The MoA Week In Review – (Not Ukraine) OT 2023-213

Last week's post on Moon of Alabama:

> My excuse for posting only three pieces this week  Yes and no. After a rather rainy summer around my block it finally warmed up a bit. So I got a bit lazy. But I also read a lot which may help with future pieces. – b. <

> Delaying deliveries of Abrams tanks could ensure that it enters service after the current period of intensified hostilities has ended, after which the vehicles will be less likely to suffer losses which could affect the class’ reputation – or that of the American defence sector. <

Its a bad summer for jet engines.
In addition to the counterfeit parts found in General Electric and Safran engines, now F35 engine supplier RTX (Pratt & Whitney) announced today that they will take a $3+ billion charge to address defective parts in their GTF motors.

By Alan Kline – Senior Editor, Washington Business Journal
Sep 11, 2023
Shares of Arlington-based RTX Corp. (NYSE: RTX) were down nearly 5% in premarket trading Monday after the company announced that it will take $3 billion pretax charge this quarter tied to its recent disclosure of a rare defect in powdered metal its Pratt & Whitney division uses to manufacture engine parts.
The company formerly known as Raytheon Technologies said that beyond the hundreds of engines it plans to remove form service for routine inspections, an additional 600 to 700 engines will be removed from service this year and early next year, resulting in increased maintenance costs and more aircraft on the ground.
The $3 billion charge is likely to wipe out profits for the quarter and sharply diminish full-year profits. RTX reported a profit of $1.3 billion in this year’s second quarter and net income of $5.2 billion in 2022.
RTX first disclosed the discovery of the defect in its second-quarter earnings results in July. Because of the defect, Pratt & Whitney will need to accelerate the pace of inspections of its PW1100G-JM engine fleet that powers Airbus A320neo jets for customers such as Delta Air Lines Inc. and Spirit Airlines Inc.
The defect, which can reduce the lifespan of its engine turbine discs, affects engines produced between late 2015 into the third quarter of 2021.

https://www.bizjournals.com/washington/news/2023/09/11/rtx-pratt-whitnet-engine-defect.html

I would add that the FAA is taking a light touch with this known defect, deferring to the insurance industry to ground the effected airframes.

There are two versions of the Munich Agreement, one is that it was a cowardly capitulation (lots of historians) and the other is that it was an adroit manoeuvre by Chamberlain and Daladier to prevent Hitler having what he wanted, a small war in 1938 against Czechoslovakia (i.e. his claims over Sudetenland were a pretext that the Czechs were supposed to reject) and to keep the Red Army out of central Europe (i.e. Soviet aircraft were flying to Czech air bases ready to intervene in a German-Czech war) which I’ve only seen in “A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II” by Gerhard L. Weinberg (2005) You might want to consider that during the war he said that he had only been bested diplomatically by Chamberlain in 1938 and Franco in 1940.
Take yer pick.

I have to admit that I gave up before the end, my brain could just not stand such an expanse of fatuous and highly misleading nonsense hanging off some core threads of fact. So I totally agree with MoaMetal’s comments.
============================================
I replied to comments lower down that I saw first and missed yours. Well, obviously we don’t agree (!) but I very much appreciate your rebuttal and think you make some excellent points, moreover with little rancour. That the Chinese have high approval of their government seems true and I found some of his criticisms of China, though fair viz China 50 years ago, didn’t sit well.
I don’t agree with you about the distinction between the Owners and Managers. That is not what he meant by ‘Managerial Class’ which is a style of rulership by managing due to the increasing complexity of fast-growing, largely urban industrialization-driven societies which cannot run without extensive expert management. Corporations are part of this management function.
Ever since I was a boy in England I felt that there was something wrong with what I dubbed ‘The System’. Books like Brave New World and 1984 reinforced that sense. Moving to the States in the 70’s, the USG felt part of that same impersonal, machine-like, overbearing ‘System’. This article helped me understand the processes involved and even if he mischaracterized contemporary China in places, not all he said about the governance process there strikes me as wrong – certainly some of the quotes he offered from Mao dovetailed effortlessly into the points he was making.
Anyway, thank you again for your comment.

Reminder – only 19 days left until October.
That was when the cretins in the EU claimed that Turkey would ratify Swedens’ NATO membership.
According to Naked Capitalism, no bill has been submitted to the Turkish Parliament. And Erdo is playing wiseguy, again:

Turkiye has not approved Sweden’s NATO application. Sweden is not prosecuting Koran-burners, seeing that as protected free speech. The Turkiye parliament has to approve any NATO application. Even though Erdogan agreed to Sweden’s entry in Vilnius, he now can’t deliver even if he wanted to. And the tone of his remarks below is that Erdogan is not trying to whip his Parliament to get the votes either.

Looks like the Vilnius agreement was more made-up bullshit from NATO cucks.

Fact is Scorpion should be banned from this site and all others it might infest with it’s extreme deceitful sophistry, manipulation, and lies. It deserves no more than condemnation, ‘invective’ and worse. It’s a sociopath plain and simple. MoA is probably the only place left online where it hasn’t been banned.
======================================
Spoken with the true voice of fascistic intolerance so well evidenced by most on the left these days. Totalitarians all!
Sociopath etc: all I did is warmly recommend an essay which I found clarifying. I find these topics interesting and don’t understand the virulent reactions. Maybe you should look in the mirror to find a sociopath! There is no ill-will on my part, I assure you. I don’t have a side in this, being neither pro nor anti communist or any other ism or nation for that matter. My working hypothesis is that all nations and organizations, like individuals, are a mix of what can imprecisely be called ‘good’ and ‘bad’ (or evil). That’s about it. I also feel that most of what we are told is lies, including from Russia and China, so am generally a skeptic of all governments. I also hope that everything turns out well for ordinary people.
Contrary to bevin’s projections, am not a Tory! Am not a Christian either, but respect many of the things most traditional Christians (including possibly Tories!) value, which is family, nation, God etc. I do not wish to destroy such people or traditions and feel that the continuous leftist drive to overthrow is more destructive than beneficial, so there I have a bias.
Perhaps some of the reactions to questions I raise about China and Russia reflect strong emotional investment in the US-as-evil-Empire POV. Fair enough, but I don’t share such investment either way.

I’ve had some mutually beneficial exchanges with Scorpion over the past couple of years, or at least mutually agreeable in tone. I don’t want to get involved in whatever “beef” you may have with him, but I’m curious as to what may have transpired prior to the cited comment @54.

A. See: Posted by: MoaMetal | Sep 10 2023 21:52 utc | 37

Hopefully he can weigh in and present his own side at some point but my take on Scorpion is that he makes it intentionally difficult to pin him down on where he really stands on numerous issues of great import to the world and the bar. Granted, that could also mean – and in some cases I’m sure it does – that he himself hasn’t made any “final” decisions on some topics (I haven’t either other than that I know which “side” of the spectrum I can trust and which I cannot).

A. You got it. I really don’t have an axe to grind and indeed am quite open minded. Until 2020 I was all-in on the BRICS and multipolarity agenda but after Covid I smell a rat and haven’t managed to clarify what’s going on. The Article in question has helped, though I feel that some of Roger’s objections have merit and will bear them in mind when re-reading it.

But IIRC, he was lower middle class UK and has somehow retired in Mexico after a career as some type of “guru” (no offense intended in the use of that word) of transcendental Eastern quasi-religious something or other and has done quite nicely for himself (financially and otherwise). But I often do get a slight whiff of – if not fascism or overt racism or orientalism – a person who despises what he refuses to call “the left” and especially those leftists of the Asian or Bolshevik persuasions.

A. Upper middle class. But from a problematic family I had to leave when still a teenager, so truncated/fractured national and education profile. I was never a ‘guru’ though did teach Tibetan Buddhism related courses. I also worked as administrator in related non-profit foundations until the work dried up in the 90’s. I don’t despise ‘the left’ per se but I do intensely dislike both rude behavior on otherwise intelligent forums like this and also intolerance. I find the left to be generally very judgmental and intolerant these days and respond accordingly. It’s not the opinion but the attitude I dislike.
Am baffled by some of the responses, but sometimes I post too much. Still, in this thread I offered something I thought of great interest and in return am accused of being a fascist sociopath who should be banned from this and all other fora. Phew!
Such intolerant invective reflects more about the person making it than to whom it is directed.

@denk, #104:
One hundred fifty years ago when the Chinese Exclusion Act was enacted, poor ole Chinamen were begging/smuggling to get to the West for a livelihood. It’s now a different scenario. A new Chinamen Exclusion Act would solidify modern Chinamen’s suspicion of Western prejudices and ill intentions, help them make up their mind on where to raise their kids.
I for one welcome Ms Freeland’s diatribe against us 🙂

There’s one difference between Ukraine and Israel, which Zelensky does not see. Ten of millions of Protestant fanatics in the USA think they need a Jewish state in order to bring Jesus back and End the World some time soon. I’m pretty sure Ukraine does NOT figure in their future history.

I am entirely opposed to banning or censoring your comments, or anyone else’s. Although in your case it could be argued that they are predictable to the extent that it might save time if you were to post a number indicating which of your three fixed ideas you are promoting.
1. That the spiritual is more important than the material, you don’t have an axe to grind and human nature ensures that change is impossible
2/ That Senator McCarthy was right about the Communist Party of China. As was Chiang Kai-sheck.
3/ That Lenin and Trotsky were employees of the Rothschild family and the Bolsheviks more or less wiped out the population of Russia, before moving over to China and killing another billion.

This article, dated early August, is worth reading. Evidently the US National Security Advisor understands what neo-liberalism means:
“Sullivan stated that the changing global economy had left behind lots of working Americans…”
http://www.defenddemocracy.press/us-national-security-advisor-enough-of-the-neoliberal-system/
@ bevin | Sep 11 2023 15:06 utc | 94

Caveat emptor!
Sullivan also said: “…the Biden Administration is developing a new global labor strategy that advances workers’ rights through diplomacy…”
Since when did Biden, the people in his WH Administration or anyone in the Government, the Democrat party, the DNC or the US Congress ever care about workers rights – post-FDR?
Now out of the blue, suddenly in 2023, “they” are going to advance worker’s rights globally? If anyone believes this bull pucky you have some serious problems to deal with. 🙂
The above is prima facie evidence of the degree to which Sullivan is lying throughout that speech. It is “self-evident” iow, or it should be.
Neoliberalism means: Lying! Period. Lying through your teeth every time you open your mouth. Why? “Because people will be stupid” (I’m quoting an economics history professor there)
So yes, Jake Sullivan sure knows what Neoliberalism means and he knows everything he is saying is for effect. He doesn’t believe any of it or care about anyone but himself and his kind.
This article is not worth reading, and that “defenddemocracy.press” would push it as if it’s useful or true is a disgrace (but standard gullible form.) defenddemocracy.press is probably just another neoliberal PR arm spreading the Lies far as wide and undermining any ideas or systems that may be considered a threat to their global ideological / propaganda power today.
Sorry. If anyone is going to read that material, at least first understand that all of it Lies and Sullivan is Lying all the time: Only them might you get to understand what you are up against here.
That “The Market Knows Everything – Better than everyone and anything else” is Holy Scripture to all Neoliberal Ideology. It is the God of their Religion. Make no mistakes. And they will happily manipulate the “Data” being spat out by that Market anyway they can that serves their own purposes and power. Period.
So when Sullivan is reported as saying the following – Know that he is Lying and he Knows that he is Lying:

Sullivan stated that all policies are based on a single assumption: “There was one assumption at the heart of all of this policy: that markets always allocate capital productively and efficiently.”
Emphasizing that the shocks caused by the global financial crisis and a global pandemic have revealed the limits of these prevailing assumptions, Sullivan added “in the name of oversimplified market efficiency, entire supply chains of strategic goods—along with the industries and jobs that made them—moved overseas.”
Sullivan also highlighted that the assumption that broad trade liberalization would help America export goods, not jobs and capacity, was “a promise made but not kept”.

He does not care one bit about any of that. They do not care what the “system” is doing, now or yesterday or tomorrow. Saying the prior system failed and now look, hey presto, we admit our mistakes, so here is another system “we promise will do better, and protect Worker’s Rights and the Middle Class, and ……” – is all part of the Kabuki Theater.
They lie about anything and everything. That is what Neoliberals do. Why? Again, because people will be stupid. They know that and they use it all the time. It’s almost a Motto for them.
Today they will promote Neocon ideology over Ukraine, providing clear descriptive reasons for this being the essential truths of today – then tomorrow they will jettison that. But nothing changes in reality.
They will say anything they need to at any time to retain Power.

They will even publicly disagree with each other on the same team to present a false public image that real genuine policy disagreements and in-depth discussions to obtain better Policy outcomes to serve the people of the Nation are for real.
More Lies.

Crooke’s SCF essay is out and was available all day, but nobody has said boo about it, “The Mackinder Strategic ‘Bible’ Reconsidered”. It’s dense and requires some unpacking but the main point is clear: The Outlaw US Empire has failed to heed the advice of its most important geopolitical gurus and will suffer the consequences. The G-20 outcome only serves to solidify Crooke’s thesis as the combined Global South is now a Third geopolitical power arrayed against the Empire. IMO, we are closing in on the moment when the Empire will speak but no nation will heed its admonitions and ignore the threats it issues.

Another article by Jonathan Cook on climate change. This is a follow up to his recent piece on the subject.
He concludes with this update:”Prof Barbara Hariss-White has kindly alerted me to an interesting new essay in the London Review of Books by Prof Geoff Mann, which deals with questions of uncertainty and politics around climate modelling, as my “rebutter” thinks he is doing. But Mann reaches conclusions that are directly opposed to my critics’ do-nothing approach.
“Mann admits that predictions based on climate models must concede a significant degree of uncertainty. Put most starkly, our own reckless actions warming the planet could all be reversed overnight should a mega-asteroid crash into Earth, throwing up vast quantities of dust that block out sunlight. Then, we would be facing global cooling, not warming.
“There are too many variables to make crystal-ball predictions. But, as Prof Mann also notes, the direction of travel we have set ourselves on is clear to all but the most deluded. In reality, he observes, the fact of uncertainty ought to have us more worried, not more complacent:
“The point of highlighting the vertiginous degree of uncertainty is that we might not be making nearly as big a deal of climate change as we should. We are, as a result, tragically under-prepared for the possibility of really bad outcomes, yet at the same time far too confident in our level of preparation.
“Science is dealing with probabilities, and the broad range of probability is that we are in serious trouble and that time is not on our side. Prof Mann makes a further, important point about our current political responses to the climate crisis:
“A precise calculation of the ‘optimal’ carbon tax is nothing more than a claim that the best way forward is to perch the gargantuan machine of contemporary capitalism as close as possible to the precipice without tipping us all over the edge. That is neither efficient nor optimal. It is a myopic and recklessly arrogant approach to the unknown fate of life on earth.
“What we need is a much more honest assessment of what we do not or cannot know, which is, among other important things, where the edge is. We might, in fact, be past it already, treading thin air like Wile E. Coyote before the fall.
“We need to stress too that conclusions about our direction of travel are not uncertain – and do not depend primarily on evidence.
“Even were there no scientific data yet showing an impending climate crisis, even were there no real-world evidence that “normal” weather is breaking down – and there are both – it would still be clear that our actions are driving us towards a climate catastrophe. Why? Because our societies are committed by every parameter to endless growth – especially in terms of resource extraction and economic growth – that conflicts in its very essence with a bounded, finite eco-system that has taken billions of years to find the delicate balance necessary to support us, a highly conscious life form.”

Z, thanks for your words. Please don’t upset yourself!!
@bevin: based on the phrasing of the questions, i.e. laced with snide, I feel trying to answer them a waste of both of our time. So I pass.
About ad hominems:
Ad hominem 1: exists within civil conversations but is deficient because rather than address issues raised one resorts to ‘attacking the messenger’. Basically it goes: the person who wrote this is dishonorable so not worthy of respect, therefore they or their posts should be ignored or ridiculed. It often works in that the conversation ends; but nobody learns from it, therefore it steals peoples time, which is all we have in this fleeting, magical shared realm.
Ad hominem 2: the same but at higher volume with deliberately hyperbolic negative emotion. This also wastes precious time but further encourages both the person attacking and the person receiving to go into Angry Hell. This turns precious time into a vehicle for worsening ourselves and our world.
Ad hominem 3: responding in kind to outrage X or a #2. Same as #2.
I apologize for any poorly worded or seemingly inflammatory posts but I don’t think the ad hominems are warranted. I welcome disagreement and discussion, but not ad hominem. Everyone is free do what they please, but perhaps ‘ad hominers’ might do well to consider ceasing and desisting as per b’s request. For all our sakes.

What is called for is self-restraint by the poster Scorpion.
Numerous times over the past two years of his presence here in the bar
he has promised to reduce both the volume and the number of his posts.
It doesn’t happen.
The volume and frequency of Scorpion’s posts dominate many threads.

Or as Elon say’s we are running an experiment. Do we really want to find out? The conservative approach is to assume that the global warming thesis is real and move to address it.
In the long run investment in dollars is 10 billion a year and that resource use will decline since many green energy technologies can be easily recycled and used again and again.

Defective Pratt & Whitney GTF engines are implicated in the recent fire onboard an Air China Airbus A320neo en route to Singapore.

Air China fire likely caused by engine failure

By Wang Xiaoyu | China Daily | Updated: 2023-09-12 09:15
Air China said early Monday that a mechanical engine failure likely caused a fire on one of its passenger flights to Singapore a day earlier, and all 155 people onboard had been safely evacuated.

Air China said on Monday that a preliminary investigation shows that the incident was caused by an engine failure and a further probe is underway.

Will China force the grounding of the defective engines, just as they did with the 737max when the FAA looked away?

His is such a constant and heavy presence that open discussion is stifled.
@ waynorinorway | Sep 12 2023 4:51 utc | 136

Hi, I don’t understand how that can be? I have blocked him but others only need to scroll past – nothing S says nor how often S writes actually stops everyone else carrying on and discussing whatever they want – unless they allow themselves to be drawn into his “discussion topics” and ignore their own interests.
I do understand how multiple posts on almost every page is distracting and a pain, but not that it stifles open discussion. Just ignore the guy fixes that. If less people replied his posts would be reduced by 90% – I’ve done my part in that regard. 🙂
Of course newbies or the unaware then come along and will engage with S anyway …. so back to square one – that is were the ‘banning’ option arises, that and the type/style of engagement S offers also justifies such an action imo – while opinions vary of course as they should, for it isn’t my call to make – I believe my interpretations of what I see are accurate, but who cares and why should they?
So it’s up to B I assume, and if S has been here for 2 years (really?) then B doesn’t have a problem. I must say, it sure is a curiosity. Cheers to all. 🙂

The arrangement as I read it described involves an exchange of 5 prisoners on each side, and a “release” of some Iranian money to be used for humanitarian goods and services to be bought by Iran (part of BRICS). It read it as a win for Iran. I am still wondering about the sequence of events, who has to move first.

“…according to Kristy, there are many benefits to inviting a third person into the relationship. “We really need someone to settle whether we’re getting delivery from Pizza Pizza or Pizza Hut,” she explains. “We can’t expect them both to come in one night. That would just be silly.”
At press time, no queer women were available for comment as they were too busy enjoying lasting, fulfilling relationships with their ex-girlfriend’s ex-girlfriend.”
I’m not sure which lesbien-related link from La Presse to post so I’ll just link to the opinion piece by Hillary Clinton. Translated from the Atlantic.

Riffing on the Jonathan Cook article linked by Bevin # 124
The powerful and arrogant, however increasingly technologically equipped, will not deliver or attempt to deliver public policy in the interests of their publics because they are incapable of acting such due to being who they are. This is of course completely unacceptable. Is that reason to act like an ostrich, a denier of facts, or a denier because of uncertainties? For some, yes, evidently. Common sense says, “ Pull the knife out of the wounded world and stop the bleeding,” then, if you are so inclined, search for someone to blame. Good luck to us all.

This image, adapted from Climate Reanalyzer, shows that on September 8, 2023, the North Atlantic sea surface reached a new record high temperature, of 25.4°C, even higher than the record reached the day before.

A final musing for the day As the 400 year comet visits the solar system today and passing almost unnoticed till the last moment. I wondered how the World was being transformed then as it is now. A quick recap from wiki.
Astronomy, Religion, Culture in Europe
July 16 – A great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, with the planets only 5 arc minutes apart, the closest between 1226 and 2874. This conjunction likely goes unobserved, as it occurs near the Sun and the telescope has been invented only recently.
1623 papal conclave: Pope Urban VIII (Maffeo Barberini) succeeds Pope Gregory XV, as the 235th pope.
October 20 – Cardinal Antonio Marcello Barberini informs Galileo Galilei that his brother, the newly-enthroned Pope Urban VIII, wishes to receive a visit from Galileo.
Gabriel Bethlen, Prince of Transylvania, issues an order, dated at Kolozsvár/Klausenburg/Cluj, that allows Jews to settle, trade freely and practice religion in Transylvania, and exempts them from wearing the usual Jewish sign.
Procopius’ long-lost Secret History is rediscovered, in the Vatican Library.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procopius
Imprisoned Italian Dominican philosopher Tommaso Campanella’s utopian The City of the Sun is published in Latin (as Civitas Solis) in Frankfurt.
Italian poet Giambattista Marini’s epic L’Adone is published in Paris.
November 8–December 5 – Publication between these dates in London of the “First Folio” (Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies), a collection of 36 of the plays of Shakespeare (died 1616), half of which have not previously been printed.
————-
All the World was a stage Whilst European kingdoms played out their thirty year wars, set Protestant against Catholic whilst at the same time trying to intermarry.
England
Viscount Falkland, England’s Lord Deputy of Ireland, issues a proclamation ordering all Roman Catholic priests to leave Ireland, affecting negotiations over the “Spanish match” (which resume in March). When Charles, Prince of Wales, the future King Charles I of England, travelling incognito with royal favourite George Villiers, arrives in Madrid to pursue negotiations over the “Spanish match”, the Protestant Charles’s proposed marriage with the Catholic Habsburg Infanta Maria Anna of Spain.
Negotiations, resumed in March, of the planned “Spanish match” break down.[8] On October 5, Prince Charles returns to England from Spain without a bride.
—————
But the English colonisation of The North America’s and the brutality and genocide begins. To produce the greatest imperial invaders of all for the twentieth century.
North America
March 5 – The first American temperance law is enacted, in Virginia.
May 22 – After negotiations for the release of English women taken from Jamestown in the British North American colony of Virginia, conducted between Captain William Tucker of the English settlers and Chief Opchanacanough of the Powhatan Confederacy (Tsenacommacah), the English arrange a banquet with the Powhatan, and the drinking of wine.[2] The wine is poisoned and many of the Powhatan Indians die, while 50 more are killed while ill. This follows the massacre of 347 English colonists of March 22, 1622, in the Powhatan uprising. Opchanacanough escapes, and the 20 women never return home.[3]
June 14 – The first breach-of-promise lawsuit: Rev. Gerville Pooley, in Virginia, files against Cicely Jordan, but loses
uly 10 – The English ship Anne becomes the third vessel to bring settlers to Plymouth Colony,[5] the Puritan settlement in modern-day Massachusetts, carrying more settlers, after the Mayflower on November 21, 1620, and the Fortune on November 9, 1621
july 30 (probable date) – The second Thanksgiving is celebrated in Plymouth Colony.[6]
* August 5 – The English ship Little James arrives at Plymouth Colony, 26 days after the Anne.[7]
In British America:
* On the coast of Massachusetts Bay, the settlement that will become the City of Gloucester, Massachusetts, is first inhabited by men from Dorchester, Dorset, England.
* On the coast of New Hampshire, the settlement of Hilton’s Point, which will become Dover, New Hampshire, is established by men from London, England, the first European settlers in the state.
European Adventurers in the East
Voyage of the Pera and Arnhem to Australia: Captains Jan Carstenszoon of the Arnhem and Willem Joosten van Coolsteerdt of the Pera depart on an expedition for the Dutch East India Company from Ambon, Maluku (Amboyna) to explore the Australian coast.
March 9 – Amboyna massacre: Ten English merchants in the service of the British East India Company, together with nine Japanese and one Portuguese, are executed by agents of the Dutch East India Company in Ambon, Maluku (Amboyna
April 29 – A fleet of 11 Dutch ships depart for the coast of Peru, seeking to seize Spanish treasure.
May 8 – A Dutch East India Company party, led by explorer Jan Carstenszoon, fights a skirmish with 200 indigenous Australian Wik peoples.
The MENA
Murat IV, age 11, succeeds his deposed uncle Mustafa I as Ottoman Emperor.[9] Because Murat is a minor, his mother, Kösem Sultan, serves as regent until 1632.
October 9 – Kara Mustafa Pasha is replaced as the Ottoman Governor of Egypt on orders of Sultan Murad IV.
The Battle of Anjar is fought in modern-day Lebanon as the Druze emir Fakhr al-Din II defeats an invasion by Mustafa Pasha al-Hannaq, the Ottoman Governor of Damascus, and takes him prisoner.
The 1623 Malta plague outbreak is contained after killing around 40 people on the island of Malta.[12]
The Old Continent
January – Battle of Mbanda Kasi: Forces from the Kingdom of Kongo defeat the Portuguese.
Asia
* April 11 – King Gwanghaegun of Joseon (in Korea) is deposed in the Injo coup and succeeded by King Injo.
* April 29 – A fleet of 11 Dutch ships depart for the coast of Peru, seeking to seize Spanish treasure.
* May 5 – Raja Gaj Singh of Marwar, along with Mahabat Khan and Parviz Mirza, are deputized by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in India to hunt down Jahangir’s rebel son, Shihab-ud-Din Muhammad Khurram. The search fails, and Khurram will become the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan after Jahangir’s death in 1627.
* uly 15 – Trịnh Tùng is deposed as ruler of the kingdom of Đại Việt in northern Vietnam after more than 50 years. His son, Trịnh Xuan, burns the palace. Trinh Tung is carried away by his servants in a sedan chair and abandoned in the road to die. Another son, Trịnh Tráng, succeeds to the throne of Đại Việt
* ——————————————
And so it went then as it goes now 400 years later, hopefully the Comet may not see the likes of us still at it again on its next return.
