Disarming Ukraine – Day 6

Just a few points (which I may add to later on):

  • Russia's military operational security seems to work well as little is leaking out about the positions of its forces.
  • Mariupol in the south is now encircled. The Ukraine has lost all access to the sea of Azov.
  • After a warning that it would attack 'psychological operation' infrastructure in Kiev a Russian plane bombed the electricity substation that feeds the studios and media centers around the TV-tower of Kiev.

You cannot make this stuff up.
At today's security council meeting, Lukashenka – while lying about “surgical operation” – showed what looks like an actual invasion map.

Lukashenko has not been a quite successful president of Belarus for 26 years because he is dumb. If you believe that the picture shows the  actual plan you probably should go back to school.

Russia is more that 11% of the world’s landmass. As long as the person being asked points to land instead of ocean they have better than a 1 in 10 chance of hitting Russia just by accident. If they can guess the northern hemisphere of the planet and the side opposite the US then the odds of pointing to the wrong country just by blindly slapping their finger somewhere on a globe goes way down.

I agree. We know the pandemic served a crucial role in shutting down the real economy to prevent contagion from the interbank lending crisis in 2019 and produced a compliant population who quickly adjusted to austerity and rationing. In 2020 and 2021 the real story was the financial stimulus provided by governments to stabilise the FIRE sector which masqueraded as COVID relief. The injection of public funds into big Pharma was a bonus.
But the pandemic has worn off in both senses: both as a pandemic (omicron is, what, a cold/flu?) and as a way of managing western populations. And here we find ourselves at almost the precise moment the COVID pandemic exhausts its media potential. In Australia the timing seemed perfect: the Russo-Ukraine War nicely slots into banner headlines once occupied by COVID hysteria.
Under the circumstances it may very well be that the crisis is unfolding elsewhere while we are distracted by the horror show of old-fashioned hot war. Where exactly? There is an attempt going on to rebalance an over-financialized economy. This cannot happen in real time because the economic crisis would be catastrophic. It has to happen to allow the stakeholders to get off the train before it crashes. Enter the media.
It is no accident that all forms of meaningful sociality, such as demonstrations, dissent, protest, strikes, openly discussing controversial topics, etc has been shut down by a media-driven ideological puritanism. The censorship comes from all fronts: one cannot discuss vaccines, covid, woke liberalism, the real causes of conflict in Ukraine, the hypocrisy of a woman berating Bojo for not helping Ukraine but never protesting the millions killed in Irag, Syria, Afghanistan, etc, whose deaths don’t count because they were not white Europeans. The point? Never let them see behind the curtain or under the hood. The looting is widespread…
In the end the source of this is old and very archaic: vested interests defending themselves and/or expanding themselves; market-share; justifications for taking other people’s stuff; stand-over tactics, protection rackets, carpet-bagging middle men.
plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

Here’s an estimate on Nazi wipeouts.
From Donbass Insider.
– Here is the state of the estimated military losses of the Kiev side:
+ 7,300 killed or seriously injured,
+ 80 non-functional DCA systems,
+ 125 disabled main battle tanks,
+ 350 disabled armored vehicles,
+ 60 artillery systems of the “multiple rocket launcher” type out of order,
+ 6 ships out of commission,
+ 40 aircraft out of service (shot down or destroyed on the ground).

I live in the USA and my wife of 20 years is Russian from SPB. My older sister is now questioning my relationship with my wife and the “evil nature” of Russians. Our 15 year old son was just voted off of his school Minecraft team by the other kids for no obvious stated reason; I now suspect it was because he’s half Russian which he told me that the other kids knew. I don’t know, perhaps I’m just being paranoid.
In any case, IMO the current Tsunami of propaganda and psyops even exceeds even what I experienced in the run up to the Iraq War. If it was just my wife and I, we would seriously consider moving out of the country, perhaps to Costa Rica.

The Atlanticists have abandoned the new Russia and its people from December 1994 on forward. After 9/11 attacks on America, Russia was needed as an ally for a short period … logistics of transport into and out of Afghanistan. The Colour Revolution of 2004 changed the momentary friendship. President Medvedev made some bad decisions, especially the attack on Libya with the UN’s R2P policy as false pretext. Many Russian peacekeepers in South Ossetia lost their lives in an unprovoked attack by Saakashvili of Georgia in August 2008. The latter was also a failure as governor of Odessa … got into a verbal fight with Poroshenko over corruption.
The most rational and level-headed person of the lot is Vladimir Putin. He is faced with an existential threat from the US and NATO. The survival of Russia in the next 50 years with more upheaval and global climate crisis.

OK, I hate to give ‘air’ to these kinds of one-off stories that are currently so pervasive in the Western media, but this is how the anti-Russia propaganda campaign is being waged, so I think it’s worth digging into a little bit.
https://forward.com/fast-forward/483233/russia-bombs-babi-yar-five-killed/
1) I had never heard of this Babi Yar site, which I understand honors victims of Nazis
2) It is being claimed that Russia bombed this site on purpose
3) The Russians/Soviets bore the greatest loss of life in WWII and were decidedly anti-Hitler/Nazism
4) So what to make of claims like this coming from Ukraine?

David Harris, CEO of the American Jewish Committee, tweeted: Just heard that Russian missile struck near #BabynYar memorial site in Kyiv. Nazi Germans murdered ~100k there, primarily Jews. Soviets denied victims a proper memorial. In Oct., 🇺🇦 Pres. #Zelensky helped unveil a powerful memorial. Now Russian fascists endanger the site.”

5) Is it possible that Ukrainian forces are responsible or that it was an errant munition which caused this damage and loss of life?
Any clarification would be greatly appreciated as I am admittedly ignorant on the specifics of this site and the events as they are alleged to have occurred both now and when the Soviets allegedly refused proper burial to the Jews murdered there by the Nazis (a statement provided without any backing citations).

However, today, I was reminded of it, when a US general talking head pointed on the map of Ukraine to the kilometres-long Russian Convoy headed to Kiev. The general stated that if the US were involved militarily, that Convoy would already have been obliterated.

To be able to do this, they would need to have air control. Would they have air control? LOL.

I think the “pandemic” just turned the general level of hysteria up to 11. They can now flip a switch and direct the hysteria at whatever they like. Today it is Russians, tomorrow Chinese, and “climate” next week. Since the level of irrationality has gone into orbit, you don’t need any reason other than emotional repetition of propaganda.

– Russia sent warning few hours in advanced to Ukraine authorities etc, but Ukie gov decided not to sound alarm or inform population near tower
– some people that follow Russian sources found out about and notified friends there
– some were not so fortunate so they got killed
That is what I read.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko held his own memorial in honor of the 75th anniversary, and hosted Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in an official state visit who traveled to Ukraine to attend some of the events.
The memorials, however, were not without controversy. In his address to the Ukrainian parliament on Tuesday, Rivlin did not shy away from telling lawmakers in Kiev that “many of the crimes were committed by Ukrainians” during the Holocaust.
“The fighters of UPA were especially prominent,” Rivlin said of members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army who initially collaborated with Hitler because they felt the Nazis could help them break free from the Soviet Union.
“They victimized the Jews, killed them, and in many cases reported them to the Nazis,” he said at a special parliamentary session dedicated to the anniversary of the Babi Yar killings.

@ Tom_Q_Collins | Mar 1 2022 21:41 utc | 218:
As any student of Russian literature or music knows, the poet Yevtushenko criticized the Soviet state in 1961 for the lack of a Babi Yar monument (in a poem beginning “Nad Babym Yarom pamyatnikov nyet” — set to music in Shostakovich’s 13th Symphony). The Soviet state’s reaction was to force a revision to the poem to the effect that Jews weren’t the only ones massacred there. A memorial was erected in 1976 — admittedly belatedly! — but it’s clear that the AJC is being a bit disingenuous — surprise surprise.

I’d throw in a little modification there: It’s also a statement on the complete infiltration of the public education system by the capitalist oligarchy and MIC. It’s often the history that isn’t taught which accounts for the most ignorance emanating from the public school system, but I doubt the private/charter system is any better and perhaps even worse given the interests represented by many/most. I sometimes wonder what would’ve happened if I had refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance they used to *make* us participate in when I was in grade school in the 80s at the height of the Cold War.

Don’t feel bad. Don’t take it personally. I did not mean to fault boomers in particular.
Let me confess a formative experience. At one time I tried to organize democracy and self-organizatiin in a huge squat. A sizable contingent of the squatters (kids born 1980-1990) resisted against my attempts. Their stated objection: “We are anarchists and X (deranged psychopath) is our leader!” The rest of the squatters did not want to let political concerns get in the way of their hedonistic opportunities. Self-anointed squatter bigwigs on the sidelines were not much of a help either as they were too concerned not to get scratches on their self-cherished glory of 1980’s squat nistory. What a bunch of fakes all around. No wonder we have arrived at the point that we have.

Dear barflies,
Like many of you I have been following current developments in Ukraine with keen interest.
Russia has thrown the dice. There is no turning back. They are going for broke because they know that if they lose Russia as we know it will cease to exist.
For Russia this is not some regional conflict. This is not about Donbass or some half hearted pushback against NATO expansion. This is an existential conflict and for sure Russia will do all in its power to come out on top. As they chose the time and place of engaging the West (which is what they do) we can assume that they have thought it out thoroughly and that they have a clear view on what they want to achieve and how they intend to achieve it. Undoubtedly, they have prepared accordingly.
The last 20 years Putin c.s. have proven to be masters of the geopolitical game, turning Russia from a broke ruin of an Empire into a new global power house against the odds. They have proven to be exceedingly smart, cunning, and capable. We can safely assume that they will throw everything they have at the current conflict and we can expect them to operate with intelligence and cunning.
However, this is not what I see when I look at the information sources at my disposal. The more I look at the conflict the more things do not add up. A few points to illustrate what I mean;
– Why is the internet still up in (most parts of) Ukraine?
– Why are the mobile phone networks in Ukraine still functioning?
– Combining the two points above; why do the Russians allow control of the narrative to Ukraine and the West?
– How come that progress of many Russian units is so slow? (Presumably because of lack if fuel and ammunition, bad planning and logistics, superior weaponry donated by the West to Ukraine, strong resistance of Ukrainian militia, removed road signs, etc.)
– How come the Russian army seems to be a bit “clumsy” in their operating? For example having front-to-back packed convoys of dozens of kilometers in enemy territory is beyond dumb.
– How come that we have by now 24/7 “news” coverage of the conflict blasted through the aether by countless anti-Russian news outlets and social media pundits but hardly any information on operational developments, not even from “pro Russian” sources.
– How come Russia almost stoically accepts an increasing barrage of legal, economic and financial sanctions (e.g. expulsion from SWIFT), and pledges of military aid and more to Ukraine from a growing number of (European) countries?
From the little operational information that I found it shows that Russia has only deployed about a 25-30% of the units that they had concentrated at the Ukrainian border before the start of the conflict. It’s airforce seems strangely passive. All elite armoured units are still held back in reserve. Heavy artillery (one of the backbones of the Russian army) has hardly been used. In short Russia has not yet used its iron fist. Why? Obviously because they want to limit civilian casualties and damage to a minimum. Probably because they are not really in a hurry to reach their operational goals. Likely because they want to have a credible deterrent to demotivate any would be interventionists and to put pressure on neighbouring countries.
Thinking about all of the above it occurred to me that Russia might not be operating as clumsily as it seems. What if Putin c.s. are still the smart foxes they have shown themselves to be for so many years? What if they intentially let anti Russian sentiments grow wild in the West (and possibly even lend a helping hand in this perspective) by letting tons of negative news being broadcast from Ukraine? What if they intentionally give the impression of a less than optimal military performance in Ukraine? What if they intentionally react mutely, and thus weak, to the barrage of sanctions imposed by the West?
Living in Western Europe I am amazed how quickly anti Russian (especially anti Putin) sentiment is reaching fever pitch levels; ever more and tougher sanctions on Russia, all of a sudden everyone wants to dramatically increase defence budgets (as if the West in not already spending 10 times more on “defence” than Russia), everyone wants to choke and kill Russia and Putin c.s. in particular. The politicians seem to be feeding on their own propaganda (drinking their own Cool Aid as Americans say) and swallowing it hook, line and sinker.
But what if the Russians intend to lure these politicians in and commit themselves to the strictest and toughest anti-Russian policies. What if the Russians intend the Western politicians to choose sides and to become de facto hostile to Russia for the whole world to see?
If this would turn into reality Russia would be fully in its right to:
– suspend delivery of all goods to hostile nations
– require payment for goods through their own or Chinese payment system in Rubles or Yuan, or in bullion, or else not deliver anything
– militarily support any faction and country hostile to Western interests
– also become personal and wash many a Western poilitician’s dirty linen in public. I am sure Russian intelligence has more than enough dirt on a good number of Western leaders. Joe Biden comes to mind…
There is nothing the European countries, NATO, or the US could do about it. They will have already exhausted all possibilities of sanctioning Russia and they lack the military means to subjugate Russia.
It would result in the swift economic collapse of Europe. Without just energy from Russia it is game over for Europe. And if carried out in synch with other mayor players like China and Iran, with whom they have surely discussed these issues in detail, it could very well result in the collapse of the US Dollar as the world reserve currency. This would mean the end of the US as a global super power.
Also, if food exports from Ukraine and Russia, the bread baskets of and from Europe, do not reach the Middle East or North Africa it will result in massive social instability (think of Egypt, which is heavily dependent on food imports and is already struggling to feed its population). With a little help from Russia and allies this could easily lead to whole new string of “color revolutions”.
The Western world, up to the neck in debt, as opposed to Russia and China, will not be able to gain access to sufficient alternative (energy) sources in time, let alone be able to pay for them. Soaring inflation, industries grinding to a halt, massive poverty, cold nights, and even hunger may very well be what is in store for Europe. Nothing devides more than hunger and it could easily spell the end of the European Union and probably NATO.
Devided and impoverished, without financial carrots and a big military stick the Western world may very well find itself relegated to the fringes of world affairs. The center of the world would, once again, shift towards Asia.
Could it be that this is the strategic goal of Russia?
Could it be that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a trap?

In Passing 191,
indeed. Whether to embargo or not to embargo partly depends on the existing trade relationship.
Scott and I were talking through the dynamics of a full embargo, and agreed to disagree lol.
My money is on no full embargo from the West. That would be overkill in this War Theater. That would probably reduce global GDP by, say, 75% or more, and don’t think the global elites want to go quite that big because that would probably result in outright chaos due to a hard stop in the petrodollar system, which they can’t afford.

@Boogity 210
You might explain to your son that the US is a ‘national security’ state where the military-industrial complex takes top priority (see President Eisenhower’s farewell speech). That means that the US must have one or more enemies, to be selected. Now China, Iran and North Korea make fine enemies, and they are, but Russia serves a better purpose because a war against Russia would require a large army with lots of expensive people (half a million), bases and equipment. So Russia is the ideal US enemy, which is why the US has pushed NATO up to near its border and wants to go further. The US wouldn’t accept anything like that, and neither does Russia. So now we have death and destruction, which has nothing to do with anything wrong with Russian people.

the OUN – Ukraine nationalists. They killed about 30,000 Jews and others – minorities, communists ect at BabynYar. The Ukraine nazi’s of today are the successors and in many if not most cases, the direct descendants of the Ukraine nazi’s of WWII. The comedian craps on about the Ukraine nazi’s that killed those people being the ones who drove German nazi’s out of Ukraine.
As for memorials and stuff at the present time… that term fog of no doubt still there but a propaganda blanket has been thrown over the lot.
Its worth remembering Israeli presidents attend Russia’s great patriotic war events. They know who defeated the nazi’s. Russia the successor state to the soviet union, current Ukraine nazi’s, the successors and descendants of those that killed the Ukraine jews and others in WWII.
I ran onto a site by an Israeli the other day. Tracking the nazi’s of Ukraine, particular thechanges of street and place names to the names of WWII Ukrainian nazi’s.
The comedian is obviously fully aboard the nazi wagon. If something was put up at babyn yar under his or the post coup Ukraine, Israel itself may well want it destroyed.

I saw a ***graphic*** video on one of the Telegram channels of what happens when you give civilians rifles and encourage them to attack trained and equipped mechanised troops. In Kharkov.
Their military career must have lasted about 30 seconds at most. They were shredded, along with the trees they were hiding behind. I’m guessing 30mm cannon fire from IFVs by the looks of things. Lots of unused molotovs.
Also the Chilean guy in Kiev took a walk to the supermarket (allowed) and said there was constant fire and looting at night from all the military weapons that were given out and immediately grabbed by criminals. (The Russian military is outside the city, not inside).
It is absolutely criminal behaviour by the Ukraine government. Any Western fools who turn up as Foreign Legion need to see that video first. Or they’ll end up the same way.
My only hope is that the Ukraine govt sees sense and capitulates so the Russian army and military police can disarm all the maniacs in Kiev.

https://twitter.com/randymco/status/1498779125443555328
Note how Twitter automatically hides the points countering the Western narrative, however. One must actively scroll and click to get the replies which are hidden with a message like “this message may contain content unsuitable for some users” and such.
I’ve seen this playing out on Aaron Mate’s tweets recently too. He’ll say something then an Atlanticist “rebuttal” will show up immediately underneath, but all rebuttals refuting the “rebuttal” are hidden and users are ‘discouraged’ from clicking through to them.

General James Mattis was a retired Marine Corps general who became Trump’s Secretary of Defense.

Your instincts are correct in sensing that the way the War Theater is playing out feels artificial. That’s why it’s called theater.
But you’re barking up the wrong tree with your hypothesis. Just as with the primary function of the plandemic, the primary function of this War Theater is to destroy global demand for oil so that the Management can stay ahead of the geological realities of global oil extraction decline.
This War Theater is just round two of the elites’ non-public Degrowth policy.
The million dollar question is:
how many rounds can civilization go before the KO?

IMO:
– Why is the internet still up in (most parts of) Ukraine?
Because Russia want informed Ukranian people, not to panic, and witness what their government & “allies” are doing for them (nothing good, just use them to increase body count). Also, they want Ukranian people to witness what western MSM is telling and see for their own eyes what is going on around them.
– Why are the mobile phone networks in Ukraine still functioning?
Same reason as above.
– Combining the two points above; why do the Russians allow control of the narrative to Ukraine and the West?
Because they can’t control it. What western countries media brainwash their people with is out of hands of any third party. It is futile for eg. RT to try to change that as all non MSM media is effectively banned. Welcome to the democracy. Russia wants Ukraine people to witness that too, hence internet and mobile phones work.
– How come that progress of many Russian units is so slow? (Presumably because of lack if fuel and ammunition, bad planning and logistics, superior weaponry donated by the West to Ukraine, strong resistance of Ukrainian militia, removed road signs, etc.)
Rubbish. There is no lack of anything. Russian logistical lines are ridiculously short, they are neighboring country ffs. They are moving slowly because their imperative is to minimize civilian casualties. It there are Ukies dug in near civilians, Russian troops back off as first step, then try with alternatives.
– How come the Russian army seems to be a bit “clumsy” in their operating? For example having front-to-back packed convoys of dozens of kilometers in enemy territory is beyond dumb.
Dumb or not, they are on the ground and know risks. It may indicate they believe they have complete air superiority (they do) and there is no Ukie arty in range (this is more likely). Which ever it is, they are on the ground and we are not.
– How come that we have by now 24/7 “news” coverage of the conflict blasted through the aether by countless anti-Russian news outlets and social media pundits but hardly any information on operational developments, not even from “pro Russian” sources.
It is called OPSEC (operational security) and Russia does it excellently. You don’t want media or grunts recording what is going on and sending to relatives or putting it on internet so enemy can see and target them or know where they are. Ukies should try it. US too. In this age, having army this disciplined in OPSEC is indicator of winning side.
Again: Russia don’t give a damn to win “media” war, but real world, physical war.
– How come Russia almost stoically accepts an increasing barrage of legal, economic and financial sanctions (e.g. expulsion from SWIFT), and pledges of military aid and more to Ukraine from a growing number of (European) countries?
They stopped doing that. They are doing tit for tat responses, and for those action they haven’t done it yet, they are preparing asymmetrical ones. They don’t even tolerate negative statements any more (Medvedev just threatened france’s minister that his loose tongue will get him shooting war with Russia). This was unthinkable only a weeks ago.

This is only true if the boycotter is in control of the exports. That is certainly not true with energy exports in the recent global economy. Biden frantically shrugged off sanctions in the energy sector. He is right. Even if Europe cuts all NG imports from Russia, and collapses its own economy, the gas can still be sold in Asia. And Biden will lose any election the next 3 years. For Europe, it is worse, but well deserved.
And oil and gas are not all. There are a lot of commodities and raw and half products where Russia is indispensible. The recent boycott frenzy may badly backfire. In addition, it contributes to a split in global economy, where it is the West who isolates itself and will in effect be isolated by much of the rest. Do you really believe China forgot US and EU sanctions?

Not only that but all the countries and politicians who have now exposed their biases have created a pool of quotations which Lavrov can deploy when explaining why its unfortunate that we can’t can’t supply you with the gas you need to run your economy.
Putin had to make this Ukraine project one which would knock out all of Russia’s enemies in one go. They may have taken his black belt off him but his judo skills remain.

The same happened to German-Americans in the run up to the USA’s entrance into WW1 thanks to British propaganda that was aped by US media, and German-Americans were the largest immigrant community in the nation with their own media, schools, and entire towns that used German as the primary language. All that was destroyed and ceased to exist by 1919. Today, that would qualify as Cultural Genocide.
Yes, it’s a hard time in your kid’s upbringing to uproot and move overseas, but you need to consider the damage that might be done as the current 1984ish Anti-Russian Rage isn’t going to go away soon but will likely endure for a long time as all the decline the Outlaw US Empire will now experience will be blamed on Russia and China. Given your wife is Russian and Russia has lots of opportunities, I’d suggest relocating to Russia’s East and take advantage of the very generous Homesteading offer while keeping in mind that Russian universities are superior to those here as are a great number of other sociocultural aspects. If you knew anything about how the global economy works, you’d know oil and natural gas as as central to its function as air is to you. You can’t destroy global demand for oil. re changes in Russia that should have occurred earlier. Russia doesn’t force anything onto its population, rather it waits till the population want or are ready for change. The MH17 sanctions were a classic. To block imports to create self sufficiency would have been politically unacceptable. The population would have been very pissed off. Sanctions and counter sanctions gave the window for bring in self sufficiency, mild hard ship caused to some for a short period gets blamed on the foreign countries introducing sanctions rather than Russian leadership.

Can you say the same about those “new here” (wink wink nudge nudge say no more say no more)? Trolls will be trolls.

Has there been any outcome of the UNGA debate? Media sources are weirdly silent on it with the last stories being about a day old and speaking in an anticipatory voice.

b, you just days ago turned out to be ludicrously wrong about there not being a Russian invasion (something which you have still not acknowledged). Not only was there one, but it’s largely followed the blueprint the media presented. Are you sure you want to again proclaim a map obviously wrong? Because if turns out not to be fake, you’re going to look like even more of an idiot than you already do.

Aquadraht 278,
I agree with you and the general consensus here, that China and Russia will focus more on their bilateral relationship. That is the nature of deglobalization – it turns into re-regionalization, because during energy-decline, it’s more efficient. Simpler supply chains, shorter distances. Better EROEI.

Russia has thrown the dice. There is no turning back. They are going for broke because they know that if they lose Russia as we know it will cease to exist.

quote:
President Vladimir Putin, who recently startled the world by unveiling Russia’s advanced nuclear arsenal, has again spoken of nuclear arms, clarifying the circumstances in which Moscow is prepared to enter a nuclear war.
“Certainly, it would be a global disaster for humanity; a disaster for the entire world,” Putin said, in an interview for a Russian documentary “The World Order 2018,” adding that “as a citizen of Russia and the head of the Russian state I must ask myself: Why would we want a world without Russia?”
