The US accepts Ukrainian refugees. If a Ukrainian shows up at the Mexico-US border, they are welcomed as a refugee and admitted to the US. If you are from Haiti and show up at the Mexican border you are deported back to Haiti. The place is now a warzone. There are marauding armed groups blocking the port in Haiti. Without fuel, hospitals have stopped functioning and water is cut off. Why would the US deport one group back to a war zone but accept another as refugees? There is a simple explanation. I think, though, that the emphasis on legal boundaries of state action, which is indeed what Russia stresses, is a little off point.
Russia’s main, and very legitimate, complaint has been that they have not been allowed entry into a European security system. The way the US engineered this exclusion in the period after the Soviet collapse by militarizing the conflict in the former Yugoslavia should be something you bang on just as much as you bang on the AFU artillery barrages in the days before the beginning of the SMO.
A sketch: France and Germany were interested in including Russia in an OSCE-based security organization that would have seriously undercut the US dominance in European security arrangements via NATO. The US stalled on that, while at the same time encouraging resistance by Moslem groups to an OSCE-based solution to Yugoslav tensions. The US jumped in and supported Bosnian independence, knowing full well that Serbia would not accept it owing to the number of Serbs in Bosnia. That led to militarization, with Germany and France deferring to what the US already had in its arsenal. Russia was kept at the margins, and the opportunity slipped away.
The point is that for laws to be effective it is necessary to have mutual recognition between the parties upholding the law. Without a security agreement, things slip back into a pre-Westphalia state. Without a security arrangement, there is little basis for objecting to the kind of destabilizing buildup of forces NATO pursued in Ukraine prior to 2/24. The way the US in the 1990s cut off promising developments should be brought up repeatedly. It never is, not even here.

A week later, Allied Enterprises was dissolved. Parsons received only a $2,900 promissory note from Hubbard and returned home “shattered”. He had to sell his mansion to developers soon afterwards to recoup his losses.[88]

Hubbard’s fellow writers were well aware of what had happened between him and Parsons. L. Sprague de Camp wrote to Isaac Asimov on August 27, 1946, to tell him:

Hubbard agreed to divorce Polly in June that year and the marriage was dissolved shortly afterwards, with Polly given custody of the children.[90]
During this period, Hubbard authored a document which has been called the “Affirmations” (also referred to as the “Admissions”). They consist of a series of statements by and addressed to Hubbard, relating to various physical, sexual, psychological and social issues that he was encountering in his life. The Affirmations appear to have been intended to be used as a form of self-hypnosis with the intention of resolving the author’s psychological problems and instilling a positive mental attitude. Means more of Ukraine will be lost to RF in near future and tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers will soon die once the RF offensive is launched after the ground has frozen in early November.
Of course if Ukraine stopped shelling Donetsk and NATO stopped supplying more weapons and money there might be an end to it. But since all the people who voted against Russia today are supporting those helping Ukraine to attack the RF and kill Russians, negotiations are not possible with such mutually ‘agreement-incapable’ parties and so…. the killing will continue.
The UN is finished. Maybe it can be reformed but, as with the USG, probably best just to let it die and the constitute something else later once the geopolitical tectonic plate shifts have settled. Probably in 5-10 years.
