Today is the 80th anniversary of liberation of Donbass from German Nazis and their Ukrainian Nazi henchmen.
The head of the Russian Military Historical Society on the Nazis’ attempt to “Ukrainize” Donbass (RIA Novosti, September 8, 2023 — in Russian)
The forced “Ukrainization” of Donbass did not begin in the post-Soviet period—even during the Great Patriotic War, the Nazis deliberately appointed to occupation authority positions collaborators associated with the so-called Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), banned in Russia, the scientific director of the Russian Military Historical Society Mikhail Myagkov said to RIA Novosti.
Exactly 80 years ago, on September 8, 1943, the Red Army liberated Donetsk (then Stalino), and then, on September 10, Mariupol, both of which were under Nazi occupation since 1941. The liberation of these cities became a key episode in the Battle for Donbass (August 13 – September 22, 1943).
“In Soviet times, they preferred not to focus attention on the fact that the Germans, having occupied Donbass, relied there on Ukrainian Nationalists. According to declassified documents of the Donetsk KGB archive, which later became the archive of the SBU, where in post-Soviet times, among others, patriots of Donbass and Russia worked, the German security police Schutzmannschaft that was active in the region employed Ukrainian Nationalists, who, by the way, had close ties with the Bandera movement, namely, the OUN,” Myagkov said.
Forced Ukrainization
The historian emphasized that the Germans purposefully relied on Nationalists, introducing in Donbass, which had always been a Russian-speaking region, newspapers in the Ukrainian language, where portraits of the Chairman of the Ukrainian People’s Republic Symon Petliura were printed, as well as the anthem “The Ukraine has not yet perished”, in Donetsk and Mariupol next to The Nazi banners there were the “zhovto-blakitnyy” [Ukrainian: yellow-blue — S] flags of the UPR.
“Portraits of Hitler on buildings were exhibited next to portraits of Taras Shevchenko, because the Germans believed that since this poet was Ukrainian, he was certainly against everything Russian. That was complete nonsense, but nevertheless, the Nazis and their accomplices still used him in their propaganda,” said the scientific director of the Russian Military Historical Society.
“Divide and rule”
Myagkov explained that the Nazis deliberately relied on the “Ukrainization of Donbass under the Nazi swastika,” since for the OUN accomplices, the Russian-speaking majority were ideological enemies, with whom they, relying on the Germans, fought “with particular enthusiasm.”
“It reached the point of absurdity. In the institutions of the occupation authorities they were forced to speak Ukrainian, which almost no one knew in Donbass; they had to speak in ‘surzhik’—a mixed language consisting of Russian and Ukrainian words. The Germans understood perfectly well that Russians and Ukrainians come from a common root, therefore, following the principle of ‘divide and rule,’ they had to be separated as much as possible. The Americans are doing the same thing, encouraging the conflict between Ukrainian and Russian speakers, which has resulted in today’s tragedy,” the agency’s interlocutor emphasized.
The importance of Donbass
Speaking about the importance of the region during the Great Patriotic War, the historian recalled that Donbass was the “industrial heart” of the Soviet Union—in Donetsk alone, 5% of all coal mining in the USSR was carried out and 7% of all metallurgical enterprises were located.
“The fascists [Nazis — S], not unreasonably, believed that by depriving the USSR of Donbass, they would bleed its industrial potential and, accordingly, increase their own. However, the Soviet Union managed to evacuate many enterprises that were working until the last minute,” Myagkov explained.
For example, the Donetsk Metallurgical Plant kept producing metal right until the invaders entered the city in order to pour it into ladles and other valuable equipment that could not be evacuated in time.
“Due to the characteristics of the terrain in Donbass, a steppe region, it was impossible to establish effective work of the partisan movement, as in Belarus and Central Russia. At the same time, a powerful underground arose there; just the Young Guard alone was significant, and there were many such groups,” the Russian Military Historical Society said.
Nazi crimes
Speaking about the crimes of the Nazis in the region, the historian emphasized that during the years of occupation of Donbass, the Nazis committed one of the most terrible acts of genocide of the Soviet people. Namely, the notorious mine shaft 4/4 bis located in Donetsk.
“The most massive case of genocide of the Soviet people in the Ukrainian SSR after Babi Yar took place in Donbass—according to modern estimates, up to 100 thousand Russians, Jews and Ukrainians dissatisfied with the occupation regime were thrown into the Donetsk mine shaft 4/4 bis. Most of them were shot, some were buried there alive,” Myagkov said.
