The Ukraine Is Still Losing So What Is Its Plan?

Russian and Donbas forces have cleared the city of Mariupol except for the giant metallurgic complex of Azovstal which is held by some estimated 4,000 men, including many from the fascist Azov battalion.

On Sunday Russia opened corridors across the front line and asked for those forces to surrender. However the Zelensky government ordered them to stay and to continue to bind Russian forces which otherwise could be used elsewhere:

Russia had given the Ukrainian fighters in Mariupol until Sunday morning to lay down their weapons or be “eliminated.” On Sunday, the forces at the plant ignored the deadline, and Ukrainian officials vowed that they would not surrender. In response, the Russian assault intensified, with missiles and bombs hitting the city and new attacks occurring near the plant, according to the Ukrainian military.

Ukrainian officials said on Sunday that the struggle was not over for Mariupol, which for two months has tied up Russian troops and resources that are badly needed elsewhere.

The Azovstal complex is a 2 by 2 miles industrial area. It can be surrounded and controlled by a relatively small force. Those within the area no longer have heavy artillery ammunition and presumably little other supplies. The Russian forces can see and bomb anything that moves on the open ground and can otherwise sit back and wait their enemies out.

I do not believe that holding on to Azovstal will significantly delay the upcoming second phase of the Russian operation which will surround and destroy the Ukrainian army on the Donbas front.

The Russian military has two huge advantage over the Ukrainian forces in the east. One is of course its air superiority. The other is the unimpeded supply line which allows it to get as much heavy artillery ammunition, fuel and food to its forces as it needs.

Without fuel the Ukrainian army can not move and without constant supply, especially of large amounts of artillery munitions, it can not counter Russian artillery which will be in heavy use against it.

This pictures of a former Ukrainian position show the devastating result of such a situation.

bigger

Nearly all of the Ukrainian ammunition and fuel supplies have been bombed and destroyed. What is trickling in through its western borders has difficulties to reach the eastern front and is anyway not enough to supply an actively fighting and maneuvering army.

On April 16 Russia shot down a Ukrainian military transport plane that was bringing 'western' weapons to Odessa. Today it destroyed another ammunition depot near Lviv were 'western' weapons are crossing the border into Ukraine. Some bits of fuel allegedly still reach the Ukraine through trains from Moldova. But that is far from enough.

Here is a week old report on the fuel situation:

Since the beginning of the war, the number of gas stations in Ukraine has decreased three times, and private fuel consumption has decreased by about the same amount, said Sergey Kuyun, director of the A-95 consulting group.

“According to our estimates, a third of the total number of gas stations is operating, this is about 2.5 thousand stations, before the war there were 7.5 thousand. Of course, the main reason is the lack of fuel. Consumption has also decreased three times compared to the pre-war level,” he said at a closed briefing at the Media Center in Lviv on Monday.

At the same time, Kuyun noted that traders or network owners are forced to provide their most strategic and powerful facilities, located mainly in regional centers or on main routes, while peripheral stations are forced to stand idle, although there are also a lot of consumers there.

According to him, the shortage of fuel became especially aggravated after the shutdown of the Kremenchug Oil Refinery as a result of a missile attack by Russian invaders.

On April 2, the Russian invaders destroyed the infrastructure of the Kremenchug oil refinery with their shelling, and it stopped working.

The damage done daily to the Ukrainian military and military industry is huge. One can get a sense of it when one reads through the briefings of the Russian defense ministry. From today's morning brief (here in full as some have difficulties accessing the site):

The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue the special military operation in Ukraine.

High-precision air-based missiles destroyed 16 military assets of Ukrainian overnight.

Among them: 5 enemy command posts, 1 fuel storage facility, 3 ammunition depots, as well as military personnel and equipment concentrated in Barvenkovo, Gulyai Pole, Kamyshevakha, Zelenoe Pole, Velikomikhailovka and Nikolaev.

Operational-tactical aviation hit 108 areas of concentration of Ukrainian manpower and military equipment.

In addition, 1 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle was shot down by an air-to-air missile near Buda.

Army aviation destroyed 8 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, as well as up to a company of enemy manpower near Pashkovo, Veseloe and Illichevka.

Missile troops struck with high-precision Iskander land-based missiles. 4 arms depots and Ukrainian military equipment were destroyed, as well as 3 areas enemy manpower concentration near Popasnaya, Yampol and Kramotorsk.

Russian artillery units hit 315 Ukrainian assets overnight.

18 command posts, 22 artillery batteries, 1 OSA-AKM anti-aircraft missile system, as well as 275 enemy strong points and areas of concentration of enemy manpower were hit.

Russian air defence means shot down 3 Ukrainian combat aircraft in the air: 2 MiG-29 fighters near Izyum and 1 Su-25 near Avdeevka.

11 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were also shot down in the air near Klimovo, Nevelskoe, Novotroitskoe, Izyum, Panteleimonovka, Sladkovodnoe and Yasnoe. 10 large-calibre rockets fired by Ukrainian multiple rocket launchers at Chernobaevka were intercepted.

In total, 139 aircraft, 483 unmanned aerial vehicles, 250 anti-aircraft missile systems, 2,326 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 254 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,004 field artillery and mortars, as well as 2,184 units of special military vehicles of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were destroyed during the operation.

This has now been going on daily for more than a month. While the precision of the above numbers is somewhat uncertain I do not think that they are exaggerated by much. Yesterday there was no particular heavy fighting and the equipment destroyed on that one day alone was already more than what the U.S. has in total promised to send.

That means that the military destruction and defeat of the Ukrainian forces in the country's east is all but assured.

What then is the strategy that government in Kiev and its overlords in Washington DC are following? Why has the Ukraine not given up? Why didn't it continue to negotiate with the Russian side?

Is their hope that their daily over the top 'Russia is losing' propaganda will create enough political momentum for a large scale NATO intervention?

That would end in a disaster for the NATO forces.

Russia is obviously prepared for it. It has so far held back large parts of its own forces. Russia has at least 12 tactical missile artillery brigades, each with 36 Iskander missile launchers and 144 fire ready missiles. Only three of the those brigades plus a third of two other ones have so far been committed:

Three brigades, or a total of 36 Iskander launchers (two missiles each plus two resupply missiles per launcher) were deployed to Belarus as part of the buildup to war in Ukraine. Two additional brigades (12 launchers) were also assigned to Russia's Southern Military District and moved forward in the area of Belgorod near the Russian border; and to the area of Krasnodar, south of Ukraine.

Most of the Russian airforce has likewise been held back.

On March 24 the Pentagon claimed that Russia was running out of precision munitions. However, if the Russian defense ministry report is correct, at least 16 precision air ground missiles and 7 Iskander were used just yesterday. To me that does not sound like 'limited supplies'.

Other issues:

Since Saturday Gonzalo Lira, who has been reported from Kharkov, is no longer reachable. He seems to have been captured or killed by the Ukrainian Gestapo-like SBU. Sadly I had expected that. Doing hours of Youtube live streams when your enemy controls the internet in your area is not very smart.

A picture of the damaged Russian cruiser Moscwa was published today.

bigger

The Russian cruiser was damaged last week and sunk. The ship is listing and so it must have additional damage below its waterline. The picture shows fire midships on its port side where two of its close-in weapons systems and their ammunition storages are. The ships crane is deployed right above that area. The large anti-ship missiles towards the bow and the S-300 air defense launchers behind the deckhouse seem intact. The port side life rafts are no longer where they were and must have been launched. That means that a significant part of the crew likely got off the ship alive before it sank.

The picture does not tell us what has happened. Was this an accidental ammunition explosion as Russia had first claimed or was the ship hit by Ukrainian (or British?) anti-ship missiles as the Ukraine is claiming? We will have to wait for further reports to know that.

Shawshank Redemption rocks. One of my favorite serious drama movies.
Ok, I’ll get out my semi-rusty air photo interp skills, pardon that my tape measure doesn’t have mm’s on it, that would be more precise.
The Ukie trenches are on average about 1/16th of an inch in the photo. Its go with no more than 2 meters wide, probably slightly less. The shell carters are typically slightly larger, maybe 50% larger so let’s just say the carters on average are 2.5 meters wide. Its soft ground over there, so more the shock would be absorbed by the wetness of the soil. Doubtful it was a big boy from a 152, they would be larger, but could a 80+ mm mortar do such holes in soft ground? If neither side has a 100 mm range weapons, then I would say 122 mm rockets.
That’s my guess. Please pour me another rye, neat…

My problem over the use of the word “liberal”, and the distorting of its meaning, is because the word has been demonized by the anti-democratic forces in our society, by re-definition, to confuse the populace. ” Liberal rules based order”, is one of those commonly used.
Again, here’s the definition. As I said before; Nothing, the empire does or says these days, even remotely resembles “Liberal”..

Thanks,
Yes I do understand that this is how its been. Russia is capitalist after all, I thought you and Bevin meant more recent behaviour during the current war.
My theory is that The Kremlin has been very cautious as to how many signals of bucking the system they were sending to the West. Knowing that this showdown was coming and wanting to be in the drivers seat when it happened.
Putin didn’t cause the oligarchical money drain and I’m not sure that he would have been able to do much more about it than he has done under the current pressures, sanctions etc.
I do not claim to understand the intricacies of global finance but I do understand it enough to know that its easier to claim that the Kremlin could have done better when we aren’t in the situation and said oligarchs have tremendous power in Russia. It seems to me that only Communism could effectively reign them in and Russia is not there yet. Even China does not yet constrain its oligarchs enough in the interests of the people in my opinion, but there again greater minds than mine have executed their incredible 5 year plans so I assume there is a reason for it.
Agree with Debs that the war is justified but that does not condone all the actions of the current regime. However like many here I feel that Putin sincerely cares about the people of Russia.
We’ll see.

I just realized one thing. AFU has long lines of logistical supplies under constant threat. Any spotted reinforcement is dead. The RF forces do not have that problem.
A war of attrition is running now and it is being waged by Russians on AFU. Each day without an all out offensive from Russia is a day of irreplaceable losses. Any move to reinforce the frontline means other losses. The material and the men won’t arrive at the front line in the shape they were at the start of the move.
Russia has time on her side in this battle. They keep the AFU busy enough to have it pinned and they “soften” them with plenty of ammo.
Maybe I’m stupid. I’m not even a layman in the field. I wonder how long it took me to realize that.

He raises the question of the unaccountable failure of the Russian state to take firm measures to counteract the sanctions and punish those engaged in an open campaign to destroy the economy and to reduce the living standards-still much reduced by the ongoing larceny introduced in the 1990s.
.
.
.
Nobody would suggest that Putin is a Fifth Columnist. But there is no doubt that it would be hard to contradict the theory that, if a Fifth Columnist were deliberately setting out to sabotage the economy, in the interests of the oligarchs,
.
.
.
The case can be made, indeed it is fairly obvious, that Russia is protecting the interests of is enemies, at the expense of its people. Which was the course that the Tsar and his Orthodox backers pursued in the half century before 1917.

This reminds of a piece from The Book that Shall Not be Named:

11. THIS HATRED WILL BE STILL FURTHER MAGNIFIED BY THE EFFECTS of an ECONOMIC CRISES, which will stop dealing on the exchanges and bring industry to a standstill. We shall create by all the secret subterranean methods open to us and with the aid of gold, which is all in our hands, A UNIVERSAL ECONOMIC CRISES WHEREBY WE SHALL THROW UPON THE STREETS WHOLE MOBS OF WORKERS SIMULTANEOUSLY IN ALL THE COUNTRIES OF EUROPE. These mobs will rush delightedly to shed the blood of those whom, in the simplicity of their ignorance, they have envied from their cradles, and whose property they will then be able to loot.
12. “OURS” THEY WILL NOT TOUCH, BECAUSE THE MOMENT OF ATTACK WILL BE KNOWN TO US AND WE SHALL TAKE MEASURES TO PROTECT OUR OWN.

(Caps are not mine)
Seems plausible so far, regarding the economic crises.
Further on, this passage suggests that the interests and property of whatever cabal serves as the antagonist in this story will be protected even while the rest suffer.
So if we are to give “The Forbidden Book” any credibility, we might entertain its suggestion that indeed, the interests of a 5th column within all governments (Russia included) will be protected above those of their people regardless.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to look more closely at whose interests exactly are being protected one both sides (Ukrainian and Russia) even while the war affects both countries ?

So, the building in the middle is maybe 60×30 feet, or 30×10 meters.
Is it a barn, shed or some other soft target; or was it a fortified structure?
I didn’t count all the holes in the ground, but there has to be at least 150 of them. That is a lot of firepower directed into a very small area.

The Ukranazi coup regime is not an independent authority, it is a rubber stamp for the Amerikastani. Therefore anything it says can be taken to be on instructions from Warshington. Which means that our is not suing for peace due to orders from its Amerikastani masters. Which of turn means that they are desperate to lei this going on as long as possible. However, the fact is that the coup regime is losing on the ground and this can’t go on much longer. Hence the Amerikastani Empire must have decided on some kind of false flag to blame for the defeat. What false flag? Why has Austrian chancellor Nehammer mentioned the use of nuclear weapons?

In his nightly address, comedian Zelensky speaks of Russia’s “demilitarization.”

The 54th day of our defense against the Russian invasion is coming to an end. The Russian army is not slowing down the use of missiles against Ukraine. Although it should have realized that it will be extremely difficult for it to restore the missile arsenal given even already imposed sanctions. Without imports, they can’t even do that. And when all the loopholes used to circumvent sanctions are closed, and when even tougher sanctions are imposed, restoring Russia’s missile capabilities will be unrealistic. That is, Russian missile strikes lead to only one thing – missile self-demilitarization of the Russian Federation. A similar process is taking place with other Russian weapons. Producing new artillery, aircraft, new helicopters and cruisers under sanctions will be a daunting task for Russia. . .here

I am also not convinced that Azovstal will necessarily fall…ever. The Syrians and Russo-Persians surrounded many Turkish outposts /bases In Syria, and the city of Idlib , yet they still remain extant. If they were surrounded and starved out , how then are they still there three years after the fact?

. . .from Ukraine News Agency
Zelensky gives EU ambassador completed part of the questionnaire for Ukraine to receive EU candidate status .

Andriy Yermak, the head of the president’s office, said Ukraine hopes to get EU candidate status after the meeting of the European Council in June 2022.
“Then talks on joining should start, which should be held using a speedy procedure,” Yermak said on Telegram on Monday.
The first part of the questionnaire has been sent to the European Commission, he said. “We are working on the second part and we will be waiting for a positive recommendation from the European Commission. The entire team of the president, the office and the government is working to do all that depends on us as soon as possible,” Yermak said.
According to earlier reports, the questionnaire consists of two parts, of which one contains political and economic criteria and the second one includes an evaluation of the compliance of Ukrainian legislation with the legal acts of the European Union.
“After receiving answers to the questionnaire from the Ukrainian side, the European Commission will present its opinion to the European Council as to whether Ukraine meets the Copenhagen criteria and recommend whether to grant the country candidate status. After that, at the meeting of the European Council, the EU leaders, based on the opinion of the European Commission, should make a final decision on granting us candidate status for EU membership,” the press service of Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration Olha Stefanishyna reported. . . . .here

You can train the troops elsewhere. You can send in equipment. BUT, how do you get troops and equipment to the front lines? Not in this war, ain’t going to happen.
Is this more about insuring there’s destabilizing forces lurking about, some more MH-17 stuff (to dazzle the gullible West into continuing to demonize Russia and, of course, to launder more money into the war contractors’ pockets)?

Cities can last longer because there’s always a way to smuggle stuff into a city, they can’t be totally surrounded every square foot.
Azovstahl OTOH is 2×2 miles. It can be surrounded, and more importantly surveilled 24×7. There’s no way to get in there if the surveillance is done properly.
So that leaves them with whatever supplies are on hand. If there is a water connection, the Russians will find it and stop it. If there is a power connection, the Russians will cut it. If there are generators inside, and I’m sure there are, it’s an industrial plant after all, it will depend on the fuel supplies, which won’t be replenished.
Two weeks ago, the troops holed up in there said they were running low on food and water. Even if it was a nuclear war bunker fully stocked for thousands of people, 2,500-3,000 troops in there are going to deplete those supplies quickly.
Plus, as Mercouris mentions today in his video, the constant bombing and shelling are going to take a toll of the nerves and lead to psychological problems for those confined there. Anyone who comes up top to fight will die. The rest will hunker down and fall apart within a week at most.
I do agree – collapse everything on top, seal up the ventilation shafts and any other hole and let them starve and commit suicide. If it doesn’t take much of a unit to maintain surveillance, one can wait, but I still say keep the bombing and shelling going until the plant is flattened.

There are no surrounded holdouts in Syria. Turkish held parts back on to Turkey and US held parts back on to Iraq.
Early in the war some Syrian garrisons were able to hold out with the help of airdrops.
The rats in their burrows can only hold out for as long as food and water lasts.

The US position is to give comedian Zelensky everything he asks for, which makes him and others (EU & NATO countries) happy. They can count on the US, and so can the US military-industrial complex.
So it’s not a case of winning or losing, the US hasn’t won a war in fifty years (or longer), it’s about playing the role of leader of the free world, and maintaining the profiteers who benefit from it.

The design is really old.
Plus, Russia has 2 OTHER ships of the same class, the Varyag, and the Marshal Ustinov.
At a pinch Russia can lease from China their hot new super heavy destroyer that’s the same tonnage as the Moskva at 12,000 tons, but with much more firepower and better electronics and radar. And China has 8 of these.

I counted about 7-8 hits on the lips of the trenches besides just the concussion of all the other ones going off. To me, whatever was pounding had a higher rate of fire and concentration so if the Rus have 120 mm mortars, I’m thinking 4-6 tubes could lay all of that down in fairly short order.
My dad’s cousin was with the U.S. Army in the Pacific War for much of the duration. He got one extended leave to Hawaii, the rest of the time he was island hoping/island resting. He never talked much about it, I think he had some serious PTSD that was never addressed. I think he died in his 60s. His brother contacted a surviving junior officer of “Art’s” and that man sent him about a 10-page letter talking about Art’s combat experiences. I have a copy of it somewhere in this mess. His lieutenant told a story about Art’s mortar team or squad laying down somewhere between 1,800 and 3,000 rounds (I can’t remember the number for sure) in the course of 3-4 day battle against the Japanese on one of the Philippine Islands in late 1944 or early ’45. I wonder how many tubes they burned up doing that contact…

I am also not convinced that Azovstal will necessarily fall

I predict that it will fall within a week. A surrounded bunker is no different from a coffin in the end. The Russians have all the options, those in the bunker, no matter how strong the walls, have zero options.

My layman’s opinion? Bomb the fracking out of it!

If this truly is a Soviet era nuclear bunker construction, not even bunker busters are going to be very effective.
There are at least five ways in:
Air – heavy non-dispersable gas through the ventilation system
Water – Flooding
Fire – Flooding with liquid napalm or something like it
Earth – Drilling down into the bunker
And the fifth element, Time …
I suspect the bulk of the delay on the Russian side is debating which option to use of the many. Perhaps they will try all of them at once …

Fromm Donbass Insider Telegram channel…

In the Kherson region, Russia established its own connection, seizing the towers of the Ukrainian telecommunications company Kyivstar.
Now users in the Kherson region can connect to a new network called “255 99”. Note that “255 99” identifies the mobile operator “Lugakom”, which operates in the LPR and DPR.
Another sign that the establishment of the KPR (Kherson People’s Republic) is fast approaching.

Look at the lighting and the production values. Look at the casting. This video was made weeks ago, possibly months ago. Similarly the Denis Prokopenko final plea was written some time ago, carefully, with no topical references. We are watching a script unwind.
It is pure show business. Each time it seems they have outdone themselves they conjure up another topper. Usually the third instance is the topper and you don’t go further. I can recall Groucho Marx and Jack Benny going for number four. These writers are not that good and it doesn’t matter. The audience believes any5hing. Six toppers? Why not? There is no reality here.
Even if the ventilation is still working, no vents blocked, all shafts intact, power supply on, even if the ceiling did not fall in, even if ten other factors are all implausibly wonderful, everyone underground at Avozstal is already dead. Repetitive concussions from the shelling. If the concussion did not kill them directly they are too scrambled to do daily chores, to organize feeding themselves if there were food. Can’t survive like that.
Next dispatch you see from deep in the bowels of the steel mill, that evocative dark satanic mill, please regard it as fake. It was written at Langley and maybe polished, given a little local color, at Rsezsow.

Don, yes, money laundering operation. But, if nothing ever seems to make it past the [un]loading docks then it’s a bit hard to keep the charade going: figure Russia can sit back and lob lots of missiles and do so for quite some time (don’t need troops to do this). Short-term you can con people on something like this but it’s going to fall apart as being something that’s “making a difference.” And as the economic pressure continue to mount for normal people the backlash is going to get some serious backlash (that would be the hope, the hope that people would finally figure out the con).

…Seems to me that this Russian military strategy with precision missile strikes has the potential of revolutionizing warfare as we know it, along with some traditional military items including tanks and planes. Of course heretofore the Russian missile batteries have not been subjected to attack, that’s a factor. Speaking of tanks, they’ve fallen victim of impressive anti-tank guided missiles. One situation of note in this situation is Iran, which has been denied an air force but has missiles so who needs F-35s even if they did work.

I had expectations that NATO would come into Ukraine to at least “protect” Western Ukraine and leave the eastern parts to the break away republics and the Russians. Problem is, what if the Russians attack the NATO incursion troops. After watching the invasion unfold and listening to various military pundits, hopefully somebody in NATO will stand up and say about any incursion “Are you crazy? The Russians will wipe us out the second we march troops into Ukraine.”

I have followed some of the Russian bloggers to understand life in Russia for a few years. This crisis really seems to have separated the true Russian wheat from the liberal woke Western-loving and Russian-hating chaff, with the latter mostly getting out of Russia to keep their youtube gig and be able to continue making videos bemoaning their own country.
Youtube took down all the Russian official government channels, so they should be gone in Russia very shortly I would assume. I think that Russia will be better off without these fifth-column liberal self-hating elements, this crisis has shown the true selves off some of them and those selves are not pleasant. Martyanov and some of his commentators have mentioned this opportunity to flush out all these liberal/Western elements through this crisis, Putin should use it to the full.

US anti tank missiles – going by the videos I have watched appear a bit feeble.
. . . from War On The Rocks
The Tank Is Dead: Long Live the Javelin, the Switchblade, the … ?

Is the value of the tank in modern warfare zilch? That’s the lesson many observers are taking from a flood of images depicting Russian tanks mired in the mud, their turrets blown off, having been ambushed and destroyed by Ukrainian forces armed with cheap anti-tank weapons. These images are often pointed to alongside feeds from Turkish-produced drones destroying tanks, seemingly with ease. After the recent Nagorno-Karabakh war, in which Russian-produced tanks were destroyed by the same model of drones, this is heady stuff for those ready to proclaim the death of the tank.
. . .Additionally, the Javelin is a fire-and-forget missile with lock-on before launch and automatic self-guidance, which enables the crew to displace to survive after firing. Again, a relatively cheap, easy-to-operate weapon that kills the expensive prime jewel of an adversary army. Images of Javelins have captured the public imagination because of their use in the hands of heroic Ukrainian fighters: a veritable slingshot for the Ukrainian David against the Russian Goliath. And the videos showing its devastating effects on hapless Russian armored columns are compelling. The Javelin’s effectiveness is already being used by some to justify ongoing controversial force-design decisions, e.g., the decision by the U.S. Marine Corps to get rid of its M1 Abrams tanks, that have recently appeared in War on the Rocks. . .here

Punctuating it with a few khinzal strikes along the Polish border would drive the point home.

Posted by: DidierF | Apr 19 2022 2:39 utc | 200<<< I don't think it will make a 'win or lose' difference. Short of World War 3 intervention of significant forces, this war was lost when the US and their EU followers went cancel culture on Russia (even tennis, chess, music, art...seriously?). Even an elemental thinker would know this would likely galvanize the Russian people (foremost, a galvanized Russia and its vastly superior military capability is not stoppable by Ukraine). IF the plan was to defeat Russia in Ukraine, this was one of the dumbest moves possible. So unless the US/West simply can't control their corporate media/deep state impulse, the aim isn't to win in Ukraine. Ukraine is just catnip, a stick to use to play fetch with a dog. IF the west wanted to win in the here and now in Ukraine they'd be sending superior weapons in significant numbers along with the critical people who are expert at using them. Training Ukrainians for a month in Poland in lesser weaponry isn't trying to win, IF they wanted to win they'd be sending much better air defense capabilities that could actually keep RF Air forces from so easily dominating. Control over there skies by a superior trained and equipped ground force? That is an easy prediction on what happens. IF they wanted to win they'd be sending many times over the amount of ammunition (to account for the certain losses that would occur on the way to "where it is needed", that air superiority problem again). IF they wanted to win they'd be providing armored vehicles in sufficient numbers that aren't already in the RF know how skill set and technology to neutralize. Either Russia gives up, the west provides far more and newer military technology, or the eastern part of Ukraine being taken by Russia is a foregone conclusion.

from what I have seen, Russian armour has only been destroyed in artillery ambushes. and that is mostly apc’s. javelin is useless against Russian tanks. In Syria, modernized Russian tanks were not taken out by ISIS AQ missiles. A number of cases there of tanks taking direct hits and remaining functional. No video coming out of Ukraine of Russian tanks being taken out by man portable missile systems. In Bucha The nazi’s did ambush a column of armored vehicles but that was with zeroed in heavy artillery (as in six inch) and drone targeting.

It is interesting to be in the thick of those events that have not happened for 75 years. The offensive in the Slavic direction is on the rise, the roar of cannon and rocket artillery, the work of tanks, rifle battles, the roar of aircraft.
Radeika hoarsely reports on the battles in the next village: up to two companies of enemy infantry are trying to counterattack, I see tanks, etc.
As usual, in the evening, another batch of captive dryers is brought from the front line (today the Delivery Service has already worked 2 times). It is interesting that every time they bring in dryers from different departments. To 95, 93, 25 brigades, 71 chasseurs from Kremenchug were added.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine have heavy losses. I think that if the prisoners are shown the speeches of Arestovich and a representative of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, in which they talk about the encirclement of the RF Armed Forces near Izyum or about settlements “liberated” by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, they will be very surprised.
Each prisoner, having recovered a little, says that the command abandoned them. Uses in the form of cannon fodder, throwing into battle immediately after arriving at the front. It is obvious that the Armed Forces of Ukraine need to make up at least part of the losses as soon as possible and, if possible, delay the time to prepare the next line of defense.
The cement for this frontier is the blood and meat of the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who are destroyed hourly by all means of destruction that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have at their disposal.
17:54
—————–
Time 23 hours, mutual artillery strikes do not stop from 5 in the morning. We are on the offensive, heavy fighting near the village of Dolgonkoye.
The enemy is well entrenched at this point, now it is exponentially destroyed. In response, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are driving a hodgepodge from different brigades to plug the gaps. I won’t be surprised if the total losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine today in our sector reach the figure of 500 people.
Heavy artillery and aviation strikes along the entire front, tanks and TOSs are working.

Thanks for the info though not happy to see it. I wrote that Lira was risking his life with his comments way back on March 6th and was surprised nothing happened sooner but it still remains awful to see play out.
One of those in the picture is former Azov Commander Maksym Zhorin, seen here boasting that Azov do not forgive lies and slander, and here gloating over the executed remains of a pro-Russian mayor in the, overwhelmingly pro-Russian, region of Luhansk, i.e. the execution by outsiders of someone who almost certainly represented the will of his community.
By itself this should be more than enough to open a criminal investigation against Zhorin in relation to Lira’s disappearance but unless the Chilean, or another, government puts some pressure on people I won’t expect anything to happen.

I’m old enough to remember the joystick guided cruise missile video from the Persian Gulf War. No mistaking that.

… Also using a form of command guidance were television-guided missiles, in which a small television camera mounted in the nose of the weapon beamed a picture of the target back to an operator who sent commands to keep the target centred in the tracking screen until impact. …

This is continuation of covid. We are at war, albeit mainly waged asymmetrically. First the USG was hi-jacked. Then we had covid obedience training and mass immune-system weakening. Now there is a geopolitical adjustment as the West is being isolated from the rest of the world having already had its manufacturing capabilities hollowed out and now being dependent on financial wizardry to keep going. USD hegemony has taken a huge hit from which will never recover so that financial foundation is a cooked goose soon to be burning into a crisp turning into smoke and ashes.

I agree and find this a pretty much a good summary of the actual situation. Connecting the dots like this is important. Thanks.

As to global warming, it might happen at some point but meanwhile two things to consider:
1) we are entering a serious cooling cycle like Daunton and Maunder minimums. Unlikely any warming will happen for another 2-3 decades.

These cycles are due to the Sun. Most people do not understand that our Sun is a variable star, the solar activity is measured via sunspot counts, and these reflect magnetic activity in the Sun. The “regular” solar cycles are ~11 years long (however this varies greatly) or more precisely ~22 years long, because the magnetic polarity flips with every 11 year cycle.
Every ~11 year the Sun goes through a minimum of solar activity, with few or no sunspots observed. But in a slightly longer time frame you have “grand solar minima”, and that is what the Dalton (not Daunton) and Maunder minima is about. We are now entering a new grand solar minimum, it will be called the Eddy minimum. What lies ahead are colder temperatures.
The Maunder minumum was a period of 70 years from 1645 until 1715 with almost no sunspots observed (there were quite a few capable observers), coinciding with the “little ice age” in Europe, the Thames river in London freezing over for moths in a row etc.
The Dalton minimum was another period of very low solar activity from about 1800 to 1820, with periods of extremely cold periods. Interestingly, this is also the time of Napoleons attack on Russia 1812-1813, illustrated in the famous Minard diagram, where the size of Napoleon’s army is illustrated by the width of the “line” as the attack progresses, he started with 422 000 men and returned with only 10 000 men. At the bottom of the diagram is also illustrated the temperatures during the attack, at times they had to endure -30C in present day Belorussia, causing the army to be decimated.
There was also a few years with exceptionally cold temperatures in Russia during WWII, something Hitler’s army experienced, so that’s 2 for 2.
Now that we are entering the Eddy minimum, and NATO is ready to repeat Napoleon and Hitler’s endeavours, it looks like a 3 for 3 to me.
As for actual climate change please consider this graph. During the time of the Norse vikings around the year 1000 AD we had the so called medieval warm period which was very beneficial and allowing the vikings to grow crops on Greenland and moreover (re-) discover America. However, this drowns in comparison to the effects of the Younger Dryas ~13000 years ago when the temperatures dropped ~15C overnight due to the comet fragment hitting the Laurentide Ice Sheed over present day Michigan, USA.

I posted that earlier from Ritter’s Telegram channel.
Indications are the Javelins require multiple hits to disable a Russian tank. Ritter shows a video of a damaged Russian tank which shows multiple hits. The tanks apparently all have reactive armor shaped charges on their sides that blow up when the tank senses an incoming missile, with the outward explosive force deflecting or destroying the incoming missile. I imagine the switchblade drones are equally ineffective unless it’s a top attack vertically down on the tank where there is no reactive armor.

Point of information which others can Brave® should they need to confirm, england lost most of its large battleships eg the battle of Jutland ww1 and the Prince of Wales plus the Hood in the Bismarck engagement (aka ‘battle of denmark strait) because of lousy ship architecture combined with lax enforcement of safety procedure.
Basically the cause of large battleships england lost in WW1 & WW2 were down to flash routes being left open between the gun turrets and the central magazine.
I haven’t followed much of the discussion on the Moskva sinking, apart from the skipper having died in the initial conflagration because that explosion was adjacent to the bridge, what I’m trying to say is that is it known whether materiel storage was close to the bridge? That would appear to be the most probable reason for the bridge going up. If a mob of H.E. was stored close to the bridge, the C&C center for the ship, that is a major failure by Russian Navy architects. I doubt the open flash route situation applied however, given that methods of discharging large shells, rockets and torpedos are vastly different than those used in WW1 & WW2.
If H.E. storage wasn’t located close to the bridge, that would indicate an own goal as being an unlikely source of the boat’s demise.

I don’t know if this post is real or not, or whether it’s a composite of various salvos, but supposedly it shows Russian artillery shelling going in the Donbass region. Awesome number of rockets being fired! Literally hundreds of them! Whatever they’re firing at definitely isn’t going to survive.

A while ago I decided not to engage with anthropogenic climate change deniers, I will continue with that policy. My life is better for it.

Yes, this is what cancel culture is about. When convictions are challenged with facts, call all opponents ‘deniers’ instead of adressing the issues, then ‘cancel’ them.

NOTHING the West is saying, or doing, has anything to do with “liberal”. Could we please call what the West does, and says by it’s real name? “Corporate Fascism”….

Thank you, this is not only correct, but important to turn around. We are subject to Orwellian Newspeak, and it is done deliberately to disable proper discussion.
Newspeak not only eliminates “unnecessary” words, but it also promotes a narrowing of thought and, therefore, awareness. The idea behind Newspeak is that, as language must become less expressive, the mind is more easily controlled. Through his creation and explanation of Newspeak, Orwell warns the reader that a government that creates the language and mandates how it is used can control the minds of its citizens.

Note that “1,214 enemy manpower concentrations” hit last night.
And yet, the Russian MoD will only certify around 23,000 Ukrainian casualties since the start of operations! Cassad talks about 41,000. I tend to believe the upper number. If you hit 1,214 “manpower concentrations” – even it’s only two guys in a vehicle – that’s over 2,000 dead in one night! The LDR/DPR have been reporting 20 guys here, 50 guys there every day for 50 days, that’s another 2,000 at least. The Ukies lost at least 4,000 in Mariupol. With low level drones, I imagine it’s easier these days to get accurate battle damage reports after a strike, but still.
So I think the MoD number is just “confirmed kills”. Reminds me of the movie “The Blue Max” where the WWI pilot shot down a plane, then dragooned a German sargeant to drive him around looking for it, until his superior dragged him aside and chewed him out for wasting the sargeants’s time, telling him “Confirmed means confirmed by spotters!”

I’m not sure I agree with you. If we take part of the definition of liberalism as being the rights of the individual over the collective and including the right to private property, then its easy to see that liberalism corrupted easily becomes an unhealthy focus on individual rights to the point of destructive greed and to the exclusion and detriment of collective human rights.
Corporate fascism is simply a further development of liberalism. Is it inevitable? All we know is that it keeps happening and the “good liberal” capitalism with a “free market economy” never seems to materialise other than to the benefit of the same old ruling class.
I don’t claim my ideas are right, this is just the way I see western liberalism. It’s an extreme focus on the individual which many Eastern and Indigenous cultures do not have and are better for it

This analysis comes from a telegram channel which is either working for or being published by Southfront w/o attribution. The analysis concerns the promised Reaper drones, thankfully, not many of them due to the exorbitant costs (hundreds of millions per drone). Expected delivery – if not bombed by the Russians before that – is about 10 or 12 for this phase of the terror war that the ukies will start on Russian territory, most likely.
https://t.me/atomiccherry/433, yanded translation + fixes

The most important news of recent weeks has been the US decision to supply Ukraine with weapons capable of striking military infrastructure located directly on the territory of the Russian Federation.
Colleagues suggested that it would be the MGM-140 OTRK (https://t.me/genshab/552 ), however, in reality we are talking about a much more effective, functional and dangerous weapon – the MQ-9 Reaper UAV.
This is by no means a random choice – American drones are multi-purpose weapon platforms that are many times superior in their capabilities, for example, (than) the Bayraktar TB2 already used by the (Ukranian) Air Force.
The MQ-9 Reaper is structurally sharpened for operations in conditions of large-scale military conflicts with active opposition from echeloned air defense. On its board it carries a multispectral reconnaissance and targeting station (radar, infrared camera, laser target illumination system), but what is especially important is that the drone has an irradiation warning station, a jamming station and means of countering missiles with a radio command or infrared guidance system (dipoles, infrared traps, etc.).
The Reaper can be used as an aerial electronic warfare platform or, for example, as a helicopter hunter – a wide range of weapons and modular container equipment allows you to fit any serial UAV to perform a specific combat mission.
During the 52 days of the war, the (Ukranian) Air Force has gained tremendous experience in the use of attack UAVs, and has well-trained operators who can use the MQ-9 without any retraining (this distinguishes it favorably from the same ballistic missiles that could be supplied as an alternative). The American drone has a standard NATO Stanag 4586 interface, also used in the Turkish Bayraktar familiar to the Air Force, and 90% of its maintenance operations can be performed even by completely untrained personnel with a minimum number of tools.
In practice, this means the following: The Ukrainian Air Force will not need either long-term training or training for the use of the Reaper UAV. They can use them immediately after delivery, expanding both their intelligence capabilities at the operational level, and launching attacks on the Russian border military and civilian infrastructure (in particular, air defense facilities, railway nodes, fuel storage facilities) with further penetration deep into the territory of the Russian Federation (https://t.me/atomiccherry/421 ).
This is not an exaggeration, but only a dry statement of facts that have long been proven by practice – the MQ-9 is able to take off in Kiev, get to the Moscow region, launch a series of missile and bomb attacks and return back. Its flight range is 1,900 km, and the time spent in the air is 27 hours. The combat load of the drone allows you to destroy a tank company using several types of high-precision weapons in one flight, without entering the zone of destruction of short-range air defense systems.
In addition, it is necessary to add (that there will be) extensive cooperation between the (Ukranian) Air Force and NATO intelligence. The Alliance’s extensive intelligence collection and analysis capabilities will allow for a multiple increase in the capabilities of strike UAVs, choosing the time, place and target of the strike.
This is an intellectual war, which Igor Dimitriev recently wrote about perfectly (https://t.me/russ_orientalist/10648 ).
Dangerous, and not well understood over the past 50 years in Russia, it (the intelectual war) is preparing to invade our territory with a fusion of high technology, analysis and strategy – and it can no longer be ignored.

Don’t be too impressed by destruction lists. This has the flavor of McNamara’s updates in the Vietnam war. Dumber than this can only be lists of munitions fired and explosions recorded.
In WWI on the occasion of one offensive 4 MILLION artillery rounds were fired along a front of at most 75km. That’s about 50 shells per meter of front. It did not break the enemy.

Given that Russia is well equipped with anti-air attack missiles what is it about the MQ-9 Reaper which makes it immune to being shot down? I seem to recall that Iran shot one down a year or so ago much to the amazement of the US. I think its main defence was flying at a great height which the Iranians proved was no defence at all.

That means on average over ~55 days the ukrainian average casualties per day is
Low estimate: 425
High estimate: 759
These are extreme numbers no matter how you look at it. It is likely the casualties per day is increasing rather than decreasing now. Then add those who surrender. It is difficult to see this lasting for very long.

It looks like Nato troops are building up along the borders with Ukraine, in what is billed as a humanitarian cause. There could be more to it than this. Maybe the Nato troops will move into Ukraine when the clear put of the Nazi’s in Donbas begins.
“The head of the US military rang up his Romanian colleague on Monday to coordinate “humanitarian and security” assistance to Ukraine and get an update on the NATO battle group that France is setting up in the region right across the Ukrainian border, the Pentagon has confirmed.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called Romanian Defense Minister Vasile Dincu on Monday morning to “continue coordinating our assistance” to Ukraine, the Pentagon said in a readout of the call. The two “shared a sense of urgency ahead of a likely Russian military offensive in eastern Ukraine,” the Pentagon said.”

@ boo, 284
This source quotes the cost per unit at 120 Million:
https://nation.time.com/2012/02/28/2-the-mq-9s-cost-and-performance/
That’s hilarious as it is the same as the cost of an F35 but less survivable once detected.
The only effect will be to radicalize the Russians into a state they should have been in from the beginning and providing them with experience with this weapons platform.

Are there any conflicts MQ-9 Reaper have been used against an adversary who has complete air superiority?
As far as I can tell it’s usually employed against enemies who have no high altitude air defences.
How likely is it the Russians don’t some have very specific defences (ECM ?) to deal with it and similar armed UAVs

Are there any conflicts MQ-9 Reaper have been used against an adversary who has complete air superiority?

Can’t speak specifically about the MQ-9 but a quick survey of the last 21 years of drone use in the middle east would suggest that complete air superiority is not not even needed.
Iran and Hezbollah’s electronic attacks on “Reaper class” drones have been effective at least some of the time, so given Russias ECM capability we should see US drones of that class and similar literally dropping out of the sky ‘en masse’ if they venture close to the battle zone …

Not sure if anyone’s posted this, yet, but Kadyrov (Chechen leader) came out with a statement today that’s pretty provocative and details what his vision of the process Ukraine is headed for:

Kadyrov: “I don’t understand a lot of things when great politicians, political scientists and strategists make statements that we need to negotiate, we need to withdraw troops from Donetsk and Luhansk, as if there is power in Ukraine. There is no vertical of power. There is no president, no supreme commander, nothing at all. There is a bandit group there, which at one time was with us, in the Chechen Republic. With the roots you need to destroy these Nazis, banderlog, shaitans. After that, it is necessary to appoint an interim acting head of the region, after that, how can we start forming a vertical of power in the Chechen Republic, ask the people what they want, how they want to live on, what are their main problems, as Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin used to be gave the opportunity to our Chechen people”.

Maybe the game isn’t about air superiority at all. Perhaps its just Afghanistan all over again where the war companies sell their expensive toys to the US government for an inflated price which in turn sells it to the Ukraine government which has no money to pay for it. Politicians etc get paid their usual commissions and bribes and the US taxpayer funds it all. Or maybe Biden expects Ukraine to lose so Russia takes over and they can be charged for Ukraine’s defence – out of their confiscated foreign exchange reserves.
