I’m sure by “we,” he didn’t mean the Ukrainian Army or the neoNazis. He meant the CIA.

fun indeed!

Posted by: annie | Mar 31 2022 11:30 utc | 2

Actually "held back" is very bizarre for a native English speaker. Did he really mean "to remain in the background" or whatever? Or rather "held on", gave no ground.

Posted by: Laguerre | Mar 31 2022 11:52 utc | 3

Seems like he was trying to write 'were' and failed and Twitter didn't light it up as a spelling mistake. The English sentence 'we held back' makes no sense in context, however, 'were held back' makes perfect sense.

Posted by: Altai | Mar 31 2022 12:07 utc | 4

Posted by: Laguerre | Mar 31 2022 11:52 utc | 3

I think that in the local language they would say "we kept/held our positions", and in English, "held back" seems to mean not showing all you got, which is actually normal under circumstances -- you do not disclose all artillery positions by returning fire etc.

The blown bridges are becoming a serious humanitarian problem for Ukrainian cities. After all, in a pinch military vehicles go off road, if slower in the case of supplies, but civilian deliveries like foodstuff or proverbial toilet paper (and soap? you can wash your bum if you got water and soap, toilet paper is not really necessary) are increasingly impossible.

Posted by: Piotr Berman | Mar 31 2022 12:15 utc | 5

Fat finger mistake he really meant to say ... 'we held [them] back'

Posted by: Christian J. Chuba | Mar 31 2022 12:16 utc | 6

In the third tweet Rivers says what he meant to say: `they' held them back not 'we'

Comment 3, 4 and 6 are thus wrong with their interpretations.

Posted by: b | Mar 31 2022 12:23 utc | 7

Dan River is down with the Moshiach. "We" means those who are with the Moshiach.

Posted by: Robert Browning | Mar 31 2022 12:39 utc | 8

Heading west and blowing up the bridge, sounds like the definition of "retreat" in common English.

Tonight's news... "Ukrainian force consolidated gains west of Kyiv"

Very fun to read this a.m.

#1. They (who are they?) attacked but we(who are we?) held back.
#2. They (who are they?) attacked but were held back. (my favourite)
#3. They (we never know who "they" are) attacked but they (which they is this anyway?)held back.

Communication is man's most difficult task.

Posted by: lizzie dw | Mar 31 2022 13:03 utc | 12

What the original tweet reveals is that he, a western journalist, takes sides openly and fully identifies with one side.

Considering that these people lie hideously none-stop and have made war crimes against Russians pretty much acceptable - in fact they have practically promoted such actions against the Russians - through their horror porn propaganda, it is about time for the Russians to declare the western presstitutes active participants in such criminal events and therefore terminate their protected status.

Conspirologies speculating widly.

1. Ukraine is sending helicopter suicide missions to extract something or someone from Mariupol. Reportedly only today three aircrafts were downed and one barely fled away

2. Macron is hanging to the phone with Putin, call after call, desperately like a pregnant maiden seeking for a last moment shotgun wedding. France, reportedly, insists on starting "humanitarian mission" in Mariupol togather with Poland and Turkey.

3. Rumor: chief of France Army Intelligence is fired (de jure it would be made later, but allegedly the decision is already made)

4. Puttin on a stolen police hat: Hey, there! Who had seen the famous discourse-monger Henri Bernard-Levi last???

We'll know the answer(s) pretty soon, but my gut feeling is prolly there are no French advisors on board, just that Macron as the closest (hehe) EU leader to Putin tried to use his leverage, if any, to extract the Azov top bras.

From the article
"The second one went up in smoke but continued on its way. Reports are now coming in that the landing site of the second helicopter has been found. There are three survivors from the crew and passengers of the second helicopter."

Does that mean the survivors were captured along with the helicopter?
What / who would justify that amount of effort to recover?

My question:

if the UA are kicking RU away from Kiev, how are they doing it with blown bridges?

All the bridges across the Irpin River seem to have been demolished, so how is the Ukrainian Army able to attack the Russian Army to their west. It's not as if destroying bridges these days requires special equipment or great heroism.

Thanks a lot for the heads up!

Maybe a starting point here
https://t.me/mod_russia_en/510

▫️A study of the new material by Russian experts of the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Troops identified specific officials who had been involved in the creation of the biological weapons components.

▫️These are the heads of units and staff of the US Department of Defense, as well as its main contracting companies. As the ongoing journalistic investigations in the Western press show, these campaigns were directly linked to the son of the current US president, Hunter Biden.

Agree this should be covered separately!

the existence of these documents prove that the Pentagon really thought there would be no Russian attack, despite the US propaganda saying the opposite right before the actual Russian operation. otherwise they would have disposed of these documents. chalk it up to incompetence as well. there is always that.

Here in the UK, the media has Russian forces on the backfoot, and surrendering to Ukrainian forces because they don't want to fight, its laughable, though there will be those less well informed who will believe this wild exaggerating disinformation.

Meanwhile you'd better not have a flag that resembles the Russian flag or else.

"The Ukrainian authorities requested that Slovenian diplomats in Kiev remove their national flag from the front of the embassy, claiming it is too similar to the Russian flag, it was revealed on Wednesday.

“When we arrived in Kiev, it was quite windy, and when we proudly raised the Slovenian and European flags back, they fluttered in the wind,” Slovenian Chargé d’Affaires Bostjan Lesjak said in an interview with TV Slovenia.

But two days after Lesjak’s arrival in Kiev, the wind died down and the flags dropped to the pole. That’s when the Slovenian flag, according to the chargé d’affaires, started to resemble the Russian flag."

On the gas for Rubles thing, RT is still reporting that Rubles will be required for hostile countries, I'm beginning to think that the articles that said they didn't need Rubles weren't entirely true.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday that the country is changing the payment mechanism for certain exports, starting with natural gas on April 1. The measure effects countries which have imposed sanctions on Russia in connection with Ukraine and froze Moscow’s foreign reserves.

The ‘unfriendly’ states Putin referred to are the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Switzerland, the 27 nations of the European Union, and a number of smaller countries."

The head of French Intelligence has been sacked for not predicting the Russian operation in Ukraine, add in that French forces are to leave Mali, the Golden Goose, and other high ranking French military personnel could find themselves out the door.

"France has the world's 4th largest gold reserves of 2,436 tons (worth $112bn), but not a single gold mine to its name. Mali does not have any gold reserves, but is the 3rd biggest producer in Africa about 71 tonnes of gold from 860 gold mines Where did France get all this gold"

"The French government has decided to replace the head of the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DRM), national media reported on Wednesday citing sources. General Eric Vidaud was fired just seven months after getting the job, allegedly for being blindsided by Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

Vidaud was appointed military intelligence chief last summer. He previously headed the French Special Operations Command (COS)"

There are reports that two French DGSE operatives were on one of the downed helicopters and both died. Also, 20 US and British advisors to the Azov Nazis are supposedly trapped in Mariupol. If this is true, it'll be interesting to see what spin they put on it.

The decree - unofficial text in Russian - makes me raise few eyebrows.

First, it can be done only in one special bank, EU/US would slap sanctions upon it and that's how it would end - no legal way to pay and no gas for EU.

BTW, did you noticed one of the last items of the decree? The decree comes to force effective TOMORROW. Yet Putin "recommends" to GazPromBank to define the procedure of payments in the next 10 days.

1. in case GazPromBank delivers in time, how many more days would it be needed for EU partners to figure out some modus operandi to comply with both GazPromBank's rules and EU rules?
2. what if those rules would be intentionally incompatible with EU rules? i did not read in the decree any recommendation for compatibility.
3. what if GazPromBank would not be up to *recommendations* and would not set the procedure even on the April 11th?

Posted by: Arioch | Mar 31 2022 16:09 utc | 52

@Antioch.

i see you’re still at the bargaining stage. putin was crystal clear. rubles or no gas — tomorrow. the e.u. was just crystal clear in turn — no rubles, no “blackmail,” no gas.

europe’s economy will collapse and russia will move into eastern europe with blanketing tactical nuclear strikes, almost guaranteed.

I have this discussion with my wife
all the time. (It has been going on for decades.)
She has a terrible habit of saying "they, he, her, there".
The previous sentences dictate who the "he" or "there" is,
or rather, they should.

"Bob went over to see his grandfather. He is hard of hearing."

Now, guess which one is hard of hearing. With my wife it could be either.
Based upon past experience I then have to ask her which one is deaf.
"Bob, of course!", could be the answer, or sometimes the grandfather.

"Harold and Ginny are going from their house to Marvel Restaurant.
We are going to meet them there."

We get in the car and I set out for Marvel Restaurant.
"Where are you going! Their house is that way!", my exasperated wife says.
I respond, "you said we were going to join them at the restaurant."
"No I didn't. Weren't you listening to me?"

More details on those 4 (+1) helicopters:

https://t.me/boris_rozhin/38436

More interesting details from the testimony of the captured officer of the GUR.

1. Took off from the airfield in Dnepropetrovsk.
2. There were 4 Mi-8 NGU under the cover of 1 Mi-24.
3. Landed in the port of Mariupol.
4. Presumably ammunition was unloaded in Mariupol.
5. Then the wounded were loaded.
6. 2 "Stingers" worked on his helicopter, the 1st went into a trap, the 2nd destroyed a car that fell from 7 meters.
7. He survived because he was sitting at the door behind a machine gun.

From other posts, the two copters were shot by Stingers. The air defense was not activated since they were flying very low (this matches the 7m above).

"freudian slips"? we practice our speech as part of our life ethos, thus the "slip" of the tongue becomes the most significant moment in discourse, when one goes "off script", which, under capitalism, means not simply regurgitating what the boss just said.

this dude is a practiced liar, he lives inside a bubble of ruling class discourse wherein his job is to sprinkle M&M's and Twizzlers over this pile of crap and shovel it into the mouths of the not-ruling class and hope we all swallow. He neither knows nor cares when he's lying or not, for "all the world's a stage." i imagine this guy has anxiety about whether he masturbates correctly or not, whether Big B approves of how he downed his last shot of whiskey, whether he taps his toes in the approved manner when he listens to Katy Perry, whether he should laugh or not at "black on black violence" at the Oscars, if it's ok to make fun of Applebee's.

"freedom tastes of reality" - the who. more sheep "fighting" over pronouns, while modern english has nuked the distinction between "you" and "you", making "you" the most abused word in English, w/ "we" being 2nd.

It helps when the people believe you are doing the right thing.

"President Vladimir Putin’s ratings have increased among Russians since the start of a military operation in Ukraine, a new polling has showed.

According to the nongovernmental sociological organization Levada Center on Thursday, the polling showed 83 percent of Russians approve of Putin's actions, up from 71 percent in early February.

Fifteen percent of the respondents said they did not approve of the president, down from 27 percent.

Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and the Russian government as a whole saw an improvement in their approval ratings, the poll also showed."

I kindly disagree with that. Here is the post from a telegram channel which is used by the Russian military - a lot of times Borish Rozhin back links/refers to him when there are eye witnesses/photos/videos of movements of ukie forces and coordinates for confirmation by tactical intelligence on the ground. Here is what this "guy" comments (yandex translated):

The names of the servicemen became known (https://t.me/Doninside/11641 ) The DPR, who destroyed two Mi-8 helicopters from the captured "Stingers" from the four that partially evacuated today (https://t.me/rybar/30146 ) high-ranking officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the national regiment "Azov".

The downed hellies were over Rybatsky to the southwest of Mariupol and came along the route from Zaporozhye.

Unfortunately, there is no talk of any saturated air defense in that area. Especially, in relation to army aviation: specifically, this (helicopter) group went at extremely low altitudes outside the radar field zone.

From RT

However, Habeck told reporters that existing gas contracts between European nations and Russia, which were negotiated in euros, “must be observed.” Habeck reiterated an earlier statement from the Group of Seven major economies, which read, “We will under no circumstances accept paying for gas deliveries in a currency other than the contractually agreed currency.”
One important lesson I learned from my late father: Never issue an ultimatum to yourself. Habeck seems to have missed that lesson and he will regret it.

I read something about the other day. Taliban are signing up to China's belt and road and China will extend or widen the Pakistan section into Afghanistan. I think it was Lavrov at that meeting by all the neighbors of Afghanistan in China a day or so back said under no account would US be allowed back into the region.

Aquilea #49

Capture or kill all, and those surviving sent to gulags in secret, like " The Man in the Iron Mask" of Dumas' novel. Tell the world about their capture ,killing and incarceration as above, but via rumours, leaks etc. Be like Israel and never admit it officially. That will send rivers of ice down the spines of future troublemakers.

An surprising admission, is it any wonder then that the West can't flood Ukraine with weapons quickly enough.

"Russian forces have almost completely destroyed the Ukrainian defense industry and are “finishing off” the civilian one, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Alexey Arestovich, claimed on Thursday."

@ptb, 74.

it’s not an issue of the price of gas and whether europe can afford it; it’s an issue of whether there’s any gas at all. the price could be 0, and it wouldn’t matter, because there won’t be any gas.

This is the woman that Lavrov called an idiot, or words to that effect, I can no longer view Sputnik news in the UK even on my internet devices, not on Google or Microsoft's Edge or DuckDuckGo. Tass news is also becoming difficult to access though not impossible yet.

"A new round of sanctions on Russia, announced by UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on Thursday, will target Russian state funded TV-Novosti, which runs RT, and Rossiya Segodnya, which operates Sputnik News.

"The embargoes were imposed against what London described as “Russian propagandists and state media who spread lies and deceit about Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.” The UK authorities offered no evidence to back up this assertion.

Earlier in March, British media regulator Ofcom stripped broadcasting licenses from Russian media outlets, claiming that they weren't in a position to cover the Ukraine crisis. London's own state-controlled BBC has covered all conflicts involving the UK in living memory, including the illegal 2003 invasion of Iraq."

The stupidity of the West is there for all to see and for Russia to take full advantage of, as the West relaxes sanctions on vital products they need from Russia, thus revealing clearly the Wests pressure points, in this case its fertilizer.

"Washington has eased sanctions on Russian agricultural products, including fertilizers, placed on Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine. The move aims to protect US farmers from a shortage of chemical products as food prices in the country continue to soar.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Treasury recently published a new general license dated March 24, which effectively removed restrictions on the import of Russian fertilizers."

If not on all of your devices - then install VirtualBox, create any virtual Linux computer inside, just for the sake of surfing uncensored internet, and install PsiPhon there inside it. Turn that virtual machine on to read some news inside it, then turn it off.

A petty raid by the European authorities on the Russian gas firm Gazprom offices in Germany, maybe they were looking for free gas possibly under one of the desks, or on a filing cabinet.

"The German offices of Russian state energy giant and major gas exporter Gazprom were searched by European officials, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing sources that “wished to remain anonymous.”

The raid was conducted amid the investigation into the company’s role in the rise of natural gas prices in Europe, which have soared over the past month.

Authorities searched the offices of Gazprom's subsidiaries in Germany, Gazprom Germania and Wingas, which, according to Bloomberg, account for roughly 20% of Germany’s gas supplies."

we'll see.

Optimistic option is that all deliveries already pre-paid would be allowed to be completed.

Frankly, in the shoes of any western gas consumer i'd pre-pay as much as i can as soon as Putin started to spin rubbles, or maybe even at the very start of the war, preempting EU sanctions.

OTOH it is long suspected that major EU gas enterprises are in lockstep with GazProm. Unable to rebell against woke/US rulers of EU thay pasively-agressively sell them the rope to hang upon. If that view is correct, then EU major energy companies would behave exactly to comply with Moscow's terms and miscomply with Brussel's term, exactly aiming at being forcibly stopped by EU and point fingers.

Yes, that is the best approach.
It is my impression that Putin/Russia generally do as they say. It's that we hear what we want.

I think it was also said that Gazprom will need to develop plan for shutting supply to countries as required. Maybe it is not simple.

Some shift in Putin's rhetorics. Can we call it "downgrade" ?

https://aftershock.news/?q=node/1088587

However, western states made their move, and we should, of course, respond to it. I suggest to accept that in near future there would be no interactions that used to be with our former partners. We are not going to close up from anyone, we won't be a sealed country, but we should be rooted in the reality that happenned to come.

"our western partners" ==> "our former partners"

"The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Treasury recently published a new general license dated March 24, which effectively removed restrictions on the import of Russian fertilizers."

I think its just a matter of time before the US and collective West start making the sanctions look like Swiss cheese as they realize that they simply cannot do without many of Russia's exports, probably one commodity at a time through gritted teeth. On the natural gas front I can only assume that the Europeans believe that Putin will be overthrown before the next winter sets in, or Volkswagen starts to close down some of its factories. I see massive social turmoil in Europe if their leaders don't blink in the face of the oncoming freight train. Interesting that the cut off will happen in the last weeks of the French presidential campaign. The German govt. is a coalition one which could easily fall apart triggering new elections.

There is also a no confidence vote coming in Pakistan, but that may be as much about Imran Khan falling out with the military and mismanaging the economy than any interference from Western nations because of Khan's refusal to sanction Russia.

Russia's permanent representative says Germany is implementing a biological program in Ukraine
Permanent Representative Gatilov: documents confirm that Germany has a biological program in Ukraine

Permanent Representative of Russia to the DepartmentUN in GenevaGennady Gatilov announced the availability of documents confirming the fact that Germany is implementing its own military-biological program in Ukraine. This is reported on the website Russian Foreign Ministry.

According to him, the purpose of this program is to study the potential of deadly diseases in Eastern Europe, such as Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever. The diplomat also said that, in addition to scientific research and experiments in Ukraine, biomaterials and strains of dangerous biological agents were transferred from its territory to military laboratories in the United States, Great Britain, Georgia, Germany and other countries.

Previously onThe Russian Defense Ministry said that volunteers were infected with viruses in Ukrainian laboratories. Chief of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Troops of the Russian Armed ForcesIgor Kirillov clarified that the Russian Federation has documents that confirm the fact of conducting research with an unknown risk to the life and health of participants, as well as concealing the identity of the subjects.

Yes, Arioch, the decree comes into effect tomorrow. The procedure of payment has been defined to take place over the next ten days, because V. Putin is a nice guy and for no other reason.

To all the rest of your questions:

1. No rubles, no gas.
2. I’m sure the “unfriendly nations” will rapidly come up with all kinds of constructive and creative solutions to solve those problems.
3. If not, they will be required to revert to Item 1 above, and then begin the procedure again.

However, perhaps the Russian Federation will experience a “change of heart” as soon as those $300 billion of their central bank assets stolen from them by western banks are kindly unfrozen, with many deep apologies.

Till then, you’ll either drown in your “what if’s” or else crawl out of that hole by yourself.
