Are there other scientific domains, such as biology, in which it’s so popular to disclaim basic knowledge?

If a man cuts his penis off, he is a woman. If a man thinks he is a woman, he is a woman.
That’s the new science, brought to you by the same people as global warming. (Its not climate change, its not climate science) you allade your predictions under the auspice of global warming, and that is the moniker i will cintinue to peg to you, so you cant change your name and try to rewrite what your dire past predictions were.
Oh, and let’s not forget the biological facts that the covid vaccines ate “safe and effective”, brought to you by Pfizer!
Thigh-enth!
Imagine, 30 yeats ago,”in 30 yeats, the world will be much different than now!”

In all likelihood, we are in for a painful collapse. We probably have about ten years and a billion dead before we see a serious response. Then we find out if it is too late…
Posted by: je | Jul 28 2023 2:25 utc | 96
In ten years, you and all your cohorts in the global warming camp will be denying such ludicrous predictions were made all the time by your ilk.
And when they are, be it Al Gore, Greta Thunberg, or you, none of your cohorts ever step forward and say, “whoa cowboy, thats a little extreme”
Nope, they just nod their heads, knowing in ten years nobody will remember.
Well, I remember. You all have been saying shit like this for thirty years now. And you all have been WRONG.

bullshit. that’s not popular basic knowledge, and you can’t back up that the people who have been developing physics for the last couple of hundred years are the trans people, that is just some stupid story you have gone all in on. you might as well be shilling for Pfizer as shilling for Exxon. both shameful. name one prediction that the climatologists got wrong in overestimating climate change.. you keep prattling on about wrong predictions, name one. not a newspaper, not a manazine cover in 1970’s, not a newspaper interview. i want specifics. you’re going to come up with the same trash the shills have been peddling for 30 years, because that is in effect what you are, a shill. Thirty years ago, twenty years ago, ten years ago, today… …do you EVER, have you EVER, said ANYWHERE, that the hyped up predictions were trash, before they were proven to be?
Now you try to relegate them to sensationalist press… …but back then, you were a true believer in the doom.

I read them. I read one about a cascade effect from co2 being released as the oceans heated. This was twenty years ago. Didnt happen.
But please, continue to insist there were no dire predictions by the “settled science”, while refusing to dosavow all the doomists of the past, and today.
Hey pretzel, you know the science so well. In ten years, how much worse will it be? In twenty years? How much tome does the earth have left?
Think carefully before you answer, and back it up with your own peer reviewed paper.
If you cant probe a prediction of doom…
Then who the fuck cares? If there is no doom in the future, why is it called “climate crisis” now?
The whole movement and fanaticism is based on prognostications of doom. Without those prognostications, nobody would care.

How about the projections made by the republican James Hansen in 1988?
@ pretzelattack | Jul 28 2023 19:31 utc | 205
Because so many basic indices (e.g. Antarctic sea-ice, north Atlantic sea-temp) are more than 4 standard deviations from the mean, I get the impression this year of a phase-shift in the global climate system as a whole. Like the moment of silence just before the teakettle starts screaming. So I went back to Hansen’s 2009 Storms of My Grandchildren to see how much his predictions in there align with current conditions.
He speaks of three “ratchets” (implying a shift to a hotter baseline) ahead for us:
(1) When great ice-sheets are softened so much that their discharge wildly disrupts Earth’s major oceanic currents, driving hela crazy weather patterns. Maybe this gist of what we see starting in 2023, here.
(2) When the ice-sheets discharge enough to drive abrupt sea-level rise.
(3) When deeper ocean temperatures rise enough to release methane hydrates. Because that stock of marine clathrates has built up for such a long time (since the PETM of 55 mya), it represents enough of a carbon pulse to put Earth “on the Venus Express,” according to Hansen. By which he means: toward the end of all Life on Earth. That’s what’s at stake, here.
They did not listen, they’re not listening still. Perhaps they never will.

More predictions of imminent doom.
That when they dont occur, will be waved off as “sensationalist journalism”, and not the “real science”
Pretzel, you want to discount this sensationalist doomsaying as unscientific, un-peer reviewed book selling fodder?
Or do you want to nod your head in agreement, and if it doesnt come true in ten years, (it wont) dismiss it as sensationalist press, not real science, and claim that over the past forty years no prefictions of doom were made by the “real scientists”
See, you wont denounce Aleph. Even if there were no scientific papers of doom, (I read a few back in the day), you still believe in the doom. It is what drives you and gives you your righteous indignation. You are trying to save the world afterall.
Since you tell me with a straight face there were never any scientific predictions of doom, I am sure you would say with a straight face you never in your life believed doom would be here in a few years.
But in both cases, anyone could easily tell your are lying. So that hurts your cause, not mine.

Day Two of the Russia-Africa Summit has concluded with a great amount of work accomplished. Between all the readouts, declarations and other sets of documents agreed to an entire day would be required to read them all. And no, my substack article doesn’t have all of it, but it’s still quite long, longer than yesterday’s. I certain Putin and all of Russia are very pleased with the outcome. The people who’ll loathe that it occurred at all render themselves small–tiny–minded that they do so.

How have I seen climate change in my community? Really
OK
1980 Colorado. Pine bark bore beetle Whips out full forests in Colorado where I grew up, Pinebark Beetle was always their but was killed off in the winter. That is no longer the case Last glacier disappears in Colo.
Washington state. Slow loss of Salmon in every river in Both Washington and Oregon because the rivers are not staying cold enough.
Summers in Washington were lovely 20 years ago, we are now in both Oregon and Washington Having longer hotter summers. 4 friends in different places have lost their homes Oregon, Cal, Australia. Spent several days while visiting family in Colorado helping to evac people. So dry a massive fire started by a bullet! That fall I spent time delivering food to people evacuated from a massive fire 10 miles from me.
I am a climber (or was) the glaciers on several peaks have disappeared or have shrunk so much climbing the routes are not possible. Ice climbing has become very dangerous. This is World wide
Alaska BC,OR WA have shut down both fishing and crabbing more and more to save what is left.
Massive fires within ten miles of where I live every summer now. This summer alone 3 fires with in a mile 1 of us. In all the years in Colo when I was a kid never heard or saw a fire. When I moved to OR there would be fires started by Lightening in Sept. Maybe. Washington it picked up and now back in Oregon it is fire season from May to Nov. Climate swings do not happen in 50 to 100 year swings they happen to 10,0000 or more .

Oops, i lived in WA for over 40 years. Still here. I remember plenty of hot summers in the past. I have always been an outdoors type.
And this summer has been cooler than normal, by quite a bit.
And I am going hiking soon, too.
I remember some killer heat hikes around this time, but looking awfully cool and perfect this week.
I also take note of smoke and snow, as I go for the view, and smoke kills that, and I dont like snow. I remember snowy years, and smoky times. Plenty of them the past 20 years.
And this winter had two 6″ + snowstorms, where
I remember clearly snow days hardly even happened when I was in school, and snow was pretty rare 30 years ago. I remember plenty of years with at best 3″ of snow.

There are no scientific, peer-reviewed papers on global warming doom. So the science says no doom in the future.
Why deny the science?
Pretzel says all the doom is just press and politics, and there actually is no scientific consensus on doom in the next decade!
So why worry yourself. Global Warming science has no peer reviewed white papers predicting doom, so why do you?

https://consortiumnews.com/2023/07/28/caitlin-johnstone-the-star-spangled-kangaroo/

So I think the star-spangled kangaroo is an entirely appropriate symbol for the country. Put it on the flag. Put it on the money. Put it on all the warships and planes, and on every military uniform.
When you walk into an Australian government building, Yankarooey (or whatever stupid Aussie nickname that gets made up to mask the cognitive dissonance) should be the first thing everyone sees.
Undignified? Certainly. Humiliating? Absolutely. An admission that Australia is not a real nation? Of course.
But at least it would be honest. If Australia is going to act as Washington’s subservient basement gimp, it may as well dress the part.

Climate change does not have any rules except that the climate keeps warming. Doesn’t mean we will not have big snow years but when you go hiking tell me what’s left from our crazy winter, cause our rivers are already low. Fire season has changed massively whether or not you choose to believe it. Take a little look see at your neighbors to the north. I am not going to bother having this conversation with you because it is pointless.

Plus, you keep using and capitalizing PEER REVIEWED for emphasis. to paraphrase a famous quote, I do not think it means what you think it means.

Thanks for that personal firsthand observation…
Funny you should mention the pine bark beatle thats a perfect indicator species. As a tree man for the last 60 years i can confirm that.
The pine bark beatle can not survive on healthy pines as when it bores into the bark to lay eggs in a ‘breeding gallery’the pine resin floods the gallery as a nataral protection.
But now if your pine forest is under stess by heat or polution the tree is weakened and the beatle will be able to breed large scale increasing over several years to the extent you have seen.
Dead pine forests thats a big red warning light right there.

Has lest to do about climate change and more about pollution in the waterways. Worked for Teck in south eastern British Columbia and I could spend an hour telling you what, where, and why certain chemical poisons were dump in the Michel creek, down into the Harmer valley and into the Elk river.
In simple terms. During dry spells these chemicals get concentrated into the beds of waterways and washed out when the rains hit, impacting the Marine life. Search.. Tecks pollution record British Columbia. Tons of info.

Stated the pine beetle up here in Canada had “mutated” into a stronger species. Could it be some kind of Biological weapon??
15 years ago Southwest Alberta they went nuts, cutting pine, to beat the beetle. The dead pine is poorer quality (Lest $$$) for lumber/pulp.
In west central Alberta did it’s damage up to about 4 years ago and now very quiet. Still have large stands of Lodgepole pine that survived east of here. Why the change??

Fifteen or so years ago, we took a drive into Washington and traversed the North Cascades National Park. We stopped at a scenic overlook to have a picnic and take photos. What was astounding was the massive numbers of dead and dying trees which I’d read about that’re related to Susan’s descriptions. Another oddity is happening in the ocean in my backyard–Pacific Halibut are becoming rare. The predictions that were made about the probable changes in Pacific Northwest climate I researched during 2002-3 when it became clear we were going to move North from San Jose upon retirement have mostly been correct. That everything was going to go to hell in a handbasket lickity-split-quick was always incorrect; change would be gradual but most importantly irreversible over the course of human lifespans. From a physics POV, the climate system was already primed for change from the carbon added to it between 1800-1900, but the additional boost given between 1900 and 1945 sealed the deal as Big Oil knew in the 1950s. Physics says the temperature gradient between the poles and equator will continue to flatten–equalize–which will cause atmospheric dynamics to change. And those dynamics are what drives weather. Physics is a hard nuts & bolts science that’s all based on math making it perhaps the most objective science. As most here know, I’m a guy who demands objectivity. That’s my oar in this stream.

Which is why climate scientists like to attach themselves to physics. Because climate and meteorology are not hard sciences. They work in randomness and chances, as opposed to concrete numerical models. Their predictions can only be judged by how close their predicted chances come through:. A physicist can tell you exactly how far 38 kg will go when pushed with 52 newtons, but a meteorologist can give a percent chance based on mostly past behavior and patterns.
And there are many realms of physics that arent so concrete,. Like astrophysics which have lots of forces whose cause is unknown, and new discoveries all the time.

If you catch a Pine bark beatle infection early enough. What you do is cut a lot of the weak but still alive trees down in spring leaving the trunks in on the ground the Beatles are atracted to these (less resim) see my above then when they lay all there eggs under the bark you remove the tree trunks and beatle eggs chemically (butlin) or by peeling. I have a meteorology textbook in my library and it’s a physics-based science. It’s a discipline that’s subsumed within the wide umbrella of physical geography.

China tells the Outlaw US Empire to STFU over its aid to Cambodia related to the China-assisted renovation project at the Ream Naval Base. This analogy is great:

Imagine this analogy: A family plans to build a house on their own residential land. They invite their skilled and friendly neighbors, who are good at construction, to help them with the project. Suddenly, an outsider arrives and insists that they cannot build the house and should not seek help from their neighbors. Of course, the family would not listen to the outsider’s demands. However, as the house is nearing completion, the outsider comes back and questions, “Why are you installing a trap at your doorstep?” Now, does the family need to explain their personal matters to an outsider?
The US has been trying to conduct searches at the Ream Naval Base, but Cambodia has rejected their request. Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed his anger, saying, “Ream Naval Base is not a place for thieves or robbers. I allowed you to visit, not to investigate or inspect.” Moreover, the US does not have a search warrant, so in essence, they are bullying Cambodia. According to the Cambodian constitution, the country shall not permit any foreign military base on its territory, and this is entirely Cambodia’s own affair.

That’s precisely the sort of shove-back that’s required every time the Empire tries to bully.

I am not a scientist by any means, are you UW? Still, you don’t have to be a scientist to see that the climate is in fact changing, and not for the better for most animal life forms, including human beings. I have cracked a few books about climate change written for dummies such as I am.
I think that science is there if you look at it closely, but if you demand mathematical precision, you will probably never accept it or even look at it, but that changes nothing. Like it or not, human greed and incompetence will not destroy the planet, it will just destroy our ability to live on it for some long period of time to come. It turns out that we are cancerous to the planet, and we are too stupid to understand that and / or too greedy to change what we are doing. That doesn’t matter because the climate will change whether we like it or not, even if you don’t like math.

Another practice which goes on to this day in my neck of the woods. A cut block has been “harvested” then 20-75 15 foot high brush piles are burned, later the area is “mulched” and planted with Lodgepole or Jack pine seedlings (The $$$ tree). For those seedlings to strive there is a constant defoliant spraying system (helicopters) going on to kill the growth of any aspen, willows poplar etc. It’s a farming practice.
This practice upsets the whole ecosystem of the area. Plays a big part of why a pine beetle explosion. (Not temperature related.)
I can take you to blocks planted 20 years ago. Looks sickly pale green. Yet go down the road 10km to the Gregg River burn (Natural) the pine there vibrant rich dark green. Our forests are stressed due to forest management practices.

As someone with a B.Sc in Physics, I can confirm that climate science is awash with physics. All the BASIC processes that warm or cool our planet are known and basically agreed upon. Meteorology is an applied science based on the tenets of physics, but of course is working with very complex and fluctuating environments.
Climatology is even murkier in that it is trying to model changes in a complex environment over much longer timescales that meteorology, and looking for even smaller signals – differences of 0.1 C or less over decades. But it is all very much based (or supposed to be based) on physics.

So if glaciers millions of years old start disapearing. Permafrost starts melting that has been stable for millennium is that not enough to ring alarm bells as a physicist? Even a skeptical one ?
Let me throw another indicator into the overwhelming pile so far.

What has just happened to the great barrier reef ?
@ Mark2 | Jul 28 2023 23:15 utc | 245
We’re seeing a marine heatwave, along with a terrestrial heatwave, of essentially global proportions. The southern ocean is cooking enough to flag the final resignation of Antarctic sea-ice. The great barrier reef’s demise is obviously only a matter of time, along with coral reefs around Florida, where they recently measured a record-hot ocean temperature of 101°F. Once those reefs are gone, they’re gone for good.
Regarding Hansen’s ratchet number one, mentioned above: disruption of major ocean currents…

In recent years, researchers have suggested that because of climate change, the AMOC current system could be slowing down and may eventually collapse. A paper published yesterday in the journal Nature Communications warns that the collapse of the AMOC isn’t just possible, but imminent.

https://www.wired.com/story/why-scientists-are-clashing-over-the-atlantics-critical-currents/
That’s the Atlantic Meridional Ocean Current. As with the loss of coral reefs, we cannot have any idea what might come next, when the AMOC is dearly departed.

With Africa swinging away from American domination and the same in the middle east that’s a big voting group within the UN. Will it be enough to end American dominance?
The Outlaw US Empire hasn’t been dominant within the UNGA for several decades as revealed by key votes over that timespan. The problem’s at the UNSC where it has the veto and thus is able to escape discipline. Prior to 911, the Empire paid some attention to global opinion and thus took more care in its doings. With the adoption of the Wolfowitz Doctrine and its aim to attain Full Spectrum Domination in 1996, that began to change as seen with Clinton’s crime of bombing Sudan and attacking Serbia. Full Spectrum Domination was reiterated in 1999 and 911 swiftly followed. Utter contempt for global opinion and international law followed as exemplified by Powell’s Lies at the UNSC, ignoring the global protests against attacking Iraq, the further lies made to provide justification for waging Aggressive War–the #1 War Crime–along with several other examples and of course W’s “With us or against us” challenge to the world. The “Arab Spring” and the Rape of Libya followed with Obama/Biden and their attempt to destroy Syria on behalf of Occupied Palestine. But the goals set by the Bush neocons weren’t attained. The pushback began with Russia challenging Obama over Syria’s supposed chemical weapons which was followed by Russia’s direct intervention on Syria’s behalf in 2015. How much that was in response to the 2014 Ukraine coup remains unknown. All during that time, Russian diplomacy was slowly winning over old and new friends in Africa and elsewhere. The fact that the West would never deliver on its promises of development aid to Global South nations and its opposite policies aimed at making them more dependent alienated those nations and pushed them into the open arms of China and Russia who had longstanding opposite policies.
The consensus is dominance is on the wane. We see that in the rejection of the RoW to obey the illegal sanctions diktat. The clear moral abasement and hypocrisy related to the “Grain Deal” further degraded the West. From the remarks made at the Summit, Africa sees the West still addicted to its colonialism and desire for plunder. The desire for development is extremely strong. The disparities between nations in Africa in some cases are monstrous. And of course, as we saw with Niger, the poisonous vestiges of colonialism remain a key factor. What that’s done is to close the door to any further Western sponsored development and movement away from IMF and World Bank controls that will further reduce dominance. The flipside will be a great rise in efforts to attain 2030 Developemnt Goals. As transport projects get completed that enhance connectivity and aide resource development, Africa as a whole will experience a snowball effect in its geopolitical power that will also enable ASEAN, West and South Asia, and Eurasian development.
The RoW Bloc’s synergy will gradually pull away nations from the EU portion of the Dollar Bloc, which will further weaken the latter. As the Outlaw US Empire has to pay for its empire of bases, the number of those bases will quickly be reduced. As dollar hegemony wanes so will its related power. At the UN, the key problem is the UNSC Veto; how that will/can be resolved is unknown as the US won’t give it up. It might be alienated to leave the UN as the RoW slowly regains control over its institutions, which is something the RoW is in agreement upon effecting. Events are at a rate currently that’s quickly driving change–globally and domestically within Neoliberal nations. It’s nine years off, but I see 2032 as a potential watershed year. China already has a genuinely bigger and better economy that the Outlaw US Empire and the gap between the two will only widen further. And there’s no way the Empire can win a war against China, or pretty much any other nation today.

The whole movement and fanaticism is based on prognostications of doom. Without those prognostications, nobody would care.

Missing the forest for the trees. Regardless of whether or not we are all actually going to cook alive in an open-air oven that was once the Earth (we aren’t), I think it’s pretty clear that there is a problem.
Animal species are dying off at wild rates. The declining populations of insects should be enough alone to scare anyone. Whether you want to call it a “climate crisis” or a “conservation/pollution issue” or anything of the sort, things are moving steadily and continually toward the negative in terms of the natural environment. Acknowledging that something is wrong does not necessarily carry any sort of inherent political proscription or position.
No matter what kind of evil program the elites desire or offer to solve the issue within the context of maintaining their rule, it will certainly mean more misery and oppression for the least amongst us. No matter which way you go, you are going to run up against the enormous bulwark known as the Market. The answer to addressing climate change doesn’t come from outright rejection of the phenomenon because the ruling class will consider just about anything other than limitations on profit margin; it comes from first admitting that any direction we walk is one backwards unless we reckon with the ruthless exploitation and abuse of the Earth that unfolds from the Market–the real Great Satan.

The day the first base is abandoned is the beginning of the end.
@climate: methods may well be based in physics, as you say, but that doesn’t change the simple fact that there are way too many important variables which they cannot confidently model. They haven’t even really figured out the lower layers of atmosphere the interaction of water vapor and CO2. They have ideas, notions, but not complete understanding. Then you have to add in major inputs like ocean currents, sun magnetic wind strength, positions relative to the other planets, position relative to Milky Way, stage of the Milky Way 465000 year full return cycle and its magnetic wind/particulate presence, bacterial population cycle in key zones like rain forests etc. since they effect precipitation timing and amount (by rising into atmosphere at certain points not yet understood) and hundreds more.
So it’s not about whether it’s based in physics but whether or not we have the ability to measure it accurately, completely and in a dynamic fashion for it is a dynamic ever-changing matrix of events. Indeed, it is way too dynamic and multi-variable to be a valid object of the scientific method which does much better with measuring regular movement or ideally static phenomena.
Not to mention that many peer-reviewed papers are fraudulent bunkum as has been studied in many fields, climate science being one. So IMO there is no definitive voice, agency, theory or study on this complex ever-changing topic.
But to each his own. I think it’s generally best that people don’t insult each other for having differing opinions then the issue could be more enjoyably discussed. But such is not our time…

I appreciate your impression of climate-science’s grounding in physics. “Soft sciences” are fluffy nothings like sociology and economics, where there’s no possible means of objectively testing hypotheses. Climate science is very hard, indeed.
For anyone genuinely curious, in case y’all don’t know, a whole lot of current scientific literature has been available via Google Scholar (scholar.google.com). There are ghastly paywalls, where you only get to see the abstract, and other places where the whole paper is available for download (commonly as PDF).
So it’s not hard to keep up with the science, even for folks without scepticalSOB’s formal training. Sometimes I crash through some differential equations I’m not grasping at the moment, but I think I can get the gist of relevant papers, despite my lack of expertise.

If you’re already keen to this then apologize for secondhand info, but the US has long invested heavily in aircraft carriers as a means of achieving dual naval-aerial dominance in war. China, on the other hand, has commissioned more of frigates, corvettes, and subs.
Military simulations show the Empire as losing its carriers in hours. And then naval dominance becomes a far different game.

The planet os getting poisoned, and global warming takes the urbanocentric view it vehicles and burning of petroleum. They live among cars, they commute to and from work, oft in traffic jams, and stew: “Too mamy people in the world”. The commute is usually one of the worst parts of a job.
Cosmopolitan living is wasteful, and found to a far greater degree in the cities. These very people are working these high paying, long commute jobs, to buy all sorts of manufactured and imported goods… ..not to mention driving 20 miles to favorite restaurants, etc.
It reminds me of someone I know, goes on benders, gets the shots, then blames the msg in something he ate, or hfcs, or the water he drank. He doesnt want to admit it was the bender.
So too, do these city people consume all manners of toxic products. Both literally, such as preservatives and pesticides, ssris and hormone drugs… …they also consume massive amounts of poison figuratively.
The materials in furniture are toxic, and billions of tons of it end up in landfills every year. Cars last 15 years at worst, but most new ones are only owned a few years before being sold or traded. The pcbs from runways will cause our water to be cancerous for 200 more years.
All those preservatives, weed killers, drugs, air fresheners, shampoos…
..the toxicity never ends.
And yet, “the settled science” tells us cow farts are a danger.

I forgot one; chemotherapy. But try telling the medical industry how poisonous it is to urban watersupplies and slow moving water bodies.
Of course doing so, would make you pro-cancer, wouldn’t it. Plus the ppb are so small, harmless really…
…not, when combined with all the other toxins that get into the water and air and eco systems. They all become a soup of toxicity. 1000 ppbs and you are up to ppms. And ppms is where it gets toxic.

DU, you jest while you prove our point. You are right about one thing: “…the science is never declared “settled “on these toxic products.” Could that be because corporate scientist and market considerations hold more sway with our political and legal system (including oversite agencies such as the food and drug agencies and the EPA) than the health and safety of the common citizen? Have you ever heard the term: Profits Over People? It is the essence of the Military Industrial Complex, a system supported by over 90% of the US Congress.

Thank you Karlof1.
I read the transcript of the Russia – Africa summit that you provided. Intense reading and very much an eye opener.
African nations are looking forward to working with Russia in the future and in the present. They appreciate Russian grain (Putin decisively won the grain deal battle), and are looking forward to, almost demanding, Russian support in developing their community and business infrastructures. They note that when Western corporations sell products made with raw materials from Africa, the West gets over 90% of the money. Africa wants that set of business processes changed.
Multiple African leaders thanked Russia for helping to free Africa from Western imperialism, and thanked the Soviet Union for help it gave in the past. I was not expecting that. Africa is freeing itself from Western imperialism, and is looking to Russia to help them convert political freedom into better living conditions for its citizens.
There is lots more. One final note: as moderator of the forum, Putin was a very good listener.

And of course, we need to think about how [to create a mechanism for strategic partnership]. This is a difficult task, especially across industries and countries, but if we want to achieve concrete results, we need to think about it right now. I agree with you.

This is from Putin in response to a request for global and regional development planning done by sovereign nations instead of the empire “stink tanks” and blood sucking tools of finance. This is what you would get out of the UN if it were not a tool of empire because of its structure which is being challenged, if not the whole UN be replaced by a better RoW body.
The caravan of the RoW is getting its act together and is moving on while the dogs of empire keep barking and howling loudly

There have been a number of studies published on CO2 lifecycle footprint of BEVs – they all generally agree that BEVs are CO2 neutral versus ICEs after 150,000 miles on the odometer.
Gee – who wudda think that using a 6,000 pound BEV machine to get a quart of milk was less environmentally damaging than a 4,000 pound ICE machine ?

Or turn off your computer, save that electrical waste…disconnect from the network of human communication – cease posting adversarial and provocative challenges to STFU.
Or at least save energy by making collaborative communications, win-win instead of zero-sum, either-or provocations.
~~
The great pity is in how many fell into the provocation, and turned this entire thread into a juvenile bitch-slap festival.
One wonders how much energy was wasted for so little result. One wonders how we couldn’t manage to make the old-style MOA comments, which built on each other by adding fact and nuance and viewpoint, and managed a consensus of sorts, after 60 comments.
Once, people didn’t make 10-20 comments in a thread. They said their piece and read some more, and maybe added another piece. And it was all part of the parsing and the building.
And that was all it was. All it ever needs to be.
~~
Were we gamed? Was it trolls and shills? Or has the level of reason fallen so low that discourse is now the running dog of a bitch slap?
I suspect that many of the old commenters here could tell me. But why would they even try to post here? Do they even read anymore?
~~
We shall strive to save what can be saved. We shall not try to save that which seems lost: that which will not even strive to save itself. As applied to the declining world, so applied to the declining comments threads – they are the same thing, the same training, the same testing ground.
If we must, we move on and find better training grounds, better comment threads, more useful comments. We give up the addiction or habituation to the old and seek the better.
What a sad thread this has been, juvenile and fatuous, with the multiple truths hanging just above its head like night lanterns, and almost no one turning to look at them, intent on the cocktail party down below, the jousting and the slapping, the wash of ego, the rush of straw men, the waste of the gift of reason and contributive words.
~~
We could have talked about the warming of the planet and the forces seeking to obscure this; the lack of any need to panic and the forces seeking to instill panic; the data points that do seem verified and verifiable (with links); the environmental degradation and the role this plays in the knock-on effect of climate, or at the minimum how it strips our natural protections in the wake of climate surges; the possibility that environmental degradation is the greater cause of harm to humans, and all life, than the climate changes of the planet.
All of this was actually presented in this thread, but at 273 comments as I write, the energy cost to energy result (EROI) in order to discover these things was detrimental to further investment.
It was a good thread turned to shit – again – by juvenile attack-and-response between individuals.
This is the worst form of pollution for a comments thread.
And you who did it caused it.

Below is a quote from a Xinhuanet piece

The spillover effects of the Fed’s aggressive rate hikes go far beyond.
Due to the dominant role of the U.S. dollar in the global financial system, rate hikes have lifted U.S. bond yields and strengthened the U.S. dollar, prompting large-scale capital flow from emerging markets to the United States, and sending shockwaves through the financial markets of many countries.
These countries are then forced to hike interest rates faster and higher, posing risks to their own economic development.
As the value of other currencies tumbles, it will be more expensive for these countries to import food and fuel, which allows the United States to essentially export inflation, adding pressure on these central banks.
In addition, Lachman noted that higher interest rates push up debt servicing costs for emerging markets, intensifying debt risks for highly indebted emerging market economies.

This is why I hope that the BRICS+ new finance system moves forward to provide a more stable development environment. The debt crisis is coming and will be part of the adjustments made after the economic crash of 2023…..coming soon to a reality near you

And when one honestly counts it all up – their household burns between 2,000 and 3,000 gallons of gasoline a year. And usually >25,000 kWh of electricity a year. It’s obscene.

Grieved | Jul 29 2023 5:42 utc | 274 makes a series of important points about the condition of our planet – something totally outside the purview let alone control of barflies and the condition of ‘off-topic’ threads in MoA currently – something entirely within the purview and control of all of us. Once again an OT thread has been destroyed by selfish arseholes who are intent on ego-driven ‘point scoring’ and adolescent put downs of others who do not share their views. I haven’t yet shot through, when I do it will be because I have found a forum free of this nonsense as MoA was for decades.
None of us care too much about what some blow-in’s opinion on anything is. That is not outta elitism, intellectual snobbery or the like; it is just a simple reality, if none of us know you at least on the basis of posts you have made expressing your opinions backed up with evidence, why on earth would we have an interest in yer prattlings.
As long as idjits & propagandists keep turning up here spouting their ‘truth’ whilst never including verifiable evidence of what they say the lack of interest will continue.
As far as climate science goes most of us have developed a position on it based on decades of study and contacts with people who are qualified to state their thesis and it is ludicrous for anyone to just turn up here making assorted unsupportable claims whilst providing no checkable data other than that of other opinions also unsupported by data.
I came into this thread today to discuss something other than climate & I’m disappointed that this pointless tosh has been spewed across the rug yet again.
In one thread this week someone appealed to the ‘sysadmin’ of MoA to clean up some mess the poster had made themself. The sheer gall of it amazed me. This place isn’t some public facility reeking of disinfectant and stale urine. This is a place where many people have chosen to gather and support over the decades, run by one human, b. who is continually being entreated to ‘just do blah blah’ by an increasing number self-indulgent dingbats who cannot imagine anywhere that isn’t kept up to snuff by mom or ‘the better half’ or whoever.
This is place where we’re all expected to look after our own mess, where paying a few bucks a month doesn’t entitle you to anything more than knowing that b. and his cat ate today, yet I still see people raised on the entirely false premise that everything has a price insisting that b. cover some topic merely because it is of interest to the requester.
I’m gonna stop now as I said I came in here to raise a different issue and I hate it when I’m driven to act the curmudgeon an old bloke who wants to wind the clock back to some non-existent before, if only cos it puts me in a foul mood in RL.

Thats classic pot calling the kettle black. This is an open thread, climate chainge is important to say the least.
What actauly did that comment of yours contribute to that subject or any other.
Your comment reads/tells clearly of your own high minded vanity and ego. Get over yourselve, its not all about you.
Put up or shut up. Both sides of this debate contributed hugly here so dont just breeze in and stomp all over that.
Oh and get over your grudge its not a good look.

Again i cant help but agree with you.
Climate zealots they are a very real and tangable fact, they do the couse no end of harm.an embarrassment. They use climate chainge as a vehicle for their own virtue signaling.
Their fake.
Recharging the brand new expensive electric car. With out a thought of where the electric comes from, who built it, how long it will last.ect ect ect.
They dont ask what massive capalist company and share holders profit from it.
Its its just….ghastly. how did the buitiful world get to this state of ignorance?
It will for sure be ignorance that kills this planet.

I came in here tonight to see if anyone had really dug into the congressional hearings on ufo’s or whatever they’re calling them this week.
I’ve taking a bit of a look at the hearing. Statements from allegedly credible witnesses mostly former air force & airforce intelligence officers. Found a link to a vid of what seems to be the full session. Unfortunately is is on youtube if anyone has a better alternative link ie non yt I suggest they whack it up here. In the meantime the yt/google link is here.

What was really off-putting was the first half hour or so of politicians slapping themselves on the back. And their ignorance of the world much less the subject.
