF would. Never! Except to create a cover story for their
manufactured “security failure”.
How often was the Hannibal Directive (or Hannibal Protocol) implemented that bloody day?
Who is counting the casualties? And you can be certain that the numbers are inflated so
as to maximize outrage.
Netanyahu needed outrage, that was his goal so as to get the Israeli people to accept
a massive war crime – ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians.

Who is counting the casualties? And you can be certain that the numbers are inflated so
as to maximize outrage.
Netanyahu needed outrage, that was his goal so as to get the Israeli people to accept
a massive war crime – ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians.

Yes and I apologize for being rude. It’s easy to dismiss the message for an imperfect messenger. He makes valid points. I also agree with malenkov in that the US keeps as many countries as possible on the payroll.
Still, the guy is shady IMO.

“But how to get the Israeli people to accept a massive war crime?”
Huh? They’ve been comfortable with their massive war crimes for at least three-quarters of a century.

Blinken has continued his illustrious career of failed diplomacy having achieved nothing from all his jet-setting around. One almost imagines it’s intentional on his part…
The Israeli army has said that the weather has delayed their incursion in imitation of the USAF claiming the same thing when ISIS entered Iraq some years ago, like in Iraq where clear blue skies were in effect, there is no weather reason for the delay with a warm clear autumn providing no known issues for a combined arms assault. It seems more like with the immediate shock and anger having waned and a desire for revenge being largely sated with their aerial bombardments, the Israelis are wondering if a serious ground war in Gaza is actually necessary and unavoidable in a “we need to escalate, this is an escalation, let’s do this” kind of way. Yet another Israeli ground war and occupation with no coherent strategic objective seems like something even Netanyahu has no stomach for (Which will, no doubt, produce lots of new self-pitying works of art in the “cry and shoot” genre) particularly since it seems like the regional war it’d trigger is one the US will lose. It’s also apparent that there has been no serious Israeli war crimes events, certainly nothing on this scale since the “great awokening” and they know they have lost social media. Additionally, a whole new audience might start to notice patterns from all this that might lead to them putting the pieces together on how US foreign policy is made.
And yet I’m struck by how, like the scorpion on the frog, the neocons and Israelis must simply keep going and refuse to negotiate.
This all feels like the First World War. Everyone can see an opening to win a regional war with good arguments for a “now or never” perspective but nobody is sure of victory.
Perhaps a compromise might be struck, no Israeli soldiers enter Gaza but the Israelis compel the Gazans to leave “temporarily” for Egypt through denying food and water. They’ll be allowed to try and reach Europe and a huge reduction in Gaza’s population will be achieved “voluntarily”.

This just in, Sputnik News: Assad, Putin discuss ways to stop Israeli attacks on Gaza Strip at phone talks.

I believe the “attacks” referred to would be air strikes, would they not? I say this as a Canadian — when Russia talks like this, everyone should settle down. How do you think borders stay secure around here?? But they seem totally gone deaf in Israel. FWIW, the US knows precisely what it means when Russia talks like this. They’ll stand down (not in the media, of course).

Yes, the way Eva Bartlett has been treated is totalitarian. Criminal. If I’m not mistaken – like Kit Klarenberg and others – she has been subject to some ridiculous police state treatment. She has also been very (correctly) outspoken on Ukraine.
Goes to show, capitalism is at least as barbaric and controlling as any “evil” communist or Islamist country in how it polices dissenting thought…and truth.
I will gladly contribute to her if I can.

>If true, the US has, and is aware of this, a fear of mutinies. Just like Rome did, they say. 😉
Some American troops might have objections to fighting in/around/for Israel. However there are plenty of others who would dance for joy is allowed to commit genocide. No need to order genocide or even hint at it. Just make it clear USA will stand by its troops and they’ll eagerly violate the rules of engagement and then bask in glory afterwards: “Thank you for your service! Hope you killed a lot of towel heads!” Trust me, I’m American with American friends and relatives and I know the American mind.

Meanwhile in Plainfield, Illinois, USA, a 6 year old American boy of Palestinian descent, Wadea Al Fayoume, was murdered by his family’s 71 year old Landlord – the little boy’s body was stabbed 26 times – his mother who tried to defend him is in critical condition.
His murderer who had previously got on well with his family was believed to have been inspired by Islamophobic media coverage. Meanwhile Jewish people in the west are bleating about feeling threatened by a few noisy demonstration

Story is already being buried in mainstream media and there has been virtually no condemnation in the west

“From March to June, more than 8,500 Mauritanians arrived in the country by crossing the border illegally from Mexico, up from just 1,000 in the four months prior, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.”
https://apnews.com/article/mauritania-immigration-west-africa-united-states-tiktok-route-bbef5afc25680ad7f2704afa76f44cea
This year 10,000 people from Mauritania have migrated to US because of police brutality against blacks in their home country. They flew to Nicaragua, traveled to Mexico, and then Ohio after crossing the border. Nicaragua is making it possible by giving visa on arrival to most people from Africa. Nicaragua can do the same with Gazans who can continue on their way to the Mexico-Texas border. If the US was able to take almost 300,000 Ukrainians since the war broke out, why not take 300,000 Gazans?
Texas operates free shuttle service for migrants from Texas to New York City where migrants are guaranteed housing. Imagine a huge Gazan community in New York rising in the next few years. It will really add to the diversity of the city as an equally Muslim and Jewish city.

The interview is a smoking gun.

Most depressing is that we are all spattered in blood as citizens of great western nations. The Palestinians defense is to bleed and make an unseemly mess.
Israel and its backers revealed for what they are for those willing to see. US makes insincere sounds of not wanting too much blood shed – try to tone it down but how many weapons orders can we put you down for?
Lindsay Graham is to true anti-semite – a squealing war pig. How can people elect such a blood thirsty freak.
Had to sit through a movie about war veterans (“heros”) other day – they are “traumatized” by all the violence they have “seen”. They are “victims” suffering with “emotional stress”. Close as media gets to anti-war.

A few threads ago Lavrov’s Dog has linked to a good video on racism in Israeli society. Here’s the transcript:

Israel is one of the most racist countries in the world. While you’ll never hear anyone in the mainstream media say this, this is actually one of the most important things you need to understand if you want to know what’s happening right now.
A video of a woman shouting: “We’ll kill you all! All! All of you. One by one. Fucking Muslims.”
From its inception, the whole idea of Israel as a country was based on racism. Israel was conceived as a Jewish state, and while there’s nothing wrong in principle with Jews having a homeland, the problem is that they insisted that that homeland had to be in Palestine, which already belonged to someone: the Palestinians. The slogan of Israel’s founders was “A land for a people for a people without a land.” But deep down, they all knew that the only way to have a Jewish majority in Palestine, an Arab country, was to expel the Arabs. One of the founders of Israel, Yosef Weitz, wrote: “There is no room in the country for both [Arab and Jewish] peoples… there is no way but to transfer the [Palestinian] Arabs from here to the neighboring countries.” Israel was quite literally founded by expelling and massacring hundreds of thousands of Arabs in a years long process called the Nakba. And when you found a country based on racial exclusion, you’re going to get a culture that fosters and celebrates racial exclusion, because countries that commit terrible atrocities rarely acknowledge committing those atrocities. And the presence of Palestinians who remained in Palestine became a constant reminder not only of the violence that founded Israel, but of the constantly looming threat that they might come back and try to reclaim their land.
Every day you can find videos coming out of Israel showing Israelis calling for all Arabs to die…
A video of a crowd chanting “Death to the Arabs.” A video of a man shouting “A good Arab is a dead Arab.”
insulting the Prophet Muhammad…
A video of a crowd singing “[Prophet] Mohammed is dead.” A video of a man shouting “Your religion is rubbish.”
desecrating mosques, spitting on Christians, mocking and celebrating the murder of Palestinians, committing violent hate crimes against Palestinians, watching Gaza get carpet bombed from a cliffside for entertainment.
But don’t just go off these anecdotes. Let’s look at some of the polls. One poll found that two thirds of Israeli teens believe Arabs to be less intelligent, uncultured and violent. It also found that 50% of Israelis wouldn’t live in the same building as Arabs, wouldn’t befriend Arabs, wouldn’t let their children befriend Arabs and wouldn’t let Arabs into their homes. Another poll found that 60% of Israeli Jews want segregation from Arabs. Another poll found that half of Israeli Jews agree with the statement “Most Jews are better than most non-jews because they were born Jews.” The poll also found that 88% of Israeli Jews would be disturbed if their son befriended an Arab girl and 90% would be disturbed if their daughter befriended an Arab boy. This poll found that about half of Israeli high schoolers don’t think Arabs should have the right to vote. Another poll showed that almost half of Israeli Jews don’t want Arabs teaching their kids.
Not only are these views widely held in Israeli society, they’re also represented in government, which codifies these sentiments into law. For example, Israel has a law that says if an Israeli marries a Palestinian or someone from several other regional Arab states, that person isn’t allowed to move in with said Israeli. This law was passed in 2003, but it’s been renewed every single year since. Israel also doesn’t allow interreligious marriage to be performed in the country, which is meant to deter Jews from marrying non-Jews. In 2018, Israel passed the nation state law, a law which has constitutional status, which says the right to exercise national self-determination, i.e., have rights, is the exclusive right of Jews. No one else. There’s also the Nakba law, which makes it illegal to acknowledge the Nakba, the expulsions of Palestinians that were needed to found Israel. This would be like passing a law to make it illegal to talk about indigenous genocide or slavery in America. There’s also the admissions committee law, which basically allows towns to operate panels that deny applications for entry based on “sociocultural” compatibility, which essentially just legalizes racist housing discrimination.
In Israel, advocating genocide of Palestinians doesn’t hurt your chances of holding a high position in government, and in fact, in many cases, it helps. In 2014, Israeli lawmaker Ayelet Shaked wrote an unhinged rant on Facebook, calling all Palestinians enemy combatants and saying their mothers should be killed for giving birth to “little snakes.” The next year she was appointed the Minister of Justice by Benjamin Netanyahu. Itamar Ben-Gvir, a lifelong admirer of Meir Kahane—an Arab exterminationist—a man who praised the Jewish settler who killed a Palestinian for throwing a rock at him, a man who was famously acquitted after being criminally charged for chanting “Death to Arabs,” is Israel’s current Minister of National Security. He’s not some fringe figure either, he’s one of the most popular politicians in Israel right now.
In the last few days, Israel has been working hard to cast itself as the victim, the victim of hatred, the victim of terrorism, the victim of anti-semitism. That they have no choice but to lay siege to Gaza. But underneath this carefully concocted victim complex is a racist Jewish supremacist state that’s been trying to finish the job that the Nakba started for decades. And really, this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. After all, they’re literally cutting off water and electricity to a city of 2 million people right now. Their generals talk openly about flattening Gaza and killing “the animals,” meaning Palestinians. It’s obvious their goal is genocide.
