Christmas Eve’s tv news was mainly about what people are going to eat and how much they have spent on food. The birth of Christ was not mentioned. If I was an alien, I’d guess Christmas is a gastronomical event.

As someone in the Ukraine thread said, “Happy solstice”, thus removing any religious or ethnic or commercial references – except possibly pagan ones. 🙂 In particular because the Romans celebrated this day as one of their religious holidays, Saturnalia, IIRC which preceded the Christian religion, which celebrated the winter solstice.
Otherwise, “Bah! Humbug!” 🙂
Now, New Year’s Eve OTOH… I will be performing my usual ritual: two medium pizzas with three meat toppings, plus “Casablanca” and “The Maltese Falcon.” “Spend New Year’s Eve at Rick’s place!”

Btw, the traditional feast on Christmas Day here in Germany is usually roast duck with red cabbage and Thuringia-style potato dumplings. This year it was just a simple Boeuf Bourguignon, but at least accompanied by a nice bottle of quality Pinot Noir.
Times are getting noticeably worse.

Most of the names you list above have nothing to do with Jews or the Jewish people, are much older and/or from languages as far removed from the Jews as it gets.

No matter who or what is real or what I think or believe I’m pretty sure they could have gotten along just fine. Any disagreements and complaints are randomly dealt with by either Santa Claus (out of free coal), the Easter bunny (he can’t read), or the spirit of Stalin (how long until he loses patience?) 😀

You wouldn’t really be wrong, you know. People in high latitude areas would have been facing serious hunger right about this tine of year if you look back a few hundred years ago before globally integrated food production. A solstice feast was common in many cultures to raise spirits for the long slog until spring. Christian missionaries just slapped their own name on pre-existing festivities. The seasonal festivals really were gastronomical events (in addition to astronomical ones!) and the religious overtones pasted on later.

Time’s a flying! I thought Christmas was last month. Here in the US we are having what the meteorologists call a ‘bomb cyclone’, where the perpetual ‘hurricane’ that hovers over the North Pole dips down to one side of the globe. So it was -13C out when I woke up. The combination of cold weather and Christmas Day means that everything is super-quiet in my small town. Which is really very nice. I love it when it gets this quiet!

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky addresses his nation every night with a speech that usually gives updates of war, whether good or bad. His delivery on Christmas Eve was more somber than upbeat. It discouraged Christmas lights and bells. He said meals aren’t warm and that there may be an empty seat or two at this year’s table.
Zelensky described a loss of love, hope and even himself as the war hits the 10-month mark on Christmas Eve.
He began his speech, on a night typically filled with good tidings, cheer and joy, as one of “bitter aftertaste” and somewhat despair.
“Unfortunately, all the holidays have a bitter aftertaste for us this year. And we can feel the traditional Spirit of Christmas differently. Dinner at the family table cannot be so tasty and warm. There may be empty chairs around it,” Zelensky said.
“Our houses and streets can’t be so bright. And Christmas bells can ring not so loudly and inspiringly. Through air raid sirens, or even worse – gunshots and explosions. And all this together can pose a bigger threat. It is a disappointment. Of the higher forces and their power, of goodness and justice in the world. Loss of hope. Loss of love. Loss of myself …”
Zelensky recently returned home after a trip in the cloak of darkness to the United States and back on Wednesday, in which he met with President Joe Biden and asked Congress to continue providing aid to his country. The U.S. approved $1.85 billion in additional aid to Ukraine, which now includes the Patriot Air Defense System.
The war is entering its 305th day on Christmas and Russia has lost more than 101,000 soldiers since their invasion on February 24 this year.
Zelensky called Russia the “evil and darkness” that has invaded his country, and he vowed Ukraine would use the “wisdom of God” to overcome it.
“Isn’t this what evil and darkness, which have taken up arms against us, want in their essence? We have been resisting them for more than three hundred days and eight years,” Zelensky said. “And will we allow them to achieve what they want?
“In this battle, we have another powerful and effective weapon. The hammer and sword of our spirit and consciousness. The wisdom of God. Courage and bravery. Virtues that incline us to do good and overcome evil.
“Our path is illuminated by faith and patience. Patience and faith. These are twin forces. As it was said, “he who rules and controls his own spirit, is better than he who captures a city.” To endure does not mean to accept the circumstances. Patience is watching to make sure that we don’t let any doubt or fear into our minds. It is faith in one’s own strength.”

Since when has 24 December been “Christmas Eve” in the Ukraine?
Since when have Eastern Orthodox citizens of the Ukraine, namely the vast majority of the Ukraine population that professes a religion, celebrated Christmas on 25 December?
Perhaps Zelensky, who is not a Christian, might enlighten inquisitive minds in this matter. He seems to think that “Western” Christmas is celebrated by Ukrainian Christians, which it indeed is in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Western Ukraine, a church first promoted by the Roman Catholic Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and further promoted by the Roman Catholic Habsburg Austrian Empire. Perhaps Zelensky should visit the Kiev Pechersk Lavra on Christmas Eve, 6 January and find out what’s going on there, if he has not already by that time ordered its closure.

I don’t normally recommend movies but I watched Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio last night. A great family holiday treat in stop motion animation.
It works as both an exploration of the human existential crisis and an entertaining fable for kids. The treatment of the Italian fascists is also amusing.
It is definitely not the the typical Netflix woke garbage. The extra 36 minute documentary of how they did the animation and the director’s approach is also worth a watch.

As a devout anti-Christian, I still wish everyone here including the occasional Nazi (you know who you are) a very merry Christmas! It’s the best time of the year. And some of my fellow Americans should visit a European Xmas market if you ever have the chance. The ones in US vassal state Germany are very nice, but also Prague and Budapest!

You’re so programmed along the Rush Limbaugh paradigm that it’s “the left” that supports and cheers Zelensky. You are wrong. Did you seriously miss Mitch McConnel’s statements or those of the majority of Republicans? There is no divide when it comes to the War Party in the D.C. metroplex, suburbia and exurbs. Posts like that only further the divide along the fault lines of the Culture War(s) which the right (Joe Biden and the Clintons, not to mention Obama are part of the RIGHT) have been waging for decades under differing masks.

For many memorable years we said Mele Kalikimaka!!
But as most barflies know, it’s based on Solstice, which is the rebirth signaled by Nature in the Northern Hemisphere. The radical nature of one individual was suppressed and surrounded by many stories aimed at obfuscating his radicalism. His entire being was stolen by an evil institution that was adopted as the state religion by the first Outlaw Empire. But few are willing to acknowledge those Truths allowing the System to continue. The heartfelt homage paid to friends and family helps to overcome the commercialism and lies. At some point, humanity will finally grow up and admit the falsity of Santa Claus and genuinely recognize the radicalism of the one whose supposed birth is celebrated. That will come when Empire and its Plunder is finally defeated and relegated to the past so Peace can prevail and humans can truly enjoy and share goodwill towards all others.

That must be the Ukrainian death toll (omitting the ‘missing’), not the Russian. Russian force (VSRF, Rosgvardiya, FSB) death toll 2022-02-24 to 2022-12-15 is 10,229 (confirmed by name). Ukrainian losses are about ten times higher, so that comports well with what is known.
