@220 Tom UK “If these countries have no skin in the game, why are they not persuaded by Russia badgering them to support their position and vote against?”
What badgering would that be, Tom?
The Russians aren’t the party that is desperate for some propaganda talking-point, and show no sign that they can be bothered to play that pantomime game.
“By your logic, the answer is that the US has more diplomatic sway and power than Russia.”
And? So? An empty tin can rattles the loudest. Big whoopie.
“It may also tell us that most countries do not like the idea of a larger country annexing territory of a smaller country by force.”
It may. It may also mean that most countries can’t be bothered to stand up to the badgering from a bunch of neocon crazies, not when it is much easier on the ears to simply shrug the shoulders and mutter “Fine. Whatever”.
You are making a mountain out of a molehill. How very western of you.

As I understand things, the next step for blinker and spongebrain is to write a sternly worded letter to the editor of the Moscow Times or equivalent.

BTW,
Continuing on vaunted FUKUS ‘ethics’ in the battle field….
More gems from the ruse based empire.

“It is increasingly apparent that China and Russia want to shape a world consistent with their authoritarian values and in the process replace the free and open order that has enabled global security since World War II.”
The nation needs to leverage all elements of national power, . “The Department of Defense’s enduring mission is to provide combat ready military forces to deter war and reinforce America’s traditional tools of diplomacy.”
We cant go on fighting them with one arm tied behind our back….!

Exhibit A
*NS2
*Fallujah etc etc
*Terrorist attack on Russian./Chinese rail executives in Mali.

*C19
…….
Tip of an iceberg.
If this is their idea of ‘restraint’………..gawd help us when they get serious. !

hah yeah like I said Raygun’s Pentagon (at the time and due to his proximity to Bush) the Republicans were very close to the MIC and such), re-wrote the scripts on every subsequent Rambo flick. The first was intended as a critique on Vietnam policy.

https://awfulavalanche.wordpress.com/2022/10/13/ukraine-war-day-232-why-russia-needs-to-take-odessa/
Good piece. Why Russia needs to take Odessa. Excerpt from a minor section :
Why Snake Island Was Important After All
When the reporter mentioned Snake Island, I felt vindicated, although it brings me no joy. I believe I was one of the bloggers insisting on the importance of Snake Island. But after Russian troops withdrew from this strategic location (for very good military reasons, I have no doubt), I had to contend with other bloggers who were, like, “Oh, it’s just a tiny speck of rock, who cares?” Just like later, the same people were, like, “Oh, who cares if Russian troops give up a small town like Krasny Liman?” To be sure, I don’t want to be that blustery armchair general who curses out the troops for abandoning any piece of ground. It’s not me putting my neck out; and, like I said, I am sure the Russian generals had a very good reason for making that crucial decision to withdraw from Snake Island. It’s just that I want people to look reality straight in the eye, Like Ibsen’s Gregers Werle, I want them to admit when a defeat is actually a defeat. As Sun Tzu either said, or should have said: “He who cannot see a defeat, cannot pull off a victory either.” See, if the Russian navy still had an outpost on Snake Island, they would have noticed this “grain boat” heading into the mouth of the Beautiful Blue Danube.

I’m a low information witness to all this but back in March I forecast Russia taking Odessa both for security and cultural reasons. To me the big question has always been regarding Kiev: to take, to regime change or to depopulate. In any case I suspect the desire viz Odessa is to take it by referendum without destructive kinetics. We’ll soon find out for I agree with this author: RF has to take Odessa at some point.

thread:

Abdul Hakim, the ex head of a major Chechen salafi jihadist group, has just entered Ukraine to fight against Russia
This was picked up by MEMRI, an established DC Think Tank, so it definitely deserves attention.
During the US dirty war in Syria, Hakim led Ajnad al-Kavkaz, a Chechen mercenary group that the intercept said was “the largest of the Muslim factions from the former Soviet Union fighting in Syria.” with over 100 members at one point.
It should be basic knowledge by now that the US funded and armed many Al-Qaeda linked jihadi groups in an effort to destroy the Syrian regime.
The US National Security advisor in Syria even wrote that “Al Qaeda is on our side”
Of course the US history of using jihadi groups for geopolitical goals is nothing new.
