Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

What In Zelenski’s “Epic Piece Of Theater” Was “Daring” And “Bold”?

"Daring"?

Zelensky’s Weapons Wish List Goes Mostly Unfulfilled on Trip to WashingtonNew York Times – Dec 22, 2022

After his daring 10-hour dash to the nation’s capital on Wednesday, Mr. Zelensky left with nearly $2 billion in new arms and equipment — as well as a likely commitment from Congress for nearly $50 billion in additional aid next year.

What please is "daring" in taking an armored car ride from Kiev to Poland to jump onto a U.S. military plane for a non-stop flight to Washington DC?

Likewise "bold":

Zelensky’s role on the Washington stage is Ukrainian fighterWashington Post – Dec 21, 2022

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s bold Wednesday visit to Washington is an epic piece of theater designed to motivate multiple audiences — in the United States, Europe, Russia and Ukraine itself. The message is simple: With its own bravery in battle and the world’s help, Ukraine will prevail.

Baloney.

Larry reminds us of a similar visit 65 years ago that looked great (vid) but had an unhappy ending:

By the time of the coup, there were 12,000 advisers in Vietnam, but those who knew Diem best feel that neither he nor Nhu would ever have invited or allowed 550,000 American soldiers to fight in their country, and to permit the devastation caused by air attacks, including bombing and defoliation. There is evidence that shortly before the coup took place—and for several months afterward—the first tentative efforts were initiated both by the Saigon Government and the National Liberation Front to come to some sort of accommodation.

The coup against Diem had of course been arranged by the U.S. government:

The Pentagon's, secret study of the Vietnam war discloses that President Kennedy knew and approved of plans for the military coup d'état that over threw President Ngo Dinh Diem in 1963.

“Our complicity in his overthrow heightened our responsibilities and our commitment” in Vietnam, the study finds.

Back in April, when Boris Johnson made it clear to Zelenski that the U.S. would not support any peace agreement with Russia, he may well have thought of Diem's fate. He decided to ditch the ongoing negotiations and to commit his country to the suicidal quest of beating the Russian army.

Accordingly Zelenski's "epic piece of theater" was "designed" to keep him alive and to fill his bank account plus those of the owners of the U.S. war industry.

Everything else be damned.

re the possible reindustrialization of the USA:
Do keep in mind that American corporations, if they’re compelled by circumstance to reindustrialize in the USA, would much prefer to do so without workers. Machines don’t unionize, after all.
That much said, I don’t anticipate any reindustrialization; the previously articulated reasons/problems all being valid.

Tom, you may recall, on Dec 13th I called Counterpunch rag of rags for printing Bolton’s wishful thinking, and promptly was attacked by the troll farm from Albania.
That’s how low the site has sunken. I don’t bother with them anymore. Used to have a few good articles. Don’t know what’s changed/taken over.

I derive much comfort from the fact that most of the worthwhile content on Counterpunch is borrowed from and available elsewhere. Otherwise we have Empire shilling, an economist who takes US government statistics seriously, an apostle of the Maitreya cult, a Music Appreesh prof, and a gender-nonconforming wannabe-anarchist. I’ll pass.

Heh, that is funny. Two observations. First, depression has a purpose. To preserve energy
when a situation is hopeless, for better times, where you actually can do something. If that
time never comes, still you are not worse off. Fight, flight, or play dead.
Second, I once had a boss. His (our business) was going nowhere, in fact slowly going down.
Then an employee came along with a stupid idea. Boss said to himself, well, we are going
down, I have to do something. This is an idea, this is my only hope.
Then we said, but boss, this is a stupid idea! He said, you got a better one? No, we don’t.
OK, then we do it.
Downhill accelerated a bit, rinse and repeat.. What did I learn? Nothing I didn’t know
before. What do I want to say? I guess I second your sentiment.
On a positive note, what did Warren Buffett say is the hardest thing to do as an investor
(and the most important): To do nothing!

“Moving in circles, you never quite know where you are. Living the future while living the past.”
A most interesting line of inquiry, this comparison of the Vietnam conflict and the current Ukraine proxy war, as it seems that the hegemon’s geo-strategic framework remains in a frozen historical steady state.
“Even the United States, which had hailed Diem as the “Churchill of the decade,” . . . ”

Compare with:
“Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Military Attire at the White House Draws Comparisons to Winston Churchill”
“Zelensky echoes Churchill as he tells Congress: We will never surrender”
Ect., ect.
And once again, for example:
“In the end, the Nixon administration’s implicit tolerance for corruption served as other elements of its policy toward Vietnam to maintain a short-term stability in the government at the expense of its long-term prospects. The fall of South Vietnam stemmed from a range of causes. But, among those closest to the events, corruption was considered the most damaging, “largely responsible for the ultimate collapse of South Vietnam.”

Compare with:
“There have also been a growing number of reports on Ukrainian corruption — a sensitive issue that many turned a blind eye to after the invasion. In addition to the CBS documentary, German newspaper Die Welt has published extracts from a biography on Zelenskyy detailing “corruption on an industrial scale” over offshore deals . . . . Though the US and Western allies remain firmly committed to supporting Ukraine, cracks are slowly starting to appear. With a new $1 billion aid package expected to be announced this week, the Biden administration will be facing heightened scrutiny as to where this money is going. Yet according to the now-deleted documentary, nobody knows. “There are like power lords, oligarchs, political players,” one NGO worker says. “The system itself, it’s like, ‘We are the armed forces of Ukraine. If security forces want it, well, the Americans gave it to us.’ It’s power games all day long”.”

By Israel’s surplus population, you mean the Palestinians? Maybe everybody hostile to the concept of Greater Israel between the Turkish border with Syria and Jerusalem.
It’s a bold idea, possibly conceived by his former hound Tkaia that all bones belong to me if I can get the US and UK dogs to pin down the butcher for a while.
Israel is a land without a people and we are a people without a land.

When on Tuesday the information leaked to the world press that Volodymyr Zelensky would fly to the United States to hold talks with the U.S. President in the White House and address Congress, it was a big surprise not only for journalists, but especially for Zelensky himself. In fact, the trip was not planned at all, nobody knew about it, not even Zelensky’s adviser Alexei Arestovich knew about the visit, which only shows that it was a completely unexpected emergency situation.
Something must have happened, and Zelensky had to go to Washington. But the US media is beginning to notice that something is wrong here. The unscheduled visit of the Ukrainian president has distorted all U.S. news channels, and now there is nothing else but Zelensky’s visit to the United States.
Suddenly, the media is not reporting on another issue that occupied most journalists until Monday. This is the FTX corruption case, whose head Samuel Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas on December 12 [1]. But on that Monday, December 19, something incredible happened.
FTX
Bankman-Fried finally agreed voluntarily [2] to his extradition to the United States in a Bahamas court, surprising many journalists and even his lawyers. The FTX chief was expected to resist extradition because he is a businessman in the Bahamas, where there is a high level of protection for businessmen from extradition abroad.
However, Bankman-Fried said he agreed to extradition to the U.S. and would testify because he does not feel he is guilty of willful embezzlement. And that means he will testify in U.S. courts about his contacts with the head of the U.S. Federal Securities Commission, Gary Gensler. I hope you understand what the American Deep State is now up against: that this little guy is going to start blowing the whistle on the big boys who talk to each other in Washington. So what now?
Zelensky saves the Deep State’s alibi in the FTX scandal … He now has the task of confirming the Democrats’ alibi that Ukraine actually received the money, that Ukraine bought weapons with it, and not tokens on the FTX. The hero in green from Ukraine is just to provide the corrupt members of the Deep State with an alibi so that Bankman-Fried’s testimony in court is no longer credible. In addition, it should be said that the Ukrainian president has confirmed that he received money from the US and used it for the war. …
If Zelensky personally comes to the U.S. and testifies before Congress about the financing of the Ukraine war, the Deep State will have an airtight alibi and Bankman-Fried’s allegations before a U.S. court will become implausible and worthless.
Young Samuel has gone mad and wants to testify in a U.S. court about what really happened with the Securities and Exchange Commission chief’s donations to Democrats. Who will the court believe? The young man who embezzled billions of dollars or the so-called hero and leader from Ukraine? …
The trip was made as a stopgap measure, as something completely out of the ordinary and unexpected.
The FTX investigation will lead to high-ranking members of the Deep State, and the Deep State needs Zelensky’s testimony that nothing Bankman-Fried says in court is true!
All this so Zelenskij can shake Biden’s hand and ask Congress in person for more money and guns, and not just via a Telebridge screen? No, that’s not why the trip was rushed.
Because the Deep State needed Zelensky this time more than Zelensky needed the Deep State, and for once. The Ukrainian leader had to personally present in Washington to the Deep State in Congress an incontestable alibi for the financial aid to his country, so that there is not even a shadow of a doubt about this aid, so that Zelensky confirms that all the money from the USA came to Ukraine and stayed there, and that it definitely did not go back to the members of the Deep State in the USA via FTX and tokens and through Bankman’s washing machine without accounting!
Circus at the White House, an act with a trained Zelenskij in a green outfit.
Meanwhile, one couldn’t help but notice that Joe Biden literally hugged Ukrainian Nazi No. 1, just as George W. Bush hugged Václav Havel in his time of unhappy memory. It’s a “pug” hug of sorts, and he gets a scratch for his loyal service. Only this time, Zelenskij is unaware of the thin ice he has walked on with the American masters. The FTX case will reveal many connections to members of the Deep State, and there is no guarantee that Zelenskij’s alibi will work …
Zelensky did not come to Washington to do business, but was brought there by Deep State leaders to illustrate their undisputed financial support for Ukraine.
The U.S. Patriot air defense systems apparently to be supplied by Germany to Ukraine are obsolete junk that could not even protect Saudi Aramco’s oil refineries from drone attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen in 2019 [4]. …
Kiev will again feel that it is getting great equipment, just as it thought it was when it received Javelin, which turned out to be the most unreliable anti-tank system of the entire war because the failure rate of the kits is so high that Kiev does not even ask for Javelin anymore. …
Young Samuel … proves his naivete, believing he can get away with telling the truth in court and letting the Deep State’s big boys talking to each other go down. But the hasty summoning of a narco-pug from Kiev to Washington confirms that the Deep State has gotten scared.

re thread title Can’t bear to watch/listen to zelensky or mainstream media. And since other channels have been banned I’ve been forced to find alternative information sources, which has been a good thing. I’ve become more critical and look for primary evidence -military weapons tech sites, asian and african sites etc. rather than accept the west-centric ‘news’. I check up mainstream to cross reference but not to get info. Hopefully many people do this, and are educating themselves. So, a bit like sanctions, banning ‘naughty’ websites has also backfired.
