The massive blow to the Ukrainian infrastructure testifies to a radical change in the nature of the SMO.
However, it is obvious that what happened is not only a military move. It is also an argument for stimulating the negotiation process. About which statements are increasingly being made in the United States, and in Europe, and in Turkey.
After such a large-scale attack, the patrons of the Kyiv regime will not be able to pretend that nothing happened. The choice, by and large, of two alternatives. Either détente or support escalation.
It is getting harder and harder for the West to raise the stakes. To hand over back – the concepts of prestige interfere. According to the laws of the information society, it is unacceptable to delay the pause. Therefore, you won’t have to wait long for a response.

“According to Georgian intelligence, and several Russian media reports, parts of the regular (non-peacekeeping) Russian Army had already moved to South Ossetian territory through the Roki Tunnel before the Georgian military action.
Russia accused Georgia of “aggression against South Ossetia”, and launched a large-scale land, air, and sea invasion of Georgia with the pretext of a “peace enforcement operation” on 8 August 2008. Russian airstrikes against targets within Georgia were also launched.” Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Ossetia#1989–2008, accessed 10/10/22.

Igor Girkin aka Strelkov:
“Numerous attacks on critical infrastructure of the so-called “Ukraine” will definitely have an effect and will affect the state of the front and the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a whole. But the effect will be by no means instantaneous and will begin to affect not earlier than in a few weeks (and then only on the condition that the strikes continue and systematically knock out the surviving objects).
And now the enemy, on the contrary, will be forced, on the contrary, to hurry with offensive operations – as long as his rear infrastructure remains capable. I continue to predict the enemy’s attempts to carry out 1-2 large-scale offensive operations by the end of October.
Now every day without an enemy offensive is “working for us,” since the flow of mobilized people arriving at the front is growing every day, and the time remaining before the preparation and commissioning of urgently formed reserves is shortening. The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also understands all this very well.” – Strelkov’s telegram channel

Yes, that exactly what the Ukrainian govt under Turchinov and the Poroshenko shouldnt have done in 2014 and there after. By sending tank to suppress the uprising in Donbass, they put the conflict on a warpath. Instead, they should have held a dialogue with the Russian speakers in Ukraine and build Ukraine as a bridge between Russia and the West. At the very least, they should have committed to the Minsk2 process in good faith. Instead they kept killing those kids in Donbass, even under Big Z. You are right, killing kids is not the best route to world peace.

Pepe Escobar:

Attacks on critical infrastructure throughout Ukraine continue – what is known at the moment
The destruction of the Ukrainian energy system continues – thermal power plants, substations and other infrastructure facilities and buildings of law enforcement agencies have come under attack. Electricity has already been cut off in Lviv, Ternopil, Kyiv, Kharkov, Sumy, Dnipro and other cities.
The liquidation of 11 important infrastructure facilities in 8 regions and Kyiv is officially announced.
In total, more than 200 shells were fired.
There are reports of massive missile launches from the Caspian and the Black Sea, so we should expect a complete blackout in Ukraine soon.
[🤡]There are already demands to remove the top military leadership of Ukraine and specifically calls for the resignation of Zaluzhny.

@318 Arch Bungle
Thank you for emphasising my point.
@319 Night Tripper
It has nothing to do with fairness. War is never fair. Random killing of civilians is dumb and counter productive. The West will send more air defences to Ukraine, it hardens civilian (and Western) resolve and the military position in key areas is unchanged.
The Ukrainians attack a military supply bridge. The Russians attack a playground in a park. This negates the damage done to Ukrainian infrastructure as the media focus is directed towards the civilian attacks and Ukraine picks up more aid and weapons.
It is obvious that Russia cannot destroy Ukraine or its people, so all Russia does is add generations of enmity towards it from Finland, the Baltic States, Poland and Ukraine itself. You also have three bordering states declining to take part in scheduled military exercises with Russia and signs that China is starting to cosy up to the US because of how badly Russia has screwed up.

So why were the Ukrs terror bombing Donbass for eight years then, to harden them up? No to enable their version of Operation Storm when the time came.
Hitting critical may harden some people, but their indignation is pointless if they cant do anything with it. You can ask the Palestinians about that.
No electricity = no logistics, worse communications & puts Kiev’s ”winning” into perspective.
Also people will flee the cities buggering Ukraines economy worse than it is already.

And now about the consequences.
The defeat of the largest thermal power plant in Krivoy Rog means the cessation of work of the most important metallurgical plant “Kryvorizhstal”.
A geopolitical feature is the production of unique alloy steels, which are vital for France to repair nuclear power plants that are on the verge of closing due to corrosion.
The interests of Canada are also affected – the Black Iron company has been planning the development of the Shimanovskoye field since 2020.
As well as the pro-British part of the Indian elite – the plant belongs to the Arcelor Mittal group of companies.

Posted by: Night Tripper | Oct 10 2022 10:07 utc | 344

It seems that the first wave, which started around 3.00 local, was over 80 missiles most of them Kalibre and Kh-101. Also there is no let up, they are still arriving.
Major target the combined heat and power power stations so most large cities will be rather cold this winter. This probably means another flood of refugees west which I doubt will be welcomed at the borders this time. Maybe armed rejection as the EU is short of power and energy as well.
Apparently a quote from the new Russian military leader Army General S.V. Surovikin:
“For the enemies of Russia, the morning does not start with coffee.”
It certainly didn’t today. Not in Brussels/London/Berlin/Paris or Washington either, where there were no doubt many rudely awakened and dragged out of bed in the middle of the night.
The attack on the Kersh bridge certainly lit the blue touch paper. It is clear that Surovikin is a different kind of General. After this is over he will be a shoe in to, about to retire, Gerasimaov’s job.

❗Why did Lukashenko decide to support Russia ?
Belarusian mercenaries are being trained in Ukraine to seize power in Minsk
Earlier, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced the deployment of a joint regional group of troops with Russia. Lukashenka noted that the day before, through unofficial channels, Minsk was warned about a strike on Belarus from the territory of Ukraine.
Indeed, Belarus has serious reasons for concern. According to “Strana V”, units of Belarusian nationalists are being trained in Ukraine to seize power in the country.
“The Belarusian group is being formed in Kyiv and the Zhytomyr region and is closely connected with Azov (banned in the Russian Federation),” the source of the channel said.
According to him, the informal leader of the organization is the Belarusian militant Yankee (Igor Yankov). This is an active participant in the protests in Belarus in 2020. He is directly linked to Ukrainian fighters from Azov.
“The goal of the planned coup will be to create a buffer zone from Belarus, and the coup itself will have a military character. Demoralization of the army and a strike by motivated mercenaries, the scenario will be similar to the Ukrainian Maidan,” the source said.
We are waiting for the full entry of Belarus into the NWO. There is no other choice.

Tom,
you are a prime example of many Westerners who think perception (=media spin) is everything. If you think twitter feeds matter, you are indeed lost. In the real world, perception only helps you so much, until it doesnt. If you think ahead, you dont even try to clash with an opponent that is able to shatter your perception dominance. Smart ppl accomodate them. Interestingly, everybody knows this from being a kid. The parents always wielded the bigger stick and you had to accomodate their demands.

”… so all Russia does is add generations of enmity towards it from Finland, the Baltic States, Poland and Ukraine itself.”
Animosity has lived for generations across Europe … see mentors Vicky Nuland-Nee Nudelman, Madeleine Albright, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Donald Rumsfeld, etc. The European diaspora of emigrants living in America are a strong lobby by US Congress and the public for interventions. The 2014 coup d’état has aggravated the situation and was an opening salvo of this war. The 2008 NATO Summit in Bucharest decided to offer membership to Georgia and Ukraine and set out a mission of war the people of Russia and Ukraine are suffering from today. Crossing red lines. The rest is NATO war rhetoric and propaganda led by US-UK-Poland-Baltic States.
The European Union is in self-destruct mode which will last for at least a decade. America and Canada will be the laughing victors of this debacle.

It is obvious that Russia cannot destroy Ukraine or its people,

What makes you think that was the objective?

so all Russia does is add generations of enmity towards it from Finland, the Baltic States, Poland and Ukraine itself.

That bus left the station many decades ago.
The best Russia can do now is defend itself.
The hand of peace was offered a dozen times.
But it was smacked away a dozen more times.
Sadly, the only thing left is the iron fist.

If all Russia has is an iron fist then it is doomed to isolation and economic destitution. Basically, a larger North Korea.
Also, at some point Russians are going to have to wonder why everyone around them loathes them and perhaps reflect that it may have something to do with them and their behaviour? We could all do with some self-reflection from time to time.

Yes. Putin, not Russia. From the Ukrainian perspective, Putin launched a war of aggression and annexed territory so they will not negotiate with Putin. What do you expect then to say or do? Like it or not, Ukrainians have agency in this war. Ukrainians decide on what basis they will negotiate. Putin does not control this situation, nor is he in a position to dictate.

Posted by: Tom UK | Oct 10 2022 11:13 utc | 372

It looks to be over for now. In Putin’s announcement this morning he made it clear that it was in response to Ukraine’s “terrorists actions”. In particular and this seems to be news, he said that Ukraine had attempted attacks on the Turk Stream/South Stream pipeline as well as on the Kursk NPP.
If they try anything else “attacking Russia in Russia” there will be another “harsh” response. Notwithstanding Russia’s ability to turn more washing machines into Kalibres!!!
So it looks to be now back to the slow and careful military build up to the main event in a few weeks. With chunks of the Internet down and the Russians apparently getting a handle on Skynet it will be increasingly difficult for Ukrainian planners and tactical operations.

Vladimir Putin held an extraordinary meeting with the Security Council. The Russian leader openly compared the Kyiv regime to international terrorists.
– Yesterday, the chairman of the Investigative Committee reported on the first results of the investigation into the sabotage on the Crimean bridge. Expertise data say that the explosion on October 8 is a terrorist attack. Critical civilian infrastructure has been affected, the president said.
– Kyiv has been using terrorist methods for a long time: murders of politicians, scientists, journalists. The shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is an act of nuclear terrorism. The special services of Ukraine carried out three terrorist attacks against the Kursk nuclear power plant, blew up high-voltage power lines. The damage was quickly eliminated, no serious consequences were allowed. But there have been other attempts to damage infrastructure, such as the Turkish Stream gas pipeline. Representatives of Russia are not allowed to investigate the causes of explosions in the Baltic Sea, – the head of the country listed.
Putin said that “by its actions, the Kyiv regime has actually placed itself on the same level as international terrorists.”
The Russian leader told how we responded to the blowing up of the Crimean bridge.
– This morning, a massive air, sea and land-based high-precision long-range weapon delivered a massive strike on energy, military command and communications facilities of Ukraine.
– If attempts to carry out terrorist attacks on our territory continue, Russia’s responses will be tough and in scale will correspond to the level of threats posed by Russia. No one should have any doubts about this, the president threatened.

In international relations, might makes right. How many Empires faded in the history of humankind due to an unwillingness to accomodate interests of opposing and stronger Empires? The Melian Dialogue is a classic example. Athens crushed Melos simply because it could. BTW, that has been happening with Western Empires and the rest of the World for centuries, because we could. Ukrainians do have agency as long as they accomodate the interests of their much bigger neighbour. They willing took on the position of a wrecking ball the US wanted them to be and now pay the price. Its so sad, because all of this could have been avoided, if the US would have been willing to accomodate Russian interests (shut the door for Ukraine in NATO).

Yes. Putin, not Russia.

Wrong. This was a consensus decision.

From the Ukrainian perspective,

Are you Ukrainian? What gives you the right to speak on their behalf?

Putin launched a war of aggression

Wrong. It was Ukraine that attacked Donbas first.

and annexed territory so they will not negotiate with Putin.

You’re contradicting yourself again. Are you a schizo?

Ukrainians have agency in this war.

So do the Russians. It comes down to who has the greater agency.
Since Ukraine is a puppet NATO state, it’s clear they have less.

Ukrainians decide on what basis they will negotiate.

False. Victoria Nuland will decide that.

Putin does not control this situation,

You’re contradicting yourself again. I thought you said “Putin, not Russia”.
Which is it?

nor is he in a position to dictate.

So he is not a dictator after all? Nice to know.

I remeber December 2021 well enough: NATO’s answer to Russian demands to formally say no to Ukrainian membership was: We cannot do that, we have an open door policy. That was the answer. The US could have made a deal on that with Russia and everything else would have been avoided.

Thanks for the pictures, closeup of the road deck from nearer to the point of explosion shows pockmarks, presumably from bits of truck turned into shrapnel. I hadn’t seen this type of damage in other images so far.
Trigger from a vehicle in front makes sense as there is more chance of being able to drive away. A telescope from the shoreline and a longer range transmitted would also work (hard to jam a simple trigger frequency that operates so quickly). Unlikely alternatives: texting GPS coordinates to a bomb trigger device (assumes a stationary target) or planting a radio beacon on the target train (some RF missiles can apparently home in on planted beacons).

None of this would have happened if Ukraine, EU and US honored their signatures under Minsk II. But in all of their supremacist wisdom they chose not to, against all attempts to solve this diplomatically and in a civilized fashion by Russia. The “snow niggers” were not given any credence.
Further, all this would have been avoided had the US, UK and the EU chosen to accept the negotiations in March. But, again, in all their supremacist wisdom them chose not to.
There will be a third opportunity soon. It will go on until EU, UK and US elite abandon their supremacist ways.

A simple GPS-controlled trigger would do. Truck crosses certain coordinates—the trigger activates. The presence of the fuel train, in my opinion, was a coincidence. Clearly, they wanted to align the operation with Putin’s birthday (but couldn’t, because the driver decided to take a nap), not with the train.
I’d like to remind the bar again that the truck driver wasn’t in on the plan. A completely innocent person that had nothing to do with anything was deliberately sacrificed to commit this act of sabotage. You may call the family from St. Petersburg that was driving in a Cadillac “collateral damage”, but Makhir Yusubov was not there accidentally—the plotters have deliberately sacrificed him, a random man they knew nothing about.

No, it would not have settled the matter. Ukraine was not getting into NATO. NATO was not going to allow Ukraine into NATO while Ukraine was involved in a conflict with Russia and in dispute over territory. Allowing Ukraine in after 2014 would have made the Donbas conflict a NATO conflict and there was no way they wanted involvement in that.
Ukraine cannot get into NATO now for the same reasons. NATO currently only supplies limited range of weapons, it even limits HIMARS ordinance. It will not supply planes, or the latest tanks. NATO does not want an open conflict with Russia, nor does Russia want one with NATO.
The NATO argument is a false one and has no credibility. I mean, Putin went on TV to talk about Russian destiny and Russia’s historic lands. The invasion of Ukraine was about Russian ambitions and nationalism.

Perhaps you are, like your moniker, young and naive; totally mistaken in the idea that you are “independent”. You obviously have either no actual knowledge due to your youth and indoctrinations or you are just ingenuous with your “fractured history” from Western Wikipedia.
Like any juvenile, the reasoning process is poorly developed and the tactics of two year olds sometimes hold sway long past their normal development range. Selective listening becomes highly selective highlighting in their choices for verbal interchanges and they strive most diligently to bolster their internalized distortions of reality. Just another bit of evidence they choose to ignore of them being far from “independent”, like Cережа wanted to be seen.

I agree with all the rest but the length of the bridge vs the length of the freight train …. sure, it could be coincidence, perhaps the RF investigation will clarifying the trigger, but I wouldn’t make that assumption on the limited information we have right now and the very small chance of setting off an explosion anywhere on that bridge and just happening to also hit a freight train.

Let’s assume the reverse: that Putin’s birthday was a coincidence, and that the plotters were targeting the fuel train. Let’s further assume that Russian Railways have a regular schedule for fuel trains to Crimea, and that the plotters somehow got ahold of that schedule, making the operation possible. Given that the truck driver wasn’t in on the plan, how would they ensure that he would drive onto the bridge when the fuel train was there—not 10 minutes earlier, not 10 minutes later? Such precise timing would only be possible with a suicide driver, but we know he wasn’t one. Hence my thinking the presence of the fuel train was a coincidence.

Ukraine sends a message to African countries, says RT
https://www.rt.com/news/564432-kuleba-africa-vote-ukraine/
I wonder how that will be received. You know, Canada’s Trudeau got one of those phone calls today too, but from Zelensky himself. I admit, I haven’t been following this very closely, but he’s been so totally ingratiating to Zelensky and the Kievites… until now, I thought (maybe because it’s Canadian Thanksgiving and he’s supposed to be eating turkey not talking it, I don’t know). Today I thought he sounded a bit mad. And I wondered what might come of that. There was a summoning of the Russian ambassador.
I checked La Presse. If something is going to be publicized, it’s as likely to show up there as anywhere I believe (perhaps falsely). And I found this report on Mexico’s Lopez Obrador and some arrangement they have with Russia.
