‘Minsk II Was Agreed On To Arm Ukraine’ – Did Merkel Really Say That?

Helmholtz Smith, Andrew Korybko and Andrei Martyanov have some thoughts about a recent interview the former German chancellor Angela Merkel gave to the German weekly broadsheet Die Zeit.

Smith says it shows that the 'West' is not trustworthy. Korybko thinks the interview will prolong the conflict in Ukraine. Martyanov says that Merkel is stupid. She isn't.

In the interview Merkel seems to claim that the Minsk agreements between the Ukrainian government and the Donbas region, which she negotiated and co-signed as guarantor, was never meant to be fulfilled. It was only meant to give time to build up the Ukrainian military.

I however think that such an interpretation is wrong. Merkel is under very harsh critique not only in the U.S. but also in her own conservative party. She is now out to justify her previous decisions as well as the current bad outcome in Ukraine. My hunch is that she is making things up. Unfortunately she also creates serious damage.

The relevant passage of the interview is longer than the one paragraph Helmholtz Smith and other cite. The context is important. Here is my translation of it:

ZEIT: Do you ask yourself if the years of relative calm were also years of omissions and if you were not only a crisis manager, but also partly the cause of crises?

Merkel: I would not be a political person if I did not deal with that. […some stuff about climate action …] Let us look at my policy towards Russia and Ukraine. I come to the conclusion that I made the decisions I made back then in a way that I can understand today. It was an attempt to prevent just such a war. The fact that this was not successful does not mean that the attempts were wrong.

I think the above is genuine. The Minsk agreements were a serious attempt to prevent war by reintegrating Donbas into a federalized Ukraine.

However, the Ukrainian president Poroshenko did not have the will and the political backing to fulfill the agreement. There was no chance that, under him, a federalization law would pass the Ukrainian parliament. Moreover the U.S., the only party who could have really pressured him, told him not to follow up on the agreement. But then came Zelensky who was elected by a large majority on the promise to fulfill Minsk II. He even made attempts to do that. But he soon found out that his own life was in serious danger if he continued to try. There was also U.S. pressure as it which did not want Minsk fulfilled. Merkel however can not say that out loud. By late 2019 she must have recognized that Minsk II was blocked forever. It was a serious defeat for her but there was nothing she could do about it.

She therefore now comes up, ex post, with a Chamberlain excuse. The 1938 Munich agreement Chamberlain signed prevented Germany from immediately going to war and gave the UK and others time to arm up. The Minsk agreement, Merkel claims now, bought time for Ukraine to get its military into better conditions:

ZEIT: But one can still find it plausible how one acted in earlier circumstances and today, in view of the results, consider it wrong.

Merkel: But that also requires you to say what exactly the alternatives were at the time. I thought the initiation of NATO accession for Ukraine and Georgia discussed in 2008 was wrong. The countries neither had the necessary prerequisites for this, nor had the consequences of such a decision been fully considered, both with regard to Russia's actions against Georgia and Ukraine and to NATO and its rules of assistance. And the 2014 Minsk agreement was an attempt to give Ukraine time.

(ZEIT Editor Note: The Minsk Agreement is a set of agreements for the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, which under Russian influence broke away from Ukraine . The aim was to gain time with a ceasefire in order to later come to a peace between Russia and Ukraine.)

It also used this time to get stronger, as you can see today. The Ukraine of 2014/15 is not the Ukraine of today. As you saw in the battle for Debaltseve (railway town in Donbass, Donetsk Oblast, ed.) in early 2015, Putin could easily have overrun them at the time. And I very much doubt that the NATO countries could have done as much then as they do now to help Ukraine.

ZEIT: In your first public appearance after the end of your chancellorship, you said that you had already recognized in 2007 how Putin thinks about Europe and that the only language he understands is harshness. If this realization came so early, why did you pursue an energy policy that made us so dependent on Russia?

Merkel: It was clear to all of us that the conflict was frozen, that the problem had not been solved, but that gave Ukraine valuable time. Of course, one can now ask the question: Why was the construction of Nord Stream 2 still approved in such a situation?

ZEIT: Yes, why? Especially since there was already very strong criticism of the construction of the pipeline at that time, for example from Poland and the USA.

Merkel: Yes, one could come to different opinions. What was it about? On the one hand, Ukraine attached great importance to remaining a transit country for Russian gas. It wanted to channel gas through her territory and not through the Baltic Sea. Today people sometimes act as if every Russian gas molecule was from the devil. It wasn't like that, the gas was contested. On the other hand, it was not the case that the federal government had applied for the approval of Nord Stream 2, the companies did that. Ultimately, for the federal government and for me, it was a matter of deciding whether we would make a new law as a political act to expressly refuse approval of Nord Stream 2.

ZEIT: What prevented you from doing that?

Merkel: On the one hand, such a refusal in combination with the Minsk Agreement would, in my view, have dangerously worsened the climate with Russia. On the other hand, the energy policy dependency arose because there was less gas from the Netherlands and Great Britain and limited production volumes in Norway. …

I think that Merkel is obfuscating. Her original intent with Minsk II was not to buy time to arm Ukraine. Her intent was to prevent a further war and to make peace. The argument, that it gave time for Ukraine to arm, is only made now and only to save her political ass in the current political climate.

The proof for that is in what she also brings up, Nord Stream 2, which has always had her full support. Its intent was to make Germany independent from the pipelines through Ukraine and Poland. But war came before the much delayed pipeline was ready. And any realistic alternative for Germany's current position was gone after the U.S. finally blew it up. Her answer with regards to Nord Stream 2 makes no sense if she, at the same time that Nord Stream 2 was being built, had intentionally prepared Ukraine for war.

There is another point that makes the 'bought time' ex post argument invalid. In 2014 Russia came under quite harsh sanctions and had huge problems to reconfigure its supply chains. Russia has used the time since to prepare for even harsher sanctions and a war. Notice how few problems Russia has now after really crushing sanctions were deployed. That required preparation. In 2018 Russia introduced a number of superior strategic weapons which are now deployed. In 2014 the S-400 air defense system was only a prototype. Today all Russian air defense groups have and deploy it. Russia used the time to up its war supplies, especially artillery ammunition and missiles.

If you think the 'bought time' argument is genuine look at the situation in Russia and compare with the Ukraine and the rest of Europe. Who has used the time better? Who is now in a better position?

The problem with Merkel's sorry and false excuse is that it creates, as Korybko points out, real damage. Everyone, including Russia's president Putin, seems to read only that one paragraph with the ex post argument, not the full context. This makes bringing the war in Ukraine to an end much more difficult.

Putin now says he had believed in Merkel's seriousness about Minsk. He is now deeply disappointed. Who can he talk to about peace when everyone one on the other side is non-agreement capable?

I hope that Putin will still read the interview in its full context and change his mind.

Was it Merkel's intent to undermine trust? I don't know. Why would she?

For the record: I have disliked most of Merkel's  policies. I never voted for her or for any of the parties which supported her governments. But she wasn't a bad politician and I did respect her. That respect is now gone.

Thank you, JB. That is very helpful. As is the link to the Scott Ritter appraisal, concluding thusly:

“…On reflection, Merkel was not wrong in citing Munich 1938 as an antecedent to the situation in Ukraine today. The only difference is this wasn’t a case of noble Germans seeking to hold off the brutal Russians, but rather duplicitous Germans (and other Westerners) seeking to deceive gullible Russians.
This will not end well for either Germany, Ukraine, or any of those who shrouded themselves with the cloak of diplomacy, all the while hiding from view the sword they held behind their backs.”

My own soberly amateur reflection is that this is not the banality of evil. This is evil incarnate.
karlof1, I tried to access the last link you provided to Putin’s conversation with the military mothers. It didn’t work for me. Could you again please provide a link to however much you were able to give us of that? And Paco, thank you for the human rights commission conversations. I accidentally had the sound running as I read; I noticed how extremely low Putin’s speaking voice was as he tried to be as reassuring as possible. His heart must really be broken.* As is mine.
* That is not a sign of weakness, in my view.

When reason fails think up a new conspiracy theory. There is no need for conspiracy theories when the evidence of rank incompetence and deceit is staring you in the face 24/7 for decades.

This is true, and as I read your many, many, many comments I realize that I am staring at rank incompetence and deceit in the face.
Sorry SeanAU, but you left the door wide open. Goodnight and Merry Christmas.

If your country or ISP blocks access to the Kremlin site you will need to use a VPN.
Or you can phone me and I will read it in my softest Putin voice.

“
meeting between Trump, Putin, and Lavrov at the White House “

NEVER happened. Putin and Trump met in Helsinki.
Lavrov and Sergey Kislyak (Russian ambassador to US) met with Trump in White House.
Putin. No.
@bar will correct me
but Putin has not visited the U$ in a decade..
Posted by: Melaleuca | Dec 10 2022 4:14 utc | 205
If this is true then my memory fails me, as it often does at 70, and I apologize. Let me ask this question, was it at Helsinki that the western press was prevented from attending and the US stenographer was bound by an oath of silence?
1). “Trump Hosts Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and Ambassador Kislyak at White House” May 10, 2017. (Possible that Lavrov took the information)
2). “The one-on-one meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is running overtime and has now passed the two-hour mark.
A Finnish official said the two leaders were still meeting as of 4:09 p.m., two hours after they began their meeting in the Gothic Hall of the Presidential Palace in Helsinki. The White House had scheduled 90 minutes for the meeting, in which only translators are present.”

Yes, it was Helsinki that I was thinking of, and that was July 2018. What I remember is that there were discussions that the liberal press was hopping mad about in both cases because they were not in the rooms during some of the discussions. Such discussions could not be relayed by phone, for reasons we all understand. Besides, I said I am sure about this, but I have no PROOF. Just seems logical, they could have been talking about the Pee Pee tapes, what say you.

“Bakhmutsky butcher” Zaluzhny does not take into account the losses near Artemovsk – Shurygin
In the battles near Artyomovsk (DPR), which received the unspoken name “Bakhmut meat grinder”, in addition to the fact that constantly arriving fresh untrained reserves of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are being ground, the most elite units also suffer crushing losses.
This was announced on the TV channel “Russia 1” by military expert Vladislav Shurygin.
The expert cited incredible numbers of losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Artyomovsky direction.
“It is high time for the current commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Pan Zaluzhny, to give the honorary name “Bakhmut Butcher”. Because what he did near Bakhmut is a monstrous crime. That is, on a front of 10 by 10 kilometers to put 10 thousand Ukrainians in a month – these are not even the trenches of the First World War, this is something more transcendent. This bet on war with people, when the resource is endless, and you can throw it and throw it, fill it up with bodies, this is an indicator of degradation, including the Ukrainian military school.
It is easy to report to the people when no one knows the losses, no one knows the price, and you tell how glorious the “offensive” was, and how much we took away. But, as we remember, they took a little bit at once, and since then there has been a battle in which every week Ukrainians lay down their lives by the thousands,” Shurygin said.
Nevertheless, according to him, the results of the winter campaign will be decisive for the course of the war.
“This is clear to everyone, that’s why Zaluzhny doesn’t want to go on the offensive so much, that’s why he puts people so furiously in order to report at least somewhere that they are standing to death. But this “Bakhmutsky butcher” cost Ukraine dearly. Of course, they put a lot of people through this meat grinder, who were simply taken from the street and sent on the second day. But after all, very experienced units also died there, they were ground.
The 65th brigade was withdrawn, which fought from the first day and was considered one of the most trained, a brigade that had been trained by foreign instructors since 2014, in fact, an exemplary brigade. Therefore, yes, all the main fights are ahead, but I look ahead very calmly and confidently, ”the expert explained.

E.H. Carr wrote a nice little book that covers your question.
German-Soviet Relations Between the Two World Wars, 1919–1939
It’s been some years since I read it but will have another quick look today.
It’s available at the Internet Archive: Road To Rapallo p. 48
At the time I read that I learned that the topic of German-Soviet relations between the Wars I & II was quite intriguing.
German-Russian relations are still critical, hence the US/West efforts to perpetuate NATO’s motto ‘Russia out, US in, Germany down’.
Germany & Turkey, both very important in the Big Pic Shift imo.

Back in March, representatives of the US Air Force offered to transfer American MQ-9 Reaper UAVs to Kyiv, but the Pentagon has not yet completed consideration of such a possibility, the American newspaper Politico reported.
The Air Force thought they had the perfect plan: take the old Reaper drones they’ve been trying to get rid of for years and send them to Ukraine, which has been asking for long-range weapons.
As follows from the publication, the United States has “concerns about the transfer of secret technologies” to the Ukrainian side, as well as the fact that “some [drones] are almost guaranteed to be shot down.” The article notes that immediately after the start of the special military operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, Kyiv used Turkish Bayraktar TB2 UAVs, but later “they became a target for Russian air defense systems and electronic warfare systems.” This “raised concerns at the Pentagon about how American drones would perform in such an environment.”

Interesting read by Larry Johnson

While Biden critics are disgusted by trading a Black, Lesbian basketball player, Brittney Griner, for the notorious arms dealer, Viktor Bout, Biden supporters are ecstatic. Personally, I think any effort to free Griner is ridiculous, but she played a role in making herself a victim. The real story lies behind the Western meme that portrays Bout as the spawn of Satan intent on creating mayhem and slaughter around the globe. I have a different take.
I believe Viktor Bout was a Russian intelligence officer operating under cover as an arms dealer. In this capacity he could identify key players in revolutionary and criminal movements around the world. It is the United States that has created the Merchant of Death tale.

Indeed, also often overlooked was Soviet-German strategic raw material trade, including transit of third parties trade materiel, absolutely critical to German re-armament & future War effort, Germany receipting such in good faith ‘to the letter’ over the border on freight trains up to the very moment before Op Barbarossa commenced on Jun22’41, all whilst Germany serially prevaricated & evaded it’s own obligations in bad faith to USSR over the preceding period.
Shades of past future echoes in specifically Germany’s Merkel (MinskII/NordstreamII/MH17) & France’s Macron(MinskII/MH17), & wider Empire through to today …

The following is precisely what Merkel’s newest confessions mean. Given the very basic fact that almost all EU politicians serve as third level in hierarchy front persons behind the #1- The City of London-based bankers followed by #2- the western shadow government led by the European branch of the AIPAC, Merkel’s confessions mean from where she was standing (theoretically as German Chancellor) she noticed that EU’s handlers decided that the Minsk Agreement could give the time needed for an Ukrainian rearmament program thus preparing it for a major conflict against Russia. In other words, she gave her opinion from the point of view of an observer or a journalist reporting what she saw during the MINSK meeting.

Thank you very much b, for the properly translated interview.
I don’t wholly agree with the conclusions and will parse, Muttis and b’s statements to show that.
“
” are from b’s article. /-
.-/ are MY opinion. Sorry it is so long.
“It was an attempt to prevent just such a war. “
/-She didn’t want a war or even such a war, but she was a leader of a militarily occupied nation of 75 years and her options for independence were therefore limited. You can’t be elected if you state your aim is independence from the occupying imperial forces that you are required to support to even have a chance of standing for election.
Can any politician?
And be allowed to win?
The only way is to play the game, get in, STAY IN and build a unassailable position and alliances that would allow for the possibility of independence.
That is the political way – by being in the tent pissing out – then finding a way to clear out the elephant in that room. -/
“There was also U.S. pressure as it did not want Minsk fulfilled. Merkel however can not say that out loud.
/ -THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT SHE HAS DONE WITH THIS STATEMENT-/
“By late 2019 she must have recognized that Minsk II was blocked forever. “
/- she must have known at the inception that it was a red herring and she was being used by the occupation FUKUS governance-/
“It was a serious defeat for her but there was nothing she could do about it.”
/-oh she could do something about it and DID-/
“Merkel: But that also requires to say what exactly the alternatives were at the time. I thought the initiation of NATO accession for Ukraine and Georgia discussed in 2008 was wrong. “
/-not even did she know in 2014, she is STATING that she knew where this was leading in 2008; funnily enough that’s when Putin also stated it at the Munich Conference, didn’t he? -/
“It also used this time to get stronger, as you can see today.
in early 2015, Putin could easily have overrun them at the time. And I very much doubt that the NATO countries could have done as much then as they do now to help Ukraine.”
/- this is the crucial statement about what the Imperiums plan was To INITIATE an invasion of the republics as a R2P these peoples.
WHY would the Waste want to provoke that?
To put a stop to German independence, the sane EU /EurAsia cooperation and most of all to cleave the plans of getting the SCO upto speed (Russia and China were working on it since the 1990’s) ; To keep steering the BRICS away from that new entity with China and stop the rest of the bullied world into joining that multipolar objective.
The Imperiums Masters needed to build the propaganda against Russia and then China and keep the BRICS as their thing.
By portraying Putin as the mad , bad, dictator, who invaded little old Ukraine.
Because he had stopped their plans of the full desecration and parcelling up the lands and resources of Russia. Because he was refusing to play their game or retiring and letting their puppets and oligarchs take over and sell it all to the Western hyenas -/
“Ukraine attached great importance to remaining a transit country for Russian gas. It wanted to channel gas through her territory and not through the Baltic Sea. Today it is sometimes acted as if every Russian gas molecule was from the devil.”
/- lol ain’t that the TRUTH -/
“I think that Merkel is obfuscating. Her original intent with Minsk II was not to buy time to arm Ukraine. Her intent was to prevent a further war and to make peace. The argument, that it gave time for Ukraine to arm, is only made now and only to save her political ass in the current political climate.”
/- she has NO NEED of a political arse anymore , she built one and USED it to stay a lot longer than expected, she steered a EU against the wishes of the FUKUS vultures and resisted the BrexShitheads in all their forms being seeded across the EU , through dark money for funding of ‘popular’ new parties as well as mass media and social media manipulation – /
“The proof for that is in what she also brings up, Nord Stream 2, which has always had her full support. Its intent was to make Germany independent from the pipelines through Ukraine and Poland. “
/- BINGO. Yes exactly-/
“But war came before the much delayed pipeline was ready. “
/- war only came after she finally LEFT office , within weeks as was planned by the hegemony, remember it was cancelled in 2021, because Russia ‘got wind’ of the provocations planned DURING Covid and moved a very large numbers of troops to threaten a massive overreaction which would have hurt a lot of the wrong part in the planned provocation in Ukraine.
The pipeline was only ‘not ready’ because the US had introduced unilateral sanctions against individual companies and individuals building it, to stop them completing it before Merkel had to leave office; Getting the wannabe minnows to withhold permissions etc. the pipeline was ready, it was pressurised and was held up by paperwork. She could do no more and was stopped from inaugurating it as her last action as the chancellor that had given Germany a road to actual independence -/
“And any realistic alternative for Germany’s current position was gone after the U.S. finally blew it up. “
/- Yes. PERFIDIOUS bastards that we are.
I DIDN’T believe that the dumb desperate Imperial late stage Caesars and their mindless praetorians would actually blow up a massive piece of infrastructure! They did the bridge as well.
It’s like blowing up the Channel Tunnel!
It is a direct provocation to force a response that would be used in the propaganda war – the only war that the Collective Waste has to hang onto its hegemony. -/
“Her answer with regards to Nord Stream 2 makes no sense if she, at the same time that Nord Stream 2 was build, had intentionally prepared Ukraine for war.”
/- As a leader of a country in the Occupied Empire, even if she didn’t want that, she had the Collective responsibility of making it happen, just as the U.K. and other owned assets were ‘duty bound’ to do. She is admitting exactly the position of the West -/
“Russia has used the time since to prepare for even harsher sanctions and a war. Notice how little problems Russia has now after really crushing sanctions were deployed. That required preparation. “
/- Russia has done it by building the alliances, strengthening the SCO, and by fighting the Propaganda War and winning it across the World. They are actually very good at shuttle diplomacy, rigorous support including militarily, beating western PMC’s at their own game and by gaining the moral high ground through the SMO action and by such a declaration at this time by Angela-/
“In 2018 Russia introduced a number of superior strategic weapon which are now deployed. In 2014 the S-400 air defense system was only a prototype. Today all Russian air defense groups have and deploy it. Russia used the time to up its war supplies, especially artillery ammunition and missiles.
Who has used the time better? Who is now in a better position?
Who has used the time better? “
/- who? The Multipolar new order has.
It is born through this ‘war’-/
“The problem with Merkel’s sorry and false excuse is that it creates, as Korybko points out, real damage. “
/- damage against the lying empire in the eyes of the world as she ‘spills the beans’ on the intent of these inside the tent pissing out on the rest of the world-/
“Everyone, including Russia’s president Putin, seems to read only that one paragraph “
/- mission accomplished, Mutti has confirmed the Empires duplicity in the eyes of the world that the Collective Waste can’t be trusted.
Saudis seem to have agreed, as does the queue of these wishing to join the SCO and get away from the Dollar Hegemony and its countless bases-/
“Putin now says he had believed in Merkel’s seriousness about Minsk. He is now deeply disappointed. Who can he talk to about peace when everyone one on the other side is non-agreement capable?”
/- THAT is so that everyone can see the nasty Collective Waste wants to keep the rest of us majority down, best if we stick together and don’t let them bully us anymore, we can protect ourselves, see? -/
“Was it Merkel’s intent to undermine trust? “
/- HELL YES, in the Collective Waste’s dying Empire and its Propaganda and systems of control, financial, military and controlled media -/
“I don’t know. Why would she?
I hope that Putin will still read the interview in its full context and change his mind”
/- I hope it’s these of us, who don’t believe that we are the bad guys , who change our mind, because the rest of the world already has-/

Respectfully, you yourself are conflating short hand references commonly used re THE USA. Re The State, Executive Government, Congress, it’s Military, Agencies & Institutions, overt & covert factions & power politics players, etc within with … THE American people, citizenry. Your conflation & projected mis-attribution.
Agree fully with moral disgust & human degradation re your post, yet, only US citizens, no foreign power, is ultimately able to determine the nature & acceptance of its own government, leaders, & most importantly not the mere words but deeds & actions of, its policies. US citizens are just as responsible as the ‘Good little Germans’, ‘or Japs’ or ‘Barbarian Hordes’ or ‘Merciless Vikings’, etc, the responsibility cannot be denied, disowned or cast-off, to create a faux equivalence deniability escape clause to salve ones conscience or wounded humanity.
The Russian Federation Executive Government, for example, reflects the will & desires of its citizens re the war in Ukraine via its conduct & actions. Where was & is the ‘Shock & Awe’, routine & utterly indifferent mass indiscrimate destruction & slaughter ?
The annihilation of the city of Raqqa, Wikileaks ‘Collateral Murder’, the ‘School of the Americas’ & the Shahs ‘SAVAK’, Le Mays & McCarthurs genocidal psychopathy, legalized Torture, extra-legal & extra-territorial routine daily assassinations & murders globally, ~200,000-1,000,000 murdered non-belligerent Phillipino’s, & all that followed re Imperial policy with the determined intention to become sole global hegemon, thence The Sole Remaining SuperPower, & now never accept even trivial change in that status, going back 124 years at least ?
‘Tis reflective & representative of what ? Acceptance or indifference ? By whom ?
Between 1898 & 1902 dwindling to extinction in 1920, the USA openly publicly vigorously debated foreign Imperialism & the consequences to the nation thereof, The People made their choice & was formalized in State doctrine, Policies & Law. The American Anti-Imperialists League, including the likes of Mark Twain, lost the national debate.
That is the road We have traveled to come to where we are today. We the People.
Peace.

One last thing. You need to remember what happened between Putin and Merkel at the G20 in 2014. Not many people remember this meeting, but it was pivotal. Putin sat with Merkel until 2am and tried to reason with her and left direktly after the meeting with the comment that he needs to get a much needed sleep. This was the meeting that could have saved Europe from war. But Merkel chose the other path.

Then too, we can’t dismiss the need Lenin & Co. had for capital, so with Germany pantsed by the Versailles Treaty,
the cooperation was kind of a secret win-win for both parties. (Mao had a similar need for capital too which, as was

I recall the immediate aftermath of 9/11 in the U.S., where deafening chest-thumping outrage and demands to invade Afghanistan and simply run over Pakistan if it refused to permit the attack through its own country dominated Internet babble about the appropriate response with virtually no understanding that we were simply experiencing legitimate payback for our behavior in the Middle East over a full half-century or more.

You experienced no such thing. You experienced your own governments continuation of the same policy by arranging this phony attack on itself. It was an ultimate false flag to justify for the naive its continued criminal international behavior. And it worked.

This is a idea put out by “Geroman” on Twitter, that I find interesting.
**
That Merkel’s “confession” has given Putin an “out” if he wants to take it. The SMO was justified by the build-up of NATO during the “Minsk II” period.
It was NOT an invasion but a reaction.
So all the MSM blurb about an “unwarranted invasion” is suddenly shown to be wrong. Putin had a reason, Merkel said so.
Now we will seee if anything happens.
*
Separate conclusion is that some people want this war to end, and will try to find a way, that is “diplomatically” possible in spite of Western brain-washing propaganda.
**
It may have been previously posted here, but I don’t have the time to read through as I would like to.

According to Mikhail Gorbachev that did not happen
Above Posted by: Bill Smith | Dec 10 2022 0:47 utc | 146
Others have already corrected you on this point but perhaps you’re just confused by Gorbachev’s very precise distinction between general policy statements and those made in a specific context (in this case, that of German reunification). In fact, the subject arose in his, and others’, conversations with high-level representatives of the U.S., the U.K., France, and West Germany, as is evident in the related transcripts based on FOIA and similar material from the other countries involved collected by a group or researchers at George Washington University and in the 500+ page tome “Not One Inch” based on decades of research by M. E. Sarotte published last year by Yale University Press – not to mention that your own link ironically contains the statement
I will quote Baker: “NATO will not move one inch further east.”

Though I do question why Trust only dropped to almost zero. What he needs to hit Absolute Zero simply boggles my mind. But that’s Putin.

There is no reason to be confused by this, there is a very simple and logical explanation. He probably lives by the same principle as I do: “Never issue an ultimatum to yourself”. This is especially true when the other side has yet to understand this point.

Seems pretty obvious that France wanted to engage in European diplomacy and joined up with Germany as usual to produce an EU-axis…………BUT the Baltics, Poles, UK worked with USA to undermine Agreement and give Kiev carte-blanche to breach it.
It was simply USA telling France and Germany to get back in line.

She’s moving with the Zeitgeist. It doesn’t matter what Putin’s reaction is, because the west’s peoples won’t hear about it. What does matter is that the west’s peoples get the impression that their leaders did their best for Ukraine, before they had to pull the plug on supporting its lost cause against big bad Russia.

Yes, this is the key thing that few are talking about, but which needs to happen. I am glad you call it a likely result.

Posted by: Norwegian | Dec 10 2022 9:44 utc | 235

Whatever is being said by Merkel can only be seen as an attempt at rewriting history. Does it really matter what she thinks the purpose of Minsk 1 and 2 was? The effective result was to delay solving the Donbas problem and what she says about rearming Ukraine after 2014 is exactly what has happened. I think that Merkel’s and NATO’s assessment was that Russia was in no position to advance further in Ukraine, an assessment which proved to be correct. She thought that by the time NS 2 was finished that in any case Russia will be unable to counter the rearmament of Ukraine and its virtual slow incorporation into the west, by which time Russia will settle for providing cheap gas to Germany and Europe and no longer bother with Ukraine.

Posted by: Orage | Dec 10 2022 9:45 utc | 236

Regardless of Merkel’s intentions, Germany’s role in the conflict has been a colossal failure: There is a war now, despite Germany having been – as a guarantor of Minsk II – on the driver seat for a peaceful solution.
Does it really matter if Merkel originally thought the way to peace was via strengthening Ukraine, or by enforcing Minsk II?
Since not amount of training and arms deliveries can bring Ukraine to eye level with Russia, the only possible outcomes of Minsk II were either some form of more or less peaceful settlement with a Russian Krim and neutral eastern republics.
Or the war that we now have. If the current war was indeed Merkel’s goal, if she deliberately derailed Minsk II to start a war with tens, hundreds of thousands of casualties, with very little prospect for Ukraine to gain more than they already had with Minsk II (a russian Krim, eastern districts with limited independence AS PART OF UKRAINE and the right to continue building up Ukraines military strength as they like), if derailing Minsk II and starting a war was Merkel’s intention: Then she was very successful. As a war criminal and international terrorist.
If the goal was preventing the next war in Europe by strengthening Ukraine’s negotiating position: Then she was an utter failure.
Either way, not a happy end for the lady who, until recently, was considered one of the most successful politicians in history.

A one-off transaction, almost entirely symbolic (no offence to those now repatriated), no significant property, resource or profit taking opportunity over which some other Empire pirate crew might later cultivate increasingly homicidal ambition.
The U$ is a failed state. A wealthy one, for all its disparities, but a failed one.
The various US pirate / power groups contend, conspire and collaborate with each other but under no circumstance do they police each other. There is no State authority with which to make a deal that will later be upheld to the detriment of any pirate crew with the power to act on its avaricious designs.

Posted by: anon2020 | Dec 10 2022 9:56 utc | 238

Does it make any difference what Merkel thought, even assuming she’s telling the truth, or what Hollande or even Putin thought? It was clear from the start that Ukraine was never going to give the LPR or DPR any kind of autonomy, let alone independence. That part of Ukraine was too important to Ukraine’s economy and its crooked oligarchs, and they were never going to give up $billions in assets and wealth. That’s why the one person’s statement that can be taken as truth was Poroshenko’s when he said Ukraine had no intention of abiding by Minsk but instead viewed it as an opportunity for Ukraine to arm itself.
Also, the US was lurking in the background; and having developed a presence in Ukraine over 60 years, including control of the government and ownership of assets (I’ve read that one of the big agribusinesses owns 20% of Ukraine’s farmland) plus labs and Burisma, they also were not going to give up any part of that. So the ink was barely dry on Minsk when Ukraine began arming itself and the US began supplying the arms. There are your two culprits.

I stopped taking Merkel seriously after “wir schaffen das” (her statement in 2015 that initiated a huge wave of immigrants). She tries to be a “good girl” who acts according to what she sees as the consensus but she misses the capacity to think things through and to understand what the likely consequences will be. She is not a real leader.

Posted by: Wim | Dec 10 2022 10:37 utc | 242

Worth mentioning here that Merkel is 100% fluent in Russian and has met Putin face-to-face several times, and so yeah, Putin probably DID trust her on a personal level in a way he doesn’t with other Western leaders.
Hearing her “walk back” the Minsk agreements probably was the final nail in the coffin of his trust level in Western agreements.

Posted by: Sam | Dec 10 2022 10:39 utc | 243

Sorry I have not read all the comments and this has probably been said by others.
Merkel is not a fool; she knows what she is doing. I think she is very angry at the way things have happened and is now calling out the crooks and liars in the West for acing in bad faith. She has kicked the West in the teeth and given ammunition to Russia. If she is included in this, so be it.

Posted by: Tim | Dec 10 2022 10:42 utc | 244

As a german it was initially clear to me that Merkel tries to survive in todays hostile, transatlanticist environment in Germany.
The stupid, easy and effective pre-war mechanisms are at work here. People who were trying to build good relationships with Russia are today treated like traitors. “Confess, then oublicly hate Russia, otherwise earn shitstorm and be politically and economically dead” – Germany 2022.
So, a weak, but very obvious move by Merkel.
Putin is disappointed maybe for strategic reasons. Maybe he wants to finally get rid of hopeless sentimental feelings about Germany.
Germany is lost.

I think Merkle likely held both the peaceful settlement idea and the delay for time for military build-up idea for the period 2014 – 2020 or 2021. This is not cognitive dissonance at all. Foreign policy politicians cannot foresee the future so must work to achieve ‘best’ outcome for all likely outcomes.. Eventually documentary evidence, notes of meetings etc., will tell how fully different options were pursued. But I think France and Germany could legitimately have desired and wanted peace but had to know—inconceivable not to know-that some US and Ukraine diplomats goal was eventual war. Not cleat in 2014 that peace would not be forced on Poroshenko and US. Merkle was playing both games, I believe history will eventually prove

Let’s pretend that I’m Merkle and I’ve seen the tic-tacing from the Yanks pleading for an off-ramp. Let’s further pretend that I’m cut from the same cloth as Nanci Pelosi i. e. that I’m one of Ed Dutton’s spiteful mutants and want to do humanity harm. What would I do? I think I’d give a few hi-profile interviews telling folk that I (and the West) deliberately and successfully deceived the Russians the last time we entered negotiations with them. That whould help to screw things up nicely, dontya think?

Thank you for that translation. It certainly sounds genuine, an attempt to prevent the war now unfolding – or escalating. Of course genuine efforts will not bear fruit along as those executing this war do not realize that it will eventually lead them to the conflict they are trying to avoid – nuclear Armageddon – because what they are fighting for, power, is an illusion. I keep plunging this message. Thanks B.

I don’t know whether or not to credit Putin with this level of “5D chess”, but I think he may have known full well that they were lying with Minsk 1.0 & 2.0, and he’s lying when he said he believed Merkel … because remember, he’s been in the intelligence services, he knows the west’s “leaders” are a bunch of lying thieving murderous bigots and fascists, so why would he trust them on anything, especially when they have such a very long and well documented history of lying about absolutely everything? Well … there’s a very good reason why he’d pretend he didn’t know and act stupid on it … and that is because the west is gullible and arrogant enough to fall for that lie, and by doing so, he tricks them into over committing, because not only did they think they’d get Ukraine, they thought they’d make great inroads into Russia, but instead what has happened? They’ve committed economic suicide, drained themselves of their arms armaments ammunition and manpower, so Russia has been able to make enormous progress in de-Nazifying not just Ukraine but the world at large, with many foreign fascists joining the fray and getting themselves killed

Helmholtz Smith, Andrew Korybko and Andrei Martyanov did not understand Merkel because they do not know the German situation. Nor the French one.
Bernhard should understand even better that Merkel was a weak chancellor in a weak association with the French lame PrĂ©sident Hollande ( a đŸ€Ą)
In my opinion, Merkel is an honest politician. She now, one year after, try to deliver some keys and as always, in a discreet way for people who are willing to think …
She did not say that her intent with Minsk II was to buy time to arm Ukraine.
She said

And the 2014 Minsk agreement was an attempt to give Ukraine time.
…
It also used this time to get stronger

This is even confirmed by the newspaper’s note.

Merkel and Putin need time to find a peacefull path out of the Entrapment.
but NATO used this time to arm Ukraine

And Karlof1 is completely right because it was first of all France to enforce the agreement. But what to expect from a country in full social, economic and political collapse. Or from a German chancellor locked in a coalition with an SPD in ambush, ready to change sides to join the heirs of the environmentalist and anti-war movement that have become the German joint venture of the CIA and NATO.
The chancellor has tried to gain time, to preserve the balance, to keep powerful economic links.
Putin too.
But in the same time and thanks to him, Russia prepare the next step.
It is not fair to blame Merkel for the neoconservative and Straussian plan. These warmongers have come to grips with Trump and the MAGA.
In a world indifferent to the war in Syria, Yemen, Palestine or the Donbass, one must have an honest reading of events.
It’s not Merkel’s fault, it’s ours.

At last caught up a bit with “DunGroanin | Dec 10 2022 7:22 utc | 226”,
So Merkel has screwed the narrative that Russian actions on 24 February were “aggresive” and in truth it was a defensive move, “obligated by facts on the ground”.
I am waiting for the next installment, where the world’s MSM propaganda experts cover themselves with sackcloth and ashes in penitence – not. Although I do not know whether they will try to hide this or if it is too late as Tim says.
*
It is clear that the earlier attempt by NATOetc. to provoke Russia didn’t work. One added item is that the “original” plan may have included one arm of the potential attack, to cross into Russian soil directly, and so make it part of the “operational zone” from the start. (Which might have been to avoid a nuclear war if a; Russia was unprepared and b: it was “Ukraine” that attacked and not US-NATO.)

I cannot understand why anyone is surprised at this turn of events.
Basically, Minsk was for the purpose of saving an encircled Ukie army from annhilation, so it could rise from the dead, and like the Croats, overwhelm a sleepy adversary in a surprise attack.
The missed point….
Will the Russians…. ever again…. permit their adversary… in extremis… a negotiated reprieve???
I don’t know… and neither does anyone else…
But I doubt it….

Mr. Baker said in an interview in 2014, a few months after Russia seized Crimea and intervened in eastern Ukraine. “It is true that in the initial stages of negotiations I said ‘what if’ and then Gorbachev himself supported a solution that extended the border that included the German Democratic Republic,” or East Germany, within NATO. Since the Russians signed that treaty, he asked, how can they rely “on something I said a month or so before? It just doesn’t make sense.”
He was talking about whether NATO troops would be stationed in territory then constituting East Germany, not whether other countries would eventually be considered for membership in the alliance. Nonetheless, Mr. Baker picked up on Mr. Genscher’s formulation during a Feb. 9 visit to Moscow.
“There would be no extension of NATO’s jurisdiction for forces of NATO one inch to the east,” Mr. Baker told Mr. Gorbachev, coming back to the formula three times during the conversation.
Back in Washington, the National Security Council staff was alarmed. The word “jurisdiction” could imply that the NATO doctrine of collective defense would apply only to part of German territory, limiting German sovereignty. It was one thing to agree not to move troops into the East right away, as far as American officials were concerned, but all of Germany had to be part of NATO.
“The N.S.C. got to him pretty quickly and said that language might be misinterpreted,” Condoleezza Rice, then a Soviet adviser to Mr. Bush and later secretary of state under President George W. Bush, remembered in an interview for a biography of Mr. Baker.
Mr. Baker got the message and began walking back his words by ditching the term “jurisdiction” from all future discussions. Chancellor Helmut Kohl of West Germany likewise rejected Mr. Genscher’s formulation.
“I may have been a little bit forward on my skis on that, but they changed it and he knew that they changed it,” Mr. Baker recalled of Mr. Gorbachev. “He never once again in all the months that followed ever raised the question of NATO expanding its jurisdiction eastward. He then signed documents in which NATO did expand its jurisdiction.”

*Extortion is sometimes called the “protection racket” because the racketeers often phrase their demands as payment for “protection” from (real or hypothetical) threats from unspecified other parties; though often, and almost always, such “protection” is simply abstinence of harm from the same party, and such is implied in the “protection” offer.

Merkel has never had much power, but a lot of patience and a political method: Let the arrogant advance and pull the rug out.
At some point in 2019, it is obvious that she understood that her capacity was reduced to nothing. To get rid of VdL by sending it to Brussels was an error of judgement, since that time the European Commission and NATO (2 structures installed in the same city of Brussels) have taken power.

This may spoil Bernhard’s reading, but the “Covid crisis” was a historic opportunity for this coup.

“de facto” in a loose and limited way.
“De jure” There is no “United states of Europe” – yet. Hence little Hungary was able to use its sovereign statehood to veto the latest round of largesse Brussels wanted to bestow on Zelly. I doubt the usual loudmouths in the EU parliament (waves at Guy Verhofstadt) think this is the right moment to push for full-on military and foreign policy union, as a smack in the mouth often hurts.

Saudi Arabia hasn’t changed it’s mind. The late King Salman asked if the US took them for fools, after they had paid for terrorist proxies to do FUKUSIS dirty work since Yugoslavia, and FUKUSIS just laid back and thought of FUKUSIS when Russia, for its own interests in Syrian ports, intervened. Why have our treacherous Western allies not intervened back against Russia? We paid for these wars in order to get Damascus and our money says we are Amir Al Mu’mineen.
Kurdistan thought that Churchill would give the Caliphate to them after collaboration with FUKIS in 1918. Sorry darlings the Shari’ah doesn’t specify that co- operating with the Jews and Christians will get you the Caliphate. It specifically says that the Jews and Christians will only look after themselves.
But of course, if they were Amir ul Mu’mifuckingneen, and not a Western created, petro- dynasty, they would already know that.
In short, Saudi Arabia would like to displease FUKUSIS for deceiving it for 50 years. That does not make them a trustworthy ally of Putin. Saudi Arabia detests All of the principles of Russian or Chinese Socialism , human rights etc. with a deep loathing.

Two years ago, in November 2020, my employer sent us home for the second time because of the “Covid crisis”. As we were leaving the Office, I told my colleagues we were experiencing a new type of a coup d’etat, no medical crisis. They looked at me as if I was a Martian, but it was clearly correct…

NATO Expansion: What Gorbachev Heard
Declassified documents show security assurances against NATO expansion to Soviet leaders from Baker, Bush, Genscher, Kohl, Gates, Mitterrand, Thatcher, Hurd, Major, and Woerner
Slavic Studies Panel Addresses “Who Promised What to Whom on NATO Expansion?”
Published: Dec 12, 2017

Page from Stepanov-Mamaladze’s notes from February 12, 1990, reflecting Baker’s assurance to Shevardnadze during the Ottawa Open Skies conference: “And if U[nited] G[ermany] stays in NATO, we should take care about non-expansion of its jurisdiction to the east.”
Washington D.C., December 12, 2017 – U.S. Secretary of State James Baker’s famous “not one inch eastward” assurance about NATO expansion in his meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on February 9, 1990, was part of a cascade of assurances about Soviet security given by Western leaders to Gorbachev and other Soviet officials throughout the process of German unification in 1990 and on into 1991, according to declassified U.S., Soviet, German, British and French documents posted today by the National Security Archive at George Washington University (http://nsarchive.gwu.edu).
The documents show that multiple national leaders were considering and rejecting Central and Eastern European membership in NATO as of early 1990 and through 1991, that discussions of NATO in the context of German unification negotiations in 1990 were not at all narrowly limited to the status of East German territory, and that subsequent Soviet and Russian complaints about being misled about NATO expansion were founded in written contemporaneous memcons and telcons at the highest levels.
The documents reinforce former CIA Director Robert Gates’s criticism of “pressing ahead with expansion of NATO eastward [in the 1990s], when Gorbachev and others were led to believe that wouldn’t happen.”[1] The key phrase, buttressed by the documents, is “led to believe.”
President George H.W. Bush had assured Gorbachev during the Malta summit in December 1989 that the U.S. would not take advantage (“I have not jumped up and down on the Berlin Wall”) of the revolutions in Eastern Europe to harm Soviet interests; but neither Bush nor Gorbachev at that point (or for that matter, West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl) expected so soon the collapse of East Germany or the speed of German unification.[2]
The first concrete assurances by Western leaders on NATO began on January 31, 1990, when West German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher opened the bidding with a major public speech at Tutzing, in Bavaria, on German unification.

In response Dr. George W Oprisko@266,
I’d argue that Minsk was also intended, by the Russians, to give European states the opportunity to affirm their sovereignty. Successfully resolving the crisis in Ukraine with the prospect of enlarging the EU market and resuming normal trade relations with Russia should rationally have been a much more lucrative prospect than the creation of a militarized failed state and an impending military confrontation with Russia, to anyone with European interests in mind that is. That subservience to US dictate ultimately prevailed does not mean that there wasn’t any internal struggle over which path Europe would take, or that peaceful resolution of the conflict was dead on arrival. And, as I said before, I believe the Russian leadership calculated that either choice would ultimately strengthen their position in regards with the Western powers, since the effort to corral European states against their own self-interests would weaken their power projection and that of their US suzerain, and prepared for both possibilities.

Mutti Merkel has been raised in the GDR as a komsomolka who was the daughter of an outspoken anti-capitalist Protestant pastor. She speaks fluently Russian and was able to get along well with Vladimir Vladimirovich, a komsomolec from communist party descent, who however secretly had been brought in an Orthodox church by his mother to be baptized (- this fact later on became very important for Vladimir’s biography -). Komsomolka Angela Merkel was thought to be eccentric because of her Protestant background, komsomolec Vladimir Vladimirovich became eccentric, because of his radical abandonment of the Communist religion, exchanging it with the revived Russian Orthodox religion (which may be understood as a symbiosis of unspoiled Christian faith with true Russian patriotism). What is sorely missing in Angela Merkel’s curriculum vitae is a German patriotism that somehow matches the Russian patriotism of Vladimir Vladimirovich (compare this for example with Viktor Orban: his Hungarian patriotism does match quite well with the Russian patriotism of Vladimir Vladimirovich). When Angela Merkel refers to ‘Ukraine needing time to get stronger’, I think she doesn’t understand ‘stronger’ first and foremost in a military sense, but first and foremost that Ukraine needed to become stronger in the political sense of becoming united as one nation, just like chancellor Bismarck envisioned and realized the political unity of Germany in 1870. Ukraine never did exist before the era when the Soviet Union existed. Angela Merkel has utterly failed as a politician, because she didn’t provide any guidance to the newly invented entity of ‘Ukraine’ to become a united nation, while she as a German politician has firsthand experience with forging political unity between divided nations. Merkel’s embrace of the political concept of ‘Europe’ has emerged out of the post-war anti-patriotism that continually threatens to turn Germany into a failed state. Well, that’s one of the main reasons why Ukraine has become a failed state after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Ukraine’s ‘patriotism’ has grown out into an ill-conceived attempt of copying Germany’s flirt with Nazism. Anti-patriot Mutti Merkel doesn’t resemble patriot Viktor Orban in any sense and that’s her personal responsibility. Germany bears the political responsibility of having let the conception of an Ukrainian united state become a miscarriage.

The Zeitgeist is that… “no one cares” to borrow from AIB-speak.
Intenti9lons-shmuententions.
Sure, in better times of pasts we’d reflect and argue about nuances and lesser details a lot. Maybe in 100 years from now historians would.
But what we have at hands today is one simple and rough question: is Germany (the state and the nation) worth of being negotiating or not?
The answer is simple: it is not.
Whatever the reasoning “inside” for the foreign agents, other state and nations, in the end only the answer itself is whta matters. If they would spend a lot of time to negotiate with German nation and would put burden and restrictions upon themselves – would they get something in return Germans? The sad answer is: they won’t.
That is what matters for everyone. Why is it so – only matters for Merkel and Germans, not for the rest of the planet.
World become stricter, simpler, speeder.

Nordstream did an end run around the entanglements with Ukraine and Poland, two nasty minor powers. Germany’s destiny is to be Western Europe’s bridgehead into Central and Eastern Eurasia but the Banksters in BIS and Khazarian revivalists in Ukraine stand in their way. Put simply: the West is determined to prevent such a hookup.
She described Nordstream as a purely commercial, not (geo) political, venture. But no doubt everyone involved knew its greater import. It would have served as the first lever to finally prise Germany free from the post-war domination by her Western victors who for over a century have been determined to keep Germany down by creating a mutually beneficial, indeed symbiotic, connection, a living artery pumping life-giving abundant energy 24/7. That deep, daily connection would have just been the start.
The current German leader is clearly desirous of the same end and in the same sneaky workaround way: trade. If they can establish solid conduits they become similar in significance to the industrial lifeblood energy artery that would have been Nordstream.
Mutti’s problem remains today: the German eagle needs two heads facing in two directions otherwise known as having your cake and eating it AKA schizophrenia. They are enmeshed in Europe with US dominance therein whilst needing to pursue growth in Asia where many manufacturers, like Mercedes for example, are already making more net profit than in the sclerotic, anti-growth West with all its interminable special relationships and toxic red tape handling which transmits the slow arsenic of ancient rivalries and secret tribal subterfuges.
I suspect Mutti was trying to pull a fast one but wasn’t really up to it given no ability to stand up to the Americans or outflank senior operatives like Fuck Europe Nuland. As such she is typical of all European leaders these days: not up to the job, not even close.
The greatest irony, soon to be tragedy, of all is that, impossible as it might seem, collectively they are so terrible that they are making Biden a relative colossus, helping him become one of the most assertive and indeed consequential Presidents since 1945. No small feat! Bravo Euro Weaklings! Danke Mutti!

MoA is giving Merkel way too much credit.
I also think those quoting her interview as undeniable ‘proof’ she aimed to mislead Putin are also going one step too far.
Ultimately, whether she chose to deceive Russia or not, the net result is that Russia was deceived and Ukraine used the time to build up an army to confront it. That this happened on her watch is undeniable, so, willingly or not, she is responsible.
But Putin is also responsible though, for losing Ukraine in the first place and allowing Ukraine to fester on his doorstep in what is now for the world to see a formidable adversary to his much diminished military’s reputation. 11 months and Donetsk still getting shelled is a shameful indictment to the tactics and capabilities of the Russian military, since the well being of the people of the Donbass was their principle argument for intervening. Clearly, that is either not a priority, or they are unable to do much about it.
This war will cost everyone dearly.

[Merkel’s] original intent with Minsk II was not to buy time to arm Ukraine. Her intent was to prevent a further war and to make peace. The argument, that it gave time for Ukraine to arm, is only made now and only to save her political ass in the current political climate.

Merkel’s sorry and false excuse is that it creates
 real damage
makes bringing the war in Ukraine to an end much more difficult
Who can [Putin] talk to about peace when everyone one on the other side is non-agreement capable?

The first statement has my full support. Merkel is deep inside a humanist (IMO her only virtue, though). Yes, peace and cooperation were her motifs.
The second statement is a personal conclusion. My conclusion is a different one: Merkel delivered INTENTIONALLY a veiled moral justification for Putin to start and CONTINUE the SMO until its published goals are reached. Both the Nazi character of the Ukrainian regime (much clearer now than 2015) and the fact that there is no peace with these people and their USUK/Quisling handlers, made her choose sides. Indirectly though, a typical Merkel hallmark. The world will discuss how right Putin was to choose the path he hesitated to go for years in spite of his military advantage. By going this way she does two good things: 1) Making more clear to the world who the real warmongers are (even if some say now she contributed). She makes Western escalation to WW3 more unjustified, hence less likely. And 2) she / her camp recommend themselves as something that may become useful once this war is over in 2 or 3 years. Even though the Russians ostentatiously utter reproaches in the current phase, chances are high that they don’t misunderstand her.

No! It was the NATO-abetted Nazi escalation (10-fold?) of shelling in Donbass in mid-02/22, which finally forced Russian intervention… after 8 years of continual breaches of the “hallowed” Minsk Accords, all while its “guarantors” watched in deafening silence. Even NATO-centric OSCE reluctantly documented this escalation along the LOC. (The supposedly impartial OSCE was later kicked out of the Donbass as it was discovered to have been providing targeting information to the Nazis. (ÂĄQuĂ© sorpresa!))

Posted by: Bianca | Dec 10 2022 15:54 utc | 284

It’s very simple. Merkel recognized that every country is sovereign. Neither she, or other countries, nor the UN can force it to federalize.
Ukraine has managed its affairs the way it wants, which provoked Russia to attack in order to promote its security.
A similar situation prevails in east Asia, where China enjoys sovereignty over its Taiwan province. The US can’t change that internal affair, and the UN is legally powerless to do so also.
War is sometimes needed to solve political problems. It’s always been that way, and Merkel couldn’t change it.

Posted by: Don Bacon | Dec 10 2022 15:57 utc | 285

For Merkel to publicly admit the Minsk Agreements I and II were just a Deception tells the World that Europe and the USA cannot be trusted – that any agreement has no Goodwill and every Agreement is just a new level upon which to ratchet up more pressure on the party on the other side of any Agreement.
It is impossible to conclude that Putin naively accepted that European and American Leadership were sincere and honest Negotiators and Signators on the Agreement then, nor on any Agreement in the future.
Let all other nations of the World understand the underlying DECEIT of the last rump of delirious Leadership of these LIARS.

Posted by: kupkee | Dec 10 2022 16:05 utc | 286

The longer I think about this the more I agree with OttoE @288. Merkel had plenty of ways to manage her legacy here and no real reason she needed to speak publicly on it. She could have said she was duped by the evil Putin and that would work just fine for western audiences. She could have said nothing at all about Minsk or not addressed it directly. She chose to say this, as she said it and when she said it. It was a scheduled interview she agreed to and probably knew the basic outline of the interview beforehand.
It really does look like she undercut the German government and the whole western establishment. She came right out and said we can’t be trusted. Perhaps, and I find this likely, she’s lashing out because she sees the destruction of Germany in the current process. And she still has some ways to make western leadership pay a potential price for destroying Germany.

«Russia could have been a geostrategic partner with the US and the west. In fact, Russian could have been a counterbalance to China […]
“Partners” are equals, and the Russian Federation is not regarded by the USA ruling elites as an equal, but as a potential vassal like the UK (a voluntary vassal) or Germany (an involuntary vassal). «Abundant gas ensuring their competitiveness as a leading industrial – technological nation, not to mention further integration into the emergent, epoch-defining multipolar Eurasian Civilization.»
These would have been “concessions” only if the russian government had transferred ownership of those resources to megacorps in “the west”, something that Yeltsin, Khodorkosky or Navalny might sooner or later do.
Because just being willing to sell stuff for profit is not a concession that can be traded for security guarantees, but only for the concession of being willing to buy that stuff. And now with “sanctions” the USA have withdrawn the latter concession.
Note: delusional fools in Ukraine keep asking their “partners” to give them a no fly zone and other security guarantees in exchange of nothing, just like the RF expected, and are getting the same answer. But they are getting loans and weapons because they are giving something in exchange, a lot of soldier lives.
«no country in the West is agreement-capable»
Again, international treaties can be and are strictly respected, but only as long as the benefits one side gives continue to be paid for by the benefits they receive from the other side. Then they just expire. “Realpolitik” is not complicated.

You characterize US as keeping its promises to not expand NATO (now doubled and armed with nukes) right up to to Russia’s borders and to abide by the Minsk Accords as “huge concessions”? This is troll-speak.
“What could have the russians offered to the USA in exchange for not trying to do that?”
Oh, I don’t know … mutual, indivisible security and perhaps peace? Would that be a fair exchange?

I think it is pretty obvious based on the historical record that 1) the US is not an honest treaty participant in general, 2) The US was already arming Ukraine in 2014 and 2015 when the accords were signed (not good optics there), 3) US, NATO and Ukraine made no attempts whatsoever to enforce the accords, literally zero effort there, 4) Ukraine escalated the military attacks on eastern Ukraine throughout the civil war prompted by the US-backed coup, 5) ever since the SMO began the US has poured more weapons and resources in than in any conflict in the last several decades, indicating that this had been the plan all along.
Conclusion: Merkel meant that the US and NATO were not genuine about the accords, and had no intention of honoring them. It was to buy more time to put in the massive defense network that we helped install.

b: I think you are quite right about Merkel. But Putin? You hope Putin will not overreact and change his mind about negotiations? But political leaders obfuscate and misrepresent all the time. What makes you think that Putin himself is not taking advantage of the spat with Merkel and somewhat overstating his opinions about negotiation. After all, it’s not really to Russia’s advantage to negotiate anything right now, until at least Russia satisfies its objectives in Ukraine with military power. Once it’s done that, I assume they will be ready to negotiate; of course, from such a position of advantage that there may not be much to negotiate. Still, some diplomatic process will probably end the war. Until then, why should Putin not represent the western bloc as agreement incapable and untrustworthy? It’s certainly not inaccurate. Right now, I do believe he’s just not ready to bring the war to an end, nor should he be.

Can I hate her for this ?
“Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision to allow thousands of refugees stranded in Hungary to enter Germany caused a rift in her conservative bloc on Sunday (7 September) when her Bavarian allies accused her of sending a “totally wrong signal” to the rest of Europe.
The dispute broke out after Austria and Germany agreed to temporarily open their borders to thousands of mostly Syrian refugees in Hungary, whose right-wing government was unwilling and unable to cope with the influx.
Germany expects a record influx of 800,000 migrants and refugees this year, by far the most in the European Union. More than 100,000 asylum seekers were registered in August alone.
Merkel and Hungarian President Viktor OrbĂĄn had agreed by telephone that the decision to let refugees – many from Syria’s civil war – cross the borders was a temporary one made for humanitarian reasons, a German government spokesman said.”

“The two leaders embody the EU’s split over migration. Germany allowed a million people to enter in 2015, while Hungary has so far rejected a scheme to relocate 160,000 refugees from overcrowded camps in Greece and Italy.”

Whilst lots of good points have been SCORED in this thread, it’s been spoilt by everyone forgetting that there’s no such thing as Western Civilisation. There’s only the MSM Mediaplex aka The Stage/Theatre, and the Actors aka the Privately Owned Politicians.
The privately owned politicians are paid to do what they’re told to do by their disgustingly wealthy, greedy and blĂČody-minded Owners. They are NOT paid to listen to voters or act on the wishes and desires of voters.
Mutti was just being a Good Obedient Little Girl – like all ‘influential’ Western politicians – Male or Female.
Someone called it Theatre Of The Absurd. And that’s close enough for me…

For Merkel, it was really all about the economy, and energy security. The Minsk agreement wasn’t just buying time for Ukraine, but also for Germany, to get Nordstream II completed. There had already been problems with Russia threatening to turn off the trans Ukraine pipeline when Kiev was late paying its bills. Merkel could see that putting $7 billion into NSII was a better long term investment than paying Ukraine’s gas bill in order to keep the pipeline valves open.
Realpolitik usually involves energy flows somewhere down the line. Energy underpins economy, and the price determines export competitiveness. Additionally, gas is the only energy source capable of balancing the intermittency of wind and solar generation. Germany was under increasing pressure from Czech republic and Hungary to stop using their grids as giant zener diodes, and this meant more load balancing capability (with a secure future) was required. Especially given the pressure from the coalition greens to shut down nuclear generation.

Thanks for your post.
The Thruth all non-German needs to know:

Indirectly though, a typical Merkel hallmark.

1) May I adeed: such an article was “highly likely” revised by Merkel before publishing.
2)Is somebody here really thinking that Merkel could manipulate Putin?
