Beirut Blast Wrap-up

Updated below

Yesterday 2.750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse at the port of Beirut, Lebanon, exploded. The blast killed more than 100 people and wounded more than 4,000. Many buildings in Beirut were severely damaged. The pressure wave broke windows as far 10 miles away. Beirut's port is mostly destroyed. Lebanon's national grain reserve, stored in grain silos next to the explosion, is gone.

This comes on top of an economic and currency meltdown in Lebanon and during a exponential growth phase of the Coronovirus epidemic.

In 2013 Lebanese authorities arrested a ship (pdf) that had been abandoned by its owner:

On 23/9/2013, m/v Rhosus, flying the Moldovian flag, sailed from Batumi Port, Georgia heading to Biera in Mozambique carrying 2,750 tons of Ammonium Nitrate in bulk.

En route, the vessel faced technical problems forcing the Master to enter Beirut Port. Upon inspection of the vessel by Port State Control, the vessel was forbidden from sailing. Most crew except the Master and four crew members were repatriated and shortly afterwards the vessel was abandoned by her owners after charterers and cargo concern lost interest in the cargo. The vessel quickly ran out of stores, bunker and provisions.

Owing to the risks associated with retaining the Ammonium Nitrate on board the vessel, the port authorities discharged the cargo onto the port’s warehouses. The vessel and cargo remain to date in port awaiting auctioning and/or proper disposal.

The ammonium nitrate was stored in a quayside warehouse. The picture shows the 1,000 kilogram big bags labeled "Nitroprill HD" in bad storage conditions at the 'Hanger 12' warehouse in Beirut.

bigger

"Nitroprill HD" is a knock-off product of the trademarked Nitropril, a premium grade porous prilled ammonium nitrate manufactured and sold by the Orica Mining Services in Australia. It is used as a commercial explosive in mining and quarrying. The safety sheet of the original product says it "May explode under confinement and high temperature, but not readily detonated. May explode due to nearby detonations."

An Orica safety assessment (pdf, Appendix III) sets the TNT (military explosive) equivalence for fire of bulk Nitropril in big bags at 15%. 2,750 tons of Nitropril are thereby the equivalent of 412.5 tons of TNT.

bigger

A video taken from the top of the grain silos next to the warehouse shows uncontrolled explosions of small fireworks within a port warehouse near to where the ammonium nitrate was stored. The small crackling fireworks explosions are followed by a very huge one. The video is consistent with other videos taken from further away. What set off the fireworks which set off the ammonium nitrate is as yet unknown but it is assumed to have been accidental (see update below).

The damage as shown in the before-after picture below is huge.

bigger

A look at the quay from the east with the crater of the explosion in front of the grain silos. The silos have protected the western part of the city from more damage. Wheat has spilled out. The grain reserves of Lebanon are down to less than a month of consumption.

bigger

The ammonium nitrate should not have been stored in a warehouse within the city. But similar could be said of the Iranian ammunition that was stored at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base in Cyprus. It had been seized at U.S. urging en route to Syria in January 2009. On July 11 2011 a wildfire at the base set off the ammunition. The explosion killed dozens and destroyed the main power station of the island.

An aerial video taken this morning shows the utter devastation of Beirut's port facilities. Lebanon depends on imports. 80% of those come through Beirut port.

Pictures and videos from various correspondents in Beirut show their damaged apartments (1, 2, 3, 4). All windows are broken and glass shards are strewn all over the places. The breaking windows must have caused most of the injuries. According to the mayor of Beirut some 300.000 people have lost their homes.

The Middle East correspondent for the Independent tweeted:

Bel Trew @Beltrew – 16:57 UTC · Aug 4, 2020

My flat is completely destroyed. Not just windows blown in- like door and window frames ripped out. The cats are alive thank god.

Utter chaos outside St George hospital which has no electricity- medics are treating patients in the car park where the drive through COVID-19 tests were being done. It is now the ER, since the ER is destroyed. Patients screaming in agony in the background. #Beirut #Lebanon

Bel Trew's full report of the explosion and its aftermath is here.

Syria and Iran have immediately promised aid for Lebanon. An Iranian emergency hospital is currently on its way to Beirut and is expected to open later today. Syria dispatched medical teams and is receiving patients from Beirut's overwhelmed hospitals.

The explosion hit Beirut at a moment where the country is under U.S. sanctions and while its currency is cratering with inflation reaching 90% per month after a Ponzi scheme run by its Central Bank blew up. People who do not own foreign currency will be unable to replace their broken windows. The whole country is disintegrating.

Foreign aid from Arab and other states will now hopefully flow in and help to alleviate the suffering.

Update 13:40 UTC:

RFERL spoke with the captain of the ship that had unintentionally brought the ammonium nitrate to Lebanon. He confirms the ship's arrest. It also reports the cause of the incident:

Lebanon's LBCI-TV reported on August 5 that, according to preliminary information, the fire that set off the explosion was started accidentally by welders who were closing off a gap that allowed unauthorized entry into the warehouse.

LBCI said sparks from a welder's torch are thought to have ignited fireworks stored in a warehouse, which in turn detonated the nearby cargo of ammonium nitrate that had been unloaded from the MV Rhosus years earlier.

Independent experts say orange clouds that followed the massive blast on August 4 were likely from toxic nitrogen dioxide gas that is released after an explosion involving nitrates.

There is a short video of firefighters at the initial fire. Reportedly none survived when the fireworks fire set off the ammonium nitrate. Another video shows the initial fire caused by welding. It burns a while and then sets off fireworks in a first explosion. This takes the roof off the warehouse. A few minutes later the fireworks cause the huge explosion of the ammonium nitrate.

Reuters provides another detail:

The source said a fire had started at port warehouse 9 on Tuesday and spread to warehouse 12, where the ammonium nitrate was stored.

That the ammonium nitrate was stored for seven years was not the responsibility of the port management but was caused by some judicial quarrel:

The head of Beirut port and the head of customs both said on Wednesday that several letters were sent to the judiciary asking for the dangerous material be removed, but no action was taken.

Port General Manager Hassan Koraytem told OTV the material had been put in a warehouse on a court order, adding that they knew then the material was dangerous but “not to this degree”.

“We requested that it be re-exported but that did not happen. We leave it to the experts and those concerned to determine why,” Badri Daher, director general of Lebanese Customs, told broadcaster LBCI.

Two documents seen by Reuters showed Lebanese Customs had asked the judiciary in 2016 and 2017 to request that the “concerned maritime agency” re-export or approve the sale of the ammonium nitrate, which had been removed from cargo vessel Rhosus and deposited in warehouse 12, to ensure port safety.

I think the moral of this story is economic, specificly the way traders flag ships in bullshit countries so to save a couple bucks, whoever can afford gaint shipful of stuff should afford to ship it in a safe way.

Can we really trust the initial narrative? It would be the same as believing the initial story of 911: 19 hijackees with box cutters caused the devastation in Lower Manhattan, and at the Pentagon, and don’t forget the hole in the ground in Shanksville, that swallowed an entire jet airliner, without leaving a trace of evidence behind.

LBCI said sparks from a welder’s torch are thought to have ignited fireworks stored in a warehouse, which in turn detonated the nearby cargo of ammonium nitrate that had been unloaded from the MV Rhosus years earlier.
Welder’s torch? Seems doubtful.
Welder’s are usually very careful. Wouldn’t they be more so when the warehouse is full of fireworks? Did the welder’s not bring fire extinguishers? Are there none in a building where fireworks are stored?
And from the fires and explosions it appears that the fireworks (if that’s what they were) were stored in the middle of the building – right where the ammonia nitrate was! Strange.
The fumes on the right side of the warehouse are black. Usually that means burning fuel. And there’s a lot of smoke BEFORE fireworks go off.
And why do this welding NOW? Was it such a great concern in the middle of a pandemic? Any news reports of people breaking into the warehouse to steal fireworks? (We haven’t heard of any, so I’d guess not.)
Simply put, the fire is suspicious.

… what is the welding company? How long has it been in business? Who are the owners/investors?
… who ordered the welding? Who signed off on it? What were the circumstances of the need for welding? Was the job competitively bid? Who let the welders on the property and who supervised them? What preliminary/precautionary steps were taken?

How could Mossad NOT know?
Does Mossad constantly seek AOO (attacks of opportunity)?
How could Mossad NOT constantly seek AOO’s to destabilize, disrupt, destroy its avowed enemies? That is what Zionist/Mossad does- pure and simple.
Horrendous result for Lebanon = Great deal for Zionist. Israel trolls Lebanon offering humanitarian aid- are you fucking kidding me? How many Israelis were dancing this time?

Unless somebody deliberately lit a fire, that’s about it. The photo b has in his piece is maintenance work being done at a door. I just hope that every luxury yacht berthed at the marina west of the port is a total loss.
The level of corruption, infighting, and greed riddling the government has been a local topic of conversation every time I visited Beirut. From what I observed on my visits I can easily believe that the cause was accidental, preventable, and of course massively tragic for the majority of citizens.
The tall apartments that bordered the port area and around to the west were high rent. The Beirut middle class has been hit very hard here.
Firefighters were called to the scene to fight the initial fire. They had time to arrive, perhaps begin work, and then die. I don’t believe that potential saboteurs could predict in advance (or wish to rely on) the chaotic progression of fire and explosion that set off the ammonium nitrate blast.
Now the vultures are circling – we can hope that sufficient help will arrive in a timely fashion and in sufficient quantity to stave off their approach.

I would be curious as to the religious inclination of the Russian owner
that abandonned a cargo of 500,000,00 Euros as well as his ship to the Lebanese authorities.
Whas he paid and did he conspire to gift Lebanon with this new type
of a Trojan Horse?
Where was or where is and who is the original consignee for the goods being carried?
Australia to Mozambique does not transit through the Mediterranean.
Why was the vessel close to Lebanon if it left Australia for Mozambique.
There is something truly fishy in the whole story. One can always count on greed to obscure people’s reasonning. Trojan horses are based on greed.
Why did the judicial authorities insist on keeping that lethal merchandise in the belly of Beyrouth? Were they accomplices to the whole scheme?
Phalangists have always been close to Israel and anti Palestinians. Remember Sabra and Chattilah. Treason from them cannot be excluded. In their fight against the Hezbollah, they are game for anything.
As far as cloak and dagger scenarios, this one is tops.
One of the cleverest and cheapest operations to bring your enemies to their knees.

Vasco da Gama @95: “Another curiosity is this: the last frame with a dark spot is frame 43 (~1.43s @30fps), roughly extrapolating the number of frames to reach its supposed target (center of the explosion) it would take an additional 18 frames (0.6s), the explosion itself happens 52 frames (1.73s) later instead – corresponding to a full second later than expected. This would imply a delayed detonation.”
Unfortunately, such a delay is precisely what one would expect from a “bunker buster” type device that was intended to detonate below the surface of the ground.
I would feel more comfortable about our disappearing bird having simply been ignored by the camera if the camera had “noticed” the bird again in a different frame after passing different objects in the background. Sadly, there are not even any artifacts where flaky image correction software patched bird-shaped holes in the background. A munged i-frame might cause the bird to adopt the colors of its background, but each subsequent p-frame will continue updating that frame with any changes. Unless the bird really has disappeared from the camera’s sensors altogether this will leave a trail of artifacts across the image.
Anyway, that explanation for the bird’s disappearance is pretty good, but not convincing enough.

I have a suspicion that object was a pidgin. I am sure it flew in behind the smoke somewhere rather than being close to the camera which is why I thought it must have been something else. In one or two videos I saw pidgins and I ran onto a video that one show the object heading behind or into the smoke that had been slowed down and it then stated to look like a pidgin. I thought a pidgin would be pretty much invisible at that distance, but that video that shows the full sequence of the initial fire, then the two explosions, it could be seen that no extra missile or whatever was required.

@127 Libanon was it destination, it just was not redistributed as intended because the judge prevented it and the owner already got paid for delivering.
from the link at @98:
The ship called Rhosus was going under the flag of Moldova from Batumi in Georgia to Mozambique. It was detained in October 2013 by Lebanese authorities after it stopped in Beirut due to a malfunction on board.
The cargo was checked and detained after the port authorities said it was ‘lacking documents and conditions necessary for transportation.
So in a middle of a civil war they are storing ammonium nitrate very unsafely in the middle of Beiroet from a ship which was accidentally come in because it was unsafe to transport. This is BS.

Sad to hear that only the port authority managers are under house arrest when they were adhering to court orders to retain the ‘evidence’ in an ongoing legal dispute after SIX YEARS.
That is not a judicial system but more like a high level bribery cyclotron.
Dangerous materials that are considered evidence in judicial proceedings should be substituted with photograph and sworn reports then immediately disposed of. In this case the storage costs were punishing the Port Authority with a remote chance of recovery. Better to simply record the evidence and give the ammonium niytaye to farmers and boost the economy as well as lease out the space for next confiscated load or rented storage.
The Lebanese judicial officers that issued a judgement to jeopardise public safety at the alter of ‘procedural niceties’ should be house arrested as well.
This is not a justice system. It is a tool, held hostage to capitalist shenanigans. And Lebanon is not alone.
Let us not run about looking at flapping pigeons and ‘incoming objects’ but rather take a close look at what is going on in your neighbourhood and the occasional quackery that passes for judicial ‘authority’.

Doesn’t that just give you confidence? If true- the fire started as a result of closing a gap in the fence allowing access to the explosive material? Um ok- how long was it accessible to “unauthorized entry”?
Was there foul play in material residue left behind that would ignite a welders torch on the work resulting in the fire? Dead men tell no tales- but who the hell really knows how the initial fire started? Just throwing ideas around but clearly there seems to have been plenty of time for an orchestrated AOO with plenty of negligence as cover.

I am seeing that as soon as I left for the beach, Lurk and Lozion thought of making a break…
Making an overview of what has been commented, I am seeing that the banning of the nuke issue has been extended to other outlets where previosuly there were interesting theories about other things apart from AN, whih,c btw, some mining experts affirm need a combustible to blast, being quite stable by himself, hence it was there for all these years without harming anybody, eventhough when some other years temperatures could reach 40ºC in Beirut in August, not yesterday, when it was seme comfortable 30ºC…the same as here, a delcious day, even feeling some chils when returning home still with my hair wet late in the afternoon…
Some interesting commenter at The Saker, jumped over The Saker´s prohibition on commenting on nukes and remitted us to Meyssan´s take, who is recommending, at the end of his short tak on the issue, some interesting reading, especially the one related to a report published by the Russian review, Odnako about the assasination of Rafik Hariri, where it is explained the astonishing effects of the bomb who was set for finishing Hariri, the father, and, curiously, also some strange “birds” are mentioned, along with some witnesses who heard some noise of aircraft or air “devices” previously, as happened with the explosion of yesterday, which was reported at first moments by some media/people, and now has been conveniently silenced in the media and ridiculed here in this forum by some clearly Israelis and a japanese or two ( well, Interntionsl Fascist has operatives all around the world, the japanese just took over once I left so tha the other lurkers could have lunch…)…Obviously, everybody has a lot of fear of Mossad´s tentacles…me included…
Also interesting data on why we can not expect much justice from the Special Tribunal for Lebanon…

A pigeon flying beyond the smoke from the camera is improbable as it would require a very substantially sized pigeon operating at speeds that pigeons are not really designed for. The further the object is from the camera the faster it must be moving to match the observed speed in the video and the larger it must be to match the size. Closer objects can be moving at a relatively leisurely pace and still achieve the same apparent speed, while distant objects… well, if it was a pigeon in the far distance, then it had the afterburners going.
To be certain, it is possible for pigeons to move that fast, but they would require mechanical assistance. A compressed air cannon, for instance, would really get them hustling. Such devices actually exist for testing aircraft windshields and such, but I imagine there are not so many pigeon cannons in Beirut due to the lack of an aerospace industry there. Doubtless the Russians have some because they like to design and build high performance aircraft, but it is my suspicion that it would have been noticed by now if Russians were in the habit of firing supersonic pigeons across the Beirut skyline.

Unfortunately, such a delay is precisely what one would expect from a “bunker buster” type device that was intended to detonate below the surface of the ground.

I had to look it up:

The HTSF was designed for current and future penetrator weapons to define the fuze function point as either a desired distance within a desired void or a depth of burial beneath a hard layer. It operates in one of three modes: hard-layer detection, void detection, and path-length integration. It also has an adjustable backup time delay that is set in 1-msec increments with a maximum delay of 250 msec.

Don’t get me wrong WG… In all honesty, as I first saw the video the object immediately associated itself as a bird in my mind (presumably given its apparent “gait”*, maybe only I see this). I certainly need to be open to the possibility that it may be something else. It actually being a bird would constitute nothing out of ordinary, even likely (birds are all over the several videos), on the other hand, it being a missile constitutes an extraordinary allegation, I expect extraordinary “dissectable” evidence. Occam’s razor, confirmation bias or whatever else one would call it, I remain convinced of the first hypothesis.
*In case you missed this link in the previous thread, where I call it “variable aspect”, hence the tongue in cheek “flapping wings” and a close up view when referring to its “cousin”.
Alike many commenters here I haven’t excluded possible sabotage.

Poor bird, it would have to its feathers glued on well to be a high performance Russian model.
I do think there is something deceiving about that video though and the way we are looking at it. Earlier I had thought it may have been something like a spin stabilized missile but watching the movement it looked very much like the wing movement of a pigeon they bring their wings right down like they are clapping. They can fly fast – up to 160 kph, so I’m thinking a bird flying f,ast plus what we are looking at being a bit deceiving in some way.

A nuclear weapon, no matter how small, would have produced many times more heat than this explosion. The city would still be burning, deaths would be in the thousands and injuries in the tens of thousands. Not to mention the flash of light, a different sort of mushroom cloud, different colored smoke, a faster moving concussion wave, EMP qualities and a good deal of radiation.
Absolutely not a nuclear weapon. All the characteristics of a large ammonium nitrate explosion. Is there a small possibility of an element of sabotage here? Sure, but even in that case there is gross incompetence leaving that stuff there for 6-7 years.

Fireworks and Fertilizers – got it.
Someone is floating the idea, based upon a supposed inside source that a Hezbollah ‘weapons depot’ was struck by Israel as part of its ongoing regional campaign of doing this sort of thing, but Tel Aviv didn’t know about the close vicinity of AN. Hard to believe this amount of that material wasn’t well known by those whose business it is to know.
But, really I think this was all a distraction from the revelation that Prince Andrew used a Spitting Image puppet of himself to sexually play with seventeen year old women.

A large Christian population is living near the Beirut port. Interesting also that the largest Christian populations in Japan was at Nagasaki , which got the atomic bomb 75 years ago , also in August
Israel has pretty good intelligence. They would have known about the large stores of ammonium nitrate. Indeed, they did a lot of covert truck bombing 40 years ago in Lebanon. Bombing and explosions are their specialty. We lost 300 marines in one attack -blamed on others. Wouldn’t be hard to arrange the detonation and make it look accidental
Last week, Israel claimed a planned infiltration attempt from Lebanon by Hezbollah fighters, as justification for the heaviest exchanges of fire at the Israel-Lebanon border since the 2006 war that they lost. Lots of oil and gas off Lebanons coast. We want it.
Not buying the accident theory. Might be an accident but have to consider the alternative. Trump says it was an attack. Pompeo said Covid a live exercise. Maybe both speak truth (in the middle of all their lies) knowing they can get away with it

Potassium nitrate plus sulphur plus charcoal makes for an interesting byproduct if mixed properly – China is now involved. Do not try mixing above substances at home and elsewhere only under adult supervision.
Posted by: Formerly T-Bear | Aug 5 2020 18:27 utc | 102
I had some experience in that direction, but we used saltpetre, not potassium nitrate, and when the adults discovered that activity I had the most severe body penalty in my life. The problem was that sulphur had the form of a very fine powder, and with charcoal it created a greenish dust that we (me and fellow culprits from my elementary school) tried to remove, but some visible traces remained. Mom spotted this strange dust instantly, and as she started to look into nooks and crannies, yea, green dust everywhere! My father had experience in military (artillery), so when he came back he recognized gunpowderish character of the dust (our proportions were very much off, explosive power was mediocre), and decided that some stern discipline is merited.

I agree with Citizen X
As I mentioned @Aug5 19:03 #108, you can see two colors of smoke before the ammonia nitrate explosion (which has an orange colored smoke).
The grey smoke is just stuff burning.
But the black smoke is an indicator of burning fuel. This would be logical given how quickly the fire spreads and grows. It would also suggest foul play.
Not a welder’s torch.
See @108 for more.

Bombs, or conventional explosives don’t make much of a crater if on the surface, otherwise must be buried intentionally, or buried by impact. People would use examples of WW-2 bombing craters, or Vietnam craters, and all of those were large heavy bombs, and hitting the ground and penetrating before the triggering would be complete, thus a crater, Hell, Trinity was pretty close to the ground, and no crater at all. This was an impact, this was a large deep crater.

Much of the Arab world a mess because one will try and use an outside power to get one up on the other group. Iran and Lebanon are particularly bad. They will remain occupied and controlled through divide and conquer for as long as they keep pulling that petty crap. I think Hezbollah sees this and perhaps some of the Shia militias in Iraq. Then on top of that is the corruption…

A small nuclear device underground would not create a flash, but nor would it create the NO2 fumes.
An atmospheric nuclear explosion does create nitrogen dioxide but it creates a very bright flash. The NO2 is created by the combination of atomospheric nitrogen and oxygen in the radiation heated fireball.
So the combination of no flash and lots of nitrogen dioxide, along with the known fact that amonium nitrate was stored there make speculation about nuclear causes not worth considering further.
Trinity was exploded on top of a tower so did not create a significant crater. Past examples of amonimum nitrate explosions on the surface of the ground have created big craters.

This was an impact, this was a large deep crater.

I doubt that. This is a seaboard site filled by dredge reclamation as are most port sites of modern construction.
The fill is rolled to a reasonable compaction but 400 tons equivalent TNT explosion on the surface will do a fair excavation and leave sizeable crater.
There may be a geotechnical report somewhere that will tell of the construction and fill but I doubt that this port is built on a convenient rock shelf.

I’m a journalist myself and as that happened this jet went overhead very very low we looked up to try and figure out what it was and as that happened there was a blinding flash and all the windows and doors went immediately…” At no point does Leila say she witnessed a jet, but you want us to treat this as proof of the existence of a jet or similar. CIA declassified 2012 report on- “Lebanon’s Ports: Gateway for Instability and Terrorism”
https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/docs/CIA-RDP87T01127R001201150001-7.pdf
Perhaps that would help explain why Judges ignored and did not act on multiple requests over years to deal with the stockpile of AN?
The depth of the report confirms that both CIA and MOSSAD are very much aware of using Lebanon’s ports for Terrorism, Instability and who controls what.

The route use both Suez Canal and Panama Canal. If you just use Google Maps, you can see that it should be about 3000 nautical miles with no canals on the way. But within Pacific they are separated by the date line which can confuse the algorithm.

Why is the ship named after a historically Syrian seaport (now part of southern Turkey)?
RHOSUS

A titular see in Cilicia Secunda, suffragan to Anazarba. Rhosus or Rhossus was a seaport situated on the Gulf of Issus, now Alexandretta, southwest of Alexandria (Iskenderoun or Alexandretta). It is mentioned by Strabo (XIV, 5; XVI, 2), Ptolemy (V, 14), Pliny (V, xviii, 2), who place it in Syria, and by Stephanus Byzantius; later by Hierocles (Synecd. 705, 7), and George of Cyprus (Descriptio orbis romani, 827), who locate it in Cilicia Secunda.

<> <> <> <> <> <>
Named after a historical Syrian town. One could well wonder if the cargo’s true destination was Syria. But it seems clear that it wasn’t going to the Syrian government.

Craters. This from one of the ammonium nitrate explosions listed in wikipedia.
“On November 29, 1988, at 4:07 AM two trailers containing approximately 50,000 lb (23,000 kg) of the explosive ANFO (ammonium nitrate with fuel oil) exploded at a construction site located near the 87th street exit of Highway 71 in Kansas City, Missouri. The explosives were to be used in the blasting of rock while constructing Highway 71. The result of the explosions were the deaths of six firemen from the Kansas City Fire Department’s Pumper Companies 30 and 41. Both companies were dispatched after 911 calls indicated that a pickup truck located near the trailers had been set on fire. The responding companies were warned that there were explosives on-site; however, they were unaware that the trailers were essentially magazines filled with explosives. At 4:07 AM one of the “magazines” caught fire and a catastrophic explosion occurred, killing all six firemen instantly — only sparing remains were found. A second blast occurred 40 minutes later, although all fire crews had been pulled back at this time. The blasts created two craters, each approximately 100 feet (30 m) wide and 8 feet (2.4 m) deep. The explosions also shattered windows within a 10-mile (16 km) area and could be heard 40 miles (64 km) away. It was later determined that the explosions were acts of arson, set by individuals embroiled in a labor dispute with the construction company contracted to build the highway.[20][21]”
………………
23 tons of ammonium nitrate, mixed with diesel ready for blasting, made a crater 30m across and 2.4 meters deep. Two trailers, two craters. The blasts one meter off the ground or more.
The Beirut explosion was several hundred tons TNT equivalent, resting on essentially, a waterlogged ledge.

Maybe it is the work of ISIS operatives used by Israel to discredit and eliminate Hezbollah and revive ISIS in Lebanon after it has been kicked out of Syria?
Hassan Diab, the PM has been constantly accused of protecting Hezbollah. The ex-PM, Hariri jr, a staunch opponent to Hezbollah and an ally to the USA has recently suggested that he should be replaced. Rumors are that Hezbollah controls Beirut Port.
The verdict of the International Court on the assassination of Harri senior in 2005 was to be announced on the 8th of August and would confirm that members of the Hezbollah were the culprit. Is it a coincidence that this explosion happens now?
In the mind of the criminals, a shock of that magnitude could turn the Lebanese against their government and provoke its fall and a chaos.
The result would be a failed state where ISIS can bloom again and regain Syria.
Let see if Hezbollah would be able to manage the crisis.

I must push back on the “gross incompetence” / “gross negligence” / “capitalist failure” ideas, or the Lebanon Govt failure.
The declassified CIA report makes it very clear that different Ports are under control by different factions. I do not view this as bureaucratic failure but rather intentional opportunity for each faction to utilize critical ports as assets for potential instability and terrorism.
This is Beirut for fucks sake- a few hours from Israel border. Not exactly a location that would be under scrutinized. Those who attribute this to incompetence and stupidity by the Lebanese are completely underestimating the cunning resolve of its southern neighbors intent to destroy/destabilize Lebanon and steal any assets it can.
This is historical reality not “truthers conspiracy”. How many new posts have you seen debunking and agitating since yesterday? This is life and death trench warfare for Zionist existence, not a game.

I have used nitroprill for blowing tree stumps out of the ground in Australia. Those were the days when one could walk into the store and buy as much as you wanted, no questions asked.
Firstly, it needs to be mixed with diesel fuel, I think it is about 20 to one, preferably the day before use and definitely use a wooden stick and wooden bowl. If the mixing is not thorough it may not explode which means digging it up and re setting for another attempt. Mixing with diesel fuel is essential otherwise prilled ammonia nitrate or Nitroprill is useless.
Secondly, it needs a good detonating charge, I always used two sticks of gelignite rather than the half a stick as recommended.
There is an Australian company mining lithium in Mozambique. Why didn’t they buy it directly from Australia?
Orica, formerly ICI Australia, is both a chemical/explosive manufacturer and a mining services company who will come on site and blow it up for their clients.

Read my post at 131 and those earlier to refresh your mind.
To add clarity, I am saying that it likely is a combination of carelessness and incompetence and judicial system failure. I get that view from the information so far presented and my experience of how corruption and incompetence work.
I understand the schisms that fracture Lebanese society, although I have no lived in experience of it there. I have experience of similar issues elsewhere.
My criticism of the failure of the judiciary IF they did issue an impounding order on the Port Authority is valid. My criticism of the judicial bribery cyclotron of the adversarial legal systems is shared by many critics of that legal rigmarole.
There can be no LOGICAL or even Comercial reason for the port authority to retain that product for all that time. Demurrage and cargo storage costs at ports are high – space is extremely valuable. You dont deter potential clients seeking insured storage by offering them a shed next to a hugely volatile product – they usually check for these things.
So IF the court issued orders to hold the goods pending some lawyer wrangling and so on THEN the judge and lawyers should be held accountable and placed under house arrest. ENOUGH of unaccountable people swanning about in robes being oh so clever at the expense of the public.
NO! the public safety and well being are paramount. The legal niceties are secondary and the port authority management niceties are secondary.
Capitalism and elite factional fancy dancing has rat f#ked Lebanon as it has Israel, as it has Saudi Arabia, as it has the USA and its running dogs with their five eyes.

The Beirut explosion was several hundred tons TNT equivalent, resting on essentially, a waterlogged ledge.

Thank you – exactly that. One vast excavation and well within the capability of 400+tons of TNT equivalent.
There is no need for exploding pigeons, incoming ordinance, natty nukes.
There is plenty of room for accidents and human folly then secondly followed by sabotage and all that possibility.
If you start with a system that is hopeless enough to be comfortable with storing that volume of devastation in one tiny shed and not even breaking up the stash to separate it from a single key strategic site etc., then you are likely to end up with a poor outcome.
If you start with a system that wont simply record evidence then rapidly disseminate the volatile goods to farmers to fertilise and make wealth and simultaneously free up storage for more income – then you are likely to have a bad outcome.
If you fall prey to legal mysticism and mumbo jumbo that cares only for revenue and some appeasement of the Judicial gods then you will end up with a bad outcome for the people.
All the more so if your country is squeezed between contending political neighbours. Meanwhile that clown of a Lebanese President seems to think he has no responsibility. Good luck brothers and sisters in Lebanon. Wheel out the guillotines.

I have been in Beirut a number of times since 1970 and while the situation in the city and who controls it has changed over the years, I never saw any evidence of unusual security anywhere near that area. A photographer friend who was there at the time of Israel’s invasion in 1982, told me of a tent maintained near the Corniche in which a friendly Bedouin lived on the street, occasionally sharing coffee with passersby which included my friend. Once the Israelis had moved into Beirut he became again what he actually was, a colonel in Israeli intelligence.
One can be sure that Israeli agents know the contents of every warehouse in Beirut and particularly those in the port areas. Given the recent series of attacks on Iran, attributed to but not claimed by Israel, and now this devastating blow to Beirut and to the country, as a whole, it is not a stretch but logical to see Israel’s hand all over it.
Unable to defeat Hezbollah on the ground where their record is 0-2, the Israelis are apparently sending a message both to Iran and to Hezbollah, that no place is safe from them in either country.

It was an accident brought about by mountains of incompetence on the part of the ship owner, the judge, the person in charge of storing the stuff, the welders, and literally everyone else involved. No surprise there – this level of stupidity and incompetence can be seen everywhere, both in Lebanon and in the US.
This is what humans do – fuck up.

You see, mate, when I visited Lebanon, electricity did not went down any time during the whole week I stayed there, in spite of counting with the damned destiny of being a nest of spies and saboteurs of every ilk ( as it was the GDR, btw, a flourishing country till the last moment it was overthrown and taken over and dismantled by the Empire and its minions…), they manage quite well to keep this, still, pearl of the Mediterranean, clean, cared and hospitable, making you feel comfortable and almost at home… They offer a good price/quality hotelery and restauration. Lebanese people, although sober, seemed to me warm, helpful, and very honest.
You had to know cozy center Lebanon, as well as Byblos, Sidon, Tyre, whose old cities are a charm…The mountain region is also very beautiful and cared…Got with the wish to return to explore it better..In fact, this year I was thinking of travelling there to make a trekking I was offered while visiting to help a bit…Tripoli is also very, very interesting…
It seemed to me they managed quite well to keep an organized society in the middle of all the intrigues they suffer since the very inception of this suffered country. Not in vain this is the cradle of civilization, the people was writting there when most of us were communicating by shouts..They are victims of the AngloZionist Empire, its Arab satrapies, and its banking system of usure…
The only thing I did not like of Beirut was that most of the best parts of its beaches, except the rocky ones, are private, especial emntion for the big chunk belonging to the AUB ( American University of Beirut ). No beach in the world should be private….that is a crime agsint humanity as one of the places where human beings can feel well in spite of how the day could have passed… I hope that after the destruction they rise like the Fénix and grant themselves a new constituent project where, amongst many other things, beaches are liberated for all the Lebanese ( and visitors…) to enjoy…Rich clients of the AUB can well have a bath in a swimmingpool, as happens in all the rest of university for rich people, and if they want to go to the beach, they will have to mix with the populace…
What the Lebanese need is getting rid of the elites appointed by foreign countries and reform their system so that it gets no more rigged…But that could well be applied to all of us, thus, stop commanding the Lebanese, leave them alone and you will see how they manage and flourish…but that could be like asking for pears to the elm, wouldn´t be?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/aug/05/floating-bomb-disclosed-documents-reveal-path

“Badri Daher, the director-general of Lebanese Customs, told broadcaster LBCI on Wednesday morning that in the years that folllowed, his agency had sent six documents to the judiciary warning that the material posed a danger. “We requested that it be re-exported but that did not happen,” he said. “We leave it to the experts and those concerned to determine why.”

Yes I know it’s the Guardian, yes I know it’s partly written by the propagandist Mr Martin Chulov, nonetheless it is a direct quote from a relevant and knowledgeable individual, one directly connected to, and therefore far more knowledgeable concerning, the situation in Beirut than ny of the village-idiots-in-residence-@MOA like Gruff and Schmatz drooling Zio/Nuke idiocy all over the thread

… Trump didn’t say that.
Trump said what he needed to say to support the narrative that the explosion was the result of Hezbollah bomb-making.
… incompetence on the part of the ship owner, the judge, the person in charge of storing the stuff, the welders, and literally everyone else involved.
What welders? What are their names? Who did they work for? What is their professional experience? Who supervised them? What exactly was the work order?
!!

Did anyone see any dancing Shlomo’s with drums of diesel fuel?

No one saw that exactly. But some people are reporting agile and fast moving pigeons carrying EXACTLY 2,700 tons of nitropril!
That is one mighty GM pigeon so I guess I wont be picking one up at my kosher butcher.
Better stick to bower birds that raid my garden.

If most of the population of Beirut is Lebanese Sunni and Lebanese Christian, same responsible for numerous massacres of Shia and the worst massacre of Palestinians, then WHO CAAAARES when they do same to themselves.
The lowest common denominator on the hypocrisy scale are Lebanese/Arab Christians.

I know Lebanon is a mess but I never under estimate the sneakyness of uncle Sam and perfidious albion.

Absolutely agree with you on that.
PLUS the new head of MI6 is a previous ambassador to Turkey who loves all things Erdoghan. He might well have been the godfather and funds collector for the White Helmets at his time in office there. The White Helmet terrorists were in fact managed by an ex MI6 lad before he ‘fell from his window’.
I am not putting anything beyond the reach of foreign agents including Turkey in this narrative as I know they feed off circumstances just like this.
My view is that quite a few eyes would be watching a stash of explosives this big simply to know where it was going or what higher purpose it might serve. That is what ‘intelligence services’ do.
It is important for all to think a long way ahead because the enemies of the people are doing just that every hour of the day and night.

“There can be no LOGICAL or even Comercial reason for the port authority to retain that product for all that time.
So IF the court issued orders to hold the goods pending some lawyer wrangling and so on THEN the judge and lawyers should be held accountable and placed under house arrest.”

If the port/warehouse were a Sunni controlled front it would make perfect sense to leave a massive bomb (AN) just waiting to be “delivered” at your chosen time of opportunity. Strategy Gladio style?
It would also be convenient to have Judges in place that obviously ignored multiple requests by Govt/port officials to deal with the massive pile of explosives yes?
Covert Ops strategy in play, its really not that complicated.
Saudi-Sunni/ISIS/Israeli/CIA trapline- they are allies and have been blowing the shit out of the ME for some time.

Thank you so be sure I am not misread, I fully agree with the eradication of the elites.
People have been doing exactly that millennia. It works and then sometimes they reappear and then – rinse and repeat.
In this case I am mighty critical of the elite failure to protect the people – the failure to consider the risk to people in the supine acceptance model of society and its institutions. I have no doubt the Lebanese people are mighty fine beings. I have known many in my country.
So lets keep a clear head shall we and go after these elites.
