Disarming Ukraine – Day 3

Yesterday the Russian military halted its advance to give time to the Ukrainian president Zelensky to agree to ceasefire talks. The U.S. however told him not to hold such talks and said he should leave Kiev. Up to this morning Russia had received no response to its ceasefire offer and resumed the attack. Zelensky decided to stay in Kiev.

There was little operational news from the ground that could be verified. Despite that lots of claims were made about the progress or non-progress of the Russian campaign. I believe that these claims are nearly all propaganda and will refrain from reproducing them.

The units from Crimea are moving towards north and east. The eastern group, together with a move from Donbas west, is supposed to surround the Ukrainian units in and around Mariupol. Some Ukrainian units near to Donbas seem to fear getting encircled and are moving out.

There was a Russian attempt to capture another airport by an air assault. It may have failed. I have seen no hard evidence to confirm that in either way.

Russia has moved in more heavy rocket and mortar artillery. The so far rather light touch of the traditionally very strong Russian artillery may well get stronger.

Several European countries are sending weapons to the Ukraine. This is mostly 'small stuff' like machine guns and anti-tank missiles. Throughout the day there were lots of international diplomatic reactions and promises. AP had a live update that catches these.

The idea of kicking Russia out of Swift seems to be still on that table. It would be the beginning of the end of U.S. dollar supremacy.

interesting speculation about maybe the plan of Russian army now
https://aftershock.news/?q=node/1069983 (in Russian)

The proposition is entirely logical and probable. It is surely one way of separating the bulk of the Right Sector forces and get them rushing back along the highway to ‘save’ their beloved Kiev only to find themselves the target of one relentless turkey shoot.
Can’t wait to see that unfold.
After the slaughter, the forces remaining might find their way clear to eliminate the commanding officers (invariably Right Sector thugs) and switch sides.

@ Arne Hartmann 388
That’s a key question I think. Ukraine is a geographically large entity with a ‘gradients’ of cultural / demographic inhomogeneity, running largely east – West.
Were there sufficient good will on both sides (sadly there doesn’t appear to be) I think practical solutions could be found and implemented. It seems to me that the Ukraine crisis is symptomatic of the growing, global instability of the political relationships between individual nation states of the traditional or conventional kind.
I wonder if different kind of political relationship and association between geographically proximate but culturally distinct regions is not needed.
Historically, such associations have involved confederations, that are complete or transitive, with every member of a federation being linked to every other’ within some clearly defined external geographic border.
By contrast, associative relationships between human individuals have some ‘serial’ or ‘non-transitive’ character, resulting in the absence of clear lines of demarcation and separation, as recognised in the ‘six degrees of separation ‘ meme.
The main obstacle to greater adoption and further development of such looser forms of association at the geo-political level would seem to me to be reluctance to abandon familiar, well- defined geographic borders as boundary marking features of political and cultural identity.

some units would keep sitting in place until surrounded, inventing pretexts why they tried to execute orders, but just totally absolutely could not move to Kiev

Granddad Bernhard Leopold Friedrich Eberhard Julius Kurt Karl Gottfried Peter Prinz zur Lippe-Biesterfeld had ties to German Nazi party, married Dutch Royal Princess Juliana of the House of Orange. Exile during WWII to London and Canada respectively. Many business ties made him easy prey for bribes. Esteemed member of the Bilderberg group and as big game hunter many years President WNF.
Received bribes from Lockheed to push procurement of the Starfighter to the Royal Air Force cost lives of many pilots. Nearly caused abdication of Queen Juliana … PM den Uyl barely managed to save the monarchy … would have been no loss.
Crown prince Willem Alexander married Argentinian Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti, father was member cabinet served in regime of General Jorge Rafael Videla.
Prince Friso of Orange-Nassau tied the knot with Mabel Wisse Smit in a low-key civil marriage. Mabel had a flirt met Dutch mobster Bruinsma in Amsterdam. She had talent and soon moved up the ladder to be employed in Soros’ Open Society. She went in deep during the Bosnian wars and flirted with a local politician.
In 1994 she set up the European Action Council for Peace in the Balkans, whose members included Margaret Thatcher, Valérie Giscard d’Estaing and Simon Wiesenthal.
Through this she met the high-profile Bosnian ambassador to the UN, Bosnian-American lawyer Muhamed Sacirbey, with whom she became romantically involved, starting in 1993.
Sacirbey was later accused of financial irregularities and after long procedure for extradition, an US appeals court ruled his exemplary service in the UN Mission made extradition mute.
A number of years later Mabel Wisse Smit was stranded in Libya and a commando style extraction by helicopter was planned. Mission failed as helicopter was left stranded on the beach in Libya. She was on a mission to meet/negotiate deal with Saif Gaddafi when hostilities broke out.
Libya raid and her presence was kept secret for many years.

TQC @ 357
Code Pink simply reeks of controlled opposition. I could not pull one of their stunts without spending a long time behind bars. They always get a pass. They get media coverage. Real opposition is never covered in media. They are a divide and conquer scheme. The organization is for Women. Never heard of any male auxiliaries. Or male allies. The whole shtick is “stick your neck out, we do”. Non-connected persons who stick their neck out like that get their heads chopped off.
The last public demos I attended – way back in the lead up to and early days of the Iraq War – were blatantly organized and led by police. I hung out at tail end of the march, as always, pushing veterans wheelchairs and chatting with veteran Red Squad last encountered in 70s. Easy to recognize them. They were laughing about how the anti-war crowd never learns a thing.
Should any trust the TQC persona? I think not.

@312 Grieved If the Russian banks that are except from sanctions are those that are balls-deep in the energy market with the West then the next move by the Russians pretty much writes itself.
It is this: get those Russian banks that AREN’T sanctioned to openly and conspicuously do business with those Russian banks that ARE sanctioned, and then double-dog-dare “the West” to do anything about it.
The West either imposes secondary sanctions on them, thus shooting themselves in the foot.
Or they do nothing about it, thus revealing themselves to be “all hat and no cattle”.
Either way, not good for the dollar. Not good at all.

Expulsion from Swift rather a tiger paper thing
Ever since Iran’s SWIFT cut-off in 2012 US and EU policymakers have wielded the threat of a SWIFT cut-off like a sword. Now it seems throwing Russia’s 1.7% of global GDP off of SWIFT is unpalatable.
Let’s look at why. The biggest reason is energy but the others are tech-based:
1️⃣ G7 officials made it clear that they were reluctant to expel Russia for various reasons, that’s changed now, but let’s wait & see, if’THEY’ talk the talk and HOW the walking will be done!?
2️⃣ SWIFT expulsion is not guaranteed to stop cash flows. SWIFT is merely a messaging system, it doesn’t move money. Anyone following China-Iran trade can attest that a cut-off doesn’t stop trade, so much as make it more expensive. Iran has perfected barter and international digital goods trading off of SWIFT.
3️⃣ China’s “Cross-Border International Payment System (CIPS) started in 2015 as a SWIFT alternative. It now has 1,186 financial institutions in 100 countries signed up. Russia has access to CIPS and while not ideal there is nothing preventing Russia from using the system and RMB in lieu of dollars. China built CIPS, following Iran’s cut-off for exactly this purpose. Russia’s equivalent SPFS system is simply too small.
4️⃣ Crypto is not yet ready to take over a meaningful amount of Russia’s $670+ bn in combined imports and exports but it doesn’t have to. If CIPS and other options above are put to use crypto can likely help small businesses move money across borders to keep things running.
Stablecoin tether was already illegally used in trade between China and Russia in 2019 with flows of up to $10-30mn a day. This is new territory, but I think we should not underestimate crypto’s capabilities. They may surprise us.
5️⃣ The digital Ruble, is in testing and perhaps within a few months, it could be rushed into production. Digital yuan-ruble trade is already in discussion. Russia may convince other countries to accept a digital ruble in trade. The recipients won’t need a CBDC themselves, just a digital ledger at the central bank to avoid to avoid SWIFT.

I don’t get the idea from what I understand, so far, that Putin’s main objective is “deNazification” of Ukraine. It’s to remove American influence which is, I would think, a somewhat separate issue. There are many problems associated with that, I’m sure, such as how to achieve that without permanently occupying Ukraine, but I do think they’re somewhat different in what they require.

Posted that Ukraine has allegedly filed an application against Russia before the International Court of Justice (ICJ)in The Hague for “manipulating the notion of genocide to justify aggression”.
I find that interesting, and would welcome litigation before the ICJ on legal issues related to Russia’s action in Ukraine – the recognition of the statelets, and the military operation.
– Manipulating the notion of genocide is not a basis for litigation, but violation of the Genocide Convention is. Russia is not committing genocide, it claims that the Ukraine forces are committing genocide against the ethnic Russian citizens of Ukraine. Under the Genocide Convention all states have an obligation to prevent the commission of genocide, including Ukraine. The legal definition of the crime of genocide is the commission of five types of prohibited acts, like killing members of the group, “with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical or racial group as such”. The acts, when proved to have been committed, must be proved to have been committed with the specific intent stipulated in the Convention, in order for there to be genocide. The acts must be directed at the group as such, which means they were committed not in order to kill individual members of the group, but the group itself by killing its members.
It’s a tough crime to prove because of the specific intent.
– Ukraine would need to take Russia to court for violation of a specific international treaty, not the ‘manipulation’ of a legal notion like genocide. If there is a non-aggression treaty, or a friendship treaty or such between Ukraine and Russia, Ukraine could claim violation of such a treaty to start litigation, if the Court finds it has jurisdiction. Both Ukraine and Russia are parties to the Court.
– It would be very interesting to hear arguments from both sides before the court.
– – As for Muhamed Sacirbey, former foreign minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war, who was mentioned in one of these posts, I feel obligated for reasons of truth to advise all that he was persecuted for years in the US (whose citizen he is) at the behest of and in the interest of Richard Hoolbroke, because he, Sacirbey, told the world a lot of the facts/truth about the role the US and its partners, in particular the UK, played in enabling the genocide in Srebrenica, which,, genocide, has been legally estabished beyond any doubt.
I am familiar with the evidence, including US documents, which indicate clearly the complicity of the US and Britain, in allowing the attack of Ratko Mladic’s forces on the UN protected areas of Srebrenica and Zepa, in full knowledge of the probability that egregious crimes would be committed, including genocide. The genocide then happened, and the US and Britain, in particular, have done all they can ever since to cover up and bury their complicity in this horrendous crime whose details I am fully familiar with, and everyone can find in the judgements of the Yugoslavia war crimes Tribunal. The most senior Bosnian Serb political and military leleaders, Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, have been sentenced to life for the Srebrenica genocide and other crimes and against humanity and war crimes. The evidence against them is rock solide. Justice has been served.
Russia was always against the Yugoslavia Tribunal and took an unprincipled stand in the Yugoslav war simply sticking with the Serb side regardless of what that side was doing.Tha shows that Russia is not principled and really dedicated to the law, but to its political and geopolitical interests. So let’s not idealise anyone and instead request that everyone, regardless of size, abide by the law, morality and universal principles accepted by the human race.

I believe the immediate proximate cause was/is the imminent completion of NSII. I don’t believe it can be overemphasized just how important the European LNG market is to the powers-that-be in the US. In March ’21 Ukraine govmt. passes resolutions stating intent to reclaim Donbas by military force; EuroShield (NATO) drills all around Ukraine incl amphibious landing drills near Odessa; and always pumping more and more US arms and equipment into Poland and other NATO aligned former Soviet Republics. The shit that happened in Belarus, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan. As several Russian spokespersons have said recently it would have been stupid to ignore all that, not be prepared and ready to respond. Nothing is certain and nothing is fixed and as the lively discussions here point out, though our eyes are focused on Ukraine as the battlefield, the whole system of global relations is now in play.
I come here because US media is absolutely fucking worthless. I want to know whether to drink those special beers I’ve been saving before I get vaporized.

I do not see how crypto-currency can “replace” CIPS/SPFS/SWIFT
Let’s decompose crypto-currency notion. Crypto-Currency (BitCoin and likes) consist of:
1) zero-trust public ledger. That means a forever public record of every and everyone’s transactions, using cryptography to make past records unforgeable. It is a slick idea but it is not very new. Basically, it is 3-rd generation programming Source Control Management tools (older term – Version Control Software), but reduced to a single branch (bitsaver/git/mercury/bazaar2/fossil and others model a tree, with a single root point but as many branches and leaves (end nodes) as programmer would find use for). That is what is called “blockchain” – an evergroing chain of immutable blocks.
2) “objective” money emission rate, that is – one not under arbitrary control of men, then one that happens in it’s own pace regardless what anyone wants. The goal is the same – zero trust. We do not have to have any “king” whose “decrees” and actions would be ultimate truth to obeyed by everyone.
3) zero-trust consensus mechanism, that is a tool to keep culling all the alternative new branches except one, so that 3G SCM typical DAC (directed acyclic graph) would be reduced into a 1-dimensional chain with no alternative paths/leaves. This in BitCoin terms called PoW (Proof of Work) and mandates that you should destroy some real world asset to have a say in the choice which only of many conflicting next-gen branches would be allowed to live on. That is the reason that BitCoin burns out so many electricity. One needs to be serious about BitCoin enough to destroy real-world asset, or there would be all kind of spammers, trying to fake transactions without any cost to them. That also makes BitCoin rather slow and its early claim to be universal payment system moot (together with #1).
Now, so called “stable coins”. They remove the #2 from the equation. Now there is a single authority, a “king” that decides when to emit new coins and when to destroy old coins. Anyone using that stablecoin is declaring his trust to the king to do it. Basically, stablecoins are only 2/3 of cryptocurrency and 1/3 “good old” fiat currency.
Now, those government-controlled “crypto” – they remove both #2 and #3. The goal of those currencies is being controlled by one single king, be it central bank of Venezuela, central bank of Russiam, central bank of China or any other king. Since the trust to the king is mandated, trust to everything the king says or does – there is no need for expensive and slow PoW. Why should millions around the world destroy material assets (electricity) for days, when they can just ask the king “point your finger and choose one of competing new springs” and get an instant answer?
So when that is framed as crypto-ruble or crypto-yuan it is misnomer. They are only 1/3 cryptocurrency and 2/3 fiat. The more correct terms should be something like “blockchain for rouble payments”.
Terms like “digital rouble” also seem weird, because tools like VIA/Master/Mir bank cards a well as tools like PayPal and AliPay also are digital rouble.
And now we are back to the essence of blockchain – an eternal and public record of ALL the transactions. Why should CIPS/SPFS/SWIFT service need it? If bank A transferred to bank B some amount of cash, why bank C should had any right to immediately see it??? If Venezuela paid to Iran – why USA should instantly be in the know???
Cryptocurrency and central bank are concepts mutually hostile if not mutually exclusive.
Of course they can learn from one another and cherry-pick SOME good ideas from one another, if they somehow fit a very different worldview and framework.
But i do not see how even blockchain alone fits SWIFT-liek service, less so other components of cryptocurrency concept.

this stupid propaganda is boring
whether Kiev Regime is nazi or not and whether current talking head of Kiev Regime is Jew or not are different and totally unrelated questions

Thank you and yes that is correct. I was using shorthand, as the completion (full operation) depended on the certification process. I don’t think the distinction would make a difference to the one I was responding to.
In support of my conclusions note that the very first thing Biden said when Russia recognized Donetsk and Lugansk (and before any Russian forces had entered there or any other part of Ukraine) was to announce that NSII was dead. Just as promised. If I were a trial lawyer that would be the point I would have said: “I rest my case.”
btw: it only took a few moments to find the answer to my own question of the other day wrt German nuclear generating plants. Will be interesting to see how that all plays out now.

on the topic of craig murray.. he is a real disappointment when it comes to all things russian.. i don’t agree with him, but i wanted to share his post regardless.. he is on the right side when it comes to assange and scottish independence and the malfeasance of britian, but on the wrong side on the topic of russia as i see it.. however, he raises valid questions that don’t have an easy answer… thanks for all your feedback on this!

If you think people who identify as “Jew” cannot be Nazis, even after almost 75 years of watching the Zionist state (self-proclaimed “Jewish State”) at work, you must be rather innocent.

james, once a person shows an obvious bias on a subject like Murray did, I am unable to keep reading.
Those questions as you see them..?
