The Australian High Court has ruled that correspondence between the Queen and the Governor-General of Australia, her viceroy in the former British colony, is no longer “personal” and the property of Buckingham Palace. Why does this matter?
Secret letters written in 1975 by the Queen and her man in Canberra, Sir John Kerr, can now be released by the National Archives – if the Australian establishment allows it. On November 11, 1975, Kerr infamously sacked the reformist government of prime minister Gough Whitlam, and delivered Australia into the hands of the United States.

During the Whitlam years, 1972-75, Australia briefly achieved independence and became intolerably progressive. Politically, it was an astonishing period. An American commentator wrote that no country had “reversed its posture in international affairs so totally without going through a domestic revolution”.

Meanwhile, Germany is already at damage reduction mode, and seems to be willing to accept cooperation with China. My guess is that there’s still some kind of “Prussian elite” in the sense that it has at least something that resembles an Eastern agenda (I don’t know if East Germany exterminated them or not, so I’m guessing here). We know, for example, that the car-making capitalist class in Germany is full pro-Eurasian integration, for obvious reasons (China is the main car producer and soon to be one of the main car consumer markets, while Russia is a fertile ground for car-making plants, in a very favorable trade balance against Russian gas). I don’t know – my guess is that the German capitalist class is divided on this issue.

When historians use the term “invasion” when describing the end of the Roman Empire in the West, they don’t really mean it.
For starters, most of these Germanic barbarians came to Roman territory by invitation, and were not warriors. Rome was largely depopulated by the 3rd Century, due to countless civil wars and plagues. It needed peasants to repopulate its territories and restart the Roman agrarian economy (which was the backbone of Ancient economy). Think of them as the Ancient World’s Mexican illegal immigrants: publicly, they are criticized and deemed “invaders”, but, privately, they are needed, and nobody complains when they see one mowing your backyard or serving you at McDonald’s.
By the 3rd Century, most magistri militum in the Roman west were Germanic – Flavius Stilicho, for example, was half-Vandal.
Even after the Roman Empire in the West fell, it didn’t really fell: Odovacer continued with formal diplomatic relations with Zeno, and continued to recognize him as Roman emperor. The difference lied in the fact that the office of Roman Emperor in the West simply wasn’t that attractive anymore: Odovacer didn’t nominate himself emperor for the simple fact it was better for his career to continue being king of the Goths.
What really hurt the Roman Empire in the West, what really made the office of the Roman Emperor in the West not that attractive anymore, was the Vandal conquest of North Africa. The Vandals were a random Germanic tribe of little importance, but they begun raiding Hispania and, seeing no Roman legion was bothering to save the province, continued raiding southwards until they realized they could cross the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar Strait) and continue raiding North Africa.
The conquest of North Africa allowed the Vandals to, first of all, build a kingdom. Then they realized they could build a fleet: this fleet imposed a series of defeats to the Roman ones, and, all of a sudden, Rome was not the sole Mediterranean empire anymore. This dealt a heavy blow to commerce in Rome. Lastly and most importantly, it ended the flow of grains to Italy, and ended the flow of taxes from most profitable profitable provinces.
Britannia was the first province to be completely lost. But the Church survived intact there, and the Jutes, and, after them, the Angles and Saxons, already were Christians by the time they occupied Britannia, so there wasn’t that great cultural shock to the local population. They also didn’t practice genocide, they simply absorbed the local population after decades of de facto abandonment by the Roman State of the province (the death of Magnus Maximus). There wasn’t the concept of race or nationalism in the Ancient World (both are 19th Century inventions), so, to the local peasants of Britannia, it didn’t really matter if their governors were Romans or Germanic.
Besides, we must not overestimate the size and reach of the State in the Ancient World: even by neoliberal standards, the Roman Empire was a very small State, with minimum capacity of intervening at 99% of its subjects. When we say “Roman State”, we’re basically stating the Army and the legal (petition) system. Most Romans – even from the Pax Romana era – would live normally as peasants without never seeing a Roman official that wasn’t the tax collector in their lives.

Protesters can make a real statement if they flood one of Trump’s rallies and shut it down. Protesters should be storming the Capitol Building in Georgia and demanding the resignation of Brian Kemp for illegal voter suppression. The right to vote is as important as police brutality.
Protesters, if they’re organized and it’s truly a movement, should be planning on occupying the city Trump picks for the Republican Convention and shut the bitch down.
None of that is going to happen, hence this is not a movement by any means. It makes for great ratings though. Maybe that was the intent all along. The media is addicted to the spectacle and if there are no organic spectacles, they stoke them out of thin air.

Thanks for your reply! On this thread, I’m not attempting to explore what’s happening now. I’m writing about that at my VK space in a serialized format. However, I’m very pleased with what I discovered, learned and was able to share as many have profited from those efforts. My research method leads me to examine the sources being cited, then to the sources those previous sources cite, and so forth until I’m inundated with books and journals, and so it was with my investigation into the history of policing within the Outlaw US Empire. Little of what I learned will be included in my present writing aside from exposing the greatest theft and fraud to ever occur in the human history, which as I remind people is ongoing at a clip of billions of dollars a day. Hell, just during May, over one Trillion dollars was looted from US taxpayers and funneled by the Federal Reserve to the Money Power on Wall Street. There are a few attuned to what’s actually happening, while IMO the masses now have a sense since they aren’t as gullible as the elite thought. Hudson outlines the activities that can’t really be hidden as they’re reported daily in the financial press and related sections of newspapers:
“There is only one reason for a stock or bond prices to go up. And that’s because of the flow of funds into the stock market. [Something very basic that most people understand.] What had been supporting the stock market for the last 12 years was very largely stock buybacks by companies using their revenue to sort of close down their business, disinvest and buy their own stocks to at least keep the prices up. Well, what’s flowing into the market right now? Obviously, it’s not corporate profits buying their own stocks, and it’s certainly not popular money coming into the market by small investors thinking that stocks are going to earn more. All this money is coming into the market from the 10 trillion dollar bailout via the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve is going out directly and is buying stocks, bonds, junk bonds, mortgages, junk mortgages, all to prop up the value of assets. (And such open buying’s being announced openly, so a fair portion of the public knows.)
“Now, when it’s putting this money into the stock market, it’s buying stocks that are already issued and have long since —the proceeds have been spent on building factories or enterprises or as means of making money. So none of this bailout money, none of this 10 trillion going into the stock market has any effect at all on the real economy of production and consumption. The usual smoke & mirrors don’t work when the public knows business is way down, unemployment way up, and yet the stock market after an initial downturn is threatening to break 30,000. As with the initial dive, logic demands that the rise is impossible unless reality’s being messed with, which of course is exactly what’s happening. This is the fraud made legal by not enforcing the laws by Alan Greenspan and GHW Bush, at the time when the latter was actually running the nation for the demented Reagan in 1987. It was Greenspan who came up with the idea of using debt to break unions and control society. Greenspan’s responsible for more repression of the citizenry than the collective efforts of all the Confederacy’s generals.

I actually agree with Bannon. This coming election will be centered around Chinese-American relations.
I have checked out the past week because all this BLM protest shit is really depressing but have posters here generally come to the light about what these street spectacles really concern?
They have been funded and activated for political gain being steered by its top eschelons. Its rabble-rousers at the bottom are generally allowed to loot and topple historical monuments and those peaceful are encouraged by the same central leaders to demonstrate apolitically.
But make no mistake, the crux of the matter is Trump’s repositioning America as a more, at least on the surface, nationalist, protectionist state, where China is enemy #1.
I can’t say I disagree with this stance, although with the caveat that those crypto-neocons like Bannon are shooed away and it appears that POTUS is inclined to agree as Bannon was indeed axed.
The benefits to such rhetoric elevated to a national level is a better outlook for blue collar Americans, even though Chinese-prop peddlers in here will repeat ad nauseum, “Those jobs aren’t coming back,” eschewing all economic principles arrising from necessity, and a shift towards better relations with Russia, a resurgent Christian/western nation.
These protests, however, are quickly veering out of control to the benefit of POTUS. Racial divisiveness being employed by the left here is backfiring spectacularly. It is all so such a mess that I honestly wonder if the neolibs actually believed this would help defeat Trump. Or, what’s more, perhaps I am reading this wrong and Biden is truly surging on the back of this desperate ploy to villianize Trump.
But to my original point about U.S.-China relations, what we will see if Trump is ousted is an immediate cleaning-house of all Trump-appointed administrators with old-guard neolibs coming back along with Obama’s guiding hand. If Biden isn’t replaced by election, he will be essentially a figure-head and a useless battleground for his own fleeing mind.
Russia will be the boogeyman once again. Big tech will encroach even further and everyone will be happy that the admin will be sure to mention “people of color” at every state dept. briefing from now until the end of the neolib age.

@114 I would humbly suggest there may be other reasons for stocks to go up other than Fed activity and stock buybacks by corporations.
The Nasdaq in particular has been higher because of stocks like Apple, Amazon, eBay, Regeneron etc. which seem immune to Covid. The DOW is slightly different but the buying there has been because funds expect the virus crisis to be resolved and they don’t want to miss the recovery. I’m not saying they are right or wrong but those are the factors moving the market.

Max and Stacy suggested this rather lengthy article, “Covid has exposed America as a failed state.” It’s written from the British POV and gets a number of important points wrong, but it also makes a few good points, this being perhaps the most important:

Shifting the focus from the police, which in most cases have a monopoly on the use of deadly force and freedom from legal accountability which they take advantage of often, especially against poor people (and people of color, who are often poor in the US) is a particularly shallow ploy in part because most people who do so don’t understand the first thing about the (mostly) black communities in which “black on black” crime occurs.
In fact, it’s related to the recent protests but whatever bubble or echo chamber you are getting your information from ignores that it’s almost always occurring in places where black people…..can’t trust the police to redress wrongs done against them.
Look at the first post in this thread – a black liquor store owner subdues a burglar, calls the police, sees them arriving, ejects the magazine from his pistol, un-chambers the round, and puts it down with his hand on it. Apparently he was just too uppity within the first 4 seconds of his interaction with the police, so they punched him right away, breaking his jaw and knocking out several teeth. Now, I suppose you could say “at least they didn’t shoot him!” and I’m sure you would, but that’s just one contemporary example of black people being unable to trust the police.
Coupled with extreme multi-generational poverty due to crummy schools, single parent households (with fathers often in jail for petty, non-violent and drug offenses) no jobs and the forced inability to acquire wealth in the form of property, and to pass that wealth down to future generations, you have a recipe for disaster such as is playing out in St. Louis, Chicago and formerly Detroit.
I recommend that you check out a book called “On The Run” by Alice Hoffman for some perspective. I also recommend “Colony Within a Nation” by Chris Hayes (he writes much more freely and speaks out against the corporate power structure when he’s not on air at his corporate employer – go figure) and “The Divide” by Matt Taibbi.
Combined, those books will give you a picture ‘from the other side’ and you may start to see that these protests against police militarization and violence on blacks (and others) are also protests about marginalized communities like inner city Chicago, where black-on-black crime is high, not being able to trust the police to serve their needs as individuals or a community.

Your opinion is wrong for many factual reasons, but I’m just going to highlight the essential: the USA is deindustrializing – and not reindustrializing – during the Trump era. Those jobs are literally not coming back – this is not imagination.
And unemployment is rising, not falling. Everything you claim Trump is achieving is happening exactly in the opposite direction. It’s not that you’re even trying to debate: you’re simply reversing reality.
Now, you could claim Trump’s policies are being sabotaged by a the deep state. However, you can’t find a stance where Trump attacks Wall Street. On the contrary: he uses Wall Street’s prosperity as a direct gauge for American prosperity. Trump doesn’t seem to be – nor is he acting in the direction – an anti-finance guy.

I find it hilarious that India was getting all excited about an industrial investment windfall resulting from that investment being pulled from China due to America’s bio attack on that country. They thought for sure this would be their big opportunity to bootstrap out of the Dark Ages. They kept their economy open for as long as possible to make themselves as attractive as possible to the planet’s biggest oligarchs, but that investment windfall never came. I rather doubt any of those oligarchs ever even considered India in the first place, but I guess it is obligatory that everyone in the capitalist world has to doll themselves up when it looks like the rich guy might have dumped his favorite squeeze in the hopes of catching his eye (and thus some of his money).
But India got nothing other than the bitter memory of a squandered opportunity to block the Fort Detrick Flu.

It occurred to me shortly after the murder of George Floyd that the reason he was killed was to protect a local-area counterfeiting operation.
You will recall that very shortly after arriving at the scene of the alleged crime, the police tried to float the idea that the shopkeeper had accused Floyd of “forging a check.”
But the shopkeeper had not called in a report about “forging a check,” he had reported an alleged attempt to pass a counterfeit $20 bill.
The cops, having failed in their attempt to shift public attention to a supposed “forged check,” knew that, if the supposed counterfeit bill had in fact been tendered by Mr. Floyd, then Mr. Floyd would no doubt have either known the producers of the bill, or if he had not known them, might very well remember where he had gotten it, and/or from whom he had gotten it.
It seems to me to be more logical than any other theories so far advanced, that the cops killed Mr. Floyd to prevent him from revealing anything that might expose, or help to expose a local area counterfeiting operation, an operation that had so far been enjoying police protection in exchange for payoffs.
Because Derek Chauvin was a police training officer, and the three cops with him that day were new-on-the-job trainees and thus members of a Chauvin-led team, it’s more than conceivable that all four of them would have been involved, together, in any such crime protection enterprise, and if so, that all four of them were in jeopardy of losing their jobs, and of losing their freedom as well.
And that, it seems to me, is why Mr. Floyd had to die.

Went to view your VK.com site, and Yachats OR on google maps. Looks like a totally wonderful place, but what about that huge (~2-3 sq mile?) clearcut just east of town limits? How do townspeople feel about it? Looks like the timbering operations scoured the Salmon Creek drainage pretty hard. Who owns that land? Hope OR has tough remediation measures that will be taking place and it regenerates quickly.
I’ve only toured the Pacific NW a couple of times, and that was back in the 1990’s, but the big clearcuts on steep terrain I saw then really stuck in my memory. I recall seeing cuts that went for miles on Vancouver Island, with signs up saying they were cut in 1948, where by late ’90’s trees growing back were still only ~15 ft tall.

Now that’s an interesting theory. It would be interesting to see if there is any follow up to determine its merits or lack thereof. I will note that if what I read is correct, the reason the store clerk identified the note as counterfeit was that the ink was still dripping! And Floyd was allegedly very much under the influence of some intoxicant that has yet to be made public (I think?). So it doesn’t look like it was the work of a “professional” funny money operation!

There are very few marks or bruises as the towels apply the pressure across a wide surface area, so the give-up is usually deemed to have died of a heart attack just as the first coroner’s report had claimed what happened to Mr Floyd. The slug who held Mr Floyd’s neck down was holding him in place, the pressure applied by the other two is more likely to have caused the fatality.
Whatever, it was a jointly planned & executed murder & all need to go down for it.

I wonder if many amerikans have made the connection between Pompous’ attempt to halt investigation into amerikan war-crimes in Afghanistan and the cover up tactics used at home to prevent police from being punished for their crimes.
The two situations are identical, except while it is usually claimed that the excesses of empire will eventually brought home to the seat of the empire, in this case since amerika has been committing these crimes at home for more than 300 years, it is likely the germination occurred ‘at home’ first.
Of course the unhealthy habit of recruiting police from the ranks of former killers of non-amerikan unwhites, it seems amerika has created an horrific feedback loop of rape, murder and mayhem.
If the dems who appear to have turned BLM into their satrap as a major campaign vehicle are successful in November, it is guaranteed that the one single action most likely to prevent cops from killing citizens will not be implemented.
That is to insist that police forces stop recruiting from among ex-military. They won’t put a stop to the rort where the military write off procurement scams by gifting billion dollars of unnecessary but nevertheless bought & paid for military equipment to police either.

According to who or what you read, George Floyd seems to have packed a lot into his life. In the 1990s / early 2000s he was rapper Big Floyd, associated with the Houston hiphop scene and in particular with DJ Screw and his Screwed Up Click collective. After DJ Screw’s death in 2000 from a drug overdose, members of his collective seem to have taken very different paths in life. Big Floyd seems to have been a porn star at some point in his life and was also involved in two armed robberies, one of which led to a 5-year prison term. After leaving prison, he moved to Minneapolis in 2014 in an effort to reform his life. He also worked as a truck driver and did community work.

There is an Aztec quality about this: the ritual and public torture and killing of a part of the population in order to placate the god of Capitalism.
The major difference being that the leasers of the Aztecs, who demanded bloody and public sacrifices were not elected, and re-elected, regularly to pronounce a collective consent on the gratuitous and cruel shedding of blood.

Thanks for your reply! One of our local companies, Pacific Seafood, imported about 100 workers from Arizona without any screening or quarantine prior to having them begin duties at their facilities within our county and elsewhere within Oregon. Now their facilities at Astoria and Newport are closed with almost 100% of the imported workers having infected their fellow workers. Our county cases went from 15 a week ago to 150 as of this past Monday. To our great misfortune, it appears Pacific Seafood will suffer no fines or other legal consequences for its actions–and its medical expenses will likely be covered by the state, not the company! The primary result is our county won’t be allowed to go to the phase two level established by the state to further reopen our tourist-based economy, which is great from my POV as our county had done an excellent job of being mindful of our responsibility to everyone else–the essence of Collectivism. In stark contrast, those coming here from outside display no such mindfulness which is generating growing antipathy as infections of workers at grocers–who had zero for 3 months–has suddenly increased to five in the space of ten days.

There’s far too much to excerpt, as this is perhaps the most radically-oriented piece of writing I’ve seen from Pepe. He reveals a lot that most of us won’t know about, which for me as an historian is humbling as I ought to know but don’t! How CHAZ evolves deserves close watching. It does have an opportunity to be replicated but only in Blue city’s, but Pepe thinks that unlikely–unless….

Thank you for your reference to the Australian High Court decision regarding correspondence between the governor general and his queen.
It matters a lot.
There are other correspondences between states governors and the respective premiers that are vitally necessary to be wrested into the public domain. Such correspondence should never be enclosed behind fake UK style secret doors. They are the very property of any thriving democracy and its people.
I gather that there will be strenuous efforts to extend that ruling into state affairs in Australia.
