Comment more appropriate for yesterdays post, but I fear that those Who determine policy un the US will requiere a slap in the face before they will awaken from their dream state. Hopefully it will be sufficiently convincing that they Will not up the ante too much. Vladimir has some tough choices, I Hope he chooses well - not too soft and not to hard.

Thank you for your analyses - some of the best available.

Although I think that your blog has one of the best commentariats, I wonder if you could develop an algorithm that would allow just one comment per commenter on each of your posts. The problem with some of the subjects is that we get essentially the same comment in multiple remarks from some individuals which makes wading through the Comments section tedious. Have rarely seen a follow-up comment from some folks that adds anything other than verbiage.

Won't say Happy New Year, as I have strong doubts that such will be the case.

I'd like to wish my fellow barflies a happy new year. Tonight let's drink and toast to ChiRus. I hope the people of Russia and China realize how important their historic alliance is and how it gives hope to all of us out there who want the end of the Evil Neoliberal Empire.

I wish excellent health to our magnanimous host, b., and to all barflies of good will. I wish complete success to ChiRus.
May it soon add another ancient and great civilization and become ChiRuAn.
May it put an end to the depredations of the Evil Neoliberal Empire.
May it complete the process of decolonization which the Soviet Union and China helped start 70 years ago.

For those of us in the West, things are looking dark. And it's gonna get darker still. We wont be on the good side of History. There's not much we can do about it. You cant fight a tsunami of greed and stupidity. But maybe we can take some comfort in knowing that a new fairer world is being built, even if it's without us.

Below, I share Comrade Putin's New Year's Greetings with barflies:

"President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Citizens of Russia, friends,

"The year 2021 is drawing to a close. Very soon, time will take us from the past into the future.

"True, this is something that happens every day, minute and second. But we hear this continuous passage of time most clearly when we welcome the New Year and look forward to it as an important marker in our lives.

"We are united in the hope that changes for the better lie ahead. But we know that they cannot be detached or isolated from the events that unfolded in the outgoing year.

"We faced enormous challenges, but we learned to live in these harsh circumstances and solve complex problems. Our solidarity made this possible. Together, we continued to combat the dangerous pandemic sweeping every continent, which shows no signs of receding. This elusive disease claimed tens of thousands of lives. Everyone who lost loved ones, please accept my words of sincere support.

"Friends,

"Most importantly, we worked together to overcome the difficulties of the outgoing year. We stood up for those in need. First and foremost, we supported senior citizens and families with children who are the future of Russia.

"We acted resolutely and consistently to uphold our national interests and the security of the country and our citizens. We took swift action to restore the economy and in many areas we are close to achieving our strategic development objectives.

"Of course, many issues remain unresolved. But we did well this year. Most of the credit goes to you, the citizens of Russia. This is the result of your hard work, friends.

"Everyone in their own way strove to do their duty, to do even more than seemed possible, and to help those who had it particularly hard. My heartfelt thanks go to all of you.

"In challenging times like these, it is particularly important to be creative and committed to your plans no matter what, while working for the benefit of society and your native country.

"As we ring in the New Year, we hope that it will bring new opportunities for us. Of course, we hope luck will be on our side, but we understand that making our dreams reality primarily depends on us, on what we prioritise in our daily lives, on our ability to commit to our projects and achieve concrete, tangible results.

"These results will be the stepping stones towards the successful implementation of our national plans. Their main goal is to improve the well-being and quality of life of the people. Achieving these goals will make Russia even stronger, and we will be able to ensure the continued progress and prosperity of our Motherland only if we are in it together.

"Friends,

"New Year's Eve is literally filled with good cheer and happy thoughts, as we all try to put our best foot forward. This openness and generosity are the spirit of this wonderful holiday, when it is so important to warm parents’ hearts with kindness and loving care, to hug them if they are near you, and to tell everyone around you how dear they are to you and that happiness is all about love, children, family, and friends.

"These are the important values that largely determine the meaning of each person's life. We all want them to remain a reliable pillar of strength supporting us in the coming year.

"This is the time to share our innermost feelings for the people who are near and dear to us, to speak those sincere words of love and gratitude which we do not always have enough time for in our busy lives.

"But the real magic of the New Year is that it opens our hearts to empathy and trust, generosity and mercy. Wherever you may be during these minutes – with your family and friends, or in the squares of your beloved cities – you will hear these warm and sincere wishes.

"I am pleased to join in these wishes, and to wish a Happy New Year to those who serve in the military or another capacity, who take care of the ill, who are on active duty at their combat post or enforcing law and order. The operation of major transport routes and a large number of plants and critical services goes on interrupted.

"Hundreds of thousands of our citizens are employed in these efforts. Thank you for your responsible work which is so important for the country and society.

"Friends,

"The New Year is about to begin in a few seconds. Many families, including our compatriots outside Russia, will offer the traditional New Year toast: 'Happy New Year! May it be filled with new fortune!' These simple words have a special meaning to us, because they are passed down from generation to generation.

"My sincere best wishes, and above all for good health! From that, success in your work, studies, creative endeavours and favourite pursuits will follow.

"May every home have as many joyful moments as possible. May there be new families with new children. May they grow up to be healthy and intelligent, honest and free.

"May love fill every heart and inspire us all to achieve our goals and scale the greatest heights. For the sake of our loved ones and for the sake of our only country, our great Motherland.

"Happy New Year, friends!

"Happy 2022!"

Western media has been so successful in confusing right and wrong, but at what cost?

On Twitter, 3 days after your post.

And as the fireworks to celebrate the coming new year are exploding, have exploded, or anticipate exploding soon..

...explosively GOOD NEWS comes via Dr. John Campbell as he translates into lay terms the results from a recent, top-tier scientific study from South Africa that essentially shows:

1. T-cell effectiveness against Omicron appears intact across 2 vaccines (J&J + Pfizer) and also previously infected people

2. Thus, the body "recognizes" Omicron from previous encounters with earlier variants, whether artificially or naturally

3. And that it is hard to imagine any future variant that could "out-compete" Omicron by being even more transmissible

These 15-minutes of joyous tidings on YouTube are here (much gratitude to the original poster):

Omicron science, good news

This is the Christmas and New Year's gift that we have hoped and suspected it is.

Let the fireworks explode! Let the bells ring out! We can all become immune! The Pandemic is over!

Happy New Year!

I read somewhere today that

1. COVID19 detected in wastewater in Florida are predominantly Omicron
2. Hospital COVID19 patients in Florida are predominantly Delta
and it is so lopsided that it seems that Omicron is mostly harmless. At least in a warm climate.

That said, if you are inclined to drink wastewater in Florida, boil it first.

Unrelated news. Accuweather is a fount of well intentioned advise. Say that you are visiting Yakutsk and contemplate going out. You check local weather on Accuweather. Two tidbits of advise:
Air quality: 17, excellent. Enjoy all your normal outdoor activities.
Temperature: -55 F, frigid. Outdoor activity is potentially life threatening. (Even if enjoyable?)

Sigh :/ At one stage I had a business plan for Artemisia's Restaurant (outdoor of course) with roving musicians doing Dead can Dance covers etc.

Seriously how are these medico totalitarian control freaks going to wind down their power mongering? Can I delete my phone tracking app or are they busy devising deeper tricks as we chat. THAT will be a tale to tell.

Some interesting writing from laodan to consider with the new year:

Now the fact is that the discourse of Russian leaders leaves no place for a 3rd alternative as a possible outcome of these talks. From what we hear it is — or “we have a deal” and the West accepts a retreat to its posture before the fall of the Soviet Union — or “we have no deal” and China and Russia, on the 4th of February, announce their further game-plan to the world.

Some Russian officials have already announced that one of the measures that they could take if there is no agreement is to refuse payment in dollars for any goods they export… And the fact is that China’s Digital Yuan is ready for use by the Chinese public at large. By October there were already 140 million people who had opened “wallets” and remember that this digital yuan has been designed, over the last 7 years, to act as a new technical payment system for international exchanges that will thus for the first time be free of Swift’s intervention and Washington’s judicial long arm… This Digital Yuan will also be connected to block-chains that will handle the currency exchange between Yuan and local currency, the final payment as well as tax matters, transportation matters,… all this promises to erase the hefty bank commissions and lengthy bureaucratic delays which should catch the attention of the buyers of Chinese goods while reducing the volume of exchanges in US dollars.

Happy New Year to you laodan. Good health and good painting and thinking for the year ahead.

Let me be characteristcally unpopular and blunt. We are closing in on a well-deserved catastrophic credit bubble implosion and financial collapse, irreversible global warming fueling environmental destruction and maybe war initiated by the most nuclearized, technologically armed countries, while the greatest generation and their creative offspring die off, and the world is being left in the hands of the least inspired, most mediocre, coddled, entitled, irresponsible, self-absorbed, most unprepared-for-real-life generations to ever disgrace the planet.

So how does happy emerge from that equation except as a pretend illusion that promotes the inertia of selfish temporary ignorant bliss?

England's queen to give the war criminal Tony Blair a knighthood- who says crime doesn't pay.

A bit of advise: to most of the readers here, crime doesn't pay. I wanted to quote a proverb that explains why, but just now I learned that it is actually wisdom of the Ancients

We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office. Aesop

The unexplained attribution of a proverb to Aesop is puzzling: a legendary/historical figure was famous because of his fables, and not his proverbs. As fables, myths and sagas were oral lore, figures like Homer and Aesop where authorities invoked by story tellers, and the details of their live were as variable as the stories. Wikipedia describes one possible situation when Aesop could be described as uttering the saying about small thieves:

Plutarch[7] tells us that Aesop had come to Delphi on a diplomatic mission from King Croesus of Lydia, that he insulted the Delphians [i.e. priests in charge of the most prestigious Oracle in Greece, possibly "great thieves"], was sentenced to death on a trumped-up charge of temple theft, and was thrown from a cliff (after which the Delphians suffered pestilence and famine).

And all Moonkind appeared..

Blue moon
Now I'm no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own.

Not the most popular version, but Chet Baker in his Cool Cat album inspires... plus a nice Round Midnight too.

Cheers.

A way forward in Ukraine via UNSC 2022....

In another forum I was reminded that the Minsk Agreements were codified in a UNSC resolution… 2022 on 7 Feb 15. This resolution contains the following relevant clauses and adoption statements:

“The 13-paragraph “package of measures”, contained in Annex I of the resolution, called for a number of actions."

"An immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine and its strict implementation as of 15 February 2015"

"Withdrawal of all heavy weapons by both sides by equal distances in order to create a security zone."

"Withdrawal of all foreign armed formations, military equipment and mercenaries from the territory of Ukraine." {This will be interpreted to include NATO forces.}

"Disarmament of all illegal groups." {This will be interpreted to include "Right Sector", and all the UkroNazis.}

"Reform of Ukraine with a new constitution entering into force by the end of 2015." That document had to provide for decentralization, as well as adopting permanent legislation on the special status of certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in line with eight measures until the end of 2015. {This will be justification for supervising creation of a new one.}

Council members had also emphasized that perpetrators must be held accountable for the 2014 downing of the Malaysian airliner that killed 298 people. {I expect Russia to charge Ukrainian FSB & CIA}

Echoing a common view, the representative of France said it was the "Council’s collective responsibility to silence the guns”.

The representative of Germany said the resolution was of utmost importance, conveying a stern message to those who violated the ceasefire.

Agreeing, the representative of Ukraine called on the Security Council’s permanent members to prevent violations. ”

My anticipated course of action by Russia::……………….

I believe, Russia will claim it’s action(s) in Ukraine are for the purpose of enforcing UNSC resolution 2022. That such action was specifically called for by the Ukraine upon the resolution’s adoption, and such action includes removal of all NATO forces in Ukraine because they are “foreign forces” specifically required to be removed from Ukraine.

Russia will supervise elections of a “unity” government and shepherd development and adoption of a new constitution as envisioned in UNSC 2022.

Russia will search and destroy Right Sector and the other extremist groups, as envisioned in UNSC 2022.

Russia has been gathering evidence of “crimes against humanity, and war crimes" perpetrated since the 2014 coup, including the massacre in Odessa, and the sniper killings in Kiev. Russia will conduct a war crimes tribunal, for the purpose of bringing perpetrators of the above, including the MH 17 downing, to justice.

Russia will conduct these operations throughout the entirety of Ukraine, likely with their forces wearing “blue” helmets.

NATO and specifically UK/USA will be powerless to interfere.

I reiterate, the above is my view of how the Russians may frame their incursion.

Piotre Berman @ 91, your post about Aesop with reference to the description in Plutarch took me on a hunt for a Russian version I remember had great significance for Dostoievski - I finally remembered the name 'Kirillov' and found the fable I wanted. Here's a not great verse version of it:

Ivan Krylov [1768-1844]

The Swan, the Pike, and the Crab

WHENE’ER companions don’t agree,
They work without accord;
And naught but trouble doth result,
Although they all work hard.

One day a swan, a pike, a crab,
Resolved a load to haul;
All three were harnessed to the cart,
And pulled together all.
But though they pulled with all their might,
The cart-load on the bank stuck tight.
The swan pulled upward to the skies;
The crab did backward crawl;
The pike made for the water straight —
It proved no use at all!

Now, which of them was most to blame
’Tis not for me to say;
But this I know: the load is there
Unto this very day

— The “Fables.”

@INDY, #95:

Happy New Year to you.

A way forward in Ukraine via UNSC-2022 is only to mitigate Russia's immediate anger against Ukraine (or Zelenski in particular) for noncompliance with Minsk. Russian troops hawking over eastern Ukraine would remain until Zelenski carries out the last three points of your listed terms.

But Putin's demand to NATO goes beyond that. Putin is specifically asking rollback of NATO's advances since 1999. Putin's demands amount to the same stance that JFK took in 1962, saying existentially lethal weaponries and threats in Russia's close proximity is unacceptable and must be mollified. Otherwise, Russia is prepared to take whatever measures necessary to safeguard its own national security, regardless whether NATO would concur. Russia did not specify these measures, but given Russia's spectrum of weaponry in possession, I would look for ways to placate them if I am western Europe, hell with Empire's arm twisting.

Problem is, western Europe's decision rests with a bunch of politicians whose personal dirty laundries may be in Empire's hand. These politicians have no senses of global morality, and are liable to take actions that only save their own butts.

I am waiting to see whether there is maturity in the ruling circles of the Empire yet. I'm sure such maturity ain't present at Foggy Bottom or on Pennsylvania Avenue.
