Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
June 9, 2023
Kursk 2.0?

Lazy and arguably biased as I am, I will just present the analysis (slightly edited) of the former Swedish officer and defense politician Mikael Valtersson:

ANALYSIS UKRAINIAN COUNTEROFFENSIVE ZAPORIZHIA AFTERNOON JUNE 9

Hard fighting continues along the Zaporizhia front, but with no Ukrainian breakthrough. Sometimes UkrAF makes small gains and then RuAF retakes the lost territories. But all fighting are still being conducted in the grey area in front of the Russian main defence lines.

bigger

I will not go into details about attacks and counterattacks, but the main areas of fighting has been centred around Lobkove to the west, and Robotino to the south, of Orikhiv. Lobkove was captured a short while by Ukrainian forces, but later they retreated due to intense Russian bombardments.

bigger

In Robotino Russian forces retreated to the second line of forward positions closer to the settlement, then Russian forces retook the lost positions and presently Ukrainian forces has taken them a second time and now Russian forces try to retake the first line a second time. But still the Ukrainians has not reached the settlement of Robotino and they are fighting an uphill battle in open terrain through Russian minefields and might have to withdraw a second time to their original positions.

bigger

The Ukrainian forces don't seem to sweep mines in advance of the attack. They do it with a couple of mine clearing vehicles when they attack and behind them the Ukrainian armour advance in a column that is an easy target for Russian AT assets. In a way it resembles the Russian armour columns in the beginning of the war. Columns that took catastrophic losses to Ukrainian AT weapons, a history now repeated by the Ukrainians.

In advance of an offensive, the attacking side must secure air and artillery superiority, so they can shield their mine clearing operations and troop concentrations. And at the same time destroy the defenders command structures and logistical hubs. Finally when they attack their air and artillery superiority can be utilised to severely hurt and slow down enemy reserves to secure breakthroughs. This becomes even more important if the enemy has large reserves and a defence in depth.

On the Zaporizhia front the situation is the opposite, so Ukrainian forces hasn't many choices how to act. One method is to achieve strategic surprise as in the Kharkiv offensive last autumn. That option doesn't exist on the Zaporizhia front. In general I would say that an attack towards an enemy who has all the benefits RuAF has on the Zaporizhia front is suicidal.

The only way Ukrainian (and western) commanders even could have contemplated that such an offensive could succeed was if

  1. western weapons were much superior to Russian weapons,
  2. western trained soldiers much superior to Russian soldiers and
  3. Russian morale was dismal.

If all these factors where true, UkrAF might have had a chance to succeed, but nothing seems to corroborate those assumptions.

Many on the Ukrainian and western side had anticipated hard initial resistance from RuAF, but after 2-3 days fighting and advances of around 6-8 km, they expected an increasing collapse of Russian morale and the real breakthroughs would come. Nothing of this seems to be other than wishful thinking, since fighting still are in the grey zone and Russian resistance are unbroken. At the same time Ukrainian forces take heavy casualties both in soldiers and vehicles.

The offensive isn't over yet and the main Ukrainian attack fist remains with probably over 600 tanks and as many IFVs around Orikhiv. But the future for the Ukrainian offensive looks bleak if their vanguard is destroyed before they reach the Russian main defence lines. The probability is large that Ukraine has to use up their main force to get through a couple of the Russian defencelines and then they will run out of forces to exploit any successes and be forced to withdraw.

To summarise, the most likely outcome of the Ukrainian offensive is minor territorial gains at a horrendous cost.

As I've said before it seems to be Kursk 2.0

I largely agree with the above assessment (even though Kursk 1.0 was much larger and way more balanced).

The biggest tactical mistake I see on the Ukrainian side is the bunching up of vehicles. The distance between combat vehicle on roads and in open fields should be 100 meter, not 10, 5 or 1 meter like in the picture below. The Ukrainian columns regularly get slaughtered by artillery strikes because they always(!) bunch up. Keeping distances is a basic training lecture for any combined arms warfare unit.

bigger

Where are the air defenses? Ukraine has received 37 German Gepard (cheetah) air defense tanks. These are old but can keep the air clean,  each within a 10 kilometer wide bubble. The Gepards were specifically designed to cover tank and mech-infantry battalions in battle. But judging from the number of drone videos the Russian can put out, there is not one Gepard in the whole area.

Also where are the electromagnetic measures. Why can Russian artillery directing drones fly over the combat zone but not Ukrainians?

Why are no fog grenades used by Ukrainian artillery to cover the approaches and breaching attempts by Ukrainian armor?

How are piecemeal commitments, wave after wave but hours apart, going to change anything when what is needed are massive consistent pushes to get through?

Folks, these are basics, not higher level operational or strategic issues. I have drilled these basics into conscripts. If you can't even get those right, after allegedly intense 'western' training, what hope is there to breach through seriously prepared Russian defense lines?

None.

Here is some of the damage done to last night's and today's morning attacks by an allegedly prime Ukrainian unit, the 43rd 'western' trained brigade, that uses prime 'western' equipment.

bigger

Here is video of more.

The first serious probing attacks for the counter offensive started on June 5. I have listed the Ukrainian losses the Russian Ministry of Defense has since reported. Note that these numbers are mostly for the whole front, not just for the Zaporizhia region.

bigger

These numbers are, like in most frontline reports, likely too high. But even if one only takes them at half or a third for real they are still frightening high.

bigger

A whole brigade, more likely a third each of three brigades, has been wasted for zero gains.

Consider that we are five days in and the Ukrainian forces, despite using Leopards and Bradleys, their main forces, have hardly crossed the first contact line. The real Russian first defense lines are still miles away and there are three or more of those.

The History Legends Youtube channel calls this a disaster.

I agree with that too.

The only way Ukrainian (and western) commanders even could have contemplated that such an offensive could succeed was if…

It seems clear that it is not reasonably possible to believe that western military leaders or western leaders nor Zelensky believe that this offensive might succeed.
Which begs the question: What are they actually doing?
The situation was moderately humiliating (with regard to Russia vs the entire west and there modern weapons) up to this point – well actually the weapons supply seems something of a sick joke – but now this is just inhumane.
I have the impression that Zelensky is putting himself in a position where he can say that this part (at least) is not his fault.
I suspect that the Ukrainian military has gone rogue and there is a collapse of command structure and is choosing to go down in flames, but after the conscripts that they yanked of the street a week ago.

There was some news or rumors circulating today that Biden (or Nato head) had told Zelensky that AFU needs to go at least 10km through the current front to have a better-than-mediocre chance of getting new support from Nato July meeting.

I have been critical here 1 or 2 times of the way Russia has deployed and used their attack helicopters. They have been nearly non-existent most of the times. This is due to two things. They are concerned about MANPADS, and not necessarily Stingers. I would fear the SA 8-10-12’s more than Stingers. This is because the range of their missiles is not long enough compared to that of the SA’s.
They also seem to keep the RW assets in the Air force, which is too many layers of command and a different culture. RW should be in the Army, and in a combined arms team where 1 COL can direct them for ground support.
As I have read the report on the “offensive” statements that the helicopters of the Russian ARMY are attacking and turning the battle field. So, maybe they reorganized?
Another aspect is that Russia is probably using more new LMUR, which has a longer range than the Vikhr. Videos shown so far are of the Vikhr, so good OPSEC keeps the newest technology from being shown.
As for MANPADS, they are great for defense, not so good for offense. Kind of like charging archers, you just don’t see that.
My comparison for historical battles in the Marianas Turkey Shoot, part of the battle of the Philippine Sea. For Japan, too many new pilots without enough training, depleted command structure (due to a string of losses)
And the use of attack helicopters to thwart a large ground attack shouldn’t be surprising. The Apache was created to apply firepower in the “Fulda Gap Scenario” of the cold war. Maneuverable and quickly deploy-able “air artillery” with extreme hit to kill ratios. That Russia hadn’t used this capability much before now may have been a factor (or serious error) in the planning of the offensive.

Every army that survives the initial contact improves, that rate of that improvement is then driven by which side is able to
1. Increase their overall proficiency
2. Match their force pool and its structure to strategic objectives
3. React to the current/future situation with improvements to SOP’s (enhanced by 1) and improvement programmes to existing platforms (the 21st Century conflict is a come as you are affair, with a bit of on-site tailoring).
Russia started off with a force that was uneven in its capabilities, over a year of combat has smoothed the inevitable wrinkles that occur when an army is asked to undergo a near-paradigm shift whilst rapidly expanding. Historians will rightly say that the Russian victory was made from many bricks, but the cement that bound them was an ability to learn from mistakes and rapidly disseminate those lessons. A much over-looked reason for the Red Armies historical victories.

…upcoming Russian offensive?

Kharkov from Belarus? Nukes there will be finalized in couple days (hmm, right around time of NATO exercise). With nukes and a very clear statement to the Pentagon to stay well clear of Belarus or else, those troops could move on and take Kharkov while the AFU is deep in the shit with its counteroffensive. It would be a bold plan. One thing is for sure the RF must have plans beyond the trenches, dragon’s teeth, and minefield laid out in the pull back last fall, I can’t imagine they are going to just sit there behind defensive lines year after year.

@42
. . .it’s something of a show, some kind of lethal sick pantomime (my words). All we can ask is why?
@3
What are odds that NATO learns from its mistake and next year attacks only after an effort to establish air Supremacy?
Not next year; next week.
Nobody here has mentioned, amidst all the celebrating, that the massive Air Defender ’23 exercise starts Monday. There’s your “missing” air superiority. I have no doubt they will engage. That’s what NATO planners, who are not incompetent, are taking into account. The pantomime is here just to increase the surprise—not against the Russian command, who are well aware, but against the celebrating grunts.
And the offensive will still fail, unless NATO are willing to go the whole hog, with tactical nukes.

I think we are approaching a moment that will show if the Polish government is wise – or are utter fools (a Polish joke).
There is a push to get EU nations to send troops to Ukraine as per Rasmussen. The Poles will likely head the list of candidates.
All Poland has to do is make dramatic public noises about supporting Ukraine and hating Russia and do nothing else. After Ukraine crumbles, they will probably get new territory for free, if they play their cards right. No expense or sacrifice required, just wait for their moment.
I do wonder if EU soldiers lack enthusiasm for being sent to the meat grinder. I think numbers of NATO volunteers have declined in Ukraine and many would rather quit the military altogether

Pitting Ukraine against Russia to make sure both never ever unite, or even cooperate on any issue… To kill as many Ukrainians as possible in the fight against the Russians and as many Russians in the fight against the Ukrainians is the solution.
There is a film from the 1970s called “The Run”. It tells the story of the Russian Imperial Army fighting the Red Army in Crimea during the Russian Civil War. The commander in chief of the Imperial Army orders his field commanders to fight the advancing Reds to their own last soldier…in the belief that if any of their soldiers survive, they will switch over to the Reds’ side. And, historically, that’s exactly what was happening — with reference to General Wrangel’s memoirs.

I’ve said many times some people would be shocked by the scale of it. They are only just getting going.
The Nazis always had more of everything than some people thought. The leaks of not having enough man power and not enough ammunition was pure propaganda. To the point many people thought they didn’t have enough for a counter offesive.

This is interesting https://t.me/IntelRepublic/21844 it’s the first time I’ve seen soldiers this young, on either side. Ther were a very few young soldiers in the first weeks of the SMO but those were soon replaced throughout the theater by 35-60y/os. Strange war considering it’s supposedly existential for both sides; while middle aged working class family men risk life and limb, the younger set goes on with their comfy computer work lives, go to the big malls, cafes, and restaurants.
Whatever the war’s outcome this dichotomy in responsibility can only have a corrosive effect on Russian society same as all the wars have had on American society since the post Vietnam all volunteer military. Plus, what I always wondered keeping the young out of a war seen as existential then green boys inexperienced with both life and war would have to rescue the seasoned adults if they got into the shit, or just winnowed out, seems backwards, and very dangerous.
From that video, maybe Russia has called up a lot more of the society than they let on and are actually rotating a percentage of conscripts into the battle zone? IMO that would be essential, most importantly to take the measure of the 18-25ys and find your next field commanders, that’s really why they need to get the conscripts into the battle.
I hate to see young people sent to war but it’s a positive sign on the part of Russia, they are actually mobilizing the whole society. If that is really what this clip indicates.

COULD IT BE (Update)?
Could it be that the West knew the current Ukrainian offensive would be a failure before it ever began?
Could it be that the West was putting pressure on Zelensky to launch the current offensive not so much to win but to give the West an excuse to signficantly increase major escalations against Russia.
NOTE: It appears that the West is preparing to escalate to direct NATO involvement against the Russians.
Could it be that the West needed a decisive Ukrainian defeat before NATO launched its NATO “Air Defender 23” exercise between June 12th to June 24th?
Could it be that the NATO “Air Defender 23” exercise will bloom towards full blown NATO attacks upon the Russian Federation?
Could it be that nuclear war is soon coming?

Posted by: young | Jun 9 2023 21:35 utc | 118

One thing that seems to be in evidence is that the RuAF have had a year and a half of live-fire exercise to craft their ability to take on a near-peer force, trained and equipped with NATO equipment and ostensibly with NATO tactics, or at least a bastardized Ukie version of them, while NATO forces remain mere observers with little or no real idea of how they might fare when they finally throw themselves into the fire.
One can only hope that NATO has opened its eyes to the possibility that they might not actually be a superior force. This battle may not be on the level of a Kursk … perhaps the Battle of Lyvov might.

Given the cost and relative scarcity of these attack platforms, and their crews, they have been wisely risk-averse in their employment in situations where their presence is not critical. Secondly, the doctrine of ‘rotor is to track as track is to boot’ that had informed the design and employment of the Soviet-era rotary platforms is redundant, leaving a combat arm that is feeling it’s way forward as it rapidly evolves.

AFAIK the thing with Polish soldiers in Ukraine – there’s a lot of opposition in Poland to send them there. Some months ago the rumor was that they will put soldiers into Lvov oblast to “secure” it, essentially meaning becoming Polish protectorate and joining EUzato that way.
But whether they would like to send Polish troops to central or eastern Ukraine is an entirely different matter and the opposition to that is very harsh. But for sure Polish mercs are there en-masse already, and they also attacked Belgorod villages.
You see, the Nato strategy is to get RU pop blood boiling to the point that they will demand to take Kharkov, do something to defend Belgorod, nuke Kiev, go to Polish border etc. etc. One of the thing with Belgorod was also to make Russia commit their troops from the south there to weaken the south – which now turned out to be a ploy they didn’t fall for. Which was another potential bullet dodged.
The good thing is that Belgorod seems to be relatively quiet now and the RDK (Russia volunteer corps) is pretty much dumped in the trash bin of history. Another short lived British propaganda BS show.

From his blog:

Ten (10!!!) ships for Pacific Fleet simultaneously at the shipyard which a few years ago was on the verge of disappearance. Larger FFGs of Gorshkov-class are also coming. Half of those listed ships are 3M22 Zircon carriers. The dynamics of the rearmament of the Pacific Fleet is mind boggling once one begins to add submarines, both SSKs and nukes.
Pacific Fleet will have three of those very soon and they, together with Marshal Shaposhnikov ARE carriers of hyper-sonic strike weapons NOW. Not in some future but now.
Even considering a relatively weak AD of Shaposhnikov, all pr. 20380 and 20385 carry an outstanding Redut air-defense complex, which allows a detachment of such ships (with attached sub and patrol forces), usually 3-4 surface ships to control a gigantic area of more than 3.5 million square kilometers. It is also easily the distributed force–a thing which, as an example, top-heavy US Navy cannot do realistically, unless one considers LCS a real combat ship, which they are not.

Many of the “conscripts” talked about have actually been press ganged into service. Yes, there are some volunteer (i.e. Nazi) brigades, but I don’t think they represent more than a small fraction of the Ukrainian forces. Then there is the question of leadership, both at the top where Zaluzhny their commander and Budanov their military security guy are notably MIA (and I suspect many other seasoned but less famous officers have been eliminated over the last 15 months), and perhaps more critically at the non-commissioned officer level. Those recruitment methods and personnel losses could explain the unprofessional behavior of Ukrainian forces, especially their armor troopers, in the heat of battle. Those guys go forward already rightly scared out of their minds knowing they have no real airpower, no ground-based air defense force, a shortage of ammunition, especially of artillery shells, and that they serve in an army willing for whatever reason to sacrifice its soldiers in great numbers as happened very recently in Artyemovsk (that kind of news travels fast in the ranks, regardless of Western propaganda efforts to suppress it). I’d bet heavy money that morale generally in the Ukrainian army is in the cellar, a fact that could explain its lousy performance this last week.

They’re probably bunching up because their coms are blocked, and same explanation for taking themselves out with mines not cleared.
Also, they’re novices on the tanks, and not using the gizzies to push in front of them to push the mines’ blasts ahead of them.
Plus, also shooting anyone who appears to be retreating.
They’re getting creamed, and lots of reports from people in Ukraine this morning that Zelenskyy wants talks now… which I think could be believable because also reports or media hints that their Western support is turning on them.

Could it be that the West was putting pressure on Zelensky to launch the current offensive not so much to win but to give the West an excuse to signficantly increase major escalations against Russia.

I don’t know about the nuclear war part, but it is very possible that the Pentagon understood after Kherson, when Russia went to a defensive position to hold the Donbas and protect Crimea that the AFU could not possibly defeat Russia in eastern Ukraine anymore. Realizing that it’s either broker a deal of some sort or a DMZ. Seeing that this war has been in the planning since 1997 if not since 1991, and it’s part of a twofer with China, I doubt a deal is an option for the west.
This is a hybrid war first and foremost, so, yes NATO and Zelesnky could be creating an intentional military disaster of their army, which having been determined incapable is to be replaced with a more capable NATO army. It would revitalize the failing drama, growing cynicism, and waning viewership, the western msm and their readership will love – A Rescue! The Cavalry Riding Over The Hill.
There will be bluster here from the usual blusterers that NATO is in over their heads and absolutely incapable of going to war, but NATO and the USA at this point are just making it up as they go along, and they’ve got everything wrong till now and that hasn’t stopped them one bit.
I fear the Pentagon, Whitehall, and NATO generals like sharks have tasted blood, have gone full Berserker, are having a Wargasm, and nothing will turn them back anymore, just the denouement, the cocaine like depression crash of death and defeat coming to them.
IOW the western military is lusting for NATO to enter the conflict, a once in a century opportunity, and I don’t see any sane politicians in charge anywhere in the west to restrain them. Maybe, just maybe, the RoW, India, KSA, Turkiye, Hungary can trip them up, you can see them trying.

Someone suggested it earlier, but it’s very possible Nato rushed this attack as a means to end SMO one way or the other. They want a ceasefire to rebuild, take Ukraine into Nato and use it again as a disposable c#ndom in 2 years, along with the rest of RU border states like Finland, Baltics and Poland. They are clearly building those states up as fat pigs to slaughter.
That’s why Zelensky went basically all-in everywhere on the front: remember, the objective per Blinken is to obtain a “better position in the negotiation table”. They had some success near Artemovsk apparently, but considering the slaughter house in Zaporozhye, Artemovsk is a side show (albeit it is very good if they can contain AFU advance). Once main forces around Zaporozhye destroyed, it will affect everything everywhere else on the long front line.
It’s a very similar web of alliances, military mobilizations and political escalations as pre-WW1, which also was not by accident by far.

Three very different possibilities, intentional fail to escalate with a NATO intervention, intentional fail to deescalate for NATO to regroup down the road, or what is most likely, that it is what it is, unintentional failure, they are simply fucking it up and losing. And yes, from a big RF picture, it’s only one smallish front the MoD are currently managing for national security defence against the hegemon attachers all around them. Some people (the MSM morons) think Putin just sits at his desk biting his nails, obsessing over the Donvass front.

To the most cynical, this might be considered a “fringe benefit” of the current strategy, but this is not the primary purpose of the suicide run. When we see something so predictably bad as this offensive unfold as predicted by many experts, I think some of us on the sidelines attempt to rationalize it, given that some of us may refuse to think the western planners are so “stupid,” and that there MUST be a Machiavellian design to explain it. While I would not put “stupid” past many of them, I think that sober western planners understand that this is a “Hail Mary” offensive. But to the idealogues and the most ruthless among them (the ‘Fuck the EU types), it is worth the attempt because they are playing with “house money” (Ukrainian lives). To varying degrees, they also believe their own propaganda regarding the Russian military. Remember, Western democracy is primarily a show. Westerners are plied with conveniences and abundance and soothed with illusions in the Media and Hollywood (two sides of the same coin). Double-think is a survival skill in the Western corridors of power. So, undoubtedly there are many who believe that the Ukrainians can be successful without basic air support, including many of the Ukrainians themselves. There were enough people who thought this could work, in other words, and did not consider it a primary purpose, by killing all the soldiers, to deprive Russia of converts once the reality of the Elenzsky Regime’s betrayal is revealed. To my mind, the proof that the professionals in the West know the true threat of the Russian army is in the fact that NATO has not committed flagged forces to this conflict. They would have done so much earlier if they thought they could win. This does not mean, however, they are averse to ridding themselves of old weaponry and using the Ukrainians as guinea pigs.

You are right. I think RF is using a duo of MI-28N and Ka-50 keeping at the the distance. At night MI-28 illuminates the target, guides a missile or does EW, KA-50 is just firing stuff when locked at. MI-28 also has better radar and IR. They work networked.
I think Vihr now has a longer range at around 8+ km, so that helps a bit, true.
But if there was ever NATO’s idea to defend Fulda Gap with just air power and Apache, that sort of warring would not be fun, for Soviets or NATO, regardless. Pending on what is in the air as a support, from NATO side.
MI-24 was a flying tank-land forces hunter, with impressive firepower, now discarded from RF military. It did some rather successful suppression in Afghanistan and elsewhere, had its time of glory.
It was meant to be supported by SU-25, and MIG-29 which is pretty powerful attack trio.
Do not know if that was ever in really put in practice as in combined air forces.(“combined wings” would be more correct), but that was the doctrine for just in case.
In case of Soviet Army ever reaching Fulda or Kassel, the USA Cold War doctrine was to nuke those cities first in Europe, also Rotterdam at the later stage. What an ally.
So far, the distance with glide airbombs, thermobarics and fragmentation would be rather comfortable 40-80 km from the targets with speed runs for depth and safe runs from afar.
That is pretty devastating, if one has such heavy capability of a depth reach.
It hits ammo and gathering points, too. Forcing Ukrainians to think very hard about the distance, as nobody sane would drive to the front-line the whole night in a early daylight traffic jam.
As seen everywhere on TV. Good job German MIC, btw.
It also all depends when and where Ukrainian AA shows and what kind of.
Now add this aerospace bombing to the artillery of all kinds and sorts, with well armed, trained and prepared crew on the ground.
How can you win through? Indeed.

HD videos
@Petri Krohn | Jun 9 2023 19:24 utc | 56

The first two damage photos show the same clusterfuck. A column of tanks and IFVs has tried to drive through a line of buried TM-62 anti-track mines. The second photo shows six armored vehicles with labels. At least four of the vehicles have lost their tracks, maybe also the Leopard 2A6. The first photo from ZSU Hunter shows four additional M2A2 Bradleys. This photo is taken at a later time, as it shows track marks that do not appear in the first photo.
It seems that the four additional Bradleys tried to pass the clusterfuck by driving around from the right. Each one in turn hit an anti-track mine and lost a track. A fifth Bradley may also have been disabled, but it is off screen.

All the photos in this blog post are screenshots from these two videos:

There are eleven armored vehicles in total in the cluster. All of them have lost their tracks to anti-track mines. This includes the T-55 based BMR-2 mine clearing tank. The second video shows some of the disabled M2A2 Bradleys being hit by artillery, or maybe grenades dropped from a quadcopter.

Of course NATO might go in when Ukraine is losing badly.
But did you consider that NATO might have been planning to go in if Ukraine’s offensive turns out unexpectedly successful?
After all, the U.S. joined the 2nd World War when it became clear that the Soviets were going to take care of Germany and its allies with or without U.S. intervention. The U.S. went in to keep the Soviets from marching straight to Spain. And to claim victory. Of course.
If it looked like the Ukrainian Army were winning, U.S., UK, and EU armies would magically turn up. Claiming a part of the victory – and an even bigger part of the loot. Of course.
The only question would be how to define success. Obviously no one expects Ukraine to retake all lands held by Russia anymore. So, would it be enough if Ukraine had taken hold of some Russian border towns, and breaks through Russian defense lines? How far would they have to go for NATO to join the fight?
I wonder if this possibility is one reason that the Russian Army is now fighting for every inch instead of falling back to prepared defense lines. Because such falling back might be construed as weakness, and that might bring the pack of NATO hyenas down on them.

Military psychologists claim that when soldiers lost their tactical trained positions, cohesion, because of panicking, before an overwhelming enemy, they use to ” bunch” together, in fear of their possible fate. An exemple is the Mother of all Battles: Custer/ Little Bighorn, where a bunch of soldiers, made a cluster and were defeated, some chose suicide, instead of be taken prisoner of the Indians.
Maybe this can explain the Ukrainian performance.

re: There are eleven armored vehicles in total in the cluster.
I was just reading some Daily Kos, the neolib bible, to get an idea of their reaction to events. They are aware of the track losses, but say they are easy to fix. . .They are not. Huge tank recovery vehicles make good targets also, and even if they are repaired they are never invincible.
“Now go back to that picture at the top of the disabled Leopard and M2 Bradleys …They’re not destroyed. They’re disabled. They hit mines. That means they’re temporarily out of commission, but not out of the war. Either that Leopard, or another one we haven’t seen yet, has already been pulled back by Ukraine and is under repair: ” . .here

Because this is the tactic the West and NATO have used for the last fifty years. It’s worked wonderfully against the sheepherders, women, children and armies on camels. In NATO’s minds the Russians are just as subject to their intellectual and physical power as the millions that have died before. Why change when you have been so successful?

The same can be said for the Kursk, also sunk by its own torpedo. That is why it was raised by the Dutch Mammoet company, its bow cut off, and towed underwater back to its base, so as not to embarrass the Russian leadership.

People talk about NATO like some amorphous THING which can go here and there according to some military ideologues sitting round a table full of water bottles … or the geoolitical whims of a few US neocon planners, all with the flick of some mystical switch.
But NATO is in fact just a bunch of inert metal machinery sitting in sheds, enlivened by the citizens of some 30 countries. Those soldiers are citizens (ie, voters, sons, brothers, husbands) of some elected party, parliament, and national leader who would never agree to voting “yes” unless he felt his party and position and social fabric could sustain such an operation on behalf of his country’s national defence security. Sure, 10% of NATO has previously rushed off to “help” some weak state against some other (undesired) weak enemy, and used their staff to clandestinely support “The Goodies” within convenient ops, such as in Ukraine. But THIS is very different
Despite the MSM humbuggery, imho, The People of Europe are far far from agreeable to sending their militaries into War Against Russia. Imo … it.just.aint.gunna.happen.
And all the above is against the military backdrop of how futile those men and machinery would actually be. People rightly talk about Ukraine’s suicide tendencies. Ha, that ain’t nothing compared to the political suicides NATO vs Russia would unleash within the EU! The French are currently up in arms about a little pension tweaking. Ha! Imagine Le Kerfuffke if Macron agreed to send in NATO. THAT’S WHY he’s constantly playing the peacemaker. His political life is on a razor’s edge. So too Sholz’s.
Armchair commentators should just let NATO forces sleep happily in their beds and practise their scary little PR war games to feel self-important — instead of endlessly bloviating about “if/when NATO comes into Ukraine”. And many more knowledgeable military analysts than me tend to agree.

Assuming this Attack is NATO planned it is very likely done by US-Personal. Taking into account how much the Biden Administration is attacking the EU/German economy this usage of leopard tanks makes perfectly sense to eliminate a competitor on weapon sale. Let’s expect that it is the abrahams intended to finish the operation in Krimea to finally get the prize.
Another aspect I do consider but can not judge so far, that this is part of the war of the billionarys against rest of mankind as declared by Warren Buffet in New York Times 2006 with goal to devastate the Western country s.
“There’s class warfare, all right,” Mr. Buffett said, “but it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning.”

Three very different possibilities, intentional fail to escalate with a NATO intervention, intentional fail to deescalate for NATO to regroup down the road, or what is most likely, that it is what it is, unintentional failure, they are simply fucking it up and losing. IMHO, door number three.
Preparing for war is making a living, getting promoted (always the first objective), playing in the dirt and retiring. War fighting is risky. NATO has been making a good living for many. Why risk it or get killed, even worse disabled? Getting agreement out of 30 odd countries is a nuisance. Open that subsidiary in Japan. Good for many trips.

They are psychotic despots with a blood lust that makes them blind to their own surroundings. They are really astounded that Ukraine so far has not been able to push Russia from these positions with the weapons they gave to them. They still believe with just a little more pressure and Russia will collapse in to a broken pile. And when will they see it differently? NEVER! The Western world is insane and blinded by their on lust! Will they ever back down? NEVER! Not until they are completely destroyed. Amidst many events today, Putin was asked about the Ukie Offensive:

Question: Yesterday there was a lot of news from the front. Both the Chief of the General Staff [Valery Gerasimov] and the Defence Minister [Sergei Shoigu] reported good yesterday.
Is it possible to say that the Ukrainian counteroffensive choked and we managed to neutralize the offensive potential of the Kiev Mode?
Vladimir Putin: Now I need to switch sharply from one topic to another, but what can I do say.
First, it can be stated quite accurately, that this offensive has begun. This is evidenced by the use of strategic reserves of the Ukrainian army. First.
Second. Not in any of the areas of hostilities Ukrainian troops did not achieve the tasks assigned to them. It’s absolutely An obvious thing.
The fighting, as I said, is intense for five Days. For example, for yesterday, the day before yesterday – for two days previous ones – they were very intense and the enemy was not in any of the areas It was not successful.
This is all achieved thanks to courage and heroism our soldiers, proper organization, proper command and control of troops and high the effectiveness of Russian weapons, especially modern weapons.
Yes, we still do not have enough of these modern weapons, but the defense industry, the military-industrial complex of the country It is developing rapidly, and – I am sure – all the tasks facing the defense industry will be, Of course, resolved. There is an intensive increase in the production of modern species Weapons.
During these days, we are witnessing significant losses of troops of the Ukrainian regime. It is known that during offensive operations, losses are approximately Three to one is a classic. But in this case, it significantly exceeds Classic indicators. I will not reproduce these figures now, but they are Impressive.
I want to note that this tragedy is due to those events that took place in previous years, and responsibility for this The tragedy lies entirely with the current Kiev regime, the primary one whose source of power is a coup d’état, which occurred in Ukraine in 2014.
As for the fact that the offensive has choked – No. In any case, it can be stated that all the measures undertaken so far Counteroffensive attempts failed. But the offensive potential of the troops The Kyiv regime is still preserved.
I proceed from the fact that the military leadership of Russia realistically assesses the current situation and will proceed from these realities in building our actions for the near future.
Thank you.

Today there was a meeting with the Heads of Government of the CIS and EAEU States barflies might be interested in reading after translating as there’re many other things happening.

Freakin revisionist history at this site and across the internet.
No serious account of Little Bighorn has US Army men committing suicide.
Small groups of men were formed to allow for concentrated fire, most of these groups used dead horses as cover.
In the end, they were simply out numbered and outgunned.
Most bodies were mutilated, so cause of death could not be determined.
The other portion of Custer’s forces combined and “dug in” a small hill over 4 miles away. About 50% of them survived, because they had the unit supplies of ammo, food and water.

Nato-trained Ukie army getting clobbered yet? You betcha.
I don’t know but the whole notion of Nato training a Ukie army to ‘Nato standards’ to have the best chance of beating the Russians is absurd. Nato have not fought a conventional war like the one unfolding in Ukraine for a generation. They’ve spent the last 25 years honing their skills (without much success, as we have seen) at fighting insurgencies: COIN, counter-revolutionary, irregular, guerilla, low intensity conflict, unconventional war, call it what you will, around the globe. To expect them to then be able to train Ukies on the art of winning a conventional war against a Russian armed forces trained and equipped to fight a conventional war since 2008 (after the problems faced by RF armed forces in Georgia) is the height of hubris.
At least Zalushny (if he’s not already strapped to life support or buried somewhere) knew better and urged caution.
It’s beginning to look like Nato military experts, advisers and instructors have just finished dusting off their old doctrinal textbooks, shaking off their COIN mentality and beginning to formulate their conventional war tactics with the bonus of having the Ukies try them out in real life. Alas no success.
But no matter. Back to the drawing board, guys.

If the pause is true, might be the perfect time for Russia to start it’s counter offensive, while ukraine tries to regroup and reorganize. The confusion and the arguing about what to do next could be the perfect brew for utter annihilation.

Urgent Another wheeled assault repulsed in Zaporozhye
We have just received a message that fighting continues, half an hour ago our troops repelled another massive attack in the Orekhov-Rabotino sector.
At the scene, as yesterday, there are many burnt armored vehicles. Sources say that the Ukrainians destroyed their own wrecked tank when they realized that it was not possible for it to roll back to the rear on its own.
The enemy was unable to penetrate our defenses and retreated to regroup. The defenders of Zaporozhye are preparing for new enemy actions. The night is not yet over.
We are following developments.

I wouldn’t fret at all about who becomes the new head of NATO. The sillier the better (Johnson or Truss or VDL). They are not a military strategist, a troop commander, or anything more practical than 1 vote at their big meetings. They are called “The Secretary General”, ie, Head of The Typing Pool. They are merely a mouthpiece, a PR guy, a politician in front of a blue flag. They must talk tough, always upbeat about their charter and their “unified” mission. Meanwhile, scared commanders whisper in his ear the foolish realities of actually DOING ANYTHING … unless they have US directives, money, and boots on the ground. The NATO S-G is just a magician, presenting the MSM with smoke and mirrors.

Yes, what you see is what we get. The people we see from Biden outwards (I couldn’t write ‘down’) are fools, ignorant of everything except the minutiae of electoral politics.
Their advisors, who know a lot more, also understand that the last thing their patrons want to hear is uncomfortable news. They are courtiers, Yes men, apologists and smokescreen-layers.
And beyond them in the Academy and the increasingly important Think Tanks are opportunists auditioning for positions at Court, by proving anything anyone wanmts proved and can pay for.
I suspect that the Supreme Soviet and the Politburo, in its final days, was similarly organised. Both sets of ‘leadership’ have simply become unable to pretend any longer that they need ideas. After all they have appetites, which are much more urgent and important to them.
They are losing their grip because they don’t really want hegemony. They don’t need it. Now, more leisure, new sexual partners, a better backhand, a decent souffle- they could go for that, and a pay raise too. But none of them really care who runs the world- they know it doesn’t matter because Haute Finance always has done and always will.

Anne Applebaums new article headline was really telling of Nato planning strategy:
“The real purpose of the Ukrainian offensive is to show the Russians the war is not worth fighting”.
CORRECTION: The real purpose of the Russia annihilation of the Ukrainians, again, is to point out to WESTERN/USA IDIOTS that no matter what thuggery they come up with, the West will lose and the war is not worth fighting. TOMBSTONE UKRAINE

Not saying you are wrong, neofeudal, as i have no idea if Russia is even poised for a counter offensive, nor do i know how ukrainian defenses look, perhaps they are setting up a feint themselves. But, sometimes, if you have prepared for a best case scenario, which is ukraine utterly smashes itself before reaching the first line, sometimes it is best to seize an opportunity. Thats a big “if you have prepared” though. And even well prepared contingencies can go awry if trying to seize an opportunity. But, if Ru prepared for this scenario….

Yes, the NATO sec-gen is merely a spokesperson for the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, the top warmonger of Europe, a general provided by the US of A.

There’s an old saying….. trying to remember… some here will be able to assist….

It’s the most famous of the classic blunders: Never get involved in a land war in Asia. Only slightly less well known is this: Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

Posted by: Intelligent Dasein | Jun 10 2023 3:02 utc | 193

@191 McArthur said something like that about Asia. Bernard Montgomery said ‘Don’t march on Moscow.’

Rule 1, on page 1 of the book of war, is: “Do not march on Moscow”. Various people have tried it, Napoleon and Hitler, and it is no good. That is the first rule. I do not know whether your Lordships will know Rule 2 of war. It is: “Do not go fighting with your land armies in China”. It is a vast country, with no clearly defined objectives.

Correction: Uglegorsk, not Ugledar

@Milites | Jun 9 2023 19:09 utc | 50
2. The columns look remarkably similar to those Russian ones in Ugledar, similar fates for the vehicles?

The battle for Ugledar Uglegorsk happened in the winter of 2014/15. I was in Ugledar Uglegorskin the summer of 2016.

so Trump is charged with possibly 20 years in jail.
I think this is more distraction from the disaster that Joe Biden’s war is coming to.
The american public will be 99% distracted with Trumps troubles to see that Ukraine project has been a complete disaster.
Good luck to Trump. but I don’t really give a damn. Its up to Trump lovers to protect and care about him. Karma is a damn bitch and Trump had some Karma coming to him. He approved the murder of Soleimani after all.
Karma is a bitch.
