Something like 600k people died in that war, almost all white. Do they count in your Karma calculatuons? Many countries had slavery that was ended in the 1800’s. Blacks in the UK are generally well integrated, are generally well educated, and generally speak English indistinguishable from other English people. Posted by: Contrarian_Ed | Sep 16 2023 7:45 utc | 325

If, at the end of the conflict, Europe is just scorched earth, so much the better. That is why the US is not concerned about DU or blowing up nuclear power plants in Ukraine, who cares if the land in that part of the globe becomes uninhabitable. The West is even confiscating the vehicles and possessions of Russian tourists visiting Europe in order to drive Russia and Europe part. “Left” and “Right” are outdated 20th Century political dogmas. Trying to understand the present time in those terms leads to bafflement. Today it is more like “us” and “them”, where “them” being powerful cliques attempting to re-introduce feudalism using opportunist quislings as tools. Those opportunist quislings in the past used to call themselves “left” … because they were always opportunists. And all of it amassed against one nation, Russia, simply holding onto 4 puny oblasts in the Donbass (~15% of Ukraine) where it decided to protect its disconnected ethnic nationals in Ukro-nazi-stan. It’s quite incredible when you realise just how many donors Zelensky accumulated in his travels last year and all the US/UN arm twisting which must have gone on. Posted by: je | Sep 16 2023 11:25 utc | 376 188 – I think the post-Soviet left, with some exceptions, has been disoriented. This makes it easier to drag large parts of it into identity politics, cultural wars and so on. There has been definite deterioration. Even among Trotskyists, traditionally hostile to socialism in power because it was “Stalinist”, nobody actually called the Nicaraguan Contras “freedom fighters”. But there have been plenty on the left who thought those fighting Gaddafi or Bashar Assad were “freedom fighters” and even “revolutionaries”. Posted by: Waldorf | Sep 16 2023 11:34 utc | 378 To add to 189, I recall graffiti by a Trotskyist group in Piraeus, Greece last year, which called for “Victory and peace for Ukraine” and signed it with the group’s initials and a hammer and sickle. In fact, their beloved Kiev government bans the hammer and sickle, though they may not know that. Not all Trots have this sort of political confusion, but many do. Posted by: Down South | Sep 16 2023 12:04 utc | 394 You would think the USA, or the 50 nation “coalition of the compromised” would offer to buy all the Ukrainian grain and transport it free of charge to the needy of the world, they are writing 100 million dollar checks to Ukraine every week, multi billion dollar ones every month so there’s no financial hang up. They can even offer to over pay for the grain as an extra gesture of support. Money transfer, good PR, and pressure the Russians on the grain corridor.
