This, from your superb summary you linked to, is the only possible explanation. In fact I remember Martyanov saying that the military war was (for all its prominence) a side issue and the key was the sanctions war. In fact any military move on Russia’s part would have triggered the “sanctions from hell”. Provoking Russian military action was the aim.
But only possible explanation or not, it’s only deduction. There are no documents or statements from Washington or London or Berlin that can be instanced as evidence. Just as, as far as I know, there are no documents on the Iraq war saying in terms “We’ll get the public believing in weapons of mass destruction and that’ll justify attacking Iraq”. In all such cases, Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, we can see at the time or later that the public was misled for the purpose of gaining public consent, but it can never be proved.
So it was clear in February, even to this “outsider”, that the PR put out by the Western politicians and media was a scam; but no way of proving that past doubt.
What can be proved past doubt are three things. That there was a build-up of formidable Ukrainian forces along the LoC. That there were many public statements from the Kiev extremists indicating an intention to subject the Donbass to ethnic cleansing – that shown to be more than idle threat by the atrocities that had occurred in the Donbass earlier. And that the shelling across the LoC had increased in intensity and came mainly from the Ukrainian side.
On that last, and crucial to the whole, that the shelling further increased in intensity even after the Russian recognition of the self-declared Republics. That recognition being clear indication that Russia had taken the Republics formally under its protection and also opening the way to an article 51 Russian intervention if necessary.
The date of that recognition is the key date. February 21st 2022. At any time up to that date a peaceful resolution by way of starting to implement Minsk 2 was possible. Ritter says the 23rd. Maybe, but I suspect by the 23rd the die was already cast. The key to the whole being something that did not happen. The shelling across the LoC did not stop. It increased. That was the West saying to Russia “To hell with you. Come out and fight”.
And the Russians did. They had no choice. Allowing the Kiev forces into the Donbass would have led to a military and humanitarian disaster.
I looked at the analyses of such as Lee and Kofman, and some others, of the days preceding February 21st. All showed that up to that date peace was possible, indeed expected. The Moscow Carnegie Institute put out a study showing that immediate implementation of Minsk 2, if only partial, was the expected way forward. None anticipated the Russian action. That was because none anticipated that the Russians would be put in a position in which they were forced to act.
Not long after I submitted a comment to an English site in which I somewhat melodramatically stated that “The world shifted on its axis” on February 21st. But it did, didn’t it? The military war in Ukraine was always a lost cause, and the sanctions war, inexorably, was to lead to Europe and maybe the entire West becoming no more than a backwater. One hell of date then, that, and comparable in significance only to the 28th July 1914.

Well, that’s true. I never discuss it with my friends in Germany, who are without exception convinced that Scholz was correct to act as he did even if the consequences are worrying. Seldom with friends in England. Polite incomprehension is all there is: the story of the war they’ve been told is now so firmly rooted. Looks as if we Europeans are going down without ever knowing why.
That’ll change, eventually. And I believe that ignoring all the geopolitical analysis that such as Mearsheimer excel in, and focusing on the specific events leading up to February 21st, and on the specific risk the Russians were forced to confront at that time, is how it’s going to change. Once the central point is grasped, that this was a Russian pre-emptive strike against a real and urgent danger, and that we were misled by our politicians and media on that central point, then examination of the rest follows automatically.

What do you mean the SPR doesnt have any heavy crude to make diesel, jet fuel and heating oi?
The SPR in Cushing, OK is loaded primarily with WTI (West Texas Intermediate). WTI is better than heavy oils. It takes less energy to crack the longer hydrocarbon chains and there is less sulfur and TAN in the oil. Heavy oils are better for heavy compounds like asphalt, bunker oil, etc, while lighter oils (above 30 API) are better for gasoline and distallates (diesel, jet fuel)

One thing we all should have learned in recent months is that drones are simple to build and very hard to defend against. US has been behind the ball, relying on cruise missile drones from the 80s. Better than that is not hard to do. Waiting for news on what size and type this one was. Used as onesies the plan would be survey the attack route carefully, fly very low, move at night over lightly populated areas – should work most of the time.
If Ukraine does have a supply of such drones and good mapping/targeting the only thing to do is go forthe head of the snake. Washington is seeking that sort of response. Still think they can win by making it a wider war.

For short range I don’t think it would be difficult to design a drone that could be deployed from a moving car (side window or sunroof), Russia is still open enough that intelligent young women can be assassinated so getting a drone into the country should be possible, one might even fly it across an isolated border area, then fly to and land at a convenient collection point, to be picked up and driven the rest of the way.

This war will be won by Russia. Next year is a crucial one and the USA is the key here. How they respond to Russias victory will determine wether we go to total war or not.

There are many possible implementations, some of which I have described.
The underlying system is envisaged to have a permanent identity linked to every user. This could be based on a ring-of-trust (See e.g. CACert for a functional system) verification of attributes, which may be arguably more secure than national ID systems (which are vulnerable to government manipulation), or it might be based on national identities, or it might be a completely independent system as long as it guarantees that each identity on the system is linked to one and only one person and that no person has more than one identity.
A good implementation in the USA might be to rely on rings-of-trust (with initial members adding, validating and being validated by friends and neighbors), and once sufficient influence is obtained, appointing the USPS, which is represented in practically every community of any size and was trusted to validate identities in order to issue passports, to produce and manage system identities.
An added benefit is that the Post Office has everyone’s address and can confirm addresses and identities quickly and cheaply. It would be easy to establish a self-managed system giving anyone an on-line presence, managed via their phone or a smart card. If people lost their identity they could easily recover it via a visit to the Post Office, who could work with the user to invalidate previous access codes and help them recover control of their own identity.
With secure identity established, people should be able to establish multiple pseudo identities on this system, which would be linked to their underlying identity, and used to store and validate various attributes, allowing the system to be used by schools, universities, companies, etc. to record affiliations, qualifications, experience, etc.
The pseudo identities might include their name or pseudonym, or might be completely anonymous. Pseudo identities would be trackable only to the extent determined by the user, and would be used by other systems to validate information.
The use of pseudo identities would prevent the challenges caused by compromised identity information. Use of appropriate cryptography can prevent access to user data unless explicitly shared by that user.
As a person’s names, nicknames and pen-names are attributes of their identity, they could choose to share some of this information with others, and the system would be able to validate the shared information, without disclosing the underlying identity.
For example, I might assert that I am “The Hermit” at a particular site, and others would be able to validate that I am the same Hermit as at other places and verify any qualifications I might choose to link to that identity, without being able to determine anything more about me. If however, the site-owner chose to block me, that block would apply to all accounts associated with my underlying identity, without disclosing the underlying identity or anything more about it, to the site owner or anyone else.
This means that I could create an identity, x, with which I might vote, and if there were conditions to voting, for example, age, affiliation or location, anyone could verify that the identity asserting as x meets the requirements to vote. By logging into the system, I would be able to validate that my vote had been correctly recorded, and could validate the voting totals. As this would be implemented as a one-way function, depending on the asserted identity and election, there would be no way that I could be forced to disclose my voting history, and no credible way to prove how I voted, eliminating many forms of fraud.
I addressed some of the attributes of such a system in my proposal On Voting and how aspects of such a system might be addressed in the face of government obstruction at Ways to hack an election (in a good way) both of which (and more) were shared with Republican, Democrat and Green party presidential candidates to zero effect, suggesting that none of them consider vote tampering to be an actual problem, or perhaps that all of them are aware of the fact that elections in the USA are fraudulent and participate voluntarily in the fraud.

(sigh) It is a short sentence with only 9 simple words: Someone Pretending or Feigning or Appearing as if they can’t understand it the first time defies belief, IMO.
I’ll repeat – “Enough of the false accusations and the personal attacks.”
This series of outbursts and abuse goes back to a comment I made to the group basically ‘wishing’ people would speak for them selves and not for others.

That comment is untrue. It defies reality. I wrote no script. The “MoA Block User Script has been shared on this site for years – posted here https://pastebin.com/k9ZL7hVS Apr 17th, 2020. I heard about when another posted the link here a couple of months ago after I started reading the forum. There is no bad intent conspiracy here. I promoted no malware.
Commenters, not matter who they are, should not be allowed to get away with outright lying about other commenters. That’s my values, yvmv.
