Palestine Open Thread 2023-237

Only for news & views directly related to the conflict in Palestine.

News of the day:

Gregg Carlstrom @glcarlstrom – 4:51 UTC · Oct 12, 2023

MbS spoke last night with Iran's president Raisi (!). First call ever. From Saudi readout: MbS "expressed deep concern for the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza" and "underscored the kingdom's unwavering stance in standing up for the Palestinian cause."
HRH Crown Prince Receives Phone Call from Iranian President

The call was likely in response to U.S. plans for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza:

The US is in active talks with Israel and Egypt to establish "safe passage" corridors for civilians in Gaza to flee ongoing Israeli airstrikes, the White House said Wednesday amid an expected ground offensive in the besieged enclave.

"We're actively discussing this with our Israeli and our Egyptian counterparts, we support safe passions for civilians. Civilians are not to blame for what Hamas has done. They didn't do anything wrong," National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters at the White House.

"We are actively working on this with Egyptian and our Israeli counterparts. Civilians are protected under the laws of armed conflict, and they should be given every opportunity to avoid the fighting," he added.

The current open thread for other issues is here.

Please stick to the topic. Contribute facts. Do not attack other commentators.

There are no videos and pictures and there never will be. Despite the alphabet-org idiots of the West doing their best to secure the means of manufacturing consent (Elon Musk being tasked with buying Twitter most majorly), they will never learn that you can’t simply keep telling someone something for which there is no visible referent and get away with it forever.

my impression of you is you are dishonest. you didn’t explicitly say resistance is futile but you have offered no blueprint of what an effective resistance would look like. Chechny is doing pretty well under Kadyrov, and you offer nothing but an ad hominen to justify your admitted dislike of an effective leader.
LOL “a doctrine that permits compromise”, another hasbara talking point. Gaza is an open air concentration camp, “compromise” has not been on the agenda ever.

Speculate that there is a concerted effort by parties in Israel and US to get rid of Netanyahu. He has proven to be a problem and these leaks are here to make sure he and his new allies go down for good.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moshe_Arbel
Jokers like that were in charge of security in his cabinet. They all we go down. Finished.

The preoccupation of the entire Western hegemon right now seems to be anxiously barking and screeching at Hezbollah. Seems as if they are afraid of what they are capable of doing to the Zionist state. The ideological crackdowns will ramp up, I’m afraid–they will become more and more necessary if the IDF attempts anything more severe than it has.

My read of the situation is that (1) Hamas took the initiative and escalation dominance away from Shias and (2) put them in an awkward position from which to regain it. 2 requires that Hizbollah enter into the fray but it can prove hard to caliberate their involvement to insure it doesn’t develop into a wider war.
The West knows that RoA sitting this out would damage their prestige, yet both sides seem to agree that entering into it would be a possibly terminal affairs for one or all parties. So, this goading is making PR points.
If IR had truly ordered and organized this affair there would have been no goading of Hizbollah. We would be reading about the northern front and cities going up in smoke in various countries as a multi-faceted plan unfolded.
Take some time to reflect on the implication of Hamas taking such an action without first getting greenlights from all parties that would naturally be immediately in the crosshairs.

Also, you still haven’t explained why you adopted an anti-communist and Russophobic animated protagonist as your ID …
This is a completely dehumanizing description of Russians and the Soviet Union.

I adopted it because it’s funny. And if you think this offends Russians, apparently you haven’t hung out with many of them. They’re the masters of gallows humor.

I watched a very good video of the festival and the entrance at the highway, perhaps the same one. I didn’t watch it all the but the festival was closed down when rocket were seen heading to a destination further north. At the junction onto the highway the traffic had been stopped and the people got out and lay on the ground beside their cars. then some gunfire sounded and they panicked and ran off on foot abandoning the cars. At that point no cars had been damaged and the armed security team had made its appearance in the video. It seems that after that a firefight began at some point between the security team and Hamas and that would have caused the damage to some of the abandoned cars. The destroyed and damaged cars were mostly in very close proximity to or at the junction and that is were I saw the security team located in the video.

Malenkov @ 179
No apology needed. Now that the query has appeared four times, does anyone know?
Somehow I don’t think Gaza or Hamas just forgot ti prepare for this. Even if that guess is right, how long could they hold out? I would anticipate mass death in a week.

No, you’re just butthurt about my calling you twisted.
I did allude to “secular”, and “inclusive” political front with a leadership that is not lost in lala land of messianic musings. You however are demanding of me to provide a “blueprint” for this decades long conflict in the bar.
Who is the dishonest one?
Obviously if you are a Jew or Muslim or Christian who is dead set (you may get your wish!) for End Times, then yeah, sure, let the nukes fly.
Otherwise, let’s try your hand with a leadership (regardless of belief or disbelief) that makes decisions based on reasoning and not some projections into obscure prophecies and words.

Events are moving fast. Escobar’s report for The Cradle, “The geopolitics of Al-Aqsa Flood”, was delayed from Tuesday for translation into Arabic. There’re a few nibbles of info just as there are with the Crooke interview (I’ve yet to watch the one by The Duran). As usual, Crooke’s priceless for providing the massively important underlying context. As for targeting Syria, that would be a huge mistake. Nobody’s said much about Jordan, but within the Arab world, it’s the keeper of Al-Aqsa that the Zionists are determined to destroy. What’s very glaring is the openness of the Zionists in stating their program and the utter lack of any reporting on it within the West.

I am not even Jewish but the anti-semitism here is palpable and bothersome. Remember ordinary citizens were cheering where naked/helpless women were being paraded. I used to love reading MoA’s take on war etc but this is something else. In the past I have donated here but now I regret it. Suffice it to say I wont be visiting this site again.

Actual real anti-semitism is usually quickly dealt with by other commenters on this site. As you are obviously following the propagandist lie of equating anti-Zionism with anti-semitism, and not placing actions in any kind of proper historical context, perhaps it is best for you to leave.

I doubt anyone has a surefire black and white answer to the question of water in the tunnels.
I tend towards karlof1’s line of thought about the wells. I had actually looked at the map to see where any surface water may be, streams dry watercourses ect but didn’t see much. What would be needed is a map of the underground aquifers and basins in that area to see if they can supply water with wells or bores.

Posted by: Exile | Oct 12 2023 18:47 utc | 209
I think Israelis have to accept a -one state solution-. Otherwise it is unlikely Israel will last long. Even if they manage to “win” this war, this is just delaying the inevitable. But if people are happy with 2 state, fine. The two people have a lot to offer one another – that would be the ideal.
Likud and all other extremists -must- be tamed. There is a cliff going forward with hard core likud types and the possibility of life after extreme voices are rejected.
Same goes for the other camp. Right now, deeds of empire and imperialism and all that baggage is obscuring the true moral and ethical stature of the outfits that run the “Resistance”, including your darling Russia. They only look good in certain quarters because of the figure cut by the West and even then only in context of certain ’causes’ that they have merely embraced after other contenders were knocked out. That is it.
The system, however, wants us to pick a side for one extreme or another. This narrative they control so this is optimal for them. This is why, for example, Mr. Putin is telling the rest of the world of what is in “Muslim hearts”. As if.
Really, I thought only Allah Holy and Exalted knows what is in the hearts..

I think seepage through enough sand would filter a lot of the salt from the water. I can remember as a child drinking (well sipping…..warily) water in deep holes dug high on beaches.
Proably not recommended for long term use, but Gaza has had to get used to drinking rationed and contaminated water for many years now.

She is a dual German-Israeli citizen of military conscription age. It appears she was shot on the arm by Israeli security in friendly fire. Her outfit in the pick-up is what she wears as shown in her social media – scantily clad , Later News indicate she has been taken to a Gaza hospital.

A reconciliation. Figure it out as you must. The state for Palestine in the 2-state design is pathetic. That is not a state. Also, there is no denying that both Jews and Palestinians can have genuine ethnic (or whatever) tender feelings for this or that town or hill on the wrong side of the border. It will keep festering generation after generation. It has to be a land that all can say our land. The original idea apparently was to become so formidable and keep the neighboring countries down. That clearly does not work anymore. And it only get worse at the neighborhood advances and empire crumbles. It will happen, you know.
And, all “faithful” must sit down like nice boys and girls and wait until God sends a sign from Heaven saying “Go”. And until then, things must be left as they are: Al Aqsa for Muslims and Jews praying to a wall. Any part that struts along and decides to play messianic demand Signs from God because otherwise any old faker could come and play say Ayatollah, right?
(Where are you getting this about hating Russians and racism? I expressed no such thing. Putin may be a “great man” but he is not the totality of Russia or Russians.)

There is nothing to “negotiate”. This has been the stumbling block for 70 years that brought the UNSC Resolution with “concrete” territories & redrawn National 2 state maps as has happened in nation after nation since UNSC inception.
It’s why they are the guardians of international Peace.
The resolutions are the “negotiations” and the nations that are unable to resolve differences, always warring, creating regional spillovers and civilian casualties, well they are obligated to abide by the decisions of the UNSC Resolution.
Don’t forget, US also agreed to Resolution of 2 State with identifying borders and capitals. That’s how the resolutions passed in the first place.
Negotiation time over. Ignoring international law is over.
Unless UNSC agrees to send Peacekeepers in and “force” enforcement of UNSC Charter and resolution or the Quartet meets and reassess territories ect. There is no other “Resolution” that will be made.
Russia and China will steer clear of any attempt to drag them into either the conflict itself, or temporary compromises (other than ceasefire and humanitarian aid).
This is about land. Not “religion”. It’s control of land and resources. The land issue has been unresolved since inception. Should Israel & US fail to adopt and enforce UNSC resolution, the “force” will come from foreign Arab States. The “status quo” is altered now forever.

Scott Ritter says if Hezbollah comes in, with Syrian and Iranian backing, they can actually defeat Israel which he believes is unable to ever treat Palestinians well or honor agreements etc.
Meanwhile Bibi has said here and there that basically their intention is to move the Palestinians out, starting with Gaza strip.
Basically, both sides want a One State solution with the other guys banished. Frankly, this sounds correct. But it’s going to take a fight.
Big Countries that call from on high for peace and negotiations and their unworkable Two State solution only perpetuate the suffering. They allowed Israel to form a State there without also forming and guaranteeing a Palestinian one. This was unfair, unworkable and doubtless designed to fail, designed to allow Israel to slowly squeeze the Arabs out. This is why the problem has been intractable for over 70 years.
In short, there are only two viable solutions: either all Arabs leave the territory and it becomes a Jews-only State. Or all Jews leave and it becomes a Palestinians-only State. Since the Palestinians were there first and never agreed to this, the Jews should leave.
Of course, this will not happen. What will happen will be just more mess given to us by our blundering world leadership class.

It’s interesting how b let the Zionist trolls off the hook and tried to ban one of my IPs (not that I tried to use more than one IP, but in dynamic IP mode I apparently get many different IPs) and called me an idiot. b also seems to be one of the pro-Zionist types who hide behind “tolerating” anti-Zionism, just as Gray Area is. Zionist types.
Okay, I just exit.

“I am not even Jewish but the anti-semitism here is palpable and bothersome. Remember ordinary citizens were cheering where naked/helpless women were being paraded.”
Havent seen anyone cheering the deaths of Israeli civilians here. Nor rooting for the terrorist group called Hamas.
Maybe some have not shown enough compassion for Israeli lives lost. But given that Israeli leader Netanyahu immediately called for deaths of Palestinian civilians and Israeli Defense Minister also called Palestinian civilians nonhuman animals that will die. Not to mention the immediate destruction of a city of 2 million civilians, can anyone blame them?

As many commenters have noted the Israeli escalation to more active genocide occurs in a far different geopolitical architecture – the expanded BRICS, rapprochement between China and Russia – both playing more expanded international roles. Means for obviating traditional news channels are many and well developed. Arab countries are uniting in support of Palestinians. The US is a fast dying hegemon – with high level politico, state department officios and oligarchs of all stripes, ranting with much sound and fury signifying nothing. Africa, Eurasia are stung by Netanyahu’s nasty racial designation of all Palestine (and by association all the Islamic world, as well as much of Africa) as animals. Repetition of not only past commentary, but long bruited in the Knesset, settlements, in downtown Tel Aviv. Israeli/US/UK/EU players in this situation have essentially destroyed any long term credibility and influence – anticipate the majority of the world strongly allied against, fully enabled to wreak economic, political and diplomatic havoc against these hegemons who whose atrocious actions have wreaked untoward violence across the planet with impunity. Payback will be well considered, and unforgiving.

The 2 state solution is described in IUNR 181 – the founding document which created Israel. The boundries in 181 remain the only internationally recognized boundries of the 2 states.
It’s the path for peace and security of the Jewish State. The Likud‘s way has failed.

Methinks you thinks far too much of your conception(s). My read is you occupy an alternate reality where argument for the sake of argument trumps everything else and introduces division and doubt about what is real and factual. Which may be your ultimate goal.
ie “2 requires that Hizbollah enter into the fray ” Good grief Charlie Brown
I doubt very much Hizbollah plans it’s course of actions based on such juvenile concerns as what you put forward and apparently harbor.
The now deceased war correspondent Robert Fisk wrote about Hizbollah from time to time as he related his on the ground personal experiences and my take from what Fisk wrote was these are not the type of people Washington can buy nor manipulate.
Fisk noted the difference between them and the Syrian Army Soldiers who fought along side them and wrote they were very different. The Syrians were like many in service to to a National Army, wanted to live a little when time away from the battlefield allowed them to kick back, drink some hooch, smoke some rope and whoop it up a bit. But not the Hizbollah lads, they marched to their own drummers and were very serious men, very devout, very disciplined.
Men of purpose, and that my young spinner is why Israel and the West doana like them so much.
Reading many of your seemingly endless posts makes me think of a shape shifter.

IMO, the most outspoken Arab leader over the past several days was Iraqi PM Sudani with his words at the Russian Energy Week Plenary Session when he described the intensity of the “Arab Street,” which will only escalate along with the Zionist’s escalations. What I said above about the muting in the West of the Zionist’s plans doesn’t apply at all to the Umma, where they are very well known. The Peace Deal done by Mubarak that eventually got him killed is hated by the majority of Egyptians, and Sisi is well aware of that. The same must be said for Jordan and Syria. We already have a good idea of how Hezbollah will respond. Here’s what Sudani said in Moscow:

Today, the position on the Palestinian issue is not only a political position, it is a position that reflects first of all our humanitarian needs. And this is a legally justified position. The world ignored this problem, and now everyone is wondering how this happened, why Hamas went to this intifada, to resist, because the Palestinian people have experienced years and decades of persecution, oppression, and non-compliance with all internationally accepted resolutions.
More than 70 decisions and resolutions have been adopted by the General Assembly and the Security Council regarding the Palestinian issue. However, none of them, in fact, was fulfilled, including by the Israeli authorities. So what do you expect from a people who have a doctrine, an idea, but their rights are not being implemented?
The Palestinians are a free people, and they are part of an Islamic Ummah of more than two billion people. And so when we see the results, the consequences of this position, and we see that the Israelis insist on using exactly the methods that they are currently using, as a result, spontaneous strikes are carried out on Gaza, there is destruction. At the same time, the Israelis are using all their arsenal, and they openly declare their responsibility for these events. They say that they made the decision to stop the supply of water and electricity not only to humiliate the people who live there, and they even call them words that they don’t want to say – this is an insult to all of humanity.
Today, the international community must openly approve whether there are any agreements, international principles that regulate this situation and regulate the situation in the world, or whether there is nothing at all, and any country in the world can take steps at its discretion. This is wrong. We live in a world where the forces of good need to come together.
That is why, Mr. President, I appeal to you, as the President of a country that is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to take the initiative for a cease – fire, a real ceasefire and finding a real solution to the Palestinian problem, because we cannot even predict the consequences of these challenges for the entire region. We are talking about the Arab and Islamic “street”, they are just now seething, seeing the events that are taking place in Palestine, the murders and the attack on the Gaza Strip….
Continued bombing of Gaza as we see it now, and hints that there will be a ground operation-all this leads to madness in the region. As I mentioned, the Islamic Arab “street” is hot, it sees all these crimes. And ignoring, ignoring the opinions of ordinary people is a very big threat to the whole world….
What I said about the growing discontent on the Arab “street” is that there will be growing pressure on Arab governments to take a clear position. The expansion of the crisis and conflict in the region will undoubtedly disrupt stability. As a Government, we are trying to fulfill our de-escalation responsibilities. It doesn’t matter whether we work with friendly or unfriendly countries, but it is important for us to respond to emerging challenges. [My Emphasis]

Much more was said about the overall geopolitical situation and how Iraq sees and would like to handle these crises, which makes the discussion very rich and important. Today Putin’s in Bishkek for a CIS meeting where all this will also be discussed, where Putin also held specific talks with Azerbaijan’s Aliev on not just the conflict with Armenia.
IMO, only one power can halt the Zionists and only momentarily and that’s the Outlaw US Empire as it has the power of the purse and the armory, both of which could be withheld if Team Biden wanted. Otherwise, if the Zionists are allowed to continue their plans, a wider war will occur.

“I think all our people will be our great army. We cannot talk about “Switzerland of the future” – probably, our state will be able to be like this a long time after. But we will definitely become a “big Israel” with its own face. We will not be surprised that we will have representatives of the Armed Forces or the National Guard in all institutions, supermarkets, cinemas, there will be people with weapons. I am sure that our security issue will be number one in the next ten years,” the President said.

Al Jazeera—no other news agency— actually headlined this address to Ukraine the day it was published. Yet here we are. Some clinging to mythic laws of war that above all prohibit sexual violence and the “most vulnerable” civilians, women, children, puppies, and goldfish, escape in time for luncheon.
RT news edition this a.m. yielded the floor to another Israeli automaton, posing as some kind of ISV consultant, who said, among other preposterous utterances rapes and decapitated babies, the IDF is not like Hamas. Israelis do not deliberately kill civilians. But Hamas hides weapons in children’s bedrooms, and there’s no way for Israeli defense to know who is and who is not Hamas agent. More jews have died in Hamas’ reign of terror than during the holocaust. etc etc
The first two minutes of his monologue reminded me of Charles Manson’s interview of measured words with Tom Snyder back in the day. I suppose, that’s why an RT producer booked him for the segment. More the pity, RT broadcasting in blocked in Europe.

“Israeli” is a reservist/militia member with a gun at all times (these Zionist ID’s always cite the same Zionist sources)

This new 2nd large conflict has been less than a week and esculating faster than a fighter jet off a sinking US aircraft carrier.
This was planned start to finish by the US and Israel, it mutialy benifits both or so they think in their delusional minds.
Exactly the same as pre Ukraine confict.
Provocation, Self defence, Reaction then villifacation by media and political western histreonics.
Hey presto…
Public perseption manigment.
In less than a week.

An interesting analysis by Timor Fomenko on Sputniknews, How a US ‘peace plan’ brought war to Israel’s doorstep. The 2020 Abraham Accords were a time bomb that exploded in last week’s Hamas assault.
Some extracts:
« Why is this happening now? And how does it relate to the broader context of not only the Middle East, but the world?
Two words: Abraham Accords.
The United States’ push to create a one-sided, unbalanced and effective appeasement of Israel’s actions, coupled with an attempt to use such to isolate Iran, has led to the calculation by Hamas that the only way to salvage its cause is to unleash a full-scale armed struggle. In doing so, the militants’ goal is not to destroy Israel head on, (…) it is to turn the diplomatic and political tide in the region against Israel and the US in the name of a new Jihad.
The Abraham Accords are a peace initiative started in 2020 by the Trump administration that seeks to get Arab countries to unilaterally recognize the State of Israel, without West Jerusalem [Tel-Aviv] itself making any concessions regarding the issue of Palestinian statehood. Through the accords, (…) the US was successful in getting the United Arab Emirates, Sudan, Morocco, and Bahrain to open up diplomatic relations with Israel. The US typically incentivized this by making unilateral concessions to these countries as part of a deal, such as removing Sudan from the State Sponsor of Terrorism list or recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara.
The Abraham Accords were not a serious peace initiative because all they did was bribe countries to effectively side with Israel and abandon Palestine, instead of seeking peace in one of the most prominent simmering conflicts in the region. Moreover, the accords’ true geopolitical intention was to facilitate the diplomatic isolation of Iran by weakening and splitting the anti-Zionist cause. The grander strategy, by extension, was to facilitate American hegemony over the Middle East, given Israel’s very close relations with the US (…) In promoting this, the US was happy to allow Israel under Netanyahu to continually move the goalposts towards a “one-state solution” and to effectively ignore Palestinian resistance, which it now describes as “unprovoked.”
However, this strategy has failed on numerous counts. First, the changes in the global geopolitical (…) has made Iran stronger, as it has gained political space for itself to avert sanctions and more readily develop its military capabilities (…)
Then, secondly, (…) Palestinians are effectively backed into a corner (…) Hamas calculates that by forcing Israel’s hand towards a full-scale war, it can rip the Abraham Accords to shreds and force the Arab world to tilt back to supporting Palestine, which in turn weakens the influence of the US in the Middle East and therefore forces it to engage more directly, consequently promoting a greater radicalization of Muslims all over the world.
(…) In conclusion, the Abraham Accords were a strategic mistake by the US that did not bring peace to the Middle East but fundamentally destabilized it and led to the biggest war Israel has been involved in since 1973. »

The Russia China encroachment is a very big thing. A massive game changer to the cold war landscape during the Sino Soviet split. That ended with Gorbachev heading to Beijing to seal the end of the split. Hence the colour revolution violence while he was there.
In the 90’s the Russian Federation under Yeltsin signed a friendship agreement with China. Moved forward with Putin coming to power and then began to blossom when Xi became the Chinese leader.
Many think that friendship is very recent and transactionary and can be easily split again, but it runs far deeper than that. I think it was Berlitic hosted a very interesting round table on the history of Chinese/Russian relations and it was only for the term of the split which began after Stalin died that the two countries have engaged in hostilities

Well lot of unknowns ahead.
One option for step 3 is to welcome IDF in close quarters combat hoping to incur high losses. But Israel gov isn’t stupid, they probably won’t do it.
Other possibility is probably hope that this intensity of bombing will finally force rest of the world, or at least Muslim neighbors finally do something.
What we don’t know is hidden in world changes in last few years. Iran is far stronger, Russia hell bent on finally routing NATO from Europe (and Israel is to ME same as NATO to Europe), US can’t “protect” SA and other Gulf states who are now looking new allies. Lot of other countries looking for new angles for power and resources (like Turkey). And not to forget, Israels main and only sponsor, who keeps them alive, is on it’s death bed, so clock is ticking.
So I don’t think we can judge this by comparing it to earlier Gazan attempts, game has changed.
And that US carrier (or two) will just be big juicy target that won’t be able to change anything on the ground. Bet first thing Pentagon did was notify Russians they will be sending it there, inside Kindzals range. So there is no stray missile.

There is nothing to “negotiate.”
Correct.
The two -state solution is impossible when looking at how Israel has grabbed land. . .here

Another point I would like to see discussed, and I could use a little Karlofi like historical back up here as I’m just going by memory.
Among the greatest supporters of creating the United Nations were the Middle East Muslim countries. Pretty much all in as I recall from what I read. When the UN voted to create Israel they unanimously opposed it.
They were out voted by the far more numerous western countries and those whose support they had under their control.
This in my mind is an essential part of intelligent discussion on the middle east and the seemingly ongoing carnage there.

Something that came to my mind is, will western (particularly European) governments use the coming muslim demonstrations/uprisings as a pretense to finally implement the lockdowns and/or martial law that they’ve been desperate to put in place ever since covid?
