Just listened to this. I never picked it up before, but now I’m pretty certain Shaeffer knows nothing. The man is clueless pretending to have a clue. Posted by: ostro | Jun 27 2023 9:00 utc | 201 Here’s a gruesome reality check for how “well” the Ukrainian offensive is going: Hopeless Ukrainian Rescue/Recover Mission in a Russian Minefield. Posted by: Scotch Bingeington | Jun 27 2023 9:05 utc | 202 Preparations are underway for the transfer of heavy military equipment of the Wagner PMCs to the active units of the Armed Forces. – the Russian Defense Ministry Posted by: ostro | Jun 27 2023 9:07 utc | 203 FT: Posted by: Jonathan W | Jun 27 2023 9:33 utc | 205 That is how it is done. Not sure exactly what. All we know for sure is that Wagner will not be deployed to Belaus as per MoA comments. Posted by: Jonathan W | Jun 27 2023 9:36 utc | 206 and as for the “insurrectionists” in the US, don’t hold your breath. the US seems suddenly so petty… Posted by: Jonathan W | Jun 27 2023 9:38 utc | 207 Thomas @ 96 Posted by: young | Jun 27 2023 9:50 utc | 208 that wasn’t probably on anyone else’s mind but mine but what a delicious contrast: on Capitol Holl the valiant representatives of the people are running around scared when there are mostly peaceful (to coin a phrade) protests, while real insurrectionists in Russia are shown some real magnanimity within a few days. In the US they would be rotting in isolation without charges for months. Posted by: Peale | Jun 27 2023 11:44 utc | 234 Is it possible that Prigozhin’s march of the mercenaries was actually a Putinesque auto-coup to give even more official power to the security services in order to further stifle lawful internal dissent, i.e. that Russia is moving from authoritarianism to outright totalitarianism? Posted by: Exile | Jun 27 2023 12:22 utc | 243 One more: Posted by: Exile | Jun 27 2023 12:27 utc | 244 Prigozhin success with Wagner in bakhmut went up to his head! He thought he could lead Russia army better than shoigu or even Putin. He soon realized that he was very small because no one would follow him as he is not more than an astute business man with some talent in leading and persuading. Posted by: Virgile | Jun 27 2023 12:30 utc | 245 Just listened to a very interesting podcast (https://www.corbettreport.com/interview-1813-wtf-just-happened-in-russia-with-rolo-slavskiy/) of James Corbett talking to “Rolo Slavskiy” https://roloslavskiy.substack.com/ who claims to be a Ukrainian born blogger, educated in the US and now living in Russia – a pro Russian who is very critical of the ossified Kremlin, and in particular of Shoigu. His understanding of how the SMO began, it’s initial aim, how it then progressed and changed makes a lot of sense to me. That is like the Japanese Kantai Kessen decisive battle doctrine, which they didn’t ever achieve against US. In this case, there is a (de-facto) decisive battle, which, eventually, due to strength differences will turn out cheaper than a substituting 5 years of guerrilla warfare. Posted by: unimperator | Jun 27 2023 13:29 utc | 253 Yesterday afternoon, RAF 135 AWACS was followed by two Eurofighters to the very edge of RF’s airspace, trampling over NOTAM as it is not there. Posted by: Lex | Jun 27 2023 13:56 utc | 257 I don’t have talking points, and I don’t know what’s going to happen, except that this war will continue to be stupid, murderous cluster****, and barflies will continue to try to assemble a grand cohesive narrative out of it. We may see a few more weeks of the Ukraine Offensive fizzle and then a sudden call for negotiations – ordered by the US. I read that at the rate Ukraine is going, it will only take 16 years to get their territory back. Posted by: ostro | Jun 27 2023 15:23 utc | 272 There is more than the usual quantity of unhinged babble being published on the internets since the Wagner Revolution(tm). An impressive, opportunistic political head-fake if I ever saw one. Posted by: Bemildred | Jun 27 2023 15:27 utc | 273 Today, Putin has made two short addresses that I’m going to post in full. First was this speech to “the units of the Ministry of Defense, the National Guard, the FSB, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the FSO, which ensured order and legality during the rebellion”:
Putin’s second address was given at a “Meeting with servicemen of the Ministry of Defense”:
It should be obvious why I applied the emphasis. I ask this question: Is Putin lying to the nation about those killed in this revolt? S has said he isn’t. But as I write last night regarding Larry Johnson’s latest article, the lack of such evidence is very odd. I prefer to take Putin’s word until it’s disproven, but that doesn’t negate Johnson’s hypothesis. Re. the previous thread.. Try not to be so dramatic: Posted by: LightYearsFromHome | Jun 27 2023 16:17 utc | 289 Jihad Julian twitter Posted by: Melaleuca | Jun 27 2023 16:18 utc | 290 So a new wonder weapon is being considered, trouble is DPICM was designed to maximise the effectiveness of NATO artillery, when facing a typical battalion or regimental sized attack. The munitions had a fail rate of anything up to 10-40% and the Soviets countered the bomblets with reactive armour roof mounts, or rubberised coatings to interfere with the fusing. Russian tactics have markedly changed since the Cold War and with smaller target foot prints, bomblets will become far less effective, especially as the previously mentioned passive defence systems have improved. Final point, Russian, and probably Ukraine, have already used cluster munitions without their use breaking the deadlock, quite how aged munitions are going to resurrect the corpse that is the Ukrainian offensive is anyones guess.
