The Potsdam Declaration in 1945 set the terms of unconditional surrender for Japan at the end of WW2. The terms were occupation, disarmament of the military, demilitarisation, industry to be permitted except for those which could lead the country to rearm, the introduction of democracy and other factors which you can read on wiki. These same terms were also imposed on Germany. Signatories were Russia, US and Britain (Stalin, Roosevelt and Attlee).
So my question is how come Germany is building Leopard 2 tanks? I guess this is technically permitted as it’s not strictly to rearm Germany right? But they are being encouraged to supply them to Ukraine to fight Russia? For Germany to deliver german armaments for the purpose of war with Russia is precisely what the Declaration was designed to prevent. Surely the delivery of these tanks is against this Declaration? But the Potsdam Agreement (as later the Minsk Agreement ) were not respected by USUK.
In fact, they had already been buried in 1946.
First of all, it was more than a conference between the three powers represented, it was an agreement endorsed by the five countries that would become permanent members of the UN Security Council with veto power.

The most interesting thing about Lavrov’s visit to South Africa was not the swill that the NATO journalists (including the South African-born ones) spouted at the press conferences. The most interesting thing was that the South African Minister for International Relations and Cooperation (foreign affairs, that is) rolled back her earlier tentative support for NATO in Ukraine and flatly said that calling on Russia to withdraw from Ukraine was “infantile” because of the conditions there, particularly the way that NATO was flooding Ukraine with weapons. This caused a lot of South African journalists’ heads to explode (luckily they don’t need them to copy out their press releases). This is particularly interesting in the light of the pro-NATO stance of our current President, who is, however, extremely weak.
Another interesting thing is that China and Russia are holding naval exercises with South Africa. This is probably more PR than anything else for Russia, which has few strategic concerns in southern Africa, but it’s very significant for China because if they go to war with America they need to be able to control the sea routes round the Cape of Good Hope. The Americans must be hopping mad — in fact they recently warned that South Africa would soon lose its entire electricity network. I wonder if they know something?

IMO, the most likely scenario is that sometime in not too distant future, it will become unavoidably clear that, under a relentless assault of Russian forces, the Ukrainian armed forces will be in a state of collapse. Around this time I see a couple possibilities. Either (1) the US will create some excuse to send US, Romanian, and Polish troops into Western Ukraine, or (2) the US will give the green light to Poland to move into Galacia (and Poland certainly is eager to regain what it consider to be Polish territory by historical right). The neocons truly believe that the presence of US/NATO troops in Western Ukraine will cause Russia to “back down” rather than fight; they are dead wrong.
Poland is heavily committed in both these scenarios, plus all the weapons pouring into Ukraine are being routed through Poland, and perhaps that will lead Russia to hit Poland. But Russia is going to put the hammer down, and when it does, I expect it to fall not only on Polish troops but also on the Polish Aegis Ashore facility. I think if Russia takes out one facility, it will simultaneously take out the other.
And should the “coalition of the willing” — comprised of US, Polish, and Romanian troops (as described by Col. Douglas Macgregor) — make its way into western Ukraine, the hammer will also fall the Aegis Ashore facility in Romania.

Re Hungary – Yes, there are areas that are economically suppressed especially up around Miskolc. It has a very high percentage of Roma who refuse to work or go to school. Much has been done in Hungary, some of it exceptional meaning normal Hungarians can’t get it like free houses, etc., and their plight remains the same. It is very much like the inner-city black poor in many American cities like Baltimore or Philadelphia (or DC for that matter).
Hungary will not leave either NATO or the EU. They are enjoying messing with them. The EU has already refused Hungary most of the money it normally provides over Hungary’s resistance to the neoliberal policies and accusations of corruption. Here is a fact, corruption exists in every country. Yes, it exists in Hungary but from recent news, it looks like the EU leadership is even more corrupt. The Pfizer vaccine contracts are especially juicy and this seems true in nearly every western country.
Hungary has sensitive relationships with both Romania and Austria. There is no love lost between Austria and Hungary but they can help each other when it counts. Austria gets a lot of its energy from Hungary. Romania and Hungary are a big problem. Romania went all in with the US a long time ago and the Aegis ashore system built there is a direct threat to Russia. They also bought a shit ton of F-16’s a while back plus they have 3 US bases there. The 82nd is sitting there along with a rag-tag bunch of other NATO country’s forces. A lot of western stuff is going into Ukraine from there but there is one big bridge that has to be crossed and Russia has already hit it several times to reduce the flow. The isthmus is a tough place to mount an attack from but it is well situated to harass Crimea. Recently Zelensky signed over Snake Island to Romania although no one is dumb enough to put another base there. Romania is a poor country, a lot poorer than Hungary and Bulgaria which is saying a lot. They are all in for the US and I can’t see that changing.
The western military doctrine requires air dominance. The 82nd can’t move at all without helicopters as they are an air mobile Division. NATO will not have air dominance ever. The only way to defeat the Russian AD is to oversaturate the sky with targets. Russia has the best-layered AD system in the world but it isn’t infallible and has its limits. It is going to take a lot of S-400 systems to take out as many targets as possible at a distance of 400 km. What is left will have to deal with S-300s, Buk, and Pantsir (plus various local systems similar to the Gephardt). However, Russia has spent the last 40 years working on jamming systems most of which haven’t been revealed yet. The same for EMP weapons. So, as Putin said they haven’t even begun to fight yet.
I believe they knew the stakes from the beginning and began a massive re-armament beginning in 2008 and decided they were facing an existential attack since 2014. They couldn’t handle it then but could forecast what is required to take on all of NATO and have spent that time wisely. If they reached their target is anyone’s guess but it is important to note that 85% of Russian forces remain uncommitted and ready for war. The forces used in Ukraine has been local forces from Lugansk and Donetsk, Chechen National Guard, and Wagner PMC. Very little of the Russian army has been involved but is now on the battlefield. Ukraine should have taken the Minsk agreements as that was the best they will have ever gotten. Now they will lose the entire country except a rump state that may only be the city of Kiev (kind of like Luxembourg). They will be isolated inside Russian territory and they will have to beg for food.
The real question is whether some EU countries will toe the line. They already showed this several times and especially after the pipelines were blown up by the US. That was an act of war against Germany which took it in the face and bowed down in subjugation like the serfs they are. German industry has remained silent even though all of this will destroy their industry. So be it. Their best hope is Russia wins and kicks some serious ass. Their fallacy is believing they aren’t directly involved. At this point, all of NATO is directly involved and are combatants. Whether Russia decides to act or not depends on what the US does next.
Russia has converted most of its submarines to fire Caliber cruise missiles and several now have Kinzhals. All can carry nuclear weapons thus SLBM are no longer necessary. The Poseidon’s are already deployed and sitting wherever they are supposed to be ready to use. How many is anyone’s guess. The Sarmats are coming online and can easily avoid all (mostly useless) American anti-missile defense systems. The nuclear-powered cruise missiles all nuclear-tipped and having an indefinite range are now also online and can hit the US from any direction making the Northern DEW line useless. Really as regards the nuclear triad it is game-set match for Russia. But, IMHO this is all to be there to back up whenever they are really planning. I think they will hit targets with non-nuclear hypersonic which worked surprisingly well in Ukraine taking out a nuclear-hardened bunker 85 meters underground near Lviv. That day should have served as a warning of things to come to the US but the neo-cons keep chugging on.
Looking at Ukraine from a US operations perspective things are much more complicated. An attack on Russian defenses from which Russia is mountings its assaults puts the US/NATO not an offensive posture. To successfully mount an attack you must have a 3:1 superiority. Force multipliers can adjust this which includes artillery, stand-off weapons, and aviation assets. Russia currently (with the exception of the HIMARS and Russia has an equal system that the HIMARS was copied from) enjoys a range advantage and a plethora of standoff weapons and now the very cheap decoy and/or attack drones. The Penicillin that the west is making fun of is apparently very effective and impossible to locate as it has zero radiation energy as it is passive only and uses sound plus seismic sensors. Anyway, NATO cannot field a force large enough to be successful and will not enjoy air dominance. That only leaves NATO with a nuclear option. Because satellites now make assembly points easy to monitor Russia will know quite a while in advance whatever is being planned. There is no way to hide it nowadays. As others here have mentioned if Russia determines the west is truly going to attack they will start it first with a knockout attempt. It is anyone’s guess what that will be limited to. Russia has clearly stated this is an existential threat to their survival which to those who don’t understand what that means equals the death of Russia. They have also clearly stated that if there is a serious threat to the survival of Russia they will destroy everything. What western thinkers always fail to realize is Russia doesn’t make threats and doesn’t back down when faced with adversity. They will trade distance for time and will always try and conserve forces but eventually, they hit hard. Very hard.
My point is this was over before it began and an awful lot of lives could have been saved if the US wasn’t so aggressive. I predicted in February last year that ultimately the US will commit all its forces available to Europe leaving the Continental US unprotected. I didn’t predict that both the US and NATO would burn up all their disposable equipment and munitions by giving them to Ukraine. This only makes it easier. I also predicted that once the US moves its forces to Europe and commits itself then China will act on Taiwan and ultimately an invasion of the US. We will see if I am right. It all depends on just how stupid the US really is. If you look carefully at force structure the US has a 20:1 support-to-gunfighter ratio. Using that you end up with approx 85,000 actual soldiers in the entire US military. Russia also has a large support ratio but it is more like 5:1 as their systems are easier to maintain. with around 15,000 tanks in reserve, they can afford to abandon them if damaged and worry about repair later. They also can manufacture ammunition and missiles enough to keep this going for years.
Honestly, I don’t know what the US was thinking or if they even think at all. This debacle never had a chance in Hell in the first place.

Kraken is a brand of spiced rum and is very good, my favorite in fact. Kraken is also the name of the Seattle NHL team. And Kraken is also the name given to the giant squid sea monster; I have a T-shirt with one attacking a sailing ship of yore that’s very similar to the label on the Kraken Rum bottle. “Trump’s base” were never an incoherent disparate non-coalition of clusters.
Bannon was a genius for tapping into the collective unconscious of the anime-loving socially isolated disaffected, while also corralling the almost polar opposite, but similarly disaffected working Americans. HRC team had no clue there was 80 million of these, who she instinctively viewed as “deplorable”.
After losing in 2015 the DNC and “left” sociologists went hunting for “Trumps base”. The could not accept 80million Americans were dissatisfied with the Obama-isation of America.
Because Trump’s “base” is not actually a coherent group… all they could find were the red hats… and anime. So that’s what they attacked. People who’d bought a hat… and males who used anime to describe their world.
A real world increasingly half lived in a fantasy of gaming.

But Mark. That’s a brief answer as to why you subconsciously get “right wing” vibes from the anime Kraken character.

Wonder if the M1’s are the a1 variant that the USMC dumped, there’s over 400 after all. It seems more and more obvious that NATO is preparing for the next phase of the war, which is limiting Russia’s advances. In fact one could argue that 300 Western tanks is just a cynical move designed to end the war quickly by encouraging the Russians to launch their own offensive before the multi-cultural armoured circus arrives.

Now we have Baerbock, Habeck, Friedrich Merz (CDU, former chief of the German section of Blackrock) in the Bundestag, all of them extreme atlanticists. You would need somebody like Sarah Wagenknecht (die Linke), who is very popular in Germany, but completely lacks any power instinct that would be necessary for her to play a role.
Besides, if anybody came forward to implement your proposal – the US would not just make a racket about it – they would regime-change us, invade us if necessary – after they have already destroyed our pipelines. This war is not only against Russia, it is also against Germany. Scholz is well advised to hold on to those Leopards.
