Actually “held back” is very bizarre for a native English speaker. Did he really mean “to remain in the background” or whatever? Or rather “held on”, gave no ground.

Seems like he was trying to write ‘were’ and failed and Twitter didn’t light it up as a spelling mistake. The English sentence ‘we held back’ makes no sense in context, however, ‘were held back’ makes perfect sense.

I think that in the local language they would say “we kept/held our positions”, and in English, “held back” seems to mean not showing all you got, which is actually normal under circumstances — you do not disclose all artillery positions by returning fire etc.
The blown bridges are becoming a serious humanitarian problem for Ukrainian cities. After all, in a pinch military vehicles go off road, if slower in the case of supplies, but civilian deliveries like foodstuff or proverbial toilet paper (and soap? you can wash your bum if you got water and soap, toilet paper is not really necessary) are increasingly impossible.

Our source in the OP said that the General Staff confirmed the information to the Office of the President of Ukraine about the downed helicopter near Mariupol, in which the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Azov were evacuated from the city, but on the way back the helicopter was shot down.

First, it can be done only in one special bank, EU/US would slap sanctions upon it and that’s how it would end – no legal way to pay and no gas for EU.
BTW, did you noticed one of the last items of the decree? The decree comes to force effective TOMORROW. Yet Putin “recommends” to GazPromBank to define the procedure of payments in the next 10 days.
1. in case GazPromBank delivers in time, how many more days would it be needed for EU partners to figure out some modus operandi to comply with both GazPromBank’s rules and EU rules?
2. what if those rules would be intentionally incompatible with EU rules? i did not read in the decree any recommendation for compatibility.
3. what if GazPromBank would not be up to *recommendations* and would not set the procedure even on the April 11th?

More interesting details from the testimony of the captured officer of the GUR.
1. Took off from the airfield in Dnepropetrovsk.
2. There were 4 Mi-8 NGU under the cover of 1 Mi-24.
3. Landed in the port of Mariupol.
4. Presumably ammunition was unloaded in Mariupol.
5. Then the wounded were loaded.
6. 2 “Stingers” worked on his helicopter, the 1st went into a trap, the 2nd destroyed a car that fell from 7 meters.
7. He survived because he was sitting at the door behind a machine gun.
From other posts, the two copters were shot by Stingers. The air defense was not activated since they were flying very low (this matches the 7m above).

Optimistic option is that all deliveries already pre-paid would be allowed to be completed.
Frankly, in the shoes of any western gas consumer i’d pre-pay as much as i can as soon as Putin started to spin rubbles, or maybe even at the very start of the war, preempting EU sanctions.
OTOH it is long suspected that major EU gas enterprises are in lockstep with GazProm. Unable to rebell against woke/US rulers of EU thay pasively-agressively sell them the rope to hang upon. If that view is correct, then EU major energy companies would behave exactly to comply with Moscow’s terms and miscomply with Brussel’s term, exactly aiming at being forcibly stopped by EU and point fingers.

I think its just a matter of time before the US and collective West start making the sanctions look like Swiss cheese as they realize that they simply cannot do without many of Russia’s exports, probably one commodity at a time through gritted teeth. On the natural gas front I can only assume that the Europeans believe that Putin will be overthrown before the next winter sets in, or Volkswagen starts to close down some of its factories. I see massive social turmoil in Europe if their leaders don’t blink in the face of the oncoming freight train. Interesting that the cut off will happen in the last weeks of the French presidential campaign. The German govt. is a coalition one which could easily fall apart triggering new elections.
There is also a no confidence vote coming in Pakistan, but that may be as much about Imran Khan falling out with the military and mismanaging the economy than any interference from Western nations because of Khan’s refusal to sanction Russia.
