Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

The Izium ‘Counteroffensive’ Success / Disaster

"It's a disaster," says Dima of the Military Summary channel.

I agree. The question now is: For whom?

Here is the map of the Izium region in the northeast of Ukraine on September 4.

bigger

In the middle we can see the Oskol river flowing north to south. Along it run railway tracks and roads that connect Izium region at the bottom of the map with Urazovo in Russia (further north, not on the map).

Here is the situation in the same area on the morning of September 9.

bigger

The Ukrainian forces have broken through the Russian positions on a wide front and in remarkable depth.

The above maps are from the Ukraine friendly site LiveUAmap. On the Russian side's map, as provided by Dima in his latest video, the Ukrainians are shown even further east and have reached the Oskol river.

bigger

This is latest Rybar version of the map which confirms that the Ukrainian side has at least in part reached the river. They took the town of Senkovo on the western side of it.

bigger
(German version as the English one does not load correctly.)

Izium, Lyman and several other important positions along the Izium front are now in imminent danger of losing their main supply route.

How could this happen?

Well, I am not in the Russian high command and have no idea of the how and why.

But what we know is that there were mostly conscripted men of the Luhansk Peoples Republic at the frontline when this episode started. The troops that held the town of Balakleya for two days where Russian National Guard forces. Those are militarized police units, not real armed forces. The Russian military had to send army forces to evacuate them.

Apparently the whole Russian front in that area was very thin and had too little artillery support. The Ukrainians moved extremely fast skipping towns and just blocking off local resistance to move on. They had a very significant number of tanks and armored transport as well as long range artillery support by several HIMARS systems. Many of the units must also have had night vision equipment as they did not stop even after sunset. There are also reports of strong foreign elements but those are hard to verify.

The LPR forces and whatever else was in the area had no chance. They were killed or captured or moved out.

The Russian side seems to have had little information about the size of the attack. The forces in the area were too few and too light. There should have been way more forces to block the Ukrainian move much earlier.

Then again – I do not know what plans the Russian military has had or might have. We might still see surprises.

Armored Russian reinforcements are now coming in from the north from the northern Kharkov region as well as from the east through Svatove. But they will still need some time to reach the front lines and to set up for battle.

The best countermove is likely to move the battle group seen in Svatove down to Izium and then up northwest and the group from the north southward in an attempt to pincer and envelope the Ukrainian forces.

Going this deep and this fast makes the attacking Ukrainian troops vulnerable. They will need some time to consolidate and to move up their artillery. Their supplies will have to come from Andivka on the left of the map and from Chuhuiv on the upper left. That are some 75 kilometer or 45 miles one way distances.

The Russian missile forces can interdict those routes by destroying the bridges along the way. They should do this as soon as possible. Andivka itself is surrounded by a river in the south, west and north. The handful of bridges over the river should also be dropped to cut the town off.

Ukrainian forces south of Izium and Lyman try to cross the Siversky Donets river to attack those cities from another direction. The idea is likely to bind the Russian forces there and to not let them move north to counter the upper Ukrainian strike.

There may be some ingenious Russian plan behind this to drag the Ukrainian forces in to then destroy them in place. But I do not see any evidence for that.

Heads will have to roll for this disaster.

Look what Russia did in Syria – they kicked the US butts and destroyed the US forces in Syria – forced to retreat and flee with their tails between their legs.

Wut? The U.S. military controls the Syrian oil fields. And they’ll be controlling Russian oil fields in 5 years (and Russia split up). The lack of cheap energy in West has been an object lesson for all. They will see to it Russia is never again in a position to effect the lifestyle and economy of the West.

They are assorted chancers, dullards, gormless mental defectives, kamikaze pilots, installed by dirty globalist schemers, who now hold all Europe as human shields, while they play Great Game chicken with a preeminent nuclear weapons power.
The problem with the whole US-allied sector is this: the gulf in value between what they’re trying to acquire and what they’re willing to pay for it is astronomical, their avarice is astounding, this inevitably reduces them to the most noxious criminality.

The latest from Intel Slava Z
🇷🇺🇺🇦 The Ukrainian telegram channel ZeRada writes:
At the moment, the situation in Kupyansk looks like this.
After two unsuccessful assaults using tanks, the Armed Forces of Ukraine began shelling the bridge across the Oskol River.
Most likely, intelligence has information that motorized columns of the RF Armed Forces are on the way, and the bridge must be destroyed so that the Russian tanks would not enter the city.
The idea of forcing Oskol and advancing further by the Armed Forces of Ukraine was abandoned.

@ 233
“There is life happening after the victory screen and you need to win the peace as much as you need to win the war.”
If Russia loses the war then Ukrainian nationalists will take bloody reprisals against pro-Russians living in southern and eastern Ukraine. Ethnic Russians in Crimea and DNR/LNR will be punished as well, given that those regions would be ceded to Ukraine in the event of a Russian defeat.
Further, Russian defeat will inevitably lead to a succession of wars in the Caucasus, and possibly elsewhere in and around the RF’s borders. That means lots more people will die.
I don’t know if you are familiar with Russian history, or with the background to the Ukraine war, but if you were, you would quickly see the truth in what I describe.
Russia’s most existential interests are at stake in this war.

Let’s suppose it is a trap. Why would the Russian high command allow the UAF to penetrate that deeply into the liberated area? One answer is: in this manner the Russians are able to get the very best of the UAF forces trapped in a ready-made cauldron. As soon as this cauldron has been cleared the UAF forces will be decapitated and left without any quality soldiers. As soon as the UAF will loose this battle, the RF will be able to advance more quickly.
Let’s suppose it is not a trap. This means that the Russian intelligence has been sleeping, because the build up op UAF forces in the area has been apparent for weeks. Well, the Russian intelligence has not been sleeping. Why did the RF keep ready a huge fleet of paratrooper helicopters? For this battle.

If the Russian leadership does not understand that this is a total war Russia shall be annihilated very soon.
The Western populations (USA, Canada, EU) and Ukrainians are ready to suffer and to suffer more. There shell be no discontent in EU. The population is mentally reduced and accepts anything coming form MSM.
It is a kind of death cult. Every day, the west escalates more.

Can’t speak for Ukrainians, but no one has asked the Western populations what they think, let alone if they want huge inflation and energy costs.

The Ukrainian government knows that his military resources are vastly inferior to those of Russia. So he knows that unless a quick withdrawal, this incursion will inevitably end in a Cauldron.
Too bad there is not an index of divergence between the interests of the governments and those of their People, we would laugh well while reading the rankings.

And dead soldiers never return to fight again. This is starting to look very bad, but I have to believe that the RU military has something up their sleeves. Perhaps they are drawing the UAF into a cauldron that ends at the Oskol river. While forces in Belarus and Russia take Kiev (where decisions are made) while the main Ukrainian forces are trapped in a fight to take Izium. It may take a few days, but I think that the US and Nato will be surprised at the new turn of events. Russia had at least a couple of weeks to fortify the area around Izium and provide support for the LNG allied forces, but they did not. This cannot be a mistake, and if not then what? It makes sense that NATO would “advise” that the UAF attack an area lightly defended.

Many here seem to forget what we’ve all known since the beginning: “NATO will fight this war to the last Ukrainian”. US-UK-NATO has not won a single war in the past 70 years. In its entire history, it won two wars:
War of Independence – A proxy war between England and France, with roughly one third of colonials for the Crown, one third against, and one third not interested.
Civil War – bleh.
Mexican War – Victory!
Spanish War – Victory!
WWI – No winners. It’s called an Armistice, not a Victory.
WWII – Russia won WWII. Russia took on 80% of German forces and beat crushed them all the way to Berlin. They also had troops in Japan before the US dropped The Bomb (accepted now as NOT the reason the Japanese surrendered).
Korea – Defeat.
Bay of Pigs – Incident, not a war, nonetheless a failed invasion of a tiny Communist state in Central America. There are still Commies there, with the US still whining about it.
Vietnam – Lost and then tried to say it wasn’t actually a war. Created 100s of movies with “when I was in Nam”. Never mentioned they murdered 2M vietnamese, only ever discussing about their 50K losses.
Gulf War – Didn’t remove Saddam and the fighting and bombing never stopped.
Afghanistan – Left with their balls between their legs.
Libya – not a war, more like a cowardly flattening of a defenseless nation with the help of France
Yemen – 3 cowardly remote-controlled bombs per hour for a straight ten years
Syria – hired Al-Nasra, never sent their soldiers. Didn’t win.
Ukraine – story will repeat itself
Grand Total – 2
It was never their objective to win wars. Their wars serve other goals: sucking resources and funneling them to a small cast of thieves in the US government and their lapdogs AND creating chaos because chaos is profitable, sells weapons, instills fear and prevents the emancipation of entire countries. Here the goal is to weaken Russia (and China) while studying its technology and tactics while also creating more chaos. That’s what adolescent countries do. They are born in the blood of others and thrive in that same process.
The ridicule of Uki-trolls jumping up and down like WWF brawl fangirls after witnessing ONE success in six months of war is mindbending. The US goal of weakening and preventing a bipolar world will continue with more wars on all fronts – never with the objective of winning. We will all grow old witnessing more violence and aggression. This is what declining empire do, knowing very well they can’t win. Remember that Rome didn’t fall on 4 September 476. The Roman Senate continued to exist until the 7th century.

OK, so what’s the noise here? Nine days ago Ukraine had the Kherson fiasko and now Russia unlearned how to do this war thing? Three days ago nobody here knew where Balakiya is and now it is The Balaklyea Front? Wake me up when they retake Donetsk (Kherson doesn’t look like it – OK, make it Izyum). Do you really think Putin’s driver doesn’t watch Military Summary or forgets to tell him. My money is on RockTime | Sep 9 2022 17:24 utc | 234. If you think about where to put a nice army without hurting anything, west of Oskil river north of Izyum looks like a nice place to me.. Russia so far didn’t really care much about the territories around Kharkiv. Just next to Russia, don’t forget. And Kupyansk is just 35 km away from Russian border. You think Russia should be worried about this? Let them have their 1000 km2 (32×32 km2) out in the nowhere for a week. If you give the Ukraine nothing at all, the West might really stop supplying more goodies.. Winter is coming, but we shouldn’t jump ahead of time or to premature conclusions.

“I have also heard of complaints from the local militia groups they are getting literally no supplies and backup at times. This may in the end be the worst mistake by the Russians.”
The Saker said the same thing a few days ago, though his attitude seemed to be “Who cares?”
“So to the question “did the LDNR forces have enough Mavic-type quads before the SMO began?” the answer is “no they did not”. Once the LDNR officials and their supporters raised a big enough stink over that, volunteers from all over Russia began sending quads to the LDNR and things slowly (especially for those who had to risk their lives every day!) began to improve. But this never was the “fault” or “lack of care” from the Russian armed forces whose job is very different.
Now the Russian military has exactly *zero* need for Mavic-type quads…As for the Russian military, it is not in the business of supplying LDNR forces with whatever they might need”

I am sure that the US/NATO would love that. If Russia sent the full strength of its military forces to occupy Ukraine, then Russia and Belarus would be open to an attack from NATO forces. Belarus is already holding training exercises just such an event from NATO: Perhaps they know something that we don’t?

Questions no one is answering right now:
Did the Ukies advance to re-capture old defensive positions they lost, or are they on new open ground, meaning they have to stop and dig in to defend themselves against Russian air power and artillery?
Have the Ukies forces acted like an “arrow”, meaning they sought to penetrate fast and deep but have a rather weak shaft, which can be easily broken off? Narrow penetrations begin to resemble CANNAE!
Have the Ukie flanks been strongly secured to allow for continued logistical support and controlled withdrawal, if it becomes necessary , or is every Ukie force concentrated at the “front”?
Reminds me of the first day of Shiloh in the US Civil War, when no less than Sherman, was surprised and driven back to a breaking point by the “weak” Confederate army under Johnson.
Close of the first day: Sherman to Grant: “Well, Grant we’ve had the Devils own day now, haven’t we??”
Grant’s response:
“Yes, Sherman, we have! Lick ’em in the morning though.” (And they did! Badly!)

No one or every second person in Germany believes that these elections were not fictitious!!
At least NOBODY will find these election results again in their environment colleagues / neighbors / friends, NOBODY wants to know someone who voted green! That is why even the young people did NOT choose this, which was also officially made known!!!
The majority of young people chose the CDU, at least that’s what election analyzes and the official tenor in the media say!
AND :
Germans were NEVER asked about sanctions or arms deliveries! On the contrary…. since Germany has NEVER delivered weapons to war zones in its history, ALL voters could assume that THAT will never happen either!
Ergo: Are all voters of ALL parties in Germany cheated! And that under pressure from the USA, who in turn have made it clear to sanction EVERY country in the EU on their whites who replace themselves …
From that Scholz can be blackmailed with his history as mayor in Hamburg by CIA etc, can be silent!
So again, are you a fool, was it sarcasm or are you a troll of Ukraine??

Does it not seem that military organizations foster incompetence? At least in their ostensibly primary reason for existence, war making, every such organization goes through a phase of removing the incompetents in charge before any success. You can cite so many examples.

Hoisted from Naked Capitalism comments:
“The Russian leadership will very soon have to decide if it is engaging in a limited military operation or fighting a war against NATO.
Even sober commentators and analysts have over the months been lulled into a sense of complacency in which Russian success was all but pre-ordained. But hang on a minute. If this is indeed a proxy war of NATO versus the Russian Federation than it is highly unlikely that the RF can prevail in this titanic struggle by running a shoestring “special military operation.”
The crowing and guffawing on the “sceptic” side over one Ukrainian blunder after another and the EU’s litany of own goals has distracted from the fact that Ukraine/NATO haven’t, until now, seriously challenged Russian and allied forces. US and NATO military power, while obviously not invincible, is still a force to be reckoned with and it was never realistic to expect that Russia could successfully fight against the full weight of the West’s proxy war/sanctions combo with one hand tied behind its back.
It looks like the phoney war phase of this conflict seems to finally be over and the real war is about to begin.”
Exactly right. Ludicrous to think that a ragtag force of haphazards equipped primarily with clapped out old Soviet weapons systems could just stroll to victory against everything NATO and ”the west” can throw at them.
Maybe the nonstop Zelensky clown show of the last 6 mos was at least partly a calculated psyop designed to make Ukie military seem weaker and dumber than in reality in order to get RU to lower its guard.
Wake up call ☎️ boys.
Will be entertaining to see the Faker and Marty spin this as the latest super clever feint, pincer cauldron trap that guarantees RU victory and glory and global power and respect. At least “b” is astute enough pause a moment (although he already changed the wording where he stated originally that this Ukie operation is a disaster for the SMO)

Big Serge’s thoughts
https://bigserge.substack.com/p/ukraine-counterattacks?utm_source=profile&utm_medium=reader2
Intro
– “In the last 72 hours or so, the pro-Russian side of the internet has been sent into an tailspin of panic over a new Ukrainian counteroffensive which is currently being launched in the Kharkov region, with the intention of compromising the Russian army grouping at Izyum. The panic was triggered by claims that Ukraine was advancing unopposed, encircling – or perhaps even capturing – the city of Balakliya – and on the verge of cutting off supply lines to Izyum.
If you will indulge me, I would like to revive a bit of optimism.
My view is fairly simple: Ukraine cannot and will not reach meaningful objectives – what we call “operational depth” – and has in fact thrown much of its carefully crafted premium reserves into a dangerous position. I believe it’s highly likely that these top rate Ukrainian formations are about to be savaged – but this is still an important learning moment for Russia.”

Posted by: Aslangeo | Sep 9 2022 20:39 utc | 331

@ Arch, Gruff, norwegian, and hippie; I’m of the same opinion as you. Given the established pattern thus far, RF planners must have known that the forces described by b would not be able to withstand a massed attack, and given the current offensive, they probably figured such an attack was bound to occur. Looking at the posted maps, and again going from precedent, another (maybe even a couple) potential cauldrons have been set up to boil what’s left the UAF.
And I further agree that all anyone who isn’t a member of the respective military planning teams (including barflies) can really do at this point is speculate, hope the slaughter will stop soon, and the ZNPP doesn’t go south.
Thanks b.

What is very saddening about these kinds of setbacks is that we know any civilian left behind who simply accepted food from Russian troops or spoke to them publicly will suffer torture and likely death.
Of course, in such a complicated and wide conflict, military setbacks are expected. They would be of little consequences if they didn’t lead to massacres by Ukrainian sonderkommandos. I really hope no one was left behind and Russia makes sure to evacuate friendly civilians from the areas they occupy.

Posted by: Bolivar | Sep 9 2022 21:01 utc | 334

This paragraph from Saker about the Ukie propaganda offensive about covers it.
“The fact that a “super-dooper US military commander and genius strategist” like Blinken has traveled to Kiev is no coincidence and it is rather evident the true reason why this entire show has been executed is pretty obvious: Blinken is desperate to make President Brandon look good/better/less clueless (“Presidential” in US parlance) before the upcoming elections. Blinken in Kiev is not unlike BoJo in Kiev: just a brain-dead ignoramus demanding “total war” against the Russians at, literally, any cost (to the Ukrainians, of course, and they are both irrelevant and expandable for Uncle Shmuel).”
A pity b became lead concern troll. Thread is full of hand wringers and weepers.

An update:
Kherson region — RF Forces deployed electronic warfare units and now they are jamming communications of the Ukrainians. Russian forces are also conducting sweeps on the locals who have been proven to “collaborate with the Armed Forces of Ukraine” and transmit the coordinates of Russian Armed Forces crossings to them. Cell towers have been tapped by the Russian Armed Forces units as well, and electronic intelligence is working the way it should’ve been since day one.
The sightings of Russian aircraft have increased by several fold since last night, thousands of Russian Armed Forces troops were moved into the conflict area, armour has been airdropped for the last 10 hours or so, special forces were deployed to counter the small Ukrainian units that carry out the breakthroughs (ISIS style, someone with experience from Iraq and Syria planned this without a doubt) & Russia is very familiar with these tactics. Central military district seems to be the driving force behind the counteroffensive just launched by Russia on the other end of the front line. The goal is to destroy Ukrainian units attempting breakthroughs and to inflict air strikes into accumulation of Ukrainian units that have broken through the areas mentioned in the past 48h.
Russia conducted mass evacuation of civilians deeper into DPR and into Russia-mainland. This suggests they’re ready to reduce these places to rubble.
Ukrainians keep striking civilian buildings in DPR, several civilians were killed since this morning.
It’s too early to give any positional updates. Let the troops work on both sides and let’s look at it once in every 24h
If we report one thing, it will change in 2 hours. Then it’ll change again.
1x a day positional reports are needed, not this constant flow of confusion with positions. Fog of war is real.
The Russians are now readjusting to match the new tactics employed by Ukrainians, so the tide is likely to turn around soon.
Large calibre MLRS has been employed by Russians, GRADs are working as well but from the side of DPR.
DPR troops tell us they finally received reinforcements from Russia, including equipment.
There are several settlements said to be recaptured by Russian Armed Forces at the moment, but we haven’t seen any proof yet. Too early to report.

Understanding Russian military tactics is Saker and Martyanov’s line of expertise. The likes of MacGregor Ritter b ect understand US/Nato military.
Something I am starting see is that for the Russian side, war is mathmatical, not emotional. What we see recently with Kherson and now the Kharkiv/Izyum idiocy is that the west and Zelensky need a propaganda win. That is emotional strategy.
Ruble is the best performing currency this year.

@chessmaster;
To my knowledge “Nightvision” just stopped posting and the editorial staff could not get in contact with him.
@PeterAU1; with all respect none of them have any expertise. They are armchair bloggers hawking books and users to ad agencies.
B has some relevant expertise as he was a tank officer in the Bundeswehr.
Someone else who has expertise is Lester Grau; whose book in the Russian army and doctrine is available here:

Allegedly Russian television is now broadcasting that the Ukrainians won a “substantial” victory.
This is nothing to take lightly. The denial must stop. Something went seriously wrong with the SMO. Now there must be very serious accountability on the Russian side, in terms of who screwed up. A reckoning within the RF must happen immediately, otherwise Russia will lose the war.
Should Russia lose the war, the consequences will be extremely grim for the country and Russians throughout the former Soviet space.

As I siad both MacGregor and b have nato training and understanding. Sakers job with Nato was to specifically understand the Soviet way of war. Martyanov was soviet military. Doesn’t mean they will always be right.
In the west here, the media propaganda, even a large number commenting on these blogs are fighting an emotional war. Russia fights a mathematical war.

Therion #82

Things that havent changed in tje last 72 hours:
Ukraine has lost over 20% of its own territory to a small police operation.
150,000+ Ukrainian troops KIA.
Decimation of Ukrainian economy.
Decimation of European economy.
Perilous political instability in USA.
So not sure what has been accomplished with a fly buzz counterpunch.
This is like getting demolished for 8 rounds and finally managing a flurry of middling counterpunches in the 9th. Dont forget you’ve still got 3 rounds to go, and the first 8 dont bode well for your chances moving forward.
Whatever has been “accomplished” in the last 72 rounds is not sustainable on the part of Ukraine since RF has escalatory dominance. RF is operatimg on 3 on the pain dial. The dial goes to 12.

Thank you (and others) for their timely reminders.
We are used to reacting immediately whereas in war it is the long term that counts. The 1944 battle of Kursk that I posted in the last Uke thread took an entire month to resolve into a nazi rout that led promptly to the fall of Kharkov.
Remain calm and avoid panic buttons and hasty judgements.
Sure there can be analysis of shortcomings and so on but we are best to remind ourselves that this is a long span civilisational struggle to destroy the private finance giant squid that is choking humanity.
So far so good. The battle by eastern rational thinkers against western fanatical thinkers has just begun and it is clear that the fanatics are only too ready to rush into a trap of their own making.
Consider Therion’s words above. May I shout the bar a round of drinks as even the Queen of the englanders is powerless in the face of the mighty easteners 😉

Don’t Matter. AFU Units are being monitored, targeted, and engaged.

RUS have plenty of Missile+Shell Artillery.
RUS have plenty of Army Air and Close Air Support Aircraft.
RUS have plenty of Air Force Jets+FighterBombers+Bombers with Missiles+GravityGlide Bombs.
RUS have plenty of Cruise/Supersonics/Hypersonics/TBMs.
RUS WILL BE MOVING ACROSS THE RUSSIAN-ETHNIC/SPEAKING AREAS TO EXTRACT THE UKRONAZI – AT THEIR OWN SCHEDULE.

Martynov was a junior officer in the coast guard 40 years ago.
Hasn’t lived in Russia for 30 years. Since then has worked as a lab tech for Boeing or whatever.
Ritter seems to either have been a victim of kompromat or has odd fetishes and showed poor judgement.
Prefer professional people like Jacques Baud, Lester Gray, etc. or smart people on the ground like Erwin Castel whose blog is always worth reading:
https://alawata-rebellion.blogspot.com/?m=1
In the past in the Western media there would have been journalists on the ground on both sides and some variety of debate, not any more.
The next 72 hours will be interesting.

Russia should track and destroy Ukraine air force and equipment. Just firing artillery fire is not useful. Russia should also destroy Ukraine’s bridges and fuel depots.
As a matter of deterrence Lviv, Kiev and Odessa should be struck with Kinzhal missiles.
Ukraine army is stretched too thin. They can’t sustain this. Russia should attack Ukrainian supply lines and flanks.
The biggest reason for Russian failures is assuming Ukraine would give up. Ukraine won’t. Their fighting capability must be permanently destroyed.

Posted by: Jason | Sep 9 2022 22:05 utc | 352

This my 1st post here, so i´ll try to stay realistic.
After initial punch on lines which were almost without defense, taking Izyum and Kupyansk is a goal which simply can not be achieved. Like DakotaRog posted, if it is true, that whole Ukr forces in this operation have 9 000 troops, considering that RF reinforcements are pouring from all over the country(even Moscow),(not from other frontlines in Ukr), this Ukr attack, offensive, whatever it is, is simply doomed. Like in Kherson.
Covering, according to the map, an area of 400km2, without reinforcements is just not possible. Apparently, even Balakleya is not fully taken, and not even encircled, i´ll blame the fog of war if that isn´t correct.
Imo, this is just another blunder, wasting lives and achieving nothing, as i said, like in Kherson.

So, war is politics, but hardly democratic politics.

I found this analysis very informative, complete with maps and Rybar situation as of 5 PM sep 9;
A couple of key points:
-if it is anything the Russians can do and do very well because they train and rehearse endlessly, it is to move huge forces by rail, road, air in all types of weather and all hours of day and night.
They are masters!
-this emphasis on a mobile defense, as noted in the article, exposes these settlements and villages, which have substantial populations of Russians, to the murderous thugs to come in and “ethnically clean” as occurred in Bucha. This carnage and bloodshed compounds already the military carnage and bloodshed.
-finally, I do not have answer to this but the Russiansmust get the message across to these war mongers with nato troops, indeed, and heavy supply of weapons that they are now participants in this this war, this carnage and bloodshed, and must suffer the consequences-in the mean time, this influx must the attacked and shut down as I’m sure is on going now.
To sum it all up, this is a huge shedding of blood and lives, all directed by the fat asses in brussels, london and wash dc. It is criminal beyond measure and these handlers belong in prison forever but it will never happen. They will just skate off to plan the next disaster.

If the Russian General Staff centers their decisions on “mathematics” they are doing it wrong. The coin of the realm in decision making is not “mathematics”, it is *RISK*. “Mathematics”, perhaps gives the aura of rational scientific thinking, but mathematics is subservient as a tool to calculate risk. You can use math, intuition, astrology, a coin, or a wild ass guess to either mitigate, transfer, or assume the risk of a particular decision.
Russia assumed the risk of dead civilians in Bucha by withdrawing. It also assumed the risk of dead civilians in Donetsk when deciding to “go slow” and not wipe up the artillery sites on the Ukie side.
No doubt RF have excellent intelligence and have made a rational choice: none-the-less they have traded one outcome at the risk of another outcome.

I have followed this since the coup in 2014. I have followed this blog since I discovered it a number of years ago. This is my first ever post. You get to know who the regulars are and the regular trolls but since this little push back by Ukraine soldiers/ foreign mercenaries, the new names and trolling is laughable. You are out of your league here. We spot you from miles away. b has been damn near perfect in his analysis and predictions on this SMO and many other subjects and regard his opinion plus others on here very highly. That being said it’s always fun to see what the usual trolls have to say. It lets me know what the MSM is regurgitating on any said subject.
Here’s what I think thus far of this operation. It’s like a hockey game. RUS vs UKR. Russia, the much more superior team comes out flying and builds up a 5-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and knocks a whole UKR line out of the game. The ukes are scrambling, taking stupid penalties and trash talking all the while. Russia slams a couple more quick goals in and it’s 7-0. They add another before the period is over.
Going into the 2nd with an 8 point lead, the Russians take their foot off the gas a bit and decide to toy with the Ukrainians. The ukes start playing a bit harder, get a break away and score. The Ukrainian fans are going crazy, the western sportscasters are 100% sure the UKR are going to mount an amazing comeback. The USA is sending better sticks and water bottles to the team. They should be there 3 weeks after the game is over. The Russians will have none of it and score 3 goals in their next 4 shifts for an 11 – 1 lead. Pure silence from the fans and sports media. Pretty sure the stick and bottle order got canceled.
Next shift here we go, a line brawl… they’re all fighting, goalies included. After the refs sort it all out Russia gets a couple major penalties and the Ukes are going on a 5 on 3 powerplay. The starting goalie for Russia leaves the game with an injury and the backup comes in.
With a 2 man advantage and a cold Russian goalie, the Ukranians go on the offensive. They score on their first shift. 11-2. They score again 45 seconds later. 11-3. Holy crap, they score again 2 minutes later. What a roll they are on. They score again on their next shift. 11-5 and the UKR fans are going absolutely nuts. The media is saying they’re gonna win gold in the next Olympics. The ruskies are in big trouble now.
The penalties have expired, RUS is at full strength again and the starting goalie is back in net after a quick examination by the team doctor.
The Ukrainian team, fans and whole western media was heard saying in unison, “OH SHIT”.
And that’s where we are at in this SMO. All the UKR fanboys will disappear and be silent once the Russians start kicking UKR ass once again.

Posted by: Watzov | Sep 9 2022 22:13 utc | 359

I find it inconceivable that Russian intelligence and general staff did not see this Ukrainian offensive coming. Hence, there are two possible inferences: Either the Russian military overestimated their own ability to resist the offensive, or they deliberately created a zone of weakness so as to lure the enemy into a trap. None of us knows the correct explanation at this time, but given the generally high level of strategic planning on the part of the Russian forces thus far, my money is on the latter. And even if Russia did screw up, I see no reason why they cannot recover the advantage and in due time, obliterate the Ukies.

Bullshit. I remember when the 9000 troops number came out, in the context of the 15000 troops in the Kherson counter attack. The 9000 figure was to try to obscure the intensity of the Kharkiv side attack – it is obvious at this stage that more than 9000 Ukie/NATO troops are involved against the Izum bridgehead.

”Can’t speak for Ukrainians, but no one has asked the Western populations what they think, let alone if they want huge inflation and energy costs.” – Posted by: YetAnotherAnon | Sep 9 2022 20:03 utc | 313

Polls are showing broad but falling support for Ukraine in the war: https://www.tasnimnews.com/en/news/2022/08/25/2763629/poll-finds-americans-increasingly-doubt-ukraine-support

The survey suggests waning support for US involvement as the conflict drags on, contributing to surging inflation on the home front. In fact, 40% of Americans now agree with the statement that “the problems of Ukraine are none of our business, and we should not interfere.” That compares with 31% when the same question was asked in April.
Moreover, 59% of survey respondents, including 69% of Republicans, agree with the statement that “given the current economic crisis, the US cannot afford to lend financial support to Ukraine.” About half (51%) still support providing weapons to Ukraine, down from 73% in April. Just 26% support sending US troops to Ukraine, down from 39% in April.

But maybe another question to ask is, “How much do Western politicians care what their constituents think?” Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has an answer: she will support Ukraine without regard for the sentiments of German voters.

“If I give the promise to people in Ukraine – ‘We stand with you, as long as you need us’ – then I want to deliver. No matter what my German voters think, I want to deliver to the people of Ukraine,”she said.
Despite countless Germans facing economic and logistical hardship this year (ranging from an increase in migrants/refugees, being told to shower/travel/do laundry less, and the possibility of many not being able to heat their homes or get proper food supplies), Baerbock has stated Ukraine will come first- and Germans must endure.”

AP (https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-nato-kyiv-antony-blinken-707ac6a0f7d5a6e869ee9e2faeb02e52) says NATO seek Kharkhiv gains as ‘small’ and that they predict the war will last many more months.
Beyond the fighing – which we in the West have no direct control over – my question regards US and EU policy. Most liberals in the US support NATO, according to a recent Pew Research poll. Does that mean liberals also support the project of re-establishing US economic hegemony worldwide? Via either the Biden (‘Clintonian’) or the Trump (‘Reaganite’) plan?
Also, there is evidence of a fight within the Democratic (and Republican) Party at the highest levels over Biden’s Ukraine policy. The New York Times twice in May 2022 urged the Administration to ‘dial it back’. A variety of military voices have urged negotiations over war funding. Steve Forbes (*that* Steve Forbes) recently admitted that ‘grave errors’ on the part of the US and IMF ‘paved the way’ for Putin’s rise.

My view is fairly simple: Ukraine cannot and will not reach meaningful objectives – what we call “operational depth” – and has in fact thrown much of its carefully crafted premium reserves into a dangerous position. “Russia was caught by surprise?”
Total BS
Consider the ZapNPP episode where the ‘plucky Uke special forces’ motoboated into a delightful trap and then those that made it back to the other shore assembled to take stock of their debacle and were shelled to oblivion. Russia knew they were coming. Knew the entire plot it seems.
Leaving a zone with a skeleton defender force is normal. Called tripwires. The Russian army has demonstrated rapid response and so on. Kazakhstan in January this year ring a bell?
This is a total embarrassment for Blinken and his junkie mate Zel. One gets the impression that the upper echelons of the USA are all as ‘smart’ as Hunter Biden and the Big Man 🙁

From b’s post
“But what we know is that there were mostly conscripted men of the Luhansk Peoples Republic at the frontline when this episode started. The troops that held the town of Balakleya for two days where Russian National Guard forces. Those are militarized police units, not real armed forces. The Russian military had to send army forces to evacuate them.”
LPR is a closed shop. Unlike DPR they do not allow reporters. The destroyed river crossing some months ago. That goes back to the attempted assault on the gas field in eastern Syria. Not sanctioned or backed by Russia MoD that force of militia’s and mercenaries was destroyed by US air power.
LPR is very much a dark zone. Learning a hard lesson? Bait in a trap? One things for sure, Rus MoD knew this attack was coming. To draw the yanks and brits in, Russia would have kept reserves a long way from the sucker zone.
Kherson offensive and once that is defeated the Kharkiv offensive starts rather than simultaneous? Kherson was to draw Russian forces to the south.
The number of bloating and blackening ukroid bodies in that Kharkov salient will reach WWII eastern front proportions.

Don’t know whether anyone read this: https://bigserge.substack.com/p/ukraine-counterattacks
And I agree to most of it. Maybe we were overly concerned yesterday, and I still have my doubts about the wisdom of the Russian strategy.
Anyway, there is no way for Ukraine to succeed in a sustainable fashion. The RF has an army of 1.2 million troops, 2 million in reserve, they may easily muster another million without serious consequences for the economy. The strong rouble led to a rising influx of migrant workers. And Russia, while not perfectly prepared for a war against the West, still is able to produce anything their forces need, and may (and should) ramp up production. See British RUSI analysis https://rusi.org/explore-our-research/publications/commentary/return-industrial-warfare
And that analysis was written in June, long before the European energy crisis which still has not fully unfolded but already crippled European industries. Good luck with producing hundreds of thousands artillery shells, infantry ammo by the tens of millions, missiles, tanks and so on, with gas at least tenfold more expensive. And no, the US are not in the position to step in. Their defense industries have not been crippled as badly as the rest of their industry, but have “streamlined” supply chains for more profitability. let us watch them collapsing. F-35 shipments have just been revoked due to some Chinese spare parts in them.
So I fail to see that the West is braced for a protracted war the Neocons are so horny for. And they will realize it with the same “oops” the Europeans now did, who pressed for shutdown of Nordstream 1 already in June, and are stunned now by the effects of closing gas imports. “Nowbody could anticipate” that industries, but also bakeries and services need gas, my ass. Compared with that some minor blunder at the Izyum front is close not worth mentioning.

Only some Washington think tanks and CIA media are talking about using nukes. That’s probably because someone in the Swamp got a passing idea that they might cause some false flag “incident”. Also ukrop army commander told us to “get ready for limited nuclear war”. Like Ukraine controls the US nukes now. And US controls Ukraine military command & control.

Posted by: unimperator | Sep 9 2022 23:14 utc | 384

And to repeat what I wrote a couple of times: Ukraine has, rationally, no manpower to waste, as the population is dwindling. This was well described in January already in Asia Times by David Goldman: https://asiatimes.com/2022/01/ukraine-is-the-hollow-man-of-europe/ (only the teaser, the rest behind paywall).
To add some data: Ukraine posted 41 million inhabitants in 2020, while demographers in the country estimated no more than 35m, maybe less. At least 6 million thereof were already permanently working, living, maybe raising children outside the country, that number has more than doubled by the war.
Moreover, nearly 3 million on Crimea, and over 5 million in LPR and DPR were only formally Ukrainians. So at most 16-18 million remain in the Kiev controlled space, only at most half of them in working/military age, less than half of them males. And Ukrainian losses were estimated 200k dead by a UA general two days ago (I would consider a somewhat lower number plausible), with wounded and permanently unfit for service something between 300 and 500k combat losses.
That the UA command is wasting this resource as cannon fodder in meat grinder combat, is irrational beyond belief.

I think this poll [showing broad but waning support for Ukraine] is accurate. The results coincide with my experience. Most people here and most media favor Ukraine. Sadly, most also seem to have an inbred contempt for if not visceral hatred of Russians. But support for the former seems to be waning: the Ukraine flags waving from pickup trucks and the “Stand with Ukraine” paraphernalia so prevalent early this past spring are now mostly gone from the streets of this liberal West coast town.

Jacob Dreizen also thinks that Russia is close to using their nukes.

It is quite logical.

The polls are probably reliable showing the direction and somewhat the magnitude of change, but reliable (as in projecting real popularity) they are not. That’s the same they say about Chinese economic data being unreliable – it probably is, but you can still determine the direction and magnitude it’s changing.

Lets be honest, the USA/Canada/EU cannot change its direction.
The West must always win.
The elite in USA/Canada/EU is fully supporting involvement in this war.
There are no protests against it.

I’ve noticed the same lack of enthusiasm on facebook too. Not so many blue and yellow flags. Not sure why. I guess people got caught up in the initial excitement but it went on too long and they got bored.

Yeh, but isn’t everything b wrote true?
I will tell you something for nothing…
I have got more to worry about than The Death of our Queen.
My Mother-in-Law died recently and so did my cat.
The world has gone completely mad, and I am trying my best to stay sane, and although very green, we live in an old big house that apart from thick brick walls has little insulation
Just had a ton of smokeless coal delivered on the front lawn.
My wife is worried that someone is going to steal it.
I am not allowed to have a new kitten yet.
However, we do have a new Baby Grandchild to be born soon.
It is my responsibility to keep the house warm.
We are lucky having a chimney that still works.
Coal works far better than British Gas, and is about one tenth of the price.
It will be tough, but we will survive.
None of us have been jabbed.

Also the so-called honeymoon with Ukrainan refugees in EU-rope is over. You wouldn’t believe but during spring months a lot of natives in eastern Europe were fed up with all the entitlement attitude and even beating random natives on the street by nazis, western Europe followed with a small delay. But the honey is drying up, no more entitlement.
Nato is throwing everything they conceivably can against Russia in Ukraine, but of course they won’t tell it to all the ignorant subjects.

I read it, and deem it nonsense. That starts with the “analysis”. The Russia-Kupyansk-Izyum road has never been cut, the Ukrainian offensive seems to be stalled in a salient, a terribly dangerous operational situation even for a superior force. Certainly, the operational crisis is not over yet, it will be when the Ukrainian attacks are definitely stalled like on the Kherson-Nikolayev front, where btw. Ukrainian losses in manpower rose again despite lessening combat activity. Russians seem to be mopping up there.
But let us assume for a moment that the UA succeeds to gain operational depth, and disrupt Russian forces conquering more territory. That would be bad, sure, but not a large gain for Ukraine. Russia still has the option to double (rather triple or quadruple) down, sending hundreds of thousands fresh troops, a more significant part of her armoured force, more aircraft, destroying Ukrainian power plants (leaving out NPP) and substations, destroy bridges, those over the Dnyepr first, but not limited to. That would lead to the collapse of the country, but also of any organized weapon, ammo, and fuel supply. Such would be a US style of warfare, with an order of magnitude higher civilian losses.
No nukes needed for, which would raise additional postwar problems for reconstruction. Why should the Russians do that where they can always win without?

Funny to see so much anguish and wringing of hands as if the Russians are incompetent. Nobody here knows what the plan is. It could easily be more about bleeding the west over the long term. Suckng in Nato into a debacle or a long term plan to destroy the western currencies.
Russins are known for being good at chess aren’t they?

dh@390…some international corporations, having a blue/yellow logo colour scheme pre SMO, are changing to a more solid colour rather than look to be taking sides…..just bidness.

I have only been following this site since March, but the last few days have been overwhelming with nervous posters categorizing operations as a ‘disaster’, and reducing the Russian effort to a failure based on a fraction of the total spectrum of activity, when considering the entire window of geopolitical and military operations. Perhaps young people (I assume they are young because they seem rash and emotional in their commentary) have become too accustomed to 72 hour wars on CNN, and they would prefer Putin to land a MIG31 on a runway in Odessa with a large ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner to satisfy their emotional fulfillment; That is not real, that is PR. History has shown us for the last 60 years that any force that requires a PR victory will never win in the long run. There is great discussion across the spectrum here amongst all the regulars, so it is easy to dismiss the hysteria of the other rabble, but the last few days have been tough.
My own thoughts… at a tactical level, I don’t follow the war on an hourly basis, but check in every other day to get the details on movement and updates. However, at a higher level, It is a dangerous time for this conflict. The Ukraine is all but defeated, but the powerbrokers are showing such great imprudence in their decision making thus far, that I don’t think they have the sense to accept the inevitable and alter their strategy in this domain. I suspect it is a mere months before we see direct contact between Western Air Power and the Russian Air Force and Air Defences. This will occur against a backdrop of great civil unrest in Western Europe, and an increase in tensions in the Balkans between Serbia and NATO, and the Baltic State provocations against Kaliningrad (notwithstanding other global conflicts/theatres and American domestic issues). The British (the west in general, but the British are showing unexplainable zeal) are pushing for a fight with Russia, they should be careful what they wish for. Thankfully King Chuck will not subject us to daily photos in green T-shirts… will he?

It’s an obvious Wait n Bait! Like a Venus Fly Trap; Attract ’em in, look weak when you are strong (Sun Tsu #1 Rule). Sweet honey pots in a Venus Fly Trap!
Be conscious, be aware and be vigilant, but don’t attack. Enemy runs in to get closer to HONEY. Calls Base… says hey come on in the coast is clear… loads of honey for us to get GLORY for Der Fuhrer Zelensky so he’ll give us Medals!
Just stuff all the honey in your pockets.. oohh yummy! …and the TRAP Springs shut w/ rivers on entrance bridges downed and river on other side. Don’t attack fast… slowly close in and force them to surrender! SAVES LIVES on Both Sides! Classic Putin Warfare! …not interested in GLORY like the Clown… only WINNING!
