Two flavors of peace that could come after this war : Genuine peace would mean that EU resumes buying Russian energy and reopening plants.
The other flavor of peace is second cold war, where open conflict is avoided but engagement is avoided, too.
If European leaders has hoped for real peace, they’d have responded to the sabotage of Nord Stream in very different way. Beyond culpabilities, they’d have focused on repairing the pipelines now, before being irreparably damaged. This is Berlin’s infrastructures, too, after all but as far as I know, no one hadn’t even heard a cost estimate for repairs. Nobody gave a fig and that would tell people would have the other kind of peace.
This is important because Beijing and New Delhi would have to make long-term strategic decisions. Moscow would want New Delhi to replace a lot of the merchant trade this lost with Europe. This would be a hugely ambitious project for New Delhi, as many of its firms aren’t focused on exports. New Delhi could only make this play if confident that Europe is out of Russia over a long period of time.
Beijing’s in a similar position but is trying to over leverage its play – Beijing would want Russia to buy its goods but wouldn’t want to build plants in Russia.

“”Big, big, promises. Too little to show for it. Now, the West is wondering if is it really worth going to war with Russia. They became more and more convinced that Russia means business. . . “”
The US/West reside in lala land. They want the nice things, cars, villas, boutique shops and for the chosen to get filthy rich. They can’t be bothered with mundane tasks like a functioning industrial sector or a capable military. In provoking Russia into a war they never considered whether they had the industrial capacity or weapons to enable Ukraine to drive the nail in Russia’s coffin, and they certainly weren’t about to confront Russia directly. So the victory of Ukraine was a fait accompli in their deluded little minds, and they never even considered what would happen if their strategy of sanctions and wonder weapons did not achieve the goal. It simply couldn’t happen to the great and wonderful West. It must come as quite a shock to many of them that shit’s getting real, except for the neocons, who think they will come out just fine after a nuclear war.

For all those warriors in their comfortable English armchairs fighting to the last Ukrainian.
‘It must be admitted that the English people are at present doing their utmost to justify the low estimate in which their rulers hold them; a people who for centuries have never heard a shot fired in anger upon their shores, yet who encourage their government in its campaign of robbery and murder against an unoffending nation; a people, who, secure in their own homes, permit their rulers to carry devastation and death into the homes of another people, assuredly deserve little respect no matter how loudly they may boast of their liberty-loving spirit.’

The EU hasn’t yet found $238 billion of the $300 billion in Russian foreign exchange funds that are allegedly “frozen” early last year.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-02-09/eu-urged-to-make-banks-report-size-of-frozen-russian-assets
People are wondering if Russia could repatriate some of that, but my guess is no. If Russia tried, the institution where the funds are located would refuse under the EU sanction. The reason the institutions haven’t reported those funds to the EU is probably because they are getting revenue off those funds somehow. I don’t know how that works, perhaps someone who has an actual clue could comment and explain it.

And if Russia wants to take over all the land until the Dnieper. That woukd take at least double the time. 3 years.

Wagner boss estimates how long Ukraine conflict will last
The hostilities between Moscow and Kiev might drag on for three more years, Yevgeny Prigozhin believes

RT

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine will likely continue for up to three more years, depending on the goals Moscow actually pursues in it, Wagner private military group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin has said. The businessman made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Semyon Pegov of the independent WarGonzo project on Friday.
“If we need to cover the DPR and LPR, then we need to work for at least another year and a half or two,” Prigozhin stated, referring to the territories of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, which were recently incorporated into Russia.
Should Russia seek to “go toward the Dnepr,” a major river separating Ukraine into roughly two halves, the conflict will last even longer and drag on for up to three more years, Prigozhin suggested. At the same time, the founder of the private military group noted that in any conflict, the destruction of the enemy’s army must be the priority, rather than a desire to seize territories from the adversary.[.]

Eighthman #6

I think there is one aspect to this war that has not received enough ( or any?) comment. It is the surprising effectiveness of Russian anti missile technology. Even if the numbers are exaggerated, it is remarkable to hear about every sort of projectile being knocked out of the sky.

I recall some months ago Martyanov made a brief mention of this extraordinary Russian achievement. He was brief and did not linger on the subject other than to surmise that the west would be sh!tting itself being faced with this defeat of their artillery.
I have noticed the Russian anti drone systems are equally effective and seem to have reached a high state of perfection with the recent versions of their ‘electronic rifles’ to bring them down.

This is obviously trolling, so not to be taken seriously. He has no clue what the Russian operational plan is and he’s politely informing Wargonzo of that fact.

P: Now back to your question, how long will it take. If we need to reach the Dnieper, about 3 years. If just Donbass, then about 1,5-2 more years of work. If we need to reach the English Channel, I have a plan for that, too.
P: But if we decide to go for the English Channel, we need to become like we were in 1941-1945, and, of course, we need to give the Ukrainians their fair share, maybe France, Italy, Bulgaria. Because we will suffer more than enough here with them.

Remember ten years of Goebbels sent the most educated, cultured country in Europe over a cliff.
And it´s turned England into a STASI state, with neighbours reporting neighbours for a visitor or not wearing a mask during the corona lockdown. Over the Ukraine war, press and TV are totally controlled by the 77th brigade (the English STASI).

FEBA is the furthest area controlled by the main force, FLOT the furthest extent of ALL friendly units, including covering and screening forces. The artificial terms really differentiate the extent the various units control their battle space and the boundaries they are responsible for. I’ve noticed the term ‘grey zone’ to describe the FLOT/FLET meeting engagements, but I don’t think the Russians would use such vague terms. It would be interesting to know, as language can often give valuable insights into SOP’s e.g. the concept of the Advanced Guard; which I think has been formalised into the BTG.

If Russia could time it exactly right to halt electricity supplies to railways when trains from Polandd are delivering tanks. .they would be a sitting target. So are they “practising” at the moment with their current attacks to discover what goes where?
I am not convinced that a token effort of later models of tank supplies will now go to the front line but will be held back nearer to Nato borders defensive line….maybe just enough into Ukraine (as a token effort of support) to retreat and hang on to some territory? I remember reading about a week ago there was a thought about to be a giant tank battle a la Kursk….but I think Ukr tanks will be stopped hefore that?

Is Ukraine a sovereign state under the Westphalian legal concept of sovereignty?
A crucial element in Westphalian sovereignty is the absence of a role of foreign agents in the internal structures of the state. The doctrinal requirements for a violation of sovereignty require either a territorial intrusion, the element of coercion, or the usurpation of an inherently governmental function. The Maidan coup of 2014 destroyed Ukrainian sovereignty. The issue is this. Was Ukraine a sovereign state prior to 24 February 2022? Clearly not.

I think there has to be some kind of showdown with the tanks (and possibly some planes). A token effort as you say. The West has talked itself into a corner. They may be regretting it already and all they can really do now is delay delivery.

The pledges of armour were never realistically designed to help Ukraine win back anything, like any strategy they had a number of purposes. Firstly, to placate the thuggish US regime who would punitively punish them if they did not publicly support Biden and Co’s chief money launderer. The ‘revealing’ of the Nordstream sabotage reminding them of the stakes at play and consequences for not ‘kissing the ring’. Secondly, to allow a narrative to build that the Russian offensive was launched prematurely, because of the imminent arrival of NATO’s armoured comeback tour, and as a result it was not as effective. Finally, to provide some sort of rump force, West of the Dneiper, in case Russia did not stop on the eastern bank. When I heard that Leopard 1’s were part of the deal and the UK was considering Typhoons, my initial suspicions were confirmed, this was not a serious reinforcement, just a PR gimmick and an admission Ukraine would be bifurcated by Russia.

FLOT, see previous post.
Formal doctrinal definitions in the US Armed Forces & NATO:

Forward Edge of the Battle Area (FEBA) (JP 1-02, NATO) – The foremost limits of a series of areas in which ground combat units are deployed, excluding the areas in which the covering or screening forces are operating, designated to coordinate fire support, the positioning of (MBA).) See: FMs 1-111, 6-20 series, 7-20, 7-30, 71-100, 71-123, 100-5, & 100-15.

&

Forward Line of Own Troops (FLOT) (JP 1-02) – A line which indicates the most forward positions of friendly forces in any kind of military operation at a specific time. The FLOT normally identifies the forward location of covering and screening forces. (Army) – The FLOT may be at, beyond, or short of the FEBA. An enemy FLOT indicates the forward most position of hostile forces. (See also line of contact (LC).) See: FMs 1-111, 6-20 series, 7-20, 7-30, 71-100, 71-123, 100-5, & 100-15.

Nobody takes Moldova seriously, not even Romania (which is supposed the big sister country), and for sure not Ukraine, or Russia. Moldova feels the evil eye from Zelensky:
Source: https://vz.ru/news/2023/2/10/1198759.html

“They removed the premiere, who was out of business, and put a law enforcer in her place. The siloviki will now organize repressions against the opposition,” Moldovan MP Bogdan Cirdea explained to the newspaper VZGLYAD. Earlier, Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita resigned. In her place, President Maia Sandu nominated the former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Security Council Secretary Dorin Rechan.
“It is already obvious that the “Zelensky document”, which was probably produced by the Ukrainian special services, lists the names of specific people, the names of parties, the editorial offices of the media. According to this list, everyone will be taken into custody. The organization of such political terror, apparently, will be engaged in the new prime minister’s siloviki. What for? And because Zelensky said so,” said Bogdan Cirdea, a member of the Moldovan parliament from the Party of Socialists.
The Western chancelleries came to the conclusion that Russia will soon launch an offensive on the Ukrainian front – and this greatly strained the State Department, the deputy says. “Therefore, we saw a sweep in Kyiv, starting from ministers and ending with the heads of regions. For the same reason, there is a change of government in Moldova,” explains Cirdea.
“As for Rechan’s past, he was the Minister of Internal Affairs – just at the time when the largest crimes took place in Moldova, such as the theft of a billion from the budget and the Laundromat, that is, the laundering of $ 22 billion through Moldovan banks, and other smaller scandals. Under him, corruption flourished in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and there are documents of the Accounts Chamber on this matter,” the deputy said. According to Ţîrdi, Rečan was personally a hero of scandals. Let’s say he was accused of having a fake college degree.
“Most recently, he worked as Sandu’s national security adviser, and last weekend he was appointed secretary of the Security Council. But recently, “leaks” of his correspondence with other presidential advisers appeared on the Web – it turned out that Rechan famously discusses the future arrest of Sandu’s political opponents, and also nicely discusses the purchase of “flour”. As many interpreted, we are talking about drugs, “the deputy is indignant.
“Apparently, Rechan will now be faced with such tasks: cleaning the political field from the center-left, from Eurasian and pro-Russian parties, banning the Shor party and our party, arresting opponents, starting with Igor Dodon and ending with the Shor and socialists. The third task for the future is to complete the modernization of the army, to prepare for military operations,” the source added.

Green Party MP Canan Bayram was cautious about the Hersh article, saying, “We can’t judge the veracity of the story.” She warned against rash judgments. Philipp Amthor (CDU) made particularly derogatory and defamatory comments about Seymour Hersh. He spoke of the “blog post” of an “85-year-old who received a journalism award 50 years ago.” AfD’s Tino Chrupalla said the government’s silence on the attacks “feeds rumors and conspiracy theories.”
Sevim Dagdelen of the Left Party said Hersh had made clear in his career the difference between journalism and government pronouncements. She told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, “It is appalling how U.S. reporter Seymour Hersh is being defamed for his research on the Nord Stream terrorist attacks and pressured to reveal his source. It is part of journalistic 101 to protect whistleblowers.” She called for an “international investigation under the auspices of the United Nations.” She said, “Despite Hersh’s revelations, the German government seems to continue to lack a real will to investigate.”
During the “Aktuelle Stunde,” Representative Jürgen Hardt of the CDU said he was proud that all the speakers in his parliamentary group were members of Atlantikbrücke e.V., because he could not recall that the Americans had ever done anything bad. Destroying a pipeline would have been unimaginable a few years ago, he said. He asked for the debate to be closed at just before 4 p.m. amid laughter from his group because he had to catch his train to Wuppertal.

Paul McGrory @133–
Yes, a very good point. IMO, the Outlaw US Empire/NATO is clearly managing the wa with Russia and Donbas going back to the 2014 coup. This TASS report is merely more evidence of that–Ukraine can attack wherever it wants. Note how the Empire refuses to acknowledge any vote that circumvents its “rules,” such as the one made by Donbas residents in 2014 to agree with Minsk that Zakharova reminded us of today. But as with NATO never moving an inch to the East, Minsk wasn’t to be abided by either. IMO, the RoW knows full well about the West’s chronic treaty breaking and backs Russia in this affair. Lavrov’s speech today confirms that.
Essentially, NATO/Outlaw US Empire invaded Ukraine via the 2014 coup and began waging a terror campaign against ethnic Russians living there using Nazis it had cultivated for decades. Once it became clear in 2021 that Zelensky defrauded Ukrainian voters and escalated the cultural genocide being waged on ethnic Russians and other minorities, Russia began to act by changing its policy dramatically, first by recognizing and announcing a genocide was occurring in Ukraine, then altering Russia’s laws to allow for the admittance of the Donbas Republics once they declared themselves independent, which allowed for the use of non-contract troops in the new territories. We shouldn’t forget Russia’s announcement that NATO nations had broken all three OSCE treaties regarding the indivisibility of security and asked for negotiations to arrive at a new agreement that would be binding in some manner. The request was denied as expected and thus Russia’s course was set by mid-January 2022. Putin met with Xi in Beijing in early February to make their Joint Declaration of 4 February that outlined their vision for a Multipolar World that entailed the defeat of the Outlaw US Empire and its vassals.
So, for those of us paying attention, it was clear that the military technical operation mentioned in December’s negotiation request would occur soon, likely before March, and it did on 24 February to the shock of the Outlaw US Empire/NATO. The response was as anticipated by Russia–illegal sanctions galore–which were parried very well thanks to the preparation provided in response to those that came before. Russia had long reduced its hydrocarbon exports component of its budget so it wouldn’t be vulnerable for that quadrant and has instead enjoyed the upper hand energy-wise. Militarily, Russia was properly prepared with vastly superior weapons and massive stocks of ammo. It erred in its judgment of manpower requirements primarily because it made a mistake as to who was actually running the war–it wasn’t Zelensky as presumed–so there was no quick negotiated ending. And here we are.

“Star Wars” was supposed to be a scam to exhaust the USSR. Did Russia eventually make it real? Maybe so.

Thanks for that. The Germans deserve what they are going to receive–“can’t remember the Americans doing anything bad” shows what kind of brain power and utter lack of memory is present–little and none. Perhaps Germany will disintegrate back to all those little principalities and cantons it was prior to Bismarck for that’s what they seem fit for in their current state. Crazy!

“We cannot allow Russian athletes to line up alongside Team GB and everyone else on the world stage.”
There’s an easy solution to that problem. The entire 85% of the world that knows exactly who’s causing the problem should dump the ‘Olympics’ permanently and start their own, complete with a world stage, and not invite the 15% at all. Then Russian athletes won’t have to line up alongside Russophobic assholes.

Former Acting US Defense Secretary: ‘Cut Military Spending’ by Half, Stop Hyping China Threat
“>https://sputniknews.com/20230210/former-acting-us-defense-secretary-cut-military-spending-by-half-stop-hyping-china-threat-1107332069.html

Former acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller has raised eyebrows by calling out the “military-industrial complex” by name, as well as urging policymakers to “dramatically” cut the Pentagon’s budget and to stop demonizing China.
“We have created an entire enterprise that focuses economically on creating crisis to justify outrageously high defense spending,” Miller lamented in an interview with CBS.
With the military-industrial complex having become a “hydra-headed monster” and with “virtually no brakes on the American war machine,” Miller told CBS that “you have to starve the beast to make people come out of their cubby holes and start thinking creatively.”
The former acting defense secretary has also condemned the frequent saber rattling that’s come to dominate popular American political discourse regarding the alleged military threat which US leaders claim emanates from China.
Miller argued that “by constantly harping on the fact that the Chinese are the greatest threat to America and what not,” Washington’s political class is giving China’s leadership the “opportunity” to “have an enemy that they can focus their people’s anger and attention on.”[.]
Miller calls to cut Defense Department spending by 40% to 50% so that it would be closer to pre-9/11 spending levels, given that the US is “no longer waging wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.[.]
“The more I thought, the more I was horrified,” Miller writes. “We invaded a sovereign nation, killed and maimed a lot of Iraqis, and lost some of the greatest American patriots to ever live — all for a goddamned lie.”
What “really bothers me,” Miller said in an interview with The Hill this week, is how “our young soldiers see the hypocrisy” in the system.[.]
And on the other side of the equation, “there’s the people who lose wars and end up advancing on to other positions of power and wealth,” Miller stated. “And that’s what really bugs me.”
[.]
But despite the raw emotions on display in the memoir, Miller doesn’t express much optimism that lawmakers in Washington will heed his call for a more reasonable Pentagon budget.
“There’s no incentive to reduce military spending,” he told the Hill. “I think there’s whispers, but [we need] someone with the courage and experience to get in there and force it.” (original emphasis)

Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee said he was “troubled” over the report. “I can’t immediately rule out the suggestion that the U.S. blew up Nord Stream,” Lee stated on Twitter. “I checked with a bunch of Senate colleagues. Among those I’ve asked, none were ever briefed on this. If it turns out to be true, we’ve got a huge problem.”

It appears that, thanks to Sy Hersh’s recent article, Republicans are smelling blood in the water, and it smells like the Nord Stream methane. Hersh noted that:
“This is not kiddie stuff,” the source said. If the attack were traceable to the United States, “It’s an act of war.”
Yes, an act of war against Germany and Russia, an act that was not discussed and approved by the US Congress. Joe Biden may have to explain this to Congress during an impeachment hearing.

You’re welcome. Quick and dirty machine translation but you get the idea. It’s Russia’s fault that US blew the Russian NS 1&2.
// Konstantin Kuhle of the FDP said that the perpetrators of the destruction of critical infrastructure in Europe are known: Russia is destroying infrastructure in Ukraine and is no longer even disguising its goal, which is the “destruction of Ukraine.” Kuhle went on to say that Russia is trying to corrode democracy in Europe by seeking “targeted contacts with advocates” in the institutions, “they sit on the margins,” Kuhle said, pointing to the left and AfD, and saying that we must protect ourselves from the “enemies of democracy in our house.” //

Update 133 – IAEA Director General Statement on Situation in Ukraine 25 Nov

[…]
Ukraine today also confirmed to the IAEA that the three other nuclear power plants – Rivne, South Ukraine, and Khmelnytskyy – had been re-connected to the grid and were operating to generate electricity for the country’s needs. Power had also been restored to the Chornobyl site, it said.
Separately today, Director General Grossi said the IAEA had completed a week-long nuclear safety and security expert mission to Chornobyl, including the Exclusion Zone set up around the plant following the 1986 accident. The mission will help pave the way for upgrades and improvements of the plant’s nuclear security systems. The IAEA experts also gained a better understanding of the plant’s safety and security needs and provided advice and guidance on radiation monitoring.
The IAEA announced earlier this month that it would soon send such missions to Chornobyl as well as to the Rivne, South Ukraine, and Khmelnytskyy sites, at Ukraine’s request.

The Russian news agency TASS publishes almost every evening a summary of the events of the day in and around Ukraine. I try to translate every summary possible, even if I can’t guarantee that I can do it every day, especially since the summary sometimes appears in the early evening, sometimes late at night.
Here I translate the summary of February 10.
Start of translation:
Infrastructure under attack, the EU is in no hurry to hand over planes to Kiev: The developments around Ukraine
Ukrainian media reported on Friday that energy infrastructure was damaged in several regions of the country. Power cuts have been made in several regions and train schedules are disrupted.
As a result of the EU summit, the heads of state and government of several European countries declared that Kiev should not expect the delivery of fighter jets “in the near future”.
The Prime Minister of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU, Ulf Kristersson, has set up a working group to create the legal conditions for the use of frozen Russian state funds to rebuild Ukraine.
TASS has compiled the most important developments around Ukraine.
Course of the operation
Russian troops have completely liberated the village of Dvurechnoye in the Kharkov region, Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov, the spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry, said.
According to Konashenkov, in the last 24 hours, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have lost over 410 people in attacks near Donetsk, Krasnolimansk, Kupyansk, Kherson and South Donetsk, and a large number of armored vehicles and artillery of the enemy have been destroyed.
A Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopter was shot down by warplanes in the Zaporizhia region.
Blows to infrastructure
On Friday, three air alerts were triggered in Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities and media reported explosions in Vinnitsa, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Zaporozhia, Ivanovo-Frankivsk, Kiev, Kryvyi Rog, Lvov, Kharkov and Khmelnytskyi. Ukrainian air defense activities were reported from the Kiev, Kirovograd, Mykolaev, Poltava and Kharkov regions.
Power generation facilities and high-voltage infrastructure were damaged in six Ukrainian regions, Energy Minister German Galushchenko said. Regional authorities reported damage to critical infrastructure facilities in Zaporozhia, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, Lvov and Khmelnytskyi regions.
Ukrenergo reported that there was a significant shortage of electricity in the country’s energy system and emergency shutdowns were carried out in some regions. Ukrzheldoroga has reported that train schedules are disrupted. In Kharkov, the interval of trains on all three metro lines was extended.
According to Prime Minister Denis Shmygal, Ukraine has now lost 44 percent of nuclear power generation, 75 percent of nuclear power plant capacity and 33 percent of combined heat and power plants.
The Sabotage of Nord Stream
The US has denied any involvement in blowing up the Nord Stream gas pipeline system and considers its explanations credible, according to US State Department spokesman Ned Price. He called “propaganda” the article by US journalist Seymour Hersh claiming that Washington was behind the sabotage.
The German government has no data to support Hersh’s conclusions about blowing up the Nord Streams, said Christiane Hofmann, a spokeswoman for the German government. She said “all relevant authorities, including the German attorney general, have investigated the incident very thoroughly.”
In response to a question from TASS, the publicist himself did not rule out the possibility of coming to Russia in the future and speaking in the Duma, “but that will not happen in the near future.” According to Hersh, “now is too delicate a time” to agree to foreign travel of this nature.
No aircraft for the time being
Under no circumstances will fighter jets be delivered to Kiev in the coming weeks, which is not a priority at the moment, French President Emmanuel Macron said after the EU summit, which was also attended by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
According to Hoffman, the issue of supplying fighter jets to Kiev was not discussed at the summit. In Germany, the topic is “not on the agenda,” said Defense Ministry spokesman Arne Kollatz.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for “coordination and unity” between allies after the summit after Ukraine requested fighter jets.
Ukraine has asked the Netherlands to supply F-16 fighter jets, Defense Minister Kaisa Ollongren said. According to her, it is a “very complicated matter”, so it must be said openly that a delivery is not possible in the foreseeable future.
Members of the Slovak National Council (Parliament) will discuss Ukraine’s request for the transfer of MiG-29 supersonic combat aircraft retired from the Slovak Air Force at an extraordinary session on February 14. According to the TASR news agency, the meeting was initiated by the parliamentary opposition, which described the provisional approval of acting Prime Minister Eduard Heger to the transfer of the aircraft as “unconstitutional”.
Difficulties with ammunition
The EU countries have not been able to agree on a proposal for the joint purchase of ammunition for Ukraine, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said after the EU summit. According to him, the proposal “did not meet with a positive response from some countries”.
According to the Hungarian newspaper Népszava, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer refused to supply weapons at the meeting with Zelensky in Brussels.
The deputy head of Ukraine’s presidential office, Igor Zhovkva, said in an interview with the agency Bloomberg that the country’s armed forces have a shortage of artillery ammunition. According to him, the Ukrainian Armed Forces need artillery, tanks, armored vehicles and long-range missiles to launch a counteroffensive.
Moving in real estate
Sweden, in its capacity as EU Council President, has launched an initiative to create the legal conditions for the use of frozen Russian state funds for the reconstruction of Ukraine, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said after the EU summit. According to him, the work will be led by the former Swedish ambassador to the EU and current head of the Foreign Trade Administration, Anders Anlid.
The working group, which will include “highly qualified lawyers with international legal expertise”, is expected to complete its work in the second quarter of this year.
Kristersson recalled that the EU has also frozen works of art, yachts, real estate and helicopters worth around €30 billion, although it is not yet clear whether these can be confiscated. “I think these are quite complicated things, let’s find out now where exactly the borders are,” the prime minister said.
Sport and politics
Britain will hold a “summit” on the issue of the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. According to the UK’s Department of Culture and Sport, about 30 nations are eligible to attend the event. According to Minister Lucy Fraser, London “cannot allow Russian athletes to stand on the world stage alongside the British team and representatives of other countries.”

In-depth Helmer article on the Hersh report’s assumptions and weak proofs.
http://johnhelmer.net/whats-wrong-with-the-hersh-report-on-the-nord-stream-attacks/
“Seymour Hersh’s report on President Joseph Biden’s decision to destroy the Nord Stream gas pipelines on the Baltic seabed on September 26, 2022, and the involvement of the US Navy in preparing the explosives, has been based on a single anonymous US source with what Hersh calls “direct knowledge of the process”.
From the full text of the Hersh report, it appears that neither the source nor Hersh has “direct knowledge” of the history of US-led operations to sabotage and destroy the pipelines which became public more than a year before; they directly involved the Polish government and the Danish government. In fact, by error of omission Hersh and his man are ignorant of those operations and of that history.
Also, the two of them are ignorant of the British government’s role in this history, and in the final destruction, which was revealed publicly by then-Prime Minister Elizabeth Truss to Secretary of State Antony Blinken sixty seconds after the detonation; and by the Russian government when it announced its knowledge of the British involvement.
The source and the reporter appear to be equally oblivious of the role German government officials played in the operation, and of the history of German warfighting operations against Russia stretching back to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s engagement in the NATO plan for military intervention in eastern Ukraine, following the shoot-down of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 on July 17, 2014. That attack was costlier in lives and in the US warfighting strategy against Russia than the Nord Stream operation.
In terms of cost, the US attack seizing more than $300 billion in Russian Central Bank reserves, announced on February 28, 2022, was much greater. Hersh implies, without identifying his source at all, that there were “US promises to minimize direct conflict with Russia”; that because the Nord Stream attack plan violated those “promises”, they were in the source’s opinion either illegal in US law, or violations of US intelligence and military operation standards, or breaches of international undertakings the US has given its NATO allies or its Russian targets. Without explanation, Hersh omitted to ask Russian officials or others with “direct knowledge of the process” to confirm these claims or deny them.
Hersh and his man dismiss the Germans with the same disdain. They report that “after some wobbling [Chancellor Olaf Scholtz] was now firmly on the American team” in January 2022, when the Nord Stream attack plan had already been under way, Hersh reports, for at least a month. Hersh omitted to ask any German source — active official, army general, navy admiral or retiree – to confirm or clarify.
Hersh’s text implies that he himself, like his source, think it’s good and lawful US policy to fight Russia’s “threat to western dominance [in Europe]”; to strike against Gazprom because it “is dominated by oligarchs known to be in the thrall of [President Vladimir] Putin”; because Nord Stream was “a vehicle for Vladimir Putin to weaponize natural gas for his political and territorial ambitions”; and because “American’s political fears [of Putin’s ambitions] were real: Putin would now have an additional and much-needed major source of income, and Germany and the rest of Western Europe would become addicted to low-cost natural gas supplied by Russia – while diminishing European reliance on America.”
If this is what Hersh and his man believe to be the truth, then what follows in their report is that one of them must be lying, one of them dissimulating.”

What puzzles and horrifies me is the utter passivity of Ukrainian males, going off to their deaths obediently, overall. Fighting to not be loaded into a van is pathetic, too little, too late. Impressment gangs that visit small villages should never be seen again, not grudingly complied with. Fragging should be common and automatic. Where’s the open rebellion? Another hundred, another thousand lost….. and nothing. Mercouris respectfully recoils at the phrase, ‘meat grinder’ but what empathy should we feel about this obsequious behavior as if the lives of fathers and husbands mean little – to themselves? Who’s the enemy – the Russian who calls for surrender or the Ukr. officer ordering suicide?

I read quotes from someone on the front lines last summer. He talked about the artillery disparity and he wanted out but felt that if he went back home he would have to go to prison (but I think he also risked being shot by Azov if caught). Apparently being imprisoned for deserting was worse than sitting in a trench to him. I recently read about a guy who was convicted of trying to get out of conscription and he was given three years in prison. Don’t know if he had connections or that is typical, but at this point 10 years in prison would beat dying in a Bakhmut ditch or cauldron.

it’s clever of the republicans to come out against the war and/or the expense, while the US takes over European industry. it soon won’t take any fancy accounting tricks to have Europe funding all or most of the (European theater of?) conflict being fought by vastly overpriced and overrated US military weapons. the war can go on, along with the delusion that there is opposition or division or even debate over war in the US, all while the US follows Tucker Carlson’s advice to prepare for war with China by invading Mexico. repressed fag man boys like Matt Gaetz get to sound tough while slobbering and drooling with penis envy all over the US war machine, Europe becomes more fully integrated into the US military and ramps up its war economy, while US gets to act tough by murdering and torturing migrants in the desert (w/lots of homegrown applause cuz we want the US to win sometimes!), while also worrying how to inflate the next Chinese balloon threat. so much win for the nazi death state thru all the controlled opposition. a nation raped in high school by the JROTC needs to be saved from the Russiagate QAnon threat, by the most frequent flyer of all on the Epstein express: Donald Trump.
sure, Gaetz and Boebert and co mark the turning of the tide. b/c they care about money.

John Marks @118
The British people paid in blood for the Jameson Raid and its aftermath, the Boer War. The profiteers were the crime clan which has its private headquarters in a City of London bank, where orders are passed on down to their wholly owned Bank of England and thenceforth to the various minions and acolytes. Gold and diamonds, yes indeed…and the winners of all that lucre are not even of longtime British ancestry.
Pity that.

Konstantin Kuhle of the FDP said that the perpetrators of the destruction of critical infrastructure in Europe are known: Russia is destroying infrastructure in Ukraine and is no longer even disguising its goal, which is the “destruction of Ukraine.” Kuhle went on to say that Russia is trying to corrode democracy in Europe by seeking “targeted contacts with advocates” in the institutions, “they sit on the margins,” Kuhle said, pointing to the left and AfD, and saying that we must protect ourselves from the “enemies of democracy in our house.” //

From the content of the discussion, it seems clear to me that the German leadership is scared shitless of the German public. At least some of the leadership, including the current German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and German President Frank-Walter
Steinmeier, were aware of Biden’s plans for the NS pipelines.
That is why Sebastian Fiedler (SPD) said the federal government should consider reestablishing a “protection commission.” A panel of scientists should continuously monitor threats and do so without publicity to better protect. Fiedler said with regard to the Nord Stream investigation, the public should not be told certain details so that the “enemies of democracy” would not learn those details either. He named the AfD as an enemy of democracy.
And why are they afraid of the AfD and the people in general, well because they say things like
Sevim Dagdelen of the Left Party did; …Hersh had made clear in his career the difference between journalism and government pronouncements.
You know, this kind of talk could catch on, and the current German leadership, being the “democrats” that they are, want to pass laws to keep it on the down low from the German public. Good luck with that.

“blasting the conversation wide open. It’s a delight watching the Official West succumb to the Streisand Effect.”
yep, the open and frank discussion of how necessary it is for the west to sabotage its enemies’ industry certainly blasts the conversation wide open to something or other.

End the endless wars….. there are rumblings on the Hill.
Are we witnessing War Fatigue?
CongressCritters getting nervous; having been briefed on the truth – the UKIES are losing, – there is this escalating aid of materiel with the likelihood US and Russia will be at war?
In 2002 CongressCritters relinquished their War Powers authority [power to declare war] granted in the Constitution when they passed the AUMF -“Authorization for the Use of Military Force” against Iraq, the use of which has been abused. Now there is a move to repeal the AUMF. House already voted to repeal.
Currently before the Senate for a vote to repeal. Senate Majority Leader Schumer’s statement in support:
February 9, 2023

[.]“The Iraq war has been over for more than a decade. Saddam Hussein is no longer around; his regime has long been removed.
“Every year we keep this authorization to use military force on the books is another chance for a future President to abuse or misuse it. War powers belong squarely in the hands of Congress, and that implies that we have a responsibility to prevent future presidents from hijacking this AUMF to bumble us into a new war. (emphasis added here)
“I’m glad that this effort has been bipartisan and bicameral. Americans are tired of endless wars in the Middle East.
“It’s past time to repeal the Iraq AUMF and formally bring to an end the war in Iraq.”[.]

sure. or have another little turrism incident and say goodbye to all that.
what would it matter if the AUMF were rescinded? they seek legal fig leaves but the absence of legal cover is no restraint. commit the act, and the cause will justify itself, in the right info and ideological environment.
sanctions against Syria are illegal. why doesn’t wall street’s little chuckie doll come out against those?

It is all about 2024 as near as I can tell. Specifically, keeping Trump and the deplorables away from the levers of power. I’m still waiting to see what they try to do, the Biden/Obama people, I don’t think they want to let the Pubbies back in.

I have a question for the bar. If it has already been asked, or already answered, I haven’t seen it.
Hersch states that the charges placed on the pipelines were detonated by a sonar buoy dropped from an airplane, that sent out a very specific and unique signal. What I want to know is, where is that sonar buoy now? Was it picked up by some traceable ship? Did it wash up on some shore somewhere? Is it still floating around somewhere in the sea?
If that sonar buoy could be located, it amounts to a “murder weapon” class of evidence. If it’s still sending out that unique signal, it amounts to a smoking gun backing up Hersch’s theory. If no one knows where it went, and no trace can be found of a ship suspiciously passing through the region it would have drifted to, then what happened to it?
I’m also wondering about the message “It’s done” sent by Truss within a minute of the explosion. That little fact was well known before Hersch’s article was posted, yet Hersch’s detailed explanation offers no explanation for that message. I have to wonder if his source set up Norway as the ‘fall guy’ in order to deflect attention away from Truss and UK.

@7 young “For now only one major road remains open in/out of Bakhmut.”
Since it still appears to be true that Zelensky is pushing more and more troops into Bakhmut it is an open question if the Russians really do want to cut that last road.
Think about it: they have created a big bag, and Zelensky seems to be insisting that the Ukrainian high command keep stuffing that bag full of Ukrainian soldiers.
The Russians must be dumbfounded but, really, as Napolean said: never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.
I’ve heard reports that since Zelensky is still doing this that the Russians have changed their plans and are beginning a much wider envelopment operation, since they see an opportunity to not only bag the Ukrainian troops inside Bahkmut but also all the logisitic/support forces that are feeding those troops into the maw.

What a lovely picture, two trolls having a discussion about a journalist that they couldn’t measure up to even if they climbed to the top of the tallest mountain on planet earth. Make me wonder what the CIA pays a mental midget of a troll to smear and defame the integrity of a journalist giant like Sy Hersh.
It appears the CIA and the Biden White House are frighted to death that Sy Hersh’s ” old story clumsily reported…” might grow legs and walk away. The question isn’t whether it is written to satisfy your high quality of writing, but rather whether it is the truth.

You are correct Dalit. Of course, an entity that could plan and carry out the Nord Stream sabotage operation wouldn’t forget a minor detail like THE SMOKING GUN, would it?
Remember that four countries carried out their own independent “investigations” and would not allow Russia to have a representative to be present as part of the “investigations.” Sounds like Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 “investigation” all over again.

Good job on that posting. Senator Mike Lee becomes the vanguard for the opposition as he’s representing a state which gives him a safe seat. This strikes me that the Utah Senator is indeed, as you describe it, demonstrating that the Republicans smell blood in the water.
Interesting part of this is that it is coming from the populist wing of the GOP, yeah, all those folks from the working classes who supported Trump, mainly because however smeared with goo that man is, like any astute politician, he sensed a great shifting amongst millions of Americans who were deserted by the Democrat party. In nearby Wyoming, almost unarguably the most independent-minded polity in the country, the Republican voters there massively showed up to kick Liz Cheney the hell outta office as the Congressional Gauleiter for the RINO wing of the traditionally imperialist and money greedy wing amongst the Republicans.
Democrats, faux liberals that they have become, will now be shitting their pants in the double-barreled outhouse, along with those RINOS. The imperialist overlay could be catching it in the shorts as more and more Republicans are now sniffing the political winds, sensing that methane odor of Nordstream that you pointed out.
Will be most interested to see whether there will be Democrats, representing essentially working-class districts, who will be tempted to jump ship and chime in with the fast developing populist revolt.
Its quite possible that the moneymongers, grifters and opportunists have gone a bridge too far in disrespecting the inherent power contained within the sinews of Mama Bear.
As a caveat, though, desperate times do occasionally stir up desperate measures on the part of the desperados. They may be experiencing wet-dreams about false-flag attacks…like a self-goal nuking of a middling large American city.
Would the mass-media of mindfuckering misinformation succeed in blaming it on Russia? They would do their damndest. Best outcome would be for military veterans dying slowly from the JAB, to go all postal and take it out on poorly guarded media-whores who keep spewing out such garbage.

i’m not sure what it means, but some of the yippie dippie yuppie stores have taken down their “i heart ukraine” signs from the storefront window displays.
it’s not a bad thing, not at all, i don’t spit on their windows any more, but these are people for whom political activism consists of putting up “love wins” signs in their yards. you know, the signs that popped up in suburban lawns, w/CCTV and more locks, when blacks started protesting police brutality.
“dear protestors: i’m righteous w/the cause. cf. attached ‘BLM’ yard sign.”
if only everyone put up signs and such displaying their causes, we might get some real change around here. for once. i feel inspired when someone drives by sporting a bumper sticker informing me their brats are spelling bee champions and honor roll students at the local elementary school. that could have been me that bumper sticker was about! only in America.

So with that “penis-envy” bit regarding Matt Gaetz, are you suggesting that he is circumcised? Not unlikely as most American males suffered the unkindest cut before they were even two days old and couldn’t even fight back. Neurotics, the bunch of them. Perhaps the dysfunctionality of many of those pro$titicians can be in part explained by their imposed neuroses.
Something to think about, even if the very thought of America’s dirty little secret is uncomfortable to consider.

I had the same epitome regarding Australia. After being locked out in covid, unable to fly home, then stopped as I didn’t have a Pfizer vaccine that was enough. It had been building watching the imbecile politicians try to pick a war with China on US orders. Now I look upon the whole woke deification of transgenders and the climate change idiocy shutting down all the power stations, and on and on, and just shake my head in pity. I’ll stay where I was locked out, it’s now their problem, I just don’t care anymore as most there support it.
