Another study found that lockdowns will conservatively “destroy at least seven times more years of human life” than they save.
Professor Richard Sullivan also warned that there will be more excess cancer deaths in the UK than total coronavirus deaths due to people’s access to screenings and treatment being restricted as a result of the lockdown.
His comments were echoed by Peter Nilsson, a Swedish professor of internal medicine and epidemiology at Lund University, who said, “It’s so important to understand that the deaths of COVID-19 will be far less than the deaths caused by societal lockdown when the economy is ruined.”
According to Professor Karol Sikora, an NHS consultant oncologist, there could be 50,000 excess deaths from cancer as a result of routine screenings being suspended during the lockdown in the UK.
A Guardian analysis has found that there have been thousands of excess deaths of people at home in the UK due to the lockdown.
Infectious diseases expert and University of Edinburgh professor Mark Woolhouse acknowledged that the decision to lockdown the UK last March was a “crude measure” that was enacted because “we couldn’t think of anything better to do.”
Woolhouse said the lockdown was a “panic measure” and a “monumental mistake on a global scale,” adding “I believe the harm lockdown is doing to our education, health care access, and broader aspects of our economy and society will turn out to be at least as great as the harm done by COVID-19.”

Under the faux kindness of this new administration, there is face to support those working people – and if it’s turning into a bigger crisis than they thought, it’s because the “essential workers” are beginning to strike, and if they’re not careful they could have new unions on their hands, which would undo decades of work by the Democrats to co-opt those labor movements.
Keep telling us the crisis is worse than you thought…keep that up and you might reach the level of crisis we out here already know it is.
I suppose, if we want metrics, we could imagine that the “relief” monies and efforts will be somewhat puny, but just enough to stop labor strife. So we will get to see what that metric comes in at. That will be the calculation – because riots are nothing they can’t handle, but labor unrest is serious trouble.

Thanks for your reply! There’s a new troop assigned to us if you haven’t noticed. My wife was incensed that only Federal and related workers must get at least $15/hr instead of it becoming the basic minimum wage. I loved the way Sputnik helped us to see the real meaning. The speech writer made a cardinal error, and Biden’s not sharp enough to catch and rephrase, unlike Obama. Hopefully an opportunity will arise over the weekend to provide that quote in a livelier thread attracting more eyes.

If it’s to be the people, then it has to be a political movement, one that can articulate clear policies. If this were to happen in conjunction with new forms of organized working – one could speculate about this latter, but let that concept stand bare bones for the moment – then possibly a groundswell could occur that would gather force over the years.
The goal would be not to overthrow the existing order, but to replace it over time. This, through not only the movement’s elected representatives gradually taking their place in government (and being kept immune from corruption – another detail to be figured out), but also through an alternative economy developing that was immune to the Wall Street casino.
If the goal were to overthrow the existing order, then that’s a scenario I don’t even want to imagine.
So the popular rejection of this status quo with a clear example of the better thing that replaces it, is the ideal, I think.

How actual history proceeds will determine what is possible given the gigantic unknowns we face, which I had felt Biden clearly laid out in an unusual speech that had me hoping he would ‘hit the ground running’. (That was the only part of the proceedings I watched and listened to, the speech itself.) It all sounded as though positive domestic priorities would be on his desk right away – but I don’t count the sports/gender issue to be in any way a national priority, so that dimmed those hopes immediately.
I think you are correct, the pendulum swings back very slowly, and those 75 million who voted for Trump will surely be joined by millions who didn’t as the economy crumbles. I’d above all else like them to have positive avenues to explore, and serious respect, but that’s just me, so I didn’t put that in my post. But I’ll say a silent prayer that your best scenario is the one followed. There has to be a way forward that doesn’t involve further chaos even if it’s only inch by inch.

The South African government was even taken to court over the sheer irrationally of some of the regulations issued during lockdown. Some were down right arbitrary. For example shoes with open toes were not allowed to be sold. I’m still not sure how that’s supposed to prevent transmission of COVID-19.

You bring to mind a point my father raised during one of our Sunday dinner debates many moons ago, and although the specific example he used at the time is lost to me now the lesson remains the same.
My dad was railing against a particular human behaviour that was causing irreparable damage, the cost of which would have to be born by innocent third parties at a later date. He referred to the people engaged in said behaviour as expecting the rest of us in society to subsidise their chosen lifestyle with our own futures.
The gas frack-a-thon is a wonderful case in point.
Why on Earth should we all collectively be expected to put up with an industry that is largely based upon short-dicked men deriving their illusory feelings of masculinity by playing with Tonka Trucks, bull-dozing/drilling/fracking/pumping/compressing/piping/trucking a product that is rapidly following coal down the shit-chute of history, (and while solar/wind + battery storage is now globally the cheapest and currently the cleanest form of energy available), and leaving the tab for the damage to be picked up by future generations.
They expect, nay demand, that we support their childish and selfish lifestyle choice. I, for one, have had it up to the eyeballs with them and all their ilk.
Another example that comes to mind (with thanks to Jello Biafra) is using virgin forest timber to make wood-chips that is then bleached and processed into toilet paper. He referred to it as “wiping your ass with your own future”.
Yet another example are the assholes that hunt rare and endangered animals, “big-game”-style, which only ends up removing vital apex predators and other species that have a niche role in maintaining and equilibrium in the environment leaving a range of downstream knock-on effects.
In a similar vein, you could add an Australian example found in the kind of fuck-wits that want to go on a mass shark-murdering spree every time a surfer gets bitten by a shark, never being cognisant of the fact that it is probably in part due to the fact that we have taken most of the sharks’ food out of the ocean, so they tend to have a bite at anything that appears to be alive and kicking in the water, and, swimming at a hungry Apex-predators’ dinner table at meal-time has always seemed a bit foolhardy to one as risk-averse as myself.
But we really do need to look at (especially) larger scale behaviours among our species that need to be stopped (potentially even by force if necessary), so that future generations don’t spend their entire lives scavenging for food in a toxic hell-hole. I say this as a forty-eight year old man-child who has little-to-no interest in having children of my own, so I’m not really all that sure why a give a hoot, other than to say it has always felt to me since I was a kid that being “un-cool”, is really being “un-cool”.
The more I think about it, the more that it seems to be really close to THE core of so many problems that require addressing to save not only our species, but the entire biosphere as we inherited it. I think I just re-discovered the “pub-test” via a different route.
