Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
September 9, 2022
The Izium ‘Counteroffensive’ Success / Disaster

"It's a disaster," says Dima of the Military Summary channel.

I agree. The question now is: For whom?

Here is the map of the Izium region in the northeast of Ukraine on September 4.

bigger

In the middle we can see the Oskol river flowing north to south. Along it run railway tracks and roads that connect Izium region at the bottom of the map with Urazovo in Russia (further north, not on the map).

Here is the situation in the same area on the morning of September 9.

bigger

The Ukrainian forces have broken through the Russian positions on a wide front and in remarkable depth.

The above maps are from the Ukraine friendly site LiveUAmap. On the Russian side's map, as provided by Dima in his latest video, the Ukrainians are shown even further east and have reached the Oskol river.

bigger

This is latest Rybar version of the map which confirms that the Ukrainian side has at least in part reached the river. They took the town of Senkovo on the western side of it.

bigger
(German version as the English one does not load correctly.)

Izium, Lyman and several other important positions along the Izium front are now in imminent danger of losing their main supply route.

How could this happen?

Well, I am not in the Russian high command and have no idea of the how and why.

But what we know is that there were mostly conscripted men of the Luhansk Peoples Republic at the frontline when this episode started. The troops that held the town of Balakleya for two days where Russian National Guard forces. Those are militarized police units, not real armed forces. The Russian military had to send army forces to evacuate them.

Apparently the whole Russian front in that area was very thin and had too little artillery support. The Ukrainians moved extremely fast skipping towns and just blocking off local resistance to move on. They had a very significant number of tanks and armored transport as well as long range artillery support by several HIMARS systems. Many of the units must also have had night vision equipment as they did not stop even after sunset. There are also reports of strong foreign elements but those are hard to verify.

The LPR forces and whatever else was in the area had no chance. They were killed or captured or moved out.

The Russian side seems to have had little information about the size of the attack. The forces in the area were too few and too light. There should have been way more forces to block the Ukrainian move much earlier.

Then again – I do not know what plans the Russian military has had or might have. We might still see surprises.

Armored Russian reinforcements are now coming in from the north from the northern Kharkov region as well as from the east through Svatove. But they will still need some time to reach the front lines and to set up for battle.

The best countermove is likely to move the battle group seen in Svatove down to Izium and then up northwest and the group from the north southward in an attempt to pincer and envelope the Ukrainian forces.

Going this deep and this fast makes the attacking Ukrainian troops vulnerable. They will need some time to consolidate and to move up their artillery. Their supplies will have to come from Andivka on the left of the map and from Chuhuiv on the upper left. That are some 75 kilometer or 45 miles one way distances.

The Russian missile forces can interdict those routes by destroying the bridges along the way. They should do this as soon as possible. Andivka itself is surrounded by a river in the south, west and north. The handful of bridges over the river should also be dropped to cut the town off.

Ukrainian forces south of Izium and Lyman try to cross the Siversky Donets river to attack those cities from another direction. The idea is likely to bind the Russian forces there and to not let them move north to counter the upper Ukrainian strike.

There may be some ingenious Russian plan behind this to drag the Ukrainian forces in to then destroy them in place. But I do not see any evidence for that.

Heads will have to roll for this disaster.

I’ve noticed the same lack of enthusiasm on facebook too. Not so many blue and yellow flags. Not sure why. I guess people got caught up in the initial excitement but it went on too long and they got bored.

The frequency with which the Current Thing changes would give you whiplash.
I remember the AIDS ribbon became really popular in the 90’s, and something seemed weirdly… performative about it. We didn’t know about “virtue signaling” yet. It was an innocent time. But anyway, it’s been all downhill from there.
The British public is no longer very interested in Ukraine, though there are of course a few frothing holdouts who seem to take personal offence at the existence of Russia.
Not that public opinion matters much until the peasants are sufficiently enwrathened to physically revolt, but if NATO is heading in an escalatory direction and wants to carry public opinion, they’ll need to blame another novichok attack on Russia, or something like that.

here’s what i see when i look at the the map of the ukie “breakthrough”: y’know in action/mob/etc movies when a bunch of armed goons go into an alley and then look up to realize other goons with guns are looking down at them and they’re fish in a barrel? sin city comes to mind. the deeper they go, the more they become that scene.
they found a weak spot and exploited it. it’s like a new “0 day” that the russians are about to patch with air power and heavy shelling. all the diaper shitting here and in other comment sections is odd and premature. does a sports team who ends the game with a 245 to 5 score in their favor “lose”?

Only question is whether the Ukrainians will stop at their old borders, or press for Crimea, Belgorod and Rostov?

Thank you Peter in AB, you gave me a good laugh.
What indeed is to stop mighty Ukraine, after defeating a weakened Russia, from turning its ambitions West? Marching in triumph into Warsaw, Berlin, Paris (literally anything would be an improvement in Paris)? Then launching its fleets north, taking over Dublin, Dundee, Humberside? Panic!
By 2030, the whole of planet Earth and mole people will be Ukrainian. By the year 2525 (if man is still alive) this entire quadrant of the galaxy will be Ukrainian, controlled by the infernal Gul Zelensky!

It’s really simple, Russia is WEAK. Dangerously so, compared to its posture and ambitions. A demotion to the status of semi-regional power seems invevitable.
There will be more spectacular humiliations than this fiasco, that seems certain.
Only question is whether the Ukrainians will stop at their old borders, or press for Crimea, Belgorod and Rostov?

I just talked to a woman in her late 20s who came back from Dnipro region. I was surprised to learn that she doesn’t believe in a civil war in Ukraine. For her it’s the war with Russia since the beginning. She also told me that everyone wants to fight. And I’m talking about a Russian speaking Ukranian who was born in a post Soviet time and who’s own sister has Russian citizenship. The kind of brainwashing she has quite amazed me. They will fight until the last Ukranian because for last 30 years they’ve been told Russia is a hell on Earth. Whole scale operation is needed to stop this hatred.
After 6 months of SMO it is clear for Russian government that more Russians support it which gives a green light to Putin. This kind of situation in Kharkov region clearly says there is not enough manpower in the army. There’s a high possibility the war can be declared especially that some Ukrainians in Kharkov region already got Russian passports. Some tg channels openly warned about Balakleya a week ago. Whether it’s a complete failure of Russian intelligence or simply a way to justify declaring war and stopping this circus called SMO we’ll see very soon. Some media in Russia was talking exactly about this which wasn’t that typical though they expected that referendums will take place in September. The referendums are to be postponed until November as for now though Aksenov, the governor of Crimea, said there’s no need to have them. Some big changes in Russian government are also discussed by media. This all points at some big changes we are most probably to witness.

A lot of slow learners on this board. For months pontificating that ” the war is already over, Ukraine lost”, and still barking up that same tree. It is sad. But just say the words “cauldron” and “ukronazi” 10 times each and then make the sign of the hammer and sickle and chant “smo” slowly 20 times, and all is well. Stalin himself will hear you and grant you victory, same as in the Great Patriotic SMO.
But seriously,Putin, who is a good guy, but truly a man addicted to half measures, has said many times that the war is against NATO. Try to understand that. Stop comforting yourselves by pretending that your “smo” or whatever you prefer to call it, is simply against Ukraine. Try to listen to Putin, who clearly says NATO is making war against Russia.
The current events are nothing much. Russia could have stopped it. Why they didn’t I don’t know. But sometimes bad news leads to firmer measures. Some losses in the field might help Putin politically if he chooses to mobilize the nation for war.
The war games this week in the pacific, with China and India participating, were the real news. This is a global war. Ukraine is but a flashpoint.

They are wasting lives to pull in more money because in their minds their soldiers lives are expendable as they are not superior beings. $300,000,000,000 in income from the West divided by 30,000 casualties is a good return on investment in their minds.
They do not have to pay any premiums on their insurance policy from the West. All they have to do is show “good will” by making some progress.

I read that 10-50K forces on the UAF side are involved in this push and that perhaps Russia is directing them into a forested area where their destruction will cause less collateral damage. What I keep waiting to see demonstrated is the ability with new Russian missiles to obliterate large masses of military with one or a few shots….a bit of Shock-and-Awe to make NATO nations wonder what might happen on their soil if challenged and would make lots of the 101st chairborne division here happy.

Haha spot on about the blue/yellow flags. Ppl get tired and bored. And sometimes dissapointed. It reminds me of the Lance Armstrong yellow bands years ago. Everyone was wearing them to support cancer and Lance who was a Multi Tour De France Champion despite him being a cancer victim.
Even I wore one for a time to show support because my girlfriends dad had cancer at the time.
Turns out American Lance was a steroids filled cheater. Got all his medals taken away. So everyone threw the bands away and forgot it ever happened. Most likely what will also happen tis time with the yellow/blue flags.

The Balfour declaration was a century ago. Very many strands went into that decision, one of which, surprisingly, was the anti-semitism then building up in England.

Why do you anglos always see points and almost never lines?
The Balfour declaration was a starting point on an unbroken line which to this days results in the maintenance of what was a British colonial outpost in the middle east by a mix of Ukrainian, Russian and European caretakers.
The collusion between the British government and the colonial occupation of Palestine to this very day is a fact. You see it every day in the British government support for israel and willingness to turn a blind eye to Zionist atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
Above all, the presence of a European outpost in the middle east repeats a common pattern used by colonial powers to exert influence in a region.
It’s obviously not a conspiracy theory.
So let’s dispense with this nonsense that there is no Anglo Zionist conspiracy, ok?
It was a fact 100 years ago. It is a fact today.

I am disgusted by the way that the US is dealing with this war. We use maximum propaganda every chance we get, with a lot of our stories being complete lies. The difference between the lies we are telling now as compared to the ones we told about Iraq 2 decades ago is that those lies destroyed Iraq and lots of Iraqi lives, but took about 7 years for them to really hurt the US economy in 2008.
Today’s lies are majorly damaging the European economy today, and are hurting the US economy in a smaller way but still a very noticeable way. It does not help that our economy is intrinsically much weaker now than it was in 2000.
The US-Russia war in Ukraine, with Western Ukrainians and Eastern Ukrainians doing most of the actual fighting, is almost a sideshow due to the fact that Russia has successfully gotten China to be on their side completely, and India is leaning more strongly towards Russia than I ever would have thought possible. Both China and India brag about making trades with Russia in currencies that do not include the dollar or Euro. This is a very significant development.
I really believed that we would have no problems in uniting most of the whole world against Russia. What has happened instead is that most of the world united with Russia instead. Not exactly against us. But most certainly not with us. The Summit of the Americas showed that the US does not even have Latin America behind us.
The current Ukrainian offensives, which seem like they will likely fail miserably once the dust settles, are just the US excuse to escalate the commitment we make to Ukraine, and is a clear announcement to the world that we are ‘in it to win it’ – whatever it costs. We will likely pay the costs – I suspect we will not get the win though.

Posted by: Woke American | Sep 10 2022 1:24 utc | 426

A very good column by Doctorow today about the new round of escalation by the United States. We are coming very close to an all out war in which the victims are likely, largely to be Europeans. And they won’t be suffering from hypothermia, heating costs will be the least of their worries. (apologies of this link has already been posted.)
“…I am in mourning as well, but for a very different reason: the gathering in the Ramstein air base in Germany yesterday reshuffled the deck on Western military and financial assistance to Ukraine, raising contributions to the ongoing holy crusade against Russia from still more nations and adding new, still more advanced precision strike weapons to the mix of deliveries to Kiev. It was an open summons to the Kremlin to escalate in turn, as were the test firing the same day of a new intercontinental rocket, the Minuteman III, from Vandenberg air base in California and the unannounced visit to Kiev yesterday of not only Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was featured in Western media accounts, but also other top officials of the Biden administration. The most notorious member of this delegation was surely Blinken’s deputy, Victoria Nuland, who had stage managed the February 2014 coup that put in power in Kiev the Russia-hating regime that Zelensky now heads.
” The Russians may be compelled to take the bait due to the course of military action on the ground. As now becomes clear, they have just suffered some losses in very heavy ground and artillery fighting these past few days around Kharkov. The Ukrainian gains were facilitated by the advanced weaponry recently arrived from NATO countries, by the targeting data they are receiving from the U.S. and from off-stage tactical direction from NATO officers. By ‘take the bait,’ I mean the Russians may escalate to all out war on Ukraine. This question figured prominently in yesterday’s major news and political talk show programs of Russian state television. I will go into these matters in some detail below….”

Shoulder fired portable Manpad missiles have a detection range of about 10 km (6 miles) and an engagement range of about 6 km (4 miles). If they keep their distance and are flying over generally RU controlled air space, they can drop off troops with little danger.

So many so wrong about so much. First and foremost this is a civil war with Ukrainians on both sides doing most of the dying. Russia provides air and artillery support and Nato does the same. Russia has not changed military doctrine by attacking with a 1 to 3 numerical disadvantage but is defending its new border, the Cresent of occupied Ukraine with the Ukrainians as the attackers with the 3 to 1 advantage as dictated by military doctrine. Russia does not want the rest of Ukraine and is content to assimilate what it is holding which is why there is no movement in the line. The real war will begin when the west plays to its strength, air power and challenges Russia’s no fly zone over Ukraine.

Yes, Peter, a VERY curious way for going about victory. Like a previous victory when UKRAINIAN FORCES MADE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE RUSSIAN BORDER. A day later, maybe two?, the news from the Russian side was that these forces expanded along the border, and then were taken care of. This is how Russia wins its battles.
The US has a very effective and capable surveillance system. We gathered a large number of Ukrainian forces in a central location near the front, which Russia was aware of. We presumably used our surveillance system to figure out just where the Russian weakest spot was. Russia knew we would attack, but not where. There was no way they could defend against this everywhere.
So they held back forces in reserve, we launched our offensive, and initially it was a HUGE success, just like the Ukrainians that made it to the border.
And now Russia is sending its reserve forces to deal with this attack. A fairly large reserve force from what I can tell. My bet is that the Ukrainian forces in their newly taken land will suffer the same fate as the ones that previously made it to the Russian border. Even if we somehow get a victory in this battle – it won’t really be that significant other than accelerating the pace of our aid flowing to Ukraine over the next few months. If we DO win this battle – it means the next phase of the war will be closer to Russia and its supply lines and further away from ours.

Let’s see if I understand…the ukes have sprung two offensives backed by the wealthy nuclear armed NATO nations’ cash, matériels, intelligence including surveillance from near earth orbit, AWACS and HUMINT, employing the use of what are probably the last of their professional military reserves and with no air cover and scant arty cover, in the process clearly failing in one attempt, losing 1200 troops and twenty fighting vehicles from their dwindling supply, and possibly succeeding however briefly in the other, if it is not simply another trap.
And what? This is expected to turn the tide of the conflict? Lima Oscar Lima

What is the tactical advantage of setting a trap for your enemy by donating most of your ammo, armour, and specialty equipment like your most sophisticated AA and radars, and watching them blow the bridges behind you?

Have you established that the Russians have donated ‘most of their armour …’?
The Russians had hardly any forces in the area, mostly DPR and Roskgvardia.
Whose bridges are being blown up? Not Russian bridges.
And blowing up your own bridges cuts both ways …

The Russians have a curious way of going about victory.

You have a curious way of going about critical thinking.

Reply to 419. You’re misinformed. US are global thugs that no one will stop, left Russia for dead in 1990s and laughed about it. US cronies plundered fragile, newly independent Russia, caused famine and economic genocide. Bill Clinton admin. officials spoke of “stuffing shit down Boris [Yeltsin] throat,” gleefully taking pleasure in ordering him to wreck his country’s economy. “30% unemployment, rampant inflation, pensions gone, savings gone….According to Naomi Klein’s 2007 book “The Shock Doctrine” between 1991 and 1998 “more than 80 percent of Russian farms had gone bankrupt and roughly 70,000 state factories had closed creating an epidemic of unemployment….74 million Russians were living below the poverty line….During 1990s, when Yeltsin was dramatically changing the country under the direction of the Clinton administration, the rate of drug addiction in Russia increased by 900 percent. The suicide rate almost doubled….Widely unpopular policies, backed by Washington, were imposed on the country” and had “catastrophic results for children and the elderly.”…9/9/2016, “Clinton and Russia: Has US Media Forgotten the 1990s?“ New Eastern Outlook, Caleb Maupin.

This thread is the best illustration so far of a sickness which pervades humanity – war as a spectator sport. From the ignorant opinions of those whose knowledge is restricted to the obvious lies and propaganda of one of the sides in this conflict all the way to the unquestioning certainty of the opinions of those who have been following every skirmish all that is discernible is insight into the herd watching this killing. What type of sick puppy regards the undeniable horror on display as some type of tennis match or game of football?
Just about everyone has picked their favourite team and they barrack for that side, ignoring the atrocities that every war enables. Instead of condemning the war on the basis of the horror shows the audience uses the cruelty to justify it.
Instead of poring over de-constructions of a player taking an umpire to task or the outstretched foot which caused a penalty, spectators of “the ukraine” as this contest has been tagged, get to see a Russian prisoner of war being castrated by his Ukrainian captors or a ‘correspondent’ being escorted through a former pig factory by Russian forces, once death-row for swine, the site is now an abattoir for a different creature, showing the corpses of Ukrainian conscripts getting gobbled up by the once captive pigs. Someone actually pasted a link to it in here, probably in the hope that others would cheer at the sight of fellow humans getting gobbled because after all the kid must have deserved it since he had been fighting on the wrong side.
Once comrades who fought together against invaders Ukies & Russkies have been maneuvered into killing each other. Instead of us deploring brothers fighting each other to the death, we the crowd, jump into the frenzy of the fray cheering for one side or the other.
And this is alleged to be how a new way of the world will be built, by aping the worst bits of the old ways?

It doesn’t matter what they feel. It never has.
They will do what civilians have done for centuries: cope and try to stay alive while being butchered by both sides.
Since when do civilians have any real say in wars of this scale?

One immediate effect of the ‘Battle of Izyum’ (I wonder if they will strike a medal, to go with the gong for ‘The Battle of Kyiv’) has been the ‘outing’ of so many concern-trolling Russophobes, all ‘where’s Putin’s judo magic now?’ and ‘Russian incompetence’ and ‘we tried to warn you Russia was too weak’. Good to know. I wonder what their theme will be if Ukraine’s swing for the fences does turn into a counter-pincer that nips off all the forces that advanced too far too fast. Especially since the yappers apparently ‘knew all along’ that Ukraine was preparing a big and powerful surprise, it’s just amazing that all the ‘Putin fanboys’ were caught flat-footed.
I look forward to The Chessmaster, Don Bacon, Peter in AB and a few more frustrated front-liners forming their own battle school, where candidates will be taught how to think several moves ahead of the rest of us plodders, so you can dazzle the fools by ‘knowing it all along’ and grand strategy such as the rest of us can only dream about. I sure hope the first graduating class can be done in time to get out there and show us what they’re made of before Ukraine is defeated. Lead from the front, boys.
Ukraine’s only hope, and NATO’s current brainstorm, is to draw in the rest of the world and make it a free-for-all international furball fought in Ukraine. Trouble is, Ukraine is not a NATO member, so it would be tough for NATO to openly supply troops and any casualties would be a problem to defend – what the hell were they doing there, fighting for the most corrupt country in Europe? As far as NATO weaponry, Russia has been fighting that with considerable success for months now, and it is Russia that is getting excellent training in how to fight NATO and not the other way around, as NATO has to keep its battlefield surveillance and intel-sharing on the down-low.

And what do you propose the people of eastern Ukraine and Russia should do when assaulted by Zelensky and his nazi thugs – the ones who are obsessed with the brutish and worst bits of the ‘old ways’?
The NATZO thugees from the west are full tilt behind this relentless massacre brigade.
Are the people supposed to turn the other cheek?
Russia had done that ‘cheek ‘turn’ since 2000, hoping the westies and their thieving oligarchs would relent and make nice. No way, these warmongers simply pressed on and developed the same form of massacre brigades in Ukraine that they set loose in South America.
Malign global capitalism has been called to account on a battlefield in Ukraine and with any luck and perseverance the entire nazi vanguard will be eliminated. Good riddance.

Or what about those super junky unstoppable hypersonic missiles? you’ve a lot of strongly expressed opinions for someone so grossly ill-informed.

Don’t forget that a military war is at least also only politics. Russia gains a lot of money due high gas/oil prices, they are not in a hurry to change that. They are accepting temporarily military losses but gaining money. At the same time, insane EU politicians aka idiots are destroying the EU nations and at least the EU as a political unit, and that’s the coming end of NATO as we know it.
Smart move.
Accepting relatively small losses but:
watch the self-destruction of one enemy without firing one single shot,
and: making money in prolonging this war.
Guess what? In Spring 2023, there will be dramatic and fundamental changes in geopolitical means. And RF will be sure one of the winners. Putin is a master in Judo. He knows, how to use enemy’s forces against themselves..

As I scanned the comments, the image of Hessler the SS tank commander trying to get to the fuel dump in The Battle of the Bulge film filled my mind’s-eye, for it’s desperation of that sort that drives the Ukies. Their fate will be that of Hessler.
That is where I am at. The Germans wasted a large army just before 300 Soviet divisions attacked on the eastern front and pushed into Berlin. Same in North Africa. They lost, re-enforced Tunisia and 250,000 Germans surrendered. They took so many prisoners they were counting them in acres.
I will post it again. Mechanized units attacking a foe that has total air supremacy and fairly equal forces on the ground is a disaster for the attacker. They started the chess game with no rooks and no queen on their side of the board.

GW@345
Russia will NOT lose the war. Ukraine is bankrupt. Their best trained and blooded combat soldiers are currently being ground down at the tip of their assault lines in a narrow salient of about 30 miles in length and perhaps ten in breadth. As I pointed out earlier in the day, the closest analog is the Wehrmacht assault on the weakest sector of the American lines on 12-16-44.
As every armchair general in the world could pick up on the Ukie buildup prior to the pay-war assault on behalf of more funding for their bankrupt economy and more toys for their tattered armies to lose to Russian artillery and rocket attacks; it is beyond any possible probability factoring that Russian intel was totally on top of that game well before all those armchair generals.
The Ukies have lost somewhat upwards of 40% of their veteran NCO’s and junior-grade officers in prior attrition attacks by the eastern Allied forces. Their bewildered “Volksturm” home-guard units are abysmally armed and minimally trained and treated as mere cannon-fodder.
Like the Wehrmacht in the Battle of the Bulge, the Ukes have thrown in the cream of their reserve forces. This operation is also similar to that of the Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War where the bloody Brits and the fluffed-up French attacked Crimea to save the Ottomans’ ass and to keep Russia away from access to the Mediterranean. Russian cannon quite literally blasted that British brigade to hell.

This is not something to panic about. In a war with a line of this scale, you conduct movement to contact at Brigade level.
Ukraine’s counteroffensive cannot cross that river in front of it. Even if they could where will they go from there?
They just created another cauldron like Dbeltsavo in which those brave Ukrainians will die in the coming week, unless they make a rapid tactical retreat.

It will amuse me no end to observe the captured NATO enablers spilling their guts on being interrogated by Russian experts after the cauldron collapses. Who will they blame for the fiasco? As being foreign “adventurers” in a war which was not declared by their national leaders; they will face some extremely stiff penalties, should they opt to button up their lips.
No Abu Ghraib torturing is likely as the Russians feel no need to act like uncivilized barbarians. Some of the prisoners will feel totally betrayed by their own commanders and will be happy to share their frustrations and agony.

Before starting I apologize for using the automatic translator to express my opinion. Any idea may be confusing. This counter-offensive is absolutely similar to that of the Austro-German army against the Italian defenses in Caporetto in October 1917. An army deployed in cordon defense in insurmountable trenches was initially “punctured” by two infantry battalions. Briefly, the battle began with a relatively short concentration of artillery on the Italian artillery, after which a large number of platoons reinforced with numerous automatic weapons attacked the Italian strongholds, which according to the doctrine of the time closed themselves inside the fences, preparing themselves to a defense to the bitter end. The Austro-German patrols did not make a turn and slipped to the sides of the strongholds entering the Italian defense lines, leaving behind the strongholds practically intact, first provoking a tactical circumvention that transformed, with the confusion into a strategic circumvention causing the collapse of the Italian front of the ‘ Isonzo who forced the Italians to retreat for 120 km, leaving hundreds of thousands of prisoners in Austro-Hungarian hands, stopping at the Piave-Monte Grappa line.

The Tet offensive was a tactical disaster (all the attacks were crushed by the US army) but a strategic triumph. The Viets were not supposed to be capable of an offensive of such a magnitude. It turned public opinion in the US against the war.
Whether this’ll be the Ukie Tet is up to the Russian people. If they shrug it off and firmly remain behind Op. Z, it’ll end up as a footnote in the History of the Great War to End the Domination of the West. If they start to vacillate in their support, this could be Ze’s masterstroke and the beginning of the end for Putin, Russia, China and the Global South.
Once again the destiny of the world is in the hands of the Russian people. And there’s nothing we can do about it. Except pray.

The talk of the Battle of the Bulge (from the optimists) and the employment of nuclear weapons (from the pessimists) on this thread reminded me of a hypothetical scenario from a book I recently read about the development of US nuclear weapons. If you forgive the lengthy quote, here is how the battle could have played out if the US had nukes:

Recognizing that a major attack could be imminent when circumstances heat up in our scenario, General Patton informs General Eisenhower of the situation, who in turn acquires presidential approval for the release of nuclear weapons. Bad weather precludes the use of tactical aircraft in this situation, but the American Army has stationed the 40th Heavy Missile Group near Namur on the Meuse River for just this sort of contingency. Located about 50 miles behind the lines, the Missile Group’s Redstone missiles cover almost 400 miles of the front. Headquarters, directs Battery A to fire its Redstone missile with a full yield W39 Y1 warhead fuzed for an airburst at an altitude of 2 miles.
The hypocenter for its burst lies just to the west of Gemund. At the same time, Headquarters directs Battery B to fire its Redstone missile at a hypocenter located just to the north of Bittburg. These targets lie on the most likely routes for an attack through the Ardennes. Their crews have timed the missiles to explode at 05:30 hours on the morning of December 16. The plan is to catch the German troops unawares as they prepare for the day. At exactly 05:30, the horizon erupts in a flash of light. Massed German artillery has opened fire in preparation for the main assault of the American lines. Over the roar of the bombardment can be herd the growl of hundreds of tank engines.
It is at this point in our scenario that the two Redstone missiles arrive overhead. The flash of their exploding warheads instantly outlines the entire front in a stark glare. Within a 50-square-mile area lying directly below each of the thermonuclear explosions, a thermal wave vaporizes men standing in the open, and cooks off the fuel and ammunition stored in tanks, vehicles, and artillery sites. Out to a distance of 15 miles from the hypocenter of the blasts, severe burns and flash blindness incapacitates troops, a situation exacerbated by reflection off the fallen snow.
A shock wave follows the nuclear flash with incredible force. In an area covering about 250 square miles for each warhead, equipment is overturned and trees snap off, to lie pointing outwards from the center of the blast. The shattered remains of the forest, now piled over the narrow roads, traps any vehicles still operating after the blast. Scientists documented this effect after a comet exploded in 1908 over Tunguska, Siberia, with a force of 10 megatons. In this incident, the blast flattened 1,000 square miles of forest.
The fires started by hundreds of exploding vehicles and ammunition sites spread swiftly through the mass of kindling that a moment before had been a forest. By noon, a firestorm rages. Flames utterly consume more than 500 square miles of terrain. Along with Hitler’s pipe dreams of conquest, two Panzer Armies have perished. The Redstone attack destroys approximately 150,000 men, 1,000 tanks and armored fighting vehicles, 2,000 artillery pieces and vast stores of food, fuel, and ammunition. Had better reconnaissance been available in our scenario, this would not have been the end of this story. The Redstone Batteries would have been able to fire their second missiles to wipe out the 7th and 15th Armies, liquidating resistance throughout most of the Western Front!
Patton need not have bothered to get out of bed and strap on his ivory handled pistols.

The Redstone missiles used in this scenario had ridiculously large megaton range warheads, but a salvo of Iskanders or air-lauched cruise missiles would have the same effect. Nuclear weapons are one of the few true “game changers” in warfare, their employment would have terrifying consequences.

Posted by: S.P. Korolev | Sep 10 2022 7:10 utc | 479

I think there’s a reason the head of the Ukrainian military warned a few days ago that Russia may use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine. They’re pouring a lot into this counteroffensive, and could cut deep. Certain measures may become necessary that were never taken off the table.

Romans gave actors a pariah rank in society, because they “faked” by profession
It was yesterday that I was reminded what Nassim Taleb had to say about actors. The reason was such:

DeepL translation of the entire quote:

Our Kremlin source tells us that Moscow is aware that the Office of the President is involved in a game of British scriptwriters who are now implementing a repeat massive blitzkrieg aimed at destabilizing Russian society.
The main features are:
1. Defeatism [zrada] due to local defeats in the southern Kharkov direction in the Ukrainian crisis (in other places the Russian Federation holds its ground).
2. Destabilization from within. Attempts to stage a series of terrorist attacks in Russia to sow panic. Reinforcing the case of defeatism and the “all is lost” message.
New sanctions against Russia (oil and gas).
Also, the source confirms our May 20 insider, where we detailed everything, pointing out that the Western scriptwriters are in a hurry to end the Ukrainian crisis before winter and were preparing a controlled mass offensive, which is now happening, where no one from Bankova counts the losses, throwing everyone into the meat grinder.
Nothing new, still the same goal. A Maidan in Russia. We have described this insider strategy back in April. Now just the tools are different, but the goal is the same.
We give a new forecast, if there will not be a Maidan in Russia, until the end of 2022, then there is a great risk that the Office of the President will come to an end.

I will let Nassim Taleb to continue:

To understand why what happens in Hollywood is irrelevant to the rest of humans: 1) How many ACTORs do you have among your friends? 2) How many ACTOR friends do your friends have? Actors rarely mix with real people.
2) Romans banned actors from marrying, even mixing with citizens. Same dynamics in modern times, but self-inflicted: engineers can mix w/gynecologists… actors stay with actors. Look at the funerals of “gens du spectacle”.
3) I do not know many industries where people are hired either a) on looks, or b) ability to impersonate what one is not.
4) Actors should not be the ones lektchuring the rest of us on ethics & morality. They also have a tendency to conflate virtue and its external manifestation, given that everything in their world is appearance.
5) And for the slow thinkers on the thread, you don’t see gynecologists or train engineers lektchuring the rest of the world on virtue. Actors do. Gabish?
6) Remember: actors are trained to not seem stupid.
7) Now a harder questchon: what is the proportion of actors who voted for Hilary Monsanto-Malmaison [the Hillary we all now for Taleb]?
8) OK, let me be blunt. How many professions do you know, other than the ones where physical attributes are essential, where the modus “sleep your way up” prevails?

Personally, I do not see that this Kharkov offensive has accomplished much. It is primarily a PR campaign to justify looting Western taxpayers to continue supporting the MIC and the Western oligarchs.
Russia’s primary objective is to secure the Donbass republics and demilitarize Ukraine and denazify the West. How does this “offensive” change that. True, secondary objectives have been set concerning Kherson, Zaporishia and possibly Nikolayev and Odessa. This has not changed with this incursion in Kharkov, much less important strategically than the Black Sea area for Russia.
In any case, the fact that the Ukies have clearly overextended for short term PR purposes and are likely to beat a retreat or be destroyed in in the next few days once Russian regular forces arrive (as they currently are), I cannot see that the ukies have anything significant to boast about.

“How does anyone explain how Ukraine was able to concentrate so many troops and vehicles in a single zone, without being hit by a single Iskander or Kalibr or wtf Russian missiles are called?”
“SMO” theory among armchair generals is that the Russians deliberately allow the NATO weapon deliveries to flood into the Ukraine even though the Russians allegedly could easily interdict this flow, and deliberately allow troops and materiel to concentrate without using their alleged air supremacy to annihilate such concentrations, in order to draw the whole lot into “cauldron” traps, even though so far these cauldrons never do seem to get reduced.
All this is supposed to be part of a general strategy to go slow while the empire forces Ukraine into a Verdun-style meatgrinder, while the whole time the West is grinding itself to pieces economically and emptying out its own armories. Thus it’s supposed to be a giant economic Verdun for the entire West.
Well, that could make sense on a geopolitical level and may be working that way. But I think at the operational level it’s folly to deliberately neglect the destruction of enemy concentrations and weapons supply lines if you do in fact have the capability to destroy them as you detect them (if you have the capability to detect them), allegedly in order to destroy them all at once later.

“I think there’s a reason the head of the Ukrainian military warned a few days ago that Russia may use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine. They’re pouring a lot into this counteroffensive, and could cut deep. Certain measures may become necessary that were never taken off the table.”
That’s called projection: The Border people pray that NATO will initiate the use of nukes. Short of that the Russians will never find it necessary. In a crisis their hypersonic conventional weapons ought to be sufficient.
No, the most likely scenario for first use is that the empire would detonate a dirty bomb or small nuke in Kiev or Brussels or Boston as a false flag, in order to drive the already insane western masses to such a rabid state of fear and hate that the neocons could launch WWIII with full public support.

Now I know what is Mr. Konashenkov’s job: spend the entire day imagining what to write and whih numbers to use in a completely fake report.

It’s been known for ages.
Kupyansk is lost. It’s indeed a disaster for all those who trusted Russia in occupied territories.

“as Dr. Snekotron has pointed out on Twitter, war is not about how many casualities you suffer or how much you spend, it is about achieving one’s political aims.”
So said the Wehrmacht generals.

> “That Russia was supposedly degrading Ukraine’s capability for months, yet they have the capability to pull this off speaks to a level of incompetence IMO”.
This is what Scott Ritter meant with his warning about “strategic depth” but many critics did not understand. A huge back land with training centers, suppliers, factories and weapon stores beyond reach of any attack (NATO countries). At that point the degradation of Ukraine’s capabilities would be temporary. A first step. And if this next phase is not finished quick enough, next year another trained and supplied force appears. Of course at some point one runs out of people and experience. But it could take a while still. This war seems like a battle against time schedules, with many economical and political movements elsewhere.

Larry Johnson seems to have similar judgements about his “offensive” as I do.
https://sonar21.com/is-ukraine-steamrolling-russia/
He also links to Martyanov and MOA. I would add Military Summary and The New Atlas’s latest to consider, also.
The waste of human life is certainly a tragedy, if not a crime against humanity, but from a military perspective, Ukraine has not really accomplished much, if anything in the long run.

Correction – Kupyansk western side is lost.
Izyum is lost.
Liman is being evacuated.

Izyum has been captured by the nazis. Allied forces withdraw.

News from the front, including from Poddubny, which is usually reliable, state that the Russian Command decided to withdraw from Izyum to the left bank of the Oskil River in order to prevent any chance of encirclment. So, the UAF salient will be equalized in the south and will proobably allow the UAF to consolidate their positions.
Now, I’m a civilian with no military experience whatsoever, so my points might be simplistic or stupid. I’ll gladly accept any correction or counter-observatioon, but this decision strikes me as really worrying for a few reasons:
1) If the Russian Command opted for a withdrawl to preserve their forces it means that it believes that the encirclmente risk is imminent. Or at least, that they couldn’t deploy enough reserves in time to keep the line. Or not?
2) They feel that in case of encirclement they wouldn’t be able to break through their men in time. Or not?
3) The “Battle of the Bulge” analogy seem to lose its validity, since there won’t be a salient anymore, since the front will likely stabilize at the river bank. Or not?
4) How many reserves do the Russian even have available?
The Saker wrote an interesting and detailed piece on mobile defense, but here the Russians gave up a territory that took them at least 4 months of battle to occupy and that was important to support the operation to liberate the Donbass.

The concept of SMO (limited war) is the cause of the disaster. Also the mistrust of the Kremlin towards the Donbass republics, and the tendency to send Moscow men to manage liberated territorries instead of re-inforcing and mass supplying the Republics.
Yesterday while everyone was talking about a trop for the Ukies I was already saying so.
Not willing to become the I told you so troll. Anyway…
Change in Russian stategic thinking much needed …
I remind that I always thought Russian military intervention in Ukraine was useless. Cutting gas to Europe would have been enough for pressuring Kiev into implementing Minsk 2.
Now sorry take over of the whole country is necessary ie full war.
If it doesnt happen it’ll be Russia’s defeat and likely dismemberment as already announced by NATO.

100% of Russian army at war is not 100% in Ukraine.
Bombing campaign on Ukraine needs to cut-off all bridges and power plants especially in the western part and Kiev. Massive supply to LDNR troops.
Massive supply to Kherson, Zaporozhie region militias. If Russia has something: it is huge piles of soviet weaponry.
Return to war of movement engaging big formations from the north of Kharkov to the Dniper (Grayvoron to Kremenchug there is a way with small towns only) cutting Ukie forces in the East from supplies. Of course now its being late…
Engaging airborne should be the emergency procedure for this week – at least 40,000. Cutting off the salient from the north towards Balakleya. But I dream.

Limited SMO with a small force against fully mobilised and well armed country trained and backed by NATO. There is simply not enough force on the ground for Russia to succeed. This wave of 30k sweeping through kharkiv will be followed by more as thousands are being trained right now across eu countries for future pushes.

“That’s called projection: The Border people pray that NATO will initiate the use of nukes. Short of that the Russians will never find it necessary. In a crisis their hypersonic conventional weapons ought to be sufficient.”
If Ukraine starts steam-rolling into the east, and Russia’s close to losing, it’ll use nuclear weapons in small or large numbers. Losing isn’t an option for Russia.

Interesting times.
Country 404 has a lot of problems in transporting troops past the rail head. Due to a complete lack of trucks and troop carriers. Ergo this attack incorporates a mix of lightly/under-equipped 85-90% infantry to mobile mounted front line, assault troops.
In addition, the latest RF MOD reports show the destruction of an increasing number of “Technicals”*. A ‘technical’ is a stolen Toyota/Nissan/Ford/GM AWD Hilux/Tacoma truck/Utes. Complete with either the ‘KPV” or multiple 12.7 mm heavy machine gun mounts welded on the rear chassis rails. A dead easy-kill target for any helicopter gunship’s main cannon.
The trouble with foot soldiers is both speed and severe time limit constraints in combat efficiency. Which declines rapidly after the first 24 hours. For both the breakthrough mobile troops and the foot soldiers following at a snail’s pace behind them.
The RF aerospace attack helicopters are armed with up to eight A-T missiles capable of attacking moving vehicles. Independent of each other.
By now with mobile RF airborne troops have arrived. Along with a number of RF aerospace reserve attack Helicopter air regiments. The killing fields begin again.

It is absolutely evident since 2014 that Ukraine exists to attack Russia. There will be no negotiation: Ukraine is NATO! Therefore, for Russia the only alternative is to end this so-called SMO and do what must be done: war is declared and in progress, use the necessary means to win it as quickly as possible. The delay and prolonging of the war only harms Russia.
