Beirut Blast Wrap-up

Updated below

Yesterday 2.750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse at the port of Beirut, Lebanon, exploded. The blast killed more than 100 people and wounded more than 4,000. Many buildings in Beirut were severely damaged. The pressure wave broke windows as far 10 miles away. Beirut's port is mostly destroyed. Lebanon's national grain reserve, stored in grain silos next to the explosion, is gone.

This comes on top of an economic and currency meltdown in Lebanon and during a exponential growth phase of the Coronovirus epidemic.

In 2013 Lebanese authorities arrested a ship (pdf) that had been abandoned by its owner:

On 23/9/2013, m/v Rhosus, flying the Moldovian flag, sailed from Batumi Port, Georgia heading to Biera in Mozambique carrying 2,750 tons of Ammonium Nitrate in bulk.

En route, the vessel faced technical problems forcing the Master to enter Beirut Port. Upon inspection of the vessel by Port State Control, the vessel was forbidden from sailing. Most crew except the Master and four crew members were repatriated and shortly afterwards the vessel was abandoned by her owners after charterers and cargo concern lost interest in the cargo. The vessel quickly ran out of stores, bunker and provisions.

Owing to the risks associated with retaining the Ammonium Nitrate on board the vessel, the port authorities discharged the cargo onto the port’s warehouses. The vessel and cargo remain to date in port awaiting auctioning and/or proper disposal.

The ammonium nitrate was stored in a quayside warehouse. The picture shows the 1,000 kilogram big bags labeled "Nitroprill HD" in bad storage conditions at the 'Hanger 12' warehouse in Beirut.

bigger

"Nitroprill HD" is a knock-off product of the trademarked Nitropril, a premium grade porous prilled ammonium nitrate manufactured and sold by the Orica Mining Services in Australia. It is used as a commercial explosive in mining and quarrying. The safety sheet of the original product says it "May explode under confinement and high temperature, but not readily detonated. May explode due to nearby detonations."

An Orica safety assessment (pdf, Appendix III) sets the TNT (military explosive) equivalence for fire of bulk Nitropril in big bags at 15%. 2,750 tons of Nitropril are thereby the equivalent of 412.5 tons of TNT.

bigger

A video taken from the top of the grain silos next to the warehouse shows uncontrolled explosions of small fireworks within a port warehouse near to where the ammonium nitrate was stored. The small crackling fireworks explosions are followed by a very huge one. The video is consistent with other videos taken from further away. What set off the fireworks which set off the ammonium nitrate is as yet unknown but it is assumed to have been accidental (see update below).

The damage as shown in the before-after picture below is huge.

bigger

A look at the quay from the east with the crater of the explosion in front of the grain silos. The silos have protected the western part of the city from more damage. Wheat has spilled out. The grain reserves of Lebanon are down to less than a month of consumption.

bigger

The ammonium nitrate should not have been stored in a warehouse within the city. But similar could be said of the Iranian ammunition that was stored at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base in Cyprus. It had been seized at U.S. urging en route to Syria in January 2009. On July 11 2011 a wildfire at the base set off the ammunition. The explosion killed dozens and destroyed the main power station of the island.

An aerial video taken this morning shows the utter devastation of Beirut's port facilities. Lebanon depends on imports. 80% of those come through Beirut port.

Pictures and videos from various correspondents in Beirut show their damaged apartments (1, 2, 3, 4). All windows are broken and glass shards are strewn all over the places. The breaking windows must have caused most of the injuries. According to the mayor of Beirut some 300.000 people have lost their homes.

The Middle East correspondent for the Independent tweeted:

Bel Trew @Beltrew – 16:57 UTC · Aug 4, 2020

My flat is completely destroyed. Not just windows blown in- like door and window frames ripped out. The cats are alive thank god.

Utter chaos outside St George hospital which has no electricity- medics are treating patients in the car park where the drive through COVID-19 tests were being done. It is now the ER, since the ER is destroyed. Patients screaming in agony in the background. #Beirut #Lebanon

Bel Trew's full report of the explosion and its aftermath is here.

Syria and Iran have immediately promised aid for Lebanon. An Iranian emergency hospital is currently on its way to Beirut and is expected to open later today. Syria dispatched medical teams and is receiving patients from Beirut's overwhelmed hospitals.

The explosion hit Beirut at a moment where the country is under U.S. sanctions and while its currency is cratering with inflation reaching 90% per month after a Ponzi scheme run by its Central Bank blew up. People who do not own foreign currency will be unable to replace their broken windows. The whole country is disintegrating.

Foreign aid from Arab and other states will now hopefully flow in and help to alleviate the suffering.

Update 13:40 UTC:

RFERL spoke with the captain of the ship that had unintentionally brought the ammonium nitrate to Lebanon. He confirms the ship's arrest. It also reports the cause of the incident:

Lebanon's LBCI-TV reported on August 5 that, according to preliminary information, the fire that set off the explosion was started accidentally by welders who were closing off a gap that allowed unauthorized entry into the warehouse.

LBCI said sparks from a welder's torch are thought to have ignited fireworks stored in a warehouse, which in turn detonated the nearby cargo of ammonium nitrate that had been unloaded from the MV Rhosus years earlier.

Independent experts say orange clouds that followed the massive blast on August 4 were likely from toxic nitrogen dioxide gas that is released after an explosion involving nitrates.

There is a short video of firefighters at the initial fire. Reportedly none survived when the fireworks fire set off the ammonium nitrate. Another video shows the initial fire caused by welding. It burns a while and then sets off fireworks in a first explosion. This takes the roof off the warehouse. A few minutes later the fireworks cause the huge explosion of the ammonium nitrate.

Reuters provides another detail:

The source said a fire had started at port warehouse 9 on Tuesday and spread to warehouse 12, where the ammonium nitrate was stored.

That the ammonium nitrate was stored for seven years was not the responsibility of the port management but was caused by some judicial quarrel:

The head of Beirut port and the head of customs both said on Wednesday that several letters were sent to the judiciary asking for the dangerous material be removed, but no action was taken.

Port General Manager Hassan Koraytem told OTV the material had been put in a warehouse on a court order, adding that they knew then the material was dangerous but “not to this degree”.

“We requested that it be re-exported but that did not happen. We leave it to the experts and those concerned to determine why,” Badri Daher, director general of Lebanese Customs, told broadcaster LBCI.

Two documents seen by Reuters showed Lebanese Customs had asked the judiciary in 2016 and 2017 to request that the “concerned maritime agency” re-export or approve the sale of the ammonium nitrate, which had been removed from cargo vessel Rhosus and deposited in warehouse 12, to ensure port safety.

Comments

“Once the Israelis had moved into Beirut he became again what he actually was, a colonel in Israeli intelligence.
One can be sure that Israeli agents know the contents of every warehouse in Beirut and particularly those in the port areas.”

So the barcalounger revolutionaries cannot allow the opportunity to dream up a conspiracy pass them by. Nevermind the facts don’t support these poorly conceived wet dreams. Always based around whatever dominates the ‘MSM’ despite their claimed disbelief in msm fakery.
The hypocrisy abounds.
Not one of the fools clinging on to “it has to be a set up” has expressed the slighted regret at the hundreds of dead, thousands of wounded, much less for the 30,000 mostly decent people who have lost their homes.
It makes you wonder, if they don’t care about people, why the love for revolution? Perhaps for them it is just a way to stick it up all those who made a better job of their lives than they did. Sad, but for the shamelessness with which they attack others who express any alternate opinion. Oh well the world won’t even notice the drop in hatred & vitriol when they kick on. The US is full of assholes ready and waiting to take their place.

The flight path of those US Navy planes are consistent with surveillance of Russian bases in Syria. IMO unlikely to have anything to do the explosion in Beirut.
And it would be really really dumb of them to fly near Beirut if USA was behind the explosion. They aren’t that stupid.
But it seems that someone wants to raise doubts and confound thoughtful analysis.

Peter AU 1 @ 203:
My workplace is within 200 metres of the Lindt cafe where Man Haron Monis took a number of staff and customers hostage back in 2014.
Monis did indeed shoot one person (a staff manager, I believe). The other person who died was hit by ricocheting bullets fired by the police. There was an enquiry into the police’s actions and the inquest findings were critical of the police failure to storm the cafe and rescue the hostages as soon as Monis killed the cafe employee.
Tony Abbott was given an opportunity to get all hostages out safely, if he would accede to some of Monis’ demands. Some of the hostages probably still resent him for refusing to negotiate, even if the negotiations were to come to naught.

@Mina:
I read that ridiculous Mehr News article. Just waving 4 radar “images” without any timestamp. US Navy sends spy planes to checkout Beirut after an explosive. (Yes, after, as it says right at the top of the article. Pepe is a hired pen, haven’t you figured it out yet?)

For once it appears the “incompetence theory” is the least objectionable hypothesis.
I just read this on Al-Jazeera. (Yes, I know, another BBC cutout, but interesting info):
“The [Public Works Minister Michel Najjar] said he followed up on the matter, but in late July, Lebanon’s government imposed a new lockdown amid a rapid increase in new COVID-19 cases.
Najjar eventually spoke the general manager of the port, Hasan Koraytem, on Monday.
He said he asked Koraytem to send him all the relevant documentation, so that he could “look into this matter.”
That request came too late. The next day, just after 6pm (15:00 GMT), a warehouse at the port exploded, gutting the harbour and wrecking large parts of Beirut.”
//
This is what I think likely happened. Mr. Najjar lit a fire under Koraytem. He picks up the phone and asks someone to go and checkout the warehouse. That dude calls back saying “oh my god, the door is open and anyone can just go in!”. So, the poor schmuck Mr. Koraytem very likely that very moment ordered someone to go and “weld those door shut!”.
Sorry folks.

“Only one reporter, Wilfred Burchett, an Australian, had braved the perilous journey to Hiroshima in the immediate aftermath of the atomic bombing, in defiance of the Allied occupation authorities, which controlled the “press pack”.
“I write this as a warning to the world,” reported Burchett in the London Daily Express of September 5,1945. Sitting in the rubble with his Baby Hermes typewriter, he described hospital wards filled with people with no visible injuries who were dying from what he called “an atomic plague”.
For this, his press accreditation was withdrawn, he was pilloried and smeared. His witness to the truth was never forgiven.”

Burchett went on to write famously about the Vietnamese struggle for Independence (psst revolutionary war) Entitled- Vietnam Will Win.

Revolutionary spirit is relevant, and critical for the entire worlds health. Vietnam’s Revolution for Independence an excellent example. They were raped, tortured, murdered, disappeared, poisoned by the U.S. Empire. The same US Empire that had revolted against the British Empire. Get the picture?
When Govts go Regime, murdering and abusing, they must be stopped for the Love of Humanity and human goodness to thrive. The US Regime went Rogue decades ago. who will stop it’s murdering and pillaging of the planet if not it’s own citizens?

An innocent youngster stopped me in the street earlier today and said:
‘Mister, why did the president said it was an “attack”?’
An immediate sigh of relief that this dear child was not asking why I am not-wearing a mask while taking in a leisurely stroll in the streets of my neighborhood! And the a moment of appreciation for the discerning question.
‘He wants to blame it on Hezbollah and Iran. He is alluding to a weapons cache. It’s been well known for quite a while that he is not a decent human being.’
The little darling made a cute thinking face, and then shaking head in agreement said, ‘Yeh, that makes sense.’
I smiled at this bright hope of the future and was about to take my leave when she said,
‘Hey Mister, do you know why we have better footage of the “carnage” of World War I than we have of the “war zones” in the fight against the ever ambitious molecule that is forcing us to adopt rather drastic “new norms”?’
I stood shamefaced and speechless before the dear child. With my head hanging down, I reached into my pocket of hypocrisy and took out the “emergency mask” and donning it, I mumbled as I slinked away donning the mask.

You have essentially exposed local and national court-systems, even international court-systems as the excellent control-points they are, aka choke-points. What long-term chess strategies!
I had not realized that until this Lebanon event and the remarks that “judges” had directly enabled the delay in disposition of cargo to persist.
As others also noted, what an opportunity to create a hidden monster, at virtually no cost beyond perhaps some modest bribery…and the trigger could be pulled, or not, at any future time.
I can only add that after a few months or years, persons with knowledge of the situation dwindle to very few in number and can easily be ignored…only the planners “remember”. Hey! Wasn’t that the crux of LF Prouty’s Secret Team modus operandi? Very workable, indeed.

1. The USA and Israel take over Georgia in 2003 and make it a puppet state.
2. In 2013 a shipload of Australian low explosives was to be shipped to Africa from distant Georgia. Why was it sent to Georgia? Why couldn’t it be used in that region? Shipping it to Africa is expensive.
3. The ship diverts to Beirut for “technical reason”. What? It was seaworthy and wasn’t towed. What technical problem?
4. The USA spends billions of dollars on intelligence and given the roadside bombings and truck bombings the past two decades, tracks shipments of explosives. When a ship full explosives diverts to Beirut of all places, you’d think the US Navy would stop it. And if that failed, the USA would be anxious to buy it all and move it far away for Hez. But no, it sits there for years.
5. The ship and its cargo were abandoned. Why? Certainly they could sell it cheap
6. Lebanon suffers from a severe financial crisis, yet no one sells the valuable explosives sitting in the harbor that could destroy half the city?
Lots of dots to connect here. If someone does, the picture is probably ugly.

@ juliania #178….Your writing does not touch on the seeming fact that, while all the parts to this human tragedy may not have been set up explicitly, the odds are quite high that these people were murdered…..no accident or act of your God.
These murders join a litany of other murders brought to us by the people behind this concept called empire that, like monotheistic religions, think that some humans are more expendable than others….lack of the right faith or heredity.
I just read on ZH (no link) that across the harbor from the explosion was a 400 foot excursion boat that over the course of a number of hours is now on its side in the water…..who knows what sort of hull damage it expereinced.
Too many coincidences and too much damage to not chew on this for a while. I found the post title word choice by b a bit strange because in english the term “wrap-up” generally means this subject is done being reported on and I don’t think that is the case so maybe a better term would be follow-up or current summary…no biggie but the reverberation from this event will be felt for some time and may may have balance shifting consequences in our geo-political world.
Why was that tonnage of Ammonium Nitrate at that port for so long?

Posted by: psychohistorian | Aug 6 2020 3:58 utc | 234

Turk 152 Silverstein’s story at his blog makes sense to me.
On the day of the explosion CNN interviewed a retired CIA agent who worked in Beirut in the 1990s. His take was there was little chance chance that the initial fire was in a warehouse that stored fire crackers, given the location he thought a more likely explanation was that military grade munitions were stored there. If that warehouse was run by Hezbollah it makes all the sense in the world that an Israeli sabotage operation started the first fire. If that is what happened it seems quite possible they were not even aware that the adjacent warehouse contained 2000 tons of ammonium nitrate. BTW, Silverstein is a quite credible so I believe him that an Israeli source actually told him what he wrote.

This is one of those times when I suspect Trump the broken clock might have it right when he called this a bomb attack.
Question is: who advised Trump? Netanyahu?
Here’s an Israeli official claiming Hezbollah uses Port of Beirut for receiving weapons from Iran.

“Israel discovered that Iran and its Quds Force have been exploiting civilian maritime channels, and specifically the Port of Beirut,” Danon said. “The Iranian regime is transferring weapons in various ways. They use commercial companies, mainly from Europe, to support Hezbollah and develop its missile program. Unfortunately, the Port of Beirut has become Hezbollah’s port.”

beirut blast
A week ago Israel had tanks on the Lebanese border and exchanged artillery fire with Hezbollah. Not since 2006, have these two engaged in such heavy fighting.
So could this be an Israeli ruse meant to pit Beirut against Hezbollah?

US Navy ‘detains’ ship with medical goods from China to Iran, “off Qingdao” in the Yellow Sea????
Second article I’ve seen, no China or US reporting so far. FARS reporting on it originally. The wording is still a bit vague and ambiguous.
If true, it seems like quite the provocation, with little moral backing should this escalate.
The supplies are for oxygenation equipment for Covid19 patients in Iran; even the most rabid patriotic ordinary American would object to any of their sailors being put in harms way for that sort of mission, should China wish to retaliate. Hardly surprising, but this doesn’t feel very well thought through.
Who of the US allies would back the US if China engaged a US warship that had just interfered in a hostile manner with a commercial ship with Chinese medical goods a few miles off China of all places, and traveling to Coronavirus stricken Iran? Seems that would be an even harder sell to European and Asian ordinary people, now more than ever.

The blast produces several types of shockwaves, seismic, which on every video arrives first and air shockwave, which travels several times slower.
from the web: Typical wave speeds are 330 m/s in air, 1450 m/s in water and about 5000 m/s in granite.
So the ground shakes first an all videos then airborne shockwave arrives.

As to fishy stories, not quite right explanations, seemingly nonsensical data, blather about a ship’s technical problems or malfunctions, etc …that is to be expected now that “Parallel Construction” is not considered lying in our [US] courts. It is the new normal.
This puts our ability to analyze data into mostly an overwhelming task…. forensic guidelines seem not to exist to perform due diligence in investigations. Communication has become one-way…there is no opportunity for 2-way communication. We the people are given lots of data without being able to question sources, or even identify sources beyond the hapless spokesman front.
When DJT’s Labor Sec. Alex Acosta was queried about his 2008 sweetheart deal as prosecutor re Jeff Epstein on which he signed-off, he replied to the effect “I was told to back-off; his pay-grade was higher than mine” or s/g like that. Not a single MSM or other media that I saw asked “WHO told you that?”. Acosta just quietly resigned and the matter went down the memory hole.

Fortunately for the rest of Australia saner heads prevailed in the Liberal-National Coalition government and the faction backing Malcolm Turnbull was able to oust this Mad Monk from office.
John Rainsford: “Warmongering musings of mad monk Tony Abbott”

“… In August [2014], Prime Minister Tony Abbott thought it would be a good idea to send 1000 Australian soldiers to Ukraine. Their intended purpose was to guard the crash site of the Malaysian Airlines plane that was shot down there killing 38 Australian citizens.
The proposal was quietly dropped after military planners advised that, as none of the troops could speak either Ukrainian or Russian, and would not be able to tell the difference between the militias of either country, it was not such a great idea after all …”

In this article by Sputnik on the aid offered by the European Commission, it is said that Ursula Von Der Leyen offered sending especialists for detection of dangerous substances, chemical, biological or radioactive, demonstrating that at high levels all possibilities are open…
The EU will allocate 33 million euros for urgent aid to Lebanon

The head of the European Commission in turn proposed to the Lebanese prime minister to send expert groups in order to detect dangerous chemical, biological and radioactive substances that could be at the scene of the incident. She also said that the EU can direct a military vessel to Lebanon to evacuate the wounded and supply additional medical instruments.
Von del Leyen also offered help to assess the needs for the reconstruction of Beirut and the country and promised her support in the negotiations with international financial institutions, the EC reported.

Also, it is mentioned that the blast took place near a Lebanese naval base….

The strong explosion that occurred on August 4 in the sea port of Beirut near a Lebanese naval base destroyed and damaged dozens of homes and cars, caused at least 137 deaths and nearly 5,000 injuries and left some 300,000 people without household, according to the latest data.

Yesterday I was wondering whether this was a way to debilitate, and shock, Lebanon previous to an invasion…Was the Lebanese naval base the target, along with the whole port?
Has not the US a naval base in Jounieh, near Tripoli?

The obvious thing to do is wait until that is clarified before requesting answers.

Yet there is reporters didn’t wait to confirm if welders were actually responsible for starting the fire. If they had, they would have info about the welding company and the welders.
And Israel hasn’t waited for clarifications before linking Hezbollah to the blast.
But we are supposed to wait? And accept whatever we are told?
This event appears to be the start of an operation to kick Hezbollah out of Lebanon. Macron’s conditionality of Aid is consistent with this. The likely strategy: turn the people against Hezbollah and literally starve Hezbollah until they leave. That probably means civil war and proxy war in Lebanon. But we should ignore this?

Actually, on a video of a Ukrainian patrol in action, “Ukrainians*” on the front line speak Russian, as does a surprising percentage of Ukrainians, including self-proclaimed nationalists when they do not make official speeches. The linguistic situation is even more complex. Most of the eastern Ukraine has a vernacular, Surjik if I recall, that is phonetically and grammatically close to Ukrainian, but with Russian vocabulary. (Southern Russian is similar.) Thus for those people it is equally easy to learn proper Russian and proper Ukrainian, except that you can hear Ukrainian sounds from time to time when they speak Russian, and Russian words when they speak Ukrainian.
Needless to say, uniforms and weapons were not providing a distinction either.

The silver lining — if there ever is one — is that, this happened during summer months. Much glass has been shattered, and it’s hard to cool, or heat rooms without glass in the window. Admittedly I am fitting data to a pre-selected conclusion, but It is such an interesting conclusion. Concluding that “The mice did it!” might very well be more accurate, but is too mundane for Hollywood to make a movie out of these momentous events.
Anyway, on to the American mini nuke narrative!
I think we can ignore the necessity for a blinding flash or a world-ending electromagnetic pulse from a little 0.5kT fusion device that is delivered in a bunker buster casing and thus detonates some meters below the ground. Unless the nuclear fireball erupts from the ground and expands beyond the debris that its shock wave has thrown into the air, I think it is safe to say these effects will not stand out to observers. Since a 0.5kT device is quite tiny by atom bomb standards, with even the one dropped on Nagazaki being dozens of times larger, it is safe to say that the device’s fireball will likewise be diminutive in comparison. Given that the fireball from the device dropped on Nagasaki was 0.1km across, assuming a small tactical nuke to only generate a fireball of about 10m wide doesn’t seem unreasonable.
In other words, if our mini nuke detonated seven or eight meters underground, and the area above the blast site was filled with smoke and exploding fireworks for a few hundred feet in all directions, then witnesses may be forgiven for failing to see a “blinding flash”.
Now about that colorful cloud…
When ammonium nitrate burns completely we don’t get a colored cloud. Low temp combustion will give us:
NH4NO3 → N2O + 2H2O
High temp combustion yields:
2NH4NO3 → 2N2 + O2 + 4H2O
Note that none of these decomposition products are particularly colorful. This suggests that what we saw in Beirut was just a partial and inefficient decomposition of the ammonium nitrate. In fact, given the density of the smoke cloud, it seems likely that the majority of the ammonium nitrate didn’t decompose immediately at all and was simply flung into the air in raw and partially decomposed forms.
“But using nuclear weapons today would be political suicide!”
Exactly! And that, of course, is why someone using a nuclear weapon would try very hard to disguise it as something else. Anything else.
While we do not need a cute little mini atom bomb to explain the disaster, one does not yet seem to be excluded at this point.

Why would one use a mini nuke to do that, if any other kind of explosive would suffice?
The usefulness of an atomic bomb is precisely for the opposite reason you cite: it gives a lot of bang for your buck (small amount of material for maximum of energy). To use a mini nuke to trigger a big non-nuclear explosion would be against all the warfare philosophy around using nukes.
A lot of materiel used in civil construction is radioactive (including concrete). It’s not surprising radiation levels around Beirut have risen after the explosion (as the materiel is pulverized and scattered around the air).
Yes, many more Beirutian citizens will die of cancer 5-10 years from now. The ones closer to the epicenter – who inhaled more powder – will die first. The same happened to the survivors of 9/11.

If Israel did this, then we might never know the truth, cause Israelis are clever at covering their tracks. I just find the welder, firecracker chain reaction trigger too coincidentally convenient, while the pieces of fierce Israeli-Hezbollah fighting on the border, Israeli claims of Hezbollah using Beirut port and other urban locations to hide weapons and Israeli threats to target such munitions depots in urban areas all expose motive; not to mention turning Beirut’s population against Hezbollah, which is the icing on the cake for Israel and very much within their divide the Arabs and conquer strategy. Not that Arabs need much of a push in that regard. Arabs are their own worst enemy.
Israelis have easy prey with Arabs; by far, the dumbest of the lot being Sunni and Christian Arabs. Whatever Israel does where these two Arab types end up as collateral; I could care less. I have zero tolerance for ignorance, and they invented the word.

Posted by: Circe | Aug 6 2020 19:15 utc | 286

vk @282: “Why would one use a mini nuke to do that, if any other kind of explosive would suffice?”
Why not? Tactical nukes are made to be used, not just to intimidate like strategic nukes are created for.
“To use a mini nuke to trigger a big non-nuclear explosion would be against all the warfare philosophy around using nukes.”
Except if this notion of the use of a nuke is accurate then there was no conventional explosion, or at least not much of one. The ammonium nitrate would be scattered and dispersed by the nuke blast and only partially decomposed, but non-explosively. The shock wave from the nuke would be faster than the propagation of the wave of decomposition within the ammonium nitrate. Basically, the ammonium nitrate would lose the explosion race and just end up being more airborne debris.
So why do this? Aside from the fact that Trump & Co can do it, which is enough reason in itself, a nuke is a more precise weapon. Ammonium nitrate is extremely hydrophilic, and several years sitting in an warehouse a few inches above sea level without climate control would leave it a very hydrated mess with unpredictable explosive characteristics. Unpredictable in that it might not even burn. If one’s intention is to destroy Beirut’s port area (and get back at those Lebanese for the whole Marines barracks bombing thing), then you cannot rely upon the ammonium nitrate to do the job. I mean, it might light off with a small initiator explosion, but there is just as good a chance that it will just sit there and do nothing.
Let’s face it, when you want to wreck a city, there is really nothing quite as cost effective as a nuke.

[Department of bad jokes]
Mediterranean was the place of most ancient complex maritime civilization. The only earlier example coming to mind is a trade route from the current Iraq to current Pakistan (Mesopotamia and Indus valley civilization), but the latter was a single trade route). Thus for thousands of years the waters were crossed by vessels that were sketchily inspected, registered and insured. The favorite location to legally registered such businesses was Atlantis, until there were so many unpaid claims that the whole country was blown up in the largest coverup in all ages.
But the tradition of sailing antiques that are afloat only due to daily prayers and legal only because huge stretch of that notion never died. One such antique vessel was abandoned off Odessa and later thrown into the shallow water by a beach by a storm surge, and since last fall, it graces — and pollutes — Odessa’s waterfront. Government refuses to pay, owners are bankrupt, local private businessman funded some failed operation to drag the polluting eyesore away. Perhaps in the future they will just cover it with dirt and make a pretty artificial island with flowers on top?

When you think of Israeli strategy, figure that there will always be a plausible deniability factor in the equation so that they can still expose what would be their justified Zionist rationale without showing their hand and incriminating Israel. By sowing suspicion shedding just enough light on a justified motive, Israelis can instead still turn other Arabs and the rest of the dumb mass against Hezbollah and then run and hide behind the plausible firecrackers story.
Yes, you know they’re that conniving. So go ahead, and be fooled again…for the Nth time.
That’s how they get away with murder again and again. You know Trump was bursting to expose just how clever his Zionist brethren are, and he almost spilled the beans…just a little.

I could care less. I have zero tolerance for ignorance, and they [arabs] invented the word.

LOL! “Zero tolerance”? Look in the mirror.
Etymology of Ignorance:

c. 1200, “lack of wisdom or knowledge,” from Old French ignorance (12c.), from Latin ignorantia “want of knowledge” (see ignorant). Ignoration (1832) has been used in the sense “act of ignoring.” The proverb, in the form “Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise”, is from Gray’s “Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College” (1742) .

I posted that link earlier. Indeed the two are eerily similar. It supports the idea that the effect is generated by similar weapons, quite possibly as Gruff explains @287

Let me create a hypothetical conversation between Yahoo and Trump, cause I’m not so sure they would be audacious enough to set off a nuke, but I wouldn’t put it past them to exploit a golden opportunity presented by stunning Arab negligence and stupidity.
Yahoo: Hey Donald, we came up with a great strategy so you can finally get justice for the U.S. barracks bombing and we can both reap other benefits as well. It has to do with a powder keg the Lebanese have sitting in a Beirut port. Let me explain…
Trump: That’s brilliant, and some firecrackers too!
____________
If anyone can respect deviousness; it’s Trump.
There are countless Moldovan settlers in Israel and you think the Israelis didn’t know that ammonium nitrate was taken off that ship, stored at the Beirut port, and the precise location?
And who’s better at knowing how to detonate that kind of stuff? The result probably surpassed their wildest dreams.
********
P.S. to Rabbit: You took it so personal…hmmm. I wonder why?

Thank you Norwegian!!!!

The jihadi’s in Syria put up a number of videos of truck bombs going off. The reason they are similar to the explosion in Syria is jut that. Explosions. The visible mist that forms behind the shock wave, I think, depend on humidity and so forth.

You took it so personal …

No. I didn’t.
But I did note your smear against Arabs and how you used that to excuse Israeli attacks on them.
And that’s when your own ignorance struck me as hilarious; in a pathetic and sad way. I thought “look in the mirror” would best express that.
Instead, you shoot the messenger. . . . I wonder why?

@ all the nukeheads
Seriously, why would anyone use a nuclear weapon with all inherent operational and strategic risks, when there is already a huge stash of high explosive material present that will cause a larger amount of damage than a tentative mini-nuke (has anyone actually seen positive proof of their effects? – please don’t answer with “9-11”, I mean officially acknowledged demonstration of effect.)
Also, why suggest that the ammonium nitrate detonation was initiated by a mini-nuke when it can just as easily be detonated by a bit of well-placed fireworks?
Hello, occams razor anyone?!?

Hell of a lot more “cost effective” too.
The idiocy never stops with this Gruff buffoon. Gruff, Schmatz and now this Circe eejit are a real trifecta of clowns.
A true “Clown posse”

Oh, sorry, I guess I was not being specific enough, Citizen X @ 284. I really wasn’t addressing the world at large, just this tiny corner of it. You might note I did say that this is not the time for speculation, and I will hold to the suggestion for our posts here that we wait until more facts are in evidence, while commisserating with the Lebanese in their time of tragedy. I do adhere to the likely explanation, which is the better one for a peaceful conclusion to events, though of course I could be in error just like anyone else.
There are some here who have in earlier posts pointed out the Confucian antecedents of China’s conduct in the world at large. One of the precepts as I understand is to behave ‘as if’ we were better, employing good manners and humility in the face of their opposites.
“The initial trust in realities unknown can summon those realities into being.”
I’m not an Israeli, nor am I Chinese; but I find elements of their traditions highly esteemable. Thanks for your responses.
