When False Claims Are News – Russia, India, Nukes

A few days ago a small news item about India and Russia was issued that made some anti-Russian/pro-Indian scribes very happy:

India’s Maddening Russia Policy Isn’t as Bad as Washington ThinksForeign Policy, Dec 9
India upholds the rules-based, Western-led international order—but in its own way.

Modi is also skipping an annual summit with Putin, reportedly over the latter’s threats to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

That claim sounded strange to me. The author of the FP piece  is Derek Grossman "a senior defense analyst at the Rand Corp., an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California, and a former daily intelligence briefer to the U.S. assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs."

Hmm. The link he gives goes to a Bloomberg piece:

Modi to Skip Annual Putin Summit Over Ukraine Nuke Threats

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi won’t be holding an annual in-person summit with Vladimir Putin after the Russian president threatened to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The relationship between India and Russia remains strong but trumpeting the friendship at this point may not be beneficial for Modi, said a senior official with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue.

Putin had never threatened to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine or anywhere:

Note that Putin does not mention Russia's nuclear weapons. He instead empathizes that Russia has new 'different' weapons that are 'more modern' than those of the 'West'. He means hypersonic missiles which can avoid 'western' air defenses and hit decision centers in Brussels, London and Washington even without nuclear warheads.

All the war mongering talk and reports about Russia's alleged threat of nuclear weapon use in Ukraine is totally unfounded. That 'western' media suddenly engage in it shows that it is part of a well directed propaganda campaign.

It is an invention of U.S. propaganda. It is unlikely that the Indian government has fallen for it. So who then made Bloomberg replay that nonsense?

Note that while the Bloomberg report was written by its correspondent in India the nationality of its sources is not given. There are in fact two distinct sources: "people with knowledge of the matter" and "a senior official with knowledge of the matter". The 'nuclear' issue seems to have come from the first 'people' source while the 'official' second source only gives a general picture of Modi's potential motivation.

In an updated version of the piece, which kept the lede unchanged, Russian officials rejected the whole story:

“It won’t be this year,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said of prospects for a Putin-Modi summit, the state-run Tass news service reported later Friday.

India’s decision was clear at a regional summit held in September in Uzbekistan, when Modi urged Putin to seek peace in Ukraine, said a Russian official familiar with the preparations, who asked not to be identified to discuss matters that aren’t public.

There had already been an Indian Russian summit at the side of the Uzbekistan meeting and no further summit was necessary.

In a Reuters piece an Indian source also rejected the claim:

No Modi-Putin summit this year after they met in September- Indian govt source

The government source, who declined to be named citing the sensitivity of the matter, said the decision not to hold a summit was taken much earlier and that the nuclear angle was not a factor.

Modi and Putin met on the sidelines of a regional security bloc summit in Uzbekistan in September and have spoken on the phone a number of times this year, including on the subject of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Indian Economic Times also debunked the Bloomberg claim:

India-Russia annual summit could not occur due to scheduling issues

The annual India Russia Summit could not happen this year due to scheduling issues, according to highly placed sources who dismissed reports of summit being postponed due to threat of nuclear war in Ukraine.

Sources dismissed Western media reports that Russian President's “nuclear threat” had any role to play in India-Russia Summit not happening in December.

The decision that the summit will not take place due to scheduling issues was taken months ago, sources said.

Relations between India and Russia are lively and excellent:

ET has learnt senior Russian functionaries could visit India in near future to discuss contours of the partnership. Last December the Russian President had travelled to India for the annual summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin had spoken several times over phone this year and the two met in Samarkand in September to give push to strategic partnership.

At the September meeting considerable time was devoted to Russian fertiliser exports to India to meet demands of local farmers.

Modi and Putin also discussed energy ties (oil & gas) besides coal, coking & other investments in each other’s country. The two leaders had also discussed predictability of supply of key commodities to India.

Later in November Foreign Minister S Jaishankar travelled to Moscow with a intra Ministerial delegation to push economic partnership. Earlier the NSA had travelled to Moscow with a intra Ministerial delegation to push economic partnership. Earlier the NSA had travelled to Moscow.

India had withstood Western huge to take sides in the Ukraine conflict and Russia is now India’s biggest oil supplier. Bilateral trade has jumped manifold this year.

The original Bloomberg claim is thereby completely debunked. But the piece is still up and without any correction. The "people with knowledge of the matter" it cited to inject the nuke stuff were likely either from the U.S. or Britain.

Neither the Indian nor the Russian side had planned for another summit this year. They have excellent relations and the nuke stuff was just outright nonsense.

That RAND experts, who write strategic plans for the Pentagon, fall for such obvious propaganda is dangerous.

Fusion “breakthrough”- $billions used to produce a burst of pennies worth of heat (that could in theory be converted to a fraction of that value in electricity), once, and still at least 100:1 from breaking even in energy in vs. out any real sense. Inertial confinement with hundreds of 0.5% efficient lasers is a very unlikely path to a practical reactor. Scientifically of some interest because it’s kind of a milestone, but of no practical significance within most of our lifetimes most likely (my opinion, but if you look at the progress time scales it’s apparent we are talking decades and decades, if ever).
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2022/12/department-of-energy-nuclear-fusion-breakthrough-nif-livermore/672439/
The most developed fusion reactor is ITER, an international effort in France, which is suppose to produce (still experimental level) 500MW of power from 50MW input, sometime around 2030. It uses the Tokamak principle invented in Russia (токамáк). Very expensive and late. But if it works, it will demonstrate much of what needs to be demonstrated to build a functional reactor. If all the planets align, that could be sometime in the 2050s or (more likely) later.

Stirring an Old Cold War Fire
By Gregory Clark
International Herald Tribune
Saturday, June 6, 1998
On Oct. 20, 1962, the world woke to find Chinese military divisions advancing into Indian-claimed and occupied territory south of the Himalayas.
.
“Chinese aggression,” screamed the headlines. It took more than 10 years, and the book “India’s China War,” by the former London Times correspondent in New Delhi, Neville Maxwell, for the world to discover that in fact India had attacked China rather than vice versa.
.
At the time I was a junior China desk officer in the Australian Department of External Affairs. One needed only to look at a map to discover that the hostilities had begun after India moved troops into the Thagla Ridge area, north of the official version of the McMahon Line, which India was claiming as its northernmost frontier.
.
In other words, India must have started the fighting. I made it my job to find out whether the British Foreign Office and the U.S. State Department agreed, which they did, reluctantly.
.
But in those Cold War days, these kinds of facts were irrelevant.
China was the enemy; India was a friend; the fighting had to be seen as further proof of Chinese Communist evil, even though Beijing, which had quite a good claim to the territory south of the McMahon Line, withdrew all its troops after defeating India.
.
All this is relevant to the India-Pakistan confrontation today.
China’s 1962 border war with India followed the 1959 Tibetan uprising (in which we now find that India and the CIA were involved).
.
That, combined with the 1958 confrontation with America in the Taiwan Strait and the growing dispute with the Soviet Union, was enough to convince Chinese leaders that they were being surrounded.
Alliance with Pakistan was the only way they could break the stranglehold, they reasoned.
.
But Beijing’s linking up with Pakistan simply added to India’s angst, which led to the Indian move to encourage the Bangladesh breakaway from Pakistan, which — with the Kashmir issue — led to the impasse in Indian-Pakistani relations and the mutual nuclear testing that we see today.
.
Worse, New Delhi has apparently decided that its nuclear tests allow it to revive its 1960s grudge against Beijing, just when Tibet again is becoming a sensitive global issue — yet another example of how what seemed like small Cold War exaggerations fester to create much larger problems decades later.
.
Whether tit-for-tat testing by Pakistan and India creates a risk of nuclear war is moot. As with the U.S.-Soviet standoff, fear of nuclear retaliation could well be the thing that stops generals on both sides from escalating confrontations. But that does not stop the confrontations. With the China-Tibet issue in the background, the India-Pakistan standoff looks nasty and dangerous.
.
The writer, a former Australian diplomat, contributed this comment to the International Herald Tribune.

Already London, Washington, and Canberra, AKA FUKUSA were coming out with strident condemnations of Chinese aggression against peaceful India. Many were already saying how this was the first stage in a Chinese thrust through to the Bay of Bengal. Canberra had even announced that it would supply weapons to help peace-loving India resist the Chinese aggressors.
I decided to send up a submission to my superiors saying that Indian claims of unprovoked aggression from China were not quite as strong as most believed, and that Canberra’s rushed offer to supply weapons should at least be conditional on a New Delhi promise to negotiate the frontier in a more serious manner.
My two immediate superiors accepted the submission, despite their normally rather hawkish views. But it came to a dead stop in the hands of the then division head, David Anderson, later to be Australia’s ambassador to Saigon.
In the margin he had scrawled: “I fail to see that it is not in the FUKUSA interest to see the Chinese and the Indians at each other’s throats.

Putin’s war on Ukrainian power grid reveals more than he’d like

On Oct. 10, Putin started a campaign against the Ukrainian power grid. He launched about $5 billion worth of long-range missiles in several strikes numbering 70-100 missiles each

A cheap Iranian Shaheed-136 drone will hardly kill a transformer. More likely, it will damage the coolant system, which will be fixed in a day or two. A missile can do the job, but it’s unlikely it will severely damage more than two, which cost anywhere from $3 million to $8 million apiece. An X-101 missile costs $13 million, an X-555 $7.5 million, a Kalibr $6.5 million. But the biggest problem for Russia isn’t the price of the missiles: It’s their replacement — it takes up to nine months to deliver one.

Before the war, Russia had stockpiled about 1,900 long-range high precision missiles (900 Iskanders, 500 Kalibres, 144-101 and 300 X-555), of which it has used about two-thirds. Before the sanctions kicked in, it was manufacturing high-precision missiles (X-101, Kalibres and 9M729) at a rate of around 100 per year, though that estimate perhaps should be revised upward.

Engine: MD-550 piston engine
Look here: https://www.militarydrones.org.cn/md-550-engine-price-p00583p1.html
“The MD550 engine is a model aircraft/drone engine developed by Limbach, Germany, Now, the MD550 engine are made in China”
“The Shahed 136 drone, which weighs more than 200 kg, uses the MD550 piston engine.”
So the engine design was made in a country that rewards innovation, then copied in a country that grew big on copying products without human rights and now this drone is assembled in Iran, a country without women’s rights. This drone is now used by Russia also against German supplied hardware in Ukraine.
Mysterious are God’s ways.

I see a lot of talk about the fusion energy “breakthrough.” Yes, it’s complete BS. A technical takedown here:
https://news.newenergytimes.net/2022/12/11/fusion-energy-breakthrough-scam/
As for the recent India-China border spat in Arunachal Pradesh, it’s worth mentioning that the territory once belonged to Tibet (the Brits, in their infinite colonial wisdom, gave it to India) and it’s the home of the monastery that will choose the next Dalai Lama once the current CIA employee dies.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tawang_Monastery
So yah, looks like the Chinese goofed this time (India had just rotated in a new division of troops so they luckily happened to outnumber the Chinese attackers), but it was deadly serious business, nonetheless.

So as to be expected within a few posts the entire discussion jumped into extreme positions. As long as they have so much success, is it any surprise that opponents of your views keep appearing?
All that is required is the self discipline to ignore the obvious taunts – yet none of you seem able to show it.
Of course there was no scheduling dispute that stopped the summit.
Quite honestly if the amerikan opponents of the amerikan blob’s activities have as little insight into what we foreigners think/believe as the proponents of it do then we’re all screwed.
Try living in a nation state that has to walk the fine line of amerika’s immature grabby demands and you may understand why both heads of state agreed to forgo a summit this year.
Or have you forgotten Imran Khan already? He was dismissed from his job for the crime of visiting Moscow, while it probably wouldn’t be quite as simple if Modi had flown to Moscow this year there would have been a great deal of trouble from blatant terrorism against ordinary indians to all of the Indian pols who have been bribed & blackmailed by amerika into being forced to adopt an anti-Modi stance.
Vlad saw it and understood why can’t other amerikans. I suspect that even now they still do not realise what a pain in the arse most people regard amerika as being.

Posted by: Forest | Dec 14 2022 9:11 utc | 121

Thing is, b is raising an issue which is not at all important. India will trade with Russia and vice-versa, and whether or not their two leaders have some kind of summit is unimportant. They don’t have, and won’t have, an alliance, and India needs friendly relations with Russia and the United States anyway.
The really important issue is not the substantive matter, but rather the way that the U.S. government is able to control its media to provide grotesque propaganda, and the complete ineptitude of those propagandists — although the U.S. public (like the public in my own country, for the most part) have been socialised into gulping lies down like so much fizzy drink (and bloat and get sick as a result)

There are now millions of ‘coconuts’ living happy lives in the Collective Waste as there were thousands on the subcontinent when independence was partially wrested from the Imperialists gnarly bloody hands. Even then the fake Indians were induced to preserve the ‘Interests’ of the Old Company’s.
Modi’s days are nearly done, JaiShankar is obviously moving to centre stage , Singh speaks seriously about the bullshit of sanctions , the few Indian talk shows that I have seen occasionally posted here in the West, show the stereotypical angry Indian railing against anything and everything witg the patriarchal attitudes of God Given ‘Truths’.
Whilst in Pakistan ‘our boy’ Imran is sidelined as Khan designated Nut gone rogue.
I guess Jinnah must be spinning in his tomb as the mahatmas vision takes a sensible step forward to realising that the ancient relationship with China and the EurAsian continent is the only sensible and reliable and SAFE way forward.
If only India/Pakistan had been able to overthrow the Empire with a bloody revolution as much as the mythical American one against the German King of England.
We may as a Collective humanity not wasted the last hundred years at keeping the Ancient Ambitions Alive.
The Word after all is what mattered, the Religious texts, the Propaganda Departments of State and their Commercial arms the Press Relations and Advertising Industries , their weapons factories the Culture materiel , Books,Films, Radio, TV, Magazines, Pop singers and ‘’News’ papers. Mostly owned and run by the ancient aristo scions, the modern day martial families choice of glory.
In short – all anonymous Spokespeople or their obvious flunkies in the media are the enemy of the collective humanity and the resources and environment of our planet.
Time to start naming and shaming them. If that doesn’t stop their jibber jabbering then time to sharpen the sword – the knot needs undoing!

Two points to the claim that Russia has threatened to use nuclear weapons:
– NATO has never disavowed first use. Putin has nullified any lingering question about the applicability of Soviet disavowals
– by annexing the Dombass as Russia, he extends the Russia nuclear umbrella into the current conflict, thus indeed making the nuclear threat over dusputed territory

But all of that isnt really happening, you know. For sure, China is winning Russia as a vassal by this but the rest of the world remains neutral. And China will not help with weapons, its got its own problems and can afford to see Russia collapse.
