Interesting to see all that come in the same week or so Posted by: Mina | Aug 8 2020 8:18 utc | 201 Mina Posted by: Peter AU1 | Aug 8 2020 8:33 utc | 202 Peter AU1 | Aug 8 2020 7:30 utc | 197 Posted by: tucenz | Aug 8 2020 8:40 utc | 203 Maybe cardboard used to wrap the fireworks. They do use this kind of fireworks in weddings (those seen on the vids, very primitive white flashes and bang bang Xmas type, not the sophisticated rockets). Posted by: Mina | Aug 8 2020 8:44 utc | 204 Just had the best laugh for some time watching the latest Useful Idiots with Matt and Katie. I am up to the 30 minute mark and loving it. Unfortunately they really do happen.” Posted by: Peter AU1 | Aug 8 2020 9:12 utc | 206 My theory about why Macron went to Beirut (a brave act, by the way, mingling with the crowd, which no-one else has repeated) is that he did a deal with the current dinosaurs in power (I agree with Mina in her description). Come and show sympathy (and thus show off France’s continuing influence), and maybe that will calm to a degree the accelerating anger against the government for its criminal incompetence. Long enough, at any rate, to prevent a revolution, and the old order being overturned. But the other part of the deal will be to address political reform. It really can’t be left any longer, and the cataclysmic catastrophe is a good departure point. The problem with a revolution for Macron is that the Christians would certainly be the losers, and Macron wouldn’t want that, showing off his preference with a visit to a Christian quarter, not a Muslim one. Posted by: Laguerre | Aug 8 2020 9:44 utc | 207 Laguerre Posted by: Peter AU1 | Aug 8 2020 9:54 utc | 208 In the French media since one year, the Lebanese Christians were rather vocal against their corrupt elite, its sectarian system, and France. Macron is probably trying as usual to reclaim the Roman catholics (France has never got rid of its own Christian mafia). Contrarily to Laguerre, I think that he is not giving a good exemple to the French (more than 1000 cases per day for a week, now reached more than 2000 cases a day since yesterday). This time I do hope he will contaminate someone in his close circle so that these bloody Übermenschen slow down… Posted by: Mina | Aug 8 2020 9:57 utc | 209 @Posted by: Peter AU1 | Aug 8 2020 7:59 utc | 198 Posted by: H.Schmatz | Aug 8 2020 11:41 utc | 210 Instead of attacking posters, could you read your own sources? I don’t mind, but is that really the fault of Macron? It’s pretty much the same as is happening everywhere in western Europe. Translating this pile of propagandist bullshit: Corbyn’s defeat in 2017 wasn’t because we (the Blairites) sabotaged his campaign, but because he wasn’t able to stop said sabotage. So yes, he would’ve won in 2017 if we (the Blairites) hadn’t sabotaged his campaign – but it was his job to stop our sabotage, so it’s his fault, therefore he’s unfit to govern. “Venezuela Sentences US Mercenaries to 20 Years in Prison” Posted by: arby | Aug 8 2020 14:09 utc | 227

Posted by: pretzelattack | Aug 11 2020 21:26 utc | 285 Along with other barflies I’ve been following Matthew Ehret essays as he slowly develops and displays his thesis that the current Outlaw US Empire resulted from an ursupation by British interests prior to the turn of the 20th Century. His latest installment is here, with perhaps his initial essay pursuing his thesis published here. Yes, I’ve criticized Ehret previously for some sloppy work, but I do think he’s onto something since his timeline coincides with the one I’m developing for the rise of Neoliberalism within the USA, which also happens to mirror Michael Hudson’s work. Ehret has advanced other theses, some of them very questionable, so his premises demand critical examination. It’s also difficult to determine just what it is he favors exactly. For example, he seems to favor Trump despite much evidence that Trump’s destroying a great many lives in a manner that when done by others Ehret protests.
