Sanctions On Russia Come Back To Bite Their Issuers

Unlike 'western' politicians I try to think ahead of the consequences certain foreign relation policies might have.

On March 9 2022 I predicted:

The Sanction Backlash Will Push The 'West' To Accept Russia's Demands

For years the U.S. committed policies that have left a lot of countries grumbling. Now, as the U.S. needs support to milden the consequences of 'punishing' Russia, those policies come back to bite. So will the secondary effects of sanctions the 'west' has imposed on Russia.
…
The first [map] shows the countries which banned Russian airplanes from their airspace. Russia in turn denied its airspace to operators from those countries. It will cost quite a bit for U.S. and EU airlines as their flight times and cost to and from Asia, which typically fly through Russian airspace, will now increase. Carriers from Asian countries will now easily out-compete U.S. and European airlines on these routes.

bigger

A year later the Financial Times and Fortune finally wake up to the issue:

Airlines say Chinese carriers have an ‘unfair advantage’ as China reopens: They’re allowed to fly over Russia

“If you’ve got a Chinese carrier that is flying over Russia, they’ve got an unfair advantage over us,” Ben Smith, CEO of Air France-KLM, told the Financial Times on Friday. Smith complained that skipping Russian airspace added “three hours in flight time” for a plane traveling from Paris to Seoul.

Before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, airlines often flew over Russia to connect Asia with destinations in Europe or North America. But Russia barred many Western airlines from using its airspace last February, in retaliation for governments in Europe and North America banning Russian airlines from flying over the West.

European, Canadian and U.S. airlines are thus forced to fly different routes to avoid Russia. Longer flights burn more fuel, meaning higher costs and emissions. Longer flights can also upend tight flight schedules, as well as breach limits on working hours for flight crew.

Yet carriers from several non-Western countries, including China, continue to fly over Russian airspace, allowing them to offer faster and cheaper flights to European and North American destinations.

European airlines are now worried that they’ll lose out on the wave of Chinese rebound travel, as Beijing reopens from years of COVID-era isolation. (Chinese tourism plummeted after the country required all international arrivals—including returning Chinese tourists—to spend weeks in quarantine.)

“It will be very hard to make secondary cities of China profitable in terms of flying,” Topi Manner, CEO of Finnair, said to the Financial Times last week. The closure of Russian airspace has hurt Finnair, kneecapping an effort by the airline to turn Helsinki as a hub for flights connecting northern Asia with Europe.

These were Finnair's most profitable routes before the country sanctioned its flag carrier from using them:

Alex Macheras @AlexInAir – 11:09 UTC · Feb 27, 2022

Finland and Russia have an agreement with guarantees Finnair 80+ round trip flights per week over Siberia, and it’s this Russian overflight gives Finnair 🇫🇮 the “shortest route to Asia” which is quite literally their core biz/USP/their moneymaker/their everything.

bigger

This one was easy to predict. The government of Finland, which owns the majority of Finnair's stocks, has quite a loser in its hands:

Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn't mean you should hold every stock forever. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Anyone who held Finnair Oyj (HEL:FIA1S) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 95% in that time. And the share price decline continued over the last week, dropping some 6.4%.

It is funny how it is now 'unfair' that China's carriers are still allowed to fly over Russia. Who please introduced that unfairness?

Hint: It was not China or its airlines.

Here is a current British Airways flight from London to Hongkong. The route looks a bit curious doesn't it?

bigger

This is the ideal route between London and Hongkong. It is the route BA was flying before the British government put sanctions on Russian air carriers.

bigger

Yes. The higher price tags and longer flights are totally 'unfair'. On wonders who could change that?

Don't fear for that. The sanction nonsense won't stop anytime soon:

The United States is sounding out close allies about the possibility of imposing new sanctions on China if Beijing provides military support to Russia for its war in Ukraine, according to four U.S. officials and other sources.

The consultations, which are still at a preliminary stage, are intended to drum up support from a range of countries, especially those in the wealthy Group of 7 (G7), to coordinate support for any possible restrictions.
…
It was not clear what specific sanctions Washington will propose. The conversations have not been previously disclosed.
…
The Biden administration's initial steps to counter Chinese support for Russia have included informal outreach at the staff and diplomatic levels, including the Treasury Department, sources familiar with the matter said.

They said officials were laying the groundwork for potential action against Beijing with the core group of countries that were most supportive of sanctions imposed on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine a year ago.
…
China's role in the Russia-Ukraine war is expected to be among the topics when Biden meets with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the White House on Friday. Before that in New Delhi on Wednesday and Thursday, the war will be discussed by foreign ministers from dozens of countries, including Russia, China and the United States.
…
As part of a related diplomatic push, Washington won language in a Feb. 24 G7 statement to mark the war's first anniversary that called on "third-countries" to "cease providing material support to Russia's war, or face severe costs."
…
Among the challenges the United States faces in putting sanctions on China, the world's second-biggest economy, is its thorough integration in the major economies of Europe and Asia, complicating the talks. U.S. allies from Germany to South Korea are reticent to alienate China.

Anyway. We can be assured that Scholz and other dimwit 'leaders' will fall for this. They will ruin their countries before they dare to tell the U.S. to f*** off.

Let's hope that their voters will punish them for this.

sanctions….. when you’ve no taste for blockades!
contracts between parties are beneficial to both!!
the usa demanding eu stop trade that is beneficial presumes the eu can afford to give up what they profit from trade with russia.
presumption that just ain’t right!

I think you’re correct about Europe becoming a sullen, impoverished set of US vassals, obsessed with Russophobia. You can witness this in the Baltic states which are apparently ruled by Russophobes who view opposition to Russia as the top priority, above the welfare of their own people. Low birthrates and emigration diminish their future – which favors more Russophobia with the elderly left behind. Their inflation rates are much higher than Russia itself.
As for a long war by Europe, I don’t know. They won’t fight so that leaves Ukraine on the battlefield. The cold calculus no one wants to articulate is that the death of enough male Ukrainians prevents that war from going forward.

It is evident that the MoD is using hard data and a close razor, perhaps counting bodies and destroyed equipment from photographs, to create their daily reports.
My best guess, based on the daily reports and my sense of what is being pictured on Telegram/South Front/etc. is that in the MoD reporting mortars and wheeled low calibre weapons, their crews and support equipment are components of “artillery units”, but firearms of less than 75mm and mortars are not counted as “artillery pieces”. It is, however, my guess. It is far from “obvious” to me 🙂

It’s a sacred war, survival, the west has clearly stated that their objective is to dimember Russia and if the fall of the USSR meant so many wars and over twenty five million Russians that became foreigners overnight, imagine what it would be like the fall of the Russian Federation. For the USA war is something that happens over there, for Russians it is always at their doorstep.

True but somewhat misleading. We are the ones who created the need to fight the war by fully committing ourselves to it. We put our prestige on the line.

Thank you, b. That is beautifully presented, and I’ll go with Eighthman @ 66 who posited the explanation: ‘doubling down’. I’ll couple that with a statement used in the Solzhenitsyn novel ‘The First Circle’ by a zhek to the official in charge of his prison [paraphrasing]:
“Since I have nothing to lose, you have no power over me.”
The west had everything to lose, because they went to the casino, and had a bundle to play with. They took the reputation of those who had come before them, that was the bundle. ‘Oh, goodie; we can go far with this!” And they did.
They built a financial house of cards. But the bundle has been shrinking. (It was never theirs in the first place.) Shored it up by pushing pensions in the bundle so there would be more players – the middle class. That was the first double down.
And so it goes. But the rest of us — we have nothing to lose. We don’t play in the casino. And we’ve hung onto our bundles all the way down. And now they are doubling down on nothing.
It’s all they’ve got now, going in. And the bag is empty.
What used to be in their bundle and is still in ours?
Integrity.

For the West ?
Accelerated air-frame fatigue, hence use-able lifetime reduced, early air-frame replacement, higher total lifetime cost.
Higher fuel consumption re increased round-trip distance, at higher than previous cost pre SMO, plus ongoing inflation.
Extra crew-members re longer flights for crew changeovers, imposed stopovers, associated additional costs re accommodation, etc, customer inconvenience.
Increased rate & cost of servicing & maintenance.
Increased cost, reduced availability of parts, components & raw materials re sanctions blow-back, trade restrictions.
Increasing loss of market share & access.
Noncompetitive fare pricing & consequent reduction re quality/value of service as perceived by customer.
Longer, multi-hop hauls results in longer flight time. Undesirable. Inconvenient. Non-competitive.
Wider effect on US/EU economy & secondary MIC effects/consequences of un-competitive diminishing Airbus/Boeing duopoly going the way of ‘Detroit’ …
For RF/China & RoW ?
China & RF have already commenced replacement of Airbus/Boeing aircraft with 100% indigenous high efficiency lower production/purchase/operating/fuel cost designed/manufactured replacement aircraft, starting ~5 months ago for current short & medium haul passenger/cargo aircraft. Objective 100% indigenous within a decade & ongoing expansion re export sales/leasing and diminished Airbus/Boeing market share/sales/service/support. Subsequently, concurrent development of long-haul air-frames. Secondary benefit re adaption/customization re Military/Civilian variants, ie Cargo/EW/ISR/Airlift/Mediflight/Firefighting etc, including export sales/leasing.
Multiple multi-aspect benefits to RoW re access to latest gen, efficient, low purchase/operating/leasing/servicing cost commercial passenger/cargo aircraft from RF/China. Ie Iran, DPRK, BRICS+, SCO, everyone outside Empire ?
Expansive Industrial/Technology/Development/STEM benefits re complex high tech systems/components re large scale production/servicing/support, both indigenous & to RoW for RF/China ?
OTOH

That was engineer Bobynin. Fantastic book the First Circle, probably the best that Solzhenitsyn ever wrote, together with Cancer Ward. But overall he caused a lot of damage to Russia, and he realized it when he became an outcast in the west in spite of the great service his Archipielago meant in the bipolar struggle, his speech -I think it was at Harvard- did not please their hosts. Overall his figure will be greatly diminished after this war comes to some conclusion, he was a great writer but as the other great character in that novel, the linguist Rubin said, Soviet rule was despised by the ones that suffered it, like wounded animals, but not by the many millions who were inspired by it and were raised in social status, peasants and workers, the great majority.
A three chapter serial was made, with great actors, here you have that conversation, Bobynin with the interior minister. Love that book.

In Britain and in the rest of Europe there is an acute shortage of vegetables and fruit. British media blame bad weather in Spain for this https://metro.co.uk/2023/02/20/fruit-and-veg-shortage-may-last-weeks-as-storms-hit-spain-and-morocco-18315757/
A fruit and veg shortage on shop shelves across the UK could last weeks, as stormy weather disrupts the harvest at farms in Spain and north Africa.
Production of tomatoes, strawberries and peppers across the region has been hit by ‘difficult weather conditions’, the British Retail Consortium said.
It has led to ‘desolate’ fresh food sections in supermarkets in recent days.
And the situation is unlikely to improve soon, as snow storms, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms cause havoc on production.
*****************
But the Dutch ministry of agriculture has come forward with a completely different narrative https://www.agroberichtenbuitenland.nl/actueel/nieuws/2022/10/06/spain-fertilizer-prices-are-threatening-upcoming-harvests
Spain: Fertilizer prices are threatening upcoming harvests
“We talk a lot about automotive microchip shortage forgetting that fertilizers and seeds are the chips of agriculture and we need production autonomy, which we don’t have at the moment”. This is how the Agriculture minister summed up the current problem with fertilizers across Europe. Spanish farmers are living with uncertainty as they don’t know if they will have enough fertilizers for the next season.
The underlying problem is a slowdown in the manufacture of fertilizers, due to the high cost of gas on international markets, which has forced some plants involved in the production of this chemical input to close -temporarily for the time being. Of the several fertilizer factories in Spain (Fig. 1), only two seem to be producing at a low rate at the moment although there is no official confirmation from the companies.
Uncertainty in the primary sector
Fertilizer production in Europe has been reduced by 70% because of high gas prices – gas is both a raw material and a source of energy to manufacture them. Another important factor regarding Spain is that the country needs to import half of the fertilizers used by farmers.
In the primary sector, concerns about what will happen in the coming months are clear: “Last year there were already supply problems and, in some cases, it was not possible to make the crop fertilization at time”, a spokesman for the farmers’ organization COAG says. For the farmers’ organization UPA, “we are living in times of uncertainty because we don’t know what is going to happen”, its spokesperson adds in reference to both the cost of this input and its possible lack of stock on the market.
The sector speaks out
For the sectoral association ANFFE “the situation is particularly serious in the case of nitrogen fertilizers, as gas is their main raw material. In addition, the fertilizer industry is a high consumer of electricity and the sharp increase in its prices is well known”. According to its director, Paloma Pérez, “if measures are not taken in time, there could be very negative consequences both for the sector companies and for the entire value chain”.
Ms Pérez expressed her fear that “being such essential products for the agri-food sector, we will end up increasing our dependence on third countries”. For the moment, manufacturers hope that there will be no shortage of produce, at least in the coming months. “Our dependence on Russian fertilizers is less than that of other member states, such as Germany or Poland, as we receive imports from more than 17 countries”.
However, fertilizer prices will remain high because they depend on the international market situation and on production costs which have soared as a result of raw material increases and gas and electricity prices as well.

If I weren’t one of the types of people to be negatively impacted by it, be it in the form of the application of state power against non-conformists, or by reactionary mob violence, the reflexive insertion of right-wing culture war talking points by social conservatives would be kind of funny. What does this war have to do with transgender people, or homosexuals? Absolutely nothing, except that religious reactionaries in one of the involved countries are close to the reins of state power and use homophobia and transphobia to inculcate patriarchal and nationalist psychoses to get men to give up their bodies in the service of quite frankly retarded nationalist ideologies.
Onwards, Christian soldiers! I only hope one day you can all be martyred, and that our lowly, damned, profane world can finally be enjoyed with you passed, albeit perhaps in pieces, to the great hereafter.

It has probably escaped your notice but Britain is an island and UK is two islands. That requires any food imported from Italy, Spain or anywhere else in Europe to be trucked to a channel port and to queue for loading onto trains or ferries…………
Drivers are tied up in queues then ferry trips then congested roads in Britain………before the return trip over the chokepoint at Dover and delays ……….
Anyone tying up a truck for days to make a delivery to UK will demand much higher prices than for delivery into Frankfurt – if British supermarket chains refuse to accept those prices they get no product.
It is the same with eggs domestically and vegetables – supermarkets are price-givers and that is below production costs so suppliers are stopping planting or cropping. Milk is the same – price paid by retailers is below production cost – I think around 29 pence/litre.
It is nothing to do with weather and EVERYTHING to do with greed of retailers who are driving producers into bankruptcy

Thanks for expanding and making our view clearer. At the G-20 today, Lavrov opened with these words:
“We agree with New Delhi’s call to build a common future for humanity, which is especially important in the context of the growing geopolitical confrontation.” [My Emphasis]
You can bet his choice of those specific words was beyond deliberate as they are those of China and its call to humanity via its GSI proposal and BRI initiative. It’s exactly the opposite of the Collective West’s Narrative. Any further attempted illegal sanctions on China will kill what remains of the West’s economies. As for those sanctions–they’re illegal, so why obey them?

Oh yes, a long list of implications for Western airlines, none good.
Andrei Martyanov had a brief piece some time ago looking at the development of a new Russian medium-distance plane, an Ilyushin of some kind IIRC. He noted this was already 100% home-grown. I remember thinking that if they can get the whole-life running costs below that of Boeing/Airbus, the whole world will take notice.
Though the latter two companies are not above a bit of ‘creative financing’ when it comes to government officials and national flag-carriers…
Incidentally, on the subject of Airbus(BAe), I gather from inside sources that the A400M military transport project is a complete dogs breakfast, unlikely ever to meet its designed performance specifications, but still, a lucrative provider of overtime for the engineering staff charged with sorting it out.

The notion of expanding sanctions on China may be literal insanity on the part of the DC clowns in charge of US policy.
Trade data show that 2022 was the largest import deficit in history for the US. The US is utterly dependent on China for not only cheap goods, but also as the only real growth market for multinationals besides India.
Boeing has 100’s of orders on hold with Chinese airlines due to China being shrewd and refusing deliveries over the MAX debacle. That is just the tip of the iceberg. Boeing can forget about ever doing business in China again if this talk becomes reality.
Unlike Russia, China’s economy is too intertwined with the US for the sanctions to do anything other than explode in the face of the Wile E. Coyotes in the US state dept.

What’s the saying? You’re entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts?
RAND Report articulates *exactly* the purpose of sanctions.
And they *are* intended to harm Russia.
Europe is impacted by sanctions on Russia, as RAND identified.
But the whole game is Russia. Europe is economic “collateral damage”

“Extending Russia | Competing from Advantageous Ground”
https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR3063.html
“Key Findings
Russia’s weaknesses lie in the economic domains
* Russia’s greatest vulnerability, in any competition with the United States, is its economy, which is comparatively small and highly dependent on energy exports.
* The Russian leadership’s greatest anxiety stems from the stability and durability of the regime.

And the BRICS? It won’t be that much longer that they or SCO speak with a voice equal to or superior to the UN. They will represent enough of the world to do so.

Several BRICS members are in:
SCO – Shanghai Cooperation Organization

The SCO currently comprises eight Member States (China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), four Observer States interested in acceding to full membership (Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, and Mongolia) and six “Dialogue Partners” (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey). In 2021, the decision was made to start the accession process of Iran to the SCO as a full member, and Egypt, Qatar as well as Saudi Arabia became dialogue partners.
Updated: Iran is a full member as at September 15, 2022
[.]Another decision was also made to begin the process to include Bahrain, the Maldives, the UAE, Kuwait, and Myanmar as new dialogue partners during the Samarkand summit. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt signed MOUs and were granted the status of SCO dialogue partners, completing a process begun last year.

The cretin Borrell so high on hubris 3 weeks ago said: “Sanctions are like a slow-acting poison, like arsenic-based poisons: they take their time to work”. It’s not uncommon for the poisoner to become poisoned with his/her own poison especially when they’re careless. In this case the symptoms are manifesting themselves throughout Western societies that one needs to be blind not to see them. Russia clearly settled for a slow war of attrition which it has primed itself to carry on for years depleting Ukrainian manpower, Western weapon capacity and even economies. Meanwhile the EU parliament circus clowns (with some handful exceptions) and the un-elected EU commissars will need to search for ever dwindling funds to keep up the show until election time in mid 2024. And at some point, the countries reselling Russian oil and LNG to provision Europe will be taking note of the Western confiscations of Russian assets and demand to be paid in currencies other than euros and dollars.

I have no idea what you mean by “rule of law begins”. I would be delighted if we had that, rule of law and objectivity, instead of the radical progressive nightmare we have been thrown into. Post-truth society. Mainstream journalists writing articles how objectivism is dead and good riddance, journalist activism abandoning thruth for PR effect is the only way to fight these racist ableist patriacrhical (mostly) white scum. And dont get me started on what they define as “ whiteness” today. Your concept of race is way outdated. I wrote what one of the character traits of “whiteness” is for these morbid cultists: saving for a rainy day.
The same nightmare in which the likes of Biden, Blinken, von der Leyen or the dozens of progressives everywhere are the main protagonists. Not to mention academia where emotional instability and insanity has been institutionalised.
I am amazed by the voices at this board refusing to see what is happening in the public/government sector in the West today. How far have they went. Are you living under a rock? Some bubble maybe? I sense that maybe most of you “progressives” are of the old school liberal type which I proudly belong to. But this hellish modern version of class warfare against anyone able and epistemologically educated you fail to acknowledge.
As I said further above in the thread, class division is for the modern leftists (progressives) not understood as a consequence of inequalities in heritage, socio-economic class or power position but via the inequalities we are biologically born into and the moral codexes (constructs) our parents and environment imprinted on us while young. So the solution for them is to annihilate that forcefully through something they call “equity” (which is another name for kneeling at the altar of their choosing, whatever is in vogue that month) as a sort of emotional compensation in addition to the material one one gets through the generous social safety nets here in Europe. It is the only moral pillar of the church of the modern progressive. There is not one word about choice to be better, improvement, building character, fighting for your happiness or attention to the norms and values we have collectively build and filtered through 2000+ years of civilization. Like for example respecting physical reality, objectivity and the absolute in natural laws. No, we will go for post-truth and relativism as the epitome of modernity, the dot on the horizon we in the West should be fixated upon. The new enlightenment.
I myself am smack in the middle of governance and academia and have no strength left to defend objectivity and realism anymore. Its not worth it I think sometimes. Why would I divulge valuable objective knowledge I gained through years of hard study, work and sacrifices to those that do not value it but place trust in emotional experiences and herd dogma?

First thing Russia did after the “breakup” with the West last year this time, was to abandon the Bologna system. It tells us bookloads about how deep the cultural divide is that we find ourself into.
Not there there are no problems with racism. It is even systemic, I give that to the progressive cultists. Western whites do have a cosy relationship with supremacy. But the progressive idea to solve a complex problem such as racism is via blunt radical-authoritative tools i.e. forced equality, small annoying things like reality cast aside.
Why dont Western whites consumed by their guilt of colonial past go to China and Russia for help on how to deal with this? Instead ofmaking life a philosophical nihilist hell for everyone, including the RoW?

Why are European elites, governments, and governing bodies pressing these suicidal stands regarding the Ukraine war and Russia’s sanctioning? Here is why: The debt. Be it public or private. The governing EU entity that tries to deviate from the “chosenite”´s ukase will not be reelected and most probably be overthrown before the next election. The contracted credits of the whole country will not be renewed, its pension funds will melt and its currency evaluated. Chaos and social unrest will follow. Then, it’s better to stay on Kasher dietary regime, stay in power, however fragile, rely heavily on the repressive internal forces, and pray, in the meantime, for something “miraculous” to happen in Moscow.

In total, EU countries spent more than 65 billion euros on Zelensky, which is 12 times more than Ukraine’s military budget last year.

What’s the saying? You’re entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts?
RAND Report articulates *exactly* the purpose of sanctions.
And they *are* intended to harm Russia.

Imagine quoting RAND in attempt to prove your point and counter mine. I stand by comment and disagree with your opinion on the matter. Seems I disagree with RAND also.
Ask yourself who is suffering most from these sanctions? It’s certainly not Russia. Yet, despite this, the collective west keeps doubling down. I think we’re on round 10 of sanctions with no end in sight. Meanwhile, Russia is hardly effected by any of them. Western Europe, on the other hand, I had been to deindustrialise. Therefore, it seems clear (to me at least) the primary targets of the sanctions are Western European countries, not Russia as you contend.
The notion that the sanctions are designed to harm Russia is a lie. Just one more false narrative peddled to western audiences to justify their implementation. Western countries are hardly going to publish their true intentions (the deindustrialisation of Western Europe) on a policy paper, they?!
Zoom out more and you might start to see the bigger picture and understand what’s going on here. The agenda goes well beyond the Russia/Ukraine conflict. Think Net Zero, Agenda 2030 and the like.

Some thing has gone haywire in Ukraine .
Soros is reported to have funded sn indoctrination programme that convinced Ukranians to blame modern Russia for 20th century forced collectivisation of agriculture in Soviet times. This is such twisted thinking.
In Islam, only the Islamist terrorists claim qisas/ revenge can be perpetrated against the entire race of previous oppressors. None of the jurists of Islam have ever claimed Collective Punishment of an entire race is allowed. Race is merely a means of identifying provenance.
What this tells me is that the same divide and rule falsifications that Britain used to conquer India and Africa, are now trying to conquer Russia with divide and rule lies.

Re: The RAND report (or any of their output) there’s no reason that all of you can’t be correct. The sanctions can be used to hurt both Russia and industrial Europe. Whether they are more effective against one vs. the other is a matter that seems decided for now. The publicly stated reasoning for the sanctions is to damage the RF and specifically Putin’s government, but they also know (if not then, by now) that it’s EU business and citizens that will suffer most – at great gain to US businesses and citizens…for now.

Picking up here this morning, I had to check back to the top to see what thread I was on. Returning to the topic, then, the Financial Times has got this completely wrong.

European airlines are now worried that they’ll lose out on the wave of Chinese rebound travel, as Beijing reopens from years of COVID-era isolation. (Chinese tourism plummeted after the country required all international arrivals—including returning Chinese tourists—to spend weeks in quarantine.)

Quarantine had nothing to do with it. Many would have thankfully accepted it, if only they could have got back in. It was a crippling clampdown on cross border movement that froze air travel into and out of China. Chinese tourism abroad was halted. Incoming tourism stopped. Existing business visas were cancelled in March 2020, I had had a two year multiple entry. The only people allowed in for a long time after that were Chinese ID holders and foreigners with work/residence permits. It took me five months to get one and I was back in September 2020. (Incidentally my route back from Heathrow was Shanghai via Helsinki. I was the only foreigner on the flights, the rest all Chinese.)
I had previously used the Finnair run from Heathrow to Hong Kong several times, the switch at Helsinki was very efficient, the total flying time very little longer than BA and Virgin direct flights and the fare somewhat cheaper. Anyway as the article pointed out, western airlines have lost the battle and Chinese airlines will come to dominate the east-west routes. Hong Kong will be the loser too. On the local news a few days ago we were told that soon there will be direct flights from Shenzhen to the UK, that’s a first. If I were still commuting that would be my choice, but now resident in Asia, long haul flights mercifully are a thing of the past.

“… there’s no reason that all of you can’t be correct
In many exchanges I’d likely agree with you, as I am a “why not both” rather than a black-black-black V white-white-white thinker.
But Jax’s statement: the true purpose of Russian sanctions was never to harm Russia is simply 10,000% incorrect.
The purpose/intention of sanctions *was* always crafted specifically to harm (destroy) Russia.
Sure, to be effective in harming Russia, the sanctions must impact Europe and the EU as Russia’s main trading partner. The RAND Report acknowledges this.
Call it a two-birds-one-stone, a twofer-deal, a bonus-with-purchase, call it whatever.
But to make the call that the “true” purpose of the sanctions was to “never harm Russia”….. Is idiotic. And I’m calling it out.

1/ Banned. Hmm. As I’ve said previously. I haven’t found the bar owner particularly capricious. I’ve not seen comments from you that I would consider warrant banning.
2/ An addendum to the sanctions discussion.
That the sanctions are wrecking havoc across Europe and EU and impacting Russia to a significantly lesser extent (not negligible, but not devastating) derives from the lazy, bloated, “group-think” thinking @RAND and assorted “think” tanks.
We here are regularly regaled by those crying Putin shoulda taken Donbass in 2014.
He didn’t particularly want to. And, he couldn’t.
Russia took a big hit with the Crimea sanctions. At the time, removal from SWIFT was already mooted. The withdrawal of VISA and MasterCard was a big impact. And gave more than a glimpse of the chaos if Russia didn’t have an alternative to fall back on.
Putin/Russia then worked from 2014 to 2021 to place fenders around their economy.
The Smartest Guys in the Room at the think-tanks missed noticing.
Anyone who did say: “Hey, wait a minute.. Russia is adjusting and prepping…”got the “point-and-laugh” treatment.
The EU-NATO signed up to destroy Russia, because the US prospectus said Russia would collapse in about six weeks and certainly less than months.
The “short term pain, but fantastic long term gain” promise can be so seductive.
No one in EU-NATO was paying attention to the guardrails Russia was putting in place. Now they are paying for their hubris.
What we are seeing is the Stages of Grief: Denial, 🤬ANGER🤬and the slow slide to bargaining. Acceptance is probably a good decade/eternity away.
It’s taken ??200k?? Dead Ukrainian soldiers to get to the starting point that EU-NATO and the think-tank guys were so very wrong.
Sure, the sanctions are hurting EU, but the sanctions were conceived to target Russia.

Have you considered the possibility that sanctions were indeed intended to harm Russia, but the costs were to be borne by the EU and the profits to be showered on US MIC and energy giants. In the minds of US “analysts” a perfect combination. Everyone believed that Russian economy will not be able to survive sanctions for very long, and when that did not happen, the only explanation they could muster was that the sanctions were not hard enough. Hence doubling down.
This does not mean that your thesis is wrong, Western Europe had to be tied to NATO and the US and what better way than to engineer a conflict in which Russia was assigned the role of a bad guy. According to Michael Chossudovsky, similar thing happened in 1999. Apart from a desire to settle scores with Serbia, the US establishment needed to tie the Europeans to NATO and involve them in their intervention. Chossudovsky at the time claimed that the whole bombing campaign was actually a war on Western Europe.

More sanctions silliness: this piece https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/North-Africa-Is-Buying-Up-Russian-Diesel-After-EU-Ban.html suggests North African nations are buying refined oil products from Russia for re-export to Europe.
A couple of extracts:

African countries on the Mediterranean, as well as Turkey, had started taking in more Russian fuels even before the Western ban. Now signs are emerging that some of those products could be headed for re-export to Europe, analysts say. But they also note that even if this were the case, it’s difficult to ascertain the true origin of a cargo blended with other products.

~~~
According to analysts, those countries will not be consuming all the Russian oil products. North Africa isn’t boosting its refining processing, either. This leaves one plausible explanation for the jump in imports of Russian fuels—re-export to other countries, including Europe, after blending with products of non-Russian origin.
“Trust me, we are not witnessing some renaissance in Maghrebi refining,” Viktor Katona, a senior oil analyst with Kpler, told the Journal. A part of the Russian oil products will end up in Europe, according to Katona.
Yes raise a toast to racism, good job. It’s bad to be racist against colored people, but not whites. What a coincidence you happen to be right in line with what TPTB are openly preaching here in the USA and a person living here would be deaf dumb and blind not to see it.
@117 “What does this war have to do with transgender people, or homosexuals?”
Russian military states that they believe gay pride parades are CIA psyops. I for one am glad the Russians stepped in to stop these degenerates.
@ West of England Andy 98.
Most airlines lease their aircraft. The trick is to get maximum utilisation from the lease.
EASA are very strict on crew hours. I looked up (for example) London Tokyo. Before the closed airspace the flight time was 12 hours. Now it is approximately 14 hours 38 minutes. These flights are always double crewed and the extra hours must be playing hell with the scheduling. There is and has been for a while a worldwide shortage of suitable pilots for these aircraft (for too many reasons to go into here) but it started when the huge intake that arrived with the widespread introduction of wide-body aircraft in the 70s and 80s began retiring.
Another issue is, as the Airline lobby group IATA has recently pointed out, that an unlooked for outcome of the closure of Russian airspace to many carriers has been to force them into very congested corridors that overload ATC and place additional stress on aircrews.
The sanctions are hitting hard in Europe. BASF will be cutting another 2500 jobs, and shutting an ammonia plant (used for many industrial processes) Russia just cut its oil supply to Poland, so that will mean higher costs for Poland. Higher fuel costs are affecting greenhouse crops and supply.
It’s not just the sanctions that are hurting Europe, it is headed for another record breaking drought this year, with very low river levels affecting France’s nuclear power and the Rhine transport system.
The 200% USA tariff on aluminium will have costs affects. Meanwhile oil prices are steadily trending downwards so the price cap on Russian oil will have less effect.
A major lithium discovery in Iran has been reported, could make Iran almost as large a supplier as Chile. Not only will the west be barred from their oil but now lithium too!
Barflies I apologize for a chaotic post ( have many things to do, but can not resist regular updates from MoA with the morning coffee), thus writing in haste now ).
1) Sorry to see The hereSaker go, lots of useful info which has turned me into Rossia supporter since the coup in Kiev 2014th, I have learned so much, not to forget fantastic contributors.Sometimes even better than the host, never mind now.
2) The sanctions were not without the meaning, or thoughtless, or a result of incompetent fool leaders following the dictate of USA.They were the deliberate tools of destroying us, the populus.
The fact is the govts. of the so called west were willingly cooperating with the Davos, WEF, 2030 agenda of UN/WHO and their overall aims ( the switch to a totally new system after the globalization/other name for the global plunder when executed by the thief 5 eyes, has failed irretrievably, now they have to reinvent themselves, reset all of it). Includes depopulation, a massive one and razing the previous system to the grounds.
3) So much about this depopulation aim is visible now:
– EU and all of the west, to destroy the affordable energy sources, thus destroy the industry and living standard of the populus.They intend to address the east and all later ( we are tougher to brainwash).
– destroy the agriculture by killing the farms and decreasing fertilizers. Who controls the food…
– destroy the populations by injecting them with the genetic therapy (injecting them also with the perversions Weinmar-like on a societal level), while claiming it is the vaccine for an nonexistent pandemics ( WHO has changed the definition of the pandemic for this plan).
Norwegian was totally right in his answer to pretzellattack when he said that this is all like one coin with two sides, all is connected.
Thank you all and b.
Search for Jorge Vilches at The Saker archive, excellent series of articles on oil and gas sanctions of EU.
Lots of sublinks, usefull references
Just that he was wondering about incompetence of EU thus killing its industry, populace I disagree about the motive for the suicide. I dispute it is all deliberate.
I tried to post the link, but software does not allow.
Enjoy, excellent series of articles.
Maybe I was not clear enough.
I,ve observed the total cognitive dissonance in my community since 2019, and also between my international friends and my family far away. They were so ingrained within the believe system lie( We are your government and elect us because we wish you well and we will deliver), that they could not accept that the false govt they believed in, and elected? wished them evil.But it did.
As a result, I have lost many friends over the co..id bull…shit, even family. Now, they are dyeing.Massively, every week one is going here, after the booster.Massive death ( I am in Croatia), only in last weeks 4 people have died and I know they have been treated by the ,vaccine,.
Sorry, my last post today, 4 people dead suddenly in 3 months only in my little neighborhood of 12 units ( aware they have been boosted). The rest are having a lot of problems, clots, blue arms and legs, can not move around properly.Strange behavior. Like they are not themselves…
