Ukraine SitRep: Battlefield Reports Show Lack Of Armor And Certain Munitions

Certain trends on the Ukrainian battle field can be seen in the daily reports the Russian military puts outs.

When the Ukrainian president Zelensky visited Washington he was criticized for his failing military strategy:

Ukraine will retake the fiercely contested eastern city of Bakhmut from Russia by the end of the year, President Volodymyr Zelensky predicted during his visit to Washington, an assertion that shows the gulf between Kyiv and American war planners who believe that Ukraine should be focusing more on the south.

U.S. intelligence and military officials have long questioned why Ukraine has fought so hard in Bakhmut, the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the war. In March, Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III said the city was “more of a symbolic value than it is strategic and operational value.”

But Mr. Zelensky has been intent on trying to retake lost territory, and Ukraine has committed large numbers of troops and weapons to retaking Bakhmut and defending the surrounding Donbas region.

Some American officials say the fight in Bakhmut has become something of an obsession for Mr. Zelensky and his military leaders. The Ukrainians’ relentless focus on the city led them to believe that a possible victory was just around the corner, long after American officials had counseled them to move on to other targets because victory for either side would be pyrrhic.

I somewhat agree with U.S. officials on Bakhmut. It no longer has any strategic value for the Ukraine and its army is losing many soldiers and equipment in its continuing attacks there. In fact it is currently losing many more around Bakhmut than it is losing in its southern attack towards the Sea of Azov.

Today's report by the Russian Ministry of Defense lists 445 Ukrainian casualties in the Donetzk direction, mostly around Bakhmut, and only 100 casualties on the Zaporozhye front in the south. Yesterday's report had 305 versus 35. Last week's summary listed 1,455 Ukrainian troops killed and wounded around Bakhmut and 515 in the southern direction. There was no discernible progress in either direction.

Another trend noticeable in the daily reports is an increasing Ukrainian lack of armored vehicles.

A month ago the reported destruction of armored vehicles (including tanks) and unarmored trucks and pick-ups was still somewhat equal with, depending on the intensity of fighting, some 10-20 of both being destroyed per day. This has been the case since early March. My spreadsheet derived from the daily reports since March 2 sums up a total of 3,663 armored versus 3,600 unarmored vehicles as Ukrainian losses.

Over the last weeks that ratio has changed. Today the report says 12 armored versus 20 unarmored rides. Yesterday the ratio was 7 to 19. Last week's summary lists 84 armored versus 145 unarmored vehicles. Over the last 30 days the numbers are 419 armored versus 632 unarmored.

The ratio has not changed due to tactics. The first counter-offensive movements with high concentrations of tanks have failed. But those were only a few days with high armor losses. Ukraine has since emphasized infantry attacks. But the soldiers must still be transported towards their frontline positions. It is what armored vehicles, also called battle taxis, are used for as the frontline is usually under strong artillery fire. But it now seems that trucks and pick-ups are also used for this. They do not have a chance to survive under fire.

The lack of armor is likely caused by Russian kamikaze drones who are hunting down any single ride they can find. Replenishment from the West, which is running out of reserve vehicles, is no longer enough to replace what the Ukrainian army is losing on the battlefield.

Another trend can be seen in the type of Ukrainian artillery that the daily reports claim as destroyed. The Soviet era 152mm howitzer D-20 and MSTA-B as well as the self propelled 152mm Akatzíya are becoming less mentioned. There are now higher losses of 122mm D-30 and the self propelled 122mm 2S1 Gvodzdika. The bigger guns could reach further. Their diminishing numbers have been replaced by western derived 155 mm guns like the British made M-777 howitzer and various types of western self propelled 155mm howitzers like the Polish Krab systems. The daily reports show increasing losses of those. Losses of Soviet era Multi Launch Rocket Systems like the truck mounted Grad system have become a rarity on the Ukrainian side.

The observable change in destroyed guns likely reflects the availability of ammunition, or rather the lack of it. In February the New York Times reported that the production of 122mm ammunition in Bulgaria has been increased:

The factory stopped making the 122-millimeter shells in 1988 as the Cold War came to a close. But soon the assembly lines will be running again. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has turned Soviet-era arms and ammunition into critically important matériel as Western nations seek to supply Ukraine with the munitions it needs to foil Moscow’s assault.

And so in January, 35 years after the last 122-millimeter shells left the Terem plant, the company recommissioned production.

I have seen no such reports for a 152 mm production line. Nor can I find any report about the production of Grad missiles. The systems which use those no longer appear on the battlefield as they have become useless.

While probably not exact in their numbers the daily reports by the Russian Ministry of Defense do show certain trends on the battle field that  reflect the economic and logistic realities of the war quite well.

The overall high number of Ukrainian human losses in these reports, especially in the Bakhmut direction, have been confirmed by reports from the Ukrainian side. Videos also show that the Ukrainian side is using fewer armored vehicles and more trucks or even civilian vehicles. The losses of artillery pieces reflect the reported availability of certain types of ammunition.

Following the daily Russian reports is quite useful. I wonder why western media are not doing it.

Re: Federal Gov’t insolvency
1) It’s simple math to calculate the cost of interest on $33 billion Federal Debt at average interest rates on federal debt of 3%, 4%, and 5%.
4% on $33billion = $1.3 trillion
2) Federal Tax INCOME should be roughly $4billion in FY2024
3) $1.3 divided by $4 = 33%
, Barflies roughly 33% of Federal Income can be expected to go towards interest payments in FY 2024

What does GPS jamming along the Romanian coast have to do with NATO ISR assets being relatively protected?
Not being where they really are gives a certain protection.
On online flight trackers there is a time delay, and just approximation of NATO airborne ISR assets’ positions.
I believe that they are actually closer to Crimea than they appear to the public.
One can also see that AIS and ADS are time shifted, and those signals are lost at around 180 km around southern Crimea. Sometimes planes appear to fly deep into the no-go zone, and they reappear on a corrected flight path somewhat later and far from where they have been shown before.
It is also barely safe for civilian traffic.
But more info for those interested is here.

@158 Exile
Keep in mind that brigades now can no longer concentrate at the frontline, that is, within surrender distance, because they’d be immediately Kalibrated or made FABulous if they did. Platoon and squads are all that can concentrate now with any chance of survival.

At the last recording, death servicemen from Ukraine equates to 517,387 heads (excl. foreign mercenaries). The register also shows USA mercenaries cluster now exceeds the 17,000 mark {some flown to Germany and others left unattended to disintegrate on the wastelands of Ukraine). Other NATO members from the West are also excluded from that list.

I saw an alleged advertisement allegedly from the Russian side about two soldiers, neither of whom is wearing standard Russian uniform, one of whom talks about buying a flat in his aunt’s area of Kiev, the other wants to take his family to Odessa. This alleged advertisement did not make any allusion to free land.

Azerbaijan is demanding $100 billion from Armenia or they will take more territory. Sounds like Armenia is getting screwed under the lead of the Canadian dual citizen Pashinyan.

Pashinyan has been busy sacrificing what is not his (Artsakh), and will be more than happy to give Azerbaijan a land corridor to Nakhichevan as long as some fiction is maintained of “Armenian sovereignty” over that corridor.

Possible translation: Shoigu has told Putin that Ukraine can only sustain the offensive for about two weeks, at their current operational tempo and the discussion that followed would have looked at the military options available. As Ukraine seems to be re-enacting the death throes of the Third Reich it’s only natural for the West to portray Putin as an interfering Hitler-clone, given their propensity for inverting the truth.

Why is it that this catastrophic death injury rate is a total non event in Western Europe?
18 months of carnage and SFA.
Mind you that could be applied to the death’s of Ukrainian citizens in occupied Ukraine by Ukrainian artillery.
That was collateral damage as the word spinners put it.

I think that’s too high. I could see 250,000 battle deaths even 300,000 at the high end. But 500,000 plus KIA would be close to 25 percent of Ukraine’s total mobilized force, not including MIA/WIA/POW. At that rate they wouldn’t be able to launch offensive actions. Unless, Ukraine’s mobilized four million men, I suspect the number is lower.

If the Fed announced tomorrow that interest rates were going to be zero permanently, or Congress passed a law saying the same, then 10 year Treasury yields would drop to near zero immediately.
Posted by: The Accountant | Sep 26 2023 5:34 utc | 149
Not that easy. Holding a 10 years bond with 0 nominal yield will give a negative real yield due to inflation and still having the risk of default. Probably very few, if any, will buy that debt.

Some months ago there was an interview in Kiev with the largest Ukrainian telecom comp. (which was deleted shortly after).
Because the telecom manager was stating, that more than 400.000 SIM cards of soldiers hadn’t been active one month or longer.
Kiev made 10+ mobilizations, now more and more women are recruited, Ze wants a general mobil.
In Germany a 71yo soldier was trained for a Leopard tank; even the Russians are astonished how little scruples the Ukrainians show sending their troops into battle.
The HQ of this war is in USA, they don’t give a shit about Ukrainian lives.

Hey B,
thanks for your work and updates. I have one critic though:
Why do you rarely update about Russian losses and Ukrainian successes? I know that later suffers 10 times more.
But for example recently Ukraine attacked Crimea quite successfully. They destroyed relatively much with very precise NATO supported naval and air tactics. They paid high costs, but they did hurt Russia.
Would be clever to also cover that side of the situation in order to stay as objective as possible.
and any idea why Russia doesnt attack and take down NATO drones above the black sea?
Thanks

No doubt that the numbers given by the media are inaccurate. But let’s look at this realistically.
Ukraine’s 18-60 male population in Jan 2022 was about 15 million, excluding Crimea and Donbas. A further two-three million fled, and another one to two million were likely absorbed by Russia. So maybe Ukraine has 10-12 million men to draw on for mobilization.
The most they could probably mobilize is 3 million men, or 25-30 percent of its total male population, and roughly 14 percent of total population, which would be, just about, a higher percentage of mobilization than any major combatant in WWII. Germany had the highest percent of its total population mobilized at 14.3 percent.
I don’t think Ukraine has mobilized that many, and probably less than 2.5 million as of now. So half a million dead would be at a minimum 20 percent of its mobilized forces were KIA’d. That’s a pretty high rate.

“Not that easy. Holding a 10 years bond with 0 nominal yield will give a negative real yield due to inflation and still having the risk of default. Probably very few, if any, will buy that debt.

Entirely that easy, because the *only* aggregate alternative – that of holding floating US dollar reserves – would necessarily have a worse return. There’s a direct market relationship between the two.
Reserves cannot be got rid of in aggregate. There is no risk of default. In all cases US bonds are swapped into ‘certificates of deposit’, and that happens automatically as a function of the law. Both US Treasuries and Certificates of Deposit can be used to settle US tax debt. Simple arbitrage would therefore stop them dropping to any significant discount to the US dollar.

Thanks.
I am somewhat familiar with that site and ADSB/AIS in general as I have been running sites for years for entertainment. I keep track of the reported position of my house versus its actual position to watch the drift / satellites accuracy and occasionally plot that using an automatically generated KMZ file to check to see where my house has wandered around my neighbors yards.
The data from that site you mentioned comes from ADS-Exchange. They claim it to be unfiltered. ADSB-Exchange doesn’t have the largest number of feeders compared to other flight tracking sites. The site you mention also claims to use INS data being broadcast from aircraft although how is not explained.
The GPS signal contains data that gives an estimate of how big the ‘error’ should be. The site doesn’t seem to have any information derived from that.
From the site: “The formula used for each hex is percent_bad_aircraft = 100 * (num_bad_aircraft – 1) / (num_good_aircraft + num_bad_aircraft), where num_bad_aircraft is the number of aircraft that flew through the hex in the 24 hour period that reported bad navigation accuracy,”
Thus we don’t know how much the positions are offset. I doubt the positions are offset that great a distance — unless it means no position is being calculated. I emailed off the guy who runs that site for further information.
I don’t think that the GPS jamming protects aircraft flying much, as nobody is mentioning radar jamming to go along with GPS jamming, as radar would be used to target them.

@141 “As the reference says; like father, like son. Is it any wonder India is apoplectic with fury at Trudeau II’s stubborn preciousness?”
I agree that Justin Trudeau is a myopic, bloodthirsty nitwit controlled by Karl Scwab and the WEF but I disagree with putting Pierre Trudeau in the same category.
Pierre Trudeau was well read, incredibly smart, witty although, unfortunately a total leftist – when the US demanded Canada break off diplomatic and economic relations to Cuba in the 70’s, Pierre told the US to ‘fuck off’ or ‘fuddle duddle’.
Once in parliament an opposition party speaker attacked Pierre forcefully then Pierre , under his breath mumbled ‘fuck off’. The Conservative questioner asked Pierre what he had said and Pierre, wittily replied ‘fuddle duddle’-the man was quick on his feet.
To compare Justin with Pierre is not accurate.

I keep confusing Rob and Roy Schneider (and there was a book called Rob Roy). Roy Schneider was in Jaws. I had literally never heard of Rob Scheider until yesterday. Anyway, shouldn’t Elensky, y’know, be conscripting Hunka into the Ukranazi military? Maybe as a General (Field Marshal? No, that can only be Elensky).

From what I have seen on released videos:
Russia will attack any armored vehicle now, even one leaving the immediate point of contact. Means less targets overall, and a psychological constraint to the troops it has dropped off.
Ukraine is ONLY staying in the fight by using armed FPV quadcopters. Systems like Grad have no real use, too inaccurate, too easy to find. A small number of well hidden controllers with 10 quadcopters each is far more dangerous.
Longer range Lancet (which requires 1 or more relay UAV) shapes the battlefield against Ukraine. Heavy artillery = 20 km. FPV = 20 km, with right weather and line of sight conditions. Lancet = 30 km. LR Lancet has shown 60-70 km.
Recent train strike removed a whole battalion worth of equipment with just a few rounds. That was 60 km from the front line.
Polish supplied Krab’s have probably been wiped out. With recent Poland issues, they won’t be replaced, or any 155 mm ammo.

Thanks for even more info and your answer.
True, nobody claims the value of the offset in GPS guidance, but I can imagine it is in tens if not a hundred meters, possibly also at the certain heights too. Question is how many GPS sats are visible at once over there? Spoiling the time stamps can render GPS unusable, right?
Simplicius has some interesting observations on radars bouncing off ionosphere, beyond the horizon and that matter in his latest summary.
I am not sure what are the latest developments with Aries II and III mounted in Bombardiers and Beechcrafts that NATO is flying about there, but I can imagine that some radar suppression is active there, too.
I am also not really sure who alone is doing the GPS jamming along the Romanian coast. I can imagine that NATO does one for sure, however I am also certain that RF’s EW systems are amplified or relayed via RF’s navy ships in that area.
From what I know is that S-300 radar points a missile to a target, but the aiming and targeting is IR/optical, pending on a missile. There are around 10 different ones that can fly out of standard launchers. Some more are in testing phase for newer 400 and 500 and 550 AD systems which are capable to take those ISR assets far above Romania and beyond, apparently also guided from the orbit.
What was known for some time is that the latest iterations (launched in ’21, ’22 and ’23) of Russian milsats have EW capabilities, but of course nobody knows what is it precisely and what else can it be on them.
In the case of serious escalation, I expect to see much of the new stuff unleashed of such we do not even know it exists, also from both sides.
What is understood is that the NATO’s primary nightmare are RF’s space assets, namely small engineering satellites that move between orbits and can repair stuff or drag enemy objects out of orbits.

When I saw the ovation in the Canadian House honoring a member of the Waffen SS, I remembered that song, “Springtime for Hitler.” It is so ridiculous, that it really does look like a Mel Brooks movie. At the same time, Mrs Zelenskyy doubts that her husband will run again. Interesting, since he cancelled elections! A RUssian admiral who was supposed to be a victim of a Ukrainian missile has just posted a video of himself, in quite good shape I should add. It is so farcical that it must be designed to kill Putin with unstoppable laughter.

I will try not to sound like the snooty professor.
And all of this is in open source.
GPS sats orbit at 1/2 geo-synchronous orbits, meaning they circle twice in 24 hrs. The constellation is provided by inclining each sat at different angles to the equator. Since the constellation slowly changes the receiver has to choose which broadcast signal to use. At any time (between +/- 60 degrees) there are 5 to 9 sats available for use. (Triangulation really only requires 3 well placed ones) Ones low on the horizon are less likely to be used due to longer atmospheric signal delays.
A good handheld receiver will tell you how many sats are currently available, and where they are, and which ones it is using. Best accuracy is obtained when keeping the receiver stationary for 5 minutes or more.
The listed value for GPS is 16 ft (3 meters) CEP. (Circular Error Probability) That means you could be up to 16 ft off in any direction, including above and below ground.
So when you are flying over 1,000 ft, the errors mean very little. Most aircraft are over 16 ft long, and 16 ft of altitude doesn’t mean much unless you are skimming over a mountain pass.
The time stamp is embedded in the sat signal. You can’t disrupt it, without disrupting the whole signal. The signal itself is quite simple, and repeats based on its frequency.
“Disrupting” the signal is also quite complicated. Since it is sent from a large distance, you can’t jam it at the source. Since it is coming from many different angles, you can’t to a directional jamming. What you can do is overlay a similar signal at the same frequency(s) to spoof the receiver into using yours, or more likely to start dropping use of a valid signal in it’s computation. To do this over a large area is very hard, and needs lots of spoofers. To protect against a long range attack, you need a corridor of them along the assumed path of attack. That is why it is easier to protect a single small area vs a large one. You can surround a small area easier than a large one.

Pierre Trudeau was well read, incredibly smart, witty although, unfortunately a total leftist…

To compare Justin with Pierre is not accurate.

Good points. One important quibble is the categorization of neoliberal fascists as “total leftists.” Obama was often laughably labeled a Marxist/Socialist, notably without the slightest pushback from BHO himself or anyone else in the DP. This has become a common, nearly universal categorical error deliberately engineered through the Orwellian inversion of language in order to preemptively discredit and delegitimize any true leftist movement. It serves to reinforce the deeply-indoctrinated fear of socialism. If the neoliberal fascist Zionists of DP/RP uni-party can be widely associated with socialism, who in their laundered mind would ever embrace socialism?

“The new “liberator” of the Ukrainian people – Führer Hitler – reigned over the Berezhansk land. Portraits of Hitler in a long overcoat with a raised collar covering his menacing face with small, as if artificially attached whiskers under his sharp nose, and with the inscription “Hitler-liberator” hung in each classes The Führer immediately revealed his plans for Ukraine, liquidating the provisional Ukrainian government in Lviv and imprisoning Ukrainian leaders in concentration camps..”.

I read that in translate mode, and it’s not a straight line imo. There are other articles there.
The “liberator” in inverted commas suggests it’s the opposite of a liberator ….
Now I do get the OUN(B) group of Bandera being nationalist right wing fascist etc … but there is a section in that blog that makes the case clearer these guys were fighting everyone eg

Ukrainian People’s Self-Defence in the second half of 1943: on the way to creating an army
The article is devoted to the process of formation of Ukrainian People’s Self-Defense Corps, their training bases and personnel. The attempts of the Germans to liquidate the National Security Service are shown.
The problem of the defense of the population , ethnos-people-nation, is always relevant. Of course, the protective need is heightened when there are certain external threats. In the conditions of occupation, for the enslaved nation, the creation of self-defense structures becomes a necessity.
In the second half of 1943, threats to Ukrainians in Galicia were increasing simultaneously from three sides:
1) the USSR – a raid by the Sumy partisan unit under the command of S. Kovpak in June-July 1943;
2) Poland – by intensifying counter-insurgency actions of the Home Army;
3) Germany – in connection with the anti-insurgency actions of the German troops in Volyn-Polyssa, which began in June 1943 and the growth of anti-German sentiments in Galicia.
There were also reports of a radical break on the German-Soviet front, which made it clear that the Red Army had launched a counteroffensive and that the front would soon be on the western Ukrainian territory.
What ways out of this situation did the Ukrainian political circles of Galicia see?
Some, in the person of the liberal part of the Ukrainian population of Galicia before the German circles, were engaged in the formation of the SS “Halichyna” rifle division, while the radical ones, in the person of the Ukrainian nationalists, OUN (B), continued the formation of the rebel army.
Under the conditions of German occupation, the SS Rifle Division “Halychyna” was an attempt by Ukrainians to create their own legal army, while the Ukrainian rebels were outside the German legal system.
Because the proclaimed Act of Restoration of Ukrainian Statehood of June 30, 1941 was not recognized by the Germans, and independent aspirations of Ukrainians were condemned. Every Ukrainian nationalist was considered by the German military as a criminal and should be shot. Therefore, the question arises, how did the Ukrainians manage to create an underground army in such conditions?
If we consider the UPA as a mass armed resistance of the Ukrainian population of Volyn and Polissia to the German occupation regime in the form of several different military formations, which were organized into one structure in the spring of 1943 thanks to the purposeful policy of the OUN (B).

In another page they acknowledge having to stop fighting the Czechoslovak Republic army and surrender to the British army at the end of the war, where they were transported to Italy as POWs with the Germans …. so they were still seen as fighting against the Allied forces — even if they also fought against the Germans at times too.
This is why I say its still confusing unclear …. they didn’t see the USSR/Russians as the liberators, that’s for sure….. though maybe most Ukrainians did!

tried to post but kept being blocked for some keyword reasons maybe so hope this goes through. …. I read that linked page by Yaroslav HUNKA.
so all I will say is look at this other page, says the OUN(B) who were fighting USSR, Poland and Germans all. and later Czechoslovak Republic army when they surrendered to the British at the end of the war and shipped off to Italy as POWs ….. this site talks about a Galacia division but not a Waffen SS division fighting with the Germans or being directed by Himmler to go fight the Russians etc. .. so its confusing unclear in some respects as to who is who.
https://komb-a-ingwar.blogspot.com/2010/09/1943.html
also for reference though —

The OUN was mostly active preceding, during, and immediately after the Second World War. Its ideology has been described as having been influenced by the writings of Dmytro Dontsov, from 1929 by Italian Fascism, and from 1930 by German Nazism. The Organization pursued a strategy of violence, terrorism, and assassinations with the goal of creating an ethnically homogenous and totalitarian Ukrainian state.
The older, more moderate members supported Andriy Melnyk’s OUN-M, while the younger and more radical members supported Stepan Bandera’s OUN-B.

An MIC shill speaks.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin asked the Russian military not to arrange a hunt for Abrams
“Repetition of the situation with German Leopards is unacceptable, when they were hunted, I saw these calls. Play by the rules”
Let us recall that the United States promised Ukraine 31 American tanks
