Please Support Moon of Alabama
Dear Readers,
twice a year I ask for your help to keep Moon of Alabama going.
Most of you who come here value my analyses. Others are fond of MoA's vivid, if at times overcrowded comment section. I am very proud to host and nurture it, to the best of my abilities. Here is what one of our frequent contributors says about it:
Posted by: bevin | Nov 24 2022 18:45 utc | 17This website is a tribute not just to the proprietor but to the idea of democracy. The general conclusions reached here over the past nine months (for example) have consistently outperformed the media, the Academy and the political castes which amount to an incredibly expensive and complex and enormously staffed engine designed -in theory at least- to arrive at a realistic assessment of the situation.
As for us here at MoA, where you are about ten times more likely to discover what's going on in the world than in any medium of the dominant class- than the New Yorker, The Guardian, BBC or even the favoured forums of the intelligentsia such as the Reviews of Books, The Economist or Foreign Affairs- here, as in a democracy, anyone can contribute. And just about anything which is not totally irrelevant or offensively obscene, is allowed. Every kind of eccentricity is permitted. The voices of communists are in constant struggle with those of fascists, liberals are welcome. Those who hate Russia are heard from. Those who hate Putin are listened to. Those who believe the SMO is a disaster have a forum. But so do those who believe that all is proceeding according to plan.
And there are no qualifications demanded of contributors. There is no literacy requirement, no Academic Degrees or resumes of experience, closeness to power or personal beauty are judged. All that matters is how close the poster comes to the truth, which, in the end, and usually sooner rather than later, is invariably revealed.
That is the way that democracy works - everyone gets to express opinions and they are judged by the minds they change. Or fail to change.
...
Here are more reasons why you should consider to drop me whatever you can afford.
I, of course, love feedback like the above. Unfortunately I can not just live on it. I also need to pay for food, rent and other necessities of life.
This site is the full time effort of one person. There is no other income I can rely on. While I live in somewhat better circumstances than Spitzweg's Poor Poet, I am neither rich nor do I indulge in luxuries.

bigger
Every donation to this Poor Poet - be it $5, $50, $500 or more - is welcome and needed. A recurring contribution or sponsorship would be great.
Transaction costs are the smallest when you make a bank wire transfer or mail cash. Send email to MoonofA @ aol.com (remove the blanks) for the necessary details. (They are the same as before.) You can use other means like credit cards when you donate through the PayPal button below. This even without having a PayPal account. (The Moon of Alabama account is in Euro which currently stands at €1 ~ US $1.10 and US $1 ~ €0.91).
Thank you very much!

Delighted to donate. One of the best analysts on the web and a fine swarm of commentators too, even though we now have to pick our way through brain-dead trolls: which is a perverse mark of success.

MOA is my essential daily reading
I made my first donation.

Happy to keep MOA going. It's lt's always at least hours and sometimes days and even weeks ahead of everyone else. The performance on Wagner Saturday was especially commendable. And the current photo album of Volodya at the NATO Summit is worth thousands of words. Onward!

thank you b. I'm keen to support the site with a donation, but paypal doesn't allow donations from accounts based in Japan. Are there any other options available?

I must have missed that one by Bevin. What a perfect summation of this bar and what it does! You've created a valuable forum for what is, as said, real hardcore democracy.
After this war on Russia began, the immense value of this place became undeniable.
If there were only some way to organize all the best flies into an international movement with some basic principles: 1) opposition to all attacks on democratic rights by the agencies of the ruling class 2) opposition to all imperialist war (wars of plunder or for geostrategic positioning seeking greater plunder) 3) for the unity of working people against the ruling elite of the imperialist nations.
Then we could start taking some action, the one thing everyone here desperately wants.
To a thousand more years of Moon of Alabama or until the people of the world finally oust finance capital, take power and control their destiny!
For you moon, I'll definitely cough up the cash.

I hasten to cancel a subscription to the nation's largest daily newspaper, which only portrays one side of conflicts, and I send the money to Moon of Alabama instead. Here I get to hear all opinions, how else could I form an opinion? Thanks, b, for your blog!

I am happy to contribute something monthly for the value this site provides. Thank you for your work.

MOA is my daily reading.
I just donated in spite I was banned several times when I posted something of concern related to Russian capabilities, mostly obtained from Dima. (Some see me as concern troll)
But I appreciate the distinguished intellectual level of the participants and the moderator.

Despite my having apparently been banned temporarily for no apparent reason I will contribute as the discussion this place carries is invaluable in a polluted informational environment. I enjoy reading b's articles and the analysis of many astute and informed barflies.
For the record, not actually a doctor, if that matters to anyone.

the money is spent so much better than for a printed newspaper subscription. And I check those regularly every now and then. It's good that this site exists and some (albeit few) comments are also adding value and insight. the not so few comments that don't add value or insight (such as my own, usually ;)) are unavoidable. Thanks for giving room to all those, too.

@30
I was just thinking the other day that I would proudly wear a MoA t-shirt. It wouldn't be difficult to set-up, B. Companies like Zazzle, society6, redbubble etc. would be worth looking in to. With many of these stores you just provide artwork and the companies handle the production and shipping.
Or here's another idea...how about collaborative merchandise through the Duran shop? They already have a store set-up...they may be interested in providing use of their platform?
Posted by: upsetter | Jul 12 2023 19:31 utc | 39
Like all the rest of the folk at the bar, I'll gladly pony up some money, B.
And if we're considering merch, what about those hazelnut cookies? They are awesome. For those of you that missed it, last Xmas B posted the family recipe for hazelnut cookies.
Keep on the lookout for it during the holidays late this year, maybe he'll re-post it.
And yes, I would like an MoA t-shirt, XLT. Or a bumper sticker. Or a hat. Budget: $25 - $50, plus shipping.
Moon Of Alabama
The Real Story of Power.
You heard it here first.

I am pleased to read new barflies recognizing your value b
Your value has been consistent for the decade plus I have been visiting your bar and you should be proud of the communication service you have and continue to provide to humanity.
We need to learn how to get along and communicate our differences intelligently. Along with the bully of global private finance, communication tools need to be refocused as a public utility like finance. The media we have now is good for creating consumers and political zombies but not for good citizenship. The MoA platform that b has provided and managed for all this time is a good model for future global discussion among logic/reason capable adults.
Yes to more money coming your way from me.

Hey b,
I'm in a bit of a tough spot right now watching pennies. Recent interest rate hikes have savaged all my discretionary spending, I'm down to one book a month (for which I have to endure a lecture on finances by my better half) :( That said, I agree with every point Bevin made and if it's ok to wait a while I'll sacrifice a book later in the year and pass on about 25 Euros. It's not much and not adequate compensation for all you do but when I win Powerball I'll make it up to you big time ;)

Hope to find a way to support you from Russia, you're an essential voice of reason even here.
Posted by: Max | Jul 12 2023 21:08 utc | 45
MoA is a place for dialogue like no other I know of - thus outperforming even RT. Fully worth and deserving of my contribution twice a year.
Posted by: grunzt | Jul 12 2023 21:14 utc | 46
Dauerauftrag it is. And a big thanks to B and many commentators for the excellent links and sources provided.
Posted by: gynt | Jul 12 2023 22:16 utc | 49
Yep. Good place. Pretty unique I think. The great thing, to my mind, is the comments, wild and woolly as they can get and for all the nasties interposing their ad hominems etc. b makes good posts, for sure, but the main value is what I glean from the voluminous comments. Alright: let's say equal value. :)
To my mind that's our greatest problem: we have no forums. We the people. It's beginning though, I think. And this venue is one of the first 'nodes'. We are collecting a web of such 'nodes', both sites and persons. The MSM is dead. An anachronism. To gather info and exchange info today we need to leapfrog around the web from 'node' to 'node' - the web of which will make up the de facto MSM of the future.
I am surprised that b doesn't list computer costs. Interesting. I find paying hosting a bit of an expense and once I require more space the host gets more demanding. 'Blackmailing' me by refusing to back up my sites unless I use less space or purchase more. Perhaps totally text based sites like this don't take up much room. Or he has a better provider than I. In which case please do tell.
On computer matters I would prefer a threaded format such a phpbb boards (which are free) or even the dpreview format which I like but know nothing about from whence it came. But I've learned to live with this, it's a damn sight better than nothing. And I am grateful for it.
On questions of cost Patroklos here: Posted by: Patroklos | Jul 12 2023 20:30 utc | 43
is severely constrained by sounds of it. I wonder if he's aware that if he'll settle for ebooks there are ways to get them very affordably? If we could communicate 'offboard' I'd be happy to tell. But that's another small point: this format doesn't allow for PM's that i know of.
Anyway. All good. I think there are some third party tools popping up for use with this site? I would like info on them if there are any links?
Posted by: arthur brogard | Jul 12 2023 23:07 utc | 50
Dear B,

You should be proud that your readership and commentariat span the entire planet. Congratulations!

I know this comment is really off-topic but the last Open Thread (for news not related to Russia's SMO in Ukraine) was a week ago and had over 100 comments already.
I was disturbed to hear that there was a military parade in Adelaide (South Australia) on Saturday (July 8) which had apparently not been announced in the national or state media, to my knowledge. A video of the parade went viral and people who saw it were upset at the presence of Army chaplains in the parade and at the menacing nature of the parade itself.
Why were tanks and soldiers paraded through the streets of Adelaide, Australia?
The reason for the display - to mark the transfer of the Australian Army's 1st Armoured Regiment from Darwin to Adelaide, and the regiment's standards from a church in Darwin to St Peter's Cathedral in Adelaide - would not only have appeared mediaeval as the World Socialist Web Site puts it, it also has a whiff of Franco-era Spain and the military juntas that ruled Argentina and Chile in the late 1970s / early 1980s.

I wonder if the USG somehow is tracking the financial donations to websites which do not follow the "party line". If they do, they are possibly gaining some information about the general mood of the populace. If they do, they should learn and try to adjust in positive or (more likely) negative way.

In other words, it is so important and interesting that I cannot stop myself spending time here.

Yes please accept donations via crypto. Why?
1) Fascist Paypal is unacceptable - see $2500 'misinformation' fine scandal. Using Paypal identifies me as donor. Also Paypal sells my transaction information to all and sundry.
2) Bank, cards: similar to Paypal - disclosing my identity plus having the transaction shared out. Threat of Canadian trucker donor treatment, now or anytime in the future.
3) Cash: yes!, though based on recent experience I personally worry my envelope would disappear along the long way to you. Also postal services increasingly use trackable QR code stamps, removing the protection of making an anonymous donation.
b you've probably heard how Paypal closes down critical outlets routinely. Advisable to sweep incoming donation frequently to limit the loss of that were to happen.

As there are not many other barflies reporting similar calamities - ever considered your device and/or your browser fools you?

I have followed your site for a good number of years now (don't remember how long exactly), and I have always appreciated it very much. This is why I have donated from time to time to support you. But I wonder if you have a blog or another website where you reveal a little bit about yourself, your own background. It would be nice to get to know a little more about
you and what led you to Moon of Alabama.
#84 long ago I posted occasionally, but then I'd write out and try to post. I'd hit post and see it, then when I'd refresh it would be gone. Over and over. But not now. Anyway, it's ok as this place, despite the way out there echo chamber eccentricity is invaluable and basically wonderful. I've pretty much lived here for years now. First thing in the morning, last thing at night and constantly in-between.quite the addiction. Best comments section ever known to man. God bless Russia.

"I wonder if he's aware...?" Thanks for the patronising note (but no I haven't been living under a rock for 50 years). I have 240,000 pdfs and ebooks drawn from about 15 sites, legit and less so, that I have been collecting for 12 years, about 1 TB's worth. But nothing, nothing at all, will ever substitute for a proper BOOK. Whenever one puts 'e' before something one commits a kind of murder. But lovely of you to assume I'm an idiot.
