Why Kim Dotcom Connects The DNC Email Leak To The Murder Of Seth Rich (Updated)

Last week we learned a new fact about the DNC email leak in 2016 and of the events that likely led to the killing of Seth Rich.

A quite aggressive Wikipedia page discusses the Murder of Seth Rich:

The murder of Seth Rich occurred on July 10, 2016, at 4:20 a.m. in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Rich died about an hour and a half after being shot twice in the back. The perpetrators were never apprehended; police suspected he had been the victim of an attempted robbery.

The 27-year-old Rich was an employee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), and his murder spawned several right-wing conspiracy theories, including the false claim, contradicted by the law enforcement branches that investigated the murder, that Rich had been involved with the leaked DNC emails in 2016. It was also contradicted by the July 2018 indictment of 12 Russian military intelligence agents for hacking the e-mail accounts and networks of Democratic Party officials and by the U.S. intelligence community's conclusion the leaked DNC emails were part of Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections. Fact-checking websites like PolitiFact, Snopes, and FactCheck.org stated that the theories were false and unfounded. The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post wrote that the promotion of these conspiracy theories was an example of fake news.

Well, that is not what really had happened.

Yes, Seth Rich worked as IT administrator for the Democratic National Committee. He was a fan of Bernie Sanders. During the 2016 primaries DNC functionaries did their best to work against Bernie Sanders and for Hillary Clinton. To make that public Seth Rich collected an archive of all DNC emails, copied it onto an USB stick and looked for someone who would publish them.

UPDATE 20:00 UTC

The former British ambassador Craig Murray said that he was given the USB stick by an intermediary of a disgusted Democratic whistleblower and brought it from Washington DC to Wikileaks which eventually published the emails. The data involved were not only from the DNC but also from Clinton's campaign chair John Podesta:

WikiLeaks made the DNC messages public in July and the incriminating emails from Podesta were published in October. The messages predominantly showed that DNC officials were bent on sabotaging the presidential campaign of Bernie Sanders in favor of Hillary Clinton. Murray insisted that the information was leaked and not hacked by Russia.

“Neither of the leaks came from the Russians. The source had legal access to the information. The documents came from inside leaks, not hacks…leakers were motivated by disgust at the corruption of the Clinton Foundation and the tilting of the primary election playing field against Bernie Sanders.”

/End Update/

Craig Murray did not mention Seth Rich. Up to last week we did not know if Seth Rich really made contact with Wikileaks.

But we did know that the DNC was never 'hacked' by anything Russia. The date/timestamps of the leaked files were consistent with local copying and inconsistent with an internet transfer. The company Crowdstrike which was hired to protect the DNC's networks and which did an investigation into the case never observed an actual 'Russian' hack or any data exfiltration from the DNC network. As ITwire wrote in May 2020:

The controversial American security firm CrowdStrike, which was called in to investigate the alleged Russian hack of DNC servers in 2016, had no proof that any emails from the system had been exfiltrated despite public assertions that this had occurred, according to the transcript of an interview released by the US Government a few days ago.

The transcript was from an interview conducted with CrowdStrike's president of services and chief security officer Shawn Henry by the US House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in December 2017, but only released to the US Special Counsel Robert Mueller who conducted a two-year inquiry into alleged Russian collusion in the 2016 presidential poll.

While the exfiltration of emails from the DNC server has been accepted as a proven fact, Henry's answers to queries from committee members make it clear that this was definitely not the case.

In one typical exchange, Henry was asked, "What about the emails that everyone is so, you know, knowledgeable of? Were there also indicators that they were prepared but not evidence that they actually were exfiltrated?" To this Henry responded, "There's not evidence that they were actually exfiltrated. There's circumstantial evidence – but no evidence that they were actually exfiltrated."

PolitiFact, Snopes and FactCheck.org are, unsurprisingly, wrong with their assertions.

But how did the emails find their way to Julian Assange at Wikileaks. Assange has never explained that. But Wikileaks set out a $20,000 reward for finding the killer of Seth Rich. That made it obvious that there was a connection between them but no one gave further explanations of it.

It took until last week for the world to learn more about what really happened. On April 21 some rather pungent NAFO activist, Pekka Kallionniemi, launched a Twitter thread with an attack on a person well known in IT circles:

Pekka Kallioniemi @P_Kallioniemi – 10:09 UTC · Apr 21, 2023

In today's #vatniksoup, I'll introduce a German-Finnish entrepreneur, conspiracy theorist and propagandist, Kim Dotcom. He's best-known for his illegal online activities and projects, for his hate towards the US, and for his unwavering support for Putin's imperialism.
1/18
[…]
In 2017, Dotcom claimed that he worked with Seth Rich, a US citizen and employee on the Democratic National Committee who was murdered during a suspected robbery. His death spawned..
10/18
[…]
..several conspiracy theories stating that he was a whistleblower who had leaked documents damning Hillary Clinton and her campaign manager, John Podesta. The hack-and-leak operation was actually conducted by Russian intelligence service GRU's hacker group called Fancy Bear.
11/18

Who is Kim Dotcom you might ask:

Kim Dotcom (born Kim Schmitz; 21 January 1974), also known as Kimble and Kim Tim Jim Vestor, is a German-Finnish Internet entrepreneur and political activist who lives in Glenorchy, New Zealand.

Dotcom is the founder and former CEO of the defunct file hosting service Megaupload (2005–2012). In 2012, the United States Department of Justice seized its website and pressed charges against Dotcom, including criminal copyright infringement, money laundering, racketeering and wire fraud. Dotcom was residing in New Zealand at the time; at the request of US authorities, New Zealand police raided his home in 2012 and arrested him. Dotcom posted bail and has been going through legal proceedings ever since to avoid extradition to the United States.

In 2017, Dotcom played a role in spreading conspiracy theories about the murder of Seth Rich.

In May 2017 the Washington Post wrote:

When Seth Rich’s Gmail account received an alert this week from Mega.com, attempting to start a new account on a website created by the New Zealand-based Internet businessman and convicted hacker Kim Dotcom, his family knew that something was off.

Over seven frenzied days, Dotcom had become a leading purveyor of the theory that Rich, a staffer at the Democratic National Committee who was shot dead near his home in Northeast Washington last summer, had supplied DNC documents to WikiLeaks and was killed as a result. Multiple security analysts and an FBI investigation have tied the release to hackers with ties to Russia. D.C. police have said repeatedly that they think Rich was slain in a random robbery attempt.

According to experts and Rich’s family, the emailed invitation from welcome@mega.nz appeared to be an attempt to gain access to Rich’s email. Joel Rich, who monitors his late son’s Gmail account when new emails come in, did not click the link. Dotcom had not worked at Mega itself for years, but he was promising on Twitter to prove that the younger Rich had been in contact with WikiLeaks — and Fox News host Sean Hannity was telling his 2.37 million Twitter followers to be ready for a revelation.

Hannity had invited Dotcom to appear on his show for what he said on Twitter would be a “#GameChanger” interview. The implication: that Dotcom would finally offer evidence of his claim that Rich had sent internal DNC documents to WikiLeaks before his death.

All that began to unravel Tuesday afternoon when Fox News retracted a story that had claimed the same Rich-WikiLeaks connection, telling readers that the article was “not initially subjected to the high degree of editorial scrutiny we require for all our reporting.” Fox News did not respond to a request for comment, but Dotcom wrote on his website that he would not speak further about his allegations.

Since then little on the issue was heard from Kim Dotcom. There was no explanation why he was involved in the Seth Rich issue in the first place.

But after Pekka Kallionniemi's attack was widely retweeted Kim Dotcom contested it:

Kim Dotcom @KimDotcom – 0:41 UTC · Apr 22, 2023

🧵 NAFO bullying exposed

I’m responding to an attempted character assassination by NAFO troll @P_Kallioniemi who prides himself with having attacked over 150 “pro-Russian actors and propagandists.”

His problem is that he picked the wrong guy for his cyber bullying.

Who is Pekka? A research fellow at Tampere University in Finland and a self-proclaimed disinformation expert. Ironic because most of the claims in his attack against me are false. I’m tagging the Dean of Tampere University @SaariJuho to make him aware of Pekka’s NAFO bullying.

First of all I’m in good company because some of the people Pekka has bullied on Twitter are @ggreenwald, @mtaibbi, @rustyrockets & @jimmy_dore. None are “Russian propagandists” or “grifters looking to make some easy money” as Pekka claims. They are truth-tellers, like myself.

False claim 1: Kim was deported from Thailand to Germany.<

Truth: I was never deported from Thailand. I left voluntarily.
[…]
False claim 6: Dotcom claimed that he worked with Seth Rich.

Truth: Seth Rich contacted me and offered information about the DNC. I rejected receiving the data personally and forwarded him to someone close to Wikileaks. That’s how Wikileaks got the DNC and Hillary Clinton leaks.

False claim 7: The (DNC) hack and leak operation was conducted by Russian intelligence.

Truth: A forensic analysis of the leaked DNC data by former US intelligence officials proved that it wasn’t remotely transferred. The meta data shows that the files were transferred locally.

The bold part is significant as it is first time that we learn:

  • That there was a direct connection between Seth Rich and Wikileaks.
  • Why Kim Dotcom had involved himself in the Seth Rich case after Rich had been killed.

You may say that the first claim is not new because many had presumed that. But no one involved had ever actually publicly made the claim. Dotcom's assertion of this connection through him is new.

After contacting Kim Dotcom Seth Rich was pointed to someone else near to Wikileaks. Eventually Wikileaks asked Craig Murray to fly to DC and to bring the files to Wikileaks. The  Clinton server emails were published by Wikileaks in March 2016. The DNC emails were published in June and July 2016. The Podesta emails were published in October 2016.

I hope that Kim Dotcom will one day write down the complete sequence of events that are related to Seth Rich and the publishing of the Clinton, Podesta and DNC leaks by Wikileaks.

Ok, so now that everyone has the links.
There is a current FOIA lawsuit to get the contents of Seth’s laptops, personal and work, from the FBI.

FBI wants even more time to produce Seth Rich laptop records
November 30, 2022 by Ty Clevenger
Drip, drip, drip.
On September 29, 2022, U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant ordered the FBI to produce all records related to Seth Rich’s laptop within 14 days.
On October 12, 2022, the FBI asked the Court to stay its order until October 27, 2022. We did not oppose that request, and the Court granted the extension.
On October 27, 2022, the FBI asked the Court to reverse itself and allow the FBI to withhold the laptop records. In the alternative, the FBI said it should be allowed to produce the records over a period of more than 66 years.

The case is still ongoing and you can check the status at the above docket link.
But, the FBI has admitted that they have the computers after denying it for years. Further, they don’t want to release the contents of those computers. Which pretty much tells you all that you need to know.
B, can you get your tech people to look into why my post claim to go through, but never appear, but only when I include the following link?

So, the plausible story looks like this:
DNC Staffer IT Administrator, Seth Rich, who had all the login credentials required to export email archives, is a Sanders supporter. He learns of the now known undermining of the Sanders primary campaign by the Clinton network with the assistance of the corrupt DNC.
He contacts Kim DotCom who refuses to accept evidence and points Rich in the direction of WikiLeaks. Before or after this, Rich creates at least one of the email archives later published by WikiLeaks.
Craig Murray has admitted to traveling to DNC before Rich was murdered to receive information for WikiLeaks, and you reasonably claim that WikiLeaks asked him to do this. Craig has also commented that he led the FBI on a merry chase via several houses of ill-repute where he left decoy thumb drives.
We don’t know how the data moves from Murray to WikiLeaks. It would seem logical for Murray to have already given the data to another person before the merry chase. Perhaps it was a lawyer or an intermediary to deliver to a lawyer (speculation).
The data does make its way to WikiLeaks and vetting and then publication ensue.

Your update from the Daily Mail is misleading by suggesting that Craig Murray claimed that the DNC and Podesta leaks came from the same source. He actually only said that they both came from Americans, and he made it clear to Scott Horton that the two two leaks were separate. That interview was published the day before the Daily Mail piece.

Craig Murray even wrote that the Daily Mail made up the story that he received the USB stick from the leaker. When he later removed that claim from the Wikipedia page about him, he also posted this comment:

I have never said I received anything when I met the leaker. That was a Daily Mail fabrication. Its repetition by the Washington Post does not make it true.)

Murray and Assange often leave out details in order to avoid revealing their sources, and I think that the Daily Mail and others try to read too much between the lines so that it can create a simple story. But what Murray is actually quoted as saying seems believable to me.

Everytime I find myself “blocked” by Typepad, it’s because a space has been inadvertently added to the end of my e-mail address (can’t remember if it’s the same for the name, too). When you let some browsers (i use firefox) autoload e-mail addresses they will add a space at the end of it.
I’m almost 100% certain that’s what’s keeping your posts from going through. Next time it happens, check and see if there’s a space at the end of your posting info. It’s frustrating, but for the last five years every single time I’ve had a post not go through it has been for that reason.

In the context of USUKIS politics , truth is not whether somebody was or wasn’t murdered, but rather that it wouldn’t have mattered if a third of a million Ukranians died fighting Russia in 2022/3 or 2032/3 or 2042/3, the intention remains the same, the Great Game. Same as Erdogan reviving the Armenian genocide with Boris Johnson’s assistance. The anglosaxons always use toxic racist proxies with poisonous
ideologies to divide and rule.
Both the rape and plunder Anglosaxons and their poisonous proxy ideologies are being defeated in Ukraine and Syria. Nobody in the Anglo- microentity and its politicised Nazism, Islamism, Sudanese Sufism , Iranian Shi’ism or Ukranian Nazism cares about poisonous ideologies so long as fresh bananas on British shop shelves only cost 12p.

“I guess Trump is old school empire. You invade a country to take its resources.
I guess he is realistic – pragmatic.”
More precisely, Trump is somewhat intelligent, but in his formative years he was focused on business, not politics. His skills and smarts were focused on extracting money from wealthy people, casino high rollers, seekers of “prestigious” condos, country clubs etc., apparently not so good on financial side but great in salesmanship, “brand building”. I love this Trump’s quote:
“Our nuclear was getting very tired. Now we have it in, as we would say, tippy-top shape. Tippy top. We have new and we have renovated and it’s incredible. We should all pray we never have to use it.” This is how you sell a condo that has a history of plumbing or roof leaks.
Trump was very familiar with retail politics, a must for a developer who must navigate permits, New Jersey Game Commission etc., and has strong preference for information from personal connections that, alas, included his in-laws. The information he gets is translated into developer perspective, quick profit-loss calculus, thus glimpses of “realism”. As a salesman, he is quit in identifying target audience and adapting his language to their preferences, so he may sound like an idiot. But he may sound intelligent too (unlike Biden).

Re: Seth Rich. Of course he was wet-opped by the DemParty end of the DC Swamp. A Texas businessman Ed Butowsky was asked by Fox news associate Ellen Ratner (whose brother had been Julian Assange’s lawyer) to pass the message from Assange to Rich’s parents that Rich had given the emails to Wikileaks, and that this info might help them find closure after the terrible event of Rich’s death. Butowsky did pass the message, but in trying to put pressure to solve the crime, Butowsky found himself (like so many others asking questions about the weird murder)threatened and nuisance-sued. Butowsky counter-sued, and his Legal Complaint of summer 2019 contained the most coherent and plausible published account of the crime. The document was on “scribd” and I copied pieces of it. Names of those involved include: FBI’s Andrew McCabe (who forbid the FBI from responding even to FOIA requests for any files or documents, even though they had some), John Podesta (“We want to make an example of the leaker”), DNC head Donna Brazile (who mentioned with terror Seth’s murder, dedicates her book “Hacks” [sic] to him, and lied about being out of town when she was at the hospital where & when Seth died); DC Mayor Muriel Bowser; NC head replacing Brazile, Wasserman-SChultz, whose brother was in DC law enforcement.

“police suspected he had been the victim of an attempted robbery”. Well, I was a paramedic for 25 years, and I remember pulling a dead guy out of the water with the police marine unit. The deceased had his throat cut and both wrists cut right to the bone, and there were towels wrapped tightly around his neck, and his wrists. The police called it a suicide, until I asked them how the the towels got wrapped around his neck and wrists. Lazy, or stupid, I’m not sure which.

Posted by: madmarc | Apr 25 2023 22:31 utc | 124

I agree with the whole premise being put forward until the end. I think it is very likely that Seth Rich was the leaker, and the whole Kimdotcom -> Wikileaks scenario is perfectly plausible. And then we get to Mr. Rich’s unfortunate death. Whoever did it, I think we can all agree on this:
Seth Rich was shot in the back, was left breathing, and died 1-1/2 hours later.
Would any hit man have done that? About 80% of handgun wounds are non-fatal. Can you imagine any outcome that could have been worse for the Clintons and the leadership of the DNC than to have him survive and tell his tale after an attempted murder? A bullet in the head would have added no risk and ensured such a story never happened. To automatically presume his death was sanctioned by such a powerful organization is pure wishful thinking. Seth Rich’s death was in all probability a bubba robbery gone wrong. If someone can refute what I say, I would like to hear it. I’m always willing to change my opinion when new information is received and I think the Clintons are war criminals. But if you just want to push the assassination story because you want to blame the Clintons for something bad, check your shirt – you’re drooling.

As I noted at the time
A1 If Rich was involved there was no reason for exfiltration of the dats.
A2 If Rich was not involved, there was no reason for Assange to implicate him by offering a reward.
A3 Assange has not been proven to be a liar or stupid and implicated Rich.
A4 Therefore Rich was involved.
A5 Therefore the data was not exfiltrated.
B1 If the data was exfiltrated, there was no reason for Murray to sneak a thumb drive around.
B2 Had Rich not been murdered, Murray would have had no reason to paint a target on his butt.
B3 Murray claimed to have carried a thumb drive to Assange.
B4 Murray has not been proven to be a liar or stupid, and painted at target on his butt by claiming to have sneaked a thumb drive around.
B5 Therefore the data was not exfiltrated.
By two separated sound logical sequences, the parsimonious conclusion is that the data was not exfiltrated.
Claims that data might have been exfiltrated and the datestamps modified are not supported by evidence, add complexity. and require Assange to be stupid or a liar and Murray to be stupid or a liar. Such
contorted conclusions require extremely motivated thinking to accept, which may be why the only people I have met advocating for them are dedicated Democrats and rabid Russophobes.

Posted by: Hermit | Apr 26 2023 3:53 utc | 127

For me the sickest part of this foul saga is the incredible pressure that has been put on Rich’s family to toe the line, to the point of having them launch lawsuits against those who argue it was a deliberate murder.
I can understand Mom & Dad deciding the line of least resistance up to a point but his closest brother who is obviously deeply grieving the murder of Seth has also been passionate in his denial of any funny business. They must all be terrified as nothing else could possibly cause them to shut down one of very few viable lines of inquiry into uncovering Seth’s murderers.
Just thinking about this, even now, makes me angry as at the low life scum who cynically slaughtered a fellow human for the crime of having inviolate principles then terrified the victim’s family to this extent.

Weekender823: When you have “law enforcement” in your pocket, you have the luxury of leaving your victim to suffer a nice slow death. Makes an even better example of him, don’t you think? And besides, it puts a nice patina of “botched robbery” over the act.

It’s been several years since I collected the details, but I would certainly second Brendan’s comments above, regarding what Craig Murray has actually claimed. Many, including Bernhard, have been misled by what the Daily Mail claims Murray told them. However, the fact is that Murray has long ago made it very clear that he personally had no role at all in delivering a thumb drive to Wikileaks.
Though all the statements to the contrary are Daily Mail inventions, I do believe that Murray’s words as actually quoted in the article are probably accurate – and they make no such assertions. In this respect I also agree with Brendan, above. And for whatever it’s worth, I also think the Daily Mail did accurately identify the location of Murray’s famous rendezvous with the Podesta leaker in September 2016. (George Webb’s escapades in that regard were totally off base.) But the central claim the article makes, which I think is repeated six or seven times within it, is not supported by anything Murray has ever said, and has in fact been flatly repudiated by him.
Here’s the actual essence of Murray’s account. There were TWO leakers, both of them Americans: the DNC leaker and the Podesta leaker. Murray’s secret meeting during a visit to DC was with the latter, but it had an “administrative” purpose, and occurred after the relevant files were already in WikiLeaks’ possession (and well after Seth Rich had been murdered and the DNC files published). He has insinuated that this second leaker’s access was related to the NSA’s keeping tabs on Podesta (or his brother?) as a lobbyist for Saudi Arabia. On the other hand, his claimed knowledge of the DNC leaker is not so direct but based presumably on sources in WikiLeaks whom he trusts. And, like Assange, Murray has certainly shown interest over time in the Seth Rich murder case. One is free to draw conclusions from that.
As for references, Petri Krohn probably has better records than I do at this time, but the single best corrective source is Murray’s December 2016 interview with Scott Horton. Robert Parry (quoted by someone above) publicized this interview when it came out, and was also therefore one of the few who got the Craig Murray story right. Other relevant sources on this include Murray’s interview with Randy Credico, and the street interview George Webb and Trish did with him in front of the Ecuadorian embassy.

files were given by people associated by the Trump team.
Seth Rich had nothing to do with this. Fox News even lost a lawsuit because of spreading this fakenews.

Steve Pieczenik even admitted the files were given to Wikileaks in one of his “talks”

it’s Psychological Warfare at its finest, it doesn’t matter to them who wins because they are all the same.
the deepstate swamp was never drained, the Clintons and Trump aren’t enemies like they portray.
its a hoax and the believers are at the tip of the spear eating their popcorn and waiting for their savior.

I have a copy of those files that I received in 2017 and they show all the NGP-Van data collected in the field during the election, as well as monthly transfers of the DNC funds and all the personal data of voters captured by the DNC to The Clinton Foundation.

Boring and overwrought, pedantic commentary
As usual.

It is not the “first time that we learn: That there was a direct connection between Seth Rich and Wikileaks.”
While the call between Butowsky and Seymour Hersh has been mentioned in a few comments here, as far as I can see nobody has referred to Seymour Hersh’s deposition on July 15, 2020 in the case of Aaron Rich vs Butowsky et al.
In Hersh’s testimony on page 95-96,
Q: My question was — and I’ll say it again, because I’m not sure I got a clear answer. Was the information that Seth Rich had made contact with WikiLeaks and that that contact was in Seth Rich’s computer, was that information relayed to you by your source?
A. Yes.

Dotcom has a habit of making statements and not backing them up. For example, where is his proof of the hacked British PM text on Nord Stream bombing? He just comes out with stuff, people get excited, and he never backs up what he says.
Note…I want him to be right. I’m actually on the “same side” as most of y’all. But I’m also VERY aware of the danger of “wishcasting”. And I see a lot of people who fall for it. Oh…and if that makes me a concern troll, I don’t give a damn. I’m interested in the truth. Not what makes me feel better.
