News & views (not related to the war in Ukraine) …

Comments

It is late in this thread to be making important comments, so perhaps it is fitting that I bring this link to what is happening in tiny New Zealand here now. If anyone wants to further discuss the subject – I know ‘global warming’ comments can be quite heated – my own emphasis would be that this short article targets Black Rock as a very powerful organization, so the facts it presents are worth consideration.
https://thedailyblog.co.nz/2023/08/12/blackrock-fossil-fuel-capitalism-and-global-warming/
I will also comment that the subject of the approaching election in NZ brings this issue into focus as a pivotal one for the politics there, so it has importance as maybe a toe in the door for the multipolar agenda in the Southern Pacific.

In reference to my comment at Posted by: juliania | Aug 12 2023 11:37 utc | 102, it forcibly comes to my mind that while the term ‘colonization’ can be used against what some European countries used in the past to promote their own economic aims (thinking of the recent discussion linked in this thread from Michael Hudson and friends), it also extends to what big corporations are currently engaged in. It would appear that they now ‘colonize’ in much the same way.

In upcoming decades, there won’t be enough people with the skills necessary to develop insane industries in Russia. A lot of those people are leaving.

@ juliania | Aug 12 2023 11:57 utc | 103
Precisely. To the point where there’s scarcely any distinction, anymore, between external and internal colonization — whether attention is turned to victims or perpetrators of colonial terrorism. Thanks for the piece about Black Rock greenwashing.
Speaking of colonialism, to me there’s potent symbolism in the burning of a legendary banyan tree, planted in Lahaina, Maui, exactly 150 years ago, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of colonial contact. I haven’t found a reliable opinion on whether that tree, the biggest banyan in USA, could possibly survive. At any rate, the incineration of Lahaina marks a 200-year colonial-contact anniversary, five years after a Sierra foothills town called Paradise went up in racing flames. 85 perished in in Paradise, back in 2018. Lahaina’s death-toll is 80 and rising, at this writing.
Was this tragedy due to bad land management, unprepared infrastructure, or extraordinary storms? The answer is yes, yes, and yes.

Thank you for commenting, Aleph. I hadn’t known about the fires in Hawaii – that is most sad. The maori legends say the ancestors came down from ‘Hawaiiki’ so there is close relationship and will be sorrow for the losses of life. Rather like the town of Paradise in California with the savage wind through the canyon making a firestorm impossible to do anything, even no time to escape – melted boats in the harbour – that’s a new one I think, that a typhoon would add to fires in such a terrible way.
God bless Hawaians and island people everywhere.

Craig Murray has a very logical explanation for the assassination of Presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.
It turns out that Fernando was the castalust for the story in The Guardian about Manafort (Trump’s former campaign manager) meeting Assange in the Ecuadorian Embassy.
The story, of course was and is a complete fabrication, although The Guardian, intent on going down with the Capitalist ship, stands by it.
But read Murray, on a subject about which he knows as much as he thinks he does.

maybe im blindly optimistic, but Murray seems to be coming around a bit, after his continued persecution by the British State. at least to the point where he sees how corrupt the west is, he is still pretty blinkered about Putin and Russia.

An article I found recently in the CIA’s Electronic Reading Room:
“How Britain Runs the ‘Radical Left’: New information obtained from Tavistock agent Michael Vale”
Jeffrey Steinberg, January 16, 1979: https://t.ly/qtWkK
The full article is available at https://rb.gy/x04j6
It argues that “British Intelligence, through its Tavistock Institute-centered Psychological Warfare Division (PWD) maintains thorough control over the ‘political left’…”
A few excerpts (emphasis added):

With only the rarest of exception, the “radical left” internationally is organized as an interfaced nesting of political cults controlled through the Psychological Warfare Division of British Intelligence, a branch associated primarily with the wartime Tavistock Institute in London.
… Within the Federal Republic [of Germany], the included objective has been the splitting out of the youth wing of the ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD) into a left-radical oppositionist party embodying the proterrorist, antitechnology outlook embodied in the miniscule Green Party. The consequences of a successful severing of the JUSOs [SPD youth groups] would be a degeneration of West German politics into a “left versus right” psychological warfare (Tavistock) game centered around the persons of Willy Brandt and Franz Josef Strauss — both agents of the Aspen Institute.
… One is led to the fully substantiated conclusion that the nominal “radical left” internationally is nothing more than a wholly owned psy-war project of British Intelligence — which indeed it is.

In the 1980’s the Green Party was a peace party — now they are warmongers. Perhaps this, an excerpt from a Council on Foreign Relations article (https://t.ly/AT-K9 7.2021), is relevant:

Green parties — once seen as radical outsiders — have increasingly claimed a place in mainstream politics, especially in Europe. Greens around the world have evolved from single-issue environmentalists into broad-based political parties capable of winning elections and serving at the highest levels of government.
… In the midst of this turbulence, greens are further scrambling the political calculus. Their outsider status means that they have been able to benefit from dissatisfaction with the current system while their idiosyncratic ideology attracts supporters from across the traditional left-right spectrum. Some analysts argue that they are uniquely positioned to win disaffected voters away from the far right — especially as, in the case of Germany’s greens, they have in many areas tacked to the center, supporting international institutions such as the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military alliance.

Hey, Hey, Hey what do you call the radical right? N A Z I S! The CIA has used the Nazis in Ukraine and the Baltic States since the end of WW2. They used the Nazis in 2014 to kick off violence during Maidan Coup. The Ukrainian military are full of Nazis that were trained and armed by the US and NATO.
Hey, Hey, Hey, you are full of it.

@Ed and anyone interested: the article (https://rb.gy/x04j6 1.1979) also shows the extent of academic corruption by British intelligence. So-called “professors” were in on the game as well:

With only the rarest of exception, the “radical left” internationally is organized as an interfaced nesting of political cults controlled through the Psychological Warfare Division of British Intelligence … Presently, the Tavistock capability is housed at the Universities of Sussex and Glasgow. While the anthropology and sociology departments of these universities turn out batches of what Tavistock founder Dr. John Rawlings Rees called “psychiatric shock troops” … the manufacturing of psychological warfare packages is significantly the assigned task of the Russian and East European studies departments, which were largely established immediately following World War II for the purpose of applying Tavistock methods for the fostering of Cold War confrontation, espionage profiles and antitechnology ideologies in both the East and West.

Something to keep in mind when we hear “experts” talking about Ukraine and other issues.

TEHRAN, Aug. 11 (MNA) – Syrian sources on Thursday night reported that several powerful blasts hit the illegal base of American forces in the south of Al-Hasakah province.
The Islamic State (IS) group has claimed responsibility for an attack that killed at least 33 Syrian soldiers and wounded several others in eastern Syria on Friday.
It took one day for the revenge attacks
It’s odd that people don’t care that we support “IS” they rape, murder and take slaves like the Spanish in the 1400’s

While doing research today, I came across what I consider to be a very important document if you’re curious about modern Russia, “Energy Strategy of Russia for the Period up to 2030”.
It makes it possible to read what was planned and compare to what actually happened, although that latter data needs to be supplied by the reader. There’s a complementary document, “Conception of Long-Term Socio-Economic Development of the Russian Federation up to 2020,” that’s rather voluminous, but I was unable to find in Russian or English in my brief online search. According to several sources, the “Concept” was never legislated into force and remained merely a guideline. What I can say is the info gleaned allowed me to confirm my hypothesis about Putin/Russian political-economy, that it’s based on the need to uplift Russia’s people and to formulate policies to accomplish that. The linked pdf document is over 170 pages, so it’s not a short read.

The context of “collapse-posting” is not clear from your post. That said, as I’ve pondered what you wrote, it occurs to me that, although it is certainly the logical take, it may overlook many relevant considerations:
1) Why is the empire making such a big deal out of a run-of-the-mill coup d’etat in one of the most volatile regions of Africa?
2) Why are there already over a thousand US troops already stationed in Niger?
3) What are the potential derivative consequences of this seemingly innocuous coup — especially in the context of the rapidly burgeoning support of its aims from not only the weaker states such as Burkina Faso and Mali, but much more significantly, from Algeria?
4) What if PMC Wagner joins the fray?
I submit there may be a very meaningful domino effect catalyzed if an intervention by the empire and its African vassals were to fail. It would instantly embolden many other African states to likewise seek to eradicate latent western imperial influence from their countries.
There are already rumblings in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic.
The geostrategic and macroeconomic importance of this region of Africa cannot be overstated. In conjunction with the HUGE loss to the west of Russian commodity production, the loss or severe degradation of imperial influence in these countries of Africa, and the concurrent expansion of Russian and Chinese influence into these same places … well, I guess what I’m trying to say is that I can well understand why the empire is so worked up over this.
There is MUCH more at stake than readily meets the eye.

ECOWAS unity is apparently crumbling. Ghana has now defected. The empire’s hopes to persuade another proxy to do their dirty work for them are not going to be realized. So now what?
The #EmpireAtAllCosts cult has been outmaneuvered yet again …

The situation in Urozhaynoye (DPR) on August 13.
The situation in the area of this village remains difficult, but everything is going completely differently from what the Armed Forces of Ukraine planned.
Who controls the village?
Reports that the village of Urozhaynoye has been abandoned by Russian troops have not been confirmed at the moment. Units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation control the central and southern parts of Urozhaynoye. At the same time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to gain a foothold in the northwestern part, where relatively intact buildings remain. At the moment, four houses on the outskirts of the village are under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
At the same time, over the past 20 days, during the assault on the positions of the RF Armed Forces, Ukrainian troops in this direction alone lost about 1 thousand people killed and wounded, which corresponds to about one third of the full-blooded brigade in the organizational and staff structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
How are the Armed Forces of Ukraine advancing on Urozhaynoye?
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are constantly changing tactics: first, they use large formations, and after losses, they use small groups of up to two platoons.
Urozhaynoye, Ukrainian troops are trying to encircle the village from two sides: in a straight line, from the T-05-18 highway, as well as from the northeast – through fields and forest plantations. Both the first and the second are accompanied by huge losses. At the same time, the positions of the RF Armed Forces are shelled with cluster munitions almost every time.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are rushing to Urozhaynoye due to the lack of sane results in other directions: in Zaporozhye, units of the Ukrainian army are dying in fire bags, in the Artyomovsk direction, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are gradually knocking out of Kleshcheevka, and in the Kupyansk direction, the offensive of the RF Armed Forces is developing altogether.
Why do the Armed Forces of Ukraine have such losses?
In the South Donetsk direction, the zone in which any maneuvers are available to the Armed Forces of Ukraine is only 7 km in a straight line, mainly around one asphalt road.
The density of Ukrainian troops near Velyka Novoselka is high, which facilitates the work of Russian artillery and aviation. The Armed Forces of Ukraine cannot decompress the orders and suffer heavy losses.
What’s special about Urozhaynoye?
The village itself, as well as other settlements, is part of the flexible defense system and, in fact, is a large advanced supporter. At the same time, Urozhaynoye is not part of the main line of defense, which the Armed Forces of Ukraine have not reached in two months of the offensive.
The decision to defend Urozhaynoye or conduct counterattacks there is made by the command of the RF Armed Forces based on the tactical situation.
What is happening in the area of the village is like two peas in a pod similar to the events near Pyatikhatki and on the Rabotino-Verbovoye line.
Earlier, the Military Chronicle has already said that in these areas the density of Ukrainian troops is also high, but the area for free maneuver is getting smaller, which is why losses in the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are constantly increasing. Every meter of movement in this area for the Armed Forces of Ukraine is accompanied by huge losses, while the main goal of the offensive – access to the Sea of Azov – has not been fulfilled even minimally.
The same thing happens in the area of Urozhaynoye.
