CIA Wokeness

Michael Tracey writes about a weird CIA video that is making the rounds (emphasis added):

In a mind-blowing marketing video first published on March 25, but which had escaped widespread notice until recent days, the CIA enthusiastically endorsed several key tenets of what has now indisputably become a hegemonic left/liberal ideological and rhetorical construct:

I am a woman of color,” the video’s protagonist, an unnamed CIA officer, triumphantly proclaims. “I am a cisgender millennial who’s been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. I am intersectional, but my existence is not a box-checking exercise.”

She continues, “I used to struggle with imposter syndrome. But at 36, I refuse to internalize misguided patriarchal ideas of what a woman can or should be. I am tired of feeling like I’m supposed to apologize for the space I occupy.”

I have to admit that I do not know what the words in bold are supposed to mean. (Nor does my Firefox spellchecker. It flags them.)

I also do not understand the italicized phrases.

To me they sounds like utter bullshit.

But if the CIA wants to hire more such people I am all for it. Folks who can not leave their personal issues at the door typically muck up their workplace and create productivity problems.

A less effective CIA will be a plus for the rest of the world.

Lorna MacKay @92--

How, in any way is 'cancel culture' leftist? Aren't censorship and persecution the tactics of authoritarianism and fascism? How is that possbly related to or seen as 'liberal'?

Maybe it is time to retire the concept of 'right' and 'left' in terms of political and social ideology.

Excellent observations!! Putin is described by many of his detractors as Conservative or Ultra Conservative while he proposes and implements what I'd term as very Progressive policies for Russia and Russians. I've described him as more of a genuine Liberal than all of his self-proclaimed liberal detractors for he is more tolerant than all of them combined. One of the reasons why I make it my business to report his actual words is to show why those words go unreported by our supposedly Liberal media.

Long ago Gilbert & Sullivan invented the Liberal-Conservative persona in a person who was unfortunately only a fairy down to the waist--the male offspring of the Fairy Queen and a mortal man (Iolanthe)--but such political wit and humor has disappeared in favor of continuous propaganda aimed at perpetuating Divide and Rule. As for going beyond mere Left/Right, attempts at making different matrixes exist aplenty but are still dogged by their two-dimension limitation. And all attempts succumb thanks to the lack of agreement on what defines the ideal political-economic-societal arrangement, although some cultures have arrived at a workable compromise as in the case of the Chinese, which I describe as a collective-libertarianism that's rejected by Neoliberals as there's no place for them to exert control for their own benefit at the expanse of all others. (The British are interesting subjects to examine given the vast amount of political terror used against most of the populace during the majority of their history, much of which is sanitized.)

IMO, the best way to describe Cancel Culture or that espoused by its apparent BLM allies is Machiavellian since they both aim to further divide the polity so ruling is facilitated, just like all the previous episodes of Culture War were formulated to accomplish. Clearly, neither aims at boosting togetherness or genuine inclusiveness. Furthermore, I see it as another instance of abusing the concept of Cultural Relativism for the purposes of political gain and control.

Posted by: uncle tungsten | May 5 2021 21:46 utc | 103

This type of recruitment is not far off in non-public job markets. I have seen too many job descriptions where personality traits (really private life) are given higher priority than actual qualifications. "Hey, we want a person with a good sense of humor for our Customer Happiness Engineer." I have a theory one of the reasons older workers have problems is they think qualifications matter more than if you are a fun woke guy or gal.

Posted by: Zane | May 5 2021 22:05 utc | 106

Unlike our host I do know what each of the bolded terms mean. Or at least I know the denotation. Why the terms are used is harder to guess. Everyone is “intersectional” if we go by meaning of the word. So why bother to claim that? Sometimes all it means is the speaker is identifying themself as a person who would use pop terminology. Often the words are used as cudgels. I have had the term intersectional tossed at me in conversation. If I fail to respond then the speaker assumes I am on their program and doubles down on jargon. If I make a face indicating I can’t fathom why that notion would come up at a given moment the next words I hear will be a vicious attack. No middle ground between bland acquiescence and fangs bared. Best thing to do with any who use these terms is to walk away. Of course you are then an enemy. But you are anyway.

The italicized phrases are also plain enough, again very hard to guess why they are uttered. Sounds like an overly sensitive and prickly loser pre-emptively answering attacks that have no yet occurred. Horrible rhetorical device. But common.

Did anyone watch the video? It is very incorrect to say such things aloud, that woman is homely. She is ill dressed. She speaks badly. Beyond not having anything original to say her voice is rough and angry. She might be able to sell the product to other homely women with no prospects, no one else would want to look at her or listen to her. She says she is a cis woman, doesn’t say if she is heterosexual. I cannot imagine a cis hetero man who would be able to take any interest. Or even to listen if she walked into a room to give a report. Yes, there is still prejudice against homely women with nothing to say. Hard to imagine the world would be different. Of course if she had something to say or was productive she could be useful as office plankton. Regurgitating pop phrases with an angry tone does not give promise of anything better to come.

With respect, I think this is a legitimization device. The idea is the increase the domestic prestige and political clout of the organization and in so doing reduce its political risk. Remember, these Agencies are at risk from entities like the ICC. If the governing party was to decide it was in its interests to be multi-lateralist again some people might be at risk of visiting the Hague.

Agreed that is their prime danger PLUS they have a new boss to subvert and how better to narrow the new boss' options than to embarrass at the commencement and then confine the means by which the boss can respond without finding themselves in an immediate beat up scandal with looney Wretched Madcow leading the attack. What would an LGBTQ-we-they colour revolution look like? Just watch, my guess is that it wont be just wearing a coon skin hat and hairy chest and pussy mittens.

Then there is the income stream to protect, most seems secure but that Afghanistan opium $$$ pipe looks risky and the CIA wont pay the price the Talibs demand. So time to get a short rope on the boss' nuts and indicate the right direction.

IMO this advertisement is bringing the US into alignment with the absurdity of the englanders. Any nation that has a queen and monarchy as rotten/ridiculous to the core as the UK and spends its entire century with its zio-allies colonising the USA is bound to lose perspective in its messaging now and then. These are the masters of subversion, the engineers of precision controlled group think.

William Gruff #97

Posted by: uncle tungsten | May 5 2021 23:42 utc | 109

A few items on group think might be worth contributing.

This example takes climate change science and applies the analysis. I have no advocacy here ~ it is an example of considering propositions from a structured frame of reference.

Conformity experiment by Asch is a simple basis to demonstrate how peer pressure guides rational / social mind.

"Controlled opposition is counterintelligence propaganda and is carried out today, legally, under the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act. It’s all an Act. And the Act is part and parcel of Social Engineering, the systematic molding and brainwashing of the individual mind to conform to group-think and one preferred ideology. Controlled opposition turns a captive audience into a captured herd with an accepted institutionalized message."

Personally I do not have a problem with people thinking differently from myself. Could be about gay rights, racial issues or vaccines. Doesn't matter, people are entitled to their opinion. My problem with the Woke movement is that one is not even allowed to publicly disagree with them. They ally with governments who become the enforcers and make all criticism illegal hate crimes.

The same can be said for the pro-lockdown, pro-mask, pro-vaccine crowd. No criticism is tolerated. Anyone who disagrees is selfish, evil... pick your adjective. Media will not allow open discussion on scientific issues. Big Tech silence any non-conformist. Basically the same behavior we've seen on Woke issues.

There's no need to get into a vaccine debate on this thread. My point has been made. A loud minority, in league with authoritarian governments, is silencing all dissent. Remaking our society in extreme ways.

A lot of leftists embrace this kind of posturing, but the headline 'CIA Embraces Left-Wing Ideology' is misleading. The CIA preserves a capitalist imperialist world order. No leftist can support that, let alone do the dirty work to maintain it.

Posted by: Sigil | May 6 2021 0:19 utc | 113

No wonder the CIA agent in the recruitment video suffers from generalised anxiety disorder: she believes herself part of too many box-ticked categories (and as a result is conscious of her "intersectionality") and yet she doesn't belong to enough, being cisgender.

If she doesn't like her existence to be a "box-checking exercise" then she (and others like her) could just stop categorising herself and everyone else in boxes influenced by identity politics / critical race theory, and start thinking of herself as an individual.

I would have to say though that a less effective CIA would be more dangerous to the world than a more effective CIA. For one thing, ten mediocrities would be needed to do the work of one effective CIA staffer, meaning a more bloated payroll, more money spent on meetings and communicating, more money spent on useless projects or unnecessary weapons - and where would the CIA get the money to pay for all that waste if it cannot get it from the US government? It would get it from clandestine and illegal activities like growing opium in Afghanistan (to be guarded by Western soldiers) and trafficking in heroin and other drugs as it has done over past decades.

Every ideology that expands, prospers and lives long enough tends to sophisticate itself and subdivide again - in the post-French Revolution era, we commonly use the terms "left" and "right" to designate such subdivisions. The German Communist Party (KDP), for example, divided itself into right and left factions by the beginning of the 1920s (both factions being communist, but diverging on the method).

In the case of American Liberalism (American Communism/Socialism was always weak and, either way, was exterminated during the 1950s-1960s), as it occupied the vacuum left by the communists, started to divide itself into Left and Right factions as soon as the 1940s. Both are liberals (i.e. from the Right, by worldwide standards), but they still fashion themselves as being from the "right" or the "left".

We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets of our air force.

I'm not sure how to interpret b's odd little post.

It diverges from the rationality I'm used to.

Apparently his proposal is that hiring people of colour to the CIA will make it less competent.

Aside from the obvious racism, the fact is that nothing can cap the White-Centric stupidity of the CIA over it's near century long history.

The hiring of a 'diverse' crowd is actually bound to make the CIA a more 'effective' organisation than it has been thus far - exactly because of it's diversity.

Think about it:

Infiltration of subcultures will be more effective, now that you have people who are actually able to think outside the Anglo-Saxon frame and understand how a target culture works.

Not to mention you can now use real brown, yellow, trans people to infiltrate a group instead of blackface or brownface some trailer park kid from Texas.

Analysts with an actual grounding in the culture they're trying to understand (target) would actually be good.
I find white Americans near incapable of understanding either the history or present of any culture on earth. Diversity is good here.

Americans are a bizarre species, even when they're thinking straight.

Posted by: Arch Bungle | May 6 2021 1:40 utc | 121

@ Arch Bungle

You'd have a point if they start hiring immigrant experts from abroad, like the japs did during the Meiji Revolution.

But this is just CIA hiring americans studied in american school, graduated from american universities, they are all americans in thought and thinking, just in different skin colors.

So instead of CIA in black and white, this is the CIA in color so to speak.

Posted by: Smith | May 6 2021 1:50 utc | 122

Hiring people who believe in this woke idiocy will certainly make the CIA less competent.

Posted by: lysias | May 6 2021 1:52 utc | 123

Posted by: Smith | May 6 2021 1:50 utc | 121

If that is case, then I think b should have left color out of it and just plain mentioned something like:

"we're now hiring a more diverse crowd of idiots than the usual pool of inbreds"

The other issue is that there are a lot of really smart, really accomplished "people of colour" now getting the dubious opportunity of a career in the CIA. But all your stereotypical W.A.S.P racist will see is "some woke, tranny mudshark".

My advice, dear b:

Leave the mention of colour and race out of any rational analysis you hope to do.
It's a losing game within any consistent system of rational or ethical thought.

Thank you and in my post at #109 I was endeavoring to inform of writings on your point:

"The hiring of a 'diverse' crowd is actually bound to make the CIA a more 'effective' organisation than it has been thus far - exactly because of it's diversity.

Diversity is good here."

From the second paragraph of Controlled Opposition: "Living in the institutionalized system that we do means that one small group can infiltrate grassroots organizations to change the perception of reality for all. By programming through the educational system and the media, an entire nation can be demoralized within a span of one generation or 15 to 20 years. Controlled opposition exists to subvert and undermine 'The Truth Movement' to protect The Establishment."

There has been a century dedicated to the refinement of these forms of infiltration, message control, media control, organisational development and coercion etc etc. Periodically there have been exposes and the occasional scandal as in the UKi where 'undercover' police agents took lovers and begat children as part of their job to 'assist' the state to control dissident voices. Many of these voices were just advocating for a world free of nuclear weapons or nuclear energy.

Another example has been the global systematic subversion of 'Green Parties' and the uncomfortable truth that the German Greens appear to be war makers and russia haters in drag. They are not alone.

$Billions of both state and corporate investments are at stake and therefore that equates to the National Interest being attacked by radicals. Huge sums will be spent hiring what we used to call 'Public Relations' companies to massage the media. They got away with transparent BS re the Skripals, they then went on to destroy Jeremy Corbyn as they are entirely free to do whatever they like and the sheeple will tolerate it. They just have to get the sheeple to think 'WOLF'. Integrity Initiative and The Institute for Statecraft are not anomalies, they are the vehicles - the paymasters - of the manufacture of consent.

So we should certainly consider/assume that whenever $Billions are at stake as in climate change, Big Pharma, Big Politics - the twisters and manipulators will be busy and, if they fail, there will be assassins as so many environmentalists, palestinians, chileans, columbians ... have discovered.

The CIA is the enemy of accountable government and democracy and this sad soul in the video is in bed with the enemy of all of the people.

Observe that seeming intelligent and gathering votes is possible, but it requires a lot of bu.....g talent too (Bill Clinton and Obama). But seeming stupid with a passable bu...g talent works as well, if not better, and finding a suitable person for that is orders of magnitude easier. Republicans grasped that sad truth first (Ronald Reagan), and Democrats resolved to matched them and exceed them. But GOP has an advantage of more experience and more genuinely stupid politicians. La lucha continua.

One satire went roughly like that: "Our expedition becomes more dangerous, with the trail barely visible and monsters on both sides: chimeras, manticores and logicians. Luckily, we are impervious to logic."

(stream of thought)

I was thinking about personnel reliability from the standpoint of the CIA. They need to recruit "trustworthy" people.
This sparked a memory about the famous button-pushing Milgram experiment. Which made me, in a leap, wonder about the psychological profiling
that is done for Missileers that stand ready to push big green buttons in nuclear silos.

I was surprised, and then I wasn't, when I discovered that an article promoting diversity in Air Force Missileers ran in the women's fashion magazine Marie Claire back in 2017.

The nuclear silos need personnel manning them that won't, at the critical moment, break into a sweat and hesitate as they visualize their wives and children incinerated in a nuclear flash...and *other* people's wives and children incinerated the world over in nuclear flashes.

They will push the button.

At any given moment, 90 missileers are sitting on alert, or "pulling crew," as it's known in Air Force parlance. Though women are notoriously underrepresented in the U.S. Military, the Air Force is better at gender equality than the other branches—there's a disproportionally high number of women in this role. By March 2016, the Air Force had enough of them to schedule an all-female alert.

The strict elimination process is part of something known as the Personnel Reliability Program (PRP). Encompassing security, medical, and psychological evaluations, PRP is described by Barrington as a way to "ensure that we have the most trustworthy people on alert, and that they can focus on the task at hand."

The article pressed the diversity button by profiling "Dinkha, whose mother is South Korean and whose father is Iraqi, and who herself speaks English, Japanese, and Aramaic".

The Milgram experiment.

They measured the willingness of study participants, men from a diverse range of occupations with varying levels of education, to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts conflicting with their personal conscience. Participants were led to believe that they were assisting an unrelated experiment, in which they had to administer electric shocks to a "learner". These fake electric shocks gradually increased to levels that would have been fatal had they been real.
The experiments began in July 1961, in the basement of Linsly-Chittenden Hall at Yale University,[4] three months after the start of the trial of German Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem. Milgram devised his psychological study to explain the psychology of genocide and answer the popular contemporary question: "Could it be that Eichmann and his million accomplices in the Holocaust were just following orders? Could we call them all accomplices?"[5] The experiment was repeated many times around the globe, with fairly consistent results.

If you are still with me you get a treat. Here is a comedy piece by Spaulding Gray.
He relates a true conversation he had with a missileer.
The comedy piece was performed in 1987 and so I expect that all missileers at that time
were males. Were they all cisgender? Not sure.

His piece says Covid was created and escaped from Wuhan but plays down the facts about its creation being a contract from the NIH and says nothing about the possibility of conscious release by other parties (empire).

I call it a hit piece because behind all his claims of we really don't know anything yet he pulls the trigger on placing the blame mostly on China.

What galls me about the pieces is the claim that all the avenues of exploration have not been taken but then proceeds to lead the reader to specific conclusions without exploring the on-purpose avenue since it was being contracted for this specific result. The problem isn't vaccination. It is vaccination with what and for what reason. In the US the main purpose of vaccination is to profit big pharma, especially that criminal outfit Pfizer, not to protect people from the virus.

You do not really have a choice of which vaccine you may think is safer and more effective for you to take, because politicization has made safer, possibly more effective vaccines from China and Russia unavailable in the US and EU.

This, I suspect, is the main reason Western politicians made such a concerted effort to keep the disease going through ineffective and contradictory measures through the past year.

Wokism is just another way to distract people from the corporate and financial oligarchy's looting and enslavement of their society.

One glaring omission is known continuity from Jap Battallion 731 China activity in unquestionable quest for race-specific type weapons to subdue and control Asia territory, espec China. They failed. USA [IRRC via Navy] received 731-notebooks and other "stuff and deals" in exchange for war-crimes immunity to 731 orincipals. Such did not sit dusty on shelf. There were similar Anglo-Amer interests. Then 1959 DNA found to be key code-repository for body chemistry, incl observable human classification of "body features'. I knew by 70s the quest would reach fruition probably in my lifetime.

Them Mullis' PCR tech. Then lots of CRISPR branches developing worldwide up to recent years. All over my head but clear a race-specific weapon was very! likely well into development with trials already taking place in piecemeal fashion under a 1000 cover-up and opaque paths. We are there now, I am rather sure...and I only a half-bright outsider who never studied biology. far that Bulletin piece is lower-quality pulp...not even reaching
limited hangout. But I'll finish it now.

Hence the incompetence.

I got nothing for that slippery cia shit cos a move like this was inevitable. Especially since contrary to right & ersatz leftist tosh there is nothing in the least 'left' about wokeism despite the line in nonsense some woke fools peddle.

Socialism - and there is no other type of thinkin that is even vaguely *leftist*, is about solidarity by unity, that is gettin everyone to stand together, which is the opposite of the woke shit, a ruling class construct explicitly designed to keep all us ordinary humans against each other arguing over rally divisive & heartfelt (on both sides) issues.

Of course this empire's jesuits were gonna play the woke card as wokism has become the lingua franca of the bourgeoisie and those corrupt, sociopathic & wannabe intelligentsia who run that corrupt cia organisation understand that if they want to do whatever it takes to keep amerika the boss and the USD the reserve as is, amerika's middle class must believe they are *doin good* even when they aren't.

It will work too, millennials were the bourgeois losers in 2008, they have slowly begun to get their heads above water , that shock was enough, they now in the same place as their Gen X parents, if via a different route. The gen-X's were got onside by seeing how much consumerist shit they could own from the family silver gettin all financialised, the millennials have been forced onside by copping a taste of how bad it gets if amerika isn't screwing the rest of the world to the max - at least amerika's steel fist is all about women, anti-racism, lbtq & appreciates how tough it is for an indoctrinated into the current flash, human, to work in this ugly world. No need to be ugly while yer acting ugly eh! Uh no, if yer acting ugly you are ugly. Trouble is those fools don't see that.

So we can all get a few laughs outta the baseness of that commercial, but I've got no doubt it will bring around the AOC voting fools who cannot understand her stance on fighting against the abolition of the SALT cap is exactly that, a stance, AOC has been given permission to jump up and down like a real lefty should on an issue that is gonna be just fine with or without her.
AOC will object to every rich fuck in amerika haveing their tax bill slashed, but it won't make a blind bit of difference, the cap will go anyway, bidet cannot risk losing his infrastructure bill over an issues the voters have been so gaslit about they don't understand what it means - even if they've heard about it - which thanks to corporate media, they have not.

Actually bidet is pulling the same stunt his support for waiving patents on covid vaccines is prolly a scam.

"The United States had been a major holdout at the World Trade Organization over a proposal to suspend some of the world economic body’s intellectual property protections, which could allow drugmakers across the globe access to the closely guarded trade secrets of how the viable vaccines have been made. But President Biden had come under increasing pressure to throw his support behind the proposal, drafted by India and South Africa and backed by many congressional Democrats.

Katherine Tai, the United States trade representative, announced the administration’s position on Wednesday afternoon, as the pandemic continues to spiral in India and South America.

“This is a global health crisis, and the extraordinary circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic call for extraordinary measures,” she said in a statement. “The administration believes strongly in intellectual property protections, but in service of ending this pandemic, supports the waiver of those protections for Covid-19 vaccines.”

Support from the White House is not a guarantee that a waiver will be adopted. The European Union has also been standing in the way, and changes to international intellectual property rules require unanimous agreement ."

As I understand it that EU support will also require unanimity. All it would take would be a Poland or a Hungary to say "Hell no we're not gonna back that communist shit" and the EU wouldn't be able to vote in favour of voiding patents at the WTO. Many euros in say, germany or france, will get angry but this isn't an issue that will hang around too long in europe because it isn't going to be them whose parents die.
The poles or hungarians or whoever will do as amerika secretly tells 'em to. amerika gets to make the billions and doesn't cop the blame.
this is the style of the bidet administration - not that creepy old joe would have a clue one way or the other.

Diversity wont bring about a more effective CIA. Not when your hiring depends on making sure all the "correct boxes" have been checked but the quality and competence has been treated as an afterthought. You may have a more diverse workforce, but if they aren't the best and brightest and operatives are trained in speaking wokism they wont fit in with the world outside of wokeism, the world they are trying to subvert. They will shout in their ignorance "Free Tibet", when Mao already freed it from feudalism

The meaning of 'woke' has been re-engineered through CIA linked media assets. It used to mean being woke to the things the CIA were really up to. Now its been incorporated into a divide and rule psy-op along with BLM and the fake riots in the vicinity of Trump supporters at the US congress. The purpose of the psy-op is to breath life back into the'two party' charade and the 'humanitarian intervention' narrative.

Good analysis but Nicholas Wade makes a transparently inept/clumsy attempt to lay the entire gain of function/lab leak at the feet of Wuhan institute.

Wade might be a scribbler for the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists but he is no scientist.

On at least two occasions he expressly mentions laboratories (plural) funded by USA Peter Daszak and never names any other than Wuhan. I know and have read the papers from at least two other published studies that are international collaborations that indicate USA based laboratories were in on the game at their BSL3 labs. There is a 2010 Australian team involved in another with USA and China! Maybe they too tired of the rigmarole and reverted to BSL2 practices and inadvertently handed the virus to the humans to evolve and transmit in their flying petrie dishes.

No scientist or scientific writer would set out on this journey and fail to list every other lab in receipt of USA funds for coronavirus research and to equate those labs with open community disease presentations from the epidemiological data or even rerun analysis of historical sewage or blood bank stores. Any reasonable person would list every lab and then proceed to build the evidence applicable to each by establishing a multivariate analysis function. This Nicholas Wade seems to be a Integrity Initiative apprentice.

I can see why atomic sciences have such a bad name when you have a transparently dishonest trash piece like this masquerading as SOLID SCIENCE and using BOAS as a front.

The alarm bells ring every time ZH is the source as they are virulently anti China and yet stoop to BS to prove their idiocy.

One tactic on these occasions is to polarise debate around two equaly unattractive groups of ideas which share unspoken assumptions. The groups of ideas and the assumptions can be carefully selected and promoted through computer generated social media personas.

I can validate some of what you are saying. Back when I retired from active duty in 1999 I interviewed for a Chief treaty negotiator position for the Bioweapons Convention team and interviewed over at the main CIA HQ in Langley. The position was a GS-14 so for me a lateral as I was already a GS-14 research scientist at my same lab and position I managed while in uniform. Shortly afterwards I was promoted to GS-15 to keep me from leaving.

As for living high on the hog overseas I cannot validate that part. My job would have required me to live in Geneva 6 months a year but without any overseas allowance. I would have had to share a CIA leased apartment with 5 other guys and everything else was at my own expense like local travel and meals while being away from my family half of the year. Geneva is horribly expensive so for that reason alone I turned it down. Interesting that the treaty negotiating team is run out of the CIA directly under the Deputy Director for Operations (DDO) who is in fact the person in charge of the CIA and not a political appointee who actually does nothing.

Attempting to parse that video is, honestly, like trying to wrestle with spaghetti.

For most of it there is just much ado about nothing:
"I am a woman of color" Yeah, whoop-de-do. I am a white male, big deal. I'm sure you've done much better for yourself than me, and good on ya for doing so.

"I am a cisgender millennial". Again, whoop-de-do. That is just a modern take on the phrase "I am comfortable in my skin" but, obviously, saying that is verboten in the current environment. Still, it means exactly the same thing, so I am monumentally unimpressed.

"who’s been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder"... wait, what? Hang on. Come again?

I suppose that's a manageable issue if she is in the CIA payroll office, or in HR, or she prepares budget estimates. But is she a case officer? Is she a field agent? I would have thought that GAD would be a disqualification for those positions.

But, hey, what do I know?

"I am intersectional," Pffft. So what, aren't we all?

", but my existence is not a box-checking exercise." Beaut. Mine isn't either, but I don't feel like bragging about it. That isn't an achievement, and certainly not something to brag about.

"I used to struggle with imposter syndrome." F**k it, I give up. So much BS. The entire speech is simply an exercise at Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!

What on Earth is she doing in the CIA? The Theatre is clearly her calling. TV as well. Heck, aim for the movies. That's right up your alley. Why are you wasting your time doing commercials for the CIA?

The CIA used to be run and staffed by White Guys with immaculate security clearances.

Being gay or trans or was seen a a disqualifying trait as it could be used to blackmail people.

I would like to see this as the CIA trying to clean up its act, although I place little faith in it.

as for your comment " Folks who can not leave their personal issues at the door typically muck up their workplace and create productivity problems." strikes me as boorish and totally insensitive, nearly as bad as the CIA's previous attitude.

I will spare you any and all other comments. I really do need to get outta here for good.

Occasional gloss is necessary to spruce up the image of what's been for quite some time a rogue agency. That that gloss reflects what's in vogue these days is just marketing 101.

I mean, from the recruitment of nazis and drug running, to wiretapping and extraordinary rendition, to coup d'etats and assassinations, to the commission of treason and lying to congress, and even editing Wikipedia, the blackguards of empire have clearly exceeded their mandate and are deep into wayward gangsterism.

A duty-bound and responsible Commander In Chief would immediately dispatch a division of marines to surround the nerve centre in Langley, give the occupants ten minutes to vacate the building with their hands in the air, and then burn the place to the ground.

Posted by: john | May 6 2021 10:55 utc | 156

As for gays in the CIA it is not a huge problem. Back in the closet days it as harder but if you admitted it openly there was no issue. All personnel requiring TS access take a polygraphy every 6 months. It includes the lifestyle poly which dissects your personal life in excruciating detail. My ex-wife #2 has TSSCI-Level 4 and unbeknownst to me was gay throughout our marriage but always passed her polygraphs as in there she was honest about it. What they want are agents that cannot be blackmailed and closeted gays used to be prime for this. NOw this doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. I also knew a high-ranked CIA Deputy Director who once told me they also screen for intelligence and anyone with an IQ higher than 110 is rejected. That seems fairly obvious in retrospect given the idiotic ideas they (try to) implement. Apparently, if you are too smart you question orders. The CIA failed operations and missed intelligence list is amazingly long.

Most countries try and recruit the very best, and this is especially true for Russia and China. This is why nutty operations like the Skripal debacle are so insulting to the FSB and obvious lies. But, you can see that the CIA actually believes these stories are plausible. MI-6 appears to have even stupider personnel than the CIA.

Steve P is way off on Aung San Suu Kyi: Her father cannot have trained any of the generals currently in command. He was assassinated in 1947. Current General in command Min Aung Hlaing was born 1956. Lack of basic fact checking does not instill confidence that Steve knows anything about what is happening over there.

Just a crappy pr-stunt with few meaningful conclusions to be drawn from it. At most, as I believe someone indicated, there may be concerns regarding a potential readjustment of the organization or their mission profile following a reassessment of US goals abroad, and any attempt of shaping the public discussion (presumably for push-back) would benefit from successful goodwill campaigns. Personally, I think that's reading way too much into it.

It's just a pr-department doing a job, half-assedly as per usual, of latching onto any easily exploitable trend or topic. One month you get a Soviet bear image worth several million dollars, the next a generic tampon commercial worth God knows how much.

Even if this was meant as a genuine announcement of intent from the CIA and they actually went full diversity, it wouldn't change anything and I disagree with the closing conclusion of our host. The organization itself, with the objectives before it and the methods at its disposal, is bigger than the myriad of people working individually meaningless desk jobs and pulling levers. Dysfunctional operation of a machine designed for assassinations, regime change, torture and so forth, does not imply harmlessness -- at best it implies a failure to achieve overarching objectives and at worst an increase in violence, brutality and fallout. Moreover, an emphasis on personal problems is an excellent distraction from work and task-related introspection, not that there's much risk of the CIA learning from its mistakes to begin with, even internally.

The part about feeling bad about the space that she occupies - Is that the CIA sending message that they are tired of being portrayed as the "bad guy"?

Also, I have been surprised that this "woke" (as in sleeper cell) thing has such momentum and staying power in spite of the fact that much of it seems somewhere between ridiculus and insane. But it would make sense if really it was just on of our subversive three-letter agencies try to mess with public discourse to prevent them from focusing on issues which are of interest. Appreciate you pointing that out as much as I loathe the evil witch, that steve P's history of Myanmar is so wrong - for a start her dad may have been made a sorta honorary general once the englanders put him in charge before departing, but he had never served before he had been a lawyer (surprise surprise) before being made a politician by the japanese occupiers of Burma. He had long claimed to be a communist until he cut a deal with the englanders who replaced the japs, after that he became more nationalist than socialist. However we should never forget that 'general' Aung decided that 'the way forward' ie convincing the majority population of 'burmans' that they ran the joint, was to crank up antipathy towards to so called hill tribes such as the karen people (clans who had been living in Burma/Myanmar long before Burmans invaded from Tibet via the border with China.

But Steve P's biggest deceit is his claim that Rohingya were driven out of Myanmar ( which Steve P cannot pronounce right) in 2010 when that horror story didn't occur until 2017.
The worst (from the point of view of us who loathe the Aung San Suu Kyi witch) is when 'steve the idjit P' claims Aung San Suu Kyi drove the Rohingyas out in 2010 when a quick scan of any Myanmar focussed site tells us that Aung San Suu Kyi was under house arrest until 2011. This fool's dates are so screwed up as he pushes his trumpist tosh that he blames Aung San Suu Kyi for stuff which he reckons happened before she scammed her way into power.
If you know anything at all about Burma/Myanmar & listen to P's spiel, the only viable conclusion about his ridiculous assertions must be "Listen!: "another is fool talking out his arse".

One can narrow down Wuhan as the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic conclusively by genetic analysis ("phylogenetic tree"). All genetic variations of SARS-CoV-2 that are currently circulating among mankind have a closely related group of variants as their ancestors that were all detected at Wuhan in early 2020. In fact, the variants found in Wuhan are so closely related to each other that their common ancestor is estimated to have excisted in mid/late 2019.

(That doesn`t rule out the possibility that this common ancestor had been brought to Wuhan from somewhere else. This is, however, complete speculation.)

The article from Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is highly important because it provides - to my knowledge for the first time - evidence about what exactly had been researched at the Virological Institute of Wuhan in late 2019. Up to now it could have been speculated that game-of-function research had been taken place there but it hadn`t been proven yet. (Some commentators here for instance suggested that Wuhan had only provided virus samples for research in the USA.) We now -know- that this had definitely been the case. Specifically, in a series of experiments the scientists at Wuhan used bat coronaviruses and added spike-proteins to them in order to deliberately make them highly infectious for humans. These are FACTS.

The evidence is the description of the NIAID grant that financed the research and the Daszak intervies form the 9th of December 2019.

Even if that was true (it is not: the WHO team had full access to the Wuhan lab and the SARS-CoV-2 wasn't there), you have to face the objective fact that gain of function is merely the technique: it doesn't mean a bioweapon is being produced.

Associating gain of function with bioweapon production is the same as associating transgenic with cancerous food, or knives for knife attacks: you're blaming the means instead of the ends.

The Few The Proud The Woke

@131 I supplied a quote from a 2017 article, "These Women Are the Last Thing Standing Between You and Nuclear War"

"the Air Force is better at gender equality than the other branches—there's a disproportionally high number of women in this role. By March 2016, the Air Force had enough of them to schedule an all-female alert."

How soon will we read that the Air Force has scheduled an all-Woke alert?

The article was an infomercial for recruiting Missileers - those gerbils that live underground in nuclear silos
with their hands at the ready over the nuclear missile launch buttons.

The article title can be understood two ways. The true meaning is that these women are the last - Final - cog in the machine.
The machine that ends humanity.
The glamour seeking absorber of a women's fashion magazine could read it to mean that these women are
**preventing** nuclear war. "These Women Are the Last Thing Standing Between You and Nuclear War".
What a dreamy starring role that would be!
Who would buy into such an article? Well, who buys into every wokeness?
Remember, the Air Force only needs
*The Few*,
The Proud,
The absorbers of the latest, fashionable dreamy narrative.

Shortly before I graduated from college, I spent a summer studying Chinese at the Middlebury Summer School of Chinese. I suspect the program was funded by the CIA, as my expenses were paid by some foundation that I had never heard of, and midway through the summer a CIA recruiter appeared to interview anyone who volunteered. I did volunteer for an interview, but the recruiter would have nothing to do with me. His excuse: I was a Classics major.

Funny thing: I was the best student in that class, and ended up getting the class prize at graduation. When I told a Frenchwoman in my class about what that recruiter had said, she was horrified. Apparently, French intelligence does hire the smartest applicants.

The left must be turned away from ideas that are a real threat to the power elites and towards ideas that will target other members of their own class.

Indeed. So like "wedge issues" within each, rather than between the ostensible "left" and "right."

Additionally, I see the elites' approach as a kind of offshoot of the Pareto principle. They use the media/newspapers/social media that they control to ensure that 80% (or more) of the national discourse intentionally focuses on divisive nonsense and 20% (or less) of what is of actual importance to citizens of the USA (or any country), i.e., stable employment, affordable healthcare, workers' rights, a non-polluted environment, and economic mobility. Instead the narrative(s) always must be focused on keeping them divided according to the travails (often legitimate) of ever smaller, niche groups and leaving no oxygen for the vast majority working class to unite on common grounds such as the ones I mentioned that all tie back to individual and collective well-being.

CIA ‘Woke’ Recruitment Ad Invites Ridicule, but Are Audiences Missing the Bigger Picture? (Robert Bridge for Strategic Culture)

"At first glance, it appears that the U.S. foreign spy agency, much like a number of overzealous corporations, overshot the mark in their latest promotional ad, where nearly every liberal identity is compulsively ticked in an apparent effort to ingratiate itself with the woke crowd. Or, on the other hand, did the clandestine organization reveal its global agenda moving forward?"

"...with military arsenals having evolved to the point where war has become largely impossible, lest we desire the extinction of the planet, the second most effective way to defeat an enemy, aside from economic sanctions, is through psychological warfare. The weaponization of divisive woke ideology against the people of the planet seems to be a foregone conclusion, and sovereign states had better wake to its reality."

Just got round to Bridge's article. I agree that he dug up some further ominous aspects, particularly as relates to the ultimate goal of Neoliberals--the eradication of national sovereignty:

"First, not once during this entire woke sermon was the term ‘American’ uttered. That may or may not be significant, but it does seem telling. Amid persistent rumors that the Western elite are hell-bent on laying the groundwork for their ‘New World Order,’ the first step to fulfilling that deranged dream – mentioned in a State of the Union Address by former CIA chief turned U.S. President, George W. Bush on Sept. 11, 1991 – would be to obliterate any notion of nationhood once and for all." [My Emphasis]

Bridge notes what I wrote about above:

"This demonstrates the inherent danger of the woke movement in that it severely atomizes human beings to the point where they become strangers even to themselves. In fact, it takes the whole concept of ‘divide and conquer’ to an entirely new plane."

As I wrote, Wokeism is yet another Machiavellian tool to ease the effort to Divide and Rule. And that goal has long been the point of all Empires. Bridge continues:

"By now it may be more obvious why the U.S. intelligence agency might be courting members of the woke movement, that is, assuming they were not the creators of it to begin with. Far from ‘bowing’ to its demands, the agency may see an opportunity for breaking down the bonds that unite a people – a foreign people, to be more precise. And how better to do that than to break down the bonds that hold together each individual person?" [My Emphasis]

IMO, we should heed Bridge's conclusion as it gives us more reasons to understand why Russia, China, and other nations are promoting traditional nationalism and pride in personal achievements:

"The colorful parade of endless ‘identities,’ promoted non-stop by academia, legacy media and social media, poses a direct threat to the safety and sanctity of the nation state. And with military arsenals having evolved to the point where war has become largely impossible, lest we desire the extinction of the planet, the second most effective way to defeat an enemy, aside from economic sanctions, is through psychological warfare. The weaponization of divisive woke ideology against the people of the planet seems to be a foregone conclusion, and sovereign states had better wake to its reality."

I always thought that CIA operatives were supposed to be unidentified. (Valerie Plame come to mind). With serious consequences for "outing" them. (Maybe I shouldn't have said quite that in this context)

So where does this lot come in?
Either they are there to change the image of the CIA.
Or, they are there as expendables if there is a massive popular "revolution", and the CIA is targeted.
Or their purpose is to infiltrate certain groups.

Soporific ads?

The blind lady with the dog, soothing music, voice override (She is acting not speaking), in a garden, flowing water, presumably in front of Langley, all the sequences slowed down - close up of the dog. (always useful showing touching CARE for our for four legged friends) SAFE, SAFE, SAFE.

In fact most of the sequences (I didn't watch them fully - I prefer Wil.Y Coyote for a bit of action), are aimed at creating the illusion of "peaceful" personalised, safe spaces.

Very clever. To infiltrate a "woke" group the CIA needs real woke candidates. The overall intelligence of a mob, is that of the lowest participant, and the CIA could use people like this to control the hysterical reactions of one. - At the right time and place. These examples could be identified with by certain types of person. It seems to me that wokists have not had the time or the education to develop seriously difficult dissenting personalities. Anyone who thinks that "cancelling" others, problems or ideas will make them go away...... needs a bit of reality to seep in.

Note that "masks" are another form of reducing individuality to form a potential mob, whose thoughts can be directed, as emotional reactions override reasoned ones.

There must be a link between woke and blind faith in authority. (in spite of a professed "rebellious attitude", most rely on parents, cushy jobs, Government handouts and showing appropriate obedience when asked to).

Unfortunately it shows where the world is headed, as "woke" could be used to break the "moral fibre" of countries if drugs, regime change and militants can't do it first.

Re identitarian politics: Atzmon: "a post-political manifesto: Being In Time"

This book is excellent. A must read for anyone who feels perplexed with the false dichotomy we call the "right" and the "left", but also dissects the "alt-right" and identity based politics of hard left liberalism.

Leaves you with an understanding of the hands you don't see in action, within the inner workings of our occupied Governments.

It identifies the ideologies [zionism] that have planted Identitarian politics and the tyranny of political correctness in our midst. We, the people, have been demoted into mere audience in a Greek tragedy that happens to be the story of our own destruction. The time is ripe to understand it all.

Yeah, Right:What on Earth is she doing in the CIA? The Theater is clearly her calling. TV as well. Heck, aim for the movies. That's right up your alley. Why are you wasting your time doing commercials for the CIA?

Wonder if I'll see her face during the next alleged terrorist attack or mass shooting by someone who lacks the executive function to terrorize his/her/whatever way out of a paper bag or tie his/her/whatever shoe laces even with alCIAda's tutelage and material support??? Perhaps she was hired for acting, production, or to direct theatrical productions.

@186 arby

Thanks for that link. Finally, a version of the ad that I can actually watch. It's a brilliant piece of knife work.

I loved the comment on Twitter that said: "You can laugh or you can cry" - sums it up.

This is the extended version of 'satire1' with extra images and dwells with greater depth on the 'woke' and philisophical abnormalities of our present society in both a modern and baroque sense. It offers no solutions yet is produced as a record that might identify some of the extremities of our times.
