Ukraine – Pressing For Tanks

The German chancellor Olaf Schulz is under pressure from local coalition partners and external allies to allow the export of German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

Scholz so far rejects doing so because the U.S. is not willing to give its own tanks, M1 Abrams types, to Ukraine:

Germany won’t send or authorize the transfer of tanks to Ukraine until the U.S. agrees to give its own, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told American lawmakers on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on Wednesday.

The exchange in Davos, described by three people with knowledge of what was said, was respectful in tone but showed just how far apart Washington and Berlin are on a tank deal.

A spokesperson for Scholz didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. But the chancellor hinted at some kind of arrangement with the U.S. during his Davos address.

“We are never doing something just by ourselves, but together with others, especially the United States, which are very important in this common task to defend Ukrainian independence and sovereignty,” he said.

The U.S. has send its secretary of defense Lloyd Austin to Berlin to pressure Scholz into changing his mind:

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met his newly appointed German counterpart on Thursday for talks that have taken on more urgency since Berlin put conditions on tank deliveries to Ukraine.

In a call this week with President Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed that in order for Germany to unlock a package of Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine, Washington should send tanks, too, according to a German and a U.S. official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private conversation.

It’s a move Washington doesn’t want to make, citing the high fuel consumption and maintenance burden of the U.S. military’s M1 Abrams battle tanks. Austin is hoping to break the deadlock in Berlin and persuade Germany to send tanks, according to a senior U.S. defense official.

The excuse Washington gives for not delivering Abrams tanks is not really believable. Yes, the turbine driven Abrams is guzzling a bit more fuel than the Leopard’s diesel engine. But a turbine also requires less maintenance than a diesel engine which has many more moving parts.

Aside from the engine the Abrams do not have any significant parts that the Leopards do not have. Training for the use and maintenance of either does not differ in time needed or intensity.

There is also the false impression, pushed by some weapon dealers (in German), that there are ‘hundreds’ of Leopards available. This is nonsense. Not every Leopard is like the other. The most standardized variant is Leopard 2A4 one. In the end Ukraine could receive may be 50 of those. The current German standard tank is the Leopard 2A7 which had three upgrades since the A4 version came out. Various countries have versions in between, often with their own upgraded gun control and communication systems. It would not make any sense from a training and maintenance point to give Ukraine a smorgasbord of various Leopard types. The logistics to support those would immediately become unfeasible.

There are also other issues. Soviet era tanks have a weight of about 40 metric tons. All he ‘western’ Abrams, Leopard, British Challenger and French Leclerc main battle tanks have a battle weight in the 60 metric ton class. I doubt that Ukraine rural roads and bridges were constructed with such tanks in mind. What use is a tank when you can not move it around without destroying your own supply routes?

There is also the important issue of training. This does not only include the technology of the tank but its tactical use in the field. The Turkish experience in Syria showed that bad tank tactics inevitably lead to bad outcomes, no matter how good the tanks are.

Why is the U.S. rejecting to send Abrams of which it has hundreds readily deliverable in various depots and pre-positioning sites?

The German chancellor seems to think that the U.S. wants to sneak out of its commitment and responsibility for the coming defeat of Ukraine.

“The Germans were responsible for delivering tanks but they did not deliver quickly and not enough of them,” could become a convenient excuse when the neo-conservative Ukraine project fails as it inevitably will. The U.S. could thereby leave Europe on the hook for a dismembered and bankrupt Ukraine. That may happen anyway but it should not be made any easier by letting Germany be pushed into leading the escalation spiral in the U.S. proxy war with Russia.

Scholz should have thought of that when he, at the start of the war, committed his country to the Ukraine project. The consequences were easy to predict:

All energy consumption in the U.S. and EU will now come at a premium price. This will push the EU and the U.S. into a recession. As Russia will increase the prices for exports of goods in which it has market power – gas, oil, wheat, potassium, titanium, aluminum, palladium, neon etc – the rise in inflation all around the world will become significant.

‘Western’ central banks are still at practical 0% interest rates and will be reluctant to increase those as that will cause a deeper recession. This makes it likely that inflation in the ‘western’ world will increase at a higher rate than Russia’s.

The shunning of economic relations with Russia and China means that Germany and its newbie chancellor Olaf Scholz have fallen for the U.S. scheme of creating a new Cold War. Germany’s economy will now become one of its victims.

On February 4 Russia and China declared a multipolar world in which they are two partnering poles that will counter the American one. Russia’s move into the Ukraine is a demonstration of that.

It also shows that the U.S. is unwilling to give up its supremacist urges without a large fight. But while the U.S. over the last 20 years has spent its money to mess up the Middle East, Russia and China have used the time to prepare for the larger conflict. They have spent more brain time on the issue than the U.S. has.

The Europeans should have acknowledged that instead of helping the U.S. to keep up its self-image of a unipolar power.

It will take some time for the new economic realities to settle in. They will likely change the current view of Europe’s real strategic interests.

Now Germany and Scholz are in the mess I predicted at the start of the war. This will not get better by ‘taking responsibility’ for tank deliveries and letting the U.S. off the hook. Scholz needs to be able to point to the U.S. as the power behind the war when the final results come in. So let’s see how long his usual weak backbone will hold him straight.

The U.S is by the way working on further escalation steps in the war by planing new attacks on Crimea:

Now, the Biden administration is considering what would be one of its boldest moves yet, helping Ukraine to attack the peninsula that President Vladimir V. Putin views as an integral part of his quest to restore past Russian glory.

American officials are discussing with their Ukrainian counterparts the use of American-supplied weapons, from HIMARS rocket systems to Bradley fighting vehicles, to possibly target Mr. Putin’s hard-fought control over a land bridge that functions as a critical supply route connecting Crimea to Russia via the Russian-occupied cities of Melitopol and Mariupol.

However, President Biden is not yet ready to give Ukraine the long-range missile systems that Kyiv would need to attack Russian installations on the peninsula.

This week, top U.S. and Ukrainian commanders will hold a high-level planning meeting in Germany to game out the offensive planning, another senior U.S. official said. The drill, the official said, is meant to align Ukraine’s battle plans with the kinds of weapons and supplies NATO allies are contributing.

The U.S. is planning all major Ukrainian operations in the war. It checks what weapons are necessary to pursue those plans. It then orders its NATO clients to deliver the stuff or at least to pay some other country for doing it. When the operation  finally launches it will only be Ukrainian and Russia soldiers who will die in their efforts.

“What is not to like with this,” asks the White House.

Well, I do not think that Russia is willing to be the proverbial slowly boiling frog in this escalation game. It will, at some point, have to strike back at the powers behind the war instead of just at their Ukrainian proxy. I am sure that the Kremlin has already studied the various options to do so.

Russia is hoisting Pantsir on the top of Moscow’s buildings to signal its intentions to consider a possibility of a direct war with OTAN (I prefer this to NATO) a serious option. But the Empire of Lies will not put any air defence or missile defence atop New York or Washington skylines because:
1. So far the drugged American sheeple do not consider the Ukraine war as their existential threat; they will freak out if they learn that Pentagon considers them collateral damage in a nuclear war. Imagine the shrieking videos of 62 genders in YouTube, all demanding safe space to escape the coming nuclear war.
2. OTAN knows very well its air and missile defences are not going to work the way they are expected to. Why put them out, when it serves no purpose other than terrorising the American population?
As for the Russian offensive this winter, it may not materialise, it is half-way through the winter already; if Russia thinks it is disarming the OTAN by dragging this war, it must also understand that it is disarming itself in manpower. At some point, people will be tired of losing their young males in such numbers. Russian people should not be weary of war when the real confrontation with the OTAN materialises. Of course their immense grit and stubborn determination in defending their motherland is well known, but it should be invoked very rarely, once in a millennium may be.

If you mean abject failure as in didn’t halt the massive trade deficit, that is true as they were way too small to make up for a greater than 4 to 1 difference in wages. And they should have been decreasing-over-time quotas. But if you mean abject failure in that they screwed things up, that doesn’t appear to be the case. The Biden Administration quietly kept them.

I don’t doubt that Russia has the potential to win this war. Yet I don’t understand why they’re gathering a large force outside Ukraine and not using it. Ukraine’s economy is a mess; Russia can turn out the lights; Ukraine is short on heavy weapons and ammo; Ukraine has just suffered a major tactical reverse. But Russia seems to think that slow but steady wins the race. They better watch out in Luhansk – those big fortifications built there might be needed. More to the point, a major Russian victory could prove to Washington and Brussels that Ukraine regaining the 2013 borders is a pipe dream. As long as the “Zelensky Line” holds – even if it costs blood – the longer the West will hope that more aid will do the trick and lay Russia low. Everyone agrees that a few Leopards and Abrams will not change the war – but the Russians have yet to show that Russia can dominate the Ukrainian forces that lack the new toys. And does Russia have the skills and will to win? It appears that Wagner can advance – but who else? Russia’s basic war aim is to gain the Donets Basin and safeguard its Russian speaking population. A good place to start would be to clear the Donets Basin of Ukrainian forces. And not at a pace of a hundred yards a week.

I tend to agree – the ‘Donets Basin’ also includes most of Kharkov. Look at a map of river basins.
Just capturing/liberating the five southern oblasts could hardly be considered a successful or overwhelming military victory for Russia.
I’d suggest a minimum would be everything east of the Dnieper as well as Nicolaev & Odessa to link up with Transdnistria.
Anything less than that – what really was the point?
Not capturing Sumy/Chernihiv/Poltava/Kharkov would leave Russia just as vulnerable as before this conflict started – and one could legitimately ask how the conflict increased Russia’s security.
I sure hope that is part of the plan but I guess we will have some months to wait to find out on that front.

Thank you for that reference to the Pripet Marshes. I was totally unaware of that obstacle. However that narrow border strip between Ukraine and Poland is not too constrained and I guess a rapid southward advance could be accomplished and any garrisons sustained especially with Russian air dominance. The Belarus/Ukraine border has more rivers than an advancing armored column would welcome even outside of the Pripet Marshes.
However Ukraine is a mighty wet terrain mostly outside of high summer and not narrow tracked vehicle friendly at all. I suspect the USA does not want to exhibit Bradley failure in the swamp. Not good for sales.

The entire front is advancing gradually. The Wagner myth spinning is BS. The Wagner rely totally on the Russian artillery and air dominance as does the Russian army. The Wagner team would be destroyed if the Russian Army was not putting up a fight and advancing along the front and pinning down Uke forces and their mercenaries along the line. The immediate need is to shove the Ukes away from Donetsk and put a stop to shelling the Donbas cities and villages. Wagner team are mighty helpful in that zone. The Russian army is mighty helpful alongside Wagner there and elsewhere with no Wagner presence.
The pace of a hundred yards a week is fine while the Ukrainian soldiers are coming to you. It is they who have the stretched out logistics needs and the clapped out rail and energy system to contend with. Meanwhile Russia can rotate its force and still demilitarise, denazify, de sovietise the territorial gains. Russia is also drawing down a mighty arsenal of stashed soviet and western weaponry across the planet including EU, UK, South Korea, Israel, USA and so on.
All turned to ash in the crucible that Russia has constructed in Ukraine. That is one big pile of scrap metal and there happens to be a handy blast furnace and metal rolling plant at Mariupol just east of the front and served by a well maintained rail line and safe port. It will be be handy for a few years yet.
So think of it as a material handling exercise that unfortunately includes soldiers. There is no rush, this is war, the nazi government is cracking under the strain (no pun intended). The soon-to-be demilitarised are arriving every day.

What do europeans think about the liberation of ukraine.
Divided opinions:

While the Austrians and Germans favored a quick end to the war in Ukraine even at the cost of territorial lost for Ukraine, the Dutch, Portuguese and Polish heavily opposed this idea.
According to a recent Euroskopia poll, more than 60% of people in Austria and Germany want the war to end quickly. The result is interesting because the german government is among the ones that have provided more military aid to Ukraine.
In the Netherlands, 48% of the citizens opposed the idea of Ukraine giving up territories to end the war sooner. 45% of people in Portugal and 42% in Poland think the same.
An area in which opinions are less divided is the attention of refugees. 29% of europeans think that Poland is the country that has help the most.
The study was conducted in 9 large countries belonging to the European Union, on samples consisting of 1,000 adult citizens (9,000 interviews were conducted in total). The partners of the Euroskopia project are: Sigma Dos (Spain), SWG (Italy), Opinion Way (France), Insa-Consulere GmbH (Germany and Austria), Prorata (Greece), I&O Research (Netherlands), Pytagorica (Portugal).

Because such a thing can never work. There is a reason the Gold Standard was known as a ‘barbarous relic’. There’s a reason why silver coins died out in the first place.
The biggest issue, as ever, is where is the commodities are stored and how does they get moved around. It ends up being too slow to be of use in settlement. So you end up with an ‘inside money’ derivative moving around instead – an alleged claim over commodities. That derivative then gets hoarded by one entity to the detriment of all the others and we’re back to square one again.
Money is a promise written down, and always has been. Time to accept that. Just as we have to accept that we have to steer into a skid even though it ‘feels’ we should do the opposite.

I’m in France, for now. The protests here were far larger than the media wants you to know. The next big protest in Paris will be on 31 January – unions are organizing it. Should be bigger than the protests on the 19th. In Paris alone, more than a million people were protesting. Across France in total, the number was close to 2 million.
I was very pleased to see yellow-vests scattered among the protestors; enough so their presence couldn’t be ignored. Maybe one in fifty? One in a hundred?
The police were not brutal, but I must say that facing a phalanx of plastic shields and clubs, four-men deep, is intimidating … for this woman, anyway. Of course, in some areas of Paris, the less safe areas, young men were totally out of hand, I heard. I’m in centre-city – here, it was mostly peaceful.
Again, I’m glad to see others on this site watch for populist disaffection about the war. It’s not all armament and elitists spouting nonsense. In the end, war is about people.

Interviews of captured UAF soldiers

The Ukrainian army was armed and trained by NATO to take back the Donbas – they tried to form a NATO force with modern SOF warfare.
Russia just switched the game and forced them to fight a classical WW2 style high ammo game.
West run out of ammo.
And lost.
Interviews with soldiers told us:
They trained us to take it over with special forces tactics – now we sit in a trench and wait till the Russian wipe us out with artillery like in a bad WW2 or even WW1 movie.
When we fire one shell – they fire 8 or ten.
West was not prepared for that.
No high level ammo production.
No counterartillery in a right capacity.
Modern drones had no chance against RF AD.
And by waging a static defense game – because a lost mobility – the game was set.
The only successful actions were in the beginning – when AFU could play the game their way.
Small units attack RF thin lines of supply and communication.
And then the take back of Kharkov.
Well organized small highly trained units did what they have learned – and won a battle.
The war became static since then – and Russia was even forced to shorten the lines.
They retreated – in a very professional way out of northern Kherson.
Russia did what it could best – retreating when a fight is too costly.
And they did that very very well.
Then the war switched to a war of attrition.
And also that in favor of Russia.
But now the face of war will change again.
And soon you will see the results.

Exactly right, and the best litmus test of Russian resolve, or lack thereof. We’re long past the time where, objectively, Russia should have burned its bridges and openly committed to the unconditional subduing of the borderland. By now even mouthing the words “we still want to talk if anyone is sincere” is a measure of inner weakness.
I used to be ambivalent about how helpful it was that Roosevelt declared at Casablanca that the Allies would never stop short of Germany’s unconditional surrender. No more.
As for those who fear nuclear war, let it penetrate their thick skulls: The only thing which possibly still could deter the empire is the most firm proof of resolve, which means never saying another word to the imperial aggressor until its proxy is completely destroyed. Then we’ll see how tough these Euroscum are, and how willing they are to be next.

I was the one who emailed him about it, the “acerbic email” he referenced in his apology.

Voting at the World Bank and IMF is weighted by GDP. So the US ensures that “friendly” country GDP estimates are high and “unfriendlies” are lower.
The massive government spending and deficits in the USA, Canada, UK, EU, etc. all contribute to inflating their GDP. Fiscally conservative regimes are punished by this policy.
If there is ever a formal “Bretton Woods III”, this abuse also has to be addressed. For example, use GDP minus new government debt for each fiscal year.

1. Of course I don’t know of such nonsense. There are, or at least were, before being killed and then raped by Russians, plenty of ukraine speaking people in Donetsk.

It’s easy to understand German reluctance to become too involved in Ukraine. Most of the moderates in German government still remember a time not too long ago, when Berlin and the rest of Germany’s eastern half was Russian territory.
And the Russians never stopped reminding them that they’re still not even for 1940-45.
Victoria Nuland, an Under Secretary in the US State Department wrote that Putin waited to attack Ukraine until after the Bad Orange Man left the Oval office, because Biden was a “statesman” and would understand the politics of the SMO, whereas the Donald was a wild card and unpredictable.
That was probably true at the time, as no one really knew that the Sublime Brandon would turn out to be the disaster he is.
I wouldn’t doubt that Ivan is fully cognizant of the sea change in US military policy since Joe took over.
Given that neither Putin, nor the Stavka, fight their wars according the US policy or the opinions of the Mainstream Media, and that Putin DOES NOT mis-and-micro-manage his military command the way the current US regime does, I expect that, short of direct and overt intervention by NATO on the Ukrainian battlefield, I think that Ivan will be content to limit their SMO and let the US blunder its way around.
Let NATO send their equipment in and train the Ukies in NATO tactical doctrine. Russia has embraced the concept of Materials and Resource Planning and quickly feeds back what it learns on the battlefield to those who make the decisions and build the equipment.
Ivan has become very good at Improvise, Adapt, Evolve, Overcome. Whereas NATO and US Force Commands have had mission creep as a grand strategy for the past couple of years.
One thing about US military forces that I think the Russians grasp. And that is our military is only as good as our Commander in Chief. The troops respect and have faith in their President, their work is outstanding. They don’t respect them and their performance suffers.
Russia’s real fear is, at it’s core, the very same fear that the Warsaw pact obsessed over regarding the west. That is that NATO will blunder their way in, leaving no choice but for the US to directly involve themselves, mismanage the situation and then be faced with the very real prospect of losing to Ivan.
Because it isn’t Russia that ever used nuclear weapons in war.
And the US didn’t just do it once.
We did it twice.
