I truly enjoy Mercouris’ videos – his relaxed and cautious analysis. He does suffer from a lack of news flow of late so I fear he may need to cut back at some point but they are expecting more by January, I think.
The only quibble I have is I wish he would not appear so pleased when discussion Ukrainian losses.

Bejeezus. It is like he has no idea what trenches are actually for.
There is nothing – absolutely nothing – in the video that supports the claim that they are cold and/or sick.
They surely know that drone is there. They surely know it is going to drop a bomb on them.
Q: So wadda’ they gonna’ do?
A: They are going to huddle, and hope that the drone operator’s aim is slightly off.
But it gets worse:

Does he understand why they went to the trouble of digging out that ground in the first place?
What does he expect those soldiers to do?
Did he expect them to stand up and wave their arms about in a pointless gesture of annoyance at the bombs that are being dropped on them?
I…… honestly, words fail me.
David Axe is doing what David Axe always does: take the flimsiest of video evidence and then spin a ludicrous narrative of supposition piled high upon a rickety base of baseless assumption.

That BBC story on people eating pet food – as a cheapskate my reaction is its a load of nonsense, probably politically inspired.
I saw that on TG, move over Rover! That pet food story goes around an awful lot in hard times, been seeing it for 50ys now, it’s a bunch of shit. Pet foot isn’t cheap either, people love their pets more than themselves, that’s factored into pet food.
I’ve lived on €15/w from Lidl it can be done without resorting to dog food. There’s all sorts of crap human food in cans and boxes that costs less than dog food.
The question is why is the voice of the British State suddenly blazoning headlines about the proud British populace down on the floor eating dog food? Is the BBC trying to instill a riot?
Since nobody is actually eating dog food but eating chickpeas at 5 cans for a quid at Lidl, maybe the mind game is to get them to read the headline and think, “there but for the grace of God go I” and not riot?

I am now thoroughly confused: is it the huddling of Russian troops in shallow trenches and making no attempt to flee that is the sure sign of hypothermia, or is it the presence of dead Russian troops out in the open, demonstrably NOT huddling, that is the sure sign of hypothermia?
Apparently it is both.
Apparently a Russian soldier is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn’t.
Either way, it fits Zanon’s preconceived notions.

Our narratives are basically in line, but I disagree with you on whether the Russian Georgian operation was “ramshackle”. The Russian offensice suprised the West with how professional it was; modernization of the Russian military was already well-underway but was ramped up even more powerfully in the years sine. The Russian military performed extremely well in Syria where aviation assets were also employed, but the Russian effort in Ukraine has been nothing short of brilliant. In eight months Russia has managed to bring a once-modern nation to its knees and to essentially eliminate one of the largest and well-armed militaries in the world.
And has improved its currency value markedly regardless of the thieving spite of the west.

Ukrainians had every chance during the last 30 years. Only to prove to the world that they’re not meant to have an independent country of their own. It blows my mind time and time again how beyond stupid this country and its inhabitants are. And it can’t just be the fallout from Chernobyl, it must be something in the water there, I don’t know.
Watched a documentary last night on Golda Meir, the Israeli war-time prime minister. Learned that she was originally from Kiev. The worst experience of her lifetime that she recalled took place in that very same city. It was in her childhood days, when Kiev was part of Imperial Russia. It was the progroms by the locals against the local Jewish people. This got me interested, so I did some reading after watching the documentary. I learned that such progroms happened regularly. They happened in many places, but at the same time really restricted to a certain region within the Russian Empire. That region is nowadays the country of Ukraine. Ukrainians must have been pretty deranged even back then.

Yes, but why spare the females? By and large, they are just as disagreable as the males. Case in point: I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of the Berlin district of Schöneberg. If you haven’t, it’s very peculiar. It’s a very gay neighborhood, also bohemian, affluant, vibrant etc. When David Bowie lived in Berlin, he lived in Schöneberg – naturally. So did Christopher Isherwood and his pals during his Berlin years – naturally (the novel “Goodbye to Berlin” is basically set in Berlin-Schöneberg). To cut a long story short: it’s a place where any gay person will just blend in nicely with his/her surroundings. You can act as “gay” as you want, people will hardly notice, let alone confront you or insult you or harm you in any way. And everyone knows that, the locals as well as the tourists, and respects that. So you may understand how surprised I was to read this local news item yesterday: “Mann in Berlin-Schöneberg schwulenfeindlich angegriffen“. It translates as something like “Man victim of homophobic attack”. Apparently, a gay guy walks past some hotel, and three women start to insult him and hurl things at him from the window. Water bottles, shoes and stuff like that. I was really puzzled when I read this. A homophobic incident in Schöneberg is basically unheard of, and now one involving three women – aged 19, 36, and 39? How on earth? The news article doesn’t give much more information. But then it dawned on me after a while what nationality these fine specimens of females must have: they will be Ukrainian. Refugees of some sort, housed by the state in a hotel for the time being. I will bet you 50 € for each of these women that they are Ukrainian. The article doesn’t say (and neither does the police report online), but that’s just because both the government and state media in Berlin made a decision about half a year ago to scrap any mentioning of nationalities in police and media reports of any incident or crime. After all, it’s an old journalistic principle, right? The less information, the better. I don’t blame those women for their attitude about gay men. I blame them for being absolutely ignorant of their surroundings, daft beyond repair, and acting their attitude out in such a way.

Thank you for your statement on the size of Bakhmut. All the other places that we’re currently reading about, where Russia finally takes the offensive, are even smaller. I couldn’t even think of a place in the US to compare it with. Oshkosh, Wisconsin? An hour to circumnavigate, by tank? That’s the kind of “obstacle” to an attack we’re talking about here, in this Russian “offensive”. Now, back to the Russian frontline reports, “heavy losses for the enemy” – of 50 ragtag soldiers plus 2.5 IFVs, and a Javelin to share, bought on eBay.

My take on this whole situation is that since Russia is crushing it on the economic and diplomatic sides of the war, it is more than fine for them to mostly stalemate the military part of the war.
It is almost shocking to me that India is buying as much … of everything that Russia can send, in complete defiance of the US. We replaced an anti-US leader in Pakistan with one more favored by the US, and from what I can tell he is moving away from his original pro-US positions and more towards cooperating with Russia since he has taken over. Turkey is no longer a reliable partner for NATO, Iran is a reliable partner for Russia, Saudi Arabia and UAE have become Russian allies, Latin American nations snubbed President Biden at his Summit for the America’s, and diplomatic good news for Russia just keeps occurring. Russia’ diplomatic stature has remarkably improved.
Economically – well the Ruble is doing quite well, the EU and UK economies are NOT doing so well, and the US economy is sputtering along. Less of Russia’s trade is done in dollars and/or Euros.
Militarily – Russia has shorter supply lines, NATO has longer ones, and Ukraine has a lot more people to feed and heat. Getting Ukraine to take Kherson means that Ukraine has to provide needed resources for the people there.
I am thankful that President Putin has worked so hard to keep this from turning nuclear. I am amazed and in awe that he has been able to rack up so many successes with so many restrictions.

That sounds about right. There are still many noisy promises, money still flows through the laundromat, but looking at the inventory of the last batch of weapons US sent it is easy to see the arms flow has slowed to a trickle. That has to be showing on the battlefield now.

I’m not sure Russia is in any hurry at this point. So I doubt we’ll see a huge offensive in the next few weeks. What we are likely to see is a much more concentrated push. Russia’s primary issue throughout this is too few men to go with it’s overwhelming firepower. It’s hard to take and hold territory with BTGs.
There will be another round of energy strikes sometime this week. The psychological aspect of that is powerful. Witness how every time a plane takes off or looks like it’s being loaded Ukraine freaks out and gets ready for an air raid.
And then at some point a slow but overwhelming roll over the adopted oblasts. Not too fast because the slowness puts huge pressure on the western sponsors, depletes their resources and widens cracks between them. Slow allows troop rotations to counteract the difficulty of winter warfare. Slow retains the massive and growing firepower advantage. Slow keeps Zelensky able to maintain his “not one step back” strategy and the losses from it piling up. Slow has its escalation dangers but if Russia’s primary goal is to limit casualties, then slow has less danger than fast.

Ukraine finds itself in a similar position that faced the Confederacy in 1864 during the American Civil War. The North towered over the South in terms of manpower. Even though U.S. General Ulysses Grant’s forces suffered more casualties than the Southern forces led by Robert E. Lee during 1864, the North could easily replace its losses. The South could not. By April 1865, the South exhausted its ability to provide new recruits and reinforce depleted battalions and was compelled by necessity to surrender.
A similar fate awaits Ukraine. But this is not a repeat of the last year of the U.S. Civil War, where Union troops made repeated assaults on the entrenched Confederates. Russia, in contrast to the U.S. Army under Grant, is not suffering massive casualties and has barely tapped into its military reserves. Ukraine, by contrast, is exhausting its human resources and no longer can provide essential military training within its geographic boundaries.

I suspect the USS Kearsarge (LHD-5) of delivering the explosives to blow up the Nordstream pipelines. It is an amphibious dock ship that can deliver underwater vehicles and divers, e.g. a Seal Delivery Vehicle (SDV). The UK may have delivered the divers and the detonation time table.

I think the SMO is used both as a catalyst, and means of shaping the much larger hybrid war battlefield so looking at Ukraine from a purely military perspective won’t work.

Never corner a rat, and rather than eliminating a problem in the American way that causes many other problems to arise, the problem must be wound down to the point it is manageable but other problems do not arise.
Chechnya he separated the traditional Chechen’s from the CIA jihadists. Same in Syria, Russia separated the Syrian militias from the headchoppers. US seems to have learned its lessons in those two engagements so it may be more difficult to separate ordinary Ukrainians from nationalists/nazi’s.

They probably could have, but at risk of heavy casualties and time, which would have left their small peace keeping force very vulnerable.
ATGM, MANPAD and other portable but powerful modern weapons give small forces the ability to hold narrow passes against larger forces. Both Isreal and NATO provided the Georgian military with some modern equipment and training.

I suspect the USS Kearsarge (LHD-5) of delivering the explosives to blow up the Nordstream pipelines. It is an amphibious dock ship that can deliver underwater vehicles and divers, e.g. a Seal Delivery Vehicle (SDV). The UK may have delivered the divers and the detonation time table.

OT for this thread but germane to the overall war is what can be gleaned from Putin’s meeting today with “participants of the 2nd Congress of Young Scientists and participants in the Management Personnel Pool programme for science, technology and higher education at the Sirius Science and Art Park in Sochi.” The link is to the yet again incomplete English transcript that only contains Putin’s opening remarks, which is what I want to highlight. The Russian transcript and video are here.
Why is this so damned important? Well, we already know there’s the Hypersonic Gap which is due to the overall Scientific Intelligence Gap as represented by STEM numbers. IMO, Putin’s remarks reveal a great deal about what Russia and Russians are all about. And Putin’s message is heard by those much younger than today’s panel. And that’s one of the reasons’ why Russia will fulfill Putin’s Vow.
Overall, I think we have successfully created a very good education cluster for children at the former Olympic campus, but, as planned, we are taking further steps – we are creating laboratories of the highest level and class, world-class, without exaggeration, a university is already created. I hope that in the future, it will be possible to include production facilities here. Not as big as the Putilov plant of course, not here, but specific high-tech facilities can definitely be deployed. Then this will be a full-cycle cluster, from school to industry.
Fundamental research can be done here and applied research as well – everything can be done right here, and I think this is a good choice of a site.
But, of course, this is not the only reason. I think this congress is also a very popular event per se because young people always look to the future. That’s just because they are young and have their whole lives ahead of them. And young scientists are certainly planning careers in the fields they have chosen. This, in turn, means that when people like you get together, this gives the state the opportunity not only to listen to you, but also to draw the right conclusions, and this helps the state to become familiar with the priorities of promoting science, its development goals and objectives.
This is extremely important, because there is a range of goals to be met in this respect. One of them – perhaps the most important one – is the need to transition to a new level of technological development right away. I think that you have certainly talked about this among yourselves and will definitely talk about it here. The question arises: is this huge leap – you certainly know where this idea comes from – is it even possible in science? In our country, right now? I think that it is definitely possible, bearing in mind the fundamental research groundwork done by previous generations, and they did a lot.
Indeed, much was lost in the 1990s, when everything, including science, was falling apart and the education system was plagued with problems. However, our foundation in this was so strong that ruining everything was impossible.
The fact that you are meeting here, at Sirius, and discussing the future of science, shows that time and time again the very basic foundations of education and science in Russia are very strong. This leads us to believe that this leap, the ground-breaking transition to a new technological order is now possible in our country.
But nothing ever happens by itself. It is the people who make things happen. Young researchers are the people who we should pin our hopes on. This is what the state is doing, placing its hopes on you and people like you.
But in order for all that to happen – nothing can be done in the snap of a finger – all of society must set its mind to it, which is our second goal. Public authorities, agencies, public organisations and the public in general must make an effort to convince our society that sovereignty and the future of technological development, our technological, industrial, and even value-based sovereignty can rely on and can only come to pass on the basis of fundamental and applied science. Because – in fact, it has always been this way, and has now become particularly important and you know this better than anyone – this is what life is telling us to do, and the success of each individual, each country or country associations largely depend on scientific research performance, fundamental and applied research in all areas of life. And this goal is of paramount importance.
What do I mean when I say to “convince society, the state, and the public authorities?” This means it is imperative to encourage everyone to work in cooperation with you effectively, systematically and relentlessly. Without a doubt, if we proceed like this we will be successful.
We talk about research personnel training and training in general fairly often, if not always. I think, also at the initiative of your colleagues, we launched a project to educate research personnel last year. I think we have people in the audience who work in this area. It is a small number of about 85 people. This issue was discussed at a meeting with your colleagues last year, but it takes so long because the bureaucratic machine is so rusty – we launched this programme only in October. I think it is scheduled to last until May 2023. In fact, 85 people are not many, but not too few, either. It is just the first step.
But by and large, we certainly need to expand our work from local gatherings of company directors and their deputies to a systemic effort throughout the country. The Ministry of Education and Science, the Government as a whole and the regions will have to join this effort of course, including with your help – I also hope for it – to work out common approaches to training not just scientific researchers, but people who can do more than scientific research, who can also lead research teams.
Another urgent task is, of course, the integration of Russia’s new territories into the country’s scientific landscape and its educational environment. It is clear that those people who came and voted need to, as they say, take root in the Russian reality. And Russia needs most of all to gain a solid foothold there. This means more than attaining our military and political objectives there – it means working in those territories and with those people so that the people feel the benefit of the accession to Russia.
One of the heads of the new territories told me about families with children queuing for a medical check-up, a preventive examination, something that was probably never available in those territories before.
With all the difficulties, with all the tragic events, this is clearly a change for the better. But this is just one example; this must happen everywhere, so that this process becomes reliable, sustainable and successful. I have no doubts about its eventual success, but we need to ensure that it is tangible and achieved as quickly and thoroughly as possible.
This largely concludes my opening remarks. I would like to ask you to avoid turning our meeting into a Q&A session, especially because if you ask very specific questions, I will hardly be able to answer them fully, beautifully and interestingly. And I would just like to hear your opinion on what needs to be done, how you want it done, how soon, and what kind of support you need for your research activities, science and related education, of course, to make fast progress, as fast as we need it to grow and bring the necessary results to Russia.

1) The name of the country is Pridnestrovie or PMR for short. “Transnistria” is the fascist name the same way Auschwitz is for Oswiecim.
2) I live in PMR, so this isn’t some tabletop game for me. I assure you, the weapons depot is very real and very large (a whole complex).
3) It is located in a very tiny village (called Cobasna, various spellings) about 6km across the border from Ukraine. No one in PMR or working for Russia is going to blow it up ffs as it would kill a lot of innocent people.
4) There are enough explosives in the depot that it would be roughly 3x Hiroshima if it all went up at once. Hard to say what’s still ignitable though.
5) Everything, and I do mean everything, in that depot has been stored there (and not maintained at all) for 30-50 years in a NON-climate controlled environment. In other words, cooking in the summer and freezing in the winter. It’s impossible to say what’s salvageable in there, but it isn’t likely to be much. Much of it might blow up if it wasn’t moved carefully.
6) Roughly 800 soldiers of the Russian federation guard the depot (called OGRF). A couple of Ukrainian “probing” units tried firing on it with small arms during the summer, but nothing came of it.
7) Throughout the war, Ukraine has made multiple offers to “liberate” PMR, seize the weapons, and execute all the Russian soldiers and peacekeepers. What’s stopping them is that Moldova’s president and current PM are extremely pro-Ukraine and PMR is considered to be Moldovan territory. Therefore, Ukraine invading PMR would either be a) an int’l act of aggression (if Moldova gov’t doesn’t give permission) or b) considered an act of treason (if Moldova gov’t DOES give permission) and there’s be violent riots in the streets of Chisinau until somebody was hanging from a lamppost.
Hope this clears things up. There’s plenty of videos from Russian media (from before the war) where they tour the bunker complex etc if you’d like to “see it” for yourself.

I’ve been saying that Russia is the biggest or at least in top 3 sponsors of nazi terrorism too, though my reason might be different than Giyane’s: they’ve been paralyzed and not reacting to increasing nazi level in Ukr since 90s-20s, but also after 2014 coup when it started to be very public, with thousands marching on the streets and so on, they couldn’t care less. Even today nazi leaders are perfectly safe, the entire nazi government is safe and even nazi lovers from the entire Kiev/Lvov areas had no contact with war in almost a year. Only now, a few hours without electricity, like that will cause any problems.
What happened to captured azov nazis? There was no trial, some were released and I don’t doubt more will be released. Everything already forgotten. Russian gas still flows thru Ukr, billions in transit fees go to Zely and his nazis. Railways and highways are never bombed. Why is that? Abramovich or other rich guy didn’t allow it, for business reasons?

Nothing is certain but probabilities to avoid this are rapidly dwindling.

The position hasnt changed, sure. But you have to take into account that Western media is always used by Western govts to amplify events. You always have to ask: Why does Biden right now want to get the msg out that he wants to talk to Russia and Russia rejects it/ Biden’s terms? Why now? Does it have something to do with events on the battlefield, knowledge about shortage of ammo & manpower and how far Russian preprations for the coming offensive has advanced? My guess is the US is amplyfing the negotiation msg right now, because Ukraine’s position on the battlefield is desperate.

As noted beforehand, a ‘will to talk’ from US comes from pacifying EU’s concerns that somehow they feel that US is profiting from this war, and Europeans need jobs, too. But Russia doesn’t want to withdraw, is not into diplomacy and see, bad, bad Russians, so cruel…

Yes, I agree, and well spotted. I do not know where this Biden’s obfuscation comes from and why now.
Is it a face-saving desperate move or again a trial to find a reason to double down – I do not know.
I doubt that Biden or anyone around has created any conditions to superimpose any terms to Russia, however that indicates that NATO/US has multiple top masters running each its own agenda and having conflicting interests in general. West is far from being united, in reality. Failing Western coalition is a dangerous beast.

The battle for Bakhmut is frustrating but there may be a certain design to it. Hold back the encirclement for as long as Ukr. reinforcements are sent in. Atm Friday midday…there are about seven warships parked not to mention about four being repaired
The warships are a mixture of swedish/dutch/german and english.
From my experience of watching I can tell that these have arrived for the weekend.
And will leave possibly high-tide monday.
Obviously not much is really active circa NATO/Russia.
In the past I saw the port empty-out totally for about ten days.
I was then a little bit nervous about the stupid UK knts in-charge having issued suicide orders

Ukraine’s electric grid is slowly being destroyed, the EU is economically becoming deindustrialized and headed for a financial crisis, the Ruble is stronger than before the war, the Russian economy has been growing since September, while the EU and US are economically contracting, the non-Western world is slowly de-dollarizing and using regional currencies.
This will go on for another couple of years: the Ukraine and EU will be ground down to dust. Nobody will think of the EU as providing economic prosperity, nobody will see NATO as “keeping the peace in Europe”.
The only way out for the EU is to give in to Russia’s demands. The alternative is the slow but sure destruction of Europe. It has a choice between accommodating Russia, or returning to the Middle Ages, with Vikings roaming around, preying on malnourished peasants.
